Grrl Power #356 – Ring tone deaf
Sydney’s not really all that offended by Maxima’s ringtone, but she knows an opportunity to guilt someone when she sees it. Not that Lieutenant Colonels usually let themselves be guilted into stuff by recruits, but it’s clear to anyone that Sydney is a valuable asset to the team and Max is okay with bringing her around to a more military way of thinking gradually.
Being reminded of the need for extra gear for Sydney is not unlike the minigun incident. Max does still occasionally have trouble remembering the squishiness of humans.
For anyone unfamiliar with Maxima’s ringtone. I first heard that on Dr. Demento on the radio when I was in high school. I will resist explaining what “radio” is to the young’uns since I know it still exists, but as a medium I think it’s safe to say it is past it’s heyday.
We haven’t seen that blond haired guy in a while. I would link his last appearance, (which was also his first appearance) but the quality of the art is… less good. I also need to name him so he can appear in the Who’s Who.
Here’s the link to the new comments highlighter for chrome, and the GitHub link which you can use to install on FireFox via Greasemonkey.
Sydney has a really penetrating, powerful, look, in the final panel. I love it!
?
She’s only staring into the reader’s Spark, that’s all…
Ahh, so the intensity just reflects the spark between us. Well, she can see through the 4th wall, so everything beyond that must be destiny!
*warm glow*
Sure you are not confusing Sydney with Frosted Douche? o_O
You don’t think Sydney has a badass look (with a mischievous twist to it), in the final panel?
Mischievous sure, but not a ‘penetrating or powerful’ look
So powerful she opened the door the wrong way! In all previous openings, that door opens to the outside of the comic shop, not the inside!
Well, I just found an exception to what I just said. When Olivia entered the shop on page 303 /archive 1674, she also pushed the door open into the shop. However, I think I should maintain that that is still an error, because if the door is supposed to be able to open both ways, it should have the same kind of push-handle on both sides of the door, and that has never been the case.
Just imagine someone who has found a way of turning every human into the physical equivalent of Maxima? Would he be bad or good? Forcing it on everyone is bad, but many would like it. I would love such an ambivalent “villain”. I would certainly like to have the same characteristics as Maxima and yet till be me. It would change our future…
It could also lead to the extinction of the human race.
One of those characteristics is ‘female’. A 100% female population will have difficulty reproducing. Even artificial options will be far harder to attempt, given her radically different biochemistry (blue blood amongst other things) and resistance to harm (even at the cellular level)!
Gaunt did say equivalent. I don’t think they meant all characteristics, just most.
I didn’t say they would turn into Maxima, I said everyone would get the same characteristics as she has. The mutation only not her entire genome. It wouldn’t be making clones of Maxima just her powers. I should have written it more precisely since I wanted to avoid that conclusion.
You mean, turn everyone gold? Midas tried that, didn’t turn out too well for his kids :(
Don’t worry, I know what you meant. I just like to play with any loopholes that have an interesting twist.
A world full of people who can lob nukes at will? That did not sound like too fun a place to live. Sure the individuals will (probably) survive the blasts. But little of the landscape will. And there are all too many disaffected people in the world, likely to throw a tantrum.
So it would be fun flying and doing the other things Maxima can do. But not sure how long it would last. Although, if you could find an isolated corner, without too many angsty teens or folks suffering from depression, or holding grudges against society, then life would be… interesting.
The loop holes would make the story. That is where you can play with the concept. All those unintended consequences that are ripe with such an all encompassing idea. Done for good of course. And sincerely too not that it helps things one bit.
To para-quote from the third Jurassic Park film, “some of the worse things ever done were done for sincere reasons”.
You named him Brad in the issue where he was harassing Syd about ordering a comic that was unavailable
Oh yeah, well spotted!
I fully intend to have that played at my funeral. I don’t take life to seriously and I want my funeral to be a paa-a-a-rty and EVERYONE TO HAVE FUN!!!!!!!
The last funeral I went to, the guy went out to always look on the bright side of life. Personally I am opting for a tear-jerker.
Considering that later comics shows maximas ringtone as the hammer theme from donkey Kong, I’m curious when it got changed
meant to post this as it’s own post lol
This is her ringtone specifically for Sydney. Her priority ringtone is the hammer theme. I can only guess that she has two different phone numbers for people to call depending on how much of an emergency the situation is.
Oh, man. That ringtone totally had me laughing out loud. That’s actually pretty difficult for me. Give yourself a cookie from me.
Is Dave ok?
Why, what have you heard?
I heard I’m starting to shake lack drug addict on withdraws from lack of a new grrlpower comic
Oh wait you just published one
… I don’t get it. That is an awesome ringtone!
The hell does Sydney think she is trying to guilt over it? FOR SHAME SYDNEY. That ringtone is not a thing to be guilty about.
You know, it took me a minute to get the joke…
You see, that last time I even thought about getting a cell phone
you had one ringtone for when it went off, not programmable ones that
can be set for more people specifically…
Not that I don’t know about them obviously or I couldn’t be writing this,
just that it’s not something I think about often…
OMG, Napoleon XIV!! I had this vinyl single when I was a kid. On the B-side was the same song, only backwards.
My mom literally has this ringtone for her mom, who can be spacey at times. I cracked up so hard when I saw this page!
Dittos on the Dr. Demento, and the high school years. (Early ’80s, I think.) This was one of the dozen or so songs from Dr.D that I put on a cassette, so I could take it to school (and elsewhere). I miss my old Walkman, crossing town on a ten-speed, stuff like that…
Huh. Even for alerting her to Sydney, I would not have expected that song from Maxima. I will no be downright disappointed if I don’t see someone singing or listening to some Weird Al by the end of this.
That ringtone could’ve been worse.
“Fish heads, fish heads, roly-poly fish heads…”
I bet that’s stuck in your head now.
How are Joel and Maxima so close together on her contacts list that she can accidentally call the wrong one?
I think if I was going to go come up with personal ringtone for my contacts my “first” consideration would be what happens when they call me when I’m in front of them. . .
that song fits sydney to a t.
Considering that later comics shows maximas ringtone as the hammer theme from donkey Kong, I’m curious when it got changed
I’m so making that my ringtone.
I love the classic version too, but kinda like to imagine Maxima might have the Neuroticfish version of the song. It goes harder and keeps the madness.
