Grrl Power #97 – This is the martial arts version of pulling on pigtails
Not an auspicious introduction for Anvil, but she’ll get her moment later.
Here’s the part where I grouse about poorly drawn action on this page. I’m sure quite a few of you aren’t even sure what’s happening between Math upside down on Anvil’s head and her landing on the sofa. You don’t see how he go up there, which is ok actually, that doesn’t really require a shot by shot sequence, but then suddenly she’s landing on the sofa. I have those two tiny panels where she tries to grab him and flubs it, which is the wind up to the actual action piece, but I skipped the panel where he’s spinning her. Sequential art is an art form in and of itself, and cutting what I see in my head down to panels is challenging, and especially so with action. I know how I’d redo it to make it clearer, but I’d have to make it two pages to break down the action better. It wouldn’t be as much of a problem if I could put out 2-3 pages a week.
I cut down to the break room for the Harem/Heatwave confrontation (which bled into the Math/Anvil scene) cause I wanted to have a bit of a break from the ballroom, which is feeling long in the tooth to me like the bank parking lot. I think I’ll focus on that till I’m able to move on to the next scene.
Update: Ooh, look who’s got a cameo in one of my favorite webcomics. (mildly NSFW)
Edit: Fixed the requisite omissions, this time Sydney’s missing orbs.
lol Dang he is a very skillful little man, I imagine he and Halo will have very many conflicts where he makes a fool of her and she makes a fool of him…. that or they get along so well Maxima regrets bringing the two of them together.
He looks like Greed from FMA. Is this auspicious?
Yay, Dave you fixed the cast page overlay transparency problem, kudos!
On another note, Dave, as I have mentioned a few times before, I am a member of the yahoo DC Heroes group, which used to be the DCH mailing list. I am a contributor to our website writeups.org as well, currently home to nearly 5000 detailed profiles of various characters, and complete with DCH stats.
I have for some time now wanted to write a piece on Maxima, including stats, to submit to my group for publication on WORG (shorthand for the site name). If you would be interested you can email me at azraelfl@yahoo.com
Naturally I would give you credit, and include a link to Grrl Power in the article, so that readers could check the comic out if they have never read it. If you would like to see a sample of my work, here you go.

Thank you for your time,
I have her written up as a DC 3rd edition character (3.5) but as a beginning character for our game, not her “my universe’s superman” levels. Anyone’s welcome to take a crack at it though.
So you’re “Mimic” is based on DC’s Changeling and not the actual “Mimic?”
(See https://marvel.com/universe/Mimic_(Calvin_Rankin) )
Actually he is built starting with a character from a one-shot way back, named Gregor Nagy aka “The Son of Superman”. He was the child of a scientist friend of Superman who named big blue the boy’s guardian when he died, Gregor died at the end of the issue. One of the other guys in the group worked up stats for the original version and thought I would be able to use it, after I thought about it for a while I agreed. I “amalgamated” him with Marvel’s Changeling, who was known as Mimic on the 90s X-Men cartoon, and later in the comics. This was an easy descision for me because the Gregor actually used the name Changeling in the DCU before Garfield Logan (Beast Boy, changed his name to Changeling about the time Dick Grayson became Robin).
Honestly my universe uses characters from DC, Marvel, Image, Movies, TV Series, My Imagination, and much more. I just posted my version of the Marvel character “Dog” Logan to the group yesterday.
So to answer your question I used both DC and Marvel’s characters for my Mimic, because I wanted to.
Oopps, I meant that Beast Boy became Changeling about the time GraysonRobin became Nightwing. Also if you already knew all this stuff about DC and Marvel then I apologize if I came off as condescending.
Well Cal Rankin was the mimic Looooooong before the animated series (Way back in X-Men number 19(!))
Maybe my research sources are wrong then but the information I found indicated that Marvel’s Changeling (the guy with the weird purple helmet) who impersonated Professor X was the same person as Mimic, namely Calvin Rankin. Either way that is how I constructed my version. No worries though, at least you asked me some good questions on it.:)
Arrrggghhh, disregard that last comment, I figured out where the confusion was coming from. I included Morph in amalgamation (kinda like how Dr. Strangefate was a combo of Dr. Fate and Dr. Strange but his name was Charles Xavier) and forgot about it. Morph, not Mimic, is the same person as the previously mentioned Marvel Changeling. Sorry dude.
The transparancy problem is still there.
I think the new version of the cast page, when I get around to it, will ditch the pop outs. It will make the page a lot taller, but should make it easier to update and will have fewer technical challenges.
It works fine for me noe, thats why I thought it was fixed.
As Anvil reaches for Math, He watches her motions, then uses that results against her. Her arms crossed in front of her, he pushes with his bare foot on one wrist/arm, which would cause a spinning reaction to her body in the opposite direction. His knee pushing off her other wrist/arm (you can see the bottom of his other boot/shoe facing toward you). He pushes on her with the right momentum, she spin toward the couch, he flys over the half wall.
Yes, I believe it is his shot.
WHACK!
So Cool!
quick tell Sydney, she keeps expecting ninjas
I knew he’s not a ninja, but, unless DaveB has something up his sleeve other then his arm, could be as close as she gets
All Math needed to do was to feel where Anvil was reacting to his sitting on her head-to-head. Then move counter to her and use her to leap to the upper story.
Waaaiiiiit Math is a superpower-level Martial artist, pervert, jerk, has blond hair and this hairstyle….. I don’t know if somebody else asked this already but could he be inspired by a certain manga character? I mean you did say you read “Aiki” right?
It’s been mentioned. I had the idea for Math before I read Aiki, but I’ll admit that manga has had some influence.
Does Math also use weapons?
every martial arts master needs to learn weapons to recieve training in more advanced skills at brown or black level even grapplers
I understand that. But that isn’t my question nor the implication of that question. A very good martial artist can turn their environment into one full of weapons should they need them.
I think there is a form of martial arts that does that very thing.
At least I saw something similar to that in a Swartizinager flick.
If anybody knows what the name of that martial arts is please speak up.
It is called Moo Gi Gong, practiced by DC’s Roy Harper aka Speedy aka Arsenal aka Red Arrow, as well as Marvel’s Bullseye. The form teaches that everything is a weapon, Harper has been seen knocking someone out who is around the corner from him using a pebble and an improbable series of ricochets.
Happens to be my one of my absolute favorite forms.
That’s an actual Art? Around here it’s called “Fighting”. =P
Say, wouldn’t Harem’s mental processes be better defined as a “Mutual Mind” rather than a single mind, as there is some degree of independence with lots of overlapping, since each persona can hold individual conversations and/or perform different tasks simultaneously; however, there is obvious sensory overlap. BTW, I can see the sensory overlap being a definite minus if Harem doesn’t get control of her reactions; for example, one of her persona’s is spotted and attacked by a villian. Upon being hit, and receiving significant pain, all of her other personas in the area reveal themselves when they cry out in pain. This could be particularly nasty should she/they be in a situation where they do not want to teleport (so as not to reveal her/their super nature), or cannot teleport (due to some sort of “anti-bamph” field).
Can you move one arm without moving the other, or move one leg without the other having to move along with it? Unless you are disabled in some way (in which case I don’t mean offense, I’m just trying to use an example), the answer is “of course.” Harem’s ability to use her multiple bodies is much the same thing. They are all simply another part of “her” that she can move and control independently just as you can control your limbs. While the average person probably couldn’t control five complete bodies without extensive training, keep in mind that she also has FIVE TIMES the brainpower of the average person as well. While it probably took her some practice to get as good at it as she has, it is by no means unreasonable.
I described it once as having 5 separate computers that all act independently but are constantly sharing data between each other at the same time. so any or all of the units can instantly act upon data from any other unit.
I Have been thinking. (shoots the first person to say “it”)
We (i.e.the stalkers/lurkers of this web comic), need to do a get-to-gether at a Comic/Si-fy/ Con of some kind. Maybe something a few months out, to give every one a chance to get the funds together to be able to travel.
What do you guys think about something like this?
Sorry, I always work weekends and don’ have the money to go to any con’s outside of my city.
It’s a nice thought, but I live in Sydney (Australia) and there is only so much the family budget will allow.
I’m sure I’ll do some sort of “meet at a restaurant” thing once I start actually attending cons. It’ll be a while before I make it to a con in Sydney unfortunately.
tag you are IT! (activates cloaking field and teleports out)
I guess I need to win the lottery (100 mil after taxes) and then have a party.
@ Dr. Revenge..Your have to decloak some time. he he he he.
here’s the freq his cloak misses in an attachment so you don’t need to wait.
OOhhh. Using that model. :)
***Makes setting changes***
Fire missile 1 and 9.
I need to do something to encourage revenge on me by hot girls with pool cues…
Hmm… I thought it was more of a lunge and a miss thing. Resulting in a ton worth of anvil falling onto the girls on the couch
Hey, in case you didn’t know, Harem showed up as a cameo in Leftover Soup.
https://leftoversoup.com/archive.php?num=255
I was just heading here to mention that.
Shower scene woo
Yeah, Tailsteak let me know about it 6 weeks ago. There’s a guy with a buffer. I’ll point it out in Monday’s post as well. I love Leftover Soup, he really should have more readers.
The pool cue is good, but revenge is best served by a hot girl with a riding crop.
Good point in a way. Since Math is such a perv, would he *like* being beaten up by the girls? :D
Not if it is done correctly.
It’s fascinating how you can lay out exactly what’s wrong with this page (panel 6 is really unclear) and just go with it anyway. No, I’m not trying to be condescending, I think it’s actually really odd how absolutely right you are about the problems and yet they’re still there.
Ah well. If you ever edit this page, you could either expand the events of panel six or just crop it so we just see him jumping away, since Anvil’s been humiliated enough that by this point the audience will be rooting for Harem when she smacks him in the head anyway, without that last fall.
Yeah, the issue wasn’t necessarily that I’m lacking the chops to do decent action, though it’s a skill I’ll need to develop just like anything else, it was more of an issue of writing. I wanted to get certain things on the page, and I kept rearranging panels and dialog, but the bottom line is that I’m trying to keep a regular posting schedule, so at some point, I need to start inking. I realized the only way to really fix this issue was to break the page into two. Honestly I may yet go back and try to correct this by doing just that, but that presumes that I have the time and also can figure out how to insert a comic into the archive in the proper place.
I now have competition between who is my favorite character, Sydney or Mathias.
Ok, so we’ve done some speculating on how Syd might deal with Math using her PPO or tentacle orb but howabout her fighting Math using the fight orb? How do you judo throw someone who’s as comfortable in the air as she is? She can stop mid-throw, change direction and boomerang herself right back at him only to pull up short if he tries to counter. Even more than that, she can control her personal gravity and use every surface in a room as a leverage point (including using the fight orb as a mid-air handhold) to press an attack. Remember the wallrunning fight scenes in the Matrix movies?
all she needs is her after lunch Dragon breath, fight over.
If he’s any decent kind of marital artist at all, he should be able to blind-fight reasonable well.
If they were going to fight, now would be the best time for her, since he is unaware of her abilities.
Step 1: Send the illusion into his line of sight and taunt him into attacking. Step 2: The moment he “makes contact” and is disoriented by the lack of an opponent there, hit him from behind with the PPO.
Typo: “the fight orb” should be “the flight orb”
It works either way ;)
You know, I just noticed something. Did Syd manage to call Joel, she intended to before her stomach went dragonborn on her.
oo noooos we at #4 vote people!!
There’s no way I’m flipping back through that many pages for that many comments…but it’s uncanny how many rl actors I can putt to your characters. I imagine James Marsters (Spike of Buffy Fame) as Math, as one example.
…Waaaaaaait a minute. They way Anvil is trying to grab Math is nonsensical! That way would be useful if Math were, say in front of her, or had body parts pretty much on her shoulders; but as it is, she’d MAYBE be able to get her fingertips to him, but would most certainly not get any kind of grip.
Sorry about the semi-gripe, just had to say something. Also, sorry if it’s been brought up before. :v
Whoops, meant ‘THE way’, not ‘THEY way’
Hey guys, are u on cardsapp? thanks
okay WHY does dabler is “on the landing area” seems… odd to me..
I see what you mean with the confusing action for panel 6. :/ Maybe if you added the word “spin!” (or “twirl!”) above Goth Harem’s head?
Then again, then it might be unclean whether Math is spinning or Anvil is. On the other hand, she’s the one that’s falling. *head scritch*
For some reason, I can’t help but hear Mathias speaking in an half-whispered British accent when I read this.
Well, Australian.
