Grrl Power #936 – What’s blue, horny, and wet all over?
I’ll admit, this page might be a little gratuitous, but I haven’t drawn anyone showering for quite some time. I mean, I haven’t drawn anyone showering in the comic. I’ve done several shower scenes in the vote incentives. Maybe the next wet and wild superheroines I draw will be under a waterfall. Just to mix it up.
I thought wet blue alien babe would be fun. Look, there are wet lady drawing quotients that you non-comic drawing people would know nothing about.
Achilles thinks he’s getting away with something here, but Detla is obviously humoring him. She just showed up and demanded training, and figures she can put up with a little bikini party if that helps balance the scales. Plus, as she said, she looks goooo-ood in that getup.
Honestly, I think the weirdest thing about this page is that as Detla is roughly 5’6″ without those heels on, that would mean that the part of the pool she’s standing is is like 3 feet deep, tops. That seems really shallow since this is a custom built pool for underwater training, and isn’t designed to accomodate kids like a hotel pool would be. We’ve seen the interior of the pool back when they were figuring out what the green orb did, and there are tiers to it. The average depth of that first tier is probably closer to 4 or 5 feet deep. Let’s say 4 and a half. I guess Detla is standing right by the stairs.
The new vote incentive is up! I tried something different this month – instead of doing one well painted picture with a bunch of dress variants, I wanted to tell a bit of a story. Hopefully it makes sense without any dialog or sound effects. So, instead of one picture, you guys are getting nine. Well, you are over at Patreon. The vote incentive is just the first one. And yes, Pixel is bendy enough to do a full on T&A pose.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like!
Anyone else notice Maxi checking out Det’s blue butt in panel three? Check out her eyes if you don’t believe me, and extrapolate where they are looking (hint, not at her head or even her back)
she is standing higher up and looking down at what this supposed to be a prisoner for trying to abduct her is wearing in their water training area.
which Maxima’s mindset could be in for training right now seeing as how she needs to work on her being surprised by suddenly being submerged so she doesn’t pull another move like letting go of Henchwench because she is suddenly underwater.
Not to mention, in how maxima is standing, that could be her walking out of the entrance to the pool area, then realizing that there is a weird colored person in the pool, and doing essentially a double take
Multiple choice!
–
1) There’s not such thing as an unusual skin color here.
–
2) Delta’s wearing a thong.
–
3) You’re not allowed to say ‘colored person’ anymore.
3) Actually this week a court in the UK decided that it is OK, under certain mitigating circumstances. In that case the person making the statement had a closeted upbringing and did not realise that it might cause offence.
One of the rare examples where the standard of offence was not just judged on how it was received, but also whether there was an intent to cause offence. Which, in the case in question, contextually it clearly had not.
Although, clearly it does have the capacity to offend. So good job on spreading the word.
I’m a person of color, as long as you understand that pasty beige is a color.
When you was born you was pink
When you was cold you was blue
When you was hot you was red
When you was sick you was green
When you was scared you was yellow
And you call me colored.
I’m pasty white, but that poem has stuck with me for over 2 decades.
With “Person of Colour” becoming common it’s pretty ridiculous to expect people to not use “Coloured”.
Changing what language is considered acceptable helps only the racists.
Also Max is clearly trying to work out the weird buoyancy thing Det’s got going on to let her float with her whole torso out of the water -steps? *pshaww*
“Changing what language is considered acceptable helps only the racists.”
The polite term for Americans of Sub-Saharan African ancestry has been changing every twenty five years or oftener since the1860s or longer.
Calling someone “Black” was a serious insult within my lifetime, and I’m not that old.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2AitTPI5U0
I never realized that video also had George Wendy and MacCauley Caulkin in it.
Er… George Wendt
I always thought that was john goodman for some reason
Wonder how many people realise that the Cape Region of South Africa was first settled by the Dutch, who then migrated north (pushing the poor Bushmen into the Kalahari)
Point is: no, not everyone of Sub-Saharan Africa is or was ‘black’, so it’s possible that calling everyone with that ancestry ‘black’ was what was considered the ‘serious insult’
Correct. At one point in the South, the word “black” was considered nasty while the n word was not.
Pretending that the words “colored” or “negro” are offensive is silly.
The term “Colored Person” will be officially offensive when the NAACP changes its name. Until then, any such claims are hogwash.
I like to think my skin has colour. otherwise id be the whitest possible white-trash.
UNCF, anyone?
We are humans. We are brown.
All different shades of brown.
Roughly speaking, we come in the same range of shades as wood.
Cool, I’m a naughty pine.
I have no control over someone else being offended by something I do or say if I’m not doing or saying it to intentionally insult someone.
Halo herself used that argument (in other words) while being interviewed by Arianna about Halo wearing the Deadpool shirt. “Down with things that look like other things that are offensive” or something like that…
1) Blue is an unusual skin color, at least on Earth. So far the only other blue skinned person has been Cora, far as I can recall.
2) Detla is not wearing a thong. Look at the last panel.
3) Technically Sel said ‘weird colored person’ – its probably more meaning ‘weirdly colored person.’ As in ‘a person who’s skin color is weird for being on Earth, therefore probably not Terran human.’ Seems appropriate.
Also in general, at least in the US due to the First Amendment (and Canada from Section 1 of the Constitution Act 1982 and Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms), freedom of speech exists even if something’s offensive, but in this case…. it’s not even offensive. Plus I don’t think Sel was trying to be offensive anyway.
Freedom of speech does not have the same kind of defence (it does not get weight above causing offence, in particular) in the courts of England & Wales, as it does in a certain rebellious colony.
Talking about which, I heard that rebel President Biden has declared that ‘Its time to end America’s longest war.’ Does this mean that y’all are going to rejoin the United Kingdom?
We have missed you.
And the taxation. Boy do y’all have a lot of back taxes to make up!
Had pass, no offense to the wonderful people of the British Isles. We have enough taxes of our own.
Wonderful how that worked out, eh?
Yorpie, I adore you…. but I will dump all the tea in America into the ocean before I ever pay a television license fee.
Or pay more taxes.
It was a good mechanism to provide great ad-free public service broadcasting. Without which the world would not have experienced Monty Python, Dr Who or an endless list of great programs that have had world-wide appeal. Having a life free of adverts has been a blessing that was worth every penny. Not to mention having (relatively) unbiassed news coverage.
Fast loosing its relevance mind, as streaming takes over from traditional broadcasting. Hopefully the BBC will adapt. If not the issue will become moot, as there would no longer be a need for the licence fee.
Could you please desalinate and depollute the ocean, and put the fishies et al somewhere safe, before adding the tea. Then bring it up to a nice boil, of course. I’ll have mine with milk and a lot of sugar thanks.
Does the milk and sugar go into the cup before the tea or after?
It depends on whether the tea was made in a pot or not.
If it was made in a pot, then you add the milk to the cup first and add the tea to it which prevents the milk from being scolded.
If you’re making the tea in the mug, then you need to let the tea brew/steep in the boiling for 3-5 minutes before removing the tea leaves/ bag, and then adding milk /sugar to taste.
If you add the milk before the water, then the water temperature drops well below the temp needed to steep the tea, amd you just end up with brown milky water.
Source: I’m from Yorkshire – we know a thing or two about brewing tea :-)
You could always just ask them to dump the tea into the Great Lakes. They’re… relatively unpolluted*** these days. You have to bring your own supertanker of milk, but there’s a redpath sugar factory on the Toronto waterfront still…
*Relative to previous decades.
**Very relative, please ignore algae blooms.
***That’s not salmonella, it’s a squigly microbial friend!
milk would kill the algae, and everything else.
yeah fun fact: milk is considered a bio-hazard spill because of how toxic it is to most animals, plants, and even fungi.
only mammals can really drink it, and even then most adult mammals get sick from it, in fact only 40% of adult humans are lactose tolerant *when you grow up in a culture where most people are lactose tolerant and consume dairy regularly that is a surprising statistic.
There are plenty of rural communities in America that have local TV license fees; nationally there are several public TV programs like PBS which has produced some well-loved shows over the years (e.g. Joy of Painting with Bob Ross) that likely never would’ve made it as paid programming. I’d rather chip in to ad-free, high quality TV and radio programs via a tiny tax (same as we do with libraries) than be bombarded with ads, or bypass them by buying subscription services. I gave up on radio during my commute several years ago in favor of podcasts, after actually timing the ad cycle across my favorite stations at nearly 1/3 with a stopwatch.
As for taxes, I’m also very much for keeping them low, although counter-intuitively one of the best ways to accomplish that may be providing more funding to the IRS to collect taxes already owed. Estimated ROI is as high as 7:1 from simply getting the wealthy to actually file and pay what they owe.
Wonder what the prices in other countrys are for the tv fee…
Here in germany i could subscribe to several streaming services for the price i have to pay for the tv license fee….
And whats even more annoying is that the few things they make that interest me get only a very marginal part of my payment or are locked behind an additional paywall if i want to watch em on demand.
It… never did free you from offending someone, it just ensured that you could offend the precious delicate little butt-flake
Get rid of BoJo the Clown, and we’ll tak. ^_^
*pets*
The most good boy.
Care to lend us a bit of ‘regime change’?
Just to clarify, I meant weirdly colored in the sense that there are no blue skinned team members on the team, so in passing to go relax by the pool, Maxima would have done a double take when she saw a person she didn’t know about.
Dabbler is purple-blue, Cora is blue-grey. Both are illusionists/shapeshifters.
I get your overall point though.
Archon HQ is probably a very confusing place even without people letting alien prisoners wander around.
This is a “weird colored” person, not a weird “colored person”.
Bingo.
That is debatable, from her postion she could just be simply looking at her not necessarily at her ass, but even if that was not the case, well, that is defintely an ass worth checking. I think that even outside the sexual context a well-shaped butt is a thing of beauty. ( I believe it have to do with the Golden Ratio)
see you can easily government agency with an incredibly deep budget this situation out. Make the pool’s depth variable via moving levels or give them a second pool for endurance training as you ever tried to run in waist deep water?
There are actually high end pools that have movable bottoms, that can rise all the way up to flush with the surroundings, so that they double as patio space when you’re not swimming.
For the last part it’s more sensible to have a top slide out and move into place. Often a lucite one so you can see the pool through it.
For a binary choice of ‘full-depth pool’ vs ‘extra patio space’, I would agree. But if you’re committing to the expense of an adjustable-depth pool in the first place, I expect it would be cheaper and easier to have it adjust all the way to zero than it would be to add an entire separate system – especially for a rooftop system like this, where weight and engineering space are not so freely available.
Depends on materials technology. Variable depth of a fixed geometry pool bottom would never hit zero.
Hmmm. Interesting solution tech for flat bottoms, currently available, is a pool “bottom” that is NOT the actual bottom. It’s a pseudo-bottom that floats upward from the actual bottom into whatever position you want it, and pulls down to the desired position by steel cables. So the failure mode would allow it to raise to the surface.
It doesn’t meet the need for a variable-depth-at-the-same-time geometry, though. I’d bet that could be achieved by a multipanel bottom that was segmented, with independent controls, and the middle depths having some kind of shell-like configuration that allowed them to be underneath the end segments and be longer in total when diagonal than when “flat”.
I don’t remember if this question has been asked, and yes my writing a fanfic made me think of and try to go back over the archive looking at evidence for and against but.
How well can Maxima handle higher end magic spells?
Dabbler is a jill of all trades magic and tech user and was stated to have fought Maxima to a stand still. We don’t have data on that fight; was it a first encounter real battle, or a friendlier training exercise where neither was actually trying to hurt the other and gradually esculated as they got a feel for each other’s power levels?
on that it seems Dabbler outclasses all of the magic users on this Earth. Based on two points of information. The first being the fairies which suffered heavy losses against the Mannekillers because of their mana drain ability. We assume Earth bound fae like tricksters and mana shots and illusion casting and basic stuff like that as the second data point here is the vault. The vault was designed to defend against humans and supernaturals, which we can assume includes the fairies. So that skull golem’s debilitation aura can be assumed would have worked on any fairy from this Earth as well. Maxima is too strong that even this nerfing wasn’t enough, Sydney had the Nth tech force bubble, but Dabbler countered with other magic, the anti-debuff item on her ear.
We know Dabbler is an adventurer not just in outerspace but across dimensions.
So are there perhaps fantasy style Isekai dimensions where she can go through dungeons, learn much stronger spells like evidenced when she went solo during the search for Sciona *implying if she had run into Mannekillers her magic was sufficient to overcome their mana drain provided she didn’t have to worry about collateral damage, secondary effects like fire, wind, and rock rather than the direct mana link the fairies might be using with enchantments maybe.
demon worlds with their magic can explain it, but I am thinking of the concept of the really strong overlords of magic types, worlds that practice and study magic to the extent of anime like Slayers and Fairy Tale, or operate on weird rules like Overlord, That Time I got reincarnated as a slime, or So I’m a Spider so what; among others. Places you can encounter individuals like the dark lord of magic, the dragon king of the enchanted valley, the empress of the sun who rules on high in the enchanted floating castle, ect..
or just against characters like Dr. Strange or Dr. Fate.
how well Maxima would defend against magic like that. It seems she can’t defend against psionic attacks if I am reading it right, maybe needs to unlock a new stat for her stat wheel *willpower* heh.
I mean sure fireball, thunder cannon, plasma beam, stones of piercing, and stuff like that I can see Maxima shrugging off but what about exotic spells like the chains of Cytorak, demon’s blood, Migido *Phatansy Star*, or the Dragon Slave *Slayers*
Maxima is probably not well defended against either magic or psionic attacks – EXCEPT that her speed would often allow her to react and either flee or take out the threat before it got her.
Maxima has also mentioned that she has trained against dabbler, and lost mock fights because of magic. Also maxima mentioned to sydney about receiving training specifically against mental attacks.
In short, magic & mental effects can work on maxima, just like anyone else, but they would need to be relatively high level or specifically made to target maxima’s boosted physical form
Well a standstill because of magic. I got the impression Dabbler stopped her but couldn’t hurt her.
That’s correct. Word of DaveB from page 273“Dabbler forced Max into an armor dump and left neither one of them capable of hurting the other.”
thank you, that’s why I couldn’t find it in the archive crawl I did, it was mentioned in a blurb. This is why I wish important world building like that was on panel.
Hmm, a slow escalation resulting in neither able to hurt the other. Now I wish I had used Rhudra in the fanfic instead of Rhulan; that would have been the likely outcome, both ending up in a position where they can’t actually hurt the other and a draw. Magical assault resulting in a an armor focus move of her stats so Maxima can’t produce the power needed to hurt her, while she gets frustrated nothing she has is breaking through.
Honestly I’d like to see a flash back to Maxima fighting Dabbler.
Also, remember that when they were breaking into the underwater magical artifact vault, and were attacked by the big skull golem with the strength-draining aura, Max admitted that it worked on her, but that it wasn’t a problem because she still had strength to spare.
I did mention that, at the end of the third full paragraph. Which is impressive, given that thing was apparently designed to bring to their knees everything from a tiny pixie to a hundreds of years old vampire lord or other high up supernatural creature. Which means anyone trying to stop her with a debuff, weaken, slow, or other type of spell would have their work cut out for them; not unlike the stasis gun. She has an impressive amount of power to move around to compensate for these sorts of things.
although I have to go with Bookhermit’s assumption that against deadly spells she may need to rely on speed and taking down her opponent quickly, not sure how well the avada cadavra (or necro bolt) instant kill spells do. Harry Potter was lax on the rules on surviving it as they don’t have the physical buffs like some fantasy series where someone can power through instance death spells thanks to an increased magic resistance stat or special defense. So against something like a chaos bullet or Lina’s Ragna blade the best option would likely be (just don’t get hit by it).
Maxima mentioned that she basically has, so to speak, a built-in “tinfoil hat”, as it were.
I imagine that she is immune to anything attempting to bypass her external defenses, e.g. enter her body, affect her mind, affect her body, etc.; I believe that the way that works has been either explained or at least hinted at in comic. (Something involving her personal field I believe.)
When it comes to magic that isn’t trying to bypass her external defenses, i.e., something directly trying to affect her, magic is probably more effective than a lot of superpowers and all conventional weaponry (barring maybe highly highly advanced alien weaponry), which is to say that it reaches the level of “could potentially damage her clothing or maybe if REALLY strong leave a scratch”, rather than being ‘completely and totally ineffective’.
Granted, some magic might be able to, indirectly, inconvenience, maybe even incapacitate temporarily, Maxima. For instance, if Maxima were forced into full-speccing into defense, she’d be less able to do anything. (I believe that this is how Dabbler managed to stalemate Maxima, or something to this effect.)
If you manage to use magic to suddenly send Maxima 300 feet underground as an example, it’s not going to be something that defeats Maxima, but it might momentarily incapacity her for instance. (For similar, see how Hench Wench made her escape via portals and did the underwater trick on Maxima. Momentary disorientation, but no real harm to Maxima from it.)
1) Your assumption that Dabbler outclasses most magic users on Earth is not supported. Dabbler is both a mage and a techno gadgeteer. She can magically pull prepared techno items out of wherever she stores them. That led her to have capabilities that pure magic-first guest characters didn’t. The fact that a mixed group of supers, technos, and adventurers were on the one site was what saved the day. (Just the explosion of one damaged bot would have probably killed everyone there if Max hadn’t sped it out of the meeting place.)
2) Max isn’t magic-based. She has been shown defending against psionic attacks. It just took her a moment to throw it off, iirc.
1: the vault battle against the skull golem. If the item she used to not be affected by its debuff is something other magic user have then the vault defenses should have been designed to counter act it. Seems she at least has access to magic items that most on Earth don’t have access to, at least as far as the ones who designed those defenses could determine. There was also another scene where the teams went after possibly Sciona locations, it had previously been mentioned that the magic first fairies suffered heavy losses against the mannekillers, however Dabbler, who yes could have also been using tech, went solo and stated without having to worry about collateral damage could go out so had an easier time of her fight. I will admit we haven’t really seen much of other magic users and what they can do other than a few special cases who look to have unique items or abilities like the members of the group Krona and Pixel are from. But it does seem implied given the vault defenses that most magic users on this Earth aren’t of the same level as fantasy adventurers like Dabbler seems designed to be…that said after the Henchwench fight I am looking at her claims a little more slanted now and wandering if that fight with MJaxima wasn’t just a demonstration fight to show what she could do to join the team and Maxima was holding back a lot.
2: The one psionic attack we’ve seen her defend against worked because of a crack in the copy-bot’s lens that creating an opening in maxima’s eye where its hypnotic light wasn’t hitting. Which isn’t much and still impressive that’s all it took for her to shrug it off, but had that crack not been there it might have worked. However it is also worth noting that thing was copying powers which means something else out there without a crack in its eye can also produce that same hypnotism and potentially control Maxima.

we cam assume by this dialogue that the vault was designed with what they know in mind, which would be supernaturals and magic users (which implies what Dabbler used to bypass that was something unusual),
heck the fact some of what was in that vault didn’t seem particularly out there as a standard magic item in some fantasy series we can deduce they’ve pulled the old *forbidden research*, *keep it low enough so as not to be noticed by mundane humans* type of world.
This series seems to be a “Hidden Darkness” (AKA: Low and Urban Fantasy* setting being transitioned into a super-hero world setting. which shows the old guard isn’t accustomed to high levels of power or magic strong enough to counter what they have’ at least not without locking it away and forgetting about it. Why back then I also expressed the concern that the Twilight Council would have gone after Sydney to lock her and her orbs away if they had found her before Archon did.
I would guess that Dabbler has a much wider variety to draw from than a magic-user that’s never left their home planet. She’s a min-maxer, and she’s picked up spells and items from across the universe, so she’ll have stuff that’s better than average. Some cultures are probably going to be significantly more proficient at solving certain types of problems than others, so when you can pick the best stuff that multiples cultures have produced, you’ll have an advantage.
which goes with what I am saying, this Earth they are trying to hide from humanity, so nothing too big or too flashy except in private, likely far more common to have enchantments, curses, illusions, hypnosis, or artificers building magic items for specific clients than say someone learning a giga fireball or mega volt destruction spell or whatever. Dabbler visits planets and/or dimensions with more open use of magic, picks up their spells and trinkets that were developed in such a culture, and comes to Earth so her magic and tech can likely outclass the majority of what she encounters on this Earth.
It would make sense to have a somewhat shallow bit of the pool to do training about getting in and out of water, since that can throw people. And you don’t want to stumble while Dr. Blasto is firing her eye beams because you misjudged the resistance difference.
Detla is not wrong. That mate attracting outfit does look exceedingly good on her.
…in fact, her trying that on in the locker room for the first time and admiring how well it looks on her would make for an excellent vote incentive.
Panel 3’s slackening of the neck-strap as she folds her arms is a nice detail.
Oooo, I got this!
Outside in the rain we present … Babe the big blue ox.
Ha. I’d be her Paul Bunyan any day.
I will refrain from making any wood-based jokes.
I enjoy wet-look, mate-attracting Detla. I have a question, however: Am I misunderstanding, or was that beach ball full of water? Wouldn’t that break your neck if it hit your face without popping?
she is splashing because her hand was in the water and she struck up from that position.
ahhh, that makes more sense, though that’s a lot of water for just a hand, more like if her arm was elbow deep before she struck
I wonder if he’s actually stupid enough to forget, or he’s just having fun with them.
We know that he did not, as he specifically states “Actually, aren’t you under arrest”, in panel 3 of the previous page. And in panel 5 there he comes to the conclusion that he is satisfied with her explanation.
He took her to security to get her a badge. Presumably, the process of getting the paperwork for getting her in would have flagged something if it was a total problem.
Bureaucracies do not work that way. The badge issuing department will not check with the arresting department. Not least because a senior (corporal) member of the latter department is there requesting the badge. He would not be likely to be doing that for someone who was under arrest, now would he?
RE: Pool size, you do get pools that can have the floor raised or lowerred, I just asumed they raised the pool for ‘training’
I will NOT be shocked if next Monday’s strip starts out with a shot of Achilles, on his hands and knees, cleaning that (emptied) pool with a mascara brush. Not so much because he did this, but because he didn’t get clearance, first.
Depends on how getting her the visitor badge worked. He’s not an actual idiot, so there would have been a phone call from the security office to validate her story.
So, you’re suggesting Achilles is smarter, or at least more sensible, than Deus?
If he is, then I’m afraid I have to send the ninja hit squad out for Dal because of his heresy.
All praise Deus, amen.
I made no reference to Deus, who in any case demonstrated no flaw in judgment on that page. Deus knew who and what Sciona was, and manipulated her masterfully.
On the same hand, Achilles acts like a flip frat boy at most time, but always in a context that it *works* for the purpose of the moment. I suspect that, if Max gives him a moment to speak, and if he chooses to break character, Achilles will give a completely awesome answer to the question of why Detla is in that outfit.
Achilles has known many fighters. He has seen them win, and seen them die.
Detla asked to learn the techniques by which he beat her. There are two parts to how he beat her. The first was by throwing her off and misdirection. She will ALWAYS be vulnerable to that if she has only her brittle warrior personality to use in combat. She must develop mental flexibility, or, like steel, be broken by her own brittleness.
The second was by certain physical grappling techniques. To accurately teach her those, she must wear that training outfit so he can accurately perceive the motions of all her major and minor muscle groups. Seeing how she handles herself when relaxed, playing volleyball in a bikini will give him a clear idea of exactly how she uses her body, which knowledge is the starting basis for any mentorship.
That’s the story that a smart Achilles would tell. Then he’d end with a joke, but one that went a surprising direction, not back into the idea that Detla is a sex toy.
I “LIKE” Max in the Mrs. Emma Peel Catsuit. I REALLY do.
I think it would be great if HALO said “Mrs.Peel, We’re needed”, I mean if she has seen “The AVENGERS”. The British ones , not the Marvel comics ones.
Pretty sureit’s a wetsuit, because jhfcoab, Max is shiny.
And yes, I’d actually be more surprised if Sydney didn’t now from Mrs.Peel & John Steed.
She’s more likely to know the modern movie. but yeah she’d probably know the line. If sydney were my age (46) however I grew up watching reruns of the original series on A&E on cable
Emma Peel, one of my first true loves.
They would be nice. Need an umbrella too.
Then again, if we have the IMF and UNCLE show up, I may ‘facepalm’.
Dang! Another reminder that I’m old. Our local PBS station OETA had Dr. Who, The Avengers, The Saint and Monty Python during the late 70’s early 80’s. OETA was and to some degree still is a haven for documentaries and shows that wouldn’t quite make it on network television. My current PBS station KERA is piped in from Colorado and is beset by the same political maundering that you can find all over the cableverse. To the point, If Sydney were my kid she would be at least Avengers adjacent.
A little research shows that there was comic book in period with the TV show and then later a “Steed and Mrs. Peel” comic from one of the independent publishers so Sydney would likely have an awareness of the characters. I think Stalwart has the gravitas to pull off John Steed but may lack the sense of humor. Somebody find a bowler hat!
Register one vote for Detla in a vote incentive, very soon please!
I’ll second that. I didn’t think much of her one way or the other during her first appearance, but the more I see her now, the more I like her. I think it’s the fact that she isn’t fooled by the whole “life debt” thing. She may not be an expert on Earth culture, but she’s also not stupid enough to take everything at face value just because she’s not an expert, which I don’t recall being a thing in most of the sci-fi I’ve seen or read. At least that I can recall off the top of my head.
I just like her whole deadpan “This mate attracting outfit looks exceedingly good on me,” and I can’t help but agree. Plus, I think she would look exceedingly good out of it, mask or not. The mask and little or nothing else makes her even more exotic, or maybe erotic is the word. Combination of both, maybe?
Small critique: Panels 3 & 4, the straps on her bikini top look weird, especially the right side. Makes it look like her breasts are floating and the top is no longer supporting them, yet the triangles of cloth are still tight like there is weight on them. It took me a couple of days but I realized that you were intending to do ‘arms crossed under her breasts pushing them up’ look, but breasts are at the same level & position as panel 1 so it doesn’t really work. Not trying to nit pick for the sake of being an ass, I think your art has done nothing but improve and I’ve been reading this since nearly the beginning. But figured all artists would prefer things to be pointed out to continue to improve and honestly, it’s been eye catching for me at least.
You are correct about what it looks like. Her arms are crossed under her breasts and supporting them, taking the pressure off those straps. Notice, when the straps support them, the breasts hang wide. When her arms support them, they are closer together, with cleavage. It’s probably a function of the shoulders rolling forward as well. Get yourself a well endowed woman to stand in those positions, and tell us how it turns out. I’m betting Dave is right on model, because there is no way that level of detail is accidental.
Ok, I tried that. Found a well-endowed woman. I got my face slapped. Hope you’re happy.
Ecstatic. We salute you for your sacrifice in the name of the science of graphic arts.
(Normally I would say “pics or it didn’t happen”, but if you had pics of that, they would have to be fake, so the lack of pics is evidence that it did happen.)
I looked at the same panels, and I agree with you, Dal. That’s normal. Well, for someone with an abnormally perfect physique anyway.
DW: These are the risks we take for pure science.
Delta being near the stairs might explain why the water is shallow where she stands but it doesn’t explain Achilles.
She’s not wrong to call it a “mate attracting outfit”

Copacetic Mature Human Being?
I don’t get it.
Copacetic Mature Human Being?
Crouching Moron, Hidden Baddass. Took me a bit to figure it out, since Google doesn’t return it as a result for CMHB. I only found it because I’ve seen the page before.
Only reason I know what it means is Bharda explained it a couple of pages ago when I asked.
Maxima (In Dark Helmet costume) What? You went over my helmet?
Achilles: Not over, maam. More to the side…It’ll never happen again!
(Remember what comes next?)
Ow.
Yeah. The Schwartz was strong with that one until he ran afoul of a guy who got it twisted.
Go away Max, Achilles is training Detla and this is a crucial step in her development.
For the pool ‘training’ maybe she’s standing on one of those pool bricks or something. Like, added balance. Don’t fall off the brick while bouncing the ball back? Probably Achilles’ idea so he can enjoy seeing all of her ‘training uniform’
If you feel like taking some of those first few panels and sharing their full-sized versions on twitter or something, that’d be neat.
yeah. Neat.
All this talk about skin color…doesn’t anyone realize that Detla has these absolutely adorably emotive ears? I could nibble on those all day. *^.^*
indeed, reminds me of bovine furry girls.
it could be one of those pools with an adjustable floor? I’ve been to a pool where the pool had a false floor that could be raised or lowered depending on what is needed for the activity. This could be the same thing
Regarding the pool level(s): if you go back a couple pages, you can see a good high angle view of the pool, showing it having three different depths (going by the darker blue indicating the bottom)
One flaw in that idea though: with the placement of the pergola seating area, they should be in the deepest part (unless DaveB simply forgot which side was the shallow end)…)
Is anyone else wielded out by the water Detla’s splashing around there? Her hands are barely waist deep in the first panel, and last I check they weren’t the size of a baseball glove so how the hell is she getting all the water moving? And don’t try and tell me speed because her other hand comes out of the water too and there no splash at all! PLUS to get that sort of spray she would have had to take her hand, bring it across her body, and THEN take it out of the water to block, which is the sort of thing I wouldn’t expect from someone who is supposed to be some kind of highly skilled space ninja. That’s what I’d expect from someone who took one karate class at the mall dojo and wants to show off the throw he learned but can only do it when someone stands in place like an idiot while he tries to remember all the steps.
not really, any good freeze frame of a splash will look like that.
I am more confused by the motion she would have had to make to make that splash, the splash is on her right side while she is hitting the ball with her left hand and forearm. So she would need to have twisted down so her left arm was in the water on her right side, and struck up quickly but twisting so she doesn’t back hand the ball but rather blocks it with her arm to fling it back.
not impossible but really awkward.
correction on what I just typed, she could be back handing the ball, if I could see her fist clearer through the spray, still a pretty awkward way to hit something.
You know, I mentioned this a few days ago, but the more i see of Achilles, the more true this seems. I think Achilles “invincibility” also effects his mental state (or, more specifically the chemical balance of his body). Achilles is both oddly competent and mellow, even when he probably should get more emotional / energetic.
Why is the ball full of water?
Max will tell Achilles that he has to go through her to clear Delta, unless he went above her head to Arianna!?
She’s his commanding officer. If she says he has to go through her to get a pass for Polly the cleaning lady then he does until General Foulk decides to have an opinion on the matter.
That said; is this the same person that thought running an obstacle course in bra and panties was appropriate punishment? She’s got no moral high ground.
Just sayin’
Have you ever tried running in lingerie bra? Let alone an obstacle course?
And remember: no males were allowed to watch
Nono, I get it.
Now imagine standing in front of the Secretary of Defense or a senate subcommittee explaining why you thought it was not only good idea but a safe one.
Yo is that hat that maxima is wearing the same one Sydney was wearing when she first went flying? Never occured to me that the hat might not have been hers lol
Fairly Sydney’s hat was a camo
Yeah I actually went back on a spree of the archive lol and your right.
… I feel sorry for Detla. She is bounded by traditions to serve Achilles, until she learns everything from him, but she cannot learn his ultimate trick – Achilles unique inborn invincibility. Which means, she is bounded to him, until one of them die. (Well, if she can warmed up to the others, and a bit loose up, she might feel more comfortable with this life, than what she experienced before, but there is too much factor to state that for sure.
No longer Detla. Now, the Blue Boobie.
