Grrl Power #408 – Oranges, Golds, and Purples
This is one of my favorite pages I’ve done in a while, just cause I’ve been negligent about slipping in pop-culture references lately. (harder to do during PT, etc) So I thought I’d dump a bunch all in one spot. Hopefully you guys will have fun trying to identify them, but a few notes. Most of these are pulled from comics, movies, etc where there is a definitive version to replicate here. Some of them are gimmies, but a few of them are from books that don’t have movie version yet. So I used either a cover painting as reference or a replica someone made that features high on google image searches, so there’s some slipperiness there. Also, the two handed khopesh at the top is a sword of my own design for a character that might eventually show up in this comic or another one, in a fantasy universe where I have infinite time to draw (or at least write) multiple comics, so don’t kill yourself trying to ID it.
There’s obviously a lot of weapons I could have included in Deus’s collection, but I mostly went for some of the most recognizable ones, with a few more obscure weapons thrown in for good measure.
Imagine if Deus told Sydney he was going to scrap them all for legendary crafting materials. I don’t know what her reaction would be to that since she’s still trying to figure out what he was implying about them being replicas, or if he was messing with her since he knew she would take the bait.
Normally I reserve the double res pages for the Patreon folks, but today’s page will obviously benefit from the extra size if you’re trying to identify the swords, so have at it. I’ll post this as soon as I wake up (Patreon doesn’t have a way to schedule posts yet.) Actually a wallpaper of that panel might be in order, so I may put that up as well if there are requests for it.
In the meantime, here is a numbered version so people don’t have to describe “the sword next to the one on the stand – not on the middle of the pedestal, but the one next to the (incorrectly identified) sword.”
Edit: There’s now a wallpaper sized version over at DeviantArt.
Here’s the link to the new comments highlighter for chrome, and the GitHub link which you can use to install on FireFox via Greasemonkey.
Perhaps, it’s just me but I can’t not see Diana’s (league of legends) Moonsilver blade as “X”
I know 2-4 are Soul Edge, Ryouko’s half of the scissor blade, & Crescent Rose respectively. 9 & 10 are Excalibolg and Zabimaru respectively. 13 is Cloud’s first buster sword. And 19-21 are the Sword of Omens, The Master Sword, & The Power Sword respectively.
No, 21 is DawnBreaker from Skyrim.
No, the DawnBreaker is 22, google both 21 & 22 and you will see it is. I googled the DawnBreaker and it matches up with 22.
Thats not Diana’s sword, at all.
Thats not Diana’s sword, at all.
Don’t quote me on the spelling, as I’m too far behind to look it up right now, but 24 appears to be a ka’leth, which is a Klingon blade. Nearly all of those have to be ‘replicas’ simply because they are from works of fiction that never had a fully functional real version created. After looking at the silhouettes in the numbered image I can easily tell that 3 is a part of the Scissor Blade fro Kill la Kill. I can’t exactly place 4, but I’m positive it is a beam scythe weapon, and no, not one of the ones used by the Death Scythe in Gundam Wing, the one in this image is actually to scale (unlike the Soul Edge, which is definitely NOT to scale, it needs to be half again as long and about a fourth wider, then again the Buster Sword, 13, is short as well, as the original is roughly 5’5″ in length, that one seems closer to 4′) although I can’t say exactly where it is from. I can’t help with any of the others though.
sorry just want to correct you on some things. its not a ka’leth this a bat’leth, but its not just any bat’leth its the sword of kahless. 4 is from the show ruby its a scythe / sniper rifle
RWBY, not Ruby.
ALL CAPS is important, as it’s an acronym. It is pronounced “Ruby”, though.
Good thing maxima is there. I expect, once Sydney sees whatever this guy has in his labs, gonna need maxima to drag her out again.
Sudden random thought. When maxima was testing Sydney’s shield, was it Maxima’s “field” that kept Sydney from going flying when maxima punched her shield as hard as she was?
The shield appears to absorb the energy of the attack, at least when it is sitting/embedded on the ground. I am not sure if a bullet would stop or bounce off.
Foam on the other hand….https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/515
We have not tried hitting it in flight. Maybe Max can grab a telephone pole and try playing whack the Sydney pinata.
I think the question that really needs to be answered is could Max join Heatwave in the Valentine molten metal hot tub? (and can DaveB prove it with pictures)
Lemme see how many anime references I can see in that weapon case…two.
Weapon #4: Crescent Rose from RWBY (love that show so good work Dave)
Weapon #3: Scissor Blade (presumably Ryuko’s) from Kill La Kill.
Love this @DaveB.
My guess is the answer would be no, it was Sydney’s shield negating the force of Maxima’s punch. That is also supported by being able to survive the mini-nuke Maxima set off to prove her point (that is one of my all time favorite scenes in this web comic). If the shield didn’t negate or redirect the energy then everyone inside would have been in bad shape.
One last time, the compilation:
1: Ulaks – Riddick – Chronicles of Riddick
2: Soul Edge – Nightmare – Soul Calibur
3: Red Scissor Blade – Ryuko – Kill La Kill
4: Crescent Rose Sniper Scythe – Ruby – RWBY
5: Stormbringer (or Mournblade) – Elric – Elric Saga (Robert Gould art)
6: Stormbringer (or Mournblade) – Elric – Elric Saga (Michael Whelan art) (but silver blade WTF?)
7: Glaive – Beastmaster – Beastmaster
8: Triple Sword – Talon – The Sword and the Sorcerer
9: Excalibolg – Dokuro – Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan
10: Zabimaru – Renji – Bleach
11: Anduril – Aragorn – Lord of the Rings
12: Green Destiny – various – Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
13: Buster Sword – Cloud – Final Fantasy VII
14: Sting – Bilbo & Frodo – Lord of the Rings
15: Blade of Chaos – Kratos – God of War
16: High Frequency Blade – Raiden – Metal Gear Solid
17: Atlantean Sword – Conan – Conan the Barbarian
18: Excalibur – Arthur – Sword in the Stone
19: Sword of Omens – Lion-o – Thundercats
20: Master Sword – Link – Legend of Zelda
21: Sword of Greyskull – He-Man – He-Man
22: Dawnbreaker – Prince Meridia – Elder Scrolls Skyrim
23: Kandarian Dagger – various – Evil Dead
24: Sword of Kahless – Kahless – Star Trek TNG
Don’t forget X, looks to me like one of those sword’s those pointy eared creeps from “The Hobbit” and “Lord of The Rings’ used
It’d also be ridiculously heavy. I once went through comparing the size of it while Guts holds it up straight to his side and the volume of it, if made entirely of carbon steel, would be roughly 500 pounds.
nevermind that comment, was trying to reply to Six underneath and clicked on the wrong reply link :(
I don’t know the geek reference, but it’s a type of historical sword called a khopesh. Google search suggests that its from Game of Thrones, but that could be wrong.
Egyptian swords for short. But just read DaveB comment to know more about it.
Yes, know what DaveB said, but it still looked like a High Elven Warrior Sword, but a search shows that, while the hilt is similar, the cross-guard and blade are not
It looks similar to Diana’s blade from League of Legends… but the pommel is wrong for it. Otherwise I have no clue.
Only know LoL through Hentai so don’t know what her sword looks like, but the handle slash hilt resembles the High Elven Warrior Sword, but DaveB said he made the sword up for a possible future character (but who knows where he got the inspiration from)
#12 is not Green Destiny
I don’t know who named that piece of sharpened scrap metal “Glaive”, but it certainly isn’t one.
A glaive is a bit like a nagata. Pearl’s polearm is a stylized glaive.
1) Did you mean “naginata”?
2) “glaive” can refer to both a specific type of throwing weapon (Dar’s glaive, above, and The Glaive from Krull, amongst others) and the polearm, so yes, the name is correct… but don’t ask me how the term went from a blade at the end of a stick to a throwing iron…
USA, actually.
The polearm was a historical weapon and the name came from French. It is believed that the name is derived from Latin Gladius, due to the similar length of the blades.
The thrown weapon was invented out of whole cloth by someone for, I think TV, but don’t quote me on that, it has been 15-18 years since I read about it. Apparently the name was pulled out of early D&D by someone trying to remember chakram but did not have any actual descriptions, so when they read glaive they settled/misremembered as that.
I am disappointed that there’s no Squall’s Gunblade for FF VIII
Slight correction to your list:
7) Glaive – Dar – The Beastmaster
13) Buster Sword – Cloud Strife – Final Fantasy VII and FF: Advent Children
21) Sword of Greyskull – He-Man – Masters of the Universe (animated series, not the movie)
Sidney would have slapped you for not getting it right!
There is a disturbing lack of Berserk blades in there. Then again, Dragonslayer is the size of the entire display.
He could have used the one from the Golden Age xD
The Golden Age sword is still massive. Plus, ben dun befo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Nwh8yWh5WU
Now that is a Bastard Sword :P
Geeze, I just watched 4 of their videos. That’s a cool series.
Have always personally wanted to have a forge and smelter, but have no idea how a poor layperson could even go about getting a small smelter, or where to put it on a residential property
The forge isn’t necessarily that expensive… it depends on the type of forge. You can actually make a DIY coal-burning forge for around $50; a commercial one runs $175-$375. The next step up is gas (propane or natural gas); again you can build a DIY model with off-the-shelf parts, or buy a commercial one for $275-$675 (it depends mostly on the number of burners… the more burners you have, the longer piece of stock you can use. For knife making, one or two burners is plenty; for swords, three to five.)
In case you were wondering, there are compelling reasons to use propane instead of coal, one of which is your health. Coal smoke contains various sulfur compounds which can do a real number on your nervous system if you inhale too much of it; eventually the nerve damage can become irreversible.
Another reason is that coal of blacksmithing quality is getting more difficult to obtain, because of various mine closings caused by tougher federal regulations, and the fact that most blacksmithing coal comes from smaller mines that have trouble competing with larger-scale mining operations.
And, of course, it’s simply more economical for a number of reasons, such as you can start work much sooner (you can start working as soon as you turn the forge on, before even allowing it to get up to operating temperature; with coal, you spend a lot of time just tending the fire).
Now, as for all the other equipment (belt grinders, power hammers, etc)? That is when it starts getting expensive. Planishing hammers go for a couple hundred bucks, but the big 500-lb power hammers start at $10,000 and up…
Was more concerned about the council permits and crap (live in the same town as The Fastest Indian, and he had his own forge and smelter back in the 50’s and 60’s)
Have a slight mental problem concerning gas-burners: won’t even use a gas BBQ, and recently the stupid local government has decided to put a crackdown on home open fires so it’s going to be difficult to get coal even to heat your home (and the coal they are selling lately is nasty crap that stinks and doesn’t burn as well)
There IS a third option, an induction forge, if you can afford the electricity. You can even build a small induction forge DIY that draws 50 amps from a 220V washer or dryer outlet to produce 30 kWA, suitable for melting aluminum or steel. Costs about $200 in parts. Unfortunately, anything commercial grade, able to handle billet larger than a knife, runs $800 to $2800.
I would have liked to see a Chainsword from Warhammer 40k.
The absurdity of those things would have gone great with the Replicas-Joke
SydneyXDeus OTP! Hmm?
Seriously, they would be adorable together.
dunno–Deus X Scoville doesn’t have quite the ring…
and “Sydney on top” sounds like a football chant.
but Sydney X Machina does.
They hyphenate it. he becomes Deus X Machina-Scoville and she becomes Sydney Scoville-Machina.
I can’t imagine Ruby would take kindly to someone trying to take Crescent Rose from her.
It’s her baby!
Most powerful thing there is the display itself, takes a Lot of craftsmanship, spells, etc. to fashion something that can hold all of those weapons, some of which are sentient, in one spot.
which ones are difficult to be held?
zabimaru cant do anything without a wielder, and a specific one at that, unless you are a wizard with the right specialization.
i have not seen the anime, but i don’t think excaliboc can move on its own either… unless it is called.
nightmare needs someone to poses.
and then there are other weapons (3, 4, 24, 13 that i know of for sure) that have absolutely nothing special about them.
#4 (Crescent Rose) requires Dust to work right, if I’m not mistaken, plus it can be used as either a scythe or a sniper rifle (it changes shape depending on which mode it’s in, and can also be collapsed pretty small for easy carrying); #13 (the Buster Sword) is ridiculously heavy and unwieldy (a real-life replica was forged for Man At Arms, and the thing was ridiculously hard to use), and thus would require superhuman strength to wield in battle; and #24 (the Sword of Kahless) was famous for being the first ever of its kind, as well as being forged in a volcano from a lock of Kahless’ own hair (which I find hard to believe, but that’s how the legend goes…)
Stormbringer and Mournblade both have demons forged into them, are semi-sentient, and devour souls (Stormbringer likes the souls of its wielder’s friends and loved ones the most).
What’s up with Vale’s shirts? I’ve seen low cut, but those are ridiculous. She’s a quick turn away from a wardrobe malfunction. O.o
Extra strong boob glue is what all professional superheroines and supervillainesses use.
Just don’t ask her to jump :P
Velcro.
That’s gotta hurt!!
Well if they aren’t replicas then I’m REALLY curious how he got his hands on Crescent Rose.
or Dawnbreaker, he’d have to travel to either Nirn or Oblivion to get it.
uhm… extra-dimensional quantum bridge. or some other fancy words.
if they are genuine, then he either had to go to a different universe to get them (in which case he could have an orange power ring) or those things actually on earth and coincidentally some writers made similar ones.
option 3, aliens.
Yeah I suspect his train of thought is that “Replica” implies they’re not functional. which I’m sure they are.
That’s how I interpreted it as well. If that is the case, from a technical perspective Crescent Rose is probably the most impressive weapon up there unless he got the various magic blades enchanted.
Considering that Baltimore Knife & Steel does fully-functional replicas for the Youtube series Man At Arms Reforged (there was a different company that did replicas for the first Man At Arms series; you can find them both at AweMe’s channel), the most likely guess is that yes, they are very expensive but fully-functional re-creations of different fictional blades, and that Deus is either a closet SF/Fantasy/Anime fan or just likes to impress people like us who recognize some if not most or all of those swords. I know that if I had money like his, I’d certainly have a few of my favorite blades (such as Greyswandir from Nine Princes in Amber) made!
(Before anyone asks what such a replica would cost, Baltimore Knife & Steel has stated that they won’t sell any of the replicas they make because of copyright laws. Plus each one would have to be hand-crafted, so you could probably expect to shell out a nice chunk of change for each replica once you found someone willing to make them for you.)
We know that Deus has knowledge of aliens and well enough to state, seemingly authoritatively, the comparative strength of Succubus illusions. As we have no reason to assume that he is using bravado or bluffing, I would be willing to wager Yorpie Snax™ that a number of those weapons are fully genuine.
They might not exactly match the sources we think they do mind. Deus could just have a quirk that he likes to display alien (/magical) artefacts which also happen to look similar to weapons from popular fiction. That way it does just look like a nerds replica collection, to anybody who does not know better. Dabbler’s list may be very different to the ones given above.
The obviously alien ones he will keep locked up, out of sight.
Personally have a few swords as well, not sure if any are ‘prop’ swords (as in, featured in anything) or simply cool looking swords, except for a Klingon curved dagger (very simple design: one piece, flat, long curved edge has one side sharpened and the smaller edge is slightly pointed, with a simple wrap around the middle to hold onto)
Really need to find a place to display them :(
Very difficult to do a search for which Klingon blade have, when Wiki won’t work properly on this machine :(
Would you be referring to any of these or these?
Thank you, but no, eventually found it (but do have a dragon handled knife with a similar looking blade as the Kut’luch)
Correction: it is a Rae Volkoth Simikar, not a Klingon blade
Volkoth Simikar
It is similar but not quite the same
I’d peg blade X as that blade the protagonist in the Blood+ Anime use?
close, but probably wrong size, and the tip is wrong shape.
Plus, it’s an original DaveB creation, with probable influences from other swords :D
Big, flashy swords with super powers are all well and good, but I’ve always been fonder of something simpler and more subtle. What I’m talking about is a cane sword or sword stick – a weapon that can be carried around at all times and yet the villains think you’re unarmed and at their mercy.
Think Zatoichi or his American knock off Blind Fury.
Mind you, walking around with one of those in real life would get you into all sorts of trouble as it would be a concealed weapon.
Unless you have a concealed weapons permit
why even go for the blade hidden in the umbrella/cane, when you can be just as much a threat to attackers with the cane/umbrella itself? look up bartitsu; it was prolly the first real MMA and was the official martial art of one Sherlock Holmes.
Yeah, people tend to ignore just how much pain a ‘simple’ stick can inflict when used with skill
This scene from Bruce Lee demonstrates that perfectly (there is also an edited <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fjh0dLDwv90"shorter version if you don’t want to hear the Philosophy of the Bamboo)
Hopefully DaveB can work his Edit-Fu and fix that second link :(
Maybe I’m just prejudiced in favor of swords. Besides which, using something sharp and pointy will probably put your foe down quickly, especially if you catch them by surprise. Thumping on someone with cane or umbrella seems a brutal and inelegant way to damage someone, meanwhile, and will likely take a few hits at the very least. It’s that much more time for the enemy to hurt you.
Looked at another way though, I suppose we should remember that the sword might well get you charged with murder in the aftermath, while the stick could get you the lesser but still serious charge of assault and battery.
It’s kinda like the difference between a sword… and pretty much every other weapon: the sword has one purpose and one purpose only, to kill
Because as soon as you draw the blade, *that’s* the hand people are looking at. Use that to parry, and pullem el with the scabbard. :-)
I was a little surprised that there was not one Light Sabre [tm] until I remembered that they would be antiques by now, plus the shipping costs would be astronomical.
You’re off your game, Sidney! Always expect ninjas!!!
Wondering if anyone who is skilled in ImageSearch-Fu could help me track down a sword from a bad description? It’s possible it’s not even a well-known type at all, but anyways:
It seems to have a ‘Gorgon’ or snake-woman theme, the handle is a woman’s torso with her snakey head as the pommel (and two snake or hair tendrils come down and cover her breasts), the cross-guard is a pair of snakes facing away and down with their mouths open, the blade has three cutouts in the centre: a diamond towards the tip, a circle in the middle and some strange design that looks like three overlaid ellipses (the ellipses kinda resemble the shape of Vale’s eyes)
Hope someone is able to decipher that and find an image of it online (if one exists that is)
The ellipse design kinda resembles the following
()
()
()
but with the third overlaid where the first two connect
Possibly figured out where Deus got his scar from: he challenged Bruce Lee to a fight, Dan Inosanto sports a smaller, but similar, cross on his forehead in the “Game of Death” movie
What? No Keyblades? Deus fails at nerding forever!
He has more than one display cabinet, he has one just to hold every Keyblade
Deus realllly shouldn’t let anyone see this wall of weapons or tell them about getting revenge on a lot of people. Suddenly, he went from being a tall, muscular, hot guy in a power suit to being a dweeby, sad loser. I see him in his youth as being a pimply-faced, scrawny virgin hunched over a keyboard, fixing up an avatar that he called Lord of Darkness3000. His living well is probably based in part on getting even with all those people who called him names like “dork”, “nerd”, etc.
Maybe if he was 20, but he was taking over foreign countries before then
Maybe you haven’t heard the saying? “The best revenge is living well”
I have heard that saying, actually. But the little heads under the main comic state he’s taking revenge against a lot of people. That seems weirdly specific.
“To all the a**shot jocks who beat me up in school
Now that I’m one that’s cool.
I’m the one that’s cool.
To all the prom queen b**ches thinkin’ they still rule
Now that I’m one that’s cool.
I’m the one that’s cool…”
What, no Rebellion.
“Hmm…. Fine!”
I’m sorry, everyone, but I ship Sydney and Deus. Please don’t kill me.
Shippers UNITE!
But seriously, they would be adorable together, the more we see of Deus the more of a dork he looks like. (in a good way) and I can’t help but feel that him and Sydney would be incredibly entertaining together. (Wouldn’t hurt Sydneys self esteem either)
So Deus is actually Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy. This now my head canon.
Vale’s nose is really pink in that last frame, I know that it’s just the orb glow, but it does look as though she’s been hitting the beach and the port simultaneously and rather hard.
Dawnbringer, the scissor blade from Kill la Kill, Cresent Rose from RWBY, and the sword from Thundercats.
And that’s just what I get.
Go me. I correctly identified 12 of them.
I’m worried, that I may starting of Dues as my spirit animal if he keeps this up for much longer…
its getting harder and harder to be worried about deus. he seems like he has his hearth in the right spot despite his methods
I love that Sydney has her reflexes more under control now. But also how deadpan she is in delivering her line about it.
:-D
I thought I was the only one who kept sword/maces/hammers/various killy things in my inventory long after I’ve found something better…simply cuz they were so hard to get/look cool/match some of my other pieces *grins*
Not even close. There are many who like to collect replicas from shows and movies, and even more who collect working versions. Bladesmithing is in no danger of running out of customers for at least a couple more generations.
Let’s see the guys on Forged in Fire make some of these, especially the fantasy ones. They have already made the Claymore and Khopel.
Wil (Host): Congratulations on reaching the third round. You will go back to you home forges where you will create a fully functional version of this weapon: [ Removes cloth ] The Sword of Omens from Thundercats. The telescoping feature must be present, but it does not have to provide Sight Beyond Sight or call your subjects to you.
OR
Wil (Host): Congratulations on reaching the third round. You will go back to you home forges where you will create a fully functional version of this weapon: [ Removes cloth ] The Sword of Power from He-Man. It does not need to connect with Castle Greyskull to transform the wielder into a mighty man of muscle.
Not for me thanks. I like my upgrades deformity free.
OK HOW THE HELL DID HE KILL LINK RYUKO RUBY LION-O AND JASON THE RED RANGER? Especially Link because the Master Sword isn’t supposed to be able to be wielded by evil
Evil? There seems to be some misunderstanding here. He is Archon’s primary supplier of advanced technology. Meaning he is a major supporter of the good guys! Note how he diligently liaises with Harem, in order to ensure that he is fully able to meet their needs.
Plus do not forget that he liberated an entire country from an evil dictator! And little girls love him for it.
Yep, it’s entirely official.
I love this man.
Ooooh Blades!
Can I touch them?!
PLEEEEEASE!… well except for the Soul Calibur.
Soul Calibur- 2
Kill La Kill – 3
RWBY-Ruby’s Scythe -4
Sword of Thundara -19
YE OLDE Master Sword -20
Either this is a Zodiac Knight’s Lance, or a Gundam miniature lance. -21
Orc style blade -15
Ogre Club -9
Crusher Blade(Berzerk)/Ivy Whip(Soul Calibur) -10
Cloud’s Buster Sword -13
Generic Ninja Dual Blade -24
wait, isn’t that Crescent Rose from RWBY?! is that link’s sword also? don’t you need some sort of copyright claim to do that?
Parody is fair use, and I’m not claiming the swords are my own creation. If one of my characters was using one of the swords on every page, then someone might have a legitimate complaint.
oh cool. But i love the fact you were able to add, in my opinion, one of the coolest scythes/ guns ever made! i love this comic
Having gotten into RWBY since this comic, I am now able to appreciate that fully.
*scythes tail happily*
Yup, those two get on famously, exactly as I expected.
If they aren’t replicas, then hopefully Deus would be smart enough to not leave doom-y artifacts like Soul Edge on public display.
Maybe he has the real ones locked up elsewhere.
On display, within arms reach of him and his bodyguard, or somewhere that he cannot see them? I think he has a method.
“It it looked like a hole roughly cut in the air leaving a blank, flat hole with ragged edges in the shape of a sword – the first thing you’d picture when asked to think of a sword, maybe, a short straight blade with a short straight crossguard. Carl waved it around in a lazy figure eight, as one might wave around a sheet of paper with a single, important word written on it to get an audience to focus on it. It could just be the contrast against his perfectly black, massive armor, but it seemed the weapon lacked both weight and thickness. ‘This is the sword Sword’, he said. ‘I was chosen to guard it because someone thought I’d be the last one to use it. “For whatever Sword cuts it shall be as if it was cut with every sword”, they tell me.’ No one cared to find out what exactly this meant, that day.”
Just a line from a book I’m writing that I’m sharing with you because I imagine it’ll make Deus mad he doesn’t own this sword.
Darned right!
Mind you he probably commissioned it, in the first place.
