Grrl Power #919 – Objection!
I like how it’s the act of merely stamping a printout of the LLC filing that takes away HenchWench’s powers. Although, using devil/fae rules, Arianna probably had to sign the line under the stamp before it affected her. Normally, someone would have to actually submit the suspended form with whatever office deals with that stuff for it to work, but as mentioned, Arianna has special lawyer powers.
If the stuff Arianna is saying is legal nonsense, I may go back in and edit some stuff based on comments. I googled around a bit and it seems like LLC’s are filed with a state’s Secretary of State office. Actually it seems like they deal with a lot of business stuff, but I’m still kind of guessing.
In audiobook news, Aether’s Revival book 2 is available in the spoken word format. It’s recorded by Andrea Parsneau, and while I usually prefer dual narrators to avoid bad falsetto/truesetto, Andrea is the woman of 350 voices. Maybe 375. I know “1,000” makes for better marketing, but it’s always hyperbolic. Even Mel Blanc was realistically topping out at like, 400.
I’ve never read cultivation novels before this series. Actually, I’m not sure I knew what cultivation was. For those of you who don’t, it was largely pioneered in eastern literature, and is kind of like LitRPG, except instead of leveling up from experience points or whatever, the heroes of cultivation novels do a lot of homework, meditate a lot and pop a plethora of pills. Like, mana pills, I guess. They fight stuff too, but it’s not like a 350 page dungeon crawl either.
It sounds tedious riveting, I know, but Schinhofen’s books have always been a bit more methodically paced/slice of life-y, which, I assume if you’re reading this comic, has at least some appeal to you. Schinhofen also did the Binding Words series, which is one of my favorites and I’ve recommended it here before.

so did someone in the llc have a healing type power? because I remember hench wench taking a rebar hamstringing
She fused with her spirit form so bio image reset seems likely. Basically healing by way of replacing the mass with extra dimensional material via the astral form, the same work around as regeneration and shape shifters only more direct.
Yeah, she grew back that perfect smile too, it seems. I’d think regenerating teeth would be a hell of a thing.
Just drink milk like Monkey D. Luffy and the Soul King.
The way Arianna is acting afterwards, yep I know that feeling. :P
As someone who worked logistics and administration for 9 years: I concur. It’s a wonderful feeling
Combat field medicine. Can confirm.
Not sure if it’s been said yet, but it’s “counsel”, not “council” in panel 2.
“Ka-Golem.” Sometimes I wonder if this is my old buddy Rick writing this comic.
DaveB is a master of onomatopoeia.
I like that Arianna has kicked her shoes off for maximum enjoyment. I had a coworker that wandered the office in their socks, and it converted me to being shoes-off while at my own desk – instantly improved job satisfaction and quality of life.
I’m vaguely amused that the “LLC Filing” appears to actually be the licensing text for some software.
I’m half-tempted to Google for the source of that text.

Considering the powers wore off after Hechwench was told the contact was suspended rather than when it was officially suspended I think her need to hench to get her powers might be a psychological requirement rather than from her powers. Maybe the first time she gained powers was when her firm signed on a super and she lost them when the client left and now just thinks it was because it was an employer rather than a proximity and time limit deal
The contract wasn’t suspended until they got stamped, so basically, her ‘borrowed’ powers wore off at the same time
I think you used the wrong homonym? Council vs. Counsel? Not 100% sure though. Hilarious resolution, regardless!
As mentioned on all three previous pages…
We know that Concretia had been forced to help the LLC… but that doesn’t prove Concretia is a hero.
But Archon has shown a willingness to take on former questionable people in order to control their actions. See Jabberwocky
You either get a gun and a badge, or a 6×4 with a cot and a pot.
Henchwench lookin hella cute in that last panel she is in.
Arianna is “counsel,” not “council.” One advisor, not a legislative group. And she’s “exercising” powers, not “enacting” them. “Enact” means “pass legislation.” Moving on to the merits of the case, suspension wouldn’t really help: the company still exists. You need it dissolved. More importantly, Archon seems to be federal police or military, which makes Arianna the equivalent of a JAG or AUSA, meaning, she can’t do ANYTHING to a civilian company. Since they’re fighting IN Noo Yawk, where the LLC was formed, Arianna’s best bet is to bring an emergency motion ex parte in the nearest NY Supreme Court, on the ground of “look out the window.” Even then, she ain’t gonna get a company dissolved without notice and hearing, but she could get a receiver appointed to take charge of the company with express powers to disavow all executory contracts, and have the receiver cancel HenchWench’s employment contract. Or ask the NY Governor to sign an Executive Order dissolving the company, which would be unconstitutional as hell but it’ll probably get him a bump in the polls so he’d probably do it.
Actually (ACK-SHULLLY – we’re on the internet so it’s important to spell it that way:) ), she could also call the Secretary of State of New York directly, who CAN do what you’re describing -constitutionally-, or she can do what probably fits with what she’s saying she did on her own with a few minor changes, but with a few minor dialog changes – getting a judge by phone to give a preliminary suspension or injunction until it can be reviewed by the Secretary of State of New York. :) It would still require a notice and hearing, but until that notice and hearing is done, the judge’s written order would be in effect, suspending the LLC, but not dissolving it (which she did state was not happening yet – suspend, not dissolve).
Yes about the ‘council’ and ‘enact’ vs ‘exercising’ but DaveB isn’t an attorney and just is trying to use legal jargon – minor errors. And yea, that thing that you said about the governor doing anything like that would definitely not be legal, although you did immediately afterwards say that the governor can’t do that.
ACK-SHULLY none of this entire scene, or any depecting henchwench contributing, is necessary. Any contract entered into for unlawful purposes is void in the United States. This extends even to specific clauses in otherwise lawful contracts that are unlawful; you may not, for example, mandate terms for sex in a pre-nup (Marvin V. Marvin 557 P.2d 106 (1976)).
DISCLAIMER: Not any kind of lawyer or legal professional.
IF a contract entered into for unlawful purposes is automatically null and void, and IF that made any difference to HenchWench’s power, then she would not have any powers in the first place. The contract is immediately void whether that fact is discovered or not. Ergo, a contract entered into by parties for criminal purposes is sufficient to grant her power(s). Otherwise you are getting into “Reality is only real if someone is looking at it” territory.
Which suggests that, void under U.S. law or not, the contract must be voided by a “competent authority”, and it remains in force until that happens.
Lawyered
Hum … how to handle hench wench seems simple… render her legally unable to be employed…
How do you handle that dastardly Power Prisoner… you know, the guy who gains the super powers of all employees, owners, and underlings of any organization who imprisons or enslaves him?
Powers like Hench Wench’s are a dangerous sort. Especially if variants appear in the same world.
Huh, I thought maybe they were going to buy the LLC and Henchwench would no long be working for villains, but instead heroes, and would depower.
That would avoid the many, many in-comic problems with this solution. I feel rather let down.
How could I have not noticed Max’s Power Girl impersonation?
Today Arianna literally stamped out crime!
*facepalm*
Awwww! Arianna gets to be a Superhero too! Yaaaay for Normal People with quick wit! :-D
Arianna is NOT normal even by lawyer standards
Arianna got to take out a supervillian that was giving Maxima trouble by talking to her
yea! I bet that felt awesome
You cannot escape away from the Long Arm of the Law!
I note that if Varia touches Sydney, then hires Hench-wench for a limited-duration contract, the three of them could probably control six orbs at once…
Ya know henchwench powers are similar to a contract demon.
I love Arianna, because in a lesser comic, she would be a one-note PR/legal character that works for the good guys but might as well be evil and nobody likes. But she’s a real character, and while she butts heads with Max a lot she’s often got a good point, and she’s good at her job, and she’s genuinely useful. I love that she got to be involved in this fight in her own way.
Arianna just beat a super villain Max was struggling with… and technically she just phoned this victory in…
“Although, using devil/fae rules, Arianna probably had to sign the line under the stamp before it affected her. Normally, someone would have to actually submit the suspended form with whatever office deals with that stuff for it to work, but as mentioned, Arianna has special lawyer powers.”
It’s obviously magic, so it runs on symbols. The contract is signed, so it has power. Arianna has the authority as a federal officer to suspend the LLC, so it is suspended when she acts to do so.
I assume US federal officers actually have this power. I could be wrong.
Rather like the the spirit you summon can’t move out of the circle, assuming it’s drawn correctly. Most spirits can fly after all, so why would a circle on the ground prevent the spirit from moving out? Because it’s a symbol of imprisonment. And breaking the circle lets the spirit out, regardless of the size of the break.
