Grrl Power #777 – Salvage rights
Page 777! It’s the number of the upstairs neighbor of the beast. And a few doors down. Depends on how the building is laid out really.
I’m not absolutely sure who these guys are. For the purposes of the story it doesn’t matter quite yet. Archon has a shit ton of publicity but they’re not a large government agency. They have a lot of sway within their field – basically they get jurisdiction over anything involving superpowers (unless there are weird extenuating circumstances). Aliens should fall under their purview, but for obvious reasons that wasn’t explicitly written into their charter.
That will probably be amended soon, but in the meantime, now that aliens are public knowledge, there are other agencies salivating at the idea of getting their hands on an alien ship with energy weapons, force fields, crazy power sources, you know, the woiks. For instance, every other branch of the military, DARPA, NASA, OSI, Section 31, BPRD, IMF, Fulcrum. You guys get the idea. So these guys could be with just about anyone.
General Faulk! I haven’t draw him in a loooong time. I kept saying he was doing General stuff in Washington, but really I forgot to include him doing stuff around the base.
Speaking of characters we haven’t seen in a while, the guy standing next to Maxima is Irradon, who is the Twilight Council’s alien representative. His being there isn’t a public acknowledgement of the whole supernatural element present on Earth, but he’s stepped in as a sort of interim galactic ambassador.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like!
Okay, I got a couple questions to ask, but I don’t want to hear any answers classified above my pay grade, okay?
General? If you got a crucial new defense capability that could detect an entirely new class of threats and potential enemies, and prove, for sure, that getting rid of that artifact would in fact save the world – would you consent to allow getting rid of that artifact to save the world?
Cora? If the general here agrees to let you save the world, would you consent to release to us the tech we need to build those detectors, and the theory we’d need to trust and understand them? I think that might amount to saving the world twice actually, because we don’t know why those guys came here, so we don’t know that more of them won’t. Or maybe something just as dangerous but more subtle. If we can’t detect them we’re screwed.
I mean – like I said, I don’t want any answers classified above my pay grade. But maybe these are important questions.
Anyhow, I’ll be at the comic shop…..
Let’s get one thing straight, Suit Guy is NOT a fucking General, he’s not even in the fucking military!
The General is the guy sitting next to Cora in panel one
Doesn’t mean he doesn’t have significant authority.
He could be representing the POTUS. Who can issue orders with just one phonecall to their boss.
He could be representing the Secretary of Defense. Who can issue orders with just one phonecall to their boss.
He could be a Senator from the Appropriations or Armed Services or Budget or Commerce, Science, and Aviation and Space, or Security, or Homeland Security committees. All of which could be a MAJOR problem for Archon.
Also, Bear is not saying suit guy is a general. He’s doing a ‘This is what the suit guy could say to the General.’ or maybe ‘here’s what Sydney could say to General Faulk.’ (But I don’t think she will)
We have seen General Faulke have personal direct talks with Obama, and you are now telling us that Obama has to talk through a low-rate suit? o_O
And, no, that is also not strawmaning, have a strawberry shortcake
I’ll try to explain this to you gently: Just because someone has had one or more discussions with the POTUS does not mean that the POTUS is their direct superior or that the POTUS will be the only person they have to deal with within the government.
Obama could have been making a simple ‘morale call’ to congratulate Falk and Archon on going live. We don’t know the specific purpose of the call.
Falk has two stars. That’s a very respectable rank, but also fairly dime-a-dozen in some circles. I’ve worked at the Pentagon. You can’t swing a dead cat there without hitting a brigadier or major general.
It wasn’t just Obama, there was the Canadian guy and the Mexican guy as well, so doubt it was just a ‘morale call’
Yeah I’m pretty sure Archon doesn’t answer to Justin Trudeau and Enrique Nieto – they answer to Obama.
Guesticus, I know that isnt strawmanning. I am not sure you know what strawmanning is honestly (I do not mean that as an insult) if you feel the need to tell me that that is not strawmanning. I’ve pointed out to you when you make strawman arguments.
And also Guesticus, most of the time, the President does not meet directly with subordinates – he usually uses intermediaries. Even when Faulk ‘talked’ to Obama, it was in a briefing with several other world leaders, and Faulk and Maxima were included because they are the two highest ranking people at Archon, which is what the briefing was about.
Said that because nearly every other reply to you has been met with a comment about ‘strawmanning’
Because you frequently strawman. Doesn’t mean you ALWAYS strawman, but you do so quite a bit.
Trust me, when you strawman, I’ll say you’re strawmanning. When you are not strawmanning, I’m not going to say you strawman.
Best way to prevent me saying you’re strawmanning is to not use strawman arguments.
Because, Guesticus, as much as I like you as a person, you strawman a LOT when arguing with me.
I’m cool with you arguing, because arguing is fun if it’s courteous without ad hominems and other personal attacks. Which you usually do NOT do (at least not to non-fictional people). But you do strawman as a regular part of your method of debate, and when you do strawman, I’m going to call you out on it.
And when you don’t, I won’t falsely claim strawman arguments. Because it’s easy to show when you do and you do not, as long as you know what a strawman argument actually is, which I’ve tried to define for everyone in other posts.
Here, you did not strawman. Other places, you have. And I even point out what parts are the parts where you do make strawman arguments.
Why would whoever is asking the questions be attempting to broker a deal between General Faulk and Cora, when the General appears to be on the same side (not just of the table) as Cora?
It’s not the first time someone has been talking about Suit Boy and referred to him as a General
If Cora is bright, and she is, Sydney’s interruption is a great time for her to remind the suits that:
1) The Fel came after her, not Earth or the US;
2) The only reason she was here was because she was repatriating a MIA US Soldier (well, recruit, but say soldier and let them make the distinction if they dare) and you’re welcome because I haven’t heard the ‘thank you’ yet;
3) Any attempt to detain her ship or personnel can and will have repercussions far beyond the capability of the US military to handle (maybe a bluff, maybe not, but let them sweat).
“The Fel came after her, not Earth or the US”
The Fel did not not come after Sydney – they came because of the Fel Artifact that Cora has in her ship.
I mean it would have been a good bluff, but she already let them know that she has a Fel Artifact on board her ship.
I think Oberon means the Fel came after Cora, because she’s the one who got the Fel Artifact and loaded it on her ship, presumably to transport it to be destroyed or contained. And who presumably diverted her ship specifically to help return a high grade military asset to the US as a favor to her friend.
Thanks for picking the right term out for me – I should know more about IP given that I do software now, but those decisions generally happen above my pat grade, I just build the tools. :)
Interesting legal briefs on trade secrets; I think my favorite line was something like “the right to exclude others is one of the primary benefits of property ownership.” Hadn’t thought about it in those terms, but that’s a pretty concise way of putting it.
I’ve actually done business with one of the companies mentioned, it was intriguing to see how thing have played out for them since the cases cited.
Whoops, that was supposed to be a to Pander’s page 2 comment about trademark rights vs copyright or patent.
No problemo. :)
Hmmmm … would Syndey’s “true sight” allow her to see psychic emissions?
Compromise: The Fel ship, dead bodies and their equipment thrown into the sun.
Kora leaves the keys in one of her ships’ escape pods with a working power and propulsion system where the humans can steal it while she’s not looking.
Coming back to this, Sydney is really shining here. She sees that the suits are being *****. She sees that her superiors are opposing them. She makes an excuse to enter the room. And then tells the suits to **** ***. As the person with probably more contact with Cora than any other human, she’s warning them.
I have a theory that most government types in these universes are chill as hell, just sitting at their desks, complaining about all the paperwork their predecessors designed for them to do. The assholes on power trips are making life miserable for the heroes/scientist/whatever because it keeps them out of the office. “Uh, sure thing Gary. We have to stop those Ghostbusters! Go get ’em!”
“… is he gone yet? FINALLY!”
