Grrl Power #673 – Beware the history tab
I’m not sure Sydney would be quite thoughtful enough to notice that the first icon in the travel log is glitchy and weird. Well, she’d notice, but ascribing potential life and death significance to the press of a button is probably a step further than her mind might take her on a regular day. That’s assuming she’s correct in her assumptions, of course.
On the other hand, narrowly escaping death multiple times in the last few moments might have her a bit on edge. She could be thinking that narratively, she’s due for a big fuck up or setback, so her trope sense is on high alert.
I spent a while trying to figure out what the orbs’s gateway would look like, and for some reason, I made it look like a TV effect from the 70’s. I’m sure Sydney appreciates the retro look anyway.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. $1 and up, but feel free to contribute as much as you like.
WOOT! Warp drive – here we come!
Wait, if the first addon to max speed gives you stargate portals, WHAT THE HECK DOES THE NEXT ONE DO?
Furlings.
This comment wins the internet today.
Furling? Like a flag or a sail? How is that relevant?
They either meant a furlong, or curling
No, they actually meant , a mentioned but never quite seen race in the Stargate series.
Increased range per warp?
First thought is that the “history” tab is also the only places she can access. So the orbs must go there by other means before they can take her there directly by wormhole.
Second thought is that it’s only within the same galaxy. One of the previous owners obviously had worm-hole travel. There’s nothing to say they didn’t have more pips filled and could travel from the Milky-Way galaxy to others. If Sydney is in another galaxy then this would easily explain why the Earth icon is “fuzzy”. Not because it’ll necessarily kill her but because it’s out of range.
Third thought is that there may be further travel type capabilities. Time travel, Dimension travel, etc.
Well if I was doing the engineering then it would be dimensional shifting along the line of “sliders”.
Time shifting causes all sorts of entanglements and an outright mess of timeline branches.
Well the interference could also be caused by the VEIL
according to special and general relativity Superluminal speed is time travel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUMGc8hEkpc
Yeah, pretty much anything where causality propagates faster then the speed of light is either time travel, or impossible, or both. No information, such as something being in one place and then being in another place faster than light from the first position could reach the second, can ever take place.
Which means that unless we come up with the technology for a generation ship, or a freezer for people or at least cells that can thaw or create new people from eggs and sperm or cells or whatever at the far end, humanity will never exit our solar system.
My money is on us wiping out the environment we need to live. We’re the biological equivalent of a species which does indeed shit where it lives. :(
Hang on a minute – I’m assuming that only means light in free-space, right. After all, you get Cherenkov radiation because the motion of charged particles is faster than the local speed of light in the same medium.
That, and the slowest recorded speed of light being 38mph through a Bose-Einstein condensate…
I’m not sure that the phase velocity is the same as the ‘local’ speed of light.
I don’t think they are precisely the same, but despite 16 hours of calculus and a few other higher math and physics classes, all of which were a few decades ago, I’m not sure.
Just don’t forget to use the GDO before heading through the Stargate.
THANK YOU for not cutting away to Max or something. I HAD to know what was going on with Halo!
Well, you know what the next scene is going to be, don’t you? A cut away.
Sadly enough, that’s almost a certainty now. Maybe in the next episode we’ll see the Squiddies pack up and leave, relieved that the Mighty Halo decided to let them live. And THEN a spaceship arrives with Dabbler, Maxima and the rest, looking for Sydney…
Next comic:
#Maxima and team arrive at the Alari homeworld#
Maxima: What was that bright light in the sky? It was there only for a second.
Dabbler: Looked like a stargate.
Oh damn, the awesomeness just went warpspeed!
Yeah, but she’s still a few power ups away from Plaid…
EVERY speed Sydney goes at is ludicrous. I mean, we’ve seen her sleep.
Maybe the next level allows you to travel at the speed of Brian
[Anthony_Lion]:
…& beyond LIGHTSPEED — even beyond PLAID, there’s the Speed Of … LINT!!!
( … “SPOO-OO-OO-OONNNN!!!?!” … )
;)
:)
Browser history has never been this dangerous!
thats becouse most web browsers dont have a TFL add-on
Actually they all do, but unfortunately, due to the poor coding on as lot of sites(usually the old ads) the FTL add-on hangs until it’s effectively better to just walk…
Well, if that’s the only problem, you can just shut the Pi Hole to fix it.
I’m curious what reaction Maxima and the rest of her teammates will have to her having leveled up twice and adding warp-capabilities to her repertoire when she finally sees them again. Looks like we’ll be getting a chance first though to see what she can learn about the previous owner of the Orbs (also interesting to think that if the center location DOES actually improve her intuitive understanding of what they can do she’d gain total understanding with just 4 more level ups if she puts the points there).
I also wonder if she actually has traveled through time as some speculate then does that mean she needs to level up the flight orb another level or two to unlock time travel to return to her proper place in space/time.
I don’t think the balls can actually handle timetravel.
She leveled up 3 times, 1 level for the first mega squidward that she finished the flight speed line with, and 2 for the 3 on 1 battle where she shot through cyclops, where she put 1 in warp drive and 1 in center pool.
The first was after killing a ton of the small guys, and she got two more after killing two of the giant ones.
You’re right I did forget that very first one, so she’s leveled up even more impressively, enough to really leave Maxima and the rest wondering just how powerful is she really because I doubt Maxima could have managed what Sidney did. About the only one we’ve seen able to possibly match her is Vehemence and that’s only after he’s had time to soak up plenty of violence energy.
Just hanging out on the Alari homeworld at this point would probably boost Kevin to Demigod status.
Actually, finishing a line of Speed would explain a lot of things about Sydney in general.
“Speed” is amphetamine, the key ingredient in Adderall. Amphetamine in people with ADHD doesn’t get us high. I literally get more of a high off of corn chips. (I do mean that literally: corn produces a sort of natural THC in the body when we digest it, though it’s a very, very tiny amount, relatively speaking.)
All amphetamine does is clear up the brain fog and make it easier to concentrate…and if you take too much, it doesn’t speed up an AHDH brain. It just makes it difficult to fall asleep, which in itself can bring back the brain fog. >.<
Probably “YOU FUCKING FOUGHT THE GIANT SPACE ALIEN SHIPS TO GET THOSE?!!?”
well three level ups but still. than main thing is that she killed at lease one of them and severely maimed if not killed a second one. which i thick with majorly tick off and impress Maxima.
Oh, no. I think it’s pretty damn obvious that she killed two of the kaiju. The first one she tore into little bitty pieces, and the second one she put a very large hole in it’s head from the front, through the eyeball that was generating the tractor beam, and through the back or it’s head. I suppose if the kaiju don’t keep their brains in their heads it might still be alive, but there was probably something pretty vital in all that mass, so I’m betting on dead.
And that’s not counting about a thousand fighter craft.
Others have suggested that hole through the head may not be enough to kill one of those monsters and considering there alien physiology that may very well be true. Especially considering the after she blew through his head and went and grabbed his face.
It kind of makes me sad that “Sydney separated from the rest of the group” story might go on for years… This is like the start of Quantum Leap or something…
I want to see them all back together again.
Loved Quantum Leap, wish I’d never seen the last episode…
You mean when he enters the Quantum Tunnel and we don’t see him come out? What was wrong with that? At least it wasn’t like “Time Tunnel” where they kept going back further and further in time… Reading about “Time Tunnel” makes me think maybe got it mixed up with another show, and no, not “Land of the Lost”
Or sliders, or the origional Lost in Space TV series (The one where the first seaosn was black and white).
Actually the final episode of ‘The Time Tunnel’ started in the exact same spot as the first. Them appearing on the deck of the Titanic.
No, not Tunnel, maybe mum is just having another senile moment because she’s now getting it confused with “Quantum Leap”
Originally, she was telling me it was about this guy (or people) on a river that kept going further and further back in time (because rivers only flow one way)
The river going backwards in time was a completely different show but for the life of me I can’t remember it’s name …. help?
Wait, there was a show like that? Confirmation is good enough for me (and for mum), the name of the show we can worry about some other time :D
@Guesticus
No, in the final episode of Quantum Leap He ended up in a mysterious bar with people who looked like others he had helped. He doesn’t know what he was doing there. He eventually finds out that the bartender is God and that he was brought there intentionally. God likes the good work he’s doing righting wrongs, but tells him unfortunately he’ll never return home. The Quantum Leap experiment was non-reversible. He’ll be leaping for eternity.
Was actually talking about the very end, had forgotten the Diner Scene leading up to it
After posting that, went and found the final scene
The worst part is that we already know how to ‘end’ a leap from the time when Al ended up back in time in his own body and Sam found himself in the hologram chamber back in the future.
Specifically, Sam created a revised targeting algorithm that could lock onto Al, then used it to leap into Al, displacing him back into the “waiting room” where all the people displaced by the leaper get sent.
So the answer is simple: target Sam with the new algorithm, then take the displaced original inhabitant of the timeline out of the waiting room and throw them into the accelerator. Boom, the original goes back to where they started and Sam ends up in the waiting room.
Sure, the person they targeted will have some weird and vague memories that probably scan like most alien abduction stories, and their life will probably never get ‘fixed’ but that was the course they were already on anyway so it’s basically null.
You mean where the end was fade-to-black and the message-over, that told you what happened to all the characters, and then ended with, “Sam never came back”?
Tore my gut out.
Not nearly as bad as the ending to “Gunbuster”: they managed to get home, after 12 thousand years :(
Well, the at least positive part about Gunbuster is even getting home 12000 years later, Humanity still remembered them.
They all went on that mission knowing they might never get home again.
Yeah, that, for me, added to the wrenching of the hearts: after 12 thousand years, after countless evolutions and advances in tech (scientific and medicinal), someone (or something) on Earth was able to detect who and what they were and turned on the lights for them
Well, just click on the “First” button up there and go through a few pages. This part of the story is STILL a flashback. It’s a super-extended, multi-issue flashback story that is really forgetting the “flash” part of flashback. Is it even a flashback if it takes this long? There should be a word for a story that begins a prequel almost immediately after starting.
Actually, speaking as a writer, the initial strip would be the outlier and would be considered a prologue, with an epilogue bringing the reader “up to speed” aka “the present” at the end of the main story.
It’s along the lines of a film starting in a pub with the adventurer saying, “Lemme tell you about my last adventure,” and the film dissolves to the beginning of the adventure, and we don’t get back to the pub until the end.
Comic #637 instead of #673? Probably an early morning update oops and NOT the temporal shenanigans implied by the wonky portal that sent Sydney there or the glitchy travel history button…
On the real page 637 Sciona’s screwed up portal was still open and Sydney hadn’t been stranded yet. Maybe the stargate is going to return Sydney to that point in time. The misnumbering on this page is just DaveB leaving us a subtle clue.
Maybe it’s the Veil messing things up? What else could obscure Earth so hard from these ridiculously powerful orbs?
For example, a messed up portal which bought her to a different dimension and timeline, so the Earth could not even exist in this timeline. The fuzzy icon could mean that the target destination does has the coordinates stored, but it simply doesn’t exist in the current universe.
Alternately, it could be an anti-paradox safety or something similar, to avoid “meeting yourself” scenarios.
We know they’re in a universe and time where Harem with at least 5 bodies exists ‘somewhere’.
I simply *love* the last panel. The design of the wormhole is beautiful.
It’s a ‘Boom Tube’ ! Next Sidney comes out on Apokolps and gets to fight Darkseid.
“UNDO! UNDO!!!”
The icon of the location even looks a bit like Apokolps
omg i would feel so bad………….for darkseid. lol
Totally agree. Darkseid is strong enough to fight Superman, cruel enough to brainwash Supergirl, and smart enough to know that nobody messes with Batman. But all of them are predictable to an extent.
Sidney would be impossible to predict and I’d place a wager on that forcefield being too strong for even Darkseid.
Nah… Darkseid wasn’t smart enough to know that nobody messes with Batman… he just couldn’t hit him because of that crooked eyebeam thingie of his…
https://www.google.com/search?q=Nebezial+Shiniez+Batman+Darkseid&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjCv8O6iPfdAhVB44MKHeZGDO8Q_AUIDigB&biw=1280&bih=722#imgrc=tmaW__KyRLWXnM:&spf=1539009302841
Actually, I picture Darkseid being every bit as amused as Max by Syd’s antics.
:)
…For at least as long as she doesn’t cause massive property damage in Darkseid’s home, anyway…
I think Sydney is powerful enough that Galactus would at least talk to her amicably & not ignore her like he would a human ignoring an insect, though. He might be amused for a while, even as the time Hercules got Galactus drunk. At any rate, that would be an interesting encounter.
I’m hard-pressed to imaging someone as genre-savvy as Syd trying to cause trouble for a top-tier baddie like Darkseid. I think she’d count herself VERY lucky indeed to escape him unscathed.
I don’t think even Mother Boxes could stand up to the PPO.
So, distorted waypoint represents a location in parallel universe? One that the orb’s ‘GPS’ won’t work with, because this universe does not have an orb gps system?
Or, is the orbs GPS not working because of a time mismatch between the orbs clock and the orbs GPS systems clock.
Or, is the orbs GPS failing because its still trying to get a fix, the wormhole travel to this planet only just happened, and it has not gathered enough data.
Or is this planet too far in the wrong direction, outside its mapped area of the universe. Maybe earth was the extreme edge of its already mapped area?
Or, is the fuzzy one earth, and its messed up because the prior owner died there, or died on the way there, so the orbs arrived their but only semi active. eg, flew thru space in suspend mod with no owner, and crashed to earth. Having been in suspend mode, they didn’t track the needed data.
Also, why does the planet she selected have a line thru it.
GPS- Global Positioning System
UPS- Universal Positioning System
(Not to be confused with “United Postal Service”.)
Or GPS in this context could be Galactic Positioning System
OH CPS = cosmic positioning system!
UPS – United Parcel Service. USPS – United States Postal Service.
UPS – Uninterruptible Power Supply.
gps – grams per second (flow rate)

*Makes serious Jaffa face*:
Indeed.
O’neill: You can trust me on this!
I wonder how this thing can have a travel log like that if the ability to do this has only just been unlocked. Though even as I question this I already came up with two theories for this:
1) It remembers everywhere it has been, even if they were transported there in another way, such as a space ship or teleportation spell.
2) The orbs loose power when not bonded with a host for a long time, the ability had been activated by the previous host but was lost due to the long inactivity.
It could also be a safety feature – if there is a new user, you might not want them to have a warp drive – they may be overwhelmed when randomly stumbling over that power. Dealing back the skilltree as an learning experience is just so that the user can gradually ease into the crazily overpowered functionalities.
Training Wheels Protocol!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQEkcPeYsx0&t=8
Another safety feature could be in case the wielder of the orbs is defeated or incapacitated, his opponent can’t just pick up his weapon and be a god. For all we know the orbs were maxed out when something bad happened to their owner – perhaps a solar flare disintegrated him while joyriding to Earth?
Could be a defence against psionic/psychic overload. The orbs are connected via some form af psionic link. Telekinetic and telempathic (interesting to see if telepathic as well). That is they are tethered to her telekinetically and may be influencing her emotions empaticly. Now they are implanting information – possibly telepathically.
One would expect an unprepared mind, without active psionic abilities, might not be able to handle the full power connection and burn out. So the orbs are powered down to a level she can handle. And power up as she uses them gradually. Which actually suggest a possibly sinister reshaping of her mind, to be able to handle a greater amount of power but also possibly restructuring to handle the “input format”. Hope there is no indoctrination going on as well.
The orbs may be integrated with her nervous system and when she is unlocking new capabilities she is altering that integration rather than changing the orbs themselves. So the original owner may have had a completely different set of capabilities unlocked.
Who knows? Maybe the glitched out one is the Alari homeworld and that’s due to the giant unknown aliens that destroyed the place? Or Earth is just out of range.
Or it’s “Ghosted out” because “You’re already here”
I think you’re right. I think the Alari homeworld is the blurred entry possibly due to Sydney not travelling there using her own power or because it is in another time/dimesnion. See the blue line to the left of the blurred one, also selected by the arrow, I believe that is the current planet/location.
Space-time is a linked thing. Time is just another dimension. You can have any number of spatial dimensions and a non-spatial dimension (ie time or temperature). Imagine humans as a 4-D living thing: 3 spatial, 1 temperature (instead of time). Cool thought, right?
My guess is that on earth the fabric of spacetime is still damaged due to the runaway wormhole so she can’t teleport there atm (spacetime cooldown)
Booo Whaa Eeep
Sorry, that destination is currently unavailable.
Please try again later.
Error 404. Bad Gateway.
Could it be, if the Alari homeworld id added to the log, that is the blurred entry?
And then the one before that is earth.
Blurred could equal ‘you are too close to your previous arrival co-ordinates, insufficient room to form wormhole.’
I think you’re right. I think the Alari homeworld is the blurred entry. See the blue line to the left of the blurred one, also selected by the arrow. I believe that is the current planet.
Of course, a simple explanation is that the current location does not get an icon till you have left. Thus, just shows up as a blur to make it clear that you can’t travel to where you already are.
BUT, look at the third icon. that also is a messed up blur. Plus the regular icons are monochrome, but we have two messed up blurred icons.
I was looking at that 2nd blur as well – thinking it may be whatever the previous user ran into?
Also, given the 2 most recent ‘stable’ icons and assumption that neither is Eart, I’m not sure I would’ve picked the one that looks like the Death Star over the one that actually looks like Earth.
Put yourself in Sydney’s shoes. If you had the chance to travel home via the Star Wars universe, and therefore have even the slightest potential of coming home with A FRICKIN’ LASER SWORD!!!, what colour would you pick?
There is another explanation as to why it might be fuzzy that everyone is overlooking. You can’t warp the place you currently.
true or it could not be fuzzy and actuall an icon mean a space station.
That doesn’t explain the other fuzzy, corrupted destination in the travel history.
To me, that second one looks more like a planet surrounded by a very thick atmosphere.
I gota say pages like this make the patreon 2x really stand out, here some things look vague on the 2x image things like the ?decoration? around the portal they are super crisp!
Hopefully this gets her to Juno…. but kind of doubtable.
You might also wonder if the previous planet is why the previous owner is missing. Those lightening type bolt. Also to consider environmental issues, she might not be able t9 drop shield.
Out of the frying pan and into fire?
Could be the last portal they went to is the Alari home world. And the postal is all wierd cause the portal they went through was unstable. Which then mean Sydney is going back to earth, no detours
Well, send the light-bee through first and see if you can see the destination, Sidney…
She can’t hold that many orbs (shield- for air, fly- for travel, com- for light-bee)
Depends on how stable the wormhole is. If it stays up for a period of time after creation, she can just drop the fly orb and switch to Lightbee.
Have we seen an instance where the Orbs refuse to be released yet?
This might be that instance.
A process that can’t be halted or interupted.
Technically while buying a point on a specific orb, which is how she got teleport in the first place, tried to truesight it, and got stuck picking a point on that tree branch.
1) The glitchy symbol for the last location might be due to the messed up portal she came through and whatever interference this causes to the Orbs functionality. If it involves Time Travel, maybe that’s one of the functions the Orbs don’t have.
2) The locations he picked looks sort of artificial, so my guess is that she’ll end up at an intergalactic tourist hub or something.
3) Might be because I recently read a bunch of Green Lantern, but I think the Orbs might be similar to the power rings in that they search for compatible users on their own. Either that or the previous user was a slime and got dissolved in the ocean.
The third choice would have been my first choice.
Seas.
Not sure how hard it would be to recognize earth as seen from the South Pole.
We (Well I know I do) have a North Pole bias.
Like the UN flag.
At least Australia and New Zealand should be recognisable with the Earth viewed from the South Pole?
There actuially is a pretty good chance that Halo has picked Earth straight off the bat, because our planet doesn’t resemble a fuzzy Italian flag from any direction or something that exploded into a multi-cloured cloud.
I didn’t realize at first that the icons are animated.
If Earth was on the list she’d see it.
Maybe some worlds can’t be selected without another power up.
********
I think the CommBall has a translator.
The Pacific ocean is BIG. It’s so big, in fact, that if you look at Earth from just there, you can only see tiny spots of land at the edges. The planet would look like it’s all ocean.
Rob, that’s point Nemo.
It’s where low altitude space junk is dumped.
“You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist’s, but that’s just peanuts to
spacethe Pacific. She should use the pip boy speakers to add some sound effects, maybe pay someone to make her a traveling through the wormhole theme. Or her own theme music, she should totally have her own theme music made. Hire Hans zimmmer or someone.
This needs to start playing once she enters the portal.
Her options range from this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75V4ClJZME4
To starting this week, this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V8ZkHSOqH8
I’m not dissing [O.B.Juan]’s selections, I’m just offering my own suggestion for a theme:
… based on Syd’s last line in the last panel, of course.
;)
Final orb must be the soundtracks and snarky battle quips.
*nods*
Makes perfect sense that the orb-builders would consider that a vital necessity.
“Hopefully that actually is a wormhole and not a cosmic garbage disposal.”
Can’t be both?
Because we already saw that with Thor: Ragnarok, that’s why, and it would be impolite (not to mention possibly some serious bad legal juju) to rip off the MCU…?
Well if Palladium Books didn’t sue, than Marvel doesn’t have a footing to sue regarding a trash dimension.
Garbage Disposal? Can’t be any worse than where she is… the Alari Homeworld has been ‘trashed’…
Obviously the reason for the icon being fuzzy is the poor reception you get on Earth.
Seriously, they need to invest in more hubs down the western spiral arm if they want to encourage more visitors.
Does the orb come with a
pr0nprivate mode?She hasn’t unlocked that level-up upgrade yet…
Anyone else feeling like the Icon Sidney just pressed looks an awful lot like a Death Star?
That was my exact thought!
Going to love the look on Maxima’s face when she eventually turns up piloting a Death Star… :-D
Star Trekkin’ across the universe,
On the Starship Scoville under Captain Halo.
Star Trekkin’ across the universe,
Only going forward ’cause we can’t find reverse.
**ahem** My thoughts:
… scrambled waypoint is the current location.
… previous waypoint before that was earth.
Ooookaaaay, this could quite possibly be one of the most anticlimactic ends to an epic story arc. I mean, seriously, if her next stop is Earth (and I’m thinking highly likely), then Sydney will be reunited with the other Grrls in short order.
This arc does set up a future Earth vs aliens space fight in the future though! I mean, those aliens are defo after eliminating Sydney (especially after their losses) no questions asked!
If she does arrive at earth, she might still end up in the wrong year. She’ll arrive and meet her future self, who will teach her how to fix it?
How could she meet her future self? That’d mean her future self did not go through the wormhole, and instead got home in a different way, without jumping ahead in time.
Easily: Because her future self teaches her how to go back in time to when she left (because she learned from her future self…).
However: Whether that’s feasible or not depends on which theory of time travel you’re operating under, and whether or not she can get back in time. There’s three basic Theories of Time Travel in fiction:
1) Fate (what did happen will happen, because that’s the way it went – the most common form in fiction that involves time travel)
2) Insulated Effect (you make a change, things are different, and the fact that you made the change is “insulated” against the consequences – the Back to the Future series did this)
3) Parallel World Split (You change the past, and the original timeline remains: You create a new, separate timeline that runs in parallel – rarer, and sometimes hard to distinguish from 2)
… well, also a fourth: “not possible”, but that’s “not interesting” (unless it’s The Langoliers version or something)
So whether or not meeting herself and having herself teach herself how to get back is feasible… depends on the author.
To quote Professor Farnsworth – “You mustn’t interfere with the past. Don’t do anything that affects anything. Unless it turns out that you were supposed to do it; in which case, for the love of God, don’t not do it! “
As the Orbs seem to have a 4th dimensional component, perhaps time travel is included as a freebie, as warping is mucking about with time/distance in ways that are probably mind boggling
“Ooookaaaay, this could quite possibly be one of the most anticlimactic ends to an epic story arc”
I’m thinking more:
A) Sydney pops out of the ocean around where she found the orbs, starts heading home.
B) Squidwards v1.2 and v1.3 analyse the jumpgate residual signature and beam into the mothership
C) mothership breaks Alari orbit
D) Sydney gets some shivery feeling down her spine, then dismisses it with a quip.
This makes more sense than you think.
This may be NOT Alari homeworld, but some pocket dimension Orbs know where. This doesn’t explain Harem’s extra(s).
Did we agree on if Harem got extra Harem, or there is second set of Harem?
If I remember correctly, there were two camps of thought, both on the same lines of the idea:
* The sudden unexpected destruction of the Alari home world was not possible in the time frame
* The echo feedback was due to an existing version of Harem there already
So, from that:
* Time travel – future – to an era where there were two versions of that version of Harem attempting to exist at once at the same time, and the destruction of Alari was history
* Multiverse – to another universe where another Harem already exists, and the destruction of Alari was already history. The multiverse idea also allows for time travel as well
The latter would mean that there is both an Alari attack force ready to hit Earth as well as a set of Alari ghosts wanting hosts.
we come in peace. shoot to kill!
“I come in peace”
“Yeah and your gonna leave in pieces”
Will that be a way home for Sydney?
This is given Orbs are free-to-use, and not purposefully built artifact for single entity, which failed to unlock their potential before own demise.
As it is, Orbs gain energy, or evolve by killing, that’s rather ominous.
Remember, she got her first point sans murder, I think it might be more of a “heavy use” or “failure is awesome” system of course generation
of the f points we’ve seen Sydney get the first two had nothing to do with combat or killing. the first came for her use of her ppo and shield orbs in the press conference. the second for using the new teleporting function so the orbs seems to give point for using her orbs better.
she got the point here because she was using the orbs a lot and in very inventive ways
What if the orbs are a kind of filter? Earn enough dots to show that you’ve earned enough experience, or the orbs have evolved your mind/though processes enough that you would be able to resist the mental strain generated by meeting the orbs creator(s).
Or maybe a case of the last starfighter…
That’s not a wormhole that’s a jumpgate!
I really wish there was an edit option -_-
At any rate jump gates are WAY safer than wormholes as they essentially just teleport you to your destination when entering, sure you will get shot out on the other side at high velocity, but not at a speed that Sydney’s shield and flight orb cant stop in an instant and jumpgates also transport pretty much instantly and if they are in the process of closing they won’t accept any entry, so no danger of being crushed or otherwise injured by using one, unless you have the destination set to a REALLY bad spot in which case your in for a bad time anyho.
A quick google for Jumpgare mostly brings up the MMO, if it’s something other than that you are talking about feel free to correct me here.
Well, from the quick read about the game, I come to a simple conclusion: jumpgates are wormholes.
Just as, for example, Stargates are wormholes. Wormholes with Tech that makes them actually usable for macroscopic entities, but still wormholes.
eeeh jumpgates in that sense are more artificially stabilized wormholes with implemented safeties, so they’ve got a point
Jumpgates in Babylon 5 were definatly dangerious and not instant transport. They merely transported the entering craft into hyperspace for FTL travel to another gate. If you lost the beacon signal for your target gate and coud not reaquire, you could become lost in hyperspace and die. Being on the event horizon of a jumpgate as it closes or if arificially collapsed was very bad.
As usual, I can’t help but wonder how everyone else back at ARCHON will take the news that Sydney basically has a Stargate. Also, the whole Mach 16 thing. Plus, the orbs are somehow transferring some information directly into her brain to help her understand them. ARC-LIGHT is going to have a field day when Sydney finally returns.
My headcannon is that the entire interface is customised for the person the orbs bonded to.
So the portal only looks like that, because she expected it to look like that.
So if I expected labels on my skill tree of super powerful, life-and-death orb upgrades, I would get them?
But she doesn’t expect labels.
She WANTS labels, but subconsciously, she sees them as enigmatic and mysterious.
I would sure expect labels. I might not expect them in English but I would expect some indication of what the upgrades did. Hell given the technology I would expect a full 3-D holographic AI to greet me and at least attempt to tell me what the hell these things were and what they did.
And, typically, it would end up being Clippy.
“I see you’re trying to open a wormhole. Would you like help with that?”
YES. Yes I’d very much like help with that!
“Yes, I want help with that. You, Clippy, ain’t it. Know anybody better equipped?”
Clippy was never all that helpful for me. More frustrating, actually. Did help me figure out what search terms to use to find the right info online, I guess…
how do we know the people that made the orbs read left to right? what is they go from the right to the left. so that ould not be the last, but the first.
I was about to write the same comment.
I assume since Sydney knew it was a history log, she would also know which was the latest vs earliest entry by the same logic.
I just watched the new Doctor, so the timing of this strip was perfect.
They released a new Capaldi episode? Sweet! He was fun, if a bit grumpy, butt not as grumpy as the Second Doctor :P
I’m not sure if you mean to be facetious, but Scott is definitely talking about the new series with Jodie Whittaker.
No, he regenerated in the Xmas 2017 special.
Never happened
So, Gusticus is a griefer. Who’da thought?
I am always so impressed with the purity of fandom of people who who can suspend disbelief for an alien species that can have two hearts and cheat death by regenerating, but can’t handle the possiblilty that sex and gender identity is not necessarily stable throughout all regenerations. Right, because while lots of planets have a North, and lots of planets have a Scotland, and lots of planets have an Estuary, and lots of planets have a Received Pronunciation, by Rassilon AND Grabthar’s hammer, Gallifrey had better not think girls are anything but icky!
Yup, I’m impressed. Not favorably, mind you. But I am impressed.
No, this is, plain and simple, SJW Feminist bullshit
If they wanted a Time Lady, they could have brought one back, just like they did with The Master, an established one, her name is The Rani
The reason Master became Missy was the same reason he was unable to regenerate: genetic manipulation on the part of the Galifrey High Council (or their Science Council)
Agreed. Also, for most people, their gender is a very central part of their personality. (Consider how many people struggle with it; how many people go through serious surgery to get their ‘correct’ gender, and then imagine what it would be like to suddenly and completely unexpectedly find yourself in a body of the opposite gender.)
And we still have the mystery of who Susan’s parent’s are
And that right could have been a female Time Lady: The Doctor’s Grand Daughter
And every time a Timelord regenerates, their personality changes. Their whole body changes. Gender is but one change in a whole pile of major changes to that person.
And the Doctor rarely wants to change anything about their different bodies in the past. They stick with the same hair style they regenerate with. It was even rare to get an outfit change despite wearing the same costume for years.
And can everyone drop the nonsense about them only doing it now to fit in with political correctness.
There was no such thing as SJW back in the early 80s when it was first discussed to make The Doctor’s personality darker or regenerate into a woman. We have seen some of his darker side. Now we have the other of the two ideas. If you don’t like the show, there is always a button on your remote control that can fix your problem.
And it was dismissed back in the 80’s (if it was even truly discussed) because they knew it was a stupid idea, as stupid as making James Bond black
It’s entirely possible that the reason behind the gender change lies in the way in which he was granted new regenerations. Everyone on Gallifrey contributed one of their regenerations to The Doctor. Some of those who contributed regenerations were women. So, when one of those regenerations got used, guess what?
That whole bollocks about a limited number of regenerations is bollocks
It was the First Doctor that started out as a grumpy old man the second was a much more cheerful chap.
Cereally? Troughton was, in no way or form, a ‘cheerful chap’
Its interesting to learn about the orbs and stuff but I hope this doesn’t start a lost in space saga, I really want her to get back to Earth.
It will take two or three trips before she’s back on Earth.
Astra needed a Baker’s Dozen to return to her home reality.
wouldn’t it be great if Dave and Marion got together for ANOTHER crossover!!… only this time Sydney goes to Astra’s universe and they have to find a way for her to get back to this universe instead?
Yes, but not now. Too soon.
In their first crossover it was Sydney’s Future, and their first meeting.
I’m looking forward to Sydney visiting The Dome also.
“Hi Bob! Hi Bob! Is Astra in? She said I could visit if I’m ever in
(makes air quotes AND winks) “Chicago“.”
Links to this cross over comic please.
Sorry, but as I said, it’s in Sydney’s future, so it hasn’t been drawn yet.
2020 or 2021 maybe?
Probably strip #1000.
4 years from now.
The book in which they appear together is available on Amazon.

I sort of hope she at least goes through one other place on her way home. — This way the space squidwards may not be able to track her to Earth as easily.
Or at least give warning they are on their way by hearing of one of the stops, say the fluffy unicorn planet, getting toasted by these nasties.
And lets just hope the world ending alien apocalypse has no way of FOLLOWING HER BACK TO EARTH!
Considering Sydney is not even in the top 10 of Earth superheroes, that would be extremely stupid for space squids to follow her home.
I don’t know – witht he exception of Maxima, and MAYBE Dabbler, who’s more powerful than Halo by now?
Those always come to earth eventually. That is a trope in itselft.
I always kind of wonder the difference between tropes and memes, does one include the other? exclude?
‘Tropes’ are just the Millennials’ ‘hip’ term for ‘cliché’
‘Memes’ are just the new version of the ‘Motivational Posters’, you know, like that “Hang In There, Kitty” poster
It may be that jumps of that type are untraceable.
