Grrl Power #71 – Punk Busting
Who needs to teleport when you can fly that fast? I mean obviously it doesn’t get you through solid objects or into places without being noticed what with the sonic booms and shockwaves and all, but as far as getting across a city quickly, Max could probably beat Harem. (Although I haven’t quite figured out what Harem’s range is, so maybe it’s a closer race than you’d think)
This page is evidence that I’m still hugely amateur when it comes to drawing interiors. They’re supposed to be in a two story room but that ceiling looks awfully low to me. I guess I need to take some snapshots of the insides of malls or something to figure out what I’m doing wrong.
Speaking of which I’ve made the hilarious mistake of putting them in a supposedly high security location… with a flipping skylight. I just have too many scenes in mind there the heroes fly in and out of the place to do away with it. I guess the explanation will be that there’s nothing of critical importance on that level… except that Leon’s office is right there and he has access to everything. I guess the door is normally closed and there’s always a dozen super powered types milling about.

I have a feeling the boom is about to be lowered and the sonic boom is minor compared to what will happen. Also Dave, probably a bit late now, but you could have an iris-type door up there they can fly in and out of. Security coded of course. Trouble is it could never react quick enough for Maxima when she’s in this mood so I expect they opted for other security measures and used the skylight instead.
BTW I assume she gave the tube to the Sgt or Corporal or whatever he was before leaving, right?

I love the look on anvil’s face in the last panel also in remark to the glass problem in the comments it could be the one way mirror so they could look out but any looking over head would see their reflection…or something…or magic glass..yea… :P
auto defence turret and super enforced no fly zone for non-team personel mixed with polarization ability on the windows, add that his desk is under the upper floor soone must enter building to see it and having the window pop open when a secret secure code is sent makes it hard to mess with leon or his gear normaly an oplaquable inpermiable barrier field and beyond mil-spec air filtration sys for emergencys makes him safe from just about anyone but max and harem. at least thats how I read the arangement he may have an AI droid GF super to protect him instead of the shield bit.
Or they just forgot to take a few things into consideration when designing the office.

That the skylight was just a screwup seems the better choice here. The option that there is a sign out front saying “Ultra-Secret, High Security Base for Program X” has clear comic potential.
Wouldn’t be the first to hide in plain sight like that: there are road signs and leaflets pointing people towards “Scotland’s Secret Bunker” all over the East side of the country. (Officially, it’s a Cold War command bunker opened up as a tourist attraction. Unofficially, who knows?)
Not visible in this scene are the cloaking turrets placed atop the roof, giving any errant passer-by’s a view of nothing special, but allowing those inside to still enjoy the natural splendor of fresh air and the foul burning of direct sunlight (as Sydney would put it).
I believe that’s how the entrance to the batcave worked in one of the Batman incarnations. Hologram rock wall, but if you know where to aim, your Batmobile cruises neatly through.
The whole building is protected by a Somebody Else’s Business field…

Been a long time for me also, but I am pretty sure the S.E.P. Field was used only in “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” not in the Hitchhiker’s Guide series. Still an awesome way to hide stuff. I wonder if they painted the roof pink….?
The volume that appears in is “Restaurant at the End of the Universe” of the 5 volume Hitchhiker’s Guide Trilogy (and yes they still called it a trilogy even after the 4th and 5th volumes were released).
Haven’t read the series in over twenty years, so forgot a lot of the stuff that went on in that series.

No, the S.E.P. Field was used in Life, The Universe and Everything. The third book in the Hitchhiker’s Guide series. The field was hiding Slartibartfast’s ship, the Bistromath, which looked like an Italian restaurant. Much easier than trying to make it invisible.
Side note…I know Anvil and Harem are visibly startled at Maxima’s sudden presence, but is one of Harem’s sweat droplets actually crying out in terror?

Yeah the sweat drops are being blown off by Max’s landing, so why not have them screaming. Makes sense to me.
And this is why I like your comic. If it was anymore then once a week, I’m sure I would miss so much.
I think the density of humor on a single page may be partially due to the fact that I can’t create these any faster, I come up with more jokes than I can use just while drawing a page. I was originally worried that I’d run out of material when I started this comic, but I can go to jot a note in evernote so that I don’t forget a gag and wind up writing pages of material.
And that’s a good thing too.
Apparently whoever writes the ticker at the bottom of the live feed has decided they love Sydney. Or more likely the director has told them to stick with the crazy chick and make her a star for 15 minutes.
Panel four confused me for a second before I remembered Arianna is in the other room and not watching at the moment…
Very shortly Harem is going to be the center of an ass-chewing contest between Maxima and Arianna. Mind you, she deserves it for her complete lack of military discipline, but I would not want to be her right now. At least she didn’t panic and run.
She hasn’t run yet. she’s just had time to notice that Maxima has landed rught behind her, what she does next should be entertaining.
I’m wondering if maybe Leon has seized control of the ticker in a moment of boredom, and has been having fun.

The TV teck in one of the previous pages said there was a seven second delay, and the bank has to be nearby because she went to it from work. So with her traveling faster than the speed of sound( around six hundred and fifty MPH) she would look like she was almost telaporting.
Yeah she’d have to decelerate almost as fast as her sonic boom was heard or she would pass her base if it’s in an urban area, that and all the car alarms going off along her flight path would be like a giant neon sign saying “HERE I AM!!!”
Maby just slowing to under the speed of sound just before she gets to her destination say 500 mph or so, and then coming to a complete stop when she gets to where she wants to be. Still looks like telaportation because she’s moving faster than the human eye can see. She probably went that fast in the first place so the bases location is secure.

If Harem shares one mind, why does she need to ask what the TV transmission delay is? She’s at both scenes, observing in real time. There’s no way she doesn’t know exactly when the ambulance doors opened, or when Maxima flew off.
Good point, but it simply may not be something Harem kept precise track of. Could be wrong, but I don’t think any of her selves are wearing watches – and right about then she might just be hoping she is wrong about how much time she has to live.

Regarding the entire skylight thing, I see it as simply giving in to the inevitable.
Consider, you have a bunch of supers in one place, some of whom can fly or do something similar (like superleap, maybe?). If there aren’t any skylights to start with, I am betting they will be made sooner or later. Probably on a semi-regular basis. This way is cheaper than constantly having to reconcrete the ceiling.
I remember in one of the old Super Man comics where the scientist that Super Man used set his skylight up so it would open when ever he flew to his lab. Did you get the idea for this from that comic?
Actually, nope. Just makes sense. If you employ people who can smash through concrete when they are in a hurry, then putting in extra doors for them will save you big bucks in the long run.

Actually, the glowy things are the lenses of her glasses.
Considering that it’s not Sydney, it probably isn’t for comedic effect.

Yeah they fell off when she slipped on the curb cause I was sick of drawing them as Paint Tool SAI doesn’t have a way to make circles… I actually have a stencil I place on the screen. :P

If you remember from Dabbler’s Science Corner, Maxima’s zero range telekinesis form a forcefield around her when she’s flying.
Yeah, but it’s still not nice to have a bug in your eye even if you don’t feel it. So they keep the debrese from going in to her eye’s.
lol dont worry bout the skylight in some versions of the avangers when tony stark led them they had a mansion to wander around in right in the middle of new york but all the really cool stuff was deep underground in a secert base that just happend to be connected to the mansion
I don’t see much problem with the skylight. If she can fly- and THAT fast (awesome)- the government might as well make it easier for her as she’s a really big military asset. I suppose some sort of high-durability security doors hidden in the sides can quickly close the skylight to prevent intruders or the like.
The skylight is probably made of Transparent Aluminum. And may or may not be protected by a Force Field.
BTW, is couch Harem the original one? If yes, can we call her “Harem Prime”? ;-)
Prime only in the sense that she hasn’t dyed and tatted up that one. It may be impossible to determine which one is actually the real “original.” She calls that one “girl next door” or “farmers daughter”

Yeah it’s 5 including the original. I agree it’s worded a bit weird. The white haired one is “co-ed” or “schoolgirl” – basically something to let her prance around in pleated plaid skirts and whatever sexy college age stuff I feel like drawing her in. We’ll get a look at her on the next page.

Hmmm..Actually that brings an intresting question…Would a Harem’s injuries heal after…let’s say “Recalling” and recreating?
If they do, I’m sure Maxima would be willing to reapply the injury.
How about: it’s not a skylight, it’s an artificial lighting array with cloud projections, designed to imitate sunlight, and reduce claustrophobia. Above it is metal.
I don’t know that I agree you got the 2-story ceiling wrong. It’s a pretty low-angle perspective, and the women would dominate like that. I’ve seen photos from the same angle, and the people can look ten-stories tall. (Google low-angle shots.)
That’s not a bad suggestion but I still want people to be able to fly in and out. And I didn’t totally botch the background, I’ve seen people do worse believe me but it still feels more claustrophobic than I’d like.
1st it isn’t glass it is some type of new transparent alloy similar to starwars transparasteel
2nd the roof and the surrounding landscape of their building is just bristling with discrete and powerful automated weaponry. nothing between the size of nano cameras or an aircraft carrier has the capability to get past by either means of stealth or brute force. when i think discrete i think like the x-men mansion, it looks like a garden but then all the statues and fountains start trying to kill you.
3rd all of the supers have something like what stargate had to identify the SG teams to open up the sky light to let them in. whether or not someone has to give confirmation to let them in depends on their rank. These can have security features to ensure that they cant be used if they are stolen
Maybe that transparent aluminum talked about in the Eugenics Wars of Star Trek.
The only mention I recall of Transparent Aluminum is in Star Trek 4, to date there has been no film or TV episodes covering any kind of detail about the Eugenics Wars, other than some scattered references and the small amount of information given in the original series episode “Space Seed”. Not saying TA isn’t a good choice, just a bit of pedantry about where the term originates.

There was a two part novel on the “Eugenics Wars” as seen from Garry Seven’ & Roberta Lincoln’s perspective. I was only able to find and read the second one. Plenty of name dropping in it like any fan would do but by a professional including the mention of that particular kind of synthetic aluminum with an altered absorbsion/reflection index.
I wonder how Maxim deals with wind resistance? And the horrible roar traveling that fast. Maybe just her over all resilience. Maybe hidden ear lids to even for pressurization?
Interesting, I was unaware of those novels. Still I tend to regard most Trek novels as being not worth my time (cause they are never an official part of the world (ST) where they supposedly take place) so I probably wouldn’t bother reading them. Any more than I would read the 2 Smallville books I have been given, or the Highlander books I have seen. That is all just a personal preference though.
Actually, with the angle and the fact that you are making Maxima into the specter of DOOM, the room looks great in the background.
It might be a touch of artist insecurity, because I think it looks just right.
They make some realy strong plate armor glass out there, just have the frame work be made of titaniun alloy and you don’t have to worry about it. Plus a auto gun turret or two to take out those pesky pidgins that keep flying over the sky light pooping on the windows.
That’s actually a really good point.
Tempered and fiber reinforced glass is silly strong.
A local car dealer uses a two inch tempered glass plate to put cars on display on.
And that’s without any sort of metal scaffolding.

made no mention of material for the skylight but was saying if the rec center was infiltrated there would be additional defences for his cubical so he would be safe while other team personel handled the fool and that the skylight would be reletively secureed against unauthorized access.steelclaw the tie in with the collars was a good idea, did it come from my earlyer comments on the collars probly having gps/radio systems?

Well now we have another power for Maxima—flying! That metallic skin and hair can handle those high velocities of breaking the sound barrier but her clothes must be able to too. Is the glow in her eyes an affect of her power or just “blazing” with anger taken as a visual metaphor in the comic?
As for the sky light is it a real one or fake? Are there secret ingress into their base either under ground, in a mountain or some huge fortified building? If it is in town I would expect getting in an out of the ARC portion of it would be hidden from sight. I shall await your unveiling whenever you derm it

Short-purple-haired Harem establishes the necessary scale in the room so that it looks exceedingly tall. The room naturally felt huge, I had to look around for why.
Just let her roommate with Halo for a year, that’ll put a dent in her amour, ahem armor.
well,, it may not be related to tod ay’s comic,,,, but i have been imagining sidney’s reactions to the diferent members of the team,,, harem,,, no real initial reaction other then asking what her powers are,, and maybe comparng herself to her,,,dabbler,,, i see a cloud of chibi sidney pocking and manipulating her arms around her and dabbler with a look of anoyance as she try to swat her away,,, the team member i have most trouble figuring is anvil,,, i can see a scene for an anime,,, but for comic,,, would be imposible to do,,, maybe a multi square thing,,, like sidney standing,, then big shadow,, and sidney looking way up to see anvil standing between her and the light after making some comment

As many folks have pointed out, who’s to say that the skylight is made of glass? After all we have Dabbler and who knows how many other scientist/mages working with this project. Could be be a foot of titanium they just made transparent. And kudos to Robert for pointing out the news blurbs! Totally missed that until I saw the comment. I LOVE THIS COMIC!
