Grrl Power #768 – Late to the party
I done goofed.
I have to own it. The very first draft of this page had Sydney saying something slightly more innocuous like “When did this happen!?” or whatever. Then at some point while I was drawing it I decided to do the change up gag where someone overreacts to the wrong thing. I don’t know the name of the trope off the top of my head.
Here’s the problem. This whole scene started with Sydney watching the press conference from the firing range. She’s a flake, but that’s just too flaky, even for her. But I just forgot about that page while I was writing/drawing this one.
I realized this sometime Wednesday and I could have fixed it, but I thought just to mix it up, it’d be fun if you guys wanted to pitch some lines for Sydney that hopefully make more sense. I’ll update the comic with the best one.
Whatever else happens with this page, I’m positive I drew either the Interdictor or Archon HQ at the wrong scale. I think the building is way too small. Cora said the ship was 160 meters long, but that seems super small now, even if she meant the body of the ship and not including the gun/gravity sled nacelles at the front.

It’s not being updated any more, so some of the more recent universes aren’t represented, but it’s still VERY extensive. For example, 160m is spot on the same size as a Kazon raider from Voyager. That the Kazon were kinda crap doesn’t actually change that…

This might be a comment more suited for the previous comic, but do you think that the official press release will say that Cora’s ship shot down the invaders? They might want to keep Max’s power levels/capabilities under wraps. (The press HAD been evacuated to shelters, so they didn’t witness the fight’s ending.)
Some members of the press can be more interested in the story than surviving, especially if they think superheroes are between them and danger.
I don’t think anyone’s mentioned this, but Peggy doesn’t have her scar.
Her left eye is also wonky in panel 2.
Sydney has just come back form the shooting range, talking about trying to cut a car in half. So, may I posit, for when she sees the blasted-apart spaceship:
“Holy Papal Nutsack! What caliber did they use???”

Hm- what do you think would be more like an 7th Dan in swearing- “Holy Papal Nutsack” or Holy Papal Scrotum”? I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this prior, but Peggy doesn’t have her scars.
There was some casting problems. Peggy was sick this week and her part is being played by her understudy.
It takes her about two hours in hair and makeup to get Peggy’s assorted tattoos looking just right. Unfortunately, she had an allergic reaction to the glue for the silicone scar prosthesis and they had to go on without it.
The real time sink is in the surgery and physical therapy required after reattaching the understudy’s leg at the end of every season.

Na man that is a M240B my friend its all kinds of cool and it is most defiantly 7.62 trust me a lot heavier and a lot harder punch then a m249.

I’ll leave the calibre debate to those with the first-hand experience, but note that a firing range is likely to have more than one gun of more than one calibre present.

That said comparing these two it looks like the whole building was re-built.

Don’t make the buildings bigger, make the people smaller. Little people dots, and aliens dots with dot arms/tentacles. That should change the scale of the buildings visually to a more appropriate level without having to do a ton of work.
Yeah the building is too small for the people but the ship is too big. I think that’s why some people thought it was flying not landed.
Nevermind, I was really underestimating 120 meters that’s cruise liner size. The ship is to scale with the building then.

I think a simple “WHAT THE ……” would be appropriate. After all, she is supposed to be new to the superhero and intergalactic scene.

Also perhaps look online for photos of similarly sized ships – like the US Ticonderogas which are ~173m long. Interdictor is obviously wider, but should help for scaling.

DaveB seems to be big fan of Michael-Scott Earle. I’m not. I’ve got few of his books, at least (Kindle versions of) Eye of the Tiger, The Dragon Slayer, and Monster Empire (Audible version). I’m not impressed. Elliott Kay is more to my liking.
I would weigh in that the size of Cora’s ship is about right in comparison to the figures standing around. Archon HQ is WAY too small. It scales to be about the size of the dormitory I lived in in college. I would have guessed the Fel ship as being quite a bit bigger than Cora’s ship. That said, its a tough composition to pull off. By the time you pull out enough to get all the big objects properly into the picture you lose all of the interesting detail. As it is, Dave managed to get a pretty big shot of the scene along with Sydney’s reaction into a single page.
Maxima is going to have so much more XP now…
How about: “Max is catching up with me!” or “Holy alien pyramids! Why didn’t you save me some!”

Obviously the first thing that comes to mind is “We’re late and I missed the xp.” Implying Sydney actually assumes Maxima intended to have Sydney grind but she didn’t get any because she didn’t muster fast enough hitting her with some guilt but as everyone came up with something like that I have to go with “It’s Dabbler’s space palace! She was a princess.”

I figured the Glass window was a dome like cover for the pool. and just went with that.

Maybe it’s just me, but it looks like Cora’s ship is out of scale with itself. The cannon closest to the building looks a bit too large for the perspective. As a result, the perspective for just the ship looks like what it would be if the view were far lower and closer. To see what I mean, draw a straight line from the edge of the entrance circle, going out as though going absolutely straight from the Archon building/complex. There is more distance in the picture from that line to the far cannon than there is from the line to the near cannon – which should be an impossibility, given how the ship is parked.
