Grrl Power #79 – A History of Violence
I’m not saying that Max’s daydream is actually what happened, especially with the anachronistic cop, but it wouldn’t surprise me if something like that happened.
For anyone wondering, Gwen’s eyes are supposed to be hazel, and not be quite so much “the darkness must feed” colored. But it works with her goth/lolita thing so I guess it’s ok. Apparently ArcLight has an incredibly relaxed dress code.
In case you’re not familiar with Adderall, the generic version of it simply reads “Amphetamine.” Meth lite basically.
Regular commenter Marscaleb made a top 10 video of his favorite webcomics, it’s kind of long, coming in a around 45 minutes, but actually quite well produced. I watched the whole thing and plan on checking out his recommendations. You can probably guess why I mention it here.
I note that the self defence part surprised max or was it the other image from potential ptsd inspiring level combat she had of what syd did to the mugger.
ok so i got to ask what is with pink boxers? and is it suposet to be pink with red hearts? (thats my guess anyway.) but other wise showing a good humer side to max is better than the up tight max of yester-strip.
by the way as one with ADD/ADHD. i can atest to the validity of some of those drugs being one step away from having to be bought off the dealer on the street.
i have had to take one called, get this, ‘meth’elphenadate.
Yeah, I could see that happen. ^^ It must have come as a real shock to the mugger when the pint-sized, weedy-looking girl suddenly exploded into a whirlwind of violence and pain.
Tee hee, the Halo Bio Pic at the top of the Page is too funny :D
that poor, poor sonova…at least he or she was protected when sydney was put behind bars. considering she’s slightly inhuman now i love that Maxima is drinking a monster
oh, and i just saw Galaxyquest again last week. nice ref.
I’m thinking Sydney got pepper-sprayed during that incident, and all she did was say “yum”.
LOL,,, nice one,,, but i dont think her spice resistant extent to peper spray in the eyes,,, but i could see her face the spray,, and open her mouth wide to drink it rather then have it into hr eyes
*gulp gulp gulp gulp* Thanks for the cool drink! *Breathes in the mugger’s face* REEEPEEENNNT!!!
HOSHIT! I’m takin’ JUNIOR METH!!
Oh, dear, that…does look a bit of a scary scene…X3;
Dave, you do realize that medical records are private and accessing (hacking into) them is illegal. Of course that’s just peanuts compared to all the other illegal activities the Arc Department has already comitted.
I guess I didn’t think about that. I assumed the FBI or whoever could get that info if they wanted. However it is safe to say that Leon has boundary issues when it comes to information gathering. “Doors are there to be opened.” etc.
I have serious doubts about a group that stages faked bank robberies for publicity really giving a damn about regulations regarding a person’s medical records.
Actually, it probably isn’t in this case. Those laws explicitly allow federal and police access when required. Given the nature/purpose of this group, they almost certainly fall under those exclusions, and running a security check on Sydney would be a valid reason for accessing that information.
Ok just to clarify a item.
She does, technicaly, have a criminal record for the assault.
Depending on when and the jurisdiction it’s entirely posible that her prescription was part of the court record.
Also, depending on the pharmacy, your insurers, and even an annoying number of Doctors and hospitals, and any “discount plan”, and Ironicaly given the year this was published, it’s actualy posible that you singed an agreement allowing them to share information on your purchases or condition. .Never mind the issues that have come up with the software providers over the same information.
I can totally see Sydney demanding someone to swear by Grabthar’s hammer.
Flask: “That’s all I know! I swear to God!”
Batman: “Swear to me!”
-*-*-*-
Flask: “That’s all I know! I swear to God!”
Sydney: “Swear by Grabthar’s Hammer!”
My favorite part is that this is Maxima’s imagination, so she’s the one who came up with that reference. Clearly, she can totally see Sydney doing that as well!
She makes me think of a bulldog.
Maxima”s face in last panel… Best yet. Also, “REPENT!!!!!”
I came across comic by some random banner ad and, I’m so damn glad that I did. Thank you, this shit is hilarious.
Thanks! Glad you enjoy it. Marketing money well spent!
I can verify that on the 6th reading this comic still made me LOL.
So Maxima has enough geeky knowledge to figure out what Sydney would probably say?
Dose this also mean Maxima also a sci-fi geek? I used Galaxy Quest recently to explain Heisenberg uncertainty principle (and it exploded) and I had to look up Grabthar’s Hammer be for I could remember it.So her randomly knowing a line from a spoof of the sci-fi genre, although no matter how well received it was seems unlikely. So do she have a sign poster of George Tekei?
more like she was remote outpost limited dvd access so everyone watches same movies over and over then little parts just stick with ya. (what I don’t think it’s right that the post be that spoiled by my supply flights)
funny you mentioned George Takei – I was just thinking Zephan bore an uncanny resemblance to him…
I was actually looking at the guy from Big Trouble in Little China and thinking, what were his adventures after this movie ended. Maybe he became the apprentice of Egg Shen, and 30 years later, here he is.
Yeah I have been lurking for a while now. Got to say love the comic, keep up the amazing work!
I know how ADHD-people act… I have a brother with ADHD so I can understand what they are talking about. He doesn’t act exactly “Sydney”, but he really overreacts on very many things. If not exactly at her area of actions. Love your comic very much and look forward to even more comics in the future. I always look forward to mondays because of this. (I still go to school) Thank you so much.
PS: Love Maxima’s little day-dream… :P I can really see Sydney doing that… :D
DaveB, I bow to your incredible imagination.
The only other thing I can say is that I cant wait until you do a “kick-starter” (or something like that) to get your book in print. I am saving up money just to get in when you do get ‘Roundtuit’ :P
Thanks! I’ll definitely do a book once I have enough pages for it. I have a decent break point in mind for the story, but I don’t know how many pages it’ll wind up being at that point. I have to admit I’m a little spoiled by Fred Perry’s Gold Bricks, that’s a hell of a deal, but it’d take me 5 years to put out enough content to fill something that big. I’ll probably shoot for something about as thick as an Empowered.
My only complaint about this comment is that it is only once a week. Dave give up something non essential like sleeping get some super powers and at least give us a Friday dose too.
Good work
I know, I wish I could do ’em faster too. I’d post M-W-F if I could.
5th panel: She says as she drinks a can of Monster (aka redbull): ‘destroy evidence before Sydney knows this place has them.’
Last panel: One then wonders what this hammer is and why Maxima has knowledge of it?
The Hammer she mentions is from Galaxy Quest.
“By Grabthar’s Hammer, what savings.”
I think Maxima’s brain just went a little sideways at the idea of Sydney getting mugged and the ensuing violence. Maxima probably then had to bite her tongue to avoid giggling like a 6 year old girl.
Thank you for reaffirming my belief in humanity. :D
What the hell, no comments? At least none showing up on my screen… And the Who’s Who is down the bottom of the screen for some reason… Daaaaave, I think your site layout is borked!
Site’s the same. I think you should check your browser settings.
Nope it abruptly changed on me too….mayhaps the computer has been watching too much Professor Fate, or just wacked…ok enough of that but yes, there were 120ish ones…including one of mine, and they went LE POOF!, so only 20 show (the latest mind you). Thanks for your time, consideration, and original name.
Oh that. It’s set to open a new page of comments at like 40 original strings and opens at the newest page.
Devious! Well, that solves that…and now…the lar-nevermind, I’ll go hide in shame now.
I saw “Galaxy Quest” but not very many times so I didn’t recognize the quote used. I did wonder about how the tentacled aliens over came the Heisenburg Uncertainty Principle unless it was the Quantum Inseperability Principle (spooky action at a distance) then it worked for their transporters.
Not to confuse “Grabthar’s Hammer ” with “Galaxar” from “Monsters vs Aliens.” Wish they would make another one. Didn’t get to see the Halloween special. All Hail Galaxar!
Aye lassie… boot ‘im in ‘is colee wobbles.
Love the Galaxy Quest reference — one of my all time favorite movies (but I thought it was Grapthar, not Grabthar?)
It’s like translating from Arabic, the romanized spelling can vary a little.
I don’t know, I googled it and found a bunch of sites that spelled it that way.
Maxima’s face in the last panel… Fantastic. Cannot stop laughing.
“Zephan, It’s called Meth…” says the woman drinking Monster in a casual way at afternoon.
Er, did something change about the comments page?
Hey Dave! If you can see this comment – something is different about this page. Layout is misplaced compared to older pages, and there are no comments/discussion visible other than the single ‘leave a comment’ box. I’m using IE9 in W7. All the other pages look the way they used to.
Oh Mog, I’ve broken the interwebs again…
Woah, that is super busted. Crap. That may take a while to fix.
Yerp, Thas prolly my problem – but Dave fixed it. :D
I’m just too lazy to change what I’m familiar with using – I know there’s lotsa browsers out there compared with when I started (picture Flintstones tech, but upfraded to coal-burning)….
‘upgraded’ – the ‘frades are still all the same…..
Well there’s your problem you’re using IE! :D
dil, your problem is you’re using Internet explorer at all, download google chrome of mozilla firefox
or**
Since this is only Maxima’s imagination… Does that means she is familiar with Galaxy quest?
Well, isn’t EVERYBODY familiar with Galaxy Quest?
Why does it seem fitting that Max drinks Monster?
Rather than seeing that it is fitting she drinks Monster, I worry that she’ll give Sydney one!
honestly Sydney SHOULD have the monster. Turns out caffeine has the opposite effect in persons with ADHD or something of the sort. It mellows them out quite a bit
I can confirm this personally for i have ADHD and i feel really calm and focused after drinking a monster
there my favorite seeditive too yay
the reason is that in our brains, the part that helps others focus is effective asleep most of the time and when we take take things like adrenal or ritalin or we drink high quantities of caffeine it actually wakes up that part of the brain first.
“Gwen’s eyes are supposed to be hazel, and not be quite so much “the darkness must feed” colored.”
But, the darkness *must* feed, it hungers! :D
“But it works with her goth/lolita thing so I guess it’s ok. Apparently ArcLight has an incredibly relaxed dress code.”
I get the feeling that one of the perks of being a super in ARCHON is that you can dress however you want most of the time (within reason I assume).
I really don’t think that Archon can afford to have a strict dress code. What with having to really search everywhere to get even one candidate, they can’t be put through the same mind-breaking brainwashing that most grunts get.
especially when someone is able to resist such brainwashing by collapsing an entire city block and then walking away.
I think it’s absolutely appropriate they have such relaxed clothing standards. A standard military wants people to look and act the same within each function, because they need consistency and reliability to create effects an individual is incapable of producing – every infantryman looks like every other infantryman, so when you see them, you know what effects they will produce. The ARCs, though, should be iconoclasts because they do produce effects as individuals, and to gain synergy, must mix/match different capabilities, so looking different emphasizes in the mind their unique capabilities, so once again, you know what you’re getting…
I think that sums it up very well. Gwen’s outfit screams mystic-type.
Also, the darkness must feed! :D
They are also a police force for super humans. Unless you want everybody in matching spandex, like Alpha flight a relaxed dress code helps people see them as human beings (except Dabbler) instead of scary people with god like powers.
Hrmmm…
It occurs to me that Sydney may be more than a match for a few of the team members, and that’s BEFORE whatever Energy-X she has in that tube (please tell me someone gets that reference).
Oh, and I think that Sydney may be the only person on earth able to eat raw cinnamon powder.
For Freedom!
I can eat raw cinnamon powder, in small amounts. The real problem is accidentally inhaling it, not eating it. That can cause lesions in the airways which is not fun and takes ages to heal. I usually take my cinnamon in a paste with a little sugar to prevent that. Seriously, it’s not that big a thing to eat raw cinnamon.
test
You wouldn’t want to eat too much cinnamon because it could mess up your kidneys. Remember all things in moderation.
I use IE because I can use Google Toolbar to bookmark the comics I read, so that no matter whether it’s two days before I come back or two weeks, I can pick up where I left off, no matter what city I’m in or whose computer I’m using. For regular internet browsing, I use Chrome.
Chrome? Maybe I’m one of the two people who really read the user license on that thing. After doing so I decided to never touch it again because I considered it as spyware. If you really must, please consider Chromium instead, it might be a tiny bit better for your privacy.
(I’d recommend Opera (used by me most of the times, because it’s the fastest to operate and in rendering pages) or Firefox.)
Opera is working fine funny that. No need for tool bars either and it gets all the cool bells and whistles before anyone else thinks of them.
Firefox hasn’t had a problem yet either. I very rarely use IE (one Japanese website requires it for downloads) and have used Mozilla products since I first started surfing (or was it just paddling then?) the net with Netscape.
Actually, they do write prescriptions for meth, under the name desoxyn. I’ve done research on antidepressants and antipsychotics once, and found info on it.
https://www.rxlist.com/desoxyn-drug.htm
I think Maxima knows now how Sydney is and came up with a plausible idea for the mugging… save the policeman bit. I like it… And I can see Sydney being ADHD, she is just too hyper…
Would be funny if it WAS an actual Irishman who was the arresting officer. :)
