Grrl Power #663 – Executive class
I wasn’t sure what to have Vale watching there on the screen for a while, I went back and forth between something metal like the club scene from Blade 2 or Hellraiser, but that felt a little predictable. Of course, having her watching a cutesy cartoon is nearly as predictable as it’s a straight reversal of the trope. Maybe I should have had her watching something super brain dead like The Bachelorette or a daytime soap, but then a lot of you would have been all “anyone know what she’s watching?”
If you’ve never heard of a solar updraft tower, they’re a pretty cool ideal. I have a wikipedia link there for you, but the short version is, build a hollow tower, the taller the better, like 500-1000 meters, and since the upper atmosphere is always cooler than the lower atmosphere, even at night, wind travels up the tower, since heat rises. Put some wind turbines in there, and you have constant power. To make it more efficient, put a huge greenhouse at the base to really collect the hot air, and we’re talking about something in the order of 1/10th of the Hoover Dam’s output.
You can even use some of the greenhouse space as an actual greenhouse, of course, you’d have to shield most of the plants from the constant wind, so you lose efficiency there.
The point is, I wonder what Deus is planning on doing with the Skybreaker and a ton of power?
Edit: Wow, I had no idea Teen Titans Go was so reviled. Maybe I’ll swap the screen out with something else. On the other hand, she is a bad guy(?).
The vote incentive is updated! I have another mock cover I painted, but I’ll give you guys a break from that stuff and put up a portrait of Max. Mostly just painting practice. I think it turned out pretty good, but it’s still not… there. But it’s an improvement, and that’s the important part. For some reason I like drawing Max wearing t-shirts she would probably never actually wear. Maybe on laundry day, but never around the base or the press.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. $1 and up, but feel free to contribute as much as you like.
That yawn and stretch suggests that her ‘shell’ is more than just a simple shell.
Ditto on that comment. Every time she does something new, the same thought of “What the hell *is* she?!?” pops right back into my noggin.
She manages to look cute while yawning – not many people (besides infants and toddlers) can do that. That’s a plus in my book. :)
My wife manages it.
Every.
Time.
:)
She could have been watching “Happy Tree Friends” and done a double subversion.
Honestly Go gets a lot more flak than it deserves. It’s not to my taste, nor do I think that it’s particularly good, but I also find that a lot of the hatred towards it comes from feelings of the original Teen Titans cartoon being mocked, or having ‘died for this’, neither of which are the most accurate or rational reasons to hate something.
That said, again, I don’t particularly like it, but there’s something amusing about a villainous cosmic entity on the same level as supers watching a dumbed down superhero cartoon for small children. It has a certain… je ne sais quoi.
My experience with Go begins and ends with this one time when I had to share a hotel room while at a convention. My roommate insisted on watching it, or at least on having it on the TV while he looked at his phone.
It was torment. It was more than merely ‘not good,’ it was actively aggressively bad. The episode centered on the question of whether Robin was a Leprechaun (it turned out the answer was yes). Perhaps that was a particularly bad episode, but I’ll never know. You couldn’t pay me to watch it.
I believe that was an average episode. Superheroes minus a moral center are bullies. A team of superheroes minus intelligence, moral center and coherent raison d’être comes across as a thuggish Breakfast Club self-imposing their own detention.
The economics of putting up 5 individuals without support staff in a multi-story T-shaped tower strongly argue that their world is post-scarcity yet nearly all villain attacks are economic crimes.
DO NOT try to make sense of TTG. Your brain will surely rot.
Go suffers from the fact that it’s a “Sequel” to a much better animated, plotted, and much more adult series.
It’s like if the Dark Knight batman movie was followed up by something like the 1960s Batman TV series. It’s okay to get more serious from a light campy show, but the other way around just feels wrong.
Not a ‘sequel’, a ‘reboot’
Isn’t this still in 2011? That show didn’t air until 2013. It could have been that she was watching Young Justice or something and the “New Teen Titans” shorts came on, but that’s stylistically different.
I’m starting to think Vale liked Sydney, but knew she couldn’t make friends with her since Sydney had already become involved with Archon.
Also she’s goddamn adorable here. :)
For the same reason he put Obama as the president when she interrupted Maxima’s meeting.
But… that’s consistent with it being 2011?
She’s watching Teen Titans Go … not Teen Titans…. Irredeemably Evil Status CONFIRMED.
(And yes I’m also one of those “I can’t wait for the next season of Firefly! ….. *innocent bystander takes in breath to point out facts* youshutyourmouthINEEDTHIS!!!” people.)
knowing deus he probably has the entirety of firefly (with a few unreleased seasons and scripts for the entire thing) and it being canceled was because he doesn’t want to share the entire thing
Wow. That goes so far beyond evil…
So what does it take to forge a will in the grrl power universe?
I’m asking for a friend.
…. Such Evil cannot be allowed to Exist!!
… also I should be the only one with ALL the Firefly unreleased seasons!!!!!!!
Leave the TTG frame. The show is good, some people are just babies about it.
I suppose the timeline thing could matter, but don’t change it because some people are pissy.
The deep irony is that EVERY SINGLE thing they say they hate about TTG is pretty much the EXACT SAME things the comics fans said about Teen Titans! (and it’s viewers) when IT came out.
So congrats, y’all are official grumpy old farts.
I would disagree. To me at least and maybe the show has gotten better but a lot of the show that I have seen is either unfunny and childish jokes (waffles) or the else insulting the critics of the show (finally a lesson, return of Slade) or else a tasteless parody of a heart wanting original episode (the one where cyborg and Beast Boy go back in time.) None of these issues I can say about the original.
Waffles is amazing absurdist humor. They play with concepts and have stunningly tight writing. And it’s hard to attack them for mocking the critiques and leave out that they’ve acknowledged their issues plenty of times.
And yeah, the original had TONS of unfunny, childish humor. They also did parodies of the comics which were damn insulting to the original comic’s fans. That’s the point, the comic fans said all this about y’all and it was BS when they did it too.
Teen Titans Go? Well I knew it was bad but bad enough to make an eldritch abomination yawn?Deus seriously needs to make sure Vale doesnt watch more of this or shell start considering that the human race needs to be purged before it infects other places with this show.
Didn’t they do an episode with Weird Al voicing Darkseid?
Yes, they did. Possibly the most popular moment yet.
Indeed they did, as part of a much-hyped two-parter where they broke into the Justice League headquarters, stole food, costumes and vehicles (most of which were destroyed) and required multiple temporal resets to restore heroes who died during their intervention.
They ran into many of the same heroes during the opening fight of the TTG movie, where no suggestion that they were respected as heroes was made.
I’m frequently surprised by how many characters I’ve become invested in with this comic. Vale is once again on the list, simply on account of the stoic unexpectedly making a joke and then going, deadpan, “I’m very funny.” I now like her as much as Alberich, from the Valdemar series.
“Is that (Alberich the Grim) what the Trainees call you?” Talamir asked with interest.
“Oh, that they call me, and ‘Great Stone-Face,’ or ‘Herald Stone-Heart.’ They take me, perhaps, for granite.”
Talamir and Selenay both blinked at him. “Was that a joke I just heard?” Talamir asked, in utter disbelief. “A pun?”
“Not possible,” he replied blandly. “No sense of humor have I. All know this.”
I always loved Alberich. He was awesome.
He and Captain Kerowyn were as alike as two peas in a pod! It’s a shame he never met Tarma. :-)
Max in the new vote incentive looks like she’s just zonking out. Maybe on that hypothetical laundry day she’s just staring at a TV in dull fascination?
Pretty sure the mirrors for such towers are only installed after all the heavy construction is finished. Easier to access both the tower and the tether anchors, space for construction machinery and you don’t get the dust caused by the construction on them.
I wonder if you could paint the base with Vantablack for optimal results.
No, you cannot. VANTA black is not a paint.
Also, it is extremely susceptible to dust, and will become normal black/brown very quickly.
What if you put a clear coat over it?
To be fair, he could be having Supers put the tower together, while “his” country produce the components and the greenhouses.
Building multiple towers at once by this method allows him to get more people into employment quickly, to boost the economy. The surplus electricity is a potential export, as is any excess food produced in the greenhouses.
He just needs to make sure that the factories have sufficient upskilling courses to ensure that the employees can move to other jobs when the towers are all built – although, there will be other infrastructure jobs in terms of roads, buildings etc to assist in softening the transition.
That would actually make it worse. I wouldn’t want to be the super flying through the bundled beam of a couple hundred mirrors.
Shades fix everything? XD
Haha. I am not fond of it, but this is a bit surprising.
Honestly? I’d have had her watching Anime,
Dirty Pair probably.
the angle of those seats almost made me think she was watching Porn until i looked at teh screen.
well unless that’s her kink.
So Teen Titans has its own Super deformed series now like Gundam SD? Or was this made specifically for the comic?
SD is not all of it. Teen Titans Go turns Robin into an obsessive, narcissistic, paranoid control freak while Beast Boy and Cyborg become mocking moronic frat boys leaving Raven as an apathetic loner and Starfire as the nice cloudcuckoolander. Typical episodes rarely demonstrate heroic ideals by anyone: Starfire marrying a pot of chili con carne. The team goes on a road trip but never notice the headcount is off by 2. They plan to infiltrate enemy HQ and blow it up, but stay overlong since enemy HQ is nicer.
See Wikipedia
Good grief what have they done to the show of my childhood? From your description they took the worse topical traits that the characters occasionally displayed turn them up to 11 and made that into their entire story arc
Which is exactly how fans of the comic the 2000’s cartoon was based on felt about the 2000’s cartoon….granted the comics would actually get worse than the cartoon (by going in the opposite direction and the 2000’s cartoon got descent)…but when it was on I remember seeing more hate on the internet about it than love, and didn’t see really any of this love for it until Go came out.
I used to read the 1980’s and 1990’s Comics well I think in the 1990s it was called Young Justice and I didn’t have a problem with the Teen Titans cartoon from the 2000 yes some of the comics I was reading more older than me but I like them all the same. I will admit that I did not care much for cyborgs see-through aspect but I felt that the characters themselves were pretty much okay including cyborg trying all too hard to be a cheerful happy member of the team despite the fact that he hated that he was no longer fully human
Your experiences may differ.
I just remember when the show first came on, all the angry comments on CN’s forum, on general forums, bad reviews that focused on calling it (wannabe anime going too far with the emotion reactions) and accusing it of dumbing down the characters for kids, and a bunch of different online comic strips poking fun of it.
I didn’t pick up on the most positive of vibes from the online communities I saw who talked about.
Not till it was cancelled.
and didn’t see this giant out pouring of love for it till years after it was cancelled, which seemed to gain the most steam more recently in history when Go came out and the fans of the original found each other.
It could be in part how the internet has changed since then as well with people having an easier time finding each other, or less intimidated by the hate.
Get sort of the same thing with Squirrel Girl fans (it was a band wagon hate) till recent years when she got her own comic and cartoon announcements and more people who never heard of her got into her and shot down the band wagons with flaming arrows of love.
Teen Titans Go just makes me eyeroll. It’s basically a cross between “Friends” and “Teletubbies”, with some “Seinfeld” thrown in for extra “nothing”. It’s superheroes doing everything but being superheroes. It’s just a waste. They could have rolled dice to make characters suitable for the show and not wasted the Teen Titans on a show about nothing geared for pre-teens.
The old Teen Titans show, which ironically used the same musical group, Puffy Ami Yumi, to do the theme music for both shows, was superior if only because it actually made use of fairly classical superheroes to BE superheroes. You might as well start a massively-high tech supergroup with Paragon-class or higher superpowers, then use them to staff a coffee shop or a pizzeria. (Though a speedster would make a GREAT pizza delivery person!) Ghu knows that TTG revolves around the twin stars of pizza and idiocy, but frankly, it’s a bit demeaning to the superheroes to relegate them to fart jokes and eating contests.
I have the same issues with reuse of old superheroes only to completely retcon them into something worthless, regardless of which heroes it might be….though if they wanted to take the failed applicants from the Legion of Superheroes and turn THEM into a Seinfeld/Friends pastiche about nothing, that might work. Instead of including Superboy with them, though, just include Plastic Man marooned in the 31st century, and you’ve got all the yuks and primary colors the little tots need to keep them mesmerized.
Puffy Ami Yumi was a waayyy better show than TTG!
Teen Titans Go isn’t universally reviled; you just have a readership who predominantly watched the previous Teen Titans show and can’t handle Teen Titans Go being different.
Not that I watch it, of course, but I’m honest about the reason why.
You honestly believe people don’t like it because it is different? Cereally?
Yes. Same reason the comic fans hated Teen Titans!
Honestly I read the comics and still enjoy the original Teen Titans Teen Titans Go from what I’ve heard on this site would probably be akin to ripping out my eyes and grating them against the grindstone
I watch plenty of childish ****
Some of it is good
Some of it is just bad
Some of it is offensively bad. TTG belongs to the latter group.
They don’t like it because it replaced a FAR better show, and that show was taken off the air seemingly for no reason, when it had good ratings and the merchandise was selling. It replaced a good show with a well-done narrative with the standard idiocy-faire, which can be amusing to watch (as long as you shut your brain off completely to look at the pretty colors, although some episodes like 40 40 20 were fun) but it was vastly… VASTLY inferior to the original show.
The fact that it went on air almost IMMEDIATELY after Teen Titans was removed made it look like it replaced the better show, rather than the first show failed and they thought up some new show for a different demographic.
Plus TTG pokes fun at the fans of the first show rather regularly with easter eggs, and fandoms can be very ornery if you pour salt on the wounds.
TTG tends to be more popular with a much younger audience, who are just entertained more by random zaniness rather than a narrative storyline, where continuity is unimportant.
To be fair, it wasn’t taken off the air for no reason. What actually happened was the show ended on 4 seasons, and then the Network decided to pay for a 5th season, but not tell the Team that it wasn’t going to continue beyond that one extra season.
So, if you stop at season 4 and ignore season 5, you get a great ending to a fantastic show, plus a fun little movie on the side (Trouble in Tokyo).
At best Teen Titans Go is the tv version of Jingling keys at a baby to keep it entertained.Having your leg amputated is different too but its not something Id recommend.
Hang on….Vale is an incorporeal being inhabiting a hollow shell…and she YAWNS?!?!?
WHY?
Dunno, strikes me as weird, too.
Everyone knows you need to cover your mouth when yawning so your soul doesn’t escape, and
A) she doesn’t, so
B) her soul(s) should be roaming around the plane right now.
Well one theory is she isn’t a misty being naturally, but a super with eldritch powers. *Sciona just never encountered a super with eldritch powers before so didn’t think she was a super*.
Because she is bored?Even eldritch abominations desire entertainment and Vales being around the more corporeal races long enough to pick up a few habits. ^^
Dave should make it so that when clicked the channel changes to a series of embarrassing/ridiculous/awful shows.
This would be a very interesting idea if it changed by refreshing the page or was a ditigal comic that had a timed rotation. (Not useful for a print version, but shrug)
I say keep it.
There’s 3 main reason TTG gets flak. One the original was better/new doesn’t stay true/kid like. This is a huge % of the gripe and while yes I did like the other one better, it’s solely because of how good the past series was. Basiclly saying a show is bad because something better came before it.
Next is the style change which I can understand. It looks chibi and not nearly detailed, but other cartons have also had their time in the reworked art spotlight too such as Be Cool Scooby Doo and Ben 10. Shows do go through rough patches with reboot phases.
The last reason is the tone. Many people hate the low brow humor and the idiotic versions of the team (again mostly because of the rich storytelling/characters the original had along with its humor). While it can be grading at some points there are good joke and references in the series as well as being self aware at how much the fan base hates it/want the original.
The nice thing about solar updraft towers as a form of renewable energy is that they turn solar into a base-load energy source, rather than peaking. Plus using cheap materials instead of rare earth elements. Normally without grid scale energy storage (which is typically either hellishly expensive, dependent or geography, or both) the practical options for base-load power are coal, natural gas, nuclear, or hydroelectric. The downside is low relative efficiency, requiring a large land area to function. That’s not much of a problem if you happen to have plenty of dessert type land in your country in which to put them, of course.
My hatred of Teen Titans Go is the fact that the original show had characters that were written for eachother and for dramatic tension. They were not made for comedy. It makes as much sense to have the Three Stooges doing an action hero movie as it does to have the Teen Titans doing a slaostick show.
Also any given line from the original show, written out, you know who said it just from what was said. In TTG, any line can come from any character. So in the original show, comedy came from the characters and situations, while in TTG, the comedy comes from what was said and nothing more. The characters are interchangible in TTG.
Lastly, TT was canceled for apparently no reason, then years later TTIs coming back, yay… but, no, it’s TTG.
In summary, its the lack of respect for the source material that’s the problem, not the show itself. If the show used OC characters, it would have been fine.
I used to hate TTG but my children like it and so because I am trying to be a good father I tolerate it and act excited with them despite my dislike. I also use every moment of idiocy I can as a teachable moment. TTG is definitely written to take advantage of a young child’s psychology in order to get them excited and sell merchandise. When kids stop pestering their parents for expensive bits of cheap plastic or parents get tired of tolerating it then it will fade into obscurity and the next merch show will attempt to bilk parents out of money through their children. This will continue until the public has had enough and greed/good cycle goes back to good usually through the replacement of ineffective executives.
If I had any comparison to make it would be to compare TTG and Teen Titans to Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic SatAM (DIC’s 2nd attempt). The first Sonic the Hedgehog was primary colors and shapes, lots of running around, yelling, and slapstick with lowbrow characters and even more lowbrow humor. It was juvenile at best, kindergarten fan fiction at worst and somehow TTG stayed more true this formula than it did. Then you had Sonic SatAM. This show was great. It had high quality animation, actual story arcs including an overarching plot, and good humor including subtle jokes for adults. It was a more mature show. It even had a subtle environmental message about saving the forests. Teen Titans likewise was a more mature show though not as good at first. However unlike Sonic SatAM, which was cancelled after a single season (damn tragedy), Teen Titans was given the chance to grow and mature with additional seasons. It lost a little steam in the fifth season but that was because the fourth season was epic and hard to top. At the very end it was hooking everyone back in with the Terra plot line and the return of Slade and then it was cancelled. Why? Because some executive got a boner for a new toy line so Teen Titans needed to go so it would quit taking the focus off of the new show. Also the audience had aged and older teens don’t (convince their parents to) buy as many merch products. They are more airtime consumers and less product consumers much like adults. Most of your shows catering to the general american public don’t have merchandise because they won’t buy any. Those shows are supported primarily by their advertisements and sponsors. Good news is they found a new revenue stream and that is the nostalgia bandwagon so in another 5-10 years the Teen Titans will be back in a new but more mature form catering to those who missed the good old days.
You can’t change it. Or maybe you can. Social media is making things happen these days that would otherwise never happen. I’d say the MeToo social change stuff, which is really important if out of context to this discussion, but in this case I mean that Young Justice got a 3rd season primarily because of Netflix and Social Media. So hey maybe there is hope.
Sorry for the rant! This being the internet here comes the dissenting opinions! Yay!!!
True. Greed rules all. Deus probably agrees.
Honestly, just make it a generic game show (three contestants at podiums plus someone with one of those long, thin stick microphones) so you’re not having an issue with anyone else’s copyrights or trademarks.
Yeah, I’d say keep the Teen Titans Go! screen – as soon as I saw it, all I could think was “Wow, she IS evil!”
Solar Chimneys don’t need to be purely vertical.
In none open areas going up the side of a mountain works just as well. Gets you a much longer run of Draw Chimney effect and a larger delta T over L (should be cursive small L) ie change in temp over distance. Meaning more air moves as a mass causing larger change in pressure at base. Increasing draw through the generator blades and thus better power generation capabilities. Verticals also tend to cool fast and need mirrors to heat sections of chimney over ambient temps to get the air moving. A mountain based angled chimney will draw with weather changes at top too even if there’s not much of a temp differential. Storm forming up top? Sucks air through the chimney which will feed power via heat and intrinsic heat and humidity to the storm at the top of the mountain.
At night you can use the reversal Colder air at top rerouted through the same tube to power generators at night. Air is denser and as it descends and warms it will expand this means more push volume through the generator at low peak hours. So it’s not daylight dependent as are desert/flat located chimneys.
But if you have flat terrain, desert terrain with no oil or mineral value? Solar chimneys are a good way to make something from nothing.
Tom Kratman uses the mountain based solar chimneys in his Carrera Series to help power a poorer nation.
From an applied physics standpoint having a physical anchor and longer run is cheaper, easier to maintain and you can run 3 plus tubes up the same length instead of one large tube. Ground wind or winds aloft on a mountain side can actually help on draw effect at top meaning higher Delta P change and thus higher flow rate in tubes of air from pressure changes instead of just delta T changes in temp and density.
As for the show. First time I saw the new TT I blinked and said “WTF did they do to classic animation and story telling?” It was like they were suddenly pandering cheaper animation and stupid jokes to the next generation to purposely dull their minds. Proof was that stoners seemed to love the new chibi/shitty animation shows that suddenly came about with the banning of saturday morning cartoons.
This change wasn’t “new art” but done on purpose to both save money and fit governmental decisions. It was Common Core math of cartoons. Pure crap that approximated it’s real origins to make more brain dead kids.
Yep I personally think that a assistant villain an accessory villain??? A person who professionally has distaste for superheroes would watch and enjoy a superhero cartoon where the protagonists are failures as heroes.
… That actually makes sense: she’s not watching it because she enjoys the show, she’s watching it because it’s making heroes look like complete bungling moroniots
At leas he is using renewable energy to power his evil schemes.
I like both the first TT cartoon and TTG. I feel like that singular fan in that one episode.
I echo, Vale looks super cute here and yet can pull off the staaare when necessary, is cool. Plus she doesn’t mind telling off Deus when he is being a jerk. Which implies she has some moral fibre, even thought she seems to be consisting of not much else.
Well there is the possibility she is contracted to Deus thanks to a summoning, if so the trope of the spirit, demon, eldritch horror, ect… that has a differing personality or outlook than the summoner is a thing *usually more extreme like a good spirit forced to work a bad man or an evil spirit forced to work for the side of good* minor differences would be interesting. Of course she could also just be hanging around him and working for him because he amuses her.
The possibility of orange/blue morality is still there where something make them look good but others evil. Sort of like if humans were viewed from another animals perspective that can’t comprehend why the same creature that carries a dog around like its own child, feeds cats, thinks bunnies are cute, rides a horse, will also imprison and devour pigs, torment fish before eating them, and slaughter entire ant colonies just for existing near them.
I know this is may have been mentioned before but I don’t feel like digging through thousands of previous pages and their comments.
Has anyone considered how Opal might be involved in rescuing Sydney from her current predicament? Her powers would likely need amplifying but between Pixel and Dabbler that shouldn’t be an issue.
Okay maybe thousands of pages is wishful thinking LOL = P
I had considered this combination, but not said it:
Opal + Skybreaker = interplanetary/transdimensional portal?
It might be a way to handle the thing without needing blood magic.
and then Guu similarity deepens (yeah Trope reversal, a cute eldritch abomination).
Good grief. Am I the only one who wants to know what the woman who doesn’t need a weapon has in the fancy rifle case on the coffee table?
That… would be the Cosmic Canopener
The portal cutting sword is probably in there.
I’m sorry but Deus is a man of class and taste. I cannot abide by the idea that he would even permit Teen Titans Go to be shown on one of his many, many private ultra-luxurious jets. That jet will HAVE to be destroyed, and its components melted down to make urinal cakes or something.
At least we agree on how bad TTG! is :P
Yes, that is the thing which brings people of all beliefs together. A shared agreement on how much INCREDIBLY worse TTG is compared to the original Teen Titans.
I’m pretty sure this could end wars by a shared belief in a mutual cause.
Never got a chance to see the original Teen Titans (or Young Justice), butt don’t need to have to know how biley bad TTG! is
Even the Batman series with that deformed Joker (you know the one, dreadlocky hair and teeth that would make an Englishman vomit) was better
The fact the creators of that shit know it is shit to the point they self-parody their own shitness makes it far more worse, not better
The Sound of Music or Tora Tora Tora would have been a nice choice for the screen imo…
…or a cooking show… or any extra-syrupy rom-com / chick-flick.
Alright, so to begin, I totally realize this is a purely fantasy based comic, so you can really do what you want with it and I totally support that. I just had to point a few things out…
First, the largest functional solar updraft tower only put out 200kW. They have, as the article states, theoretical ones to put out 200MW which would be 1/10th the Hoover Dam’s output. Only problem there would be: you’d need over 7 square miles of solar panes. That’s a LOT of space. Totally doable of course, but still…
Second, the efficiency is still utter crap compared to nuclear or combined cycle plants or of course water like the dam (ultimate efficiency what with input equaling output, only dependent on the input side).
Third: Deus is a business man. This type of energy production is what one would call an extremely long term investment. Solar and wind are this way as well with most companies not building anything unless they lock the state or a power company (depending on if a state is regulated or not) into a power package agreement guaranteeing them X amount of money per MW for X years (usually 20). This means it will be at least a decade before they get their investment back and start making money. It’s a solid plan since it means 20 years of constant and reliable income for already large power companies. A small one would not likely do this as they wouldn’t have the initial capital to start the process. Deus strikes me as a risk taker, not so much a ‘safe’ businessman.
Fourth (and potentially most important): since it’s not likely a simple business strategy as it’s being clearly displayed… Even if he made one that put out 200MW, this would be a silly choice. He could build several different things to put out more or the same power for much MUCH cheaper and it’d take less time. Hell, he could buy two simple cycle gas turbines to put out that power and be done in a few months AND he’d have more control over the power output (this is important if he’s using the power for just about anything). This, like wind and solar (the ones not using steam technology as well), have no real way to control power output. You get what you get.
Like I said, it’s fantasy, so you can do what you like. I just found this an odd choice is all. :D
Unless… he’s using the Skybreaker to set up a perpetual motion machine, producing unlimited power for himself.
While making other power companies think that investing in solar updraft towers is feasible. Hee hee hee hee…
Open portal to the Elemental plane of fire at the bottom and the Elemental Plane of air at the top, constant intense heat and wind. UNLIMITED POWER!!!!!
I agree, I think Deus is going to be force-multiplying everyday physics with some eldritch magic.
That said, danea is absolutely right – nuclear power is incomprehensibly more efficient than anything else. Hopefully we can get some “clean energy” funding diverted back into thorium reactors and such soon; even some of the most die-hard environmentalists now understand that nuclear power is far cleaner and safer than current ‘green’ options.
You should have had here watching something classic like Jem and the Holograms!
So… previous page we’re looking up at a gigantic monster and joking about a particle beam enema…
This page we have a delivery of a magical implement that can open portals… And a really gigantic tower.
Anyone else thinking that these two scenes are actually going to get combined in some way?
If Deus opens the portal only to have Sydney blasts chunks of alien all over his ribbon-cutting press conference, I will award you all the internet points.
In fact, have 1000 points just for making me laugh picturing the interaction between Deus and Halo should this happen. And Max’s reaction to seeing it unfold on live TV.
Yea, TTG is a TERRIBLE show, but I’ll let it speak for itself.
https://youtu.be/BiwjxTFZ94o
It’s actually a disguised spacecraft launcher (per HG Wells) isn’t it?
Why would you ever create a solar updraft tower instead of a regular solar farm? I feel like they’re just be flat out worse than regular solar panels, both in cost and area.
Actually no. The solar updraft takes more tower construction skill but we’re pretty experienced with that. The turbines in it are easier to build and maintain than normal windmills too and it has more regular power than wind or solar panels.
Is it just me or does she look weird in the first panel? It looks like her thighs are as long as her torso and her feet are bigger than her head.
