Grrl Power #61 – It’s the one thing they don’t expect.
Well the last few pages have been entirely too sensible, it’s good to see Sydney bring the crazy again. I’ve mentioned before that many of these characters have been floating around in my head for quite some time, so I have a pretty good idea of how they should behave and interact with each other. Maxima acts pretty much how I picture her, though I have to say I’m pleased that she’s not immune to Sydney’s chaos aura. The major exception was Sydney, who I was revising up until the last minute. In fact I have 2 or 3 pages that I penciled from before I stared posting the comic that I totally scrapped, but the Sydney in them wasn’t our Sydney. She had a different job and hairstyle, and I had some ideas about her personality, but it’s safe to say she’s… gotten way crazier since her inception. Heck, even over the course of these last 61 pages. I admit I chuckled quite a bit while I was drawing this page, but I am a little worried that she’s teetering on the edge of being functionally insane.
By the way, it’s a fair bet that Sydney doesn’t know Kung-Fu, she’s doing a pose the thinks she remembers seeing Chun-Li do.
Update: So a few people have requested Sydney’s “Always. Expect. Ninjas.” in shirt form so I made a Cafe Press site with a few options on it. Unfortunately since Cafe Press does on demand printing, the shirts are… well, they’re more than I’d pay for a shirt. I wish I could do them cheaper but I’ve never done anything like this before and I don’t have any idea if I’ll sell more than 5 of the things, even if they were a reasonable price. So if you’re desperate for a shirt, they’re available, in a depressingly unstyled storefront here.
I see little difference between sydney and my fiance and I… In fact, while I am typing this, she is outside chasing a squirel…
She is trying to convince it to register to vote…
your… fiance???
Literally, I LOLed. I can see some of the people I know chasing squirrels to register to vote.
And I thought the Chicago politicians of the “register the headstone” era were dead. They just switched to urban wildlife…. :)
Might I inquire if she is on some kind of pharmaceutical, and if so where I might acquire a sample?
I love this comic. I just wish it was posted daily!
Now where’s the poster tube gonna go?
always announce kung fu intent
oh look, the homestuck fandom has arrived
Next payday, I will buy one of the shirts….all my friends will either be confused or jealous. Hopefully both.
It must be the ninjas that gave the reporter her magically appearing hair tie.
Lack of preparedness will doom us all.
I found out how to perfectly describe Sydney!
Adorable in a loli kind of way. :D
Freaking Sweet Always Expect Ninjas. I am going to use that!!!
Keep the comics coming 1 a day. I need it like I need vitamins
i love the “why u no” face in panel 2 :D
You could probly make an awesome bumper sticker with a variant of that pic. Something like:
[pose] Always. Expect. Ninjas. [reverse pose]
I think it could work.
<—— Always. Expect. Ninjas.
Aaaand…. ordered. Could be a cool costume idea. Full ninja gear, but throw on a black version of this t-shirt. Really mess with peoples heads.
Since they have the design is there a way to get it on a mug(stein!) without stomping on your right to get a share of the price? :) –Gary
Yeah if I remember I’ll see if I can do that through Cafe Press. Check back some time this week and I’ll have it in the store if I can.
Aw man, I wish I could afford one of those T-shirts! Too cool!
Hey Dave B. I had a thought. Start some contests with the t-shirt as a prize. Could be any kind of contest art, trivia, costume etc. Maybe even charge a buck per entry. Could spread the name far and wide.
Frybozu’s idea for the bumper sticker would work great, but you HAVE to have a little ninja hanging from the top over the word Expect. because NINJA.
I love the shirts, would so buy one. But no loving that the womens only comes in XL.. Some women have decent tracks of land to deal with that do NOT fit in a XL t shirts.. anyway they can be ordered larger??
Sorry, I’ve added some more options for women’s T’s in the store. I’m totally new to setting up a Cafe Press Shop.
Since no one has said it yet and I’m a big dork let me just say; if you are always expecting ninjas you’ll never expect… the Spanish Inquisition! Also Dave i really like your comic I very much enjoy Sydney’s zany antics as I’m a fan of those. : )
Thanks! I think the Spanish Inquisition came up a few times, but 162 comments is a lot to scan through. :)
dawww i love sydneys’ face in panel 3!!!!
Hey, how are those shirts selling?
Wow, 15 shirts. Not bad. I need to make a permanent link to it on the page I guess.
Definitely. At 15 shirts / month you’re best off with “on demand” printing for the time being, I guess. If you manage to hit 100 / month there might be better options. :-)
whenever i have an inanimate object that wont work (like a door, or my internet) i now scream ‘WHY U NO UNBUCKLE?’ at it.
the speech bubble in the 3rd panel should really say this “you die now”. That would be a whole lot funnier.
Always expect ninjas. But don’t bother with the Spanish Inquisition. Nobody expects them.
So she is actually trying to pull the “Why u no” face there… which I remember finding when I was reading Gantz when some guy’s face gets exploded by a bridge. Great hilarity.
Always. Expect. Ninjas. Awesome band name for the win!
Sydney is awesome.
I love the little detail of Sydney having her eyes squeezed shut, as she assumes her ‘kung fu’ stance. Setting folks’ minds at rest, in case they think that she might actually possess any real martial arts training.
Tongue-fu yes, Kung-fu no.
Ahaha…..I…I’m quite a lot more like Sydney than I’d like to admit. At least when I’m off my meds, anyway.
Crap, we’ve got the code thingy in the header again.
The funny thing is, she actually can’t be sure. The whole point of ninjas is to be not only stealthy, but unrecognizable. They did prefer people like servants who their targets wouldn’t have to notice, though.
Sydney’s expressions are gold :D.
So are Maxima’s. XP
So is the golden honey badger’s.
Just to say I got me a T-shirt – and I already want more in different colour ways!
