Grrl Power #660 – Armored on the inside
To be fair to whoever made the orbs, this is a pretty unusual situation to account for.
I’m not… too sure what else to say about this page. I didn’t plan on having her glasses break, admittedly a detail that’s easy to miss on this page, but now I get to draw broken glasses on her for the next however many pages. She could take them off. She really only needs them for reading, but it kind of doesn’t quite look like Sydney when I forget them. I guess I’ll have to decide if I want to stick with the big round ones when she gets her next pair. I’ll experiment with that maybe when she goes shopping next.
Panel three I straight up didn’t draw clearly. It’s supposed to be building across the street from Sydney blowing up. Like the beam went over the top of the one Sydney is hiding behind and blew the top off of it. Instead I drew an explosion and a wall.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. $1 and up, but feel free to contribute as much as you like.
I am guessing that her shields pin balling of the artillery took enough potential energy away that it just hit her harder than your average bullet, but not so hard it would pierce her body armour, since that’s likely an armour piercing high impact rail gun blast. (which implies her sheild orb can take way more brute force than maxima’s maxima smash)
Aaand I forgot to hit Reply instead of new comment. see below for my response, sorry.
As Elxir said, it is debrie. Hurled really fast by the boomboom. But debrie.
I am more interested in the intresting behavior of the proyectile within the shield boundaries.
That’s… actually how one would expect a projectile to react, it’s called ‘Rick O’Shea’
“debris”
Yes, I’m a Grammar Nazi…
not a very good one if you ignore proyectile and intresting.
And reply to the wrong person :P
looks right to me
unless you were talking about 7D4’s reply in which case you also replied to the wrong person sir
Nope, it was an add-on reply to 8d5‘s comment :P
Please don’t do that. Don’t refer to yourself as a ‘Grammar Nazi’ when your correction is not remotely conserning grammer. Cause U culd attract ire of them wut nose wut grammer iz. U’ll knot B plz’d.
With the exection that a “Rick O’Shea”ing projectile would loose trajectory and force each time. Even more if it has no sferical shape. Do to wind resistance and all.
Large amount of force is lost in the debris momentum being converted into spin or loss of spin with each bounce….. Btw tough rock to take a dozen bounces without fragmenting….
It came from the exploded building, so may not have been rock butt an alien metal
Actually, that looks like a piece of debris from the exploding building, which would fit with the trajectory much better than a railgun shot.
Guessing that Sydney could not react fast enough to realize “Oh hell, there is something bouncing around in muh shield!” and let go of the shield orb for a split second to allow the debris to safely pop out and then immediately regrab the shield orb.
Yeah, panel six is happening in just a few seconds, she’s still reacting to the projectile smashing her glasses in panel four
Also, there’s plenty of other debris falling around her that dropping the shield to get rid of just one piece is probably not wise.
Yes, was looking for this comment to comment on the still-falling debris (or would it be ‘rubble’?) would make dropping Mr Buble even for a second to allow Rick O’Shea to escape (and having to time the drop perfectly: no point dropping it if RIck is still in the middle only to remain trapped) more hazardous
We’re about to find the funny unknown reddish ball with the cloud in the center is a medibay.
Hmm, interesting thought.
She’s been hurt before without it activating though. Also, I kinda suspect her uniform/armor kept her from getting really hurt by the derbies.
Come on body armor.
Wow. I really like how this is progressing. Both the art and the story. Bang up job.
Thank you Anvil!

the problem is that the bullet resilient uniform wont stop sharp piercing objects such as that piece of shrapnel, even if it managed to halt the debris it will still have stab pretty deep into Sydney’s stomach hopefully it missed the vital organs
Actually you are remembering wrong. The armour is effective against bullets and projectiles. The fadter the object is moving the better the non-newtonian armour will work. It’s not effective against slowly being stabbed by a knife. Or 50 caliber or higher projectiles. Given how slowly it’s moving it falls under large slow bullet. The armour will be perfect against it.
I just realized that her “space ship” doesn’t have a “medical bay” yet. It WAS one of the options discussed way back they talked about (shudder) papercuts.
Unknown CAN’T be medical.
The Air Orb will have to step up.
In sequence….
Local anesthetic
Antiseptic
Antibiotic
Regenerative paste
Artificial skin
Liquid bandage
Liquid bandage over the Forcefield orb
Sleep juice
I would have liked a saline drip, but I’m no EMT.
She can hold out for a while yet, but it’s probably too much to beat it on her own.
Got to wonder, will the cavalry arrive in the form of her friends, or will someone completely unexpected show up first?
Sydney has to be the only super hero in existence who has a major weakness is “Leveling up”
This talk about ‘debris’ and ‘rubble’, what exactly is the difference?
With ‘flotsam’ and ‘jetsam’, ‘jetsam’ is the stuff thrown overboard (ie jettisoned) and ‘flotsam’ is the stuff that doesn’t sink when the rest of the vessel does (ie floating crap)
I think Rubble is broken structure, whereas Debris is broken (loose) objects (like a crate)?
Debris is more general and means anything that has been broken up into pieces. Rubble is more specific and refers to pieces of a broken building. It can also mean the loose, rough stones used as some kind of filler or bulk, used in masonry to build a wall.
Okay, so it is like flotsam ‘n’ jetsam: debris is broken crap from inside a building, and rubble is the broken building itself
no no no, debris is ANYTHING broken, like, a car crashed the headlights smashed the glass from the headlights is debris on the side of the road, in this instance nothing to do with a building; it’s like, tomatoes are both fruits and vegetables cuz according to the Random House Unabridged Dictionary a fruit is the part of a plant that forms from a flower whereas a vegetable is any edible part of a plant, so since tomatoes are edible plant parts and come from the flower they count as both; debris can be found in a building but is not neccessarily related to a damaged building; and as for flotsam and jetsam, flotsam is debris in the water that was accidental, jetsam was thrown overboard deliberately
…Maybe you could toss in a tiny “kshh!” sound-effect text in panel 4 when her glasses get damaged? It would help the reader understand that yes, her glasses did get damaged?
Uh Oh.
We are at comic #660 – will we see the beast take on the cthulhu?
3 weeks to go.
Hopefully it will be a combination ‘Welcome Back TMH’ and Dabbler’s Cluthnukkah celebration.
Cthulhu an Alien and Looks a Lot Like that…So It Might Be Cthulhu woke up and Left earth in this reality and that Might Be him……
I am wondering If that IS Cthulhu! I hope Sydney serous about Exsta Arms … And Tentacles will be ok with her..
Ohhhh Idea Maybe she get Captured And Upgraded as a Mind Controlled Villain !!! That is One Way to Get Home!
I guess we are going to find out how effective that ballistic fabric is
Oh yeah, you can experiment all you want with glasses, but you’re gonna have to put the old ones back in by the end of this arc.

So, what became of upgrade …seems like talent tree was broken before point as inserted.
Is it just me or is the path the projectile is taking bouncing around the shield wrong? Looking at the 4th and 5th panels the projectile went through her glasses hit the shield roughly at degree 250 and then bounced at a downward angle off the shield roughly toward degree 150. And yet in the 6th panel instead bouncing towards degree 150 it bounced towards degree 85.
Also using the back ground and Sydney’s positions in all the panels the projectile should start bouncing in the shield at the red ping not below it. I don’t have a protractor to check the starting path in panel 4 but the paths seem different between panel 4, 5, and 6.
(for reference: top of the shield is degree 0/360, right is degree 90, down is degree 180, and left is degree 270.)
Not like we could tell whether she was short-sighted or long-sighted given you NEVER BOTHER DETAILING THE GLASSES.
