Grrl Power #261 – Pylondriver
Hopefully you guys aren’t getting bored with Maxima whipping this guy like he’s heavy cream. As usual, this is just how the fight went down in my head, but it’s also part of the reason I’ve been doing so many double pages lately. Not that this page really counts as a double, I just wanted to draw that big ass panel of Max using that overpass column like a pestle on Vehemence. Still, gotta keep the story moving. It makes for a lot of nights drawing into the wee hours, but it’s worth it. It does mean I didn’t get a chance to do a mini comic below this page, something to the tune of Sydney staring wide eyed at the carnage and leaning over to Harem, telling her to remind her never to get into a fight with Maxima or something of that nature.
You can tell by now that one of Maxima’s official unofficial powers is dramatic face shadowing, which is harder for her to pull off than for instance Alucard, since his face isn’t metallic and reflective. Luckily unofficial powers are much cheaper. Of course when the RPG system she’s built in allows for it, I like to give Maxima some sort of presence or intimidation attack, similar to a dragon’s fear aura, but really just based on her reputation for being a real bonebreaker in a fight.
Here’s the link to the new comments highlighter for chrome which I can’t live without anymore, and the GitHub link which you can use to install on FireFox via Greasemonkey.
Is it bad that I’m disappointed in how one-sided this fight is?
I mean, it’s still awesome, and Maxima’s being a total badass right now. Not to mention a complete beatdown is probably what needs to be seen/filmed right now, for appearance’s sake.
But I was really hoping Vehemence might break her ego a little…. just a little.
But then, the way in which this comic ends with the limited view of her attack gives me hope that the Thursday comic will involve V holding/blocking/dodging the pillar and then giving a proper fight, even if it’s still a losing one.
Would you be willing to settle for him breaking her nose instead…just a little?
Already did it…https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/1508
yeh i think that was what Torn was referring to
I’m just waiting for this exchange
Sydney: wow max that was a little overkill don’t you think?
Max: really? He deserved it!
Sydney: well could you have done it without sending that overpass construction back five years?
Max: It was a super fight, stuff was going to get broken. And besides, that’s Arianna’s problem.
About the nose breaking thing, you do realize that Maxima decided to showboat and take V’s haymaker to the face without even attempting to block, don’t you?
She could have ended this fight without a scratch otherwise, and that’s why people like Jimmy and Observer and me are pointing out the utter *yawn* factor going on here.
Besides, why block with the face? I know her face is tougher than anyone elses, but I always learnt to take a fist on the hardest part of my skull: Just above the forehead.
A simple bowing of the head is all that is needed for this, and with the assailant hopefully breaking his hand, rather than your nose.
Guess that works for supers too.
Why? https://i.imgur.com/q5E6TLi.jpg That’s why.
It was all for the cameras. By not even attempting to avoid the punch she sent a message to anyone who sees the footage that a punch from someone as powerful as V doesn’t even make her flinch. Blocking, avoiding or even bowing to make him hit her forehead could be seen as a confirmation that Max felt it necessary to take him seriously.
Mainly she hopes this will have two consequences. First of all she hopes that some of the would be villains will feel that with monsters such as her around a carer as a super criminal no longer look that tempting. She’s also painting a huge bullseye on herself, giving supers who feel they have to prove they are the toughest guys around someone to aim for. Any criminal that attacks her is one less Archon will have to spend time hunting down.
The public image is what Arianna was hired to handle. Max can live with a large part of the public being afraid of her, but knows that Ari probably will be able to put a positive spin on what happend here.
Could just be a warm-up, and we get the full battle between the two after he gets up from this. This seems like the kind of thing that would happen just before he gets up and says something along the lines of “My turn” and makes it a real fight.
That’s what hoping for: “That all you got, Goldie?”
Does he seriously believe that he can successfully play the “Rope-A-Dope” card against Maxima?
What do you think her answer would be?
Personally, I think she’d get monumentally pissed.
At present, she’s leaving these GINORMOUS pauses between attacks, presumably to allow him to surrender. She is under NO obligation to do so. As an alternative, she could just hit him non-stop until something falls off of his body…
…something more important than just a tooth.
Just hopefully nothing between his legs. Now that would be painful.
We still don’t know what Vehemence’s plan was, I get the impression that he’s more intelligent than just wanting to straight on beat up superheroes for its own sake.
What if his powers grow to match the strength of anyone who beats him up? (He was very happy looking at Maxima’s nuking of that tank, saying she was perfect)
Or he could just trying to hold out against Maxima until he can lure her into some sort of trap.
Scratch that, I misremembered. That was some other overly beefy villainous guy.
That was Deus.
The Lex Luthor wannabe .
No, that was Toll House Cookies
Why do people keep calling Deus that?
“My turn” became completely implausible once Maxima took his haymaker to the face without blocking and only suffered a broken nose. A haymaker is a full strength punch, V didn’t hold anything back and so he has nothing greater to hope to dish out.
Right now we’re (or at least me) just watching the train wreck continue to unfold and hoping that it doesn’t take too many updates to complete.
Never lead with your best attack unless your opponent is unworthy.
Unless he can get stronger. Power-ups happen.
And this is the person Dabbler is near constantly antagonizing… sooner or later she’s gonna push Maxima too far. lol
Yeah, she’s trying to push her into bed ;)
You’re not the only one who’s disappointed. After all a fight is no fun to watch if its so completely one sided.
Also yeah I defiantly see that happening with him having doges that and then countering into his combo.
It sounds like Vehemence is just clearing his sinuses. Yeah he took some damage, but perhaps there’s a second wind coming.
Yup. Notice how he’s conspicuously not shown in this page. He’s probably just got dust in his airways.
Please let it be the case. Would be so much fun!
He was actually shown, his silhouette is visible in the cloud of dust in frame 1
That’s only his silhouette. His body has yet to be seen – he got a full twist punch in the face from Maxima and was cloaked in dust then too, yet showed no visible damage from Maxima’s attacks when it cleared apart from another lost tooth.
All we see here is him lying down, and we clearly hear him hocking a loogie. Much like badasses do in action movies, after taking a punch but before the fight is in full swing.
This fight is over. Yes, Maxima roflstomped the big bad, no he doesnt get a comeback. We cut to mission recap and the unconcius V being taken away in a stretcher.
That way, the next time Maxima gets hurt, it’s a real “oh crap” moment… for everyone. Only Dabbler is on her level, and only because of her breadth of utility- Maxima’s whole schtick is how powerful she is.
Yeeeeah, you’d THINK that, wouldn’t you?
This is not my area of expertise but depending on the type of reinforced concrete used to make that pylon it might be even more dangerous than Maximas fists. One way of reinforcing concrete involves stretching steal netting in the mold then releasing it once the concrete is dry. Demolition of this type of concrete is highly dangerous and if this pylon is that type the end that hits V and gets pulverized will explode like a bomb. You can expect that the pulverized pylon will release shrapnel both concrete and sharp bits of the steal netting with enough force to embed bits of steal several inches deep in everything nearby even stone. This is caused by the release of energy from the tension on the steel. Given how its being pulverized my conclusion is that even for V its gona hurt.
Yeah except that we’ve already established that maxima has no problems hitting hard enough to smash someone through that concrete, and adding in some flying hours into the equation. Considering that if Maxima just punched him that same level of force would be concentrated down to only the size of a fist instead of a meter diameter… Also I dont think given this guys level of invulnerability that concrete fragments and metal shrapnel are goign to have much more of an impact given that a 50 caliber to the eyeball was only effective as a distraction.
You’re right. But she may have just put a bunch of people in the hospital with the shrapnel from that stunt. It’s the whole collateral damage thing.
There’s also a defensive advantage to using something that allows you to stay out of arms reach, since V hasn’t demonstrated ranged capability yet, and even Maxima would probably prefer not to be grabbed since it seems that she can have max shields OR max strength, and she needed the near max shields to match his strength, so would have trouble in a situation where she’d probably need both without time to flicker between them. (V uses 1 arm to hold her down while the other punches her in the face repeatedly, she can either stay held down because she’s using the shield to defend herself, or she can use the strength to try and get out, and get turned into jelly).
I would like to point out that Maxima was holding the pylon parallel to the plane of the earth in panel 4, meaning the end of the pylon is actually describing a 90* arc before it hits the end. So she is actually using it as a lever, not just pile driving down and thumping. Meaning it will be having a LOT of kenetic energy on impact. Perhaps not *quite* as much as if she had taken a swing with her fist, but much of the force of that punch would have been ablated in creating the resulting sub-orbital trajectory. This way, the maximum amount of force is applied to the target at hand.
Which means, damage-wise, it’s probably a wash either way, but it looks cooler and is more intimidating, which is Max’s real purpose here. She doesn’t just want to beat him, she wants to make it crystal clear that no matter how badass you think you are, you ain’t got what it takes. This is as much a psy-op as it is a beatdown.
Presumably KOed enemy + hidden by smoke = Mostly unharmed enemy.
This is what I have learnt from watching a number of shonen fighting anime over the years.
Or he used the dust to escape.
But I doubt that is the case here.
That’s the problem. V THINKS this is an episode of some Anime cartoon. “We must stage an epic battle, because ego”. Max is deadly serious and losing patience.
This hasn’t been an exchange, save when he hit her the one time, presumeably his best shot. the rest is Max testing his/her limits, unimpeded. where it ends? We will soon see.
I find it hard to believe that Vehemence saw the press conference and decided to take them all, alone, if this is all he has to offer. I’m really expecting something more.
He also watched them fight.
But the only data he has on Maxima is the press conference and she only used part of her power there.
But I also expect he still has something up his sleeves.
I don’t think so. V’s miscalculation came from thinking that Maxima was first among equals, but the truth is that the rest of the gang aren’t in her league at all. They are basically part of her uniform, can’t be Superman without the JL.
He could take Archon + one super tough member, but actually, being able to fight Archon disqualifies you from fighting Maxima. If you are slow enough that you don’t slaughter them all in a second you’ll never even see her. If you are weak enough that you don’t take off Stalwart’s head when you hit him then you can throw your Sunday punch at Maxima and it’ll just bloody her nose. If you are only durable enough that their hits chip away at you then when Maxima hits you you’ll be crushed.
…Another demolished Mosque, perhaps?…
Highway overpass…and she’ll probably give him all the pylons. First smashing him through them, then pulverizing them into his chest.
Suppose that is better than giving him piles :P
That would be a *real* pain in the butt.
Everyone is all boo hoo the big bad was defeated too easily. I am sitting here seeing that look on Max and reading her lines thinking, “Who is the bad guy again?” She seems to be getting WAY too much fun out of this.
I was thinking the same thing. Who’s having more fun here?
But isn’t it better when poeple have fun doing their job?
World War Hulk:
Sentry to Hulk “You’re the only one I can hit…like this!”
I get the feeling Max is enjoying this for the same reason…
Remind me, how we’ll did that whole sentry thing work out?
With a lot of silliness involving a guy with massive superspeed and energy powers sufficient to blow up planets standing still and trading punches with the Hulk. :)
In other words, pretty much like the silliness we’re seeing here, with Maxima having speed, flight, and energy blasts as an advantage over poor “I’m just a strong man” V.
Yup, feeling the same thing
I have a feeling this is going to be a serious PR nightmare. Arianna has to deal with explaining why the battle involved So Much Collateral Damage.
There’s also the fact this takes place 2-3 months before the first few strips, so you have to take that into consideration for how the fight will end.
+1. Vehemence is not Maxima’s big problem. The repercussions from all the collateral destruction will become a major headache for the team.
It involved so much collateral damage because that’s what fights between capes is going to cause and about the only way to avoid such fights is to give the bad guys whatever they want. The same is true about wars and anyone who has a problem with it is being unrealistic.
30 Supers go at it and we only lose a restaurant and a section of highway. No civilian fatalities.
I think this can be spun real easy.
While I would prefer she not seem to take so pleasure out of it, I also don’t expect her to be perfect and think such a reaction is understandable given the circumstances. This is the man who claims responsibility for a cowardly, base sneak attack on a group who had gathered to eat in which at least three of her teammates were injured and who continues to refuse to surrender despite given multiple opportunities to do so.
How is that a ‘cowardly, base sneak attack’ but Maxi going for Fedorka’s nuts is ‘smart, not dirty’? o_O
I’m pretty cool with it being smart fighting in both directions.
…actually, the villains could have been a lot smarter about it by blowing up the room the heroes were in from the get-go, taking out a chunk of the team.
On the other hand, I’m perfectly fine with Maxima feeling some satisfaction at being capable of not only cutting loose, but of whaling away on the guy who has hurt some of her team.
Pretty natural emotion from a person who fights for a living.
#facepalm
On one hand, there’s an unprovoked attack against a group of people who’s only “crime” is to protect the general public from supers who would abuse their power.
On the other hand is one of the instigators of said attack who has lost any right to expect fair play first, by not only part of the attack, but claiming to have organized it, and, second, by refusing to obey a lawful command to surrender.
When you are about to launch an attack against someone, good or better, you don’t ‘Leroy Jenkins’ it so they can get ready and wipe the floor with your face
What some call ‘unprovoked’, smarter people call ‘pre-emptive strike’
And a pre-emptive strike against someone who pose no danger to you as long as you don’t go around threatening other people is what I would classify as “cowardly”. The attackers are expected to obey what I would think most people would regard as a good law… how shocking!
If you go around attacking people, and you get hurt badly or killed, so what? What you got you deserve. Don’t attack someone and then whine if they turn you into a broken bag of flesh and crumbled bone.
I kinda expecting his glow marks to like catch fire and him get a power boost
Err what about Maxima’s previous conversation of “don’t hit them with cars etc. cause they are lighter/softer then if we just punched them.” :P
1) Not a car
2) Not being thrown
3) Not equipped with crumple zones to absorb impact
4) Being used in such a way as to complement Max’s hitting power, not replace it with a projectile impact.
5) and because of her earlier actions it is already trashed.
6) Reusable in case the enemy is still conscious and in case you still have some anger issues to work out.
7) Reusable in case you still feel the enemy needs a couple more good blows.
I just thought of something that could have funny consequences:
Does Sydney know that it was Achilles and Amorphous at the bank who attacked her?
(If yes, she must’ve been told off-camera, or worked it out herself.)
If no…
I predict antics and shennannigans.
*Addendum:
Off-PANEL.
Aheh.
Begun the Prank Wars have. As have the Prank Wars Betting Pool.
There is not going to be anything left of V….
I almost feel sorry for the guy- but he knew what he was getting himself into.
Crap, his name. A strong passionate feeling. He’s a dang body swapper! That’s his trump card.
I don’t know that his name necessarily lends itself to that interpretation, but it’s an interesting possibility. He takes a powerful body, and if it turns out that it’s not powerful enough, he lets his opponent make a punching bag out of it so it will be weakened when he swaps with them.
Another possibility I’ve considered is that some of his powers may be locked behind a damage threshold, and he has to take a certain amount of punishment before he can use them–sort of like Penance, but without the angst. He wants to use those powers for something, and getting hurt is an unpleasant but necessary step. Maxima is his key.
*shrug* Or he could have just severely underestimated his opponent. It happens.
That would be terrifying, if that Smile we see on Maxima is actually Vehemence in her body- and he/she’s now attempting to finish off Max in His old body so as to completely replace her.
Especially worrying if the initial multi-month ahead ‘flashforward’ the comic started with hadn’t had any resolution or knowledgeing of this fact beforehand.
I love how that dirt looks!
Is that a brush you are using or a filter?
Anyone else getting an extremely strong “Justice Lords” vibe from Maxi?
In the sense that ‘Good is not Nice’? Maybe, but a major difference is at the end of the day Maxima is a federal officer enforcing the laws that the government has put into place. The Justice Lords, on the other hand used their power as a means of enforcing their own rules on everyone. Rules that they dictated and could change at any time with no consequences to themselves.
Um, let’s be clear, Maxima > humans in gov. They only matter because she’s decided to care what they say. Her decision, not theirs, determines what laws will be enforced. You can see it in how she treats her team, and you can see it in how she treats Arianna.
1) Maxima’s clear and unequivocal stance has always been that possession of powers does not give a person special privilege.
2) Maxima has never given any indication that she would disobey any lawful and legal order given her by legitimate superior officer- and I doubt that Ariana is in any chain of military command.
3) While Maxima’s relationship with Ariana is often antagonistic, the source of conflict seems due more to Ariana’s preference towards marketing strategy over military objectives than any supposed feelings of superiority on Maxima’s part due to her powers.
4) While they are her teammates, Maxima is also their commanding officer and I have yet to see her treatment of them deviate greatly from what I would expect from most commanding officers.
Walter has the right idea (and how she treats her team and how she treats Ari are different things: she respects her team, she tolerates, for now, Ari)
I find Max to be in my top five most boring character’s in the series. She tops everyone in power. Her military/feminist personality is kind of bland. And, unless there’s something DaveB hasn’t told us yet, her back story seems pretty cookie-cutter, so…there’s not a lot of room for the character to grow at this point.
So part of me hopes V rises up, humbles Max, and it requires the whole team to take him down. And we could see some grudging growth on her part come out of it. Mostly, I hope she just totally overpowered V and killed him with a pylon. The aftermath of having to deal with press, teammates, and her own self image, when she realizes that now it’s not just the bad guys who fear her, but everyone, including her own teammates, fear her, would make for a great character story arc and really allow the character to grow.
Agrecian
Except that if her own team was going to fear her, it would have been at the press conference when she unleashed death beam of zomygod power which pretty much sums up to her having the capability of wiping out the entire team in very quick order if she so chose to do so. She’s their ace in the hand when it comes to really powerful supers the rest of the team can’t handle and if she were to be overpowered, there goes their ace. I gathered from the previous pages that the team already knows most Max’s capabilities. So her taking down the guy would not really come as much of a surprise to any of the team.
The press, now that’s another matter, but Max has already gone for the intimidating I am uber powerful, fear me show with that one. Pummeling the really powerful guy would just further reinforce the whole ‘you do not mess with me’ image she was going for at the press conference.
Maxima has killed other supers before. She might well feel remorse privately later, but her job and an the public image that job needs, requires potentially deadly force. If he can break her nose at full shield, then he could potentially kill Max and all the rest of the team. Max doesn’t currently have the free space for any more compassion than pausing between attacks to allow him to stay down and surrender.
Now give one reason why anyone who hasn’t chosen to use their powers in an illegal manner should fear her.
Well he has already proven that if he gets a good hit in he can hurt Max. So she used the distraction to off-balance him and then has been pummeling him without giving him an opportunity to recover enough to defend. The moment before the pillar smash was the first pause in her onslaught since the bullet.
Its been pointed out that because of her super strength she basically has to live restraining herself all of the time to avoid accidental damage or injuring some one. This guy she doesn’t have to hold back, she can pretty much just let go and he can take it. All she has to worry about is collateral damage and now she has a few oopses her bos is not going to be happy about.
If he recovers from that pillar smash to come at Max, she could be in trouble.
So, implied WoC speech?
Okay, having to refresh the page every time want to reply is seriously starting to piss me off
HA HA
Whatch whats behind the bad guy before you hit them!
If your strong enough to pick up a car and beat someone with it theres a good bet that your fist will hurt the bad guy more than the metal of the car!
Come on Max really maybe its time to follow what you preach.
Cars are made out of a lot of plastics and cabling and empty space to go along with their aluminum and steel. That’s why they only weigh a couple thousand pounds despite being the size of… well, a car. Realistically someone with super-strength trying to pick up the car will just wind up tearing off whatever they grab since affixing that much weight to a small space like that requires the thing to be very strong.
Re-enforced concrete pilings on the other hand have a LOT of dense mass to them and are VERY sturdy. Given the stresses an overpass piling is expected to endure over several decades it’s actually fairly believable that one could pick it up by one end and it wouldn’t simply fall apart under it’s own weight.
With that much dense mass in hand I’d say driving that pile down into the guy with a little help from gravity might make it a worthwhile effort.
I’ll give this one a “killing cat girls” pass.
Also remember that it is not just concrete, but also includes steel reinforcing.
And I have little doubt that Maxima’s Zero Range TK is helping to hold it together so it doesn’t explode into rubble-shrapnel upon impact.
It’s occurred to me that this is the same day that started with Sydney going to the bank … in 2010.
GrrlPower needs to win an award for “longest day ever”.
Nope, check out “Mansion of E”, 3500+ strips before they finished “The Day That Changed Everything”, and that was updated daily
That move should be named piledriver.
Except, she is using a… what’s the name of that thing? Oh yeah, a pylon :P
After a hit like that, it’s not a pylon any more…It’s a *pile* of rubble.
How about the “Pylon Invasion”?
Depends on where she inserts it :P
Ah well, since Vehemence admitted to arranging this little brawl, the responsibility for the damages is all on his head…and continuing to accumulate rapidly too.
I wonder who’s gonna have to pay for all the damages?
Most insurance does not apply to acts of war, but does cover vandalism. It could be a tough case to argue.
At this point and with something that big, does it matter?
I can’t hear/read the word “pylon” without hearings immediately in my head “You must construct additional pylons.”
You are not alone.
Funny he should mention Alucard, i´m just waiting for V to go with his own “Releasing Control Art Restriction Systems” version….
Also, Max is grandstanding again, even though she knows this guy is dangerous enough to actualy hurt her if given a chance. tut tu Max, mistakes is to be learned from, not repeated.
Except not really. His best punch, which Maxima decided to take full force, only managed to break some soft cartilage. That’s no credible threat at all, she could take his punches all day long without injury if she didn’t just eat them and instead used her martial training. You know, blocking, rolling with the blow, that sort of thing. And we’ve seen what happen when she actually fight back, right? Curbstomp!
V is no threat at all to Maxima, barring the sudden (and tedious) reveal of some other superpower which will only make this sadly painful episode drag on even longer than it already has.
Genre savvy tip I learned from Dragonball Z: Never wait for the dramatic smoke dissolve to prove you wrong after you said “Nobody could survive that.”
Yea, Atomic Bombshell already failed on that. It’s like the Evil Overlord’s Handbook level stuff.
Minor point to other commenters regarding the wait for a dramatic reversal:
Not that I disagree with the trope/cliche of “bad guy is on the ropes so naturally there needs to be a rallying point for them,” but this isn’t a traditional supers comic, this is a “slice of life” supers comic. With Archon being under the DoD they aren’t a Justice-League-Like organization that comes in, operates basically because “are you going to tell Batman he can’t do that?” then leave. They’re going to go in under orders, beat the objective to submission, go home, then have 4-5 strips about how objective obviously didn’t do their homework because… idunno… Sidney knew they were a good 10 minutes from the target transforming into their final form and Anvil took that opportunity to go all “Hulk Smash” on ’em.
Personally, I’d be more surprised if there WAS a reversal here. For this fight, Maxima got her chance to flex, the fight gets concluded (which DaveB alludes to taking too long as of this strip), and we get back to the core concept of Sidney being silly and the amusing juxtaposition of the inane with the Übermensch. Everyone wins (Except Vehemence… because… well.. pylondriver).
That would be fine. In fact I knew this is a slice of life comic and I like that genre. And at the moment this is OK pacing. If it finishes up quickly and gets back to livin the super life and the funny I would be very happy.
My comments hoping for a dramatic reversal are for if this goes on for too much longer (which is easier to judge when doing an archive dive later than it is now waiting for days in between) in which case I would hope for something more interesting to watch than a “curbstomping” fight. I’ll be fine with it for while longer I guess. I mostly just made that comment cause I like commenting (obviously) and there isn’t a whole lot going on worth commenting on in a prolonged “curbstomping”. Other than whether Maxi’s zero point thingie reinforces the pillar she is using to smash V thus making it a better weapon then if Sydney did the same thing. (full comment on that elsewhere )
I have plenty of faith in DaveB at this point. I’m sure this will read great on the archive dive I’ll be doing sometime next year. :)
Dave has so far not used a cliche without ringing a change on it. If V gets up it will be his unconscious carcass staggering around under the control of those tattoos which are really a minor demon. Dabbler chases the demon off and V disintegrates into a pile of scrap plastic.
The reason DaveB ‘alludes to the fight taking too long’ is because of the people bitching about it even before Cree showed up
What happened to not using the environment because it is more effective and less costly to hit them with your fists? (convo between max and halo)
Read through the comments. Been answered.
Rule 37 There is no “overkill”. If you think she is going to give this git time to recover you are failing to follow the fact that she isn’t and hasn’t so far. She follows the rule if it is still moving it isn’t down which is a damn good rule to follow with supers and zombies and aliens since all three tend to have the ability to get back up after you have done the killing blow or what would considered a killing blow.
Zombies fire it is the only way to be sure. It is amazing how a desiccated body burns like a torch once a human dies it starts to dry out. Only one writer actually did this right with her vampires.
Aliens nuke them from orbit it is the only way to be sure.
Supers keep at them until they are either a unable to move or dead sorry guys Zod dies at the end.
V may live through this fight only because Max isn’t making a concerted effort to kill him. She wants him alive to confirm his brag that he organized this party. And who suggested V do such a stupid thing. Since he was not the mind controller, it may go one layer deeper.
Am I the only one who saw this and was reminded of how you “snuff” a cigarette?
… and that last one there with the pylon driver going on made me hear in my head…
“YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS!”
Thanks for that. Now I’m going to be saying that and giggling uncontrollably all day tomorrow.
THANK YOU! I first heard the word pylons from Starcraft 1 before hearing about real life construction pylons so whenever the comic and the comments were talking about pylons I kept thinking WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT STARCRAFT?!?!?
Because Blizzard Entertainment has rendered that game totally irrelevant.
Remember everybody: I coined the phrase Very Badly Hurt at the beginning of this party…
Maxima made her intimidation check vs me. I will not be picking a fight with her!
I think that was her plan all along with pretty much all the bad guys.
So that’s what she was aiming for, making sure her boots were safe from Yorp…
As to those saying the fight is boring, I disagree I see this fight as a showcase event, we have known about the characters for years but now finally we tuly have seen and now truly know the respective power levels of the team. This fight is just a scene setup. The villans we have seen so far, even Vehemence are just a quick pick up group of individuals facing a true team. It is after this battle i feel we will begin to be introduced to the main villain team who will be opposing Archon.
Who? The CIA or the IRS?
The IRS trembles in fear at the mention of Arianna’s name, so they’re out. And Leon keeps using the CIA’s servers to run his personal MMORPG.
Welp she smashed him good there, if that don’t knock him down then I don’t know what will.
That moment where Max is shadowed . . . it totally reminded me of Alucard (from Hellsing)
At some point Vehemence is going to get the upper hand on Goldie, right?
Because if not this is just another boring completely one sided fight. And it’s getting tiring seeing Max’s smugness almost as much as seeing wonder spaz’s.
Then do us a favor and stop commenting
I could ask the same…
You know what else is completely boring and tiring and 100% predictable?
Your comments! :D
Then how about you use the force and tune into something better. Or at least someone who cares.
We need Maxima to do less of the bad-ass silent and menacing routine and do more banter. The fight is almost over and we need her to fill in more Bingo words. https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/1358
Speaking of Max speaking. I think Daphne is going to remind Max of the speech she made that morning about acting professionally.
“. just some super powered jackass taking out a bridge and 30 people die. People need to be able to look at us a time like that and know that we’re not just a bunch of goofballs.”

The purpose of Maxima’s speech was that she/they “can’t give into every impulse” because “if something major happened [like] some super powered jackass taking out a bridge and 30 people [dying]”, the public perceive Archon as not taking its job seriously. If anything, this underscores Maxima’s point: the support wasn’t destroyed due to an act of frivolity, but within the performance of her duties.
No, you couldn’t be more wrong if you painted it ‘yellow’ and called it ‘a grape’
Maxi could have stopped before punting the pylon, but no, she wanted to show off, an ‘act of frivolity’ if you will
1) See the jagged edge on the pylon in several panels in the comic above? The pylon was already damaged beyond further usage as a pylon by the time Maxima used it.
2) “Maxi could have stopped”? Stopped what? Hitting a foe who has already shown an incredible (but hopefully not unlimited) capacity to soak up damage and still might be getting up to fight some more in a way that limits his ability to possibly hit her back? Even if the pylon had been undamaged at the time, this alone would make it not an act of frivolity.
3) While her methods may be more extravagant than absolutely necessary, it still serves two purposes: first, it offers her the tactical advantages mentioned in my second point above, and, second, it emphasizes her point that messing with Archon is a bad idea.
BTW, a grape that someone painted yellow would still most likely be a grape. So, I would be the opposite of “wrong” to call it that.
You might have a point if the first thing Maxima said after punching V through the construction site wasn’t “Oops.” That made it more than clear that she hadn’t given much thought to the consequences of her actions. Sydney was right to throw her own words back into her idiot face.
Mistake? Yes. Careless mistake? Perhaps. Frivolous mistake? No.
I, for one, am not bored of Vehemence getting the hells beaten out of him by Maxima. I’m not sure it’s possible for that to get boring.
I know this is asking a bit much, but could you guys maybe do profiles for some of the villains like you do the cast?
She can fly and has crazy super strength. If she’s gotten to the point where she’s willing to try to kill him, then why not grab (hook him with something if nothing else), fly him up and chuck him at the sun. Sure, he probably won’t actually hit the sun, but long before he’d hit it, he’d die from exposure to the nigh-vacuum.
….. Mamma Gkika?
you know i would love to see how max got like this (not power mind your personality) i have done a few rereads and seen a bit on how she was as a kid she seems well a lot more brutal (i know the feminist thing is just guys being dicks)
Well Maxima has seen action in a couple of wars. And she has had to kill people. War does desensitise.
Plus she does not leave herself any time for gaming! Poor former nerd.
*sympathetically, but proudly, gives Maxima’s inner nerd a hug*
