Grrl Power #702 – Meet and groom
One of Sydney’s unofficial powers is the ability to turn on a dime, emotionally speaking. She has big reactions and big swings. One might almost describe her as manic. Not manic depressive. Just manic. Not sure if that’s a thing, but it’s Syndey’s thing.
I read something like 130 novels last year, (during my morning walks, not while I was supposed to be working on the comic or anything) including rereads of a few series. All of them were pulp sci-fi or fantasy, a lot of them happened to have haremy themes in them. I don’t know why I lean that way when I’m looking for new books to read, I think most novels with harems kind of slam the characters together too quickly and there’s little emotional weight to the relationships, but every genre has stand outs.
Anyway, that’s been on my mind a lot lately, so I thought I’d have fun with the reverse harem thing on Cora’s ship. I might have leaned into it a little hard, as I’ve never seen any sort of harem setup where the harem gets introduced along with, as Sydney puts it, their sexual resumes. Unless that harem story is just straight smut, then it’d probably be okay.
If reverse harem books interest you, the one I’ve read and can recommend is Dragon’s Gift by Jada Smith and May Sage. It’s a little more romancy than your typical pulp fantasy harem novel, but there’s a decent plot and good characters.
I updated the stale vote incentive with some old pictures I had of Cora, including the one I finally found of her Naga armor. It’s from 1992, so yeah, probably older than a lot of people reading the comic.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. $1 and up, but feel free to contribute as much as you like.
omg, frix is the best character. tell me what the hot goat dog daddy can do.
One word: Knot.
yee
Yes, because a baseball sized base that ties you together is something that might…excite humans?
Now the barcalum is another story; which I understand from furres is a give or take feature, some are iffy on if it might hurt…or if having one and being a biped might feel odd; the other side is *controlled erection*.
Based on the existence of (and notable profitability of) certain toys, there is no ‘might’ about it exciting some humans.
I find no usable results on the word ‘barcalum.’ Would you mind clarifying the word here?
I’m assuming it is a miss-spelling of
grrrr. It ate my link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baculum
You are correct, it’s a typo.
It did go with the theme though… barcalum… Bark-alum
That’s what I was thinking
Yeah, a mix of regular type an “a” instead of a “u”, and mental typo thinking of a “Barkley”.
Considering the nerve endings of the clitoral organ (which is much larger than the external bit appears to be) responds best to pressure inside the vaginal canal…yes, a knot might be considered exciting. The Sybian machine’s success is mostly due to how it directly stimulates that organ with a forward “thumping” motion, simulating pressure.
(I am not advocating anything illegal here, and certainly not sharing links, just sharing medical information.)
Speak for yourself … responds best… we are all different.
All different, within certain parameters. Just like every other snowflake, responds best to being told that they are special and unique.
Careful! Snowflakes have a noxious defense when told they are not so special: they will tell their mummy on you!!
So, Dabbler will hear that Sydney made requests of a personal nature from crew members.
Also you recommend a book with dragon in the title but don’t manage to make it interesting. I’m STILL going to take a look. Dragons are – to me a lot like Sydney thinks of furry things.
The Dragonriders of Pern.
Great book series. Lots of Filk based on those:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiJzlcs-Ks8
Also Dragon singers of Pern – I liked the musical bent of it – eg the bards of olde
I have never liked the ”Dragons are strictly dumb and evil” slant a lot of stories use.
I
Well, up until The Hobbit, dragons were mostly vicious beasts. Smaug was the first well known portrayal of an intelligent dragon in fiction (Fafnir of Norse mythology not counting due to having been a dwarf who was turned into a dragon as a curse caused by his greed). And then Ann McCaffrey helped popularize dragons as non-evil.
You mean in Western fiction
Yeah, Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away could be considered new. I don’t know if they are based on older stories.
Well, I’ve always had the idea that anything ancient like that had to be sneaky and cagey ego intelligent
Are you referring to the Harper Hall Trilogy, namely “Dragonsong”, “Dragonsinger” and “Dragon Drums”? Love it, have loved it for decades!
just reread dragonsong and singer over my holiday break.
Bingo! If you liked those you might also like the ‘The Brain & Brawn Ship series’ – The ship who sang, and Crystal singer series books too
Once Dabbler hears of this She’ll probably try to start building Sydney a furry harem. It’d help Sydney, while embarrassing her at the same time. Plus it’d probably make Maxima go volcanic level of enraged. So a triple win for her.
Well the first member of Sydneys harem is already a tentacle demon so some furries is hardly going to upset things.
Well, that is until someone in a meeting hacks a hairball…!
I do wish that everyone’s favorite Golden Stick in the Mud was here with Sydney right now for this very reason. Would Maxima fly off the handle at Cora for the Harem even though its her ship, crew, the fact that everything seems to be consensual, and the fact that they are Aliens? Would Maxima still voice her opinion, but begrudgingly respect Cora because Maxima is a Military Officer first and foremost? And I think a big missed opportunity would be Maxima being among a group of Aliens who would still find her attractive, but because they don’t know she an Earthling just see her as a typical, (which Maxima would be because she is not on Earth) Alien? Also, Cora would tease the hell out of Max because Dabbler probably told Cora about Max!
Oh great, now I’m looking forward to Cora and Maxima meeting and can’t think of anything else.
And the Seed is planted! Dave, you must make this fated meeting happen, Dabbler, Cora, and Maxima all in the same room! Think of the Chaos!
The Fires of Caldarus is a good dragon book. No sequel yet though.
E.E.Knight’s Age of Fire series. First three books each follow one of three orphaned hatchlings and the different lessons they learn about the world. Then they meet up again and need to save their world.
Brushing the fur, huh? So that’s what they’re calling it nowadays? Kinda like Tipping the Velvet?
Lol that phrase came to mind as well, haven’t heard that since that show was on tv.
The thought occurs that Frix is the only crewmember of Cora’s who wears any clothes at all!
Given the…relationships on this ship, he can probably fix that.
Well, “meat or machine, he can fix it” – so, yes, yes he can XD
hard light thigh clothes might not go well with fuzzy fur, or having a technopowered outfit might be a safety hazard for a spaceship mechanical engineer that needs to tinker with other technostuff that needs repair
Actually, hardlight clothing is ideal for fur, since it goes on uniformly and evenly – most clothing, you have to worry about something going “against the grain” of the fur, which is annoying/painful (try petting a dog from back to front only). Or you have to re-“smooth” yourself after the clothes are put on, but it’s a bit of a hassle. Plus, a hardlight bodysuit is much less likely to let stray hair out in surgery.
The point of not wearing tech while fixing tech is quite valid though.
I fear of Frix’s safety. He definitely NOT safe in both meanings.
Between Werewolves, Werebunnoes, Were Dire Honey Badgers and now furry goat cat men, I fear Sydney is now way past us mere Gnerdy human mortals getting her attention.
I’m actually starting to wonder less about Sydney’s proclivities and more about DaveB‘s ^.^
Dave secretly took note of Yorp.
That’s no secret, just google Dynotaku and wonder no more.
The author that brought us Dabbler as the resident sex-goddess?
Poor Barkley. He’s been replaced and forgotten so quickly.
As a gay man, I can definitely appreciate the reverse harem.
as a straight man, i appreciate it quite less XD
… also makes me all kinds of self conscious of my body image..
As a bi man, both intrigue me, as long as it’s all consensual, etc…
If you don’t like how you look might I suggest working out.
oh, but i like more being a lazy slob than i like looking good
As a person, I approve of equal sexy times for all, and thus advocate for more harems made of men due to their relative shortage in fiction.
not sure why we’re calling it reverse-harem – it’s still one person of a gender with a bunch of persons of the other genders, in a limited and guarded locale that produces exclusivity. Reversing that would be…I dunno, a bunch of people with no attachment coming together for communal and public intercourse?
Orgy, you are thinking about an orgy
Not…necessarily – an orgy can be any degree of relation – total strangers to very close friends/lovers. Orgy just means lots of people. I specifically contemplating an orgy that has 0 (or, as close as you can get and still organize the…event?) interpersonal connection – complete and total strangers, specifically. Also, specifically out in the open in public view.
Put it another way, there is nothing preventing a harem from having an orgy – using it as the definition of a reverse-harem doesn’t really work, assuming someone accepted my thought experiment as that definition?
Very much so! They’re all extremely sexy <3
Poor Frix. He really thinks that was a euphemism, and is gonna be VERY disappointed.
Poor Frix. He really thinks that was a genuine request, and is gonna be VERY disappointed.
Poor Frix. He really doesn’t know what to think, and is gonna be EVEN MORE confused.
Poor Frix, he really gonna VERY think of his place in the universe, and is gonna be REALLY well groomed
Frix: I WAS GROOMED TO WITHIN AN INCH OF MY LIFE!
Cora: …Did you like it?
Frix: …I have the most confused feelings right now.
We wouldn’t expect anything less from a friend of Dabbler, though, so I’d say the sexual resumes are warranted here.
I have a similar reaction when I see someone with really long hair… Just want to brush it or braid it… looks so soft! But I have a higher rate of success to keeping that to my inside voice than Sydney does :D
Well I have long hair, its that ginger red color, and you’d have to ask my gf first.
I met two gals (separately) like this…
Except they did ask.
And I consented (of course).
All sides were pleased (yeah, I find… being groomed(?)… pleasant)
Cons are sure great. Should go to another, someday (missed quite a lot… (-.-‘ ))
As for you… go for it?
CapriCon is coming up, Feb 14-17, in Wheeling IL (Northwest suburb of Chicago) :-)
At least two of us GP fans will be at Capri then.
Look me up in the dealers hall at the Katz themed t shirt table (I’m the one not selling shirts) and say hi.
Kinda far for European, so… I’ll pass on that one.
I can’t help but note that Sydney went from “politely prudish” to “borderline sexual harassment” in less than twenty seconds.
I say “borderline” because this is the subculture she is in. When in Rome, do as the Romans do (or at least smile politely and don’t pass judgements on them for not adhering to the customs of your own tribe).
that’s because she sees him as a pet to brush more than a sexual partner
As far as romantic fantasies go (without being downright Romances) might I recommend the Tiger and Dell series? No harem action, but still good, with an interesting world and magic system.
…Did anyone notice that one panel ago, when Frix was introduced, his wrench was hanging at his side, but when Sydney is up close and personal, it’s suddenly upright? I smell innuendo shenanigans x)
Possibly, though he is holding it in his hand, so the change in posture, and maybe a defensive reaction to the encroachment of personal space by an unknown is the cause.
Well, from the looks of it, it is quite RIGID indeed.
Fuzzy Goat Pup wins…. fuzzy Goat Pup always wins =3
Now I get why Sydney is not a regular with the razor. She be liking the fuzzie.
Little bummed out Frix has a pipe wrench. I would have thought sonic screwdriver more relevant in a Corellian Ship.
I dunno, I kinda like the idea that even as things get insanely high tech, there’ll always be need for nuts and bolts to be tightened.
…You’ve obviously never suffered from ingrown hairs. I gave up shaving my legs a couple decades ago because it was just awful. (And no, the guys I’ve been with haven’t bothered…especially after I said I’d shave or wax mine if they did theirs. ‘S only fair, amirite??)
Sounds fair to me.
Women got along without shaving their legs for thousands of years, after all, and somehow it wasn’t an issue.
You are in all kinds of trouble if he starts in cycling, those boys seem to wax eveything
Have you ever tried to clean gravel, broken glass, sand, what-have-you, out of a deep scrape? Surface hair 1) Just gets in the way, and 2) Is another contaminant that has to get cleaned out of the wound. And I used a Lady Remington, thank-yew-verra-much. The idea that shaving is an aero aid is a myth, there is no measurable drag difference between hairy and shaved legs.
Seriously, cyclists shave for hygiene reasons. Except when the doctors shaved a few layers of skin off my upper thigh to put over the hole in my lower leg to replace the chunk that blew away when I got hit at 60 MPH (100KPH)
I don’t think he is wearing the hard light. It seems it would feel weird with it pressing on fur. I know when I wore skin tight clothing it feels odd if you have a lot of body hair and if you are doing a lot of movement the hair tangles and pulls and it gets uncomfortable fast…
I’d assume that hard-light tech could fix that. Conforming perfectly to the fur, or something.
Maybe he’s as bald (all over) as the proverbial egg, and the fur is his hard light setting.
wow, cool concept. yeah I suppose. I still don’t think it would be very comfortable if I was furry… the fur wants to breath… :)
Mania is definitely a thing. The thing about it is that it isn’t necessarily a good mood, as mania intensifies it is not uncommon for irritability to intensify and can lead to violence or anxiety.
Overall I think Sydney is a good candidate for Manic Syndrome.
Severe cases can be… problematic. Delusions and erratic behaviour being common.
While Mania is usually mentioned as part of bi-polar disorders, it can be found as part of other disorders, and as the side-effect of certain things like some medications.
Considering the AMOUNT of medication that Sydney is on I’m honestly surprised that I didn’t think about that one.
“You don’t even know if our species are sexually compatible.”
“The hell I don’t. I can see fingers and a tongue from here. Everything else is gravy.”
– exchange between Mickey (an alien cyborg) and Mary (from Off the Wall at Callahan’s by Spider Robinson)
Gotta love the Callahan’s books. Please tell me you’ve read the series with his wife, Lady Sally, too!
I only saw “Lady slings the booze”, is there more?
Note to self: Sidney loves fuzzy people.
… to be completely honest with my fellow nerds here, not sure how I would react meeting a actual Cat Girl so I can see this as a *somewhat* reasonable outburst (At least she asked to touch first, guess that’s ‘trying’ to be polite. No need for security… yet… she does have that tentacle thing which would make me nervous)
Just me or is there a Nightwing vibe from Frix’s fur pattern? No?
I’m just obsessed? Yeah that’s not surprising…
Nope, I can see it too, maybe Nightwing got bitten by a were goatdog, doggoat, gog or doat.
Is ‘grooming’ simply grooming…or is it foreplay? Might need some Yiffy-Lube.
guh-ROAN!!!!
Btw really like the back scotches of Cora. Can see a bit of Adam Warren in there.
I also am wondering if the Heart collar and heart based buckle on Cora is a nod to Cutie Honey San… :)
New vote incentive, YESSSSS!
Ps not older than me I was like one year old then.
Pssh, kids. In 1992 I was 34…
Ooh, I may have a new favourite panel!
*preens fur, until it looks irresistibly fluffy and strokable*
*pats Yorp*
Sorry. Couldn’t resist.
*brushes Yorp’s fur*
Whereas Dabbler could actually “turn on” a dime…
As funny as this page is, I still said, “Cora, why?”
It is fun to have someone more outrageous than Sydney play off her, though. …And I just realised that’s been a huge part of the comic.
I AM OLDER THAN YOUR INCENTIVE! not by much, but still. three years or so is three years.
So Sid is a filthy furry.
There has been no indication that Sydney dresses up in a fur-suit, or even wears so much as cat-ears or a bunny-buttplug, she just likes the furry and the fluffy
Nothing filthy about being a Furry, we are just like everyone else. With an unusual hobby, we are fans of Cartoon animals. It is a fandom, nothing more nothing less.
You said that like… “filthy furry (because they’re all perverts)”… You might as well have said “filthy gay (because they’re all pedophiles)” or “filthy bisexual (because they’re all cheaters)” or “filthy Republican (because they’re all Nazis)”… Might wanna tone down the hatred for a kink that’s not your own, and separate out the fact from the fiction / self-delusional fantasy.
The vast majority of the furries I know are decent people who just think differently. Their thoughts & preferences don’t harm anybody. Most gays I know are not pedophiles; in fact, there are vastly more straight pedos than LGTBQIA+ (I prefer using SAGA which stands for Sexuality And Gender Acceptance) out there. There are far fewer “cheater” bisexuals than straight folks, like waaaay less.
And lastly, there are Republicans who do oppose Nazism, rather than support it…whether openly embracing it and/or its ideas, or simply by refusing to do anything about it when in positions of power that could stop its spread. (Nazis, I must remind everyone, literally want to denigrate, debase, torment, torture, maim, and/or murder others simply because they exist, & just want to live their lives in peace. How can you not want to oppose all of that?? *ahem* But I digress.)
Purity culture, and the mores and false morality of neo-conservative Christianity in particular, do far more damage to others’ lives than furries’ proclivities ever have, or ever will. Take comfort in the fact furries won’t be interested in you…because most furries don’t like bigots, or people they fear will harm them. They just want to live their lives in peace…you know…as in, simply exist.
Be mindful of your thoughts, young padawan, for such thoughts can lead you down the path to the Dark Side.
I think this here is one of them memes
https://www.reddit.com/r/furry/comments/1gi1w5/so_this_is_some_outsiders_view_of_geek_hierarchy/
I was laughing until I located myself, four or five rows deep. Still grinning.
Thank you for providing an excellent example of why furries are gross, Ladyofthemasque. Trying to tie your fetish to the struggles of the LGBT+ community?
Disgusting.
You think kinky people haven’t struggled? Haven’t lost custody of their children, been fired from their jobs, been ostracized by family, just for being who they are? And they don’t have *any* legal protections.
It has been my experience that the LGTBQIA+ (think Ill call it SAGA too, I like that) group gets a lot of support from the furry community, even the straight furries because they tend to encompass sexual orientations not of the “normal”.
And there are some Furries that do not have a sexual spin on their association. You throwing them into the filthy furries category too.
Native Americans believe that everything has a spirit and a soul, and that and animal spirit embodies, attaches or conveys influence empowering a person with the trait of the animal.
A Lot of furries who identify with a specific animal strongly can tell you it feels very much like this, like there is a soul coexisting, or entwined with our own.
Me? Its a dragon spirit, but it may be a crocodile with a delusion of grandeur. :P
I love that you statted her out with FASERIP stats from Marvel Superheroes!
I wasn’t aware that having a short attention span was a super power, you learn something new everyday.
I have no problem with the all characters other than Sydney are muscular Greek Adonis Body type.
That is just part of the story being told.
I do think Frix is a missed opportunity. By all means make him a muscular slice of beefcake as that is clearly Cora’s type. #MandatoryGymTraining
But Frix offered a unique opportunity. With his fur his rigged abs would be softened and less distinct. An opportunity to blend the hard line 0 body fat muscles with the soft furriness that is clearly appealing to Sydney.
Instead he’s more of the same with a odd color tone and a few friffs of fur on the edge but little to demonstrate how soft and fluffy he otherwise might be.
Not a critism of the comic.
Not something that will change how much I love the comic.
Just an observation of a missed opportunity to push the boundaries of the existing art.
Sydney already admitted that she would be into someone like Frix back when Dabbler was talking about humanoids with fur, as opposed to hairy backs.
Here’s the link :)

Harems and Reverse-Harems are best as campy porno. Any attempt at realism quickly reveals the fact that… historically speaking… harems are horrible to live in! (And not just for the women, the experience is unpleasant for the men too. That is why the ‘successful’ examples of historical harems had the male never enter it except for sex – and often not even then!)
unless it’s a succubus/incubus harem where they practice sex as often and as lightly as human eat dinner
when you propose them a quickie, it’s like offering a cookie to an human
Hold on a sec… a tattoo on fur? Pretty positive that wouldn’t work for vary long.
Someone skipped the entire first page of comments
I feel the need to point out that the proper term for a ‘reverse harem’ or ‘male harem’ is actually ‘Stable’…
And with all these stallions, I think it’d be very well-equipped.
Self outing?
What if the relationship in a stable were a bit unstable?
Would it still be a stable?
Something occurs to me.
Cora introduced each male on the ship with sex resume; but not Frix; in fact it was a quickie introduction. (Frix Sydney, Sydney Frix). Something tells me Frix either isn’t the sex up type.
or, his sexual characteristic is obvious once you see him “he’s the cuddly fluffy one”
STONE CLOUDS DING DONG tall wolfy mechanic with VERY similar color scheme
Why am I not surprised when I saw that their engineer is some sort of fuzzy alien? I mean I’m pretty sure this would of happened and that he will be the one to keep Sydney occupied….. in more ways than one… yep my brain just went there into the gutter… interesting mental image though.
I hadn’t noticed but Florence and Rocket are furry mechanics also. Oh. Almost forgot. Chewbacca.
+1
Apparently to be a good mechanic in Sci-Fi, you need to be a furry, have some sort of disability, some sort of out-of-the-norm body type, or be scottish/irish (which for some people might be a disability – please no scottish or irish people hate me, I’m joking).
Except for Kaylee from Serenity. There you go Kaylee, always bucking the trend. Shiny.
I’d be interested in seeing your reading list for those 230 novels. ;p
Instead of my normal fantasy fare, I’ve been leaning towars Wuxia/Xanxia style novels lately… Its a very interesting subgenre.
I think I just noticed a mistake,
second to last panel Frix has white fur spots on his sides, at least one of those should be visible in the last panel but isn’t.
