Grrl Power #709 – Para-go-on
Cora has been known to help people just because they need help, but she’s like, 80% Paragon, 20% Renegade, and usually has a slightly more mercenary attitude about how and where she applies her talents. Sydney’s entirely altruistic motivations caught her a little off guard.
Of course, it’s easy to be altruistic when you’re doing it with someone else’s spaceship.
People have brought up the question as to how much help these refugees actually need. Fracture Station probably has homeless people living on it, and it hasn’t been established if there’s any sort of social services or support. The fact is, the administrating government of the station is quite well off, but they don’t want to be too generous with social support, because they’re worried it will attract galactic vagrancy. Their solution is to have a jobs program in place. The docks always need workers, and there’s always maintenance. If you can carry stuff, you can find a job. If you can weld or rewire stuff, you’re even better off.
Basically if you get stuck on the station, you can get a grunt work job until you can book passage off the station. They’re not big on long term indolence.
So, some of these Alari refugees would probably be okay. The ones with little kids like this mom here would have a rougher time of it, and if Cora can take them to an Alari planet, they’ll probably do better.

Say what you want about the overall art’s quality, but sometimes we stumble upon gems like Altus and the kid’s facial expression change in their two panels that are just BEYOND everything else in subtlety and so damn fitting the characters.
It’s really impressive.
damn, 300+ pages in and sydney’s still this dumb? impressive
You equate compassion with stupidity? You do realize that’s a classic “foolish villain” trait, right? I’m pretty sure it’s even on the evil overlord list.
Compassion is stupid when not from a position of power. Those you are compassionate toward will at best remember your kindness and repay it (likely to others); at worst, take advantage of everything you have and everything you are.
Once you have a stable footing the equation is different. Compassion from strength only builds rappaport and goodwill.
Do not equate cautiousness with stupidity, either. That’s a “foolish hero” trait. ;)
Sydney is in a position of power right now though.
yeah thats bullshit, compasion is compasion either from a position of power or weakness, and yeah some people might try to abuse your compasion but usually those are pretty easy to identify and rarer than fiction would like most to believe (there are some pretty horrible people irl of course im not saying that they dont exist but fiction usually scales everything to 12 so a bunch of assholes gets translated to “everyone is an asshole”)
trying to even argue that compasion is a mistake independent of your current position and either if you are a multibillionare or can barely make it to the next meal is as other have said a usualy super villain trait, in fact those that have less usually give more (albeit of course if you are rich and compasionate props to you, specially if you are willing to invest those resources to help even more people)
Hey idiot, you realize a lot of poor folks actually had their situation improved over history BECAUSE they showed compassion to someone who was well off in a moment when they needed it?
Compassion is always good. Period. Anyone who tells you otherwise is, well, frankly, Donald Trump.
Ah people who only know what CNN says about trump, you’re a partisan hack and have no business speaking.
> Compassion is always good. Period. Anyone who tells you otherwise is, well, frankly, Donald Trump.
I hear he has given out cash to his employees by hand. When asked for reason, he said “Nothing in particular” or something such. Also closed down border facilities that were called “concentration camps”. Works for me.
The Screaming Skull of Karaoke sounds truly horrifying. Maybe it’s death metal though… Hmm…
“Not everyone’s chosen by fate or favored by the gods. And, sometimes you just sort of stumble into it. But so long as you’re trying to do the right thing and you’re not being a jerk about, doesn’t that make you a hero?”

Just going to point out today, after a week when Israel has been bombing away the homes of over 17,000 Palestinians, and there’s still over 70 million stateless refugees in the world from the last fifteen years of US imperialism, this is a nice comic to read. You don’t need a reason to help people, as the saying goes.
