Grrl Power #966 – Special training
Skipping over bedroom shenanigans. There could be some cute and awkward pre-game moments to be had there, but I’ll leave that stuff up to you guys to fill in. As well as jokes about other things being filled in.
Using a prisoner as a punching bag under normal circumstances is obviously a horrific idea. In a world with super powers… there can be legitimate reasons for it. Weird, rare reasons. Like someone needing the occasional injection of Vitamin V. (V, in this case, does not stand for Velocity, 5, Vanadium, or alien lizard people)
Yes, literally the only reason Kevin started off with a boxer’s robe and hand wraps was for the barely-a-reveal in the final panel. Also he wanted to jog out into the middle of the quarry like Rocky.
I’m going back to the black ink lines for a bit. I don’t like them as much, but it does save me at least an hour of work. On top of that I’m going to try and simplify the coloring just a bit, because it has been taking me an average of 5 and a half to 6 days to get two pages done each week, which doesn’t leave a lot of time for nudie pinups or writing. (He said after posting a double sized page.) If I can get comic time down to 5 days, that will give me a little more breathing room and should speed up work on side projects like novels. Speaking of which…
Tamer: Enhancer 2 – Progress Update:
Almost finished the second to last chapter. Like there’s literally a dozen paragraphs left, but instead of doing that tonight I have to post some superheroine comic I’ve been working on. I am going to have to back up and do a little editing, because a new character’s behavior fluctuates too much from one moment to the next. I want them to develop one way, but my default writing flow is pulling them in another.
July’s vote incentive is up!
You guys don’t know who this is yet. (Her name is Xerxa.) I will give you one single guess what she might be from. (And no, it’s not Dabbler’s mother.) It was a piece I had half finished from a little while ago and given my time constraints this month, I threw a little polish and some background on it and here you are. Unfortunately there aren’t nine separate versions because she’s not wearing a ton to begin with. Hopefully you can read about that soon. I hope you like it, personally I think it turned out pretty good.
As always, nude version are up at Patreon.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like.
Hey! Kevin’s back. I’m assuming Archon found a way to keep him under control that doesn’t involve keeping him doped up all the time.
I assume Maxima is the way to keep him under control here.
He admitted himself that she could crush him if he didn’t have a massive super brawl to charge up on first, which he doesn’t have here.
Still feels like a poor risk vs reward calculation here. :)
If he’s anything like Dabbler, he actually needs some violence or he will starve. Maybe it’s some deal he worked out with archon where his “yard time” is a quarry, and his cafeteria is also the quarry.
It also helps that, in spite of everything, Kevin was, and based on the shot in the cell, entirely reasonable (even though the latter involved being drugged). He wanted violence, not death. It was noted that he actually appeared to go out of his way to ensure there wasn’t any lasting harm. He only set out to kill Maxima when she proved to be a legitimate threat.
Hell, if his cell was anywhere near Archon (they haven’t said either way), then he probably got pretty powered from the attack by the aliens, and the fact he didn’t make a break for it is a point in his favor. The truth is, he’s an asset, just a dangerous one.
Lets face it, even though she beat him, I can see he and Sydney having chats about the super hero community like they did during the fight.
Kevin is an odd one, true. Yes, what he did was insane. Yes, he caused a LOT of damage.
That said? We don’t know all of his backstory. He might be a violence absorbing nutcase, but he didn’t swat Sydney down when she appeared beside him. He even said ‘Good kid. I hope she doesn’t get killed tonight’. Those are NOT the words of a raving, self absorbed megalomaniac.
He wanted to show what he could do. He did. Was it right? Was it wrong? I don’t know. He showed an unique power AND a bit of self restraint. Far more than the Hulk has in most of the jade giant’s time in comics.
But the biggest thing in my mind? When Sydney figured out his power and trapped him within her shield with himself to block off his power, to allow her team to regroup, he didn’t hurt her. He could have, easily. HE CHOSE NOT TO. Even though it cost him the fight, he CHOSE not to hurt her. Maybe it was simple arrogance, but I don’t think so.
It is easy to fight. Even to kill if one knows how.
It is not so easy to know WHEN to.
I hope to find out more about Kevin in the future.
Sure, Kevin wanted to show what he could do, but he went about it the wrong way. If he had, for example, approached Archon & told them what he does best, I’m sure they would have worked out some kind of deal (for example, what he’s doing here by providing combat training) in exchange for him to just remaining a law-abiding citizen.
True, we don’t know if he needs violence in the same way most people need food, but whether he needs it or merely wants it, this is a good way to make sure he gets it…And doesn’t have to turn towards massive property destruction. In short, Archon is putting short reigns on a loose cannon in as safe a way as possible for the world at large.
Kevin identified himself as feeding on violence the same way Dabbler feeds on sex (porno sense). so its likely that like Dabbler he needs violence to live. this makes a lot of sense as we have some humanity, and when Kevin started to actually come down from the steakhouse fight that’s when a deal might be made. if you stop and think about who’s up there that’s probably the minimum it would take to stop Kevin if he decides to go rouge again.
Not “insane”… sociopathic.
There’s a difference.
Isn’t sociopathy a form of insanity?
all paths lead to the same place. The garden path, the sociopath…. some just have rougher terrain
Um… if you are sociopathic that is a type of insanity.
Well… except when it comes to the legal definition of insanity, which is different than the clinical definition of insanity. I should probably mention that because for the legal definition of insanity, some people who are clinically insane still don’t fit the legal definition in a LOT of states. :)
The legal definition of insanity means that, at the time of the commission of the crime, the person should not only be suffering from a mental illness, but also have a loss of reasoning power. Specifically, it’s “mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantasty from reality or right from wrong, cannot conduct his or her affairs due to psychosis, or is subject to impulsive behavior beyond their ability to control.” It’s also sometimes defined as when the defendant “was unable to understand what he or she was doing, or unable to understand that what he or she was doing was wrong.”
For a significant amount of sociopaths, they ARE able to recognize what they’re doing is wrong – they just don’t care because of their mental disorder. So many sociopaths would therefore still be unable to use the insanity defense. Same for people who suffer from depression. You might be clinically depressed, which is a mental disorder which technically falls into the category of ‘insanity’ – but it would not meet the LEGAL standard for insanity, because someone suffering from depression still is usually going to be capable of recognizing the difference between right and wrong.
Mostly, it’s sociopaths are insane but can ‘pretend’ to fit in with society, psychopaths are so over the bend they no longer give a shit (that’s even if they can still see the bend)
A good example is Joker and the Bat: Joker is an out and out psychopath, Batsie is a sociopath
As sherlock describes himself, ”a high functioning sociopath.” :)
The definition of sociopathy is a slippery slope. Generally, insanity is seen as a state where the person is not able to appropriately assess the risks inherent in their actions. Whether it be due to intellectual impairment or psychosis the insane person has difficulty sorting right from wrong. A sociopath, for whatever reason, has failed to internalize the mores of their social group. They may be aware of these mores but choose to ignore them. There is often a matter of degree in sociopathy. Most politicians and captains of industry exhibit some sociopathic traits. They are generally self aware enough to fake it in polite company. Less self aware sociopaths have difficulty making it past adolescence without getting into legal issues. There is the proverbial rich kid whose family bails him out time and again but this is usually just putting off the inevitable. There are cases where the sociopathy is so severe as to appear insane but the difference is that the person isn’t suffering from psychosis. I have seen cases where a person tried to play the insanity card but a good competency assessment sorts out the situation pretty quickly. It can, of course, be complicated by a co-occurring mental illness.
Kevin appears to be a unique case. He appears to gain actual sustenance from presence of violence. It also appears to be intoxicating. The farther the grand melee went the less he seemed to care and he seemed more willing to escalate the fight. In terms of the people around him he is functionally a sociopath but is that really accurate if he gains nourishment from his behavior. That puts him more in the category of an obligate predator. Is an alligator a sociopath? This is somewhat academic as you wouldn’t want to find either in your back yard. I could see Kevin as being like a guy who can’t hold his alcohol. A little bit is fun, a little more is way too much. In his favor he has, as others have noted, shown at least suprficial empathy toward Sydney at their first meeting.
It was obviously wrong. Several people could have died, especially when the restaurant got laser-ed, all for his battle lust.
Kevin’s “Aggro” field only extends so far, though it increases as his power goes up, and it has been shown that Max has more than enough power to disintegrate him. All Max would need to do is fly up outside of his range, and then blast him to kingdom come.
Along with his hostage, of course.
I agree, in the real world, (If the real world had supers!) this would be a Bad Idea.
I assume Dabbler is the way to keep him in control here!
Now she knows about his aggro field, she can magically isolate him before he gets out of control.
Considering that small bit of violence made him grow from a foot and a half or two feet taller than her to the point where it looks like she would now be as tall as his belt buckle standing up straight…he has already gained quite a bit of energy from a single target in a very short time.
Honestly, it feels like he grew too fast for such a small amount of violence, considering the level of power he started out with in the first fight after charging on the violence of several supers fighting for quite a while.
Oh he can choose freely what to do with the energy he gets, so maybe he just decided to use it for growth earlier than last time. I think he just wants to have fun this way, because logically speaking it would be better to invest the energy in e.g. strength or speed.
I assume Dabbler (and likely other ArcLight/Dark personnel) did some site prep work before bringing Kevin to the quarry.
Well talk about a call back. Well Sydney did tell him that if he played nice he might get to come out again Flex his power or something like that I did not foresee it happening like this though.
HE’S BAAAACK! LET’S GET READY TO RUUUUUMBLE!
They are in a quarry. I would say more ‘rubble’ than rumble. :)
Rumble the Rubble with some Bam Bam thrown in.
yeah, let’s rock!
it was slated to happen sooner or later
I kinda took it for granite.
Same schist every time. Prefer something more concrete.
Pumices, Pumices.
Gneiss one.
I suppose the best way to keep an addict in check is to occasionally let him have dabs of his drug. Better than going cold turkey, anyway.
Hope to see more of Kevin, he seemed a nice guy when he wasn’t high on violence. Also good to see a marijuana and dorrito diet hasn’t made him soft.
For all we know his power let him metabolize that all in the past 30 seconds converting his soft and physique which has been about half a year to year back to how he was right before he a Maxima through down
Egads its Kevin! Welp she is going have to REALLY put an effort into beating him.
Why would they not only let him out, but feed his powers?
Presumably, he’s like a succubus. Keeping him doped up in isolation was literally starving him to death.
Because they can promise him legal violence with how the aliens are now attacking and attempting to kidnap supers?
That’s literally all he wanted, after all.
Some of these other reasons are well & good but since Archon is a branch of the military, Kevin would always be available as a sparring partner for combat training, frequently enough that he wouldn’t starve to death.
What gun is in Dabbler’s hand? I hope it’s the tickle laser, cause that would be sooooo apropos to use on Kevin and make him depower. Giggles vs Vehemic energy, which wins?
I completely forgot about the tickle laser! Good eye!!!!!
I’m not so sure those are incompatible, I’ve seen some violent tickle fights between young kids.
the tickles may be to power up Dabbler
It could be a version of the restraint gun used in the first fight with Kevin.
Alright, taking bets, we got the possibility this IS indeed Kevin, we got the possibility this is a power mimic of some kind (simulates person of choice by becoming them?), and the possibility that they have some sort of control method other than Max & Sydney + remote location…
I’m very excited to read Enhancer 2! (Only just finished #1 last week, coincidentally enough.)
Who is the one fighting him? What has she got to do with all this?
And, after I posted that, the side bar with characters in today’s strip appears. That still leaves me with the question “why” she’s fighting him.
She’s a Stygian. She lost to Archon. That means she now fights for them so she may improve her skills.
Detla originally hooked up with Lapha and her mercenary mooks on the promise of glorious battle with Terran supers. Achilles isn’t exactly what you’d call a worthy opponent.
fighters do train with punching bags. Achilles is kind of an ultimate punching bag. the opposite of Hiro’s shirt. will his shirt get torn next page?
Impossible to injure is not the same is not the same as supreme fighter. Math and Jabberwokky are way better fighters, in part because they can be hurt and have learned how not to be.
I see Sydney is going to be showing off her new “floaty” power for months to come!
From the glow in the crook of her elbow, looks like she’s actively using the flight orb there, not passively.
Need to use the air maker orb to mimic Aang the avatars air scooter ability.
It must be in her hand, to work!!!
Yes, and her hand is also in her crooked elbow
This is an *insanely bad idea*.
This seems like a horrifically bad idea, given how dangerous Vehemence is, and how almost impossible it was to stop him the first time. Which makes me think they must have some way to drain him of vehemic energy at will now (or Maxima is planning on sending him into outer space almost immediately after he has gotten beyong a minimum strength level…. because otherwise they are sort of idiots. :)
Again, here he is fighting a single opponent in an isolated area. Last time he powered up by devouring all the violence of a 50-man super-brawl. Maxima could turn him to dust if he tried anything now.
She doesn’t even need to dust him – with the power reserve she has, she can just grapple him and hold him down until his vehemic battery runs empty.
Last time he needed a full-on and extended brawl of 20+ superpowered individuals to get strong enough to go against Maxima, and then with the element of surprise (i.e. they didn’t know how his powers worked). Now they are prepared and can stop him waaay before he can reach that point. and being who he is he need some violence in his system to stay healty, why not use these feeding occasions for training.
And of course, he know that and he is not an idiot so he will stop before Maxima had to blast away his arms – or worse.
They had time to prepare this time and know how his power works.
They also had him starved from Violence for months now while keeping him drugged.
But if you want to know a way to keep him under control?
For the older ones among us it’s the ‘Snake Plissken Way’, but for the younger ones we call it the ‘Amanda Waller Way’.
One or more tiny implanted bombs that destroy his brain an/or heart.
Of course there is also the possibility of Maxima throwing him into the sun before he can power up too much.
And the list goes on.
Remembering the original battle, I think Dabbler is there to put a sleep spell on him before he gets powerful enough to counter it. Kevin was already pretty well charged up before he personally joined the battle. Even at the height of his power back then, it was clear that Max was still capable of blowing his head (not-so-clean) off if he didn’t surrender.
Now that Max & Dabbler know about how his powers work, they have plenty of options to stop him before he can get that strong again.
Everything that everyone has said in response to my post is true. My initial reaction was this was a really bad idea that could get out of hand, but yeah – every person who has responded to this with rationales has made sense. :)
Still feels risky, but pretty sure Archon would have some sort of precautions in place. Probably many, many precautions (tickle gun, Kevin being initially drained of vehemic energy in the first place so he’d be easier to take down quickly, knowing to use other non-violent tactics to stop him, Maxima spacing him, etc) , including Maxima (obviously) as a lethal final resort of need be.
Or maybe Dabbler put a spell on him that can drain him if need be.
There is the possibility that he has reconsidered and this is part of his rehabilitation program.
He has shown that he is very rational and he isn’t a killer and the choice is to be doped up forever or play nice.
Considering his abilities he wold be quite the asset for the team, especially as the ace they hold back or against Omega-level threats if more than one deus ex Maxima is needed. He could have an (invading) army (or at least a part of it) fight itself while powering up to deal with the rest.
I wouldnt consider him to be all that rational (if you need violence to survive, that doesnt mean the rational solution is to create an all out super-brawl then try to murder someone – go to an MMA match instead as a spectator), and he IS a potential killer, since he was trying to kill Maxima.
“They also had him starved from Violence for months now while keeping him drugged.” That is an unwarranted assumption.
Or its a danger room sort of thing maybe?
Or, as brodder mentioned, maybe Dabbler has perfected the tickle laser as a way to rob him of vehemic energy/stop him non-violently. I cant believe that I completely didnt think of that as a possibility.
Are they teaching her how to take down an opponent non-violently?
That’s a very clever point, I’ll bet Sydney came up with it.
*Really* not sure that’s a good idea!
ArcSWAT let HIM out? And they let Vehemence out so he could engage in active violence?
ARE THEY OUT OF THEIR EVERLOVIN’ MINDS?!? O_O
My reaction, too.
Mine too, although I know there are several reasons why this might not be as insane as my initial thoughts are on it. :)
Trying to figure out which of these to respond to. Note that in the closeup, we have Max, Syd, and Dabs. With V in this low-powered mode, any one of these can easily take him out in multiple ways.
They are out in the sticks both for the protection of civilians, and to limit V’s access to unregulated amounts of food.
So yeah, at first, this is super sketchy. In detail, though…not so bad.
All those theorizing it is not Vehemence, let me assure you it is. If it was not him wouldn’t there be a ? by his name in the appearing on this page portion? Also… I hope ARCSwat has contingencies in place to prevent him from going off the rails.
I think this is part of a New Member Evaluation. Math has probably already determined that she is a pretty high level fighter; now they are giving her a riddle to solve: How do you defeat an opponent who becomes more powerful the longer you fight them? I’m sort of hoping that she will use Achilles’ keen new grapple on him. Or maybe she can transform that staff into a jump-rope.
Her boobs are not hypnotic unlike dabblers.
I wonder if his poops are now bigger if he needs to go potty
Even if he’s not rehabilitated, this is a smart move.
It’s a good idea to have Kevin around and cooperative just in case you need a Maxima-scale trump card in the future.
Imagine if the Fel or similar invaded again but the big heroes were somehow unavailable. Unleashing vehemence would be destructive yes, but as he likes a good fight, he would be well worth the risk of unleashing during a demonic or alien invasion.
Hmmm, Hiro is here probably as an observer, being I think, as he is second in command of the team. Individually, Max, Sydney and Dazz can handle V with their own power sets now that they know the basis of his power. The three of them combined is super redundant overkill but makes military thinking sense regarding Vehemence. So there’s no danger of him escaping, Max isn’t stupid in that regard. Besides his villainous side, V seems to be an okay honorable type guy and would agree to a parole in this type of outing. Bet real money that he’s gonna be an Arc recruit. Mega asset there.
Parole? No. Supervised Day-Pass? Yeah. Oh, boy is he supervised.
“Plum Island Animal Disease Research Center? Sounds charming…”
I can’t help but wonder if this is some kind of Danger Room, Holodeck type deal. Otherwise things could get messy. Because even tho there’s no super brawl going on, he can charge up a bit from just this fight, as we can see in the last panel/
Yeah! We finally get to see Vehemence again!
Kevin is out of his Happy Hot Box.
Hmm.
Perhaps like Evil Atom, he’s decided he can do more evil if he does it legally and has decided to join the team.
Or, maybe he’s just there to have a little fun.
Aliens are attacking and attempting to kidnap supers. Vehemence wants violence. Seems pretty straightforward to me.
Archon has something Kevin wants, and Kevin has something Archon wants. Kevin is rational and has a sense of morals. He can be reasoned with and he doesn’t kill for the fun of it. Heck if the big fight was any indication he actually doesn’t even like killing. He just needs certain things to survive, and one of them is a fight or two happening in his vicinity. sounds like someone Archon could make use of.
well, i guess that’s make sense… free violence as a job? stonks
I’ll be honest, I kinda prefer the ink lines. Since the switch I’ve noticed my eyes were getting a little strained, but switching back, it’s just easier to focus, and the difference for me is pretty significant.
So I’m not the only one who thinks this, then. To me it looks cleaner, for lack of a better word.
Three votes for the lines @DaveB, keep them it’s much nicer
Four votes. I love the black lines! I would be delighted if this heralded a return to the comic looking like good cartooning (like the original Vehemence fight) rather than the more recent “mediocre 3D rendering” look.
I totally agree. I still enjoy the comic and I understand that Dave wants to improve as an artist, but in my opinion it looked much better in the olden days of Vehemence and For Whom The Death Tolls. Please keep the ink lines.
I think you mean The Periwinkle Butt Sniffer.
+1 for Sydney’s callback reference.
I was honestly wondering when they would bring him out. With aliens and secret organizations coming out of the woodwork to harass and kidnap supers, Vehemence will DEFINITELY get the violence he’s after. And you can’t deny that the guy who took on their whole team alone after some juicing would be a massive benefit.
Awww! Kevin got out to play… I like this guy even if he is more than a little crazed. Nice to see his community service gig is playing to his strengths and preferences.
Thinking of Kevin’s strengths, does he really have much martial prowess or is he all just strength and armor? One would expect that he has picked up a few skills along the way. If for no reason other than to keep his opponent engaged he would want some level of skill.
This may well be an educational session on supers for the Stygian.
Kevin’s greatest skill is not specifically in combat ability, it’s more in the use of magic as an aid to keep causing more violence. he’s much like Dabbler in that he uses magic (he used a counter-spell to stop Dabbler’s Sleep spell during the Big Brawl) but he most differs from her in that he uses a different source of energy to fuel his spells; Dabbler uses Tantric energy, Kevin uses Vehemic energy. Both have skill in the use of spells/rituals to focus magical power to specific effects, they’re just focusing different forms of energy.
Sydney is a bad influence on Max.
After seeing Maxima’s headgear, how would this headgear look on her:

If you can’t access that link, then go here:

When I saw that robe, I briefly thought this was that “For Whom The Death Tolls” fool. Detla’s evaluation didn’t really hint differently.
:P
This might not be the first time we’ve seen it, but I’m dubious that Sydney can “sit” that way without anything to be resting her feet on. She’d probably have to do the yoga-style cross-legged sit to keep her feet up (you know, feet on top of her thighs) which would be a fair bit harder to do while wearing combat boots, I’d imagine).
Sid is sitting that way because she has been using Xuriel’s potion and there’s still some soreness..
Sydney is currently flying
Zigg: why would Sydney’s feet be sore? Wouldn’t it be more painful to be sitting?
the affected area is intimately (I’m not sorry) involved in supporting her weight so it hurts to stand.
That’s my point.
Presumably floating this way does not apply any pressure from below; she’s not sitting on an invisible force-field the size of an end-table; she’s simply ignoring gravity.
So… ABSENT that pressure from below, how is she keeping her feet up like that?
She’d have to “do it like Dhalsim”: https://i.imgur.com/sBVwDJj.jpg
Btw: Is the reason why they had Vehemence train with her instead of Math Archon wanting to keep Math’s skills a secret?
I think this training is on how to cope with a situation where your default solution isn’t effective. She’s obviously a *very* skilled and powerful fighter; if you find yourself in a situation where using those skills make matters worse, what do you do? And with Vehemence, there’s a certain urgency to figuring it out — she doesn’t have a lot of time to work out what to do, the same as if she were in an actual fight. It’s kind of elegant, honestly. (Also, I’ve missed V and am *so happy* to see him in action again.)
As long as he doesn’t stick around for a year and a half…
Question: is Detla super stretch, or is Panel 4 just exaggerating for effect? I’d assume an exaggeration, but you can’t be too sure with this comic.
Also, Yay! Detla’s back! No idea why, but she’s easily one of my favorite characters.
That was supposed to say “super stretchy”
Perhaps Detla regularly uses that potion Sydney partook of in the previous comic…
Was wondering that as well…
It may be an artifact of the camera angle.
Her grounded leg goes up to the top of V’s leg, but remember his knee is flexed so it’s plausible.
Then there’s her hips taking up from the top of his legs to the bottom of his short ribs.
Then there’s her thigh which reaches from the bottom of V’s ribcage to the top of his shoulder; she does have long thighs
Finally, there’s her lower leg delivering the smash.
It may look a little odd if you compare the two thighs but maybe it’s just the angle of her standing leg being a bit foreshortened.
Violence does have the best condiments but it usually comes with a side of ‘cocking it up’, and nobody wants that.
@DaveB, keep the black lines, it looks much better
This could be the “annual” Halo referred to after they beat Sydney the last time.
It could also be a windup to #1000.
Argh, after they beat Kevin. I really shouldn’t write comments (I can’t edit) before breakfast.
Hang on, didn’t he need a LOT more violence than that to grow last time? Like a 30+ person super-riot, a one-on-nine fight with the standing members of Archon, and a huge beatdown by Max?
he started the fight bigger- in panel three there she’s throwing him he’s about twice as tall as her already.
DaveB’s under-the-comic joke: “The best condiments to go with violence?”
Don’t forget the ketchup…Large & numerous splatterings of ketchup.
nah. Sriracha sauce. That’s a lil more violent than ketchup.
;P
You comment has given me an awful, wonderful, terrible idea. The next time I go past the ice cream bar at a buffet I will put Wasabi Peas in the Peanuts.
Not really it seems like a quick way to get arrested.
Random Guy, I’ll see your wasabi peas and peanuts, and raise you a Habanero ice cream!
(This is shaping up to be a hell of a sundae…)
with boneless chicken and a waffle cone
