Grrl Power #408 – Oranges, Golds, and Purples
This is one of my favorite pages I’ve done in a while, just cause I’ve been negligent about slipping in pop-culture references lately. (harder to do during PT, etc) So I thought I’d dump a bunch all in one spot. Hopefully you guys will have fun trying to identify them, but a few notes. Most of these are pulled from comics, movies, etc where there is a definitive version to replicate here. Some of them are gimmies, but a few of them are from books that don’t have movie version yet. So I used either a cover painting as reference or a replica someone made that features high on google image searches, so there’s some slipperiness there. Also, the two handed khopesh at the top is a sword of my own design for a character that might eventually show up in this comic or another one, in a fantasy universe where I have infinite time to draw (or at least write) multiple comics, so don’t kill yourself trying to ID it.
There’s obviously a lot of weapons I could have included in Deus’s collection, but I mostly went for some of the most recognizable ones, with a few more obscure weapons thrown in for good measure.
Imagine if Deus told Sydney he was going to scrap them all for legendary crafting materials. I don’t know what her reaction would be to that since she’s still trying to figure out what he was implying about them being replicas, or if he was messing with her since he knew she would take the bait.
Normally I reserve the double res pages for the Patreon folks, but today’s page will obviously benefit from the extra size if you’re trying to identify the swords, so have at it. I’ll post this as soon as I wake up (Patreon doesn’t have a way to schedule posts yet.) Actually a wallpaper of that panel might be in order, so I may put that up as well if there are requests for it.
In the meantime, here is a numbered version so people don’t have to describe “the sword next to the one on the stand – not on the middle of the pedestal, but the one next to the (incorrectly identified) sword.”
Edit: There’s now a wallpaper sized version over at DeviantArt.
Here’s the link to the new comments highlighter for chrome, and the GitHub link which you can use to install on FireFox via Greasemonkey.
So far so good….
Five minutes is the length of time Max will be able to go without punching him through the floor due to his overeagerness/over the top evil spiel, so it works out.
Though I’m waiting to see if he name drops Venemance by accident/purpose. Then again, is our favorite hate powered villain’s name a secret? Not sure how much audio the TV caught…
“Five minutes is the length of time Max will be able to go without punching him through the floor…”
Well, she did say she was going to head downstairs to catch up with Sydney, she’s just making her own path… :P
I presume that the “room” Sydney means is a sound-insulated, deeply-buried, all-around-padding, “lots of lethal-looking implements” kind of room…The noise wouldn’t disturb the neighbors.
From the point of the room being set up, I’m thinking of the phrase, “Only two shall enter, only one shall exit.” (a la: Thunderdome)
As a side-note: Jeez people! I get to this page only about 6-1/2 hours after it’s posted & there’s already 4 frickin’ pages of comments! How can I find the time to keep up with it all?
V is not powered by hate, but by violence. Now, hate often inspires violence, so Vehemence can promote hate, but he is really after the violence.
That’s a very interesting sound effect that Vale makes
only the best ^-^
It should be Ka-appear.
Hmmm…..
…is number 5 Stormbringer, from Moorcock’s White Wolf novels?
Correction: 5 is Stormbringer; 6 is its brother, Mournblade.
Was the series worth reading?
“Slow head turn”
“Raises eyebrows”
Are you for real?
Um…OK, to the library I go…
New question. What order should I read them in? Internal chronology, or publication order? And what about short stories vs. novelettes vs. novels?
Incidentally, I expect a detailed reply. Not in the sense of “my personal sense of entitlement requires a reply be made to me”, in the sense of “I totally expect someone will nerdgasm all over the question, and possibly fights will break out” :)
I generally recommend publication order unless the author specifies a reading order. It allows you to discover the characters as the author did.
However; given that Moorcock frequently revises (or Lucases?–now there may be a controversial term) stories for subsequent releases, that indicates he might prefer you to read the latest release: in this case, the White Wolf omnibuses of the entire Eternal Champion Sequence in 12 volumes plus the 2 Jerry Cornelius omnibuses and the later additional novels, as modified in the Wikipedia list: ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_Champion#The_Eternal_Champion_Sequence ); OR, if you’re just wanting to read about Elric, that would be volume 5, Elric: The Song of the Black Sword.
…but suit yourself: I’m personally happy with my DAW paperback collection, and the later stuff I’ve picked up and won’t bother updating until after the author dies. That way, I won’t know what I’m missing ’till there is an official final version of everything.
Good reading!
“Arioch! Arioch!…Blood and souls for my lord Arioch!
Sorry–15 vols. EC, 3 vols. JC., my bad.
Nice, thanks. I’ll have to troll the library and see what is available. The more I read about the fictional universe, the more daunting it seems.
I’d say, just start Elric–if you like it, finish it & then sample others–each Champion is in a different world or genre, from Celtic mythology (Corum) to time-travel (Bastable), to pulp adventure (Kane of Mars), to psychedelic superspy, such as Austin Powers could only dream of (Jerry Cornelius).
Most people haven’t read them all, and certainly haven’t read them all at once…
YES.
Very much YES. Also his Eternal Hero series.
Especially the Eternal Champion in his incarnations as Elric, Corum, Dorian Hawkmoon, Oswald Bastable…
…and Jerry Cornelius.
You forgot Erikrose
Ooh, yeah…forgot that one.
Well, the Elric series *is* one of the classics of fantasy literature and the archetype for soul-killing blades…
So, yes. Moorcock is worth reading, in general. Elric in particular.
There’s a reason my Honedge in Pokemon X is named Stormbringer… :P
Let’s see… Cloud’s sword from FF on the right, Sword of Omens(i think its called) from Thunder Cats in the middle bottom bit, Riddick’s stabby bits? (on the left) Ruby Rose’s Scythe/sniper rifle, and Soul Caliber under that… oh and The Flame of the West in the mid above the klingon weapon? That’s all I got, any chance we could get a labeled version for funsies?
You forgot He-man’s sword of power number 21 and where is She-ra’s sword of power? You would think a collection would have both of them in a cross shape. Also with all these weapons not a single katana :P
we really need an edit button number 3 is kill-la-kill’s scissor blade which would be shown with its twin in scissor mode imho :P
The katana is stored on a stand, on a table, in his office. Harem played with it when she visited earlier.
It’s not really an “official” display of a Katana unless the matching Wakazashi (short sword) is included. As the “Samurai Kit,” it’s the “dual-blade badge of office” as much as the Samurai Class actually was an official title for law enforcement too.
Cloud’s sword from FF on the right
Yes, 13 is the Buster Sword from Final Fantasy VII.
Daniel here. Screwball’s scratching his head over all this, so I’m stepping up…
I wonder how many others didn’t notice there’s a link to all the swords numbered for easy reference? No biggy, I’m sure a few people will need this link. Mr DaveB says he’s only numbering them, so we can have fun labeling them…
So Hobo, You’re saying #13 is Cloud from Final Fantasy’s Buster Sword, #19 is the Sword of Omens (We know the “Orb Of Omens” :P actually works, Wonder if Sydney will be tempted to hold the Orb & the sword next time… :P ), I’m guessing you mean #1 is Riddicks knives tho? I know #4 is Ruby Rose’s gun-scythe, #2 is Nightmare’s Soul Edge sword, lovely thing, while the Klingon blade is #24. The Flame Of The West? You mean #17 or #18?
I recognize #10 as a Soul Reaper’s custom sword in the Anime Bleach, while #9 is from another Anime, can’t remember the name, but an angel is sent back in time to prevent some guy stopping all women from ageing by killing him, only to move in & accidentally keep killing him only to revive him after. Also know #3, a part of a scissor blade from Kill La Kill (yet to see that Anime, but looks good) and, I think that’s all I know…
Crescent rose! FTW!
It’s number 4
Actually, it MIGHT be her uncle Wolf’s blade. I forget its name.
No, Crow’s scythe has a different blade and has very different colours. That is Crescent Rose.
I thought it was spelled Qrow?
It is Qrow but most just say Crow.
So is Deus a comic fan? Or something else? I wonder how much of a conversation they just had in ‘hmm hmm hmm hmm’
Sydney might just know more about him now than Maxima
LOL Human Nerdspeak, related to Human gruntspeak, only with their relevant topics?
Let’s start this off:
9) Club from Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan
10) Zabimaru from Bleach
19) Sword of omens (thundercats)
20) Mastersword (Legend of Zelda)
24) Bat’leth (Star Trek)
3) looks like the scissor sword from kill la kill
Hmm, we should probably have some kind of system for organizing guesses and confirmations. Say one reply chain for each? (And by we, I mostly mean y’all)
13 definitely buster sword
11) Looks to be Aragorn’s Sword from LotR RotC (I think it’s called Anduin “Flame of the West” I really need to re-read and re-watch LotR again).
Damn, apparently in my acronym King starts with a ‘C’… /facepalm.
14) Pretty sure that’s Bilbo/Frodo’s sword ‘Sting’.
24 is technically the Sword of Kahless, the first bat’leth
I don’t know #2 but there was another comic where Darth Vader was fighting a guy wielding it and he stabbed it in the eye with his lightsaber.
I THINK (don’t know, never played it) it’s the sword carried by a bad guy (?Pyramid Head?) in Silent Hill.
Daniel here. #2 is Nightmare’s Soul Edge, the true villain from the Soul Edge & Soul Caliber games. The sword itself is an evil entity which possesses it’s wielder, takes a form most suitable for their fighting style, then sets about feeding on souls to power itself up basically. Darth Vader WAS in Soul Caliber 4 I think it was, comic was probably based off that…
Daniel here. I’m gonna throw what I know in the ring, as well as admit to those I don’t know… :P
#1 Riddick’s knives? –
#2 Nightmare’s Soul Edge – Soul Caliber
#3 Scissor Blade – kill La Kill
#4 “Crescent Rose” I think it’s called – RWBY
#5 ???
#6 ???
#7 ???
#8 ???
#9 spiked club – Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan
#10 Renji’s Soul Reaper sword – Bleach (Anime, not fluid :P )
#11 ???
#12 ???
#13 Cloud’s Buster Sword – Final Fantasy 7
#14 ???
#15 ???
#16 ???
#17 ???
#18 An Excalibur from 1 of the King Arthur movies?
#19 Sword Of Omens – Thundercats (both generations)
#20 Master Sword – Legend Of Zelda
#21 He-Man’s Power Sword – He-Man & The Masters Of The Universe
#22 ???
#23 ???
#24 Klingon blade – Star Trek
How’d I do? :P
I don’t understand the joke in the minicomic. How are swords related to taking revenge? Or does he mean he’s taking revenge on everyone, by living comfortably?
Old proverb: “Living well is the best revenge”. He wasn’t speaking about the swords specifically, but in general about his lifestyle.
Living well is the best revenge.
Also “outliving your enemies” tops pretty high on the “Best Revenge” list too…With a weapons display like that (& what that interview/flashback revealed), Deus has a distinct advantage to make sure that his enemies have shorter lifespans than himself.
Many pages early in the comic were devoted to Sydney’s “The List” of people that pissed her off. It was quite funny. It implied she would get revenge at some point.
#4 is definitely Crescent Rose from RWBY
Rainbow World Brony Yearly?
“Rwby”
Ruby
weiss
blake
yang
names of the 4 main characters.
google it, watch it, fall in love with it.
And then cry. A lot.
And then put on a dress and dance like a master.
“An Arc always keeps his word. Now, do you want to stand there and laugh at me? Or do you want to dance?”
Hahaha I can’t stop watching it, I actually have it or the sound track running full time when i’m playing on my computer.
That’s what I thought at first but unless it’s partly unfolded I don’t think so. The folded up version is much smaller than that (it fits at the small of Ruby’s back).
Nevermind, I just realized looking at the silhouette version that it’s completely unfolded into the scythe mode (missed the handle on the page version).
Still it’s a bit small for the unfolded version, the blade of the scythe is about as long as Ruby’s arm span.
All these swords have scale issues- The Buster sword by itself ought to be about twice the size it is.
According DaveB they are just further away XD
Deus is a weeb, too? xD
I beg your pardon…Deus is wealthy enough that he can commission actual combat-ready weapons, even for those that might be considered “purely fictional” even in the Grrl-verse.
He wouldn’t have to put up with mere “replicas” for purely display purposes…I’d bet that every one of those could be pulled out of the case & be effective in use (presuming that the wielder already has specific training to make that “use” as effective as possible).
Heck, Deus is wealthy enough he could pay people to enchant his swords to do relatively the same things they do in their respective universes of origin.
For that purpose, money is actually less effective than having the right contacts…It’s not the size of the bank account, it’s the size of his rolodex that matters. Granted, at his level of wealth & influence, the search for the right contacts may be a bit easier than it would be for you or me, for example.
Number 3 would be one of the scizor blades of kill la kill, 4 would be Crescent Rose from RWBY, 9 would be… excalibulg? form bokuratsu tenshi dokuro-chan, and I think 10 is Zabimaru from Bleach. 13 is from a final fantasy (FFVII?) I think. Not really sure about the others.
Love the swords.
Thundercats Eye of Thundera (Sword of Omens)
He-Man’s Sword
Final Fantasy sword
I think one of those swords is the one from Lord of the Rings, and another is the one from the Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe…
Pretty sure one is also Conan’s sword.
The one one to the left of the middle is Nasril (or maybe Andril) from Lord of the Rings, I think
The center one looks like most depictions of Excalibur
The katana looks sort of like the Highlander Sword.
The one to the right of the Thundercats sword looks like the Master Sword from Zelda.
There’s the Krull blade…
I think the one on the leftmost side is the Soul Caliber sword
One of the swords on the right side near the Final Fantasy sword is, I think, Gandalf’s sword (third from the right)
The one RIGHT over the middle sword is Stormbringer
MAYBE the tiny sword on the left is Sting?
Pretty sure the red sword next to the soul caliber sword is Dante’s sword.
Is that stick-like thing Yoda’s walking stick?
Sorta surprised he doesnt have a working light saber in there while he’s at it.
Not sure about hte name of the two little hook things, or the scythe, or the curved sword on the top, or the sword with the holes in it, or the sword that looks like a bat, or the one to the right of that.
Scythe is Crescent Rose from RWBY. It’s a web animation done by Rooster teeth and is very very awesome. Seriously, go watch it!
Looks like #4 is the only ‘replica’ because that weapon is missing the Sniper rifle stock with room for the insertable clips for regular vs explosive rounds that makes up handle of the scythe. It’s also between 1/2 and 1/3 scale. Ruby has to be really strong to wield it. The actual being 4’wide on the blade and close to 8′ long, assuming Ruby is 5′ tall.
….should i be impressed or scared you know that much detail about this? :P
As someone who 3D models replicas of video game characters for fun, I can say that he certainly could have learned those stats from that or something similar.
RWBY fans are pretty dedicated, it’s one of those things that, if you’ve taken the time and effort to track it down and watch the whole thing, you love it.
I’m choosing to go with impressed, here’s an image to compare:
https://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y537/Tatsutetsu/RWBY%20Crescent%20Rose/Reference_zps3a0cab6b.jpg
Very impressed.
Actually, Cresecent Rose is atleast 5 inches wide or more likely 5.5 given that the “Muzzle slab” is roughly the same width as the blades, and the gun in question is a .50 caliber.
Without muzzle brakes.
I’m pretty sure world class strongmen wouldn’t be able to wield that thing
There’s a reason she uses it to ‘tank fly’.
If you were referring to #7 as the krull blade you are wrong but close. It’s the throwing blade from Beastmaster. Right decade wrong movie.
Well done. I knew that one would be tougher to ID.
Really? I spotted it instantly. But then… I’m that guy.
Yeah, I don’t see ‘The Glaive’ there (that’s what they called it, in Krull, nevermind that that’s already the name of a completely different weapon), which was shaped like five twisted switchblades glued together at the base. Horribly impractical weapon, but it looked cool.
The Glaive appeared on an earlier page though. Click here to see it.
And now we also know what shop Deus got his Sword of Omens replica from.
Who says it is a replica? Of course, if it is here, Third Earth will not be defended.
I think the Katana (#16) is Blade’s sword from the movies (darkened blade, straight hilt). It’s definitely not “Highlander”, which had a bright blade and an ivory handle.
#17 is Conan ‘s sword from the Schwarzenegger movies.
well I know he-man she-ra cloud’s sword excalibur zabimaru the throwing thing from krull conan kill la kill soul caliber bat’leth sword of omens
Hmm, let’s see:
19 is the Sword of Omens, from Thundercats
21 is the Sword of Grayskull, from He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
22 is Dawnbreaker, from The Elder Scrolls
13 is the Buster Sword, from one of the Final Fantasies
11 is Anduril
24 is a Klingon Bat’leth
Ah! I was trying to figure out the one with the star in the crossguard. I knew that I’d seen it (my Skyrim “Paladin” wields it), but I couldn’t quite place it.
22 is Dawnbreaker from Skyrim.
1 Riddick’s Blades
2 Soul Calibur
3 Kill la Kill Scissor Sword
4 Ruby’s Sniper Scythe
8 Triple Sword?
9 Dokuro’s Bat
10 Zabimaru (Renji’s Zanpato)
13 Zack’s/Cloud’s Buster Sword
15 Kratos’s Sword
19 Sword off Omens
20 Hyrulian Master Sword
21 Sword of Greyskull
24 Klingon Bat’leth
#2 Is Soul EDGE. Soul Calibur is a completely different sword from the same series.
Daniel here. Soul EDGE is the main bad guy, possessing it’s wielder & taking a form most suitable for their fighting style, while Soul CALIBUR was made using fragments of Soul Edge that were purified & forged into a sword designed to destroy Soul Edge. This particular Soul Edge is Nightmare’s version, the most iconic of all it’s forms…
7 is the most surprising to me. Forget the name, but from the movie Beastmaster. And that makes me feel very, very old.
7) The Dark Blade (BeastMaster)
Let’s see how many I can name:
1: (Isn’t that a weapon from BuffyTVS?)

19: Sword of Omens (Thundercats)
20: Master Sword (Legend of Zelda)
21:
22:
23:
24: Klingon Traditional weapon (not sure on the actual name)
A bunch of them look really familiar, but I can’t place my finger on where they are from.
After reading some comments, let me correct a few and add a few.
1: Riddick’s Blades (Chronicles of Riddick)
2: Nightmare’s Soul Edge (Soul Calibur)
3: Scissor Blade (Kill La Kill)

23:
24: Klingon Bat’leth (Star Trek:TNG)
I will continue to update.
Congratulations people…we did it. Here’s the list. A couple are not 100% confirmed.
1: Riddick’s Blades (Chronicles of Riddick)
2: Nightmare’s Soul Edge (Soul Calibur)
3: Scissor Blade (Kill La Kill)

X: An original, to be used later.
How’d we do DaveB?
All the ones that don’t have ??? beside them I confirmed via Google Image search, comparing both silhouettes and colors as well as seeing how many people were saying the same thing. The two that are ??? are because I can’t fully confirm them.
The Triple Sword would need to be visible from another angle but the colors and general shape are correct.
There are SOOOOOO many famous black handled katanas in both history and fiction that without seeing the details on the hilt and blade I can’t confirm it, so I just picked one from a place that wasn’t represented yet that would be nifty, and it was a toss up between the Hatori Hanzo and Sephiroth’s Masamune, but since the Masamune is 8 feet long, I went with the Hatori Hanzo.
Also, before anyone gets on me about the names of some of them:
24: I didn’t put Sword of Kahless because I can’t confirm that it is indeed that specific blade. However, knowing Deus, it probably is.
3: I did not put a possessor to it because I couldn’t remember at the time the character names.
7: I don’t know it’s actual name and couldn’t find it online.
10: Don’t watch Bleach, don’t care who own it enough to look it up.
11: I just forgot to put down Aragorn when I posted.
12: Don’t know it’s owner
14: Again, just forgot to put down Frodo/Bilbo Baggins
18: Pick a person…use them. They have probably wielded it. Seriously, every RPG out there has an Excalibur.
19,20,21: Because you already know who owns that sword.
22: Because I don’t know what you named your character in the Elder Scrolls game you played.
23: Because I don’t know who used it, or owned it.
24: SeH rep ghoS wItI’nISmo’ je yIra’ SabtaHbogh Daq in order to tetlh, rIn Hoch, legh chenmoH neH ‘arghbej jIH vaj vaj tetlh ghewmey rur SoH laH HIchop SoH.
Re 24: I don’t particularly like bug bites, no.
the katane is not only handled but also black bladed. that could mean ichigo’s zangetzu but that one has a different tsuba.
the closest I came with image searches seems to be raidens sword from metal gear rising revengeance
It looks like Blade’s sword from the movies, but I won’t swear to it. Pretty sure that had a darkened blade. It’s also straighter than most Katana.
I’m thinking the black katana is most likely Snake-Eyes sword from GI JOE
Less confidently, it could be Kane’s sword from Highlander 3, or…wasn’t there a black katana in Sword Art?
For all you know, that black katana could be mine…
But no, I use a black ninja-to.
:)
You would be correct, 16 is most definitely Raiden’s High Frequency blade. While the combination of black handle and black blade is telling, the more telling part is the details on the handle.
https://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/metalgear/images/f/fb/MGR-HighFrequencyBlade.png/revision/latest?cb=20140115003514
A picture of Raiden’s sword, where you can see the one small, one long, three small oval pattern that is in the comic as well.
But this sword is black. Raiden’s sword wasn’t black, was it? It’s been a while since i played it, but i was fairly certain that it’s not black. Unless it was sheathed, but then it would be huge block instead of a blade
Hm, I thought 7) is a mek’leth, from Star Trek, but I am very likely incorrect there.
Completely different weapon shape. I double checked.
The Bat’leth is specifically the Sword of Kahless – the First Bat’leth. It’s more angular, and has the triangle pointy bit in the middle, while pretty much any other standard bat’leth is fully curvacious and has nothing between the inner points.
https://www.geocities.ws/ktesh_kag/swordofkahless.gif
Also, TIL: Geocities is still a thing. I haven’t seen anything from there since the 90’s.
X is awfully similar to Diana’s sword (League of Legends)
I thought 16 was Blades Sword from the movie?
I’m realizing the detail on #16 is too small to see well enough to identify. I didn’t include many katanas cause they generally all look really similar. I had considered Blade’s sword and Michonne’s O-Katana, but without being able to examine them really up close they’re too hard to tell apart from any other katana.
#16 is Raiden’s sword from Metal Gear Revengence
Pretty sure Deus is the kinda guy who’d have a separate display exclusively for katanas.
while it is quite small ( raiden’s sword has no wrappings on the handle but instead the handle itself is oddly shaped. this drawing is to small to really see that difference.) most of the guesses seem to be “kind of dark katana I remember”.
most importantly the hattori hanzo katana, ichigos zangetsu, and snake eye’s sword all have a tsuba (hand guard) which this one lacks. it has instead a cleary visible part between grip and blade without any obvious function.
the sword of the daywalker blade which seems to have been the last popular guess is kompletely straight and double edged. both qualities the displayed sword lacks.
Ichigo’s Tensa Zangetsu (his Bankai, which is the only time it’s shaped like a katana) also has a chain dangling from the pommel.
If you wanted to make a katana wall and be able to make them all look different, you’d basically need that image to be ultra detailed so that every part was fully visible. There are some blades that are almost 100% identical aside from very minute details. For instance, the Murasame and Masamune are exactly the same sword in history, but in games they can be drastically different.
Also, other swords for a second wall if you so wish…
1: Brave Fencer Musashi’s Lumina
2: FFVIII’s Squall’s Gunblade
3: FFVII’s Sephiroth’s Masamune (remember, it’s over 8 feet long)
4: Devil May Cry’s Dante’s Rebellion
5: Berserk’s Gut’s Dragonslayer
6: Evangelion’s Unit 01’s Progressive Knife (why? Because it’d just be a really big dagger)
7: Lunar: Silver Star Story’s Althena’s Sword
8: Warcraft’s Frostmourne
9: Warcraft’s Ashbringer
10: Warcraft’s Warglaives of Azzinoth
That should get you started.
If 18 is Excalibur I’m seriously underwhelmed. I always thought it would be bigger, and shinier. Flashing green.
I know that number X is specifically stated to be an original design, and when it comes to originality, you have to cut content creators some slack because “there is nothing new under the sun” but it still heavily resembles Diana’s Crescent blade from League of Legends
I’ve never played LoL, just some DOTA2, but both swords are obviously variants of the Egyptian Khopesh.
Ah, the Kopesh. Bronze age, but a great sword.
For those not familiar with them, here’s a YouTube review of a authentic reproduction.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFTAdzHbp2I
#5 and #6 can’t be Stormbringer and Mournblade. Look here:
https://www.raven-armoury.co.uk/stormbringer.htm
Both swords look the same.
Yeah, I was worried about that. Googling the two swords turns up different images. :/
That’s because the swords arent from a comic or a movie. The description in the Elric saga obviously had a lot of room for interpretation, the sure parts were the runes, the black color and the fact that they look alike. Elric images from different artists showed very different versions of Stormbringer, all true to the books but not similar to each other. The Raven Armoury version looks like the version shown on a lot of book covers, and since they got Moorcock’s approval it’s probably the “correct” version. But other versions would still be acceptable as long as they look alike.
https://www.tritonworks.com/content/images/rb_stormbringer_sheathed.JPG
it’s Stormbringer.
If you look at my link at the Raven Armoury you will see that their (official) Stormbringer and Mournblade look about the same, which is true to the books.
Also, I hope that these are not meant to be the originals. The Black Swords can kill even Gods and consume their powers, and aren’t weapons but demons in the shape of a sword. At the end of the “Elric” cycle, Stormbringer transformed itself in an humanoid demon bringing the evil in the newly created world. Stormbringer cannot be controlled by anyone known.
Pretty sure 6 is Mournblade from Moorcock’s White Wolf/Eternal Champions books.
#6 is not Souldrinker, but I loved those swords. They have good flavor text.
I updated it after further looking into it. 6 is now Mournblade.
Stormbringer and Mournblade are brother swords, they should look similar. #6 is the shape, but I would expect the blades to be black like #5. There are multiple interpretations of the soul drinkers, I don’t think there is an official version. But if you have Stormbringer and Mourningblade, they should look the same.
the domonic loking things i believe is from “soul calibur”
scizor blade
“crescent rose”
weird weapon from Startreck.
… ogres mace?
zangetsu.
6/25 … i need to waste more time on the internet!
reading other comments, i found i used wrong name for the last weapon, but at least got the right show.
I’m surprised he didn’t get the Glaive from Krull, or maybe some of the bandits’ axes.
The Glaive already appeared in an earlier strip.
Okay, let’s see how many I can name:
1) No clue
2) Nope
3) error 404
4) Crescent Rose from RWBY!
5) I’m beginning to think this’ll be a short list
.
11) Anduril – Lord of the Rings*
.
13) Buster Sword – Final Fantasy
.
18) Excalibur – From the film
19) Sword of Omens – Thunder Cats
.
21) Power Sword – He-Man (had to look it up to figure out what it was called)
24) Bat’leth – Star Trek
*I had to refresh my memory of what the swords from the LOTR/Hobbit films looked like. The only one that really stuck in my mind was Sting.
And there’s Sting at #14 (face palm)
Well, we know some of them are replicas (or at least, non-replica swords he had made himself, and not the original props) if only because I’m not aware of an original prop for Dawnbreaker or the Sword of Omens, for example. Even so, nice collection.
DaveB, if the Deus Sword collection changes, id like to see a Zambatsu from Kenshin.
rofl, he has a non-replica of Dokuro-chan’s Excalibolg? I.e. the club that doesn’t kill you no matter how many pieces you’re torn into? XD Note that only the Manga describes it like that though, but that still makes it canon.
Other than that I only recognized the Buster Sword, Bleach and Zelda, so thanks to everyone who participates in finding out about the other references.
Nothing from Warcraft up there? I know its not got the best reputation these days but given the franchise’s impact over the last 20 years I figure it should have a place up there. Gorehowl and Frostmoure are probably the most obvious choices, but there’s arguments for others.
Well, Gorehowl is not a sword, and as for Frostmourne, given its powers, I wouldn’t be surprised if Deus had that not on a stand, but in a lab, being analysed, and analysed, and analysed… x)
Well neither is the Crescent Rose, Beastmaster’s glaive, Riddick’s daggers, the Bat’leth, or Excalibolg, but they all ended up on the display.

Deus has been busy jumping dimensions to have all these pretties.
Note, I only named the ones I was faily sure of… a ? after a name means I am only about 50-80% sure.
Sword of Kahless I believe and yes, you’re the first one to get that specific one right.
So about Deus’ “Replicas. Yesss…” comment. My guess would be he either meant these are the actual swords used in the movies, or these are the original weapons (some possibly magical) that the movie/game/other media version was based on. There might be some overlap between the two.
Though him saying it to mess with Sydney is a fun thought as well.
He may simply be saying “Replicas? Those are all functional weapons.” Most replicas (esp used for cosplay) are not actual swords, and would be completely ineffectual if you tried to use them in combat.
At first glance, I thought the sword on the top was from Blood+. but upon closer inspection, it’s not.
Personally, I would have added a few more:
1. Frostmourne
2. War glaives of Azzinoth
3. A real life working Lightsaber
I’d also add:
– Power/Star Swords (Blackstar)
– Icingdeath & Twinkle (Forgotten Realms)
– Dragonzord Flute (Power Rangers)
– Daywalker Sword (Blade)
– UV-Arc (Blade Trinity)
– Spear of Destiny (Bible)
– Gimli’s Axe (LOTR)
Gimli’s Axe (LOTR) – But he broke it on the ring right at the start of the movie. That didn’t stop him from picking up another from the elve’s armory (presumably), but it does kind of make it a non special weapon.
Woundhealer (all the others get destroyed)
This is what I think
1: Riddick’s knives
2: Nightmare’s Soul Edge (Soul Calibur)
3: Scissor Blade (Kill La Kill)
4: Ruby’s Sniper Scythe (RWBY)
9: Excalabolg (Dokuro chan)
10: something from bleach?
11: Narsil/Anduril (LOTR)
13: Caliburn (Blue exorcist)
14: Sting (LOTR)
15: Kratos’s Blade of Chaos (God of War)
17: Conan’s sword
18: Excalibur (Traditional)
19: Sword of Omens (Thundercats)
20: Master Sword (Legend of Zelda)
22: Dawnbreaker (the elder scrolls)
23: that sacrificial dagger (the evil dead I think, not sure)
24: Klingon Traditional weapon (not sure on the actual name)
Stealing my post, eh? Already got the full list above though.
I didn’t steal… these are all the ones i could figure myself. I didn’t even read any of the posts beforehand.
Probably should have just replied to your post though tbh.
The Sword of Kahless, effing Excalibur of Bat’leths, did not get forged from a lock of Kahless’s own hair dipped in the molten lava flowing from the caldera of Kri’stak and quenched in the lake of Lusor for use in founding the Klingon Empire merely to be recorded as ‘Klingon Traditional Weapon (name unknown)’.
Maxima’s dialog in the last panel….
In five minutes she has what?
Take Sydney to a meeting?
(Shouldn’t that be Ms Scofield or Halo?)
Also…
About sending data to her wristthingie, a Heads Up Display would have been more useful.
Maxima is saying that she’s giving Deus five minutes, then she’s going to follow Sydney down to see the rebreather.
Five minutes is as long as Max can spend with Deus without punching him, I think.
Or making out with him. They definitely need to get a room.
Of course, if Syd and Vale leave them alone together, they may make do with the one they’re in.
But Sydney has a wrist computer, and she doesn’t have a heads up display.
Besides, battery life is not information you need always in your sight, just something you need to be able to check with ease (such as on your wrist)
On her glasses? Wasn’t she wearing some kind of eye protection goggles earlier? She could use something with altitude and air speed display while flying, so why not also O2 and CO2 levels?
Also…
What is to stop the interface with the wrist com from the rebreather to hack into ARC communications?
O2 levels are also not ‘need to know right NOW’ levels of important. A simple beep is enough to as alarm low low levels.
What are you talking about with your second comment? Deus is saying the rebreather can interface with her Arc issued wrist computer. What’s to stop that connection from hacking arc comms? The same thing that stops a wireless thermometer from hacking your computer.
The thing is already connected to the web, and already has protections. A connection with a simple meter isn’t going to add anything to that
“What is to stop the interface with the wrist com from the rebreather to hack into ARC communications?”
One word (or name, really): Leon.
You can bet he’s the one who would have engineered the interface security for pretty much everything they have.
It’s pretty pointless to ask about the security on the wireless interface when Machina Industries are probably also making those same wrist communicators. How else would they know – and casually reveal that they know – how to hook up with it. Plus, it’s so far a one-way connection (simplex).
Asking if you can hack into the wireless interface is probably a better question, and I’d say it would be very difficult with inverse square law, proper hacktraps, ddos protection, and route filters.
Hmm.
I think 12. is the Sword of Destiny from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon . . .
Panel 5’s dialogue is hella awkward
Nope. 5 am dyslexia
How much dyslexia can fun be, right?
;)
5) looks like a daedric longsword from oblivion (there may well be a specific legendary one ?) but I’m not 100%
16) I think is Zangetsu in ultimate/third form (Ichigos sword from Bleach)
24) is probably specifically the sword of Kahless, the first bat’leth, rather than just a standard one.
I LOVE the disign of the X one.
I was going to call it warscythe. but then I notice that the sharp edge is mostly looking up. So it is more a kilaj.
By the way, I knew tecnically all of them but only recogniced 18
I was wondering where all that stuff from Man At Arms show ends up….
16 is neither Zangetsu nor Bill’s sword
https://killbill.wikia.com/wiki/Bill's_sword
https://www.trueswords.com/ichigo-bankai-sword-inspired-anime-tensa-zangetsu-p-2556.html
Got a better match? I welcome better matches.
Not positive, but I think it might be Snake-Eye’s katana from GI Joe.
Can we get a weigh-in, DaveB?
why does nearly every suggestion for the katana have 1. a shining blade; this one is the same colour as its grip 2. a tsuba which this blade lacks ?
all other weapons are drawn very similar to the originals. Why would this one have such large differences?
It’s Raiden’s High Frequency Blade from Metal Gear Rising, the oval details in the handle give it away.
https://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/metalgear/images/f/fb/MGR-HighFrequencyBlade.png/revision/latest?cb=20140115003514
while I agree on the weapon, the angle in your link makes it seem much winder and shorter than the blade depicted by dave
raidens sword from metal gear rising revengeance seems like a good bet;
