Grrl Power #33 – So a sailor and three nuns were going to the bank…
Yes she made a sailor blush, hah hah I’m so clever.
Oh and the scale is a bit off in panel 2. She can get a bit further away from them than that, probably about twice what it shows there. Sequential art is a tougher than it looks and I tend to zoom in a bit much when I draw. Good panel layout is really kind of an art form in and of itself. Oh well, I’m learnin’.
reminds me of doc from RedVsBlue
“2nd worst throw ever”
I believe the quality of the throw was somewhat influenced by the artifacts’ “proximity rule”.
Doc? I can’t say that Doc never said that in the show, given my memory, but you’re probably thinking of Wash. “Second worst throw ever. Of all time.” Though Doc WAS the one who made said throw. Probably what you meant, but it was kinda unclear.
Every time I see it I get a kick out of the Wonder Woman T-shirt.
So not only does it prevent her from leaving it, it also prevents it from leaving her!
What happens if she drops it down a cliff/well/etc? Would it just hover in mid air?
Yup!
Does it hover, or just pull Sydney down after it?
She weight a lot more than the tube and contents, so unless she loses her balance (very likely), the tube will hover.
Nice. :D
It took me a second before I got the joke (which is disgraceful, considering I read out the string of epithets out loud to my best friend last night). Poor Sydney, nothing’s going her way right now.
did it hit the sailor in the face?
Nope. Just stopped dead in the air and fell to the ground right in front of him.
Oh ok it just looks like it hit him in the cheek. Although you did say he was blushing so maybe that is what is causing him to look like it hit him.
My thoughts exactly
“Swearing so hard you could make a sailor blush” is an old saying, based on the older saying of “Cuss like a sailor.”
Good panel/page layout is the hardest part of comic making!! If you can get that down, you can draw stick figures (a la XKCD) and it’ll still be a great comic…in my opinion anyway. I mean…if the writing’s good.
Sorry, I don’t get the joke… :(
Oh wait… Lol…
oh, my, goodness. ….She IS an impressive swearer.
at first i thought they were staring because of the tube falling dead, then i read the commentary. I find it extra funny that one nun is smiling.
And the other one reached for the cross for protection.
I… don’t think that’s a… smile.
More like the confident and determined look of a fighter just about to tackle his worst enemy ever.
The senior Nun, looks impressed, by cursing without using the name of God, or any real profanity.
I was going to ask why the sailor isn’t congratulating her, but then i remembered what she said, and realized that she is on a space pirate level of cursing. Also, i believe she’s about to get a stern talking to.
sterotypes coming in 3 2 1 throws like a little girl but swears like a sailor
Well she actually has a decent throwing arm on her. Her accuracy is a bit more in question but I was trying to show that the tube just kind of stopped in mid-air and dropped.
Girl embarrassed the Sailor. LOL
I kinda like the 90 degree trajectory arc when it dropped. For some reason it tickled me. :)
love the third nun’s pokerface~!
You should take her out of that panel entirely and just show the tube coming to an abrupt halt. you make the point sufficiently in the previous frame that she threw it.
Looks like the tube is bouncing off the panel border. But at least it didn’t break the fourth wall!
Seeing nuns in full habits makes me giggle. Not a criticism, since that gag couldn’t have been told any other way, but the anachronism still amuses me. I don’t know the percentages, but many American nuns don’t wear the habit anymore, a fact that pisses off the Catholic church to no end.
I admit I have a “Hollywood education” with a lot of things outside of my immediate experience, and I don’t image that wikipedia goes in to details like that. I dunno how often you see sailors walking around in their Donald Ducks these days either. Maybe in port towns every now and then.
Usually, the uniform is worn by Individuals on a Naval Base(its mandatory when on duty), but its not uncommon for a Sailor to wear his Whites while doing other stuff. Especially if they are on on shore from there ship for a couple of hours before they have to go back. Common when Docked at a new location.
Which is kind of funny really, because the habit was originally chosen because it was plain and simple and more or less matched what other people were wearing at the time. Basically it was chosen so that it wouldn’t stand out. Now however it has the exact opposite effect, and so if they want to remain true to the original purpose of the habit, they should be changing it to be a pair of sweatpants and a sweater or something similar. Personally I don’t know that I’ve -ever- seen a nun in a habit in person, but I don’t exactly hang around abbeys either. I’m sure there are still plenty out there though.
I have known a lot of nuns in my life, some even in my family, and i have only sean the habit for holy days or special ocasions.
It is a holy day. The day of “Holy crap sister, did you hear what came out of that girl’s mouth?”
Ouch. :D
That one made my day! :)
i saw one in a grey-blue habit walking along the beach just last week, actually.
i almost said hi…. then went back to my drawing….
I have, but only because I went to a Catholic elementary school.
Perhaps not in the US, but over here in Eastern (and much of Western) Europe they can be seen like this all the time. It’s actually mandatory and/or self-imposed. I’ve only seen one ONCE wearing something more casual, and she was in her 20s during a particularly hot day (even then, it was something similar).
here on my country on the other hand is quite common to see nuns dressed like that.
first a sailor now nuns i sense a buring at thestake coming
I’m sorry, but the Nun on the right looks way too happy.
Most likely a a look of determination to drive away the demons befouling Syds Vocabulary. “REPENT YOU VILE TEMPTRESS! REPENT!”
She’s supposed to look older and consternated. You know no one who draws teens to thirty somethings knows how to draw old people? Yeah… I hope to improve on that quickly.
To me it looks like she’s about to draw her ruler. And a bar of soap. =P
Wait wait wait. Am I the only one who noticed the author refer to the tube as “them” in the notes section? Ominous. o.o
If you read the cast page you’ll know more, but not necessary.
Probably space hamsters. Uh, immortal space hamsters… hopefully.
Go for the eyes, Boo! GO FOR THE EYES!!! *squeak*
“Any last words?”
“Just two: Kiss, kiss.”
HAH!!!!, I miss that show :(
wouldn’t adding a unit to the range scale not solve the scaling problem ?? like |——-| 5m :)
Did the sailor or the nuns notice the poster tube defy the laws of physics?
I think they were too stunned with the Class-6 hurricane of invective that is Sydney Scoville.:D
Why am i strangely attracted to the sailor.
So not only does Sydney have a high tolerance to spicy food she can make Sailors blush and nuns BSOD!?
How many super powers does she have?
She can start jukeboxes without money like TheFonz…
However…..
The machine always selects songs by “Captain and Tenille”.
ik this is a rlly stupid question, but wht does BSOD mean?
Blue Screen of Death. He’s saying that they “crashed” like a computer when they heard her tirade.
Heh eheh eh I love this!
I think a good way to get the “tube dropping out of mid air” with out worrying about scale would be to just show the speed lines, the angle and the tube. Though another more interesting way to explain it would be that the distance they are allowed to separate is affected by her emotions, with “extreme stress” as the point in which the powers activate themselves, like a self-defense mechanism.
That why MC Hammer said we have to pray just to make it today.
Sydney should be the mentor of X-Pletive from Fusion,if he could curse like that there will be no limit to his powers
Not to be too picky – that guy better not be a US Navy sailor – from top (stripe on the white hat) to bottom (white shoes and straight-legged trousers that end above the shoetops?), he’s all set up for an amazing amount of extra duty, fines and other Unpleasant Things is he’s spotted by the Shore Patrol…
Yeah I probably should have looked that up. It’s funny what people notice when you throw something out there for general consumption. Let’s just say… he lost his actual outfit after a heavy night drinking, bought a costume one, and is hoping that’s good enough to get him back to his quarters where he’s got another one? That’s probably a poor plan but chances are we won’t be seeing this guy again.
Heh.
well, he COULD be a Midshipman, as they have a black stripe around the top of their dog-bowl like that. however, the trousers and shoes belong to an OFFICER’s dress whites not an enlisted man’s… and his blouse shouldn’t have anything on the left breast pocket area either… though that’s not TECHNICALLY correct, if for some reason, he was a Master-At-Arms, or maybe the Command Career Counselor or such, he could have the badge there, but that seems embroidered, not as an add-on metal badge that those positions have, ya’ know?!
DaveB… nah, during that alleged “night of heavy drinking” there was an officer in even worse state of inebriation than him and they just kinda swapped parts of their uniforms… it’s all good…
Well basically the lesson here is to take 5 minutes and google stuff before I stick it in the comic. Details like that are important to me, they’re the kind of thing I tend to complain about in other media. “In S03E12 of ST:TNG, Data’s chest hatch opens to the left but in S06E02 it opens to the right!”
tht sailor is ummm…….. hes not ignorin her. hmmmm, guess swearin like a sailor isnt as bad as its made out 2 b. lol and the NUNS!!!!! my uncles catholic. iK if he knew nuns heard somethin like tht (nowhere NEAR tht bad) he’d have a heart attack. lol
Thank, you, this strip made me laugh the hardest I have in weeks! You’ve got a good sense of funny, but this one ratcheted it up to 11! Of course going through the archives makes it easier to get the flow of humor, but I’ve got your RSS feed in my reader now. Keep it up!
PS it helps that my niece’s son is in the Navy, and I can picture that kid in the panels as the sailor. Especially since he’s pretty innocent, too… :-)
Yeah people tend to think of the armed services as being full of grizzled, worldly types but really they’re full of all types.
Suggestion:
In Panel_2 our view of her body seems to hint that we are (almost) directly in front of her – just a tad to her LEFT. If we imagine that she’s throwing it just a bit-off-of-center to her RIGHT, we can suggest this with a subtle use of forced perspective, by taking the speed-lines of the tube’s trajectory & changing them as follows:
– near her hand, the 2 lines are seen as very thin (almost hairline-thin), & almost touching.
– by the time they reach the 90-degree angle, they are slightly thicker, & almost as far apart as the thickness of the tube.
– when traveling downward (after the 90-degree angle), the lines do NOT change in either thickness or their distance from each other.
Meanwhile, if you think that Panel_2 must be re-drawn entirely (& not just the speed-lines), perhaps her body might be made to match the body’s position in Panel_1 more closely – which would make us feel as though only a tiny fraction of time separates Panel_1 from Panel_2.
I hope these suggestions might allow you to make something you like better, with a (hopefully) minimal re-design. Speaking just for myself, though, I hope you NEVER revise it, because then you’ll have more time to continue this awesome story.
:)
P.S.:
I’m TOTALLY LOVING her “Viking Berserker Juggernaut”-Level of cussing! If I had a friend like that, I’d make a habit of pissing her off on a regular basis, just so I could take notes with a tape recorder!

Why yes, I -do- have some suicidal tendencies…
…how could you tell…?
Hey, got here via Girls with Slingshots guest comic and doing an archive binge. Loving it so far. This one reminded me of the ‘Some days you can’t get rid of a bomb’ scene in the Adam West Batman movie and I was wondering if that was intentional? Also loving the mystery and slow reveal with the Tube of Awesome.
I wasn’t channeling it specifically, but that is a great gag.
Don’t know if someone did that one.
Ever heard the expression: A mouth that would make a sailor blush.
We got it here.
Random thought…
If that thing is distance-locked to her… then how come it stops and then falls straight down?
I presume that means it isn’t locked to some central locus-point inside her (or else it would curve slightly toward her as it fell toward ground-level), but perhaps distance-locked to the outer periphery of her body? … Or perhaps a vertical anchor-line up the middle of her body? …
… OR maybe it is only horizontally distance-locked parallel to the surface of the Earth, or to her line of sight…. meaning that it can freely move in the vertical plane (or non-euclidean equivalent) without limit, but stops if moved horizontally away from her?
You have got to love a girl, who can make a sailor blush!
I’m sad that we don’t really see that tongue of hers in later fics.
It’s good when she goes on a good tear.
It is enough to make your eyes weep.
That hand of fears in making me wince. Seriously owww.
Hers, but still owwww.
