Grrl Power #686 – Inter(stellar)net famous
“Nursing Sacks” is probably the least flattering thing to call breasts, but they would be pretty weird to an alien species that came from a planet where nothing evolved mammary glands or fed its offspring from its own body.
Happy Thanksgiving to those of you who are into that sort of thing. For everyone else, happy Have a Comic as Usual Day.
The dish Sydney is eating isn’t actually anything beyond the physical capability of human digestion, but you can imagine the reaction of 95% of humans that came by your stall and bit into something hovering around a million scoville. Maybe a million and a half. You know how it is. Every chef does it a bit different, sometimes you get unlucky and you catch the kitchen just after they’ve given everything the mandatory monthly cleaning, and you don’t get any of that deep, baked in flavor.
Suffice to say, while there are some sapient species that can functionally ignore the effects of capsaicin, most species do feel it to either a lesser or greater degree than humans, and this dish is hot enough that anyone who can feel the effects, does.
BTW, some of the crowd in panel 1 are cameos, some aren’t, so don’t kill yourself trying to identify everyone.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. $1 and up, but feel free to contribute as much as you like.
Imagine if the screwship shows up and she makes her the balls each subtly flew towards her hands though the shield ball and the PPO and she puts both are hands-down to her side and start shouting “Ka…me…ha…me…HAAA!!!!! And then cut sleeves with the BPO at the screws ship come on all units out there you were thinking it !
Well, to be fair this rarely comes up in any books. Everyone in space seems to have some kind of generic food replicator, that gives people a generic meal that they happily gobble up and it takes like three sentences.
Unless specifically pointed out – everyone would just brush it off. It’s the same with going to the bathroom. Like we know that they oughta but they don’t on pages. Not even in the offhand comment about “The size of that log”.
The only person that made a big deal out of it was Deadpool in his Cable&Deadpool run. And that was a comic book.
Then again – maybe the reason why food isn’t mentioned is not due to author’s incompetence or laziness but rather to avoid Empathy effect. When reading about food makes you hungry. Like reading Toriko, or watching Kitchen wars or something.
The Redwall series by Brian Jacques.
I swear everytime I go back to that series, I get back into cooking.
Robert Jordan’s books always made me hungry, he was always far to descriptive of the food.
if you never noticed it go back and read it all again and keep track of how often the characters are eating or drinking something
I wonder if this is subtly hinting that Sydney’s not entirely human.
Nah, it just means ‘Humans are Awesome.’
(see TV Tropes for more on that)
Not necessarily, if it were “Humans are Awesome” being applied, Sydney’s feasting on the hot stuff would be largely ‘business as usual’, or ‘that’s what you’d expect of a human’. Instead, it appears that Sydney is displaying behavior or tolerances outside of expectations, which is why she’s got the crowd gaping at her culinary adventures.
Maybe having a ridiculous tolerance for spicy food is Sydney’s super power :P
There was a game called “The Superhero League of Hoboken” and in it was a superhero named “The Iron Tummy”. His only superpower was that he could eat spicy things without distress.
So that’s what Dues is looking for, a Krull spin blade.
He already has it
If anything it’s a burnable object like a fuel source.
Is it me, or does one of the aliens in Panel 1 (third from the right) actually look like a Slayer from Krull?
It is not just you.
I guess where ever this place is located must have had Star wars running in the theaters at one point.
Alien girl leaning over Sydney’s shoulder rocking a Slave Leia outfit from return of the jedi.
Jabba’s first slave girl was abducted from the same planet as that goat-eyed beauty. Jabba has insisted on thst outfit for his slave girls ever since.
omg i didn’t even notice her pupils before you pointed them out
Sort of surprised that alien restaurants use chopsticks as the utensil of choice.
Maybe like many restaurants there were many utensils types available, and Sydney just grabbed the chopstick looking ones.
In the Gil Gerard Buck Rogers, one episode showed an electric fork
that picked up food as if by magnetism.
Also….despite atempting not to look uncivilized, the Red Dwarf crew were
unable to use alien eating utensils during an important meeting.
Sydney is using chopsticks. That does not guarantee that they were restaurant provided. She may have found the ones offered too weird. The beauty of chopsticks is that they are easy to improvise. Those may be pens, aboriginal wands or sonic screwdrivers.
Or alien chopsticks. The sheer simplicity of their design would make it likely that at least one race may have developed them too. So a cosmopolitan eatery might have them on offer, with Sydney opting for the familiar, rather than the strange.
Finally the alien talking about humans confirms that they are a familiar sight. So it is entirely possible that those are Chinese chopsticks!
Actually depending on who made the first aid kit it may have something you can use as chopsticks
Putting aboriginal wands and/or sonic screwdrivers into your mouth seems like a really, really bad idea.
The simple design comes in handy, as it is usable by multiple species – a single chopstick could be used for poking / stirring. A set of three could be used by a race with 6 fingers – just like one of those arcade claw machines.
They needn’t be provided by the restaurant; I would not be at all surprised if Sydney keeps a set or several in her utility gear. At the end of the day, they’re lightweight rods of a convenient length and diameter. The list of potential applications is as long as one’s imagination, especially if carrying several sets in different materials: eating implements, tweezers, poking sticks (utility or offensive), partial armour, emergency equipment repairs, medical splints…
(Pinkie Pie Voice) Wait a second!!!
Sydney is a LEFTY???
But…but…She was shooting right handed. Flying right handed.
She chopsticks left handed?
i’m a southpaw and i use a mouse righthanded
I’m a righty and shoot left-handed due to cross-eye dominance. It’s made me a lot more sympathetic to southpaws in having to find/buy rarer or custom equipment.
She was eating right handed back at the King of Siam. Sydney may just be one of those ambidextrous eaters.
I’m a lefty myself, and I prefer to eat left handed. However, when needs must I can eat right handed. When eating in a large group I always try to get a seat at the far left end of my side of the table. That way my left elbow doesn’t smack into everybody else. Otherwise I end up eating “wrong handed” so I don’t elbow my neighbor.
Left handers are more likely to be ambidextrous. Or maybe dave just messed up and he doesn’t care.
If you have one hand, everything you do is ambidextrous…
And you get to do everything single-handed…
…. the one-armed bandit
It is nice to see that one of the slayers survived the death of the beast, and that M’ress is still in Starfleet.
Is that a booger dangling from Sydney’s right nostril?
Caused by what she is eating (just because she can tolerate it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t still affect her body)
Spicy food is a great way to clear out clogged sinuses. One of my favorite cold remedies is an egg roll covered in hot Chinese mustard. It all just drains right out.
“(…S)ome of the crowd in panel 1 are cameos, some aren’t, so don’t kill yourself trying to identify everyone.”
Well, and I’m sure that it’s been pointed out already, I do see Lt. M’Ress from “Star Trek: The Animated Series”.
My bet is that is actually a felinoid alien Cosplaying as M’Ress. And it’s a pretty good costume too.
Clearly there are alien Trekkies!
I am actually guilty of something like this.
a Kuhrai/Panther Woman hybrid undercover on the fantasy style world of Aesperia dressed up in a stereotypical pirate costume to try and pass for a local on what they perceived at the time to be an agrarian level civilization.
Actually he already showed one Federation Constitution layout hull flying into one of the portals.
She’s even got the ST:TAS uniform correct, with the sigil tucked under the collar for some weird reason.
I see that red alien in the back right corner…….I GET THAT REFERENCE.
Isn’t that one of Dabblers old foes standing behind Sydney? The one who said his return would be heralded by a “mighty burning”. Does the Mighty Halo eating atomic spicy foods qualify?
If you have an awed crowd stopping to watch, chances are good someone will throw money at you. Her meal bill should be paid.
Hm, Cora’s face looks so familiar. I don’t think this is a coincidence.
I wonder if Daphne picked up any new skills during her interplanetary fugue.
OMG!!!
in the 1st panel in the center, that guy whit the big “hat” is ZEOTAM from Iria Zeoram, the anime!
Sorry, damn keyboard, i mean ZEIRAM from IRIA ZEIRAM
Been readin this comic for years and only now am I noticing the Incase cameo way in the back there.
I just Noticed it myself. Very pleased to see them again.
