Grrl Power #692 – Common ground
I wanted that final panel to look like a soft-R-rated… basically an orgy, but work safe, cause it’s not that kind of a comic. As usual, my imagination far exceeded the time needed to draw such a thing, so I started adding confetti and balloons in the background to make it look a little crazier. That sort of made me think of Dabbler as an X-Rated Pinkie Pie. The point being that the first person who makes Dabber her maid of honor is in for a shock when she throws the bachelorette party.
I guess in panel three, ThanoSydney is wearing one of those foam Hulk smash gloves that’s been painted flesh colored. I mean, to explain why the orbs are so small compared to her hand.
This page colored by Kieth.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. $1 and up, but feel free to contribute as much as you like.
And that last panel is the Disneyland version!
Now we need the ‘not family-friendly’ version…
“It’ll come up in a few pages.” Well if that had happened in the last panel it would DEFINITELY make it NSFW.
Would make a really good vote incentive, just saying. Even just a larger version without word balloons and Cora in the corner.
Ain’t no party like a Dabbler party…
Regarding panel #3, I would think that Sydney’s imagined “Evil Sydney” would have a Spock beard. All proper nerds know that evil versions of good people have Spock beards.
And those that play Saints Row know that that goes double for female villains.
Or i this case evil pauldrons. everyone needs pauldrons even if they made of cardboard and sticky tape
Or pauldrones, for added firepower…
Quick no one show Sydney the relivant Shlock mercinary ever.
Look at the orbs – she’s def aiming for a ‘Thanos’ look, who is hairless.
Besides, Evil Bearded Spock was the nicest person in the Dark Mirror universe (at least in the Original Series – dunno that much about future series revisiting it).
The Evil Spock was NOT a nice person, though. Being even-tempered & civil during discourse is just Spock being Spock…Underneath that dispassionate Vulcan demeanor was a ruthless (one could say cold-blodded) killer.
In the episode “Journey to Babel,” Spock’s father Sarek was under suspicion of murdering the Tellerite Ambassador. The way Spock described Vulcan demeanor left no doubt that, if given sufficient reason to kill, his father would not hesitate to do so, logically & efficiently. It would not take a leap in logic to presume that Spock himself would be any different.
I have little doubt that the Mirror Spock, in the setting of the vicious Empire, would be nothing less than cold, caluculating, methodical & efficient in his methods & his setting. I’m just not making the mistake of equating his demeanor as being “nice.”
True, but she seems to be going for brooding ruthless anti-hero, a la Frank Castle, rather than genocidal bond villain. She seems to have pulled a Wolverine with the positioning of the light beams from her orbs..
No, that’s the Infinity Gauntlet (+1)
Cora apparently has cyberarms AND legs. Wonder if she and Dabbler met at the same body-aug clinic.
With Dabbler having a cybernetic arm and eye, and now Cora apparently having a full set of cybernetic limbs, you’d think that at some point they could hook Peggy up with a proper cyberleg.
Tech level and all that. Also she manages.
Exactly. a cyberARM might be more useful than one of our current cutting edge prosthetics… but the only thing a cyberLEG could do is addons, e.g. holdout pistol in a hidden compartment, Rocket booster.
to those who doubt: current top-of-the-line leg prosthetics are such that Paralympian Oscar Pistorius was able to compete against
unmodifiedhumans were not subject to amputations in 2012 and won, and there is serious discussion that the blades gave him an unfair advantage, as in 2016 a long-jumper was denied entry because he also used blade prosthetics. It could house a supersmart AI which vastly enhances Peggy’s situational awareness when scoped in.
I see that as deserving both an upvote and a down vote. So side vote?
Friggin mobile devices. Should be replying to O.B. below.
Adding weapons to her leg? Would that include a TOE missile?
There was actually a gag villain once called “Missile Toe” I think he appeared in a christmas issue of “What the…?” from Marvel Comics.
I remember a old comic where a robot made himself a replacement leg out of a pneumatic drill. Not the most practical option perhaps but it looked cool.
Either an ABC Warrior, or one of those robots who hung around Nemesis the Warlock
Those robots who hung around Nemesis was the ABC Warriors. The bot with a drill peg leg was Blackblood.
Yeah, couldn’t remember properly if it was the same ABC Warriors :(
Blackblood liked to drink the oil of other robots
I’ve often wondered why you don’t see supers showing up in sports. Granted there may not be enough to field all us football teams, and withs some sports it quickly would become a case of how do you keep the fans safe from escape velocity home round, never mind superpowerrpofing the various balls other athletic equipment, goals, stadiums….
“And the Quarterback has thrown the ball to Juggernaut!! The other team is just letting him get the touchdown due not wanting trampled or to find out what happens when an unstoppable force meets and immovable object in the form of Blob, the defensive tight end.”
They tried that in a novel in the late 90’s and then cheated us because Blob decided at the last second to try and dodge…
* Massive laughter *
Oscar: Rudy, Area 51 has a couple of aliens that are barely alive after the star-ships collided high in the atmosphere. Do you think you can do for them what you did for Steve and Jamie? You know, the eye and arms and legs things?
Rudy: I’ll need to examine them first. I should be able to get over to Nellis in a few hours.
If that’s true, the cyber-eye they gave Dabbler is defective. It doesn’t make the nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh sound when it zooms in on things.
She got the upgraded low-noise version.
Steve’s cybernetics didn’t make any noise in the first season. Maybe the noises were “upgrades.”
nobody in the show heard the sounds, that was for the viewer to know he was using his super power levels of bionics… or that is how I always thought of it, cause he would be on a sneaky mission making all that noise and everyone would come running right?
The eye made a “do-do-do-do-do” sound.
I thought that was when he jumped?
Six Million Dollar sound effects
The eye was more of a ‘bib-bibby-bib’
Cora totally caved on the hologram wings! Then again, this may just come right out of Dabbler’s account… if there is such a thing.
No, it will come out of Sydney’s, once they get back to Dirt and Sydney can access her bank account
I doubt human money is much use to Cora.
Depends on if she plans on engaging in some anonymous sex tourism.
In any case, I’m sure Sydney could do something for her she’d consider a fair trade. Maybe a couple of days at Disney World in florida?
There is always chocolate. Interplanetarian space drug, that.
Now she can do fly man costumes like no one else.
Aww, I wanted Angel wings to go with the halo.
Or at least feathered wings
Actually I kinda like the dragonfly wings – halfway between mythical beast (dragon) and delicate metamorphing creature (butterfly).
How do you know the hologram generator doesn’t have multiple settings?
It may be an option… relatively cheap holo unit = one setting, but the more you spend, the more you can tweak, and change forms, etc… the question is, how much did they spend?
To be fair, we have never seen Cora’s limbs before. So yes, I guess they are fully cybernetic.
Wait… Cora has limbs? Lemme go check…
*5 minutes later*
… I’m sorry, what were we talking about?
… What do you mean, ‘Cora has limbs’?
Ok, so now she can see other people’s flashbacks….
Or it was vividly described to her…..
And that was the Pg 13 version.
Granted it was that or the Htperpotn version but most of us are not old enough for that.
The Htperpotn version will be available as a VDSD poster in a couple months (WE CAN ONLY HOPE).
hyperporn, not sure how that came out like that
and here i thought you folks were beginning an idea for a dyslexic Harry Potter fanfic!
If that’s not a blatent callout for DaveB to participate in next year’s Sex Drive participation, I don’t know what is…
0.o
If that’s not a blatant callout for DaveB to participate in that kind of tomfoolery next Febuary, I don’t know what is.
I second that notion.
Doesn’t he normally? o_O
At this rate, Dave’s going to have an artbook full of reader requests by next Valentine’s sex drive… :)
Yeah, it’s almost as if even DaveB’s NSFW work over on Deviant Art still isn’t enough for many of us…
(Which, IMO, isn’t enough)
Or she can imagine other people’s flashbacks. We also already had plenty of scenes without Sydney.
It’s no less strange than Cora being aware of “pages”.
We’ve seen numerous instances of people in the sub-page making meta comments. I take for granted that anything below the blocking is non-canon, like author commentary in the characters’ voices, or when the actors in a movie get to make a commentary track for the bonus features.
The post-panel cartoons are not always in-universe.
Well, this did start as its own flashback narrated by Sidney, after all, so perhaps that’s why she knows.
She has one Orb too many for the Infinity Gauntlet.
…Unless she found some mythical, unheard-of Seventh Stone
Sydney wields the INFINITY +1 Gauntlet.
and +! for you!
^_^
“To infinity…And beyond!”
* Literally Laughing out loud *
^_^
She’s just so mentally erratic she needed a second mind gem.
Right after the “Mind” stone, Sydney has the “Mind your own Business” stone.
It is called the ego gem. Some universes also had some more. But 616 has 7 , you just don’t want to use the 7th. By its self it does nothing but with the others they merge back into the being they came from.
I looked at several wiki pages and they all say the same thing. The Ego gem was from the Ultraverse. The Ultraverse is apparently 93060, not 616.
Though that brings up the rather large inconsistency of each universe’s gems only working in the universe they’re from. In any other universe they were just pretty rocks. So a gem from the Ultraverse shouldn’t work with 616 gems. Then again, Marvel continuity is a joke anyways, so…
Wasn’t the Ultraverse a different company? Or is this simply a case of Marvel ‘acquiring’ the brand after buying out the company? Like how DC ended up with Shazam (the other Captain Marvel) and his family
Malibu Comics, originally. Marvel is sometimes alleged to have acquired them for their colouring system rather than for their characters…
True, they did have several characters that weren’t Wolverine knockoffs. That was during the reign of the antiheroes. Each one bloodier than the one before.
Dark Age of comics is the official term.
It was a good time for indie comics though, as Marvel was having financial issues and DC was at the time being held down by a strict censorship. So although Marvel tried to compete with scantly clad babes, alternate universes of poket jackets and mullet psychos, other companies were pulling out with things like Purgatori, Vampirella, Witchblade, Spwan, and this was the era where Aliens vs Predator comics were the most prevalent; and the biggest names in marvel were X-men, Venom, and the Punisher.
Fairly sure Vampi has been around since the 50’s
Have a few of the indie-comics from that time, use to have the X-O Manowar ring (until accidentally left it on a video game, took two steps and some bitch stole it)
Really?
Eh, either way, around or just invented the 90’s was when the indie comics got to shine as the two bigger companies were floundering on one end and holding themselves back on the other. Yeah the “edgy” thing in the 90’s was to do the opposite of what people thought a “kids medium” like comics should do.
In fact it was the only niche for it really, the censors for movies and cartoons were being even stricter than the 80’s…possibly as a reaction to the “mid-western moms” groups complaining about violence, drugs, and sex in cartoons and movies that drew in children from the 80’s.
that much like much earlier decades comics got to fill that *taboo* niche.
The wiki is a tad off then,
not sure if the story is canon NOW, but back then it was a cross-over event between the Avengers and Ultra Force, the universes met and the seven gems united to create Nemesis (a bland generic name).
But that said aside from which universe it is canon too, Sydney is a geek, so she may be aware of the different continuities and the extra gems from them. Heck the chib cartoon had an extra McGuffin (Infinity Sword),
and in one universe Thanos was defeated because a “death gem” existed that countered the others and just killed the one using it.
The Ultraverse is in Santa Paula, CA?
Nah, the Ego Gem cheats around that by being from 616, and having gotten lost in the Ultraverse. Becasue Marvel is weird like that.
Oh no! Sydney has found the PLOT stone!!!
Someone totally called it that Cora is just a torso :(
She may just turn out to be a little runt with limb enhancers. If Dabbler can be an X-rated Pinkie Pie, why can’t Cora be an X-rated Peridot?
Great, now I got this image stuck in my head of Cora calling Dabbler a clod upon delivering Sydney back to them.
Thank you. Heck, I said it 3 times on that page just to be sure. :)
But I wasn’t just guessing. ;)
Fixed link. Don’t know how that happened.
It broke again? If this doesn’t work it’s page 674.
You need to add “https://” at the beginning to get the hyperlink to go out of this page instead of looking for a subpage of this page.
I know, I’m almost positive it was not like that when I pasted it in. I took the “permalink to comment” from a comment on that page and replaced the number with my post number, which worked before.
The first two posts took a few minutes to show up while the third, working one did not. Odd.
Test link: grrlpowercomic.com/archives/2991/comment-page-1#comment-708020
There, I used the href without =”” so the link should be what it shows, but it screwed up the link anyway. Definitely something wrong with the system.
Your third link worked fine, nothing wrong with the system :P
The third link was a link to the top of the thread, which has a “#” link. Replacing the number there with my post number works when putting it in the address bar, but the comment system alters the link sometimes as seen above. My most recent link should link to what the text says, but it doesn’t. It links to this page instead.
Testing both of them to see if it messes with them independently:
Top of thread link:
a href https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/2991/comment-page-1#comment-707751 /a

The third one was a link to the top of the thread. Whenever I try to replace the number with the number in my post, which works when pasted in the address bar, the system alters the link.
Look at the most recent one, it’s supposed to link to the url shown but it ends up linking to this page instead.
Like Niauropsaka said: you have to use the entire URL, including the “https://” which is why your third link (the one you thought was broke again) worked
Even if it went to the top of the thread-tree, that’s still better than being at the top of the wrong page of comments (ie going to the first page when the comment was on the third)
And the reason it went to the top, was because you used the first comment’s # rather than your own
Wow! That did work :D
Oops. Misread the part about the subpage, I read that as Niauropsaka saying I was the one looking for the subpage. Didn’t expect leaving http out to be that much of a problem. Thanks.
an X rated pinky pie…….I’m afraid….very afraid….
Just… don’t google for that.
How about an X-Rayed Pinkie Pie?
I’m kind of disappointed here. Thought her heart was bigger.. Maybe on the inside it is.
It has to be. If Pinkies physical heart were the size of her metaphysical one, it would be unable to fit in her body.
That might not be her real heart, as it apears to be outside of her rib cage.
that’s not her heart that’s a balloon, there is also a party hat and a noise maker in there also.
For a while you couldn’t google them period without both a strict parental lock and not letting the kids look at the screen regardless because those don’t work very well; as people were making insane amounts of porn of them to the point they leaked out of the search.
My niece wanted a “Rainbow Dash” cake and cupcakes for her birthday, much to the horror of her grandmother trying to google search those terms…these “fans” are the reason so many people look down on anyone who talks about cartoon shows as an adult.
Well, she DOES have hooves…
Seen it.
Anthro, pony, and Equestria Girl versions. Pinkamena Pie gore versions. Crossgender Alternate Universe hookup. Stories. Animations. You name it, someone’s Rule 34’d it.
And somewhere, out there, someone is having a fap to it, RIGHT NOW.
And now we might get a Pony Dabbler, A humanoid Pinkie dressed as Dabbler, AND them in x-rated situations.
…. Are there any “My little Grrlpower” ponifications yet?
Yes, yes there are.
there are ponies of everything, its like an internet rule now. there are pony versions of Disney’s Gargoyles for crying out loud,
https://www.deviantart.com/swirlypenhp/art/Sydney-Scoville-Jr-517233276
Original MLP is best MLP, back when they more closely resembled (talking) ponies, heck, even the original Spike the Dragon is better than the FiM horse-apples!!!
Aside from the pilot I never cared much for the original My Little Pony…although the reason was their voices…they were just too all high pitched, it was like nails on a chalkboard to me.
What? Sydney isn’t doing the Superman-pose?
Wait, Reeves did fly with both hands in front, didn’t he? o_O
Sorry, I’m of the generation that needs to ask.
Which Reeves? George or Christopher?
Don’t apologize, can remember George as well
Meant the iconic Christopher (don’t remember seeing George actually flying, usually he just jumped out a window)
Can’t answer for George Reeves, but Christopher Reeve (no s) did both – one arm is the more iconic pose, and, as I recall, the one he used for most routine flight; two arms get used while changing arms, and while putting forth special effort.
Okay, so which super (hero or villain) typically flew with both arms out?
George Reeves was often shown flying, but it was almost always a cutaway to stock footage they had shot. He also was shown with two outstretched arms.
Technology limitations and budget…
Budget limits lead to some creative compromises, which are sometimes very convincing (until the tech improves anyways), and sometimes painfully obvious even at the time.
That was done on purpose.
I’m not sure how Sydney is enjoying her wings when she can’t see them.
She should be holding the teleprescence orb also.
Would that allow her to see herself?
(But….she still couldn’t see her wings!
They’re not real! )
Ok…
Holo Sydney would see Real Sydney without illusionary wings.
Real Sydney would see Holo Sydney WITH illusionary wings.
Not sure how the Orb lets her see with two sets of eyes.
Pretty sure Holo-Sydney can see everything that a normal person could. Only real Sydney has truesight.
Wait…
What’s the point of remote viewing unless Holo Halo ALSO has truesight?
Am I not understanding that those are different modes…not combined?
Potential for future upgrades!
She already did the experiment to verify that:
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/660
She is enjoying them like a kid enjoying their princess/dinosaur/bear costume – pretending to be one.
I’m not really sure why the comm orb would make her invisible to herself, but it would be better to not do that – to some degree. Like … to know when someone sneaks up on her or something – then it would be good to give her only 50% opacity or something….
And the holo halo has no way to use any other benefits from the comm orb…. so she should be seeing the wings.
No, she wouldn’t be invisible, just the wings
Why would the wings be invisible?
Because they are an illusion?
Hologram is not the same thing as illusion.
Normally I would agree, illusions are psionic, its one thing to “be immune to projected hallucinations”, or magical visual distortions.
Its another to see through light shields and such. However she can also see through the masks aliens use on Earth. While the “magical creatures” are using the veil sigil to psionically influence the perceptions of humans; Dabbler mentioned disguise devices aliens can use while on Earth.
Which could be simply hard light suits, masking their appearance, and possibly texture *see lizard guy* as one feel of a scaly arm and you’d know something wasn’t right there.
So in all probability the Orb was designed to specific perameters. We’ve already seen some aspects being oddly specific between magic and tech. Like Tech can see the orbs just like biology can, but a deeper scan by tech or magic reveals “nothingness”; meanwhile the skill tree can be seen my the eye, Krona could “scan” the skill tree, but the cameras couldn’t see it.
No real common elements to excuse these, so likely the result of programmed selectiveness for reasons only their designers would know (maybe some functions of them require specific interactivity) as well as being used against specific sorts of opponents.
Or perhaps the orbs are magic, and truesight cares nothing for whether a disguise is generated by magic or tech.
I don’t think “’cause magic” applies in this series, not with the likes of Dabbler around establishing that even magic is having a hard time scanning them.
Unless DaveB pulls a “its magic items from a different universe” so are bypassing local magical rules and thus outside of anything the locals with magic or tech that knows magic exists has dealt with and can explain or deal with properly.
> Would that allow her to see herself?
That is what I was referring to with “Why would the orb make her invisible to herself”.
Ya know, I woulda bet money this page would have been Sydney walking into base with some ludicrous number of hologram toys as gifts for everyone since Dave seemed to be in a bit of a hurry to get Sydney home (that missing “can I film your eating” thing, which I personally think needs actual drawing). Apparently I am wrong.
Maybe she has tons of small capsules that need to be activated for the hologram to come out?
There has to be SOME kind of power source, and it’s small enough for us not to see in that image, so fits in a pocket maybe.
Right here in the real world, a company has developed a method of trapping and permanently sequestering radioactive material inside of an artificially grown diamond. Pound for pound, they’re about half as powerful as our most efficient batteries (literally, it would take 2 pounds of radioisolated battery to produce the same energy as 1 pound of regular battery), but contrary to what you might think, once encased in the diamond materail, they are not radioactive in the sense of causing damage to living tissues. And unlike our lighter-weight batteries, the shelflife of a radiodiamond battery is measured in thousands and thousands and thousands of years…not hours or days.
Which means no sensible company would sell versions of them that generate a good amount of electricity.
Are Radioactive ‘Diamond Batteries’ a Real Thing?
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/radioactive-diamond-batteries-real-thing/ “Mixed.”
Not discussed in the article is “What happens to the Carbon-14 when it beta-decays?” Answer: It becomes a stable isotope of Nitrogen 14. But now you have a gas in your diamond matrix, disrupting the composition of your “battery.” No mention anywhere of the chemical or electrical effects of Nitrogen in the carbon matrix.
Zapp, is that you? Shouldn’t have expected anyone else really…
“Kiff, I have made it with several women. Inform the men.”
Kiff: Sir; those women were the men, don’t you remember we were fired on by a gender exchange beam by the Ranmanians while you were…*sigh*….off ship for some personal R and R?
Nearly everything Zap has ever said seems to have exasperbated the problem at hand. (Everyone else’s exasperation is exacerbated by it.)
(Continuing the Futurama tradition of creating new, yet surprisingly accurate, portmanteaus. Like scaroused.)
I was honestly expecting far more holo accessories.
To be fair, it does look like she got the top-of-the-range model: she may have fixated on wings and got the best possible, rather than going for lesser versions of many things.
They are probably programmable or have multiple settings.
I just noticed something. In panel 1, Cora is on the left side of the panel, while in panel 2 she’s on the right side. The background buildings are exactly the same in both panels, so our reference frame hasn’t moved. Which means…she walked backwards?
I was focused more on the fact that there are so many buildings – Fracture appears to be much, much larger than I had been thinking. It looked like an outpost geared towards selling to travelers, but with that many skyscrapers it has to have a significant permanent population.
the fracture is a Nexis/central hub of trade not an out post.
it would be a galactic version of new York or hon Kong were everyone comes together to trade with everyone else. and like all centers of trade there’s a lot of things going on and so a lot of people want to live there.
It all just continues to make her being within a block or two of Deus and Vale at one point even crazier a coincidence.
I had thought at first she had been directed to the “visitor area”, but we found out she just dropped down.
Guess she chose a dense looking area with smoke rising from some buildings with vaguely Earth like structures.
In all the big buildings put me in mind of some sci-fi games like Phantasy Star Online where you are in this tiny little hub, but the background is made to look like there is a massive sprawling city beyond it.
Maybe this is the suburbs, and all the houses look alike?
It is called reusing the same back ground to save time and effort, the reader is not supposed to notice. :-)
Parallax effects are more likely. Sydney flies right-to-left, and the camera follows her; Cora stays effectively stationary in that half-second or so; the distant buildings are stationary and so far away that the camera move corresponds to a miniscule angle. The line from the camera through Cora’s head to the buildings meets a building further to the right, but because the camera has moved rather than either Cora or the buildings. (My text-art is not up to attempting a diagram!)
I have had “mature” people comment on my immature hobby of RPG’s and computer games. I always ask them what “Mature” hobbies they have. Invariably, drinking is involved. I like to point out that drinking often leads to uncontrolled immature behavior. The subject tends not to come up after that.
Ha ha ha, nice.
Even more so, I have learned so much as I research various things that impact my RPG-ing. In college, I did more studying for things like physics, sailing ships, armor, clothing, daily needs, etc., for our AD&D campaign than I did for regular classes. When I wargame, I have a friend who is very knowledgeable in history and geography. He tends to lecture, and very well I might add, and I continue to learn. Hard to learn when one is getting their buzz on. Just sayin’.
Why do so many folks feel Sydney is immature to be having those orbs which float about her head!?
Hope Maxima approves of those wings…
It’s not having her balls floating around her head that is making people believe she is immature, it is her actions and attitude (most of the time), exhibit 69: panels one and two (not to forget last panel of the previous page)
I find Sydney’s habit of floating upside down while having these conversations quite endearing.
Upside Down Sydney’s hair defies the laws of gravity. If the Flight Orb negates gravity, if that is how it works in part, it may have more uses than just flight. Might eventually extend to all forms of gravity manipulation.
Thinking of all the ways Gravity Negation/Manipulation/Control is used as a superpower in other comics.
Yeah, it’s done that from the start. Sydneys so used to it that it surprised her when Maxima didn’t have the same effect, her hair (and other things) dangling when she stood on the ceiling
Her…hair…Tass.
Maxima’s..hair. Yass…
It doesn’t negate gravity, just provides a localized gravity focused on Sydney: to her, she is always the same way up, it is everything else that is upside down (or sideways), it’s why she never feels the affect of vertigo (until she let’s go)
That guy has an abnormally long upper body.
It does look a bit odd, but closer inspection suggests he is wearing a flesh-coloured thong and there may be some inaccurate colouring above Cora’s forearm: I think some of that is supposed to be the couch.
Her cyberleg is also super long over and before his shoulder. I suspect some fudging was used all over this piece to cut down on the limited time constraints. As Dave said, his original plan was a ‘safe-for-work orgy’ but he ran out of time and fudged with confetti and balloons.
Her tibia is ridiculously long in the last panel more than her ridiculously long femur, seriously she would be over 8 feet tall with legs like that.
He might not be human, considering who else is in the room.
It’s a flashback memory. Some things may be more exaggerated that reality. Just roll with it.
He is the famous space adventurer, Johnny Longtorso.
-each body part sold separately
*oh for the days when that was a legitimate joke before Marvel Legends series started to actually do that; granted with an actual figure not just selling separate body parts
Yeah you have to give it to Sydney no master how powerful the orb’s make her she’s still just a girl who wants to have fun but it’s not afraid to work hard when it’s time to work hard
Is it just me, or did we just see shots fired at the DCEU?
“Mature” and “90s grimdark” are far from synonyms.
Or, as C S Lewis put it (via Wikiquote):
Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.
“On Three Ways of Writing for Children” (1952) — in Of Other Worlds: Essays and Stories (1967), p. 25
Hey, Marvel’s had that problem too. Along with lesser-known comic publishers.
It occurs to me that at least Cora doesn’t equate “mature” with raunchy.
And most time, that quote is simply shortened to: “When I became a man I put away childish things.”, as though that was the entirety of his message
Personally, in mid 40’s, butt don’t really feel any different in likes and desires as when was in mid teens (physically on the other flipper… )
That part is from one of St. Paul’s Epistles, though. Lewis was making a Biblical reference there.
Oh, didn’t know that, thank you
Pretty sure it was a direct reference to Marvel’s Thanos.
Darn, was totally expecting comically large glasses that spelled ‘FRACTURE’. And nice that, even in her own imagination, her evil shoulder spikes are cardboard and held on with scotch tape.
Wasn’t sure if Sydney was going to go for fun pixie wings, thematic angel wings, or if she’d throw it all for a loop and reverse it with demonic wings.
Also, did she tape a folded piece of paper to her shoulder pad to make ‘menacing pauldrons’?
Wait, wind from high-speed flight swoops hair back, but upside down gravity can’t pull her hair down away from her face?
Makes sense to me. Gravity has consistently been shown to not affect her, but air resistance does.
Not sure if that’s an actual issue or not. We’ve seen that her flight orb does control gravity, yeah. But we’ve seen more than one flight scene where moving through the wind does move her hair.
Because gravity is a force, and specifically what the flight orb is manipulating.
Wind is air, air has mass. Moving through or moving against her this mass will still affect her in flight for the same reason someone could push her along like a buoy or potentially punch her while in flight. Because they are all physical mass. If they couldn’t affect her in flight then there would be no need for the shield orb. *although yes in flight her hair may still move with the shield orb up, we assume relative momentum and inertia as hair is light weight…and mostly dead follicles dangling off your scalp so influence by the orb may treat the same as clothing.
I am unsure about a few things regarding the station. Is the city on the inside of the sphere and the sky is a projection, or are they actually on the surface? If it is the surface, how are they keeping the air from floating away? Does the central chunk of neutron star material provide the 1G gravity for the people to live on the outside?
This is a dyson sphere around a pulsar (if memory serves), pretty sure artificial gravity generation is a basic prerequisite for the dyson sphere to not be sucked into the gravity well and destroyed, let alone be stable enough to do the job. I’d say it’s a safe bet that they have sufficient control over the gravity to fit whatever they need for the people to not float away or get crushed (might not exactly equal earth’s gravity though). The part that cannot be immediately assumed purely from the existence of a dyson sphere is that they possess sufficient terraforming tech to have a stable, breathable atmosphere on the surface of the dyson sphere, but I’d still be willing to wager money that this is a society with extremely powerful terraforming tech. And given the fact that Sydney came down from outside the atmosphere without going through customs, suggests that they are in fact on the surface (although it is entirely possible that there were sufficient openings for her to slip inside even if they weren’t, but I would imagine it would be difficult to maintain an interior atmostphere without airlocks unless they were using terraforming tech, and at that point why not just use the exterior, more surface area to utilize that way anyhow).
It’s actually much more impressive than that. A solid-shell Dyson sphere doesn’t work — if the tidal forces and/or centripetal forces don’t rip it apart then it will wobble in its orbit and end getting sucked into the star and destroyed. The normal thing would be a Dyson swarm — gazillions of satellites that block all the light of the star by way of having tons and tons of layers, despite the fact that each satellite is 1000+ km from the next.
Whoever put the Fracture together has tech that is effectively magic.
Radiation inside a Dyson Sphere around a pulsar would be high enough to kill almost any lifeform higher than a tardigrade, and I wouldn’t give them a very good chance, either. The gravity from the star inside should be enough to retain atmosphere outside the station
Radiated energy gets diluted the farther out you go from the central emission point, so that particular drawback can be ameliorated by putting the inner skin of the sphere waaay out past Earth’s orbit. Plus you’ll have to have energy collectors located in much closer to the sun at the center, probably rotating so that they cast big bands of shadow across the surface, simulating nightfall for a certain span of hours, and alleviating the risk of solar withering on plants & sunburns on animals, etc, etc…
After Sydney gets back to Earth, Max is sitting at her desk in her office; General Faulk is sitting on the other side, when someone starts knocking on her door.
Max: Come in.
Harem: *VORP* Peggy’s A-Team has just been attacked a street gang!
Faulk: Peggy’s A-Team?
Harem: Yeah, a group of some of the less [ hefts her own breasts for emphasis ] well-endowed women in Archon. They were out celebrating Sydney’s return and were on their way back when they were grabbed.
Faulk: And who are these, uh, less well-endowed ladies?
Harem: Um, Peggy, Pixel, Sydney and that lady from the council, Krona.
Max: Did anybody else just realize that the least deadly in that group has 14 confirmed combat kills as a sniper?
Faulk: Oh dear. How many in the gang? Are there any casualties?
Harem: Let’s see. There are 11 guys in the gang and their injuries are all relatively minor. Our people are fine, although Sydney’s a little out of breath.
Max: What about jurisdiction? Do any of them have powers?
Harem: No, none of them are ours, so Krona’s calling the local police to deal with them.
Tactical Squad Sergeant: Why did you turn left back there? This is a longer way back to the station.
Driver: Don’t know. It just felt right. Don’t worry we’ll get there.
Sergeant: It felt more like a left to me. Hmm, looks someone is trying to flag us down.
Driver: Hmm, Jefferson’s right behind us with the prisoner transfer bus. That’s an even longer route for him than ours. Oh, well.
Sergeant: [ Opens window ] Hello young lady. What can I do for you?
Harem: [ Different body than in Max’s office, holding up her Archon ID ] Hi! My names Daphne Deshantis and a bunch of us were jumped by the street gang over there. [ Points down the adjacent alley ] None of them are supers so they’re not our jurisdiction, so do want to come in and take out the trash?
Sydney: [Heard from within the alley] Get back here, you penguin molester. I’m not done with you yet. Where was I? Oh, yeah. You have the right to hire an ambulance-chasing lawyer and to have that walrus kisser with you when you get questioned. Mind you, you might want to get your grease-ball brain examined instead, what with you fucking attacking us, but these rights don’t cover that. If you can’t afford the money-grubbing lawyer, the court could assign one to you anyway, but your sorry ass won’t have to pay for it.
Peggy: Close enough. You understand what she said? Yes? Good!
[ One of the gang members slips out of the alley and runs over the fully decked-out Tactical Unit officer. ] Please arrest me! I confess! My name’s Jim Lewiston and I am 19 years old. I was going to try to rape the girl with the pink hair, but she turned into a huge tiger! I sell marijuana, cocaine and heroin and sometimes we have some fancier designer drugs. Please get me away from them! That girl swears so much that it hurts my eyes.
Harem: [ To the tactical sergeant ] His eyes are actually watering because one of us likes ridiculously hot food and that turns her breath into a weapon. He’ll be fine in a few hours. And Pixel turns into a leopard, not a tiger.
Max: [ Arrives with a sonic boom, in front of the Tactical Unit’s truck ] Sit. Rep. How is everybody?
I award you +3 internets.
That…SOUNDS LIKE A KICK ASS PARTY!
Oh, Peggy’s A-Team kicked ass, all right!
After laughing at this, my interpretation would be something more along the lines of what Hancock did to the two prisoners. I doubt they would like riding Sydney’s train even less than his.
Looks like Ascari wings. Too bad they can’t slice and dice like Sciona’s.
Mayyyyyybe.
If they can be upgraded to hard light operation…
> Dabbler as an X-Rated Pinkie Pie
To be fair, that doesn’t seem wrong, as such.
I just figured that either the projection orb can do oversized illusions, or that one of the two we don’t know the function of can give her Skrull-style stretchy-hands for dramatic moments. Because the Thanos reference is fun.
Meanwhile, I’m with everyone else who thinks that the rescuer is silly for being worried about Sydney’s childishness. She’s seen Sydney for minutes on end now, and the worst she’s done with phenomenal cosmic power is be a little indecorous. And she KNOWS there’s been no major property damage or other incidents on the station, despite Sydney being there for an unknown time prior to her finding the girl.
Sydney, though, needs to remember that “ability to kick ass” is not what her rescuer is worried she might lack; it’s ability to restrain herself from using that ass-kicking prowess.
I think it’s not so much Sydney’s ‘childishness’ that’s a problem. More her lack of impulse control and her agressiveness. We’ve seen her attack a bankrobber who had a gun pointed at her – if that had been a real robbery and Maxima hadn’t been there, she could have ended up dead. She doesn’t t hink before she acts, which is not much of a problem for an average human, but for someone wielding Nth tech, it’s worrying. Also, she already send one guy to the hospital with breaks and dislocations all along his right side.
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/1608
My point is, she is getting more powerful all the time, and if this were a darker comic, I would expect we would soon see her cause an unintentional disaster – perhaps by flying across the US at Mach 16 without realizing how destructive that is until it’s too late. She only has to forget once to cause serious damage with the power she now possesses. I’m sure she’ll learn, but self control doesn’t come natural to her and she’s still really new to her powers, she hasn been using them openly for just over a week now. (and she better learn damn quickly, because if she keeps levelling up at this rate, with 5 points a week, she’ll fill up her tech tree in under six months, and I don’t even want to hink how powerful that will make her. Given that she took out that whole fleet of drones plus two mega-kaiju without them ever being able to touch her when she had less than a third of the tech tree filled out, she’ll become less the Queen of Salt and more like ‘Death, the Destroyer of Worlds’.
For that matter, I wonder what Maxima will say when she begins to realize Sydney’s true potential after debriefing her. Teaching her self-control may become even more important now!
I believe either she or DaveB made a comment that Sydney is now aware that it was safer to test her abilities on the already mostly destroyed Alari homeworld…so I believe she is aware that it’s not safe to fly Mach 16 on Earth.
I’m intruiged that her mental image of Evil Sydney’s design incorporates the 80s school picture laser background.
I may be a bit late tot he party, but i have to say… that last panel is a bit of a mess.
BODY PARTS EVERYWHERE!!!
Also, he seems to be a long loooong man. i have to assume he is an alien, cause … yeah. he is long.
ALSO also, Cora’s leg seems to be… detached…
The green fairy thing… is that a kneecap RIGHT on top of Cora’s speachbubble?
Unles her leg is 3 part, instead of two part, there is no way it connects, considering her corrent pose.
Dabbler seems a bit thin… but then again, succubus shapeshifting magic.
That’s a bottle she’s holding, not part of her leg. And put me down as “yes” on the large format uncensored last panel, particularly for the pixie in the top left to lose her top and get out from behind Cora’s narrator superimposition.
That’s not a fairy, it’s an Uryuom from the webcomic El Goonish Shive
Too bad the orbs are in the wrong positions in ThanoSydney. Going clockwise from the top left:
Soul Stone Position (Soul Stone is Orange): Air Ball (Green) – Should be in the Time Stone Slot.
Reality Stone Position (Stone is Red): Lightbee orb (Yellow) – Should be in the Mind Stone Slot.
Space Stone Position (Stone is Blue): Flight Orb (Blue) – This one is right.
Power Stone Position (Stone is Purple): Tentacle Orb (Purple) – This one too.
No Stone Here: Unknown Orb (Thumb knuckle) Orange – Should be in the Soul Stone Slot.
Time Stone Position (Stone is Green): PPO (red) – Should be in the Reality Stone Slot
Mind Stone Slot (Stone is yellow) Shield Orb (purple) This could be in the no stone slot, or swapped with the Tentacle orb in the Power Stone Slot.
To be fair though the color of the stones is different from some of the corresponding gems (I think), but regardless the exact color assignment was inconsistent for years in the comics before they nailed it down.
Surprised NO ONE has mentioned that Sydney is doing the NYAN CAT MEME for fun. Only she gets it, but that doesn’t matter, she’s having fun.
I’m pretty sure she’s making airplane sounds there, not doing a cat meme. Unless you know a flying cat?
Nyan Cat is a flying cat but I don’t know if there’s a version with sound.
Isn’t it a flying toaster cat that poops rainbows? o_O
Good lord, you don’t remember the original meme, do you? It had an incredibly annoying tune, loud & fast, attached to it.
Here you go, enjoy :P
Can we get that last panel full-sized as a vote incentive?
Uncensored full size, without narrator Cora blocking the left side.
Dabbler looks completely gleeful in the flashback, that grin is just pure happiness. Not that she’d necessarily agree with the “pure” part…
I bet I’m not the only one who heard Andrew W.K.’s “Party Party Party” as the soundtrack for that scene.
> it’s not that kind of a comic.
:(
:’-(
He he he.
Nice to see Cora has joined the 4th wall demolition squad.
Nobody is going to say anything about Dabbler still having all her original arms?
Dabbler’s cybernetic arm looks just like her other arms.
For example: https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/2967
None of Dabbler’s arms has ever looked cybernetic in any of the comics so far. The only reason we know one of them isn’t Original Hardware (TM) is because she’s mentioned it. I would say that Cora just didn’t spring for the Original Fleshtone Covering (Also TM) is because she cares less about it. :)
