I’m not saying that Max’s daydream is actually what happened, especially with the anachronistic cop, but it wouldn’t surprise me if something like that happened.
For anyone wondering, Gwen’s eyes are supposed to be hazel, and not be quite so much “the darkness must feed” colored. But it works with her goth/lolita thing so I guess it’s ok. Apparently ArcLight has an incredibly relaxed dress code.
In case you’re not familiar with Adderall, the generic version of it simply reads “Amphetamine.” Meth lite basically.
Regular commenter Marscaleb made a top 10 video of his favorite webcomics, it’s kind of long, coming in a around 45 minutes, but actually quite well produced. I watched the whole thing and plan on checking out his recommendations. You can probably guess why I mention it here.

Wow, when I first read this, I thought “Final Fantasy” not “Firefox”. And it took me a little while after that, even. AND I USE FIREFOX…. I have failed. I must die an honorable death by committing seppuku.
I’ll be your second. (For those who don’t know, when commiting seppuku, samurai typically had an asistant who beheaded them after the cut was made. It’s considered a bad omen if you don’t entirely behead them in one swing.)
Somehow I knew Sydney would react to someone trying to mug her like that, also her personality matches that of a very dangerous maniac who should be kept away from the explosives of any kind at all times and also NOT allowed to have any sort of caffeine to drink.

Gotta figure that, given ARC-SWAT’s military basis, Sydney will start asking about explosives access / usage (or, at an absolute minimum, a chance to do some training with them) when she joins up.

Caffeine would probably have a calming effect on her ADHD. Adderall (Amphetamine), Ritalin (Methylphenidate) and the like are generally stimulants.
As somebody who has been on both Adderall AND Ritalin, I can assure you, caffeine does NOT have a calming effect.
Really? It does for most people with ADHD.. most stimulants do, due to how the brain works.. might want to have a talk with your doctor if stimulants are making you hyper, might be indicative of a false diagnosis.
An amazing comic so far, and I’m loving how Maxima can just imagine how she handled it after only knowing Heather for a short time. xD

I haven’t read all the comments so someone might have already done this…
I would like to correct your statement of “…meth lite, basically.” and the statement Max makes, “that’s called meth.” Meth, or methamphetamine, is an amphetamine, as ‘amphetamine’ is a class of stimulants. However, that does not mean that amphetamines are derivatives and/or ‘lite’ versions of methamphetamine. Think venn diagram: All methamphetamines are amphetamines, but NOT all amphetamines are methamphetamines.
Why? Many reasons, one of them:
They are both stimulants, and they do differ structurally and chemically by only a methyl group (CH3, a carbon and three hydrogens). However, in the world of chemicals, that lone methyl group can make a big difference. For example, amphetamine taken orally, (a pill) usually takes about an hour for effects to start to kick in. Methamphetamine, if also taken same dose in pill form, is much more quickly absorbed and could in fact cause effects within 10-20min…roughly. (Exactly why meth is so addictive: positive reinforcement).
Increasing the dose of Syndey’s adderall may help, and she probably would have similar side effects that meth users have… but that doesn’t mean she’d be taking meth. Adderall, for most people that take it, is no where near as harmful as meth would be. (As long as the adderall is not abused…)
Anyway, *shrugs* i just know those with ADHD/ADD have a hard enough time dealing with fitting in ‘normal’ standards of task managing and such that it doesn’t help to joke about them being meth (or almost meth) users.

Actually I’m personally grateful for your clarification. ^^ Its weird enough when I tell people I’m on medication for ADHD. Luckily most of my encounters have gone without someone implying I was on meth, but to inform someone who doesn’t know how ADHD is treated that most medications are actually stimulants and not sedatives is an interesting experience in and of itself. =/ Perceptions change when you inform someone you have ADHD, especially if it’s controlled with medication. I get a lot of “you don’t fit the image of ADHD I have” looks when I talk about it.
Oddly enough my first thought after laughing about this strip was to correct Maxima. One word for you Maxima: Desoxyn. It is available, but VERY expensive since no insurance I’ve ever worked with will pay for it. That and practically no doctor will write for it. I have worked in a pharmacy for 5+ years. That is the only reason I even know about it. So to correct Maxima, it can be done. ;) But then again she was in the air force, not a pharmacy, so it is forgivable. I didn’t see this in any of the comments, so figured I would add it. Nice story by the way.

Maxima’s comment derives from someone I know who treated their own ADHD with micro doses of meth since they couldn’t get a prescription for proper meds for whatever reason. The advantage is that one recreational dose would last several weeks when taken in moderation.

Dosage is so important in the way any drug acts on your body. Its effects can change with the dosage too.

They actually do write the prescriptions for (literally) dangerously high dosages of adderall. Plus, it’s not usually prescribed for ADHD. Most of the time it’s prescribed for ADD, which is sort of like Sidney, except not quite as normal.
Just as a for instance, my own dosage is sufficiently high that I can’t drink alcohol (which can make church somewhat interesting).
Removed alcohol wines should be an option, it’s why we switched to making it a required option for communion decades ago. granted that’s mostly our denomination that has both the requirement and supplies it without charge to member churches, not sure what other synods and sects do on the subject.

Adderall is actually Dexedrine, with salts to delay its metabolism. Its a type of amphetamine, but its not meth. They can actually write scripts for meth, its on a lower regulation than marijuana, but other amphetamines have fewer side effects.
Sydney and caffeine? I’m thinking she’d be like the squirrel in Over The Hedge. He drank a energy drink and casually broke the light barrier.

Okay, part of me is surprised by the fact no one else has realized just why Maxima might apparently think all cops are Irish and from the 1930s (though it’s probably a sign of how freaking bizarre my memory is, and how much of a geek I am).
Granted, my explanation won’t explain the 1930s part (which I don’t see, myself), but it will totally explain the Irish part.
Given that Maxima is in her early thirties at this time, and grew up during the 70s or 80s (as in she was born in the beginning of one of the decades and lived through them), I submit that, as a child, Maxima watched reruns of the 1966 Batman TV series. One of the main characters on the show, the chief of police, in fact, was an Irishman, Chief O’Hara. His accent was very noticeable. He was the only other officer besides Gordon to regularly interact with the Dynamic Duo on police matters.
Why do I think this is possible? I grew up in the 90s, and I can remember watching reruns of the show after Kindergarten. She could feasibly have seen the show. The fact she pictures a police officer hypothetically based on Chief O’Hara is thus further example of just how much of a closeted geek she is.
…Dave, if you make it canon that Maxima both grew up, remembered, and possibly enjoys the 1966 Batman TV series, that would be so cool. It could be because she finds it hilarious now, or just has good memories watching them with her family or something.
Plus, it could totally give you an excuse to draw memorabilia from the show, like a model of the Batmobile from the series.

I just started reading this a couple hours ago. There’ve been a few pages up to this point that made me want to comment, but I was too lazy. But I *had* to comment on this one: It made me smile because I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, and I’m currently taking Adderall for it. (Doesn’t seem to be working too well, so I might have to try something else.)
I assume Sydney has the hyperactive type, or possibly the combined type. I have the inattentive type, so there’ll be a lot of things I can’t relate to her on, as far as ADHD goes. :P
I must say, it’s nice to finally learn a few things about Sydney’s background!
