Grrl Power #325 – Four out of ten hut
Maxima doesn’t have super hearing, but the team has decided that her hearing is pretty good at least.
This page was just the natural progression from the previous one. I rarely have anyone doing anything particularly military in the comic, but I figure if a Lieutenant and a Lt. Colonel walk into a room full of recruits, there should be some reaction. That reaction might be subdued if the Lt. Colonel is in street clothes (which will be explained) but Peggy’s still an officer.
Also while writing this page I learned that “ten hut” is just drill-sergeant-ese for “attention” I didn’t know that. Harem is sort of splitting the difference.
In panel 7, Peggy’s original comment to Sydney was “Stop sticking your chest out like you’re modeling your first training bra”, but my wife convinced me the first date thing was more universal. Though I suppose a lot of that depends on when you started dating, and who you were on a date with.
So A-kon was the usual good times. I didn’t get any commissions unfortunately as I didn’t have the forethought to print out any reference sheets, but I went to some of the webcomic panels and better yet got to talk some webcomic shop with some folks, primarily The Devil’s Panties and the writer of Spinnerette. I think it helped me formulate some plans regarding the book. I may make a separate post about that. Also I got a chance to sit down and have some dinner with some readers. Here’s some photographic evidence taken with my crappy Galaxy S5 camera. I’m in the back in the green shirt, continuing my streak of being chronically bad about not smiling in pictures. I’m not sure what’s up with that, but it was good times. I didn’t spoil much, mostly we recommended animes, talked about other webcomics, the usual nerd stuff.

I realize that this is sorta late and may have already been said, but shouldn’t Halo’s orbs have had an upgrade? after all, she’s used her orbs a good deal and that battle took up quite a lot of real-time (not comic time).
Well, we don’t know what the orbs define as experience. Heck using her shield could grant her less experience, & we also don’t know how much experience the orbs had prior to her destroying the tank.
Battlefield usage (a.k.a. ‘experience’ in gamer-speak) may have nothing to do with it. Consider the following two possibilities
OPTION A (TECHNOLOGICAL)
The ‘skill tree’ is nothing more than the ‘current settings’ summary that you see on any bit of advanced technology. Be it TV, video recorder or computer. During the press conference Sydney stumbled on something akin to a ‘keyboard shortcut’ and accidentally enabled the ‘change mode’ option.
Once Halo has figured it out, she can just keep changing the default preferences, until her orbs are optimised for her personal needs.
OPTION B (USER ASSESSMENT)
The ‘skill tree’ is showing the certified competence of the user. As the user demonstrates understanding of each function, and has shown that they are capable of handling more complex features, they are gradually unlocked.
If you look at the various uses of orb powers, in the battle, none of them are actually demonstrating innovative use of her powers. They are just using them in ways that Sydney has already shown. Be it in the press conference, or earlier.
Whereas, in the press conference, she did find some new things. Like how to get a much more powerful tank-melting blast, if using the PPO, whilst flying. Plus using the embiggener. This may have passed the threshold to demonstrate ‘competent understanding’ thus allowing her to pick the next item to learn.
Which seems to have been the True Sight feature, which allowed her to analyse the aggro aura. But a single use of that clearly is not sufficient to allow her to progress to the next level of usage. Perhaps there is more for her to find out about that? Or alternatively, she still needs to find out more about her other powers (or show creative use of them) before she is given access to more.
Finally, of course, it may have nothing to do with her actions at all. The unlocks could be according to a set schedule. Or cosmic alignment. Or just reflect the various stages of the eggs development. The closer they get to hatching, the more draconic powers they exhibit.
Ten-shun and Ten-hut are the same thing. Just a fast, shortened, garbled version of A-ten-SHUN or a-TEN-shun. I snapped to to all of them!!
Probably saved yourself form doing a lot (more) push ups by doing so.
A professional would not say “ten-SHUT”, at least many moons ago. We usually used “a-ten-SHUN!” where the “a” part was almost unheard (sotto-voice?) and “SHUN was almost so fast that someone unfamilliar may mistake it as “SHUT!”. “Tin-HUT” or “tin-SHUT” was good for twenty or so pushups.
Her last upgrade was just yesterday afternoon, near the end of the press demonstration, barely a few hours before the fight in the “cah pahk.”. If she had any other upgrades before that, it would have most likely been during the few months (maybe) after she first found them (or did they find her? Hmmm…) & experimented to learn about them.
Give her some time, man…
Ooops! This was supposed to be a reply for Doctor, just above here.
Which doctor? Who could you be talking about? Witch doctors, doctors of philosophy, doctors of psychology or psychiatry or even a plain old medical doctor? Or one of those timey wimey doctors?
*looks just above here*
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s Super Doc!
Peggy might have also mentioned to Sydney to not lock her knees when she came to attention, otherwise it wouldn’t be all that long till she passed out due to restricted blood flow. Bending her knees slightly would be enough to stay awake. Back in my Air Force days saw more more than one troop just keel over in formation standing at attention due to a rather long medal presentation ceremony.
But then this is Sydney we are talking about, so being close to passing out might keep her calm.
I like Maxima’s face in panel 4. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her give a face like that before.
Panel 5, but yea, that is a new one. :-)
I *just* realized that all the collars have the first initial of the person’s super name on them! That’s a cool detail!
