Grrl Power #499 – Inopportunity
This is the power Sydney bought the first time the skill grid came up. Yes, sometimes I plan stuff waaaaaay in advance. Sometimes I’m like “heh heh, that’s a funny joke, I should totally edit this page I’ve already started drawing.” Mostly there’s more planning. Mostly.
This is definitely an inopportune time for Sydney to learn about her new ability though. Obviously she should have spent more time training with her orbs before now, but being a newly minted superheroine has kept her pretty busy. The comedy of errors currently underway will probably reprioritize her training in the future.
As some have pointed out, the situation should never have gotten this far, but this site was supposed to be a “confirm site is abandoned and move on” situation. Not that every plan goes according to plan, but Maxima thought that between Pixel being in charge and Sydney’s shield and other abilities that an away mission would be acceptably low risk and make for good training. There’s just been a confluence of events all of a sudden which is causing the current crisatunity.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. $1 and up, but feel free to contribute as much as you like :)
Holy crap indeed. And NOT because of the teleport ability. This could only end well, right? She still has some small time to grab the shield ball before the stitched lady will come too close, but that would be too easy and I suspect it’s not the way the story will go. At least after this Max will make thoroughly testing all the balls and unlocked modes/abilities first priority (instead of, for example, making her do laps, take apart guns or having live demonstration about supernaturals presence on earth).
Well, we know that Sydney survives, in physically one-piece…
10 bucks says she gets mind-controlled and placed back into arc-whatever as a sleeper agent
Nah, no-one could pull off a convincing imitation of Sydney’s normal behaviour.
That’s actually a great point. There’s no way in hell any “normal” behavior by Sidney would go unnoticed.
“Sydney, are you feeling okay?”
“I’m fine, thank you for asking. And how are you?”
“…Okay, that’s it – we’re getting you checked out immediately!”
+5
Master/Stranger containment for you.
I wish other fiction had Master/Stranger protacals like the PRT did
I didn’t question her ultimate survival, only that right now she found out about a power in a most inconvenient way possible, and without lightning fast reaction she will have to be rescued. Maybe even WITH lightning fast reaction, hypnotism works through the shield for example, and vampires usually have this sort of power.
And I realized this page (and the last too) provides useful piece of information – she is aware of her physical environment even if she has her hologram self out. On last page she was able to hear, and this one confirms visual awareness.
There is still no evidence that Sci-fright is a vamp
something I would like to see is Sydney tanked up on her mega spice curry, and then a vampire trying to take a bite out of her…
Death by spice?
So in that case, the spice would not be life. =)
Do you think Dave is the sort of person to let Sydney find out the hard way that those mega spice curry’s she likes, has the same effect on her powers as Kryptonite has on supperman
I thought french toast was supperman’s kryptonite?
No, French Toast is not a problem for Superman…Kryptonian Toast would be though, because every bit of matter that came from the explosion of Krypton that got flung out into space has turned into Kryptonite. If Superman ate Krpytonian Toast, it would kill him.
French Toast would have no consequences, positive or negative. Indeed, as long as Superman has a reasonably steady source of sunlight, he doesn’t even need to eat food at all..
You didn’t notice that the first person had typoed Superman to supperman and that’s the joke the guy was making about french toast.
You could just call it ‘Kryptoast’.
(Yes I realize I’m beating a dead horse but it’s just SO MUCH FUN)
Supperman’s kryptonite is pickles. (Obscure Akira Toriyama joke.)
haha! i get it!
Actually, Spice is life to Sydney, whose very name is derived from an aspect of Spice.
…Sydney Scoville Jr…
Actually, I think you’ll find that that aspect of the name choice was merely a happy accident.
No, it wouldn’t be death by spice.
The Spice is life & the Water of Life. The Spice is the Worm, the Worm is the Spice. The Spice must flow…
But mentally speaking, Sydney’s not quite intact (her mind tends to frequently go in all sorts of directions). However, that’s her natural state even before she found the Orbs anyway…
:P
Unfortunately, yes…
Whoops. Time to grab the pew pew orb and lay waste. Abandoned ears fire at will, and darn the colateral damage.
Including Pixelicious? o_O
The fur will grow back …… eventually.
Yeah, but what about the tail?
Being burned, hair does not really go back, especially if there’s residual scarring left from the injury. Hair doesn’t grow back out if it has to go through scar tissue.
It is not so much ‘going through’ scar tissue, as the structures which create the hair are actually a part of the skin. If the skin has been damaged, enough to form scar tissue, then the key hair-producing bits will have been destroyed too.
Shield, shield solves everything, just fly into him
Unless you are Hydra (and that big bulky buff brute is a ‘her’)
From the earlobes up, at least.
No longer a “he” or “she”, “it” perhaps, I think “they” is also a possibility…
Well, is that a “he,” a “she”, or an it?
We could just hedge uor bets & refer to that…creature…a contraction of all three words: “Shit.”
No, look at the shadow (and the previous comic where that character appeared). The body is female, just on the XL size of the gender (but possibly not the race).
There is some debate on that, most orc females (if there even are female orcs) don’t normally have tusks that big, or an adam’s apple
This is one situation where all but the most vile of grammer Nazis would accept a singular “they.”
The most vile, of course, are currently awaiting reeducation in Dungeon #6.
Not everything. Harem was unable to teleport through the shield. Does that mean that Sydney will also be unable to teleport with the shield up?
We know she can use the com-ball while keeping her shield up as she was during the big brawl, odds are this means she can in fact teleport while keeping her shield up.. serious potential telefrag for anyone nearby when the shield slams in place though, then again the orbs and their powers do seem designed with a certain amount of user-friendly-ness built in, so they might account for that somehow.
Well, the Comm Orb is not the only function that has been shown to work outside of Sydney’s shield; For instance, during that same battle, Sydney thought that she could use the Lighthook inside the shield, but it only appeared outside instead. I’d bet that the Orbs actually are designed for the user to operate them outside of the shield as appropriate, so I’d also bet that the PPO could also be fired at external targets even with the shield up.
Better hope that orc looking critter is more like Thrall and less like an Ork warboss.
That’s actually the centuries-old bloodmage vampire who constructed the Mani-Killers and survived having MOST of her head cut off…
And I’d also bet that she didn’t even compensate the body’s original owner in a similar fashion, by stitching it’s head to the top of her old body. She just gives me the impression that she doesn’t play fair…
The situation here is a bit like the idea behind the Anime ‘Ghost in the Shell’. Basically, where little more than the brain of the original person is left controlling a different, possibly artificial, body.
if she could build a new body from scratch, odds are she wouldnt make it look like an orc with a clearly miss-matched lower jaw. No odds are she “drafted” one of her blood-donors like the others hanging on the wall… Which does introduce a curious question, did she stick with the orc body because she likes it for aestetic or possibly physical power-reasons? Or was the transplant something of a hail-mary pass and she’s not confident she could survive moving herself over to a body that matches her head better? Questions questions…
The Ghost in the Shell was about a computer program that became significantly advanced enough to be recognized as having it’s own life.
‘The ghost in the shell’ though refers to the soul. If a human mind can be copied and downloaded into an artificial body, does that have the soul? If the original body still lives, are there two souls, one soul, in two different places, just the one soul or no soul in any event? If the copied body does have a soul, why would an AI, likewise downloaded into an artificial body, not have a soul too?
I would personally rate the threat level as “Madboy promoted to Warboss.”
Yay!
I can teleport INTO danger!
… well maybe, just maybe, someone should tell her that her yellow “com-ball” is perfect for scouting ahead to PREVENT jumping into danger.
This might be important since she apparently didn’t just test unknown features amidst a field operation, but totally does not get the concept of stealth, carefull approach, forethought, the dangers of the unknown – everything, in short, that has proven to be life prolonging for a normal person ?
Then again, she clearly isn’t normal.
I wonder how often she needs to wake up in hospital, or face certain lobotomy by some crazy villian who considers narcotics insufficient to shut her up, until she gets it ?
Well, Krona did try to warn her about experimenting with her Orbs in a situation like this…
I’m thinking that this might be the new ability that Sydney “unlocked” with the skill point she earned near the end of the News Demonstration. That was soon after Max pointed out how Sydney learned a lesson in “orb management.”
“So, level up?” Indeed!
Dave stated that this is the ability she purchased.
The symbol only appeared after she made the purchase, but it was ‘greyed out’, but she notices now that with the light be out the symbol is now active.
I thought she purchased the “See Magic Auras”
Thats “just” a build-in mode to switch too, a part of her truesight.
Something she stumbled upon accidentally as well, though, and it probably comes with one of the beads that already were in her skill tree. ;-)
“RED ALERT! ALL POWER TO SHIELDS! BRACE FOR IMPACT!”
Pretty sure Krona is REALLY glad she made that save point earlier on right about now……….
Depends on how much of the party that save point affects. If it’s just for Pixel….
Well, she could still load and tell Sidney not to activate that option…
“Shields up, Mr Chekov”
Now that is an incredibly powerful ability!
Also to pull out the trope: behind you!
Everyone together, now: “CH-CH-CH, AH-AH-AH….”
According to a loading screen tip in the upcoming Friday the 13th: the Game it’s actually “Ki ki ki ma ma ma” (a “Kill for mother” sort of thing). I trust the information is accurate, considering that the game devs have been working together with the creators of the movie franchise.
:activates Ed McMahon mode: I did not know that….
Wasn’t Kill for Mother more the shtick of Norman Bates in Psyco?
It’s also Jason’s thing. Doesn’t the 3rd movie (iirc) start with Jason tracking down the girl who killed his mother? At any rate, when playing as Jason in the aforementioned game, you’ll hear her voice the whole time, telling him what a good boy he is whenever he kills a counselor for example. And as mentioned, the devs have been working with the people who created the franchise.
That reminds me… Need to check if a release date has been set yet. Last I heard it was supposed to be released by the end of this month, I think it was…
Still down as Summer 2017 for single player at the moment on Steam. Going to be interesting to be able to “Ki Ki Ki ma ma ma”
I was thinking of the multiplayer part, which should be getting released soon (Steam just says “Early 2017”). Single player is being released later, hence the “Summer 2017” release date. If memory serves, it’s not going to cost extra however. There’ll be plenty of Ki ki ki ma ma ma though – it happens every time one of Jason’s abilities comes off cooldown, and both he and the counselors hear it.
There are plenty of YouTube videos from the December Beta by Ohmwrecker and H2O Delirious among others, in case anyone wants to check out some gameplay.
Autist is correct. They actually talked about it on a special they did that celebrated 30 years of the franchise. It was on Netflix a few years ago, and shows on the Encore movie channels every so often.
Well, on the bright side, Harem shouldn’t have any trouble finding her now….
… especially not once the screaming starts in earnest… :o
Screaming? I’m hoping for some 100% Genuine Sidney-brand Profanity.
It’s been a while, hasn’t it?
I too miss it so…
You would think somebody may have slipped a censorship chip into her. Maybe she will start singing show tunes in anger. ;)
Oh…I see the fine print now.
She’s exchanged her virtual and actual states then turned of the virtual one.
*off*
Editing would be useful.
She put her medkit back in her belt right? That will be useful later. Hopefully she won’t need it for herself.
It was there just before teleporting and vanished along with her.
Indeed, I also hope she doesn’t need her med kit for herself…She’s recently stated that she doesn’t even know how to use most of it.
O.o
You just teleported into potentially hostile territory! Shields up!
(Can she teleporter while the shield is up? Will an upgrade let her teleport anyone inside her shield with her? Or move the Lightbee/HoloHalo to her previous location when she teleports?
…have you looked over her shoulder?
“Potentially” hostile territory?”
Considering who happens to be strung up right in front of her it would be safe to say that the “potential” is already fulfilled…
:P
…Even without Sydney knowing who happens to be right behind her, she’s got more than enough clues to confirm the danger…
Well, the look on her face is just awesome in the last panel. Total WTF!
Oh, and I just have to say that the February vote incentive picture is just awesome!
Kind of not related to this page but it draws some parallels: Sydney’s orbs, especially considering how she came across them, just scream Asterite. As in, Ecco The Dolphin, Asterite. Does this mean there will eventually be time traveling dolphin super’s?
So cool…
SYDNEY JUST FACEPULLED!!!
Hunh. And here I though Aura-Vision(tm) was the “new power”.
Yeah, that last face? That’s not a scream of joyous discovery, that’s one of realisation that she just ported herself into the same danger Pixelicious was in!!
Fortunately, she’s demonstrated that her first and almost immediate instinct in dangerous situations is to go for the shield; I suspect that she’s past having to consciously call for it.
I would compare that look to that of a coyote wearing rocket-powered roller skates and headed for the edge of a cliff.
Yes scream………they like it when you scream.
This is referred to as “Situationally Appropriate Cowardice™”.
I have used this defense on more than one occasion with a PC of my own who happens to be a rogue…
“Look, I appreciate that you felt betrayed by my leaving you to face the heavily armored fighter with the large melee weapon by yourself but please grant that I did tell you I was going to do that when we first met and stated I don’t do combat!”
Use your inside voice Sydney…Inside Voice.
THIS IS HER INSIDE VOICE!!!
DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN
For your future convenience.
;)
…And awesome sauce!
We can see that Harem is on the move, let’s hope she can get *VORP*hop to Sydney in time, and when she does, she has time to say two words: “Shield! NOW!!”
I’m thinking that in ADDITION to Sydney’s skill tree to debate over, we need to add a list of any unknown grayed out buttons!
{snicker} I’ll leave listing the buttons we don’t know exist, to you. It may take you a while.
If a button is going to be visible at all while non-functional, something about it should give a clue what it’s for and perhaps how to make it functional. Of course, it’s entirely possible that the button in question literally SAYS “Teleport to Lightbee”… unfortunately none of the current cast can read the written language of the folks who made the orbs.
That glyph probably does give a clue as to what it is about, but it is in another language.
Typically glyphs are pictograms, rather than an alphabet type language. In which case, if you have a point of reference, you may be able to figure out what the icons mean.
In this case the glyph looks to me like two triangle-like arrow heads, pointing at each other and overlapping. Now that we know what the button does, that does make sense. Pressing it makes the user teleport to the location of the lightbee. In the process (by virtue of being enveloped by its arrival) the lightbee returns to its home, in the Truesight orb.
One arrow representing the Lightbee returning to its position and the other showing that the user/Truesight orb will translocate to the location of the Lightbee. The overlapping nature helping to emphasise the way it functions.
Perhaps the ‘Embiggener’ has a small circle next to a big one? It may not have been visible to us, but Sydney can make out a list of any icons she can associate with functions of the orbs, see if any have similar easy-to-understand representations. Then she can look at the others, and see if she may be able to infer their meaning too.
Really worried about Sydney, even if she’s got plot armor on. Sciona (and whoever else is with her) subdued Pixel quickly and quietly.
Other than that, Sydney’s turning out to have a very good toolbox of superpowers.
That toolbox could potentially make Sydney the most powerful super.
I thought that Anvil back in page 4 was just joking about Sydney being the “big guns”, but when you look at what Sydney can do already, and she hasn’t even unlocked a quarter of the potential… Bug guns indeed!
Agreed. Not only are most of the individual abilities powerful as is but to have such a variety plus the ability to use two at a time with all their particular features is just fantastic. Sydney is limited only by her imagination and skill, but as a genre-savvy comic book and gaming nerd that means she’s going to exploit them to wazoo.
Indeed…All the way to wazoo & back again..
Under a huge range of different circumstances, Sydney’s new discovery about her orb capabilities would have results and reactions ranging from positive to hilarious / embarassing.
Under THESE particular circumstances ….
I think Harem’s going to be jealous…
Well, likely much shorter range, amount that can be carried unknown, no duplicates; balanced against the ability to scout an area out before the teleport — Harem still has most of the advantages, I’d say.
Still someone having a poor man’s version of your speciality must be a bitch!
Budget Harem?
Which has a number of possible meanings…
Harem shouldn’t have any problems with Halo also being able to teleport. Harem is still unique unto herself…five times over.
Somehow, that doesn’t sound right, but it is an accurate description.
Halo also has a travel time delay for the teleport as the lightbee gets from start to destination. Harem definitely has the advantage on speed.
Maybe not a travel time, but definatly a cooldown, based on how long the lightbee takes to retract.
Add to that the traveltime for getting to the aimed position in the first place and it becomes completly useless as a in-fight abilety. (well, except for retreats, if she can use the teleport while under her shield)
It’s to chunky and slow to be on much use infight, but extremly valuable OOC.
No, it takes time for Sydney to deploy the Lightbee, send it into position, and then activate the translocator, whereas Harem can actually *VORP* faster than Maxi (if she knows what Maxi is planning)
This thought just popped into my head: Can Harem VORP out of her clothes?
I believe so. Not that I can offer any evidence to support that however.
Conversely each time she creates a new body (as per the chart we saw recently, as opposed to whenever she summons an existing body out of storage), she probably duplicates the clothing and equipment she is carrying at the time too.
However, if she cannot, then that means that the new body will always be naked when it is created.
One way, or another, we have a perfectly good non-gratuitous excuse for Harem to end up baring all.
Ah. Sidney just found a solution to the not able to touch stuff problem… well. lets hope she will find a solution to the bloodsmith behind her.
Oh… and let’s hope the bladder hack will hold on for a few more minutes – cant use that snooze button for the fire alarm.
I bet 10 internets that the hack will wane at the most inopportune time… for the villain, and it will be essential to the plot for them escaping
With that big thing behind her, even the 30 minute hack wouldn’t hold when it was one minute in.
Though it may stop tall and ugly in her tracks while she laughs, which will only anger Sydney.
THIS. Please Dave, this!
Sydney over the radio: “Hello, Krona? Good news, I no longer am feeling the need to pee. Bad news, do your talents include dry cleaning?”
I’d say that we’ll soon see how well Sydney reacts under some real (bladder) pressure…
O.o
Sydney better turn around and see what’s behind her….! :O
Do we know if the PPO (I’m self proclaimed hip enough) can blast through her own shield?
I thought maybe the PPO, like the lighthook, worked outside the shield. It did start some distance from the orb.
We don’t know. In the only test we saw of it, she fired first and then grabbed the shield afterwards (which is why the shield was full of dirt – she was too slow getting the shield up)
Do you want to test it out while inside the Bubble with Sydney? o_O
::watches in amusement as Yorp bounds eagerly and happily to the front of the line in bold defiance of convention::
Problem is: if the bubble stops negative light from passing through both ways, then you have just flash-fried Yorp
::contemplates making a horribly racist and stereotypical reference to Batter Fried Bits, then decides not to::
You misspelt “Brits”. :-P
If you can’t fire your tank-slicing, forest fire causing beam of destructive energy whist also having your Maxima-resistant force field up at the same time, you need to have words with the manufacturer of your power orbs.
Besides, the Hentacle works just fine with the shield up, and so does the flight orb and the telepresence orb. And so that only leaves the PPO and the two unknowns as possible interactions with the FF orb.
And speaking of the telepresence orb working with the force field orb, you just telelported into enemy territory so get on that!
Well, to make such a complaint to the manufacturer, wouldn’t Sydney first know who manufactured them & how to contact them? Even if she managed that, they’d probably tell her to consult the User’s Manual…Which Sydney also lacks, as well as the probable language skills necessary to read it..
:D
The help feature is build in. All Halo need do is double click on whichever skill she is interested in, in order to bring up the full details.
Hopefully one of the icons will be a self-explanatory ‘display this in English’ gadget.
Clearly this isn’t the case, as her late discovery of her teleportation ability has just demonstrated.
Hardly, as we have seen the only time she had the skill screen up, and she failed to do a double click.
Of course, my hypothesis is pure speculation, stated as certainty, for comic effect. But the possibility (or something similar, in principle) remains viable.
I don’t think so, Nosurrender.
Syd has made it clear – you MUST provide cred!
Can Sydney castle? As in chess, switch places with her hologram. Because when her physical body has gone from the rooftop in panel 4 there’s still a light trail leading away. And in panel 6 there’s the light trail from the orb in her hand. It’s not exactly castling since the hologram doesn’t appear back on the roof, or at least is not shown that way. But it could continue to be connected to her starting point.
Or maybe she needs to go full metal PPO in a hurry.
She exchanged her actual position for her virtual position.
I suppose a hologram at her start point would be pointless.
Pointless? Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Z!
Being able to teleport away from someone threatening yet leave a telepresence illusion behind would not be entirely pointless if your acting skills were convincing. However, Sydney.
+1
Not pointless. There are a number of advantages to leaving the hologram behind and/or swapping places with it that come easily to mind. Not the least of which is easy communications with Krona and Harem. Sure she has the pipboy, but there will be situations where all the people on the ‘other end’ won’t have the Archon radios.
It’d be the Picard Maneuver, actually.
+1 and a nerdy salute of the ears to you, good sir/madam…
::lowers his long silky ears and raises them again on the three-beat::
That salute makes you look rather like Spock.
And everyone thought that the ‘giant vat of blood’ in Sydney’s imagination was totally unrealistic. https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/2209. Well, just look at the last panel.
Interesting development! Especially since it seems outside the general box of the comm-orb, which has thus far suggested sensors, scanning, and recon. It’s not entirely out of place with those, but it’s also a mobility related option, which I would have filed under the flight orb.
Obviously, there’s more crossover potential than we suspected.
I’m going to start calling it the T-Ball (Telepresence, Truesight, Teleportation).
+1
Which now makes me link Sydney with Mister Terrific (Michael Holt)…
Yeah, I need sleep. :D
There was a late 1960s TV series called Mr. Terrific… imagine a live action Underdog.
You mean this?
There’s one thing I’ve always wondered about Underdog. I’ve only seen the old cartoons, but haven’t seen the movie so I don’t know if it’s explained there, but…Where the hell did he get his Super Energy Pills?
From which we might infer that he creates them. I.e. that is his only super-power. But clearly he needs the ring in order to do that, as they belabour the point that he is helpless without it. So it is a super-power with a ‘needs item to use’ limitation.
Arianna: And Trademarked!
wow, Sydney’s really dialled her language back.
Either that or she hasn’t gotten going yet. Really hoping it’s that; we haven’t seen a good blast of verbal toxic waste from her in a while….
Indeed! Her verbal barrage could probably rival the effect of the PPO…
Usually, Syd has to be angry to start the Tirade Of Effluent Language. Right now, she’s just surprised.
Can someone remind me why Sidney has a bandaid on her nose?
It due to her trying to walk though a not-so-illusionary tree. https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/2172
It’s the latest fashion.
All the cool kids are doing it..
::scampers ff to avoid the tomato abuse hurling his way::
I feel very bad for any villain that manages to capture Sydney. It would be one of those “I’ll pay you to take this POW back! She won’t shut up!” situations.
All kidding aside, “The Ransom of Red Chief” doesn’t reflect reality well. Most likely, they’d sooner kill her.
+1 for the literary reference. Living up to the “classic” part of your handle, I see. ;)
I have a feeling Krona is going to have to hack Sydney’s bladder again momentarily.
DaveB’s under-comic comment about Theseus was more obscure than usual. It took me a Minotaur so to figure it out.
clap. clap. clop. clop. clop.
It took you a Minotaur too?
There’s all sorts of ways to describe the reference, if you just look it up in a Thes(ar)eus.
“It took me a Minotaur so to figure it out.”
That’s a-maze-ing.
So, when will we have a fun, NSFW side comic where Syd is playing with her balls and activates a new node which causes her to grow out of her clothes into a 15 foot stacked Amazon, ala https://www.tetsuko.com/comics/issue01/tko01_cover.html , gets drunk on power and rampages through the building, only to cut to Syd sleepily smiling in her own drool while her other classmates take pictures and Harem is creating a masterful work of art on her face?
First I thought the NSFW part was in “playing with her balls.”
I thought that the level up would just improve her powers, not give her new ones. I think we can safely say she’s a goddess now.
I agree that giving Sydney new powers is a bit of overkill (which is one of the settings on the PPO by the way: ‘kill’ and ‘overkill’). Dave did try to define some limits on her new ability by the events of the previous comic. We find that the Lightbee can not pass through solid objects, so Sydney can not just pop herself into a bank vault. It it limited to the (undefined) range of the flight of her bumbling bee. It also takes time for her to extend the bee to the desired location at about the pace of a brisk walk. She will need testing to determine her carrying capacity during her jumps. At least Dave didn’t go with the Terminator spacetime travel rules that you end up at your destination totally naked.
Note to Author: Sydney still needs a cool sound effect to go with the action. (‘Bamf’, ‘Vorp’, a repeating ‘Whoosh Whoosh’, and ‘VREEEEEE’ accompanied by sparkly lights are already taken)
The fact that it made no sound suggest a rather more aggressive use. No sound means that it is both filing in the void that a departing Sydney make and creating a cavity for her to occupy on arrival. The most logical mechanism being that A Sydney shaped Purton of stuff is travelling in the opposite direction. What happens if HoloHalo is intersecting some more substantial than air when she his the button?
It’s probably just the Sydney-shaped volume of air being “castled” into the Sydney-shaped volume of air at her point of origin at the same instant she moves her Sydney-shaped volume of Sydney. The volume of space at either end is not being displaced by air but merely being instantly emptied & filled with different material, thus there’s (theoretically) no sound.
At least, that would be the “scientific” way to describe a teleportation without sound.
My guess is that then the teleport “button” would be grayed out. I would think that the creators of these balls were safety conscious enough that they would do their best to prevent accidents like that.
Alternatively teleporting always destroy anything intersecting the teleportee, but without any violent reaction. So no big badaboom… Though even without the violent explosion it would still be easy to kill someone or to break open just about anything using the teleport.
Whats not likely is a violent reaction or the user being insta killed.
What’s also interesting is what happens with any air that occupies the space teleported to. It might be destroyed or it might be tranported to the origin point for the teleportation. The later seems plausible as there was no sound of air rushing in to occupy the volume Sydney used to occupy. So either the air form the target location was used to fill it up, or the device somehow created a suitable media to fill out the void.
There’s more, but there was a disturbance in the Steam…
The disturbance in the Steam has been handled (and numerous hostile AI’s dispatched).
The fact that when Sydney teleported the space she entered contained air, and my belief that there is a safety feature built in to prevent the user from ending up teleporting into something solid, makes me wonder just what and how much of it is required to prevent teleportation…
First of all it can’t be to stringent as the volume she teleported into has to contain at least some dust and airborne pollen as well as a slew of viruses and bacteria. What if there had been a mosquito or fly in the target? Would rain be enough to trigger the safety? What about teleporting to or from water, or a vacuum?
The more I think about this the harder it get to imagine just what the rules might be and how they are supposed to work.
Depends on just how ‘solid’ Holo-Halo is: if it is just a hologram image then it has no ‘substance’ at all, but personally feel that it is more of a Sydney-shaped bubble with just enough of a ‘surface tension’ to keep things like dust and rain and insects out and to provide a little bit of sensory-input (her hand still went through the tube in Pixel but she could still ‘feel’ that it went through, if that makes sense)
As you said about the teleport button being greyed out, that may not just be while Holo-Halo is not deployed, but maybe also until it detects that it would be safe for Actual Halo to move into that space
one other thing that teleportation must take into account: conservation of energy. if sydney is moving a large distance horizontally, her velocity versus local ground will be quite different. if she’s moving vertically, her potential energy versus gravity changes. that is, you must put energy into an object to raise it, and lowering takes energy out of it. the energy must come from/ goto somewhere. Why yes, I am a Larry Niven fan.
It depends on if Sydney moves via teleportation or translocation, which, so far, indicates the latter
Technically, it did improve her powers: she can now relocate to wherever Holo-Halo is, it’s not a new power, just an improvement on the Lightbee function
I disagree, farsight and teleportation are clearly diferent powers and no brothers/sisters of the same branch.
Lightbee is not farsight, it’s more of a remote controlled drone: there is not really that much of a difference between Sydney forming an exact duplicate of herself (one that mimics her every action) at a distance and forming herself at that distance
It’s similar to Harem’s ability
It’s the difference between an iron sword and an M-16. Yeah, same concept, but they’re so radically different that we call the gun a new thing.
If by ‘same concept’, you mean ‘kills other people’, then yeah, it’s the ‘same concept’
That is, in fact, what I meant.
Then it’s not the same thing at all: if you had said the difference between an iron sword and a laser sword, or an M-16 and a pulse rifle…
Because compared to a sword, a ‘gun’ is a new thing (for a starter, one is a melee weapon and the other a projectile weapon)
Did we ever see the grayed-out button of which she speaks?

Our author is big on making sure Chekov’s gun is shown being loaded before he fires it :-)
I figure that it’s the new “upgrade” when Sydney spent her skill point at the end of the Press Conference earlier that same day. She originally figured to try using the Comm Orb to see if she could get some “labels” on the display of her skill tree, but she wound up putting that point into the Comm Orb.
Word of Dave above agrees.
btw DaveB, you linking back to the power up selection page… when I compare the two… wow, your art has increased a noticeable amount of colour and shading depth!
Keep up the most excellent work! (also, Sydney’s mouth isn’t quite as run-off as it used to be…)
I think she should avail herself of using her “colorful metaphors” more often…After all, she IS in the military now…
:)
Don’t let Arianna hear you say that.
But Sydney is quite good at it & one should be encouraged to practice their skills. However, Spock’s usage of “color metaphors” was lacking & Kirk had to discourage him from practicing while on duty.
:)
I want to touch the tail, too.
