Grrl Power #48 – The My Little Pony Ringtone Escape Gambit
Way to get that validation there Sydney. I like Max’s subtle method of saying, “Hey, don’t run off, we need to have a little chat.”
BTW I’ve added a Google +1 button and reconfigured the other sharing stuff. Help me test them out with lots of clicks. :D
Hahaha, this page was so funny! I love Maxima’s expressions, I laughed so hard when I saw them, and when I saw the it was the MLP: FiM theme playing XD I love Sydneys sound effects too
That is an awesome ring tone. I have the gummy bear song for mine.
lmao very nice and ya i agree with the “We need more updates” :P don’t push yourself though block and just getting plain annoyed is bad for comic making :). Oh and another comic you should most definatley check out Dave is Walking the Lethe i think you’d really like it man may help you with drawing also cause as someone who loves drawing i always take inspiration from other people tends to help out a lot.
Sydney’s moniker “Halo” gives a little idea of her power, just not enough. Wets the whistle in a way. Unlike some of the others I read. One of them updates 5 days a week, the other 2 times but is monochrome so the coloring is much simpler than yours. I see an obvious manga influence. It almost makes it animated! Can fit in the sound affects etc too.
Remember the tabletop game at the begining? Based on the presance of the “BF” and his cousin/sister, I would guess she is the new player. Perhapse that has some clue to what her powers are?
She could have some leaching ability or something to do with forcefields? A yellow bubble would look like a halo in a comic if it was drawn in two dimentions. That could be why she knew about the sunburns and light getting through. And the object cant leave the bubble?
pffffffffffthahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah YES!
that was my reaction between 4 and 8
well done sir well done.
poor Syd, first yoru embarassed by a crazy ring tone and then you run head long into the glass wall that is your over possessive power, but Max has taken a shine to you so thats a begin plus the the Syd/Max connection
When picking ringtones, the superpowered being should try to pick one with a very low embarassment factor…here we see an example of a ringtone that does NOT convey the mysterious, powerful aura of a superhero or heroine…
I think the exact opposite – a truly powerful and dangerous person would be comfortable with themselves and would not give a flying snerk what others thought of their ringtone. Beside, if someone laughed at them they would just give them the glare of pain beyond all pain – something equivalent to sweating to the oldies with that little troll for weeks on end.
Then again that may just be me – why kill them when you can make them suffer *Mwahahahaaaahaahee*
although the fact she’s running in embarrassment would mean she’s ~not~ comfortable with it… so there’s obviously no danger, right? xD
It is very obvious that something doesn’t want to get left behind, whatever is in that tube is attached to her using cosmic strands of invisible psychic force. I’m willing to bet the artifact in there must be quite interesting, that or she is cursed with having to carry it till she passes it on to some other poor person.
Out as both a Super and My little pony fan!
Yes once you boded with the energy matrix of the ‘artifact’ it doesn’t want to be separated from the host, or buddy. It is funny seeing Sydney go into anger jags and drama jags and one can metamorph into the other. Though it is problematical when super powers are in play. Time for some yoga to enhance her calm. Before we all die.
Sorry Night, everytime I hear “Enhance your calm” or some variation I think of Demolition Man.
And this is bad how?
Maybe she isn’t supposed to put the bad guys into cryofreeze and then boot their head off.
Bonded not ‘boded.’
ahh, the invisible clothesline strikes again! :D
Maybe now we’ll find out what the heck is with the orange tube… or maybe the author will continue keeping us all in suspense…
She already told us all. It’s one of those new-fangled wireless dialysis machines. But it has a limited range so she has to stay close to it or she dies.
have to say that judging from the motion so far the random energy bond between Sydney an the Tubes contents is just around her upper back so i can see right now Sydney floating in mid air in the ‘cat picked up by the scruff’ pose while her tube is caught on the top of a lamp post or something.
+1
Maxima’s face at panel 4? priceless.
I like the panel eight face better, even if it’s partial. It says, “…the fuck!?”
I laughed. Hard.
This one is hilarious on so many levels. Not sure why Maxima’s eyes are so big in the last panel though unless she didn’t expect the effect to be that dramatic.
Her eyes were scaled up to be in proportion to those Muppet-sized eyelashes.
I note that in the last panel the tube is floating a couple of inches above the ground as Sydney’s yanked to a stop. Nice touch!
Thanks, I try and get the important details right. :)
Be prepared. This comic was just linked on one of the prominent brony sites, Equestria Daily.
You’re about to get a lot of traffic.
Also, MLP isn’t just a meme. It’s an actual show.
A GOOD show. I suggest you watch about four episodes of it before you judge.
Bring it! I’m sure a bunch of first time readers will have no idea what’s happening in the last panel there. Maybe I should updated Sydney’s “who’s who” summary to include the tether to the tube contents.
Also, I don’t see a reference to the comic anywhere on ED. Is there a forum I’m missing or something? Oh NM, found it.
Just found your comic today, love it, I laughed so hard on several pages….not really a good thing since I had a skull splitting headache at the time…but TOTALLY worth it! I’m going to go cry now since I think the sinus pressure just popped one of my eyeballs out. But I’ll be laughing as I pop it back it!
I’m kinda wondering at this point…
Since Sidney always wears superhero shirts (or at least when at the comic shop) you had a long list of shirt options she could have had on for this whole escapade. By any chance was there any special reason that you selected the Wonder Woman design?
Weird I wrote a reply to this and the internet goblins must have eaten it. Basically it was just on a whim. I didn’t realize I’d be stuck with drawing it for a year or more. Maybe her next shirt will be a Mrs. Marvel to balance it out.
So I Wiki’ed My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic, and proceeded to wiki each voice actor. Apparently, they work and have worked everywhere, and I mean everywhere, not just kid’s shows…
I love the appropriate application of “blarg”
My Little Pony? This comic is now 20% cooler.
Well, I think she needs to have the Rainbow Dash wallpaper on her phone.
Ooh, or have the TF2 Heavy version of the song as the ringtone!
Well discovered this comic earlier today and read through the archive, and was kind of disappointed that the next button stopped working on this here page. Good job man. Even though we barely saw any real (non-rpg) superhero action it got me hooked already!
WTH? only see 17 comments here and there’s supposed to be 110. Am I missing a link or page button?
Yes, the “Previous Comments” link at the bottom of the comments, clicking on that will take you to the previous page of 100 comments.
The site has 100 comments to a page. just above the comment box is a tiny link >1 Previous Comments<
After 50 top level comments (it doesn’t count the replies to comments) the comments wrap to a new page, presumably to keep the load time reasonable. There’s a “Previous Comments” link right above the comments box that will take you to the previous page.
Okay color me blind looked for it up top and didn’t think to look down. You know what they say about assuming things.
The entire first season is on youtube multiple times over. Some channels have it at 1080p, and those are definitely the ones to watch. I suggest to anyone who enjoyes watching any kind of animation to watch a few episodes. This show is entertaining to so many people that it’s kinda an obligation for fans to suggest other to watch. It’s super-duper high quality in all ways possible, way fun, and appeals to about 99/100 people who watch a few episodes.
“The entire first season is on youtube multiple times over.”
Do the YouTube episodes have lots of views? Is it a YouTube sensation, like “Charlie the Unicorn”?
“…and appeals to about 99/100 people who watch a few episodes.”
No offense, but I find that incredibly hard to believe. People are so diverse, with so many different likes and dislikes, I really doubt ANY show could have that much appeal – let alone an educational cartoon show (no matter how well it was produced or the intended audience). For that matter, I personally know several people who watch very little, if any, television. Some folks don’t like TV shows, period.
Anyway, I’d think that being a Brolie would be similar to being a guy fan of Sailor Moon. By that I mean it’s not something I’d expect very many adult males to openly admit to. In any case, I try not to judge.
A few thoughts on your response… he was saying that each episode has been uploaded from multiple sources, but yes. most episodes have a combined viewing of about 2 million views per episode. So after 5 episodes, Charlie has been dwarfed, that’s not even considering how long Charlie ha been on Youtube compared to MLP:FiM…
Now as to the part where 99/100 people enjoy the show after a few episodes … that’s circular logic. Unless they are forced to watch them, they already like the show enough to watch another episode. So really it should be 100% of the people who continue to watch the show after the first few episodes enjoy it. Or that the show is enjoyable, like most things, if you give them a chance.
As for not admitting it in real life…meh. I haven’t “announced it to the world” but I have told a few friends, who in turn admitted they watch it too…
BLARG! my new favourite word.
I think I gotta get a My Little Pony ringtone and then sneak it onto people’s phones when they leave them unattended.
Did that with my father once. He didn’t know what was going on.
Maxima’s face in the last panel! Great WTF face.
I think this is the highest comment to comic ratio i’ve seen, except for forum affiliated comics.
Getting lots of comments per comic has something to do with the fact there’s a week between posts at the moment, although the Bronie invasion is probably boosting traffic a bit right now.
Well, it’s also the appeal of the comic. Hell, most of us know Sydney, or a reasonable fascimile thereof. Plus there seems to be a fait amout of work put into the background and that always makes a comic better. For example I’m looking forward to finding out why supers are a recent phenomenon in your world.
BTW I just did a reread and caught (for the first time) Sydney’s wrist thingy in eps 3-4 and the ‘alien artifacts’ reference. Now I’m wondering what I caught.
You know a Sydney? That is so cool, because I totally have a huge crush on her. Can you introduce us? Please? I won’t even mind if she doesn’t have superpowers. (I’ll just assume she’s keeping them secret from me in order to protect me from supervillains anyway)
Same here. In fact that is where I got it. Imagine if Supergirl had anger management issues?
It may be a little early yet to tell and I suppose Maxima sees it as her duty to get Sydney to open up and answer some questions. But I think it looks like Maxima is already taking a liking to Sydney.
*pony senses tingling*
*checks this comic for updates*
*enjoys how ponies are taking over all webcomics*
20% cooler.
Maxima would be just the right stablizing influence for Sydney here. To channel her anger to a constructive route instead of just going all spasmotic as we see here. Sydney definitely needs to chill. Remember Bruce Lee an not getting angry when you fight?
I suddenly see some sort of “Quickly as you can, snatch the pebble from my hand.” Moments. Between Max and Syd.
With Dabbler snatching a butt-grope when she tries it.
Hm… So is the resemblance to Groucho Marx in the last panel deliberate, accidental, or just in my head?
I think it’s the eyebrows and glasses, mostly.
Include the cigar, and I believe I see it too.
hm would it be interesting if she throws that thing in the air and she follows after it about 10 or so feet into the air
Nah. She already threw it right before entering the bank, it bounced off the ethereal rubber band and fell down. It’s pretty much as if she is tethered to it, except for the fact that the tether is made out of plot, normal physics apply otherwise. Maybe.
I think that’s exactly how it works – imagine an unbreakable rope between them. Since her tube most likely is much less massive than her, it’s unlikely to lift her off of the ground, even if thrown very hard, it will just stop when it reaches its distance limit. I suppose it could knock her over – Max can probably throw really really hard.
In a way it reminds me of the quantum chrodynamic force–it holds the quarks in a limited package. Only there, if you pull hard enough, the energy just makes new quarks as needed, producing new particles. (Imagine several, or several dozen, Sidneys appearing between her and the tube.) And there seems to be a bit more flexibility.
Oh, and it’s on the order of (at a guess) 10^-20m, not 1-2 meters.
That’s just what I was thinking, of course – the quantum chromodynamic force, only here if you pull hard enough it causes Sydney to emit excess energy in the form of a long string of curse words.
Good point about the products of stretching the envelope.
BTW, did anyone else catch that it’s Joel calling? I’ll bet the bank robbery just hit the news, and he’s frantically trying to find out if she’s still alive. And even if Syd’s phone doesn’t break when it hits the pavement, it’s a cinch she won’t answer right away. Poor Joel.
Y’know, this kind of thing can lead to Plot Complications. How many Drawback Points did Syd get for him?
I think he is just wondering what the hell is taking so long to do lunch and make a bank deposit.
I suppose that’s possible…but not nearly as much fun.
I dunno… If he doesn’t know about the robbery, and finds out she lost the cheque…
Just meandered over here today and I’m loving the comic…can’t wait to find out what happens next now!
And the mini-bio by the side? Genius! I never can keep an entire cast in my head at once!
Thanks, that’s the biggest problem I have with reading webcomics, especially with as many as I try and keep up with. It’s not usually a problem with the main characters, but the mini bio is very helpful for new readers I think, and it’s helpful for reminding people about secondary and tertiary characters when the poke their heads in. I tell you who needs it the most though, is El Goonish Shive. I love the comic but when half the cast can, at any time have a different hairstyle or be either gender or have 5 different forms, just hearing their name isn’t always enough to remind me who they are. Dan is very good about sorting that stuff out in the comments to each comic, but that still requires a lot more from the reader. Luckily I found that frumph had built a plugin that did exactly what I wanted, convert the tags for a comic into basically whatever you wanted, in my case I turned them into little bio badges, and there you go.
:o
A fellow Bunny!
*Hands DaveB a six-pack of unlabelled sodas*
All such comics should have mini bios of the characters in play. It sometimes gets hard to remember them all.
I admit I’ve watched MLP. I don’t know what it is about it. I do like that the main characters are all female. And most of the voices I recognize from other cartoons. Well animated and interesting characters. Well thought out.
On a recent “Wait, wait don’t tell me” had on former pres. Clinton and his topic was….My Little Pony and he had never heard of it but he got all three questions right! Then there was this brief talk about guys, like myself, who are interested in the show. (It’s nice to know I’m not the only one.)
I’m ready for the next page whenever it arrives. I can only imagine the kind of labor goes into it. I never did learn how to color. Just b/w inks for me.
