Grrl Power #729 – Most succubus greetings involve entry
Unlike vampires, succubi do not need permission to enter things. The should definitely still get it. It’s just more polite that way. I’m just saying they don’t have any weird hangups about it.
Cora is aware that most societies will have limits on PDA’s, and succubi fully understand that a rarified commodity is a more valuable one. In this case, sex / access to sexy bits / access to sexual displays. They really were just saying hello in a way that exceeded acceptable thresholds of most places on Earth, but then they switched to just fully messing with Maxima. In panel six, that knowing glance was part “This is what I’ve been dealing with”, and part “She’s so fun to mess with, you want to have a go?”
Individually, they’re both potentially totally competent adults, but they’re a bad influence on each other. It isn’t clear at this point how long Cora and crew will be hanging around Earth.
Panel 1 amuses me because of the height difference between Sydney and Maxima. Sydney is more than a foot shorter than Maxima, so even with Sydney poking her head up the bottom of the frame like that, you got to figure she’s standing on her tip toes. I couldn’t think of any other way to fit them and all the dialog in a panel that size. Well, I could have done a long shot, but that’s not how I do.
Moving update: We accepted an offer on our house, and our offer was accepted on the house we want. It’s all moving along quite quickly, and now there’s like a month long wait until all the closing dates, so hopefully the daily interruptions to my work schedule will be reduced for a bit. At least until we actually close. Then it’s all banks and signing and moving, so that’ll be a busy couple of days.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. $1 and up, but feel free to contribute as much as you like.
Given the degree of affection on display here, I’m now surprised that Cora’s crew is all male.
She has a preference. Not necessarily an exclusive preference.
i’m getting the feeling this is akin to cora (if you’ll pardon the apropos imagery) slipping on a recently rediscovered, familiar and comfortable pair of shoes. she’d half-forgotten how good it felt, and wanted to waste no time reacquainting herself.
Indeed, Cora was just trying to discover if the “shoes still fit her feet,” as it were…
First, Sydney promised herself that she would reward the fox-tail-haired dude for saving her life.
Second (and so smoothly that maybe I shouldn’t count it separate), she might need to replace her upper garment. I think I read somewhere that the fibers get damaged when they stop something, so you don’t want the garment to stop something in the same place twice. Now I am aware that this stuff is version 2.0 of the material, and may have different properties of which only the cartoonist is aware. But I still think something needs to be said about the subject.
Third, Sydney has yet to deploy her illusory wings. Either the battery has already died (not so likely with alien tech) or she has turned them off. What will the others think when she activates them?]
Fourth, this flashback covers about six months, and nearly two of them have now gone by. Of the remaining four, sometime she graduates from “recruit” to “corporal”. I’m waiting. . . .
Ummmm… A cadre composed entirely of recruits and NCOs? Much more likely Syd will be elevated to Private when she passes her exams.
Except, Maxi calls her ‘Corporal’ at the beginning, before the flash-back started (or when they flash-forwarded ended, depending on how you view things)
Aaaah, Look at the comments for “#4 – Big Guns” (where Maxi addresses her as Corporal), first comment, that’d be the one by “Name without gravatar”. Then catch the second first-tier comment (follows DaveB’s comment/explanation) by “KromactheRave”.
#152 shows that Harem is a corporal.
There was a time that Elite Units were comprised of only NCO’s or higher: any recruits who managed to pass the entrance were promoted, those who failed were returned to what ever unit they started from at their previous rank
She probably wouldn’t be promoted to “Private” because of her special abilities. That kind of thing (college degree, pilot’s license, mechanic training) tends to get you brought in at a higher rank/pay grade.
OTOH, NCOs are usually chosen for their leadership skills rather than technical proficiency. We have seen Syd demonstrating some leadership skills, especially in the big super fight (#200++), but those were battle-field tactics, valuable but not sufficient. NCOs usually have to be proficient in barracks dicipline leadership as well.
My thinking is Syd will be elevated to Private (First Class?) and then will demonstrate leadership skills to get Corporal.
So. How long before Cora can display a Maximus hard light form, with gold skin and Cora-colored hair in Max’s style? How long after that will Dabbler… enter?
I think programming it would not take long at all. Probably it would only require taking a photo and telling the software to ‘replicate this look, but retaining the following basic characteristics:’. As for whether that is likely, it depends on whether that turns on Cora.
The child-version of her, suffering from bullies, might have fantasised about living life in a different body. However having fought through that and ended up as a powerful and dynamic figure in her own right, I don’t see that she would be secretly harbouring a need to prop up her ego by borrowing someone else’s persona.
Sexual role-play and hard-light dressing up probably do feature in her persona mind, but I think they would be of a more generic nature (or specifically invented characters/looks, as the case may be). We have already seen a few examples of her wardrobe. All of which still featured Cora, as herself, even if her form changed.
So maybe shiny metallic skin may appeal (although she can do regular metallic just as easily, when she chooses), I don’t think she will try to replicate a bunch of Maxima’s attributes.
Don’t believe Gary Jordan mentioned Maxi’s attributes, other than her ‘attributes’
I can’t and don’t argue with that. She would be role-playing to suit Dabbler’s expressed likes. Teasing. And putting the wind up Maxima at the same time.
On the one hand, I love that they’re pointing out how puritanical and quaint Maxima is being here (a gentle mockery of the fact that the more extreme pseudofeminist views can be as anti-sexuality and anti-pleasure as the most misogynistic of patriarchal societies)…
…On the other hand, Cora’s interactions with Dabbler could be seen as poor behavior on the part of a guest. Cora is an explorer who has been to many worlds, encountered many cultures, and would know to respect local customs.
…And on the other hand, “Word of G-d” is that they’re both just poking fun at Maxima there. Maxima really needs to mellow out a bit. You’d think being able to braid steel bars into ornamental knots would reassure her that yes, she has the respect of her peers, subordinates, and superiors.
fear is not the same as respect.
Correct. And also entirely irrelevant and unrelated to what was said.
Respecting local customs, following them so as not to be an asshole and upset people for no good reason…is not fear, it is respect. And they are not the same, as you said.
Oh wait, missed the second use of respect. And eh…agreed in that the original comment was trying to link unrelated things too.
I think that’s more her having PERSONAL boundaries, combined with actually enforcing (most) of the etiquette of a military structure. And even if they respect her strength and leadership, her personal boundaries is definitely something that Dabbler enjoys disrespecting and pushing up against a bit. :p
She probably is quite happy to try to make Dabbler fear her a bit to respect those boundaries, hence the number of threats she puts her way, along with being very happy to use fear as respect. See her tank display.
Censorship and respect are not synonyms
Maxima has never been portrayed as puritanical.
She is merely somewhat reigned in from the adolescent fantasy Characters who largely make up the strip.
Whilst you are right that Maxima is the visible figurehead, do note that Dabbler says “they”, and she is not one to conceal what she means by a linguistic wimp out diplomatic evasion. Plus personalising her comment, about prudishness, would make it hit home harder, potentially provoking a stronger reaction and amusing Dabbler more.
I cannot imagine that General Faulk or Arianna would tolerate extreme displays anymore than Maxima. Which is, in itself, a reflection on the prudishness of our society and the fact that if they, as Archon’s leaders, did not speak out then their jobs would be endangered. Sexual scandals (including authorities turning a blind eye to sexual misconduct) are far more likely to result in dismissal than other sorts of public outcries.
I would have to agree that Arianna would object to the public displays of affection there – but that’s because she’s in charge of public relations and that could be potentially problematic. General Faulk would probably be smarter than to demand that an alien starship captain adhere to local customs, especially when said captain is showing obvious affection for a member of his command (meaning that he risks damaging a positive diplomatic connection).
Also, by “being able to bend steel bars into ornamental knots,” I’m referring to the validation that comes from not just being physically strong, but also having a valuable skillset. Maxima has repeatedly shown herself to be so easily provoked that her subordinates have teased her about being predictable (“You should all be wearing burkas!” CLICK! ). She needs to learn to be more unflappable.
Is it just the lighting, or is there something wrong with Cora’s eye in panel seven? o_O
I’ve figured out a href=”https://assets.markallengroup.com/article-images/198124/optician.jpg”>the problem you’re seeing!
Look at Cora’s right eye: there is an extra dot in the centre that is not visible in her left eye
Upon reflection, I believe that the problem is a lack of reflection in her left eye of whatever ambient light source is in the room.
You win the Easter Egg prize in DaveB’s Easter comic.
Ooh, well spotted.

Okay, goddamn, I finally caught up. This is one of the few western comics that I’ve become totally interested in and hope to become INVESTED in, eventually. It has absolutely everything I love and would’ve loved to put into my own comic! Anyway, thank you and gods bless you Dave, you are a god among men, sir. SALUTE!
Welcome to the community and pleased to see your enthusiasm over DaveB‘s work.
When you say ‘caught up’ does that include Sydney’s paperback guest appearance mentioned on the right?
That’s a negative. I’ve been reading only this webcomic for about 2 months now, trying to get to the final page! lol! Of course I’m only able to get a few pages in until either family(wife/kids) or work demands my time.
The book is good.
Actually, the whole “Wearing The Cape” series is good.
Next Cora will drop the bombshell that at least all of them aren’t prudes as Sydney was able to have some fun with Frix. This will lead to Dabbler and Harem wanting all the details which Cora can provide via entertainment… uh I mean, security videos for.
Much to the blushing shame of Sydney, and possible quarantine by Max.
BTW why isn’t the veil working on them? I thought it was spell based and not in real control of the typical user it functions on.
Umm, because they would have to be entered into the Veil’s cover matrix, and it mostly just covers native Dirticans (aliens utilize their own disguises)
I would conjecture no one will “drop the bomb.”
Sydney’s parents will probably figure it out by the way Sydney and Frix share drinks at the party.
Dave…
You put your Stylus in a special place (a charger?) when not in use, right?
I ask because Tumblr Awards v112 at 2:41.
Oops.
2:23
In the third panel there, I think dabbler removed all of Cora’s lipstick from the bottom, and then Cora reapplied it between panels? I’m impressed. With both of those.
I know that this is a comic and therefore realism often gives way to “rule of funny”, but as an actual member of the military I find it jarring that Dabbler gets away with so much. In the real military, she would be ejected with a particularly firm boot for behavior like that. Even making someone in the room sexually uncomfortable indirectly is a serious and punishable offense.
Yup, but that is when you have millions of replacements to draw upon to find someone to fill the role. Dabbler (along with the other top-tier supers) has no comparable replacement. If they lose her they lose access to a wealth of scientific, magical and alien technology and resources that nobody else can emulate.
Plus Dabbler is an alien. If she did not behave differently to a human, when put into an organisation heavily optimised for human psychology, then that in itself would be jarringly unrealistic.
Dabbler’s not technically a member of Archon. She’s a “civilian consultant” if I remember correctly from the press conference. As a civilian consultant she can get away with quite a lot more than an actual member of the military. From the comic I’ve gathered that she serves on the team at Max’s pleasure, and Max, for whatever reason, chooses to put up with her antics.
If you reread the early issues, Dabbler is an outside contractor.
None of the sexual shenanigans would be conducive to maintaining discipline or moral, but this is a cheesecake/beefcake romp that doesn’t take itself seriously.
It occurs to me how interesting a space-faring adventure comic starring Cora and her crew would be….
By now, Max should have learned that sometimes you lead with the whip, sometimes you lead with the honey (not a conscious double-entendre there). Instead of berating them, she should have told Dabbler & Cora to look around at the room there in and decide if it’s a good enough room for the other. If they really do have something for each other beyond the physical, they’ll realize that it’s not good enough for the naughty stuff. They need to be some place more like the tentacle closet.
I am absolutely certain that Dabbler does not have the same connection between romantic feelings and sexual acts that the typical human does. Like, at all. Her relationship with sex is more like our relationship with our favorite foods. I would guess that among succubi a sure sign that they care about you would be that they refused your sexual advances, as they wouldn’t want to hurt someone they actually care about. Granted, her partners don’t seem to be much harmed in this universe, but still….
Still, you don’t eat prime rib at the bus stop. There’s a time and a place for everything, and having a good time with Cora deserves a better place than just outside the elevator.
It occurs to me, that given how Succubi are nourished by tantric energy, having *ahem* entering *adjusts tie* as a greeting would be equivalent to the Earth custom of offering guests food and drink refreshment, no?
To be fair, Cora DOES have an eminently squeezable posterior. I don’t blame Dabbler for getting at least one pair of hands to do the heavy lifting. Envy, but no blame.
