Grrl Power #907 – Ménage à deux et demi
Hey it’s another patented Grrl Power action sequence with 11 panels on a page. I await my Eisner nomination.
For those of you wondering about the comic making process, the transcript for this page includes the word “meatwench” to distinguish her from rockwench. That may just be how my mind works.
I know what you’re thinking. Where did Hench Wench’s skirt go in stone form? Since she has to consciously animate herself, as previously established, she did a little wardrobe changeup so she doesn’t have to think about making a stone sheet floop around her legs when she’s fighting. I guess doing that along with the waist-length hair is too much at once.
The vote incentive is updated! It’s Sydney’s debut! Well, Sydney’s been in plenty of vote incentives, but… there are nude versions over at Patreon, at the three dollar level. I figure I should actually make use of the tiers over there. I left the nudes at the $1 for six months just to make sure I could keep up with the work, and it seemed like Sydney’s debut would be a good time to make the nude pinups “official” for lack of a better term.
I honestly can’t tell if it’s well done or if it’s a little creepy. Not because Sydney looks too young… hopefully. It’s a little uncanny-valley-ish, I think. I guess no reason it can’t be both. I will say this much, this started as a paint over because I was having a ton of trouble with her body type, and Sydney wound up a biiiiit too fit. She doesn’t have ab-cleavage like that, especially under her navel. Let’s say this picture happens after she completes basic, with all the running and stuff. I’d say she PhotoShopped them, which would make sense if she’s sending Frix sexts, but I’m not sure she’s that skilled with the program.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like!
Just a comment on the new vote incentive, I think the uncanny is just because her nervous smile is like… a teensy bit too big? Otherwise it’s a really great looking piece, even if I can’t see the nude version XD I do also like the build you gave her, I don’t think she’s so muscly that it’s entirely weird for Sydney.
As for today’s comic, I do wonder just how much Maxima is able to pull her punches. Obviously she has to be careful, but I keep thinking of the scene in Hellsing where Seras just starts flicking Pip in the face and does reasonably serious damage just from that. Obviously he was a normal human and Hench Wench is confirmed as at least sturdier than that, considering the other people Maxima knows are on the team. Still, it must be difficult to gauge just how careful you have to be, and a punch by definition has to have some force behind it or else it’s… basically just a fist bump?
I haven’t seen the NSFW version either, and I don’t think I need to… this is one that’s definitely better with clothing.
Frix disagrees. But he has a weird fetish for skin without fur on it. Why do you think he is so far from his home planet?
Don’t kink shame the smoothies.
Darnn, I have thick fur!!!
I don’t think it would be too much of an issue when striking ordinary humans, but unknown supers might be an issue. Think of holding a plumbing pipe like a chinup bar. Push slowly into my face and it would force me to back up, but it wouldn’t really hurt. Instead, push it as fast as you can straight forward, and you’ll break a nose or teeth. Swing it like a baseball bat and it’s game over for me. Same bat, same muscles, the difference is velocity. Max’s fist at twenty miles an hour would be rather different than at 100 miles an hour. She’d only have to judge how fast she’s going.
It would only be at the upper end of effort, for certain supers, that she would have to um, max out.
Yeah I think my thought was just that, like, in order to punch something you HAVE to add a little speed to it, but you really couldn’t if you were trying to use as little force as possible, which would make it a lot easier to dodge. And you couldn’t really use superspeed to avoid normal human reaction time since that would still potentially add too much force to the blow.
So, like, the only solution I could think of for a superstrong character who didn’t want to obliterate someone’s skull with a punch would be, like, poking? Like, a single finger jab from a superstrong character would likely still hit with the strength of a punch, if not even harder, but at least you could still do that fast enough to not be easily dodged? Maybe?
I mean, as someone who has lived with her powers for a long time Maxima probably has an intuitive knowledge of how much force she can safely use. Kind of like Superman, right? He grew up with his strength and therefore has enough experience to know how to, say, touch someone’s hand or pick up a glass, without breaking it. And Maxima obviously has that too, I just feel like it would be much more difficult to control that with the same precision in a combat situation. Which is why, I guess, you don’t actually see Superman hitting normal people a whole lot in the comics, he usually just like restrains them or lets Batman beat the tar out of them.
If the single-finger jab comes with comparable force to the full-on punch, it could be even more dangerous. Breaking skin and bone (and other materials) is largely a function of pressure rather than total force, so the vastly reduced impact area would be even more deadly.
I was thinking a normal human punch not a super punch, but I do see your point. Still, I imagine the potential injuries would still be significantly less than the instant death I imagine would befall someone being hit by a punch that was barely able to be pulled from a super. And even normal humans can poke pretty damn hard without breaking skin, so I can’t imagine that would be a large risk factor. Broken bones though, that I could definitely see.
Since we’re seeing these shots…Does that mean someone is in for some *pain* once this is discovered? ;)
A girl with Sydney’s build wouldn’t have to work out for too long to have a tummy look like that while laying down. And it looks great, so why overthink it? :D
Maxima has a dial for her super strength, which she can use to adjust the power of her punch.
If she gets her super strength down to zero, she can just swing and won’t hit harder than a regular human of her size, build and training.
I think maximum stats have a minimum where she can’t go down to zero. We’ve seen her adjust her stats several times but looks like it’s a pentagram with a bare minimum of what would be roughly half of her maximum and all stats so even if she takes the time to max out a stat the rest of her stats don’t drop the low what would be half of her maximum
All of the NSFW were super cute if you ignore how many teeth Sydney displays.
Seriously, she’s super cute with her trim bust and hips and short hair.
I subbed purely for Sydney’s pinup debut, but the bonus was the 2x res pages. However, some of the images don’t open to the 2x version but rather to a thumbnail that will not enlarge further, despite the magnifying glass icon. Comments don’t mention that error, so did something break on Patreon in the past? The recent pages work fine.
Okay, it’s not just me. I found a comment (almost a YEAR old) mentioning how the earlier Patreon pages are now super low-res (less than the free versions.) They’re literally thumbnails.
I’ll have to go through the old pages at some point. I don’t see how they could be lower res than the original comic unless there was some problem with Patreon after they were posted.
Sounds like Patreon screwed up then. Comparing page #400:
Non-Patreon version: 643×1959 @ 463KB
Patreon version: 320×975 @ 88.7KB
I don’t know how far it goes, I sorted Oldest to Newest and every single image I saw for many pages were like this.
That sounds to me like the standard Patreon image bug for images that are larger than your full window pane size. Clicking on the image zooms to your full window pane size, but at that point, if you right-click to get the context menu, there should be a ‘view image’ option and a ‘copy image URL’ option that can both be useful here.
I generally use the ‘copy image URL’ and then open a new tab and paste the URL, so that I don’t leave the Patreon page, because using the back button to return will forget any additional content (such as comments) that I’ve loaded.
Whichever option you use, the image you get then should be the right size.
It’s not, I already tried that with multiple images. It opens up at the exact same size. And the preview image on the page itself is obviously scaled up quite a bit, as they’re pixelated. You can barely make out the text on some of the images.
These are posts made back in 2015 (and possibly further, I stopped trying to find one that wasn’t broke at the beginning, and just reversed them back to Newest. All the posts so far going backwards are fine. I’m guessing Patron broke something for the older images over the years.
Yeah they were full res when posted (I downloaded them as I went to read them offline) but patreon has changed it’s images over time a few times.
“I’m being sucked to Hell. Clowns! Clowns everywhere!”
Bwahahahahahahahah!
Hey, get back to guarding my Secret Antarctic Base, BadPenguin!
I think he joined a gang, he was wondering around with two other penguins talking about hijacking a ice breaker back to New York? Not sure what that is all about?
You have penguins guarding your secret Antarctic base. Must be a coastal lair. I have Shoggoths…Shoggoth maids, and dinosaurs guarding my Antarctic Lair…also like three Kaiju including one that is disturbingly attractive.
Oops, sorry boss! But, hey… I’ve stayed away from the Big Red Button a whole month!
Be thankful, I take notes from the evil overlords list. Although, obviously I am not an evil overlord!
*innocent puppy look*
But it does give some very useful tips for secret bases.
My Hell would be a thousand grandmothers trying to learn to operate a computer. Running Linux. Without the X-Window system.
Tell them you skipped breakfast.
They will instantly forget about anything but cooking.
Here is a helpful guide. It’s actually for parents, but works for grandparents as well.

An LLC is itself a legal entity, capable of entering contracts. If an LLC engages HW, HW works for every member of the LLC. But nothing about an LLC requires that each member have the same power. So…they don’t.
I love the star trek shirt in the vote incentive.
Original Series command shirt. Excellent choice. She is *not* to be red-shirted!
Sydney looks nervous and awkward, in the vote incentive. Which is highly appropriate.
*paw print of approval*
I love how Maxima is staring at her fist in shock and horror. She’s never punched someone so hard their soul came out (well yes she has, but never so visibly) and she’s fully prepared for the possibility that she has spirit punching powers. Hench Wench hilariously playing it up to disguise her true motives in great.
On a slightly more alarming note…Concretia is being held against her will, yet the bad guys are able to count her as a full member of their organization to the point where HW’s powers recognize her as an employer. I wonder how many other supers they have or could enslave to make HW more powerful. (Hopefully enough to form a majority and fire her at a really inopportune time.) The way HW says she’ll have to find a super to work for indicates she has recruiting power in the organization, but the way she’s being debuted indicates that she’s either dispensable, or that they overestimated her ability to defeat Max. Definitely not a high man on the totem pole. Dare I say she’s the Sydney of the bad guys?
It took me a moment to recognise what was going on for a moment here. It’s weird that superpowers recognize something so human and made up like a corporation
I also love how Max is willing to let a villain monologue but only if it might reveal useful information. The exact second she realizes Hench is retreading old ground regarding her powers she immediately starts punching.
Max:oh she’s complaining about pain, now she’s mentioning a regen power do I need to go excessive? nope, she doesn’t have one can’t blow her arm off.
The person with the superpowers recognizes something as human and made up as a corporation. It’s anybody’s guess whether Hench Wench would gain or lose a superpower based on corporate changes she was unaware of. She may just have a corporate fixation messing with her much less limited power.
It is a very meta power. You might even say that it is super meta…
I think I’ve said it before, but Hunch Wench’s power honestly sounds more like Fae Magic to me than a normal superpower. I wouldn’t be suprised if she has some fairy blood or something similar that distorted her power.
Yeah when there are contracts involved that affect power it really feels less super human and more magic, especially Fae…and by extension demons thanks to Faust making the idea demons also operate by contracts popular. (but then again most “demons” in folklore are really Fae and similar nature and underworld spirits being called by a new name for the new culture but keeping the same roles).
*sign here and you will have money and power but I get the first born of the new year; or your soul must come be my slave/pet in the Other World*
just call the alluring being a demon and switch out Other World with Hell.
Until shown otherwise, I’m going with the powers are conveyed due to the belief that the employment relationship exists, in the body/mind of the person who’s powers she is using
So, Concretia believes she is part of an LLC that employs Hench Wench. If at any time, Concretia believes otherwise (either that the LLC is not not valid/enforceable/legal, or that Concretia is not actually a charter member or part of the LLC, or that the LLC no longer employs Hench Wench), then the channel conveying her powers to HW will break and that power set will no longer be able to be borrowed.
Arianna’s chance to shine, perhaps? I guess she’s P.R., not legal, right? idunno
Arianna, is a lawyer!
okay, big baddie wants Hench Wench and other supes to do stuff for him. He has the supes form an LLC. He contracts the LLC to do stuff for him. He tells the LLC to hire HW. Now he has the supes and swiss army merc contracted to do his will
So she can animate more then one “body” at a time?
Hench Wench is rocking multiple power so who knows what she’s got going on at the moment.
You know, an intelligent person would probably have come to the conclusion that this is an unwinnable match-up and call it quits after having broken everything on their face without causing a scratch to their opponent…
Max surprise face is kind of scary bur funny also XD
Searching sidney on google i found Grrl Power on badwecomics, is like reading a forum troll.
In my experience, Badwebcomics is really more of a “trash on popular webcomics in the hopes that the keywords will cause traffic to be directed here” than a site that actually critiques bad work. You might find them accidentally saying true things about actually bad comics, but more often than not they’re just throwing negativity around blindly.
Sooo…the Internet.
Pretty much, yeah. Distilled internet 200 proof.
Is there a bad politics site? That would help get to the root of my political interests without trying to filter the effective version out of what the mainstream media supplies.
That’s the rest of the internet.
Can confirm.
“You [guys] have no idea”
I recommend Reddit. Most political recommendations would be subjective, but not r/LeopardsAteMyFace which is for posting examples of people voting directly against their own interests.
ah, blind shit for clickbait.
Thanks, I will go back to ignore it’s existance.
The problem with the vote incentive is the teeth. You show too many of them. A human smile, even a nervous one, doesn’t show that many teeth. Human smiles usually show about four teeth from the midline, even wide ones, because of the way the human gums curve in the mouth. If you really stretch, you can get five. This one shows SEVEN. Your average human with wisdom teeth removed only has seven teeth from the center to the last tooth, so it’s the equivalent of seeing someone smile… but the smile goes all the way back, like a snake unhinging their jaw. Sydney simply has way too many teeth in the incentive.
They’re also really large, which adds to the creepiness, but the main issue is that there are too many.
Yup, my wife is a dental assistant, I noticed that right off. Way, way too many teeth!
Almost looked like a different artist’s take on Halo, to. Not very “Davey”.
“Anime Inspired Art.”
I hate to ever say this, but that mouth is positively Liefeldian.
Don’t see any tiny feet in her mouth, nor pouches (on pouches on pouches on couches on pouches)
I love the genuine confusion all over Maxima on this page. I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen her look like she has no idea what is happening.
“Meat-” is the best prefix in the English language.
I love panel 6 so much because Maxim has this look of utter bafflement, I mean she thinking, “I just punched someone soul out of their body, is this a new power? Should I have it looked at?” The wheels turning in her head about what she saw is quite hilarious.
I hear HW’s “Mind your own business” in John Cleese’s frenchman voice.
I get the impression that Henchwench is one of those supers so used to being overwhelming that
she never actually learned to fight.
I love the look on Maxima’s face looking at her fist, wondering if that is actually a power she has.
Maxima actually is able to punch someone’s soul out of their body, but it isn’t likely she would do so unintentionally. I don’t expect she has even practiced this skill, though Math can point her in the right direction.
I get that Sydney is supposed to look nervous, but the corners of her mouth aren’t upturned and there is no smile at all to her eyes. She looks like she is grimacing to me. Like, just 100% does not want to be where she is or doing what she is doing. :(
about the cote incentive
Does Sydney have an appendectomy scar?
also hawt <3
also yeah tiny bit too big of a smile like the old "DO IT FAGGOT" meme
“Stop hitting yourself!”
3 Step plan to win:
Maxima flies up out of range with the body.
Maxima treathens to break a limb every second WH does not quit the company.
Maxima wins.
But I guess mMax really has too much fun right now?
A good way she could intimidate Hench Wench is to just grab the head of the golem proxy and clinch her fist shattering it.
heck she did something like this to a Blood powered Mannequin with a heated hand through its head.
Power interaction question, does henchies stonebod have brut’s super strength in addition to being made out of stone. Would that make Stonebod Hench stronger than Stonebod Concretia
that is a very good question.
it must come down to how her body, astral body, other metaphysical power source self, sorts the copied powers. Does she slot them (keeping separate), stack them (same powers boost each other), or fuse them (amalgamation and augmentation to make new or improved powers from different powers).
Like if she copied two different people with super strength, in version 1 she could switch between their two different levels or variation of but not use both at the same time.
in version 2 as both super strength are the same power she stacks them to gain a boost of both added together *stacking is the same as fusion but only with the same power*,
version 3 if she gets one person with super strength and another with say pyrokinesis with fussion she can add a power boost to the pyrokinesis.
there are other more complicated versions coming down to augmentation and amalgamation like freaky new powers resulting from copying multiple counter intuitive or weird powers.
I’m guessing the answer would be yes, because a couple of pages ago, DaveB described Hench Wench as a ‘force multiplier’ which implies that she can combine mulitple super powers together, like when she used flight while using superstrength and invulnerability earlier.
Depends on the context in which those words are used. In military-type contexts, a ‘force multiplier’ is simply a technology that makes each unit in the side that has it more effective than the equivalent unit without that benefit. The usual examples include non-combat technologies such as effective communications or reliable logistics. HW is a rather more literal interpretation: she allows her employers’ side to use all of their power twice as much, once themselves and once via her.
I’m left wondering why Hench Wench thinks she is going to be able to fight effectively with her mortal body in reach of pain inflicters such as Maxima. I mean, it’s fairly obvious that Concretia is being kept in line by threat of, and actual application of, pain on her real body. So Hench Wench being able to ignore the pain she’s had and is having inflicted on her flesh body while in her rock body is a huge inconsistency.
I’m also wondering about Hench Wench operating both bodies at once, although with Concretia being restrained I guess it wasn’t obvious that if not restrained she could just walk away and be out of the reach of her controllers. Or get a snack. Or rub one out.
Why do you think (do you?) her hands were restrained like that?
Not only did Maxi punch Henchie spirit out of her body, she also turned her into a Muppet: look at the eyes, nose and lips in panel three, totally Muppet-features :P
this fight seems very calm.
considering they are both so strong.
Can I get a “why are you hitting yourself!?”? :P
sneaks up on Hadrian, preparatory to grabbing his arm…
Shh! You made me laugh loud enough that I could have woken other people in the house!
:-D
Glad to be of service!
Hmm Hench Wench gets stoned, slated for rubble, graveled in the new year. I know she cemented this one.
I’ve never been a big fan of this artwork style. It’s … okay. And I’m sure you like drawing boobs. But if you want realism, take a photo. Way back when, it was more line-art and that was perfect for a genre-savvy tour de farce of comic-book culture. I wouldn’t describe it now in negative terms, but it was greater than it currently is.
I need more Henchwench in my life.
