Grrl Power #408 – Oranges, Golds, and Purples
This is one of my favorite pages I’ve done in a while, just cause I’ve been negligent about slipping in pop-culture references lately. (harder to do during PT, etc) So I thought I’d dump a bunch all in one spot. Hopefully you guys will have fun trying to identify them, but a few notes. Most of these are pulled from comics, movies, etc where there is a definitive version to replicate here. Some of them are gimmies, but a few of them are from books that don’t have movie version yet. So I used either a cover painting as reference or a replica someone made that features high on google image searches, so there’s some slipperiness there. Also, the two handed khopesh at the top is a sword of my own design for a character that might eventually show up in this comic or another one, in a fantasy universe where I have infinite time to draw (or at least write) multiple comics, so don’t kill yourself trying to ID it.
There’s obviously a lot of weapons I could have included in Deus’s collection, but I mostly went for some of the most recognizable ones, with a few more obscure weapons thrown in for good measure.
Imagine if Deus told Sydney he was going to scrap them all for legendary crafting materials. I don’t know what her reaction would be to that since she’s still trying to figure out what he was implying about them being replicas, or if he was messing with her since he knew she would take the bait.
Normally I reserve the double res pages for the Patreon folks, but today’s page will obviously benefit from the extra size if you’re trying to identify the swords, so have at it. I’ll post this as soon as I wake up (Patreon doesn’t have a way to schedule posts yet.) Actually a wallpaper of that panel might be in order, so I may put that up as well if there are requests for it.
In the meantime, here is a numbered version so people don’t have to describe “the sword next to the one on the stand – not on the middle of the pedestal, but the one next to the (incorrectly identified) sword.”
Edit: There’s now a wallpaper sized version over at DeviantArt.
Here’s the link to the new comments highlighter for chrome, and the GitHub link which you can use to install on FireFox via Greasemonkey.
Am I allowed to be disappointed that Pyramid Head’s Great Knife isn’t represented? Seems like it could have lived on the far left and it could have been the other bookend to the display, with the buster sword on the right.
at first recognizing all the swords on sight i was wondering how many people would tell me “get a life you geek” or something.
strangely…i don’t have that worry AT ALL anymore lol
your not the only one that did that…… i said to my self get a life you nerd/geek you over 40 years old and your knowing the swords of tv shows and games that you used to watch and play on sight, 40 and married and i stilll put my self down sheesh
hehe same as you but am 37 and married lol
do we need a club or a support group at this point? lol
I think this particular “worry” is not a factor from this comments board. After all, the main character IS a major geek.
I notice a lot of you have identified number 24 as a Klingon Bat’leth, but it’s more than that! That is the legendary Sword of Kahless!
Does this mean Deus now runs not only a big corporation and an African country, but the Klingon Empire as well?
Considering Klingons only got the cloaking technology between 2266 and 2269, I’m sure someone would notice if Deus have real Sword of Kahless here. I mean, all those birds of prey searching for it and firing on themselves and on targets on ground …
(Although I suppose some of those weapons would be even LESS likely to be original.)
Vale looks pretty sinister and dangerous here – not to mention sexy as all get out.
Remembering how Sydney took swings at Harem, Dabbler and Math when they startled her, I wonder how Vale would have responded. I suspect Halo wouldn’t have connected, but just how far would Vale have gone in response to the attack?
With Maxima there, probably she would just have blocked it or stepped out of the way, not retaliated.
At first glance here’s what I thought, given (from the full list above) I have never seen the original locations of most of these weapons:
20 – Master Sword
13 – Buster Sword (FFVII)
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 22: Infinity Blade
I knew Infinity Blade stole from a lot of sources, given they had over 100 swords, but I thought a great deal of their inventory was original. I guess a great deal of their inventory is just from things I haven’t seen.
I see:
Soul Edge (far left), Sword of Kahles (center; the pointy Bathlet), Classical Excalibur, Eye of Thundera (Thundercats), propably he-mans Sword.
Clouds/FF7 sword is on the far right. Just left of it I see something suprising – Zabimaru from bleach. While a Bleach sword is not odd, the choice is. Zangetsu is the sword of the protragonist, Zabimaru more or less a disk one boss with “defeat = friendship” turned on. It is neither the biggest, nor most powerfull sword (those titels go to others).
I already compiled a full list on page 1. Took an hour.
I have to admit it would have been funny if Sydney was still running under her older reflexes at the moment, I imagine Vale is so used to popping up like that and getting the initiative on someone that getting auto-smacked by Sydney when she pulled that ‘intimidate by appearing from nowhere’ routine would have been quite a shock for her as well as a valuable learning experience.
Oh! Are the ‘hmmms” from Dune?
Doubt it. When did they work out the vocabulary? But thanks for reminding me of the Count and his Bene Geseret wife. Dune is so awesome.
It would be so awesome if Sydney’s name was actually a “killing word”…
:D
What is the problem with these weapons being called replicas?
Is he implying he purchased the original movie and TV show props or
that those are actual weapons modeled after fictional ones?
Or maybe they are real weapons from all of those places and he has some kind of dimensional gate thing that lets him go to where those places are real?
The ones based on cartoon and video game weapons… Replicas.
Hence my dimensional gate thing. Just because they are fictional places in our universe – and Sydney’s – doesn’t mean they aren’t real in some other.
…Or Deus could have been willing to pay for those “imaginary” weapons to be engineered & constructed as if they were the real, original thing…Fully combat-ready! At that point, it really couldn’t be called a “replica,” could it?
;)
It seems like a question of semantics. Is a “working” replica still a replica? The definition Deus follows or uses seems to say “No”, as in a “replica” would be something like a toy or model but definitely non-functional.
Nice that Crescent Rose is there :D
A bit surprised though that Alastor isn’t there o.O
Ooooh, is number five the Darksword? Not a lot of people have read those books!
Say, DaveB, not to change the subject (this is totally changing the subject) but wasn’t Max going to explain something to Sydney as soon as they could talk in person? I realize morning PT might supercede that, but I’d figure she’d want to get that conversation in ASAP, and, given the buildup, that it would be something you’d want to show us. It would be weird for you to have made such a show of revealing aliens all over the place, have had Max basically indicate “yeah, there’s an explanation, I’ll tell it to you when we’re secure,” and then not show us said explanation.
Guess who didn’t take her meds and the montage skipped over that talk. That’s my guess. She didn’t remember that so we aren’t getting to see it. It will probably be story relevant later.
Why is Vale disapprovingly glowering at Sydney?
My guess is that she disapproves of all this silliness and that Sydney is encouraging Deus’s bad (in her opinion) habits.
Isn’t that what she is doing all the time to everyone? It’s part of her job as a snarky secretary I guess.
This is ONE display, at ONE office. He probably has other types of displays (armor, etc.) at other locations. And something more personal in his home.
or other displays with MORE weapons
My list without looking through the comments (shocked I can identify less than half)
11- Andúril (The Lord of the Rings)
13- Buster Sword (Final Fantasy)
14- Sting (The Lord of the Rings)
19- Sword of Omens (Thundercats)
20- Master Sword (The Legend of Zelda)
24- Sword of Kahless (Star Trek)
Other than Buster Sword [Farthest Middle Left], and Sword of Kahless [Lower Center]. Which ones are those other swords?
Here’s helping grow your list.
Farthest Right: Soul Eater [Soul Calibur]
Third from Right: Crescent Rose [RWBY]
The second from Left: Almost feels like Iike Ivy’s Vine Sword [Soul Calibur]. Although on that I could be wrong.
Fourth from Left: Zabimaru [Bleach]
Oh god I recognize all but 3 of the weapons…. what have I done with my life.
Well, I wouldn’t consider it to be a “wasted” life…
It is very satisfying to recognize many of these. And the rest don’t bother me. I just know I haven’t seen/read that piece of fiction.
And while the fact that he has Crescent Rose is very cool, I have to agree that the scale and a few details are a little off. But worse still, HE CAN’T HAVE CRESCENT ROSE! I WANTS CRESCENT ROSE! I WANTS IT! MY PRESCIOUSESESSSS!!!
Even if there are some scaling issues like someone else said, MUTHA FUCKIN CRESCENT ROSE! This is honestly the last place I expected to find a RWBY reference and it makes me so happy.
Does anyone know which comic is referenced by the girl standing in the rain and in the water with a drink in her hand? It’s one of the inkoutbreak ads below the “What I’m Reading” text box. If you can’t see it, reload the page and it will appear eventually.
Two Guys And Guy.
Thanks for telling me!
Sorry for the late reply, it’s just that I deactivated getting responses, because every time I do that I get 100 E-Mails about comments that don’t concern me. There really should be an option to receive only Mails for responses to ones own comments like in Frivolesque.
Seeing that wall of swords made me think of this:
Imagine if Deus told Sydney he was going to scrap them all for legendary crafting materials. I don’t know what her reaction would be to that since she’s still trying to figure out what he was implying about them being replicas, or if he was messing with her since [b]she[/b] knew she would take the bait.
he
[Although that’d be a twist. If Dues had gender bending powers, and hid in plain sight as a dude. ]

Seriously though. That was a nifty page. Although I feel lame that I only know 6 of the swords there. Still quite a collection. I’m sure Sydney wouldn’t try talking Harem into “borrowing” a few of them for her for comicon.
Whoops!
It’s all good. And awesome job on the series btw,
It seems that Deus has met a worthy opponent in nerddom. No doubt he will soon slouch in front of a fireplace in a high back chair with a wtite cat in his lap, sipping on a martini, chucke, put his hands together and say: “Challenge accepted miss Scoville, challenge accepted”.
“I want to play a game…”
Looks like Vale don’t say much! Unless she’s not much of a talker and will she be easily annoyed by Sydney’s constant prattling?
More Deus and Sydney please!
Dave! I thought Sydney had reprogrammed herself to go for her shield orb in times of surprise! I expected to see a purple-y swoosh!
There was no swoosh, Dave.
Wow neat. I’m actually almost surprised to not see Frostmourne up there. And for that matter his wall could really use Callandor (The Sword that is not a Sword) from the Wheel of Time series.
You beat me to it, sir. I salute your promptitude and quicktivity.
It looks like I’ve just adopted two new words for my vocabulary.
Also I was surprised not to see Frostmourne in there as well. That is one bitchin’ piece of cutlery. Although I guess it would have been difficult to fit in with all those others.
Someone’s been commissioning from Man At Arms.
I’m so happy I’m not the only one who immediately went to MaA. Have an internet, friend.
The Beastmaster! #7 Marc Singer, Rip Torn, John Amos… Tanya Roberts!! What a fun 80’s movie.
Remember Tanya as Sheena?
Oh, hi Vale! Nice to see you again. I’m sensing some attitude. Still mad about that thing with Max?
huh…Crescent Rose…well they would have to be replicas unless he’s secretly a universe jumper that steals other protagonist’s weapons because he knows he’s not one
No Soul Reaver? Disappoint.
Also curious that he went with the Soul Edge from Calibur rather than the original Soul Blade. A nice set of paired swords with a very unique silhouette rather than the ungainly monstrosity Sigfried ended up lugging around..
I’m honestly just happy that RWBY has become prominent enough for Crescent Rose to be in that lineup lol
In our world, all those swords from fantasy stories would have to be replicas, since real ones never existed. In Grrl Power world, all bets are off.
Serious lack of sabers in that collection. Sad.
I’ve seen where a two handed Kopesh was made. It was unusable due to balance. The design does not lend itself to being enlarged to two hand size.
No sword of omens?
Are you kidding? 19.
Disappointed you had clouds sword and not Gut’s Dragonslayer
Not enough room on the display. Or the wall.
I was only able to identify about 6 or 7. Feeling a bit ignorant/culture blind now :p
Dave, I admire your timing on today’s reader quest. Since it is a search for hidden items in a visual media and occurs on this particular date it is literally an “Easter Egg Hunt’.
Enjoy your holiday. As for me, I’ll be hanging with my Peeps.
*makes a cunning plan to steal Dawnbreaker, and the Cresecent Rose.
*contemplates whether or not he has myrtenaster and gambol shroud*
Okay. Deus most be the most evil guy imaginable, or just think he is… but he will always and forever be on my good side. Just for being that much of a geek/nerd.
Such a collection is glorious!
