Grrl Power #988 – It’s like herding horny demons
Meet Dexon, who has been languishing in the cameo cue for quite a while. Sometimes the character designs are hard to just slip into the comic and have them make sense. I probably could have stuck him in the background of the Twilight Council stuff, but I like the cameos to have more robust parts. So, instead, he gets stuck wrangling a giant warmongering demon. I imagine the benefits package is pretty good though. I mean, there are probably plenty of demons in Thoth’s army that are in it for the skull cracking, but still, you gotta take care of your people, and you’ll get a better quality of people if you provide good dental. Or… hornal. Whatever demons call horn care.
Tamer: Enhancer 2 – Progress Update:
Editing continues.
Also Far Cry 6, if I’m honest. I know, you’re like “Dave, weren’t you playing AC:Valhalla last we heard?” And yes, that was the case. Look, I have a type. I also bought Middle Earth: Shadows of War since Steam had it on sale along with all the expansion packs for like $11, and they removed the very grubby DLC store that got the game raked over the coals when it came out. So in the last month I’ve installed about 200GB of “climb a thing, look around, kill a guy, steal a horse, upgrade some gear” games. Still, I have to balance game time with comic and writing time, so I’m really only playing a few hours a week.
If you want my review of FC6; “It’s Far Cry 3.” Obviously the graphics are in line with current hardware, and you can get animal sidekicks, but the sidekicks can’t ride in any vehicles you steal, so I’m super bummed about that. If anything, FC6 makes me really wish that Far Cry 7 would take place on an alien world. Like, keep all the same gameplay mechanics, just have it take place on a new colony on some alien planet with weird flora and fauna, and there are aliens living among the humans. Maybe throw in some faction stuff, like human purists vs everyone, space carnivores vs space vegans, etc, and you have to run missions for the “space dwarves” race to earn favor and work your way up a tech tree of cool alien weapons, instead of 9 versions of MP5’s or whatever. Maybe make it slightly Metriodvania so you have to get the low-grav boots to go into the swamp, or the lidar goggles to explore the giant alien termite tunnels. Stuff like that. Just anything other than “Overthrow tiny island despot.” At least I assume there’s a despot in FC6. Fortunately you can skip nearly all of the cutscenes, and I just don’t care. Yeah, he’s bad. Let me shoot stuff and upgrade my pants.
I do hope to have the book’s first editing pass done in… a week? (And then I send it to a few people to get different eyes on it so it’s not riddled with typos. At least that gives me time to work on a cover.)
October’s vote incentive is up! This is a redraw of a comic I did in 2011 I think, but never published. I had originally pictured the comic going through an establishment phase, and then taking occasional breaks from the storylines for little one-off moments like these. Which I guess I could still do. I just got wrapped up in the story telling and forgot.
So Dabbler and Sydney are up late one evening on night watch but Dabbler has just discovered Cinemax…

The slide show, one aspect so often forgotten about in warfare is the PR campaign.
in my own series an “alien” species called the Ju-el make it a major part of any invasion…without going into too much detail they are humans from a far future timeline who have a manifest destiny approach to other Earths and human worlds and believe all humans should be part of their empire to be uplifted and protected by them.
Part of their invasions is a years to decades long study of a potential target planet, which leads to notes on what changes to the society would be welcomed without conflicting with their own laws or causing internal conflicts among the massesd (basically they end up with some standards, cure for all disease, free healthcare, free housing, free limitless energy, advanced prosthetics, molecular replicator tech at an industrial level, technologies for indefinite lifespans if desired, and from then changes to the economic and government sectors that get more specific. There basic thing is the locals can keep their culture, traditions, and laws so long as nothing conflicts with Ju-el law or the *greater whole* approach.
to help with this PR campaign they transmit such plans and a “we come to bring peace and uplift your world” message to every radio, television, data network, ect…* while also stating they have “acquired” your world (its not even a declaration of invasion, they state it as a matter of fact, and treat any resistance from that point on for their legal system as unruly citizens of the empire rather than as enemy forces…because again ALL humans are considered part of their empire once they declare it. To quell this resistance they will utilize the least lethal methods they can (again a good PR move), such as phase shift inhibitor particles (change the temperature at which a target material can change phase…normally a construction tech, when used against combustion tech it can stop entire military forces, transportation, and industry if need be), as well as sleep inducing energy waves, ect…. and after subduing such forces make them stand trial and keep up the PR of *you are citizens now*.
The worst form of oppression. Nasty. (Which means I LIKE it!)
What’s the downside?
for the average citizen it’s all upsides, although many would be convinced otherwise for at least a generation or three. Because this is the type of change where those most impacted are those who were the most comfortable being in power; the super wealthy who benefited from exploiting labor, politicians, and those heavily invested in the military. Basically these three groups would see dramatic changes to their lives and their “power” as the system is radically altered around them with long term sustainability and further down the road inclusions in the Empire as citizens after generational changes have been implemented.
the real problems come when those in these group try to rally those in the would only be benefited group their lies and desperate attempts to maintain their power. But again, the PR campaign goes for non lethal and labor reassignment after giving aptitude tests of one’s abilities.
No offense (or maybe much offense), but who the fuck are the Ju-el to decide that?
There had better be a resistance who also uses time-travel to oppose these self-mandated pricks
Well, the Ju-el are an imperialist society with vast resources and a manifest destiny ideology. That totally unfounded as they are “of human descent”; well due to the expansion the majority of the empire are humans of various timelines and realities; even at different levels of technology (an ease them in mindset causes them to when acquiring a less advanced world to use tech that is on one side overpowering to that world but also close enough to it *or at least control systems are downgraded enough* that the local human world can identify it as tech and in usually one generation the locals develop the ability to operate it. (think kids growing up with smart phones picking it up faster than older generations or console games ect…),
anywho, they are not unlike many imperialists who have an ideology that makes them want to expand; and it isn’t totally unfounded they have witnessed many other human worlds collapse for one reason or another; especially during their “Prime Directive” era where they only observed but did not interfere with other Earths outside their own reality *in which they their empire expands over three galaxies*,
however they also bore witness to species from alternate Earths that would visit primitive Earths to capture humans as part of a pet trade (Ki’ran, Ki’an’ta, Vi’ong) and others, Earth’s that were overpowered by aliens like “The Builders” who viewed humans in their reality like pests on a planet they wanted; or entire civilizations of humans being treated like toys, playthings, or being made to worship all manner of ascended class (and fake ascended wannabe) species…and the worst of them all that was the tipping point; the Croon Alliance.
The Croon Alliance being an alliance of non-humanoid species, some even from different realities and a few even ascended class like the Star Lords; who for one reason or another have declared all humanoid life abominations so seek out and destroy any they find; which for their own personal PR campaigns among their own ranks often translates to find a primitive defenseless human world and kill everyone on it. The Ju-el are powerful enough to repel the Croon Alliance, and even mask an Earth (to the extent of even masking its branching timelines and close realities) from the Croon Alliance. An arms race of expansion between these two really.
So in short, imperialists, believe all humans should be part of their empire, and have the excuse of a deadly enemy out there to protect you from…granted infinite multiverse and all so likelihood your particular Earth would ever encounter that enemy was always really low; but hey, an enemy force is always an excuse for an imperialist society to lay claim.
that and the rival empires that also target Earths and the first come, first claim approach. *those pet trade species are in this first come first claim non-aggression pact* so yeah for as much as they say all humans should be uplifted and be one with the empire, if instead some elephant sized octo-moths show up first your world will be taken over and your species treated as pets and wild animals and the Ju-el won’t try to “rescue” you. (that said Earth’s claimed by the pet trade groups aren’t usually occupied and left to run themselves without ever knowing that the occasional missing person was abducted to be a pet or breeding stock, ect…wild life preserve and all that…the alien thought the hiker was a stray cat and “rescued them” by taking them home with them sort of deal. I mean “hey at least they are treating the humans nicely and not exterminating them”…multiverse galactic politics.
in short who are they to decide? The guys with the overpowering space navy who say so and will tell you all about the scary and even more dehumanizing alternatives *even if there was a tiny chance you’d ever meet them(, while offering the average citizen enough good fortune to usually win over the masses (the thing you can do with essentially unlimited resources.
funny addition, I was going to just link to a species document about them but I apparently never posted online properly that I could find. Then thought about a story featuring them, but most stories they are a background thing *we found this super advanced tech*, and the few where they are directly involved are part of series where they are basically cameos and a means to an end, funny though to me as they were like time capsules of my writing styles..one from 2014 is cringy to me now; half the text is just exposition describing them in overly intimate details before the actual story started LoL)
Oh dear God it’s a male demonic aliens Sydney do not leave them alone in the same room!!!
Like that’s stopped them before
And after the presentation we find out that their ‘invasion’ is just setting up a local franchise chain of their equivalent of Starbucks?
Nah. We’re gonna find out that Starbucks was demonic all along.
starbucks is actual of the fey realm
that’s why they always offering so many “deals” and sometimes ambiguous “upgrades”, verbally ask for your name, and entice locals with colorfull beverages.
starbucks have stolen the names of millions and we dont even know it yet
This is now canon.
well if they are fey they ought to reverse their stance on firearms. guns haven’t been made of cold iron for centuries.
And the fey see that as a total win.
Pretty sure Starbucks is owned by mermaids. They even put it on the logo in a blatant display.
Where better to hide than in plain sight? Most people would discount the theory on the basis that they wouldn’t make it so blatantly obvious, and so it must be false.
I always suspected Starbucks was evil. Trying to subvert the meanings of the words small, medium, and large like that with their delicious pastries and flavorful beverages…
being Melusine it could be dragons that resemble mermaids. The logo can also be said to resemble Echidna, so various monsters just calling it a siren or mermaid because popular culture gets those references.
That’s just what the mermaids would want you to think to throw us off track.
I was gonna say like Cupps but with whatever mammary gland equivalent they fetishize in their local culture. Which may also be booba, for all we know.
According to Tom it IS boobs they fetishize, because that’s what got him attracted to Dabbler.

I bet that slideshow would have been glorious and convincing.
Are not slideshows and Power Point presentations a form of mind control? Just say no and move on to defending the world.
Possibly a war crime.
Power points are up there with minefields as things that make war unfun.
You’re saying minesweeper is not a fun game?
War shouldn’t be fun though. If it makes war unfun, then it might hopefully decrease the number and duration of wars, which would be a good thing. Or by war crimes, did you mean “crimes against war”, rather than the usual meaning?
A good example of this would be the classic Star Trek episode; ‘A Taste of Armageddon’; at the end of which, Kirk makes the observation that “war is a very messy business”.
Far Cry 7, or Far Cry 6: Blood Dragon 2, or whatever they wanna do next, being set in space would also free Ubisoft from trying to talk about real-world politics while still claiming that it’s politics-free or neutral or whatever lies that PR wants to put out there to try (and horribly fail) to please both progressives and conservatives.
This is apropos of nothing, but I was just looking at the cast page, and is it maybe time to revise the bios? Maxima’s specifically. It just doesn’t seem quite right to describe her as a “militant, rabid feminist”. I never really liked that take on her character, and I don’t think she’s ever come off as particularly unreasonable in that respect. Makes it seem like the author considers any feminism to be some kind of outrageous mania, and I doubt that’s the case.
Problem is, some people are like that
Denying that there are any like that is just as bad as claiming they all are like that (not saying you, Joe England, are saying that, just pointing out deniers can be just as negative as accusers)
Yeah, I’m just saying Maxima’s not like that. Although, in my experience, most feminists aren’t like that either. In fact, I would say the stereotype of the “militant, rabid feminist” is frankly kind of outdated.
There are always outliers, of course, and I’m sure you could point to examples. But over the past half century the basic ideals of feminism have gone from being a revolutionary movement to being increasingly normalized as society integrates the notion of gender equality to a greater degree over time. To be honest, I don’t know if I’ve ever actually seen any demonstration of militant feminism outside of very, very old movies or TV shows, and usually only in a humorous context.
In any case, I don’t think Maxima’s actually displayed much irrational behavior along those lines. She doesn’t like men she doesn’t know flirting with her, and she gets exasperated sometimes (which is frankly more than understandable when some of her teammates behave like something out of a Benny Hill sketch), and once in a while she’ll take things a little more personally than she needs to. But I do think it’s uncalled for to label her as “militant” or “rabid”. In my eyes she’s simply an extremely strong, admirable woman with a little bit of a chip on her shoulder thanks to sexist attitudes, which, let’s face it, are still a pretty relevant problem in society. So, if it was up to me, I would revise those descriptors.
We don’t really know what Maxi is really like
Sure, she’s changed a lot from the beginning, but that just seems like she’s more relaxing her stuffiness and up-tightness
As for being rabid, remember when we were introduced to Omar and his comment about burkha’s?
DaveB knows the full details
Max is not a very complicated character. She is the serious character who is surrounded by crazies like Sydney. A character in a comedy like this doesn’t need to be more complicated than that.
I’m curious how you interpret that scene as portraying Max as “rabid”. Or what you think an appropriate response would be.
Probably due to the vein popping out of her forehead or the fact that Omar apparently has a whole collection of similar pictures of Maxima. :)
Whether or not rabid is an accurate word, Maxima does have an easily triggered temper. It can take a little or a lot to make her lose her temper. Just ask Dabbler. :) Some are OBVIOUSLY understandable to lose your temper over, like the being grabbed inappropriately/groped stuff by a perpetually horny succubus. Others … Maxima could probably use some anger management classes. :)
A little = calling her ‘Colonel sexy’ to make her crush her phone, or someone doing a little prank with lipstick on Amorphous’s face. Apparently it happens often since Leon has a collection of replacement phones on standby for Maxima.

https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-70-punked/
Medium = tush squeeze (although to be fair to Dabbler, Maxima was already being violent, grabbing her by the neck and shoving her around when she did that back to Maxima)

The thing is, those are all reactions to things that other people are doing. People who are under her command, and who, let’s be honest, actually do commit sexual assault for shits and giggles. Dabbler knows very well that Max doesn’t invite her affections, but she repeatedly gropes her. In the regular army that behavior shouldn’t even be tolerated.
My idea of a “rabid, militant feminist” (which, again, seems less like a real thing these days and more like a dated stereotype) is someone who goes out of their way to impose their views on others, and who makes that drive a defining active characteristic. Hell, with her powers she could bend people to her will very easily, threaten everyone to defer to women in all situations, and castrate any man who offends her marshal law.
Max doesn’t do that. Not even close. She’ll occasionally make a bit of a speech, maybe, but folks are allowed to have opinions. For the most part, she only lashes out when people push her buttons. And that’s not really unreasonable. When someone slaps a woman ass without her consent, I’d say she’d be justified in slapping back. Similarly, if an officer demeans their CO after they’ve been warned, I’d say she’d be justified in kicking their ass to the curb.
So, while it might be fair to say that Maxima could use some anger management, she’s actually been REMARKABLY lenient considering both her limitless superpowers and her clout as a ranking officer. She deserves more credit than being described as a “militant, rabid feminist”. She’s simply an extremely strong, competent woman who doesn’t suffer fools lightly, but who usually manages to keep her temper (mostly) in check. If she didn’t there would be a string of broken bodies under her command.
I always get the feeling Max equates ‘feminine’ with ‘weak’. She seems to go out of her way to look and act masculine. It’s like she feels a woman is only strong and independent if she imitates men, and that doesn’t seem health to me.
I truly disagree.
What constitutes “feminine” and “masculine” are, to an arguable extent, largely arbitrary concepts, and their importance in society has lessened over time. It’s up to each of us to determine who and what we are. At its core, this is the bedrock principle of feminism.
Max isn’t forcing herself to act “masculine,” she’s simply being the person that she feels like being. She doesn’t behave in a traditionally “feminine” fashion because she has no compunction to be do so. She’s not naturally sweet, or motherly, or inclined to wear soft clothes. She never has been.
Though she does do those things occasionally. She has moments when she’s sweet to her friends, or motherly towards Sydney, or decides to wear dresses. I don’t think she necessarily equates traditional standards of femininity with weakness. Maybe sometimes these things irritate her, but that’s a matter of taste.
More importantly, she’s offended by the notion that those standards should take precedence over a woman’s personal initiative, and that men should have the privilege to decide what a woman should or should not be. Because, at the end of the day, we’re all individuals. Yes, it can be argued that women and men can be generally predisposed to certain qualities attached to their gender. But nothing is set in stone, and none of those traits require to carry a “boy” or “girl” card. If a woman likes to wear pants, she’s not dressing like a man. She’s just dressing. And you could point to the alternative, to men who wear dresses, and ask if it’s the same thing. But even then, yeah, they’re just living their truth. And I say, more power to ’em.
Maxima’s angry sometimes, but she’s not unhealthy. She’s not “imitating a man”, she’s being herself. To behave otherwise would require an act of will. To conform to some “feminine” ideal, to force herself to stop dressing and acting in the way she does in order be more of a girl, THAT would be unhealthy, because that’s not who she is. As it stands, she’s very comfortable being Maxima, and it’s not up to anyone else to say how she should act.
The very concept of ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ as behavioral rules isn’t healthy for anyone naturally predispositioned to behave contrary to them. You’re suggesting that Max is defying her own nature by acting in a ‘masculine’ way, but have you considered instead that acting ‘feminine’ could instead be in defiance of her nature?
Yeah, I really don’t think a single indignant exclamation makes her rabid. What he said was clearly designed to provoke her, and it’s not unreasonable to be incensed at the idea of someone presuming to impose their views on gender on women. Yes, he was kidding, and she should’ve known better than to take the bait, but people are allowed to have hot buttons. We’re only human.
Plus: “Rabid” at least implies irrational or excessive.
Max has a POV and once or twice she’s gotten angry when provoked, but that’s not irrational.
Rabid would be somehow compromising the mission or otherwise acting unprofessionally, which is just not her jam at all.
Probably due to the vein popping out of her forehead or the fact that Omar apparently has a whole collection of similar pictures of Maxima. :)

Oh yeah, she *does* have an anger issue (as the mere existence of the anger photo album and standby replacement phones suggests), but most of the examples were about discipline or military decorum, not feminism. For example, “Colonel Sexy” is disparaging on a gender-neutral basis.
Lets not forget that General Faulk had to remind her not to destroy ANOTHER phone.
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-99-this-is-how-you-tug-on-maximas-cape/
And she has a reputation as ‘destroyer of mosques’ (although to be fair, it was just one mosque and it was an accident…. mostly).
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-113-secret-meetings-in-smoky-wood-paneled-rooms/
And General Faulk also mentioned that ‘Junior’ was just unusual statistically for a woman’s name, not wanting her to go off on a feminist tear.
Since he is ‘familiar with her work.’ :)

It’s not really a single incident. Maxima gets enraged a lot, both for understandable and for overreacting reasons. :)
Given how powerful she is, it’s probably a miracle that she doesnt cause a lot more destruction, which does mean she is usually very patient. At least in public.
Now my headcanon has a whole branch of ArcMentalHealth dedicated to monitoring the emotional wellbeing of supers, and developing appropriate therapies to mitigate the risk of rage, depression, and other things that happen to a lot of people who do not have the power of 10 atom bombs.
Well… they do have Dr. Frost on standby at all times :)
Not so much patient as disciplined, I would say.
As a feminist, from 1968, I agree ,well said!
I think that Dabbler has been a moderating influence on her “militant feminism”
Sometimes moderating, sometimes exacerbating. :)
I think if anyone puts a damper on Maxima being what people would call a ‘militant feminist’ it’s actually Sydney, who Maxima seems to get more amused by than irritated…. most of the time. :)
Also Anvil, who can get away with all sorts of things around Maxima since they’re best friends.
But that doesn’t describe Max, does it?
Get ‘em out of a wad. You are free to continue pretending that women wanting to be treated like human beings instead of self-cleaning playthings is somehow emasculating & corrosive to “western civilization,” or w/e.
Again, never said it did, wasn’t even referring to Maxi
Well, some of the audience has either taken that description very seriously, and ignores her behavior actually displayed in the comic, or considers her displayed behavior to rise to that level. These same people also tend to complain about the male representation or double standards in a comic titled “Grrl Power”, as if the majority of other media didn’t have similar problems, just in the other direction.
As a Colonel, isn’t Max militant by default? Also feminist, yes.
But, I doubt rabid. If anything with rabies tried to bite her it would only break its teeth.
I also hate when boss task me to do asap project and when i done it i see his bare ass and hear he does not need that anymore
Next time, do it ASAPier :P
No! Having the boss’ ASAPier is half of the problem!
I mean we have seen how well governments handle things the last few years.
I say we give the demonic overlord a chance to state his case. I mean could he be much worse..?
I’m sure Dexon would give Arianna the vapors…. all those spreadsheets to update
Yup, my first thought when I saw Dex was “Arianna would love that one.” I bet she could make a good case for some “hands on diplomacy”, we all know she earned it.
Me thinks Dabbler has been “Invaded” enough for now, 5 TIMES at last count?
Thothogoth’s powerpoint presentation must have been AWESOME.
Anyone else think Dexon’s face looks a bit like Saitama with the wig from the Martial Arts tournament?
YES. That was bugging the hell out of me! Thank you!

Powerpoint?! They are demons.
Woah Dave it’s been so long since I donated I wasn’t expecting a cameo still! Been wanting to donate again but I have no bank account or credit cards.
he looks like Reigen from Mob Psycho 100, but like, demon-y.
I really want to see his PowerPoint presentation now.
Actually, I want him to present it to the UN. That would be hilarious.
“The Benefits of Surrendering to your new Overlord.”
Sad thing? There are MANY who WOULD simply because it is easier than doing stuff yourself. Apathy will usually win because humans are lazy a a species.
The Dark Side will always come back into use no matter the danger because is it easier.
love that Dexon guy’s outfit, except i would swap the entire blue palet to a green one (mostly because i got a thing against blues) would almost (not really, i’m too lazy) makes me want to get fit in order to pull out that look
He came through the portal. Got it. A month from now, who’s gonna be the one who yells, “PREGNANT!?”

Such as the attempted take over in The Jennifer Morgue book of the The Laundry Files?
Shouldn’t Dexxon be calling Dabbler “Xuriel” here? I think it is possible that he would know her hero name given that Tom has clearly been keeping an eye on her. But he would know her as Xuriel and would probably reflexively call her that. Unless Tom had ordered everyone to call her Dabbler while on earth to support her super hero career which seems possible and in- character for him.
