Grrl Power #244 – Recruitus interruptus
Lots of speculation about (FWT)Death Toll’s powers, and there have been several correct guesses, but I won’t say which ones (but those should be further reinforced by this page). Those people get to say they called it, and hopefully the actual reveal will still be worth it, but first I need to show the characters doing a little work to get there.
Not too much else to say about this page, other than Sydney’s armband is suspiciously bereft of content. Let’s assume she’s locked out of many of the usual functions until she is trained on using them. That’s one of those things I would have put a lot more time into designing if I still had a job where I was bored at work for long stretches. But that’s fine, I’ll have time to spruce it up at some point and if it looks radically different I can use say Sydney is using a different theme.
<— If you enjoy the comic, consider supporting it via Patreon so I can continue to food. Or buy something via the Amazon referral link, which I really appreciate cause I know it’s like one or two extra clicks, unless you just have that referral link bookmarked, but it’s fun going in to the report and seeing what was purchased through it. I can’t see who bought what or any details of the transaction, just what was purchased. I’m not the NSA over here. (Someone bought a Fender Stratocaster through the link once! Thanks!) Here’s something I saw on the list – I know nothing about this but it looks cute. A Centaur’s Life.
Up until he was attacked by Anvil DT has merely observed and deflected. He has stood and defended himself from errant bodies and energy from others. So why the need to arrest him? Now granted he may have hinted at conspiracy to commit a crime but what crime? I am not saying he is not a bad guy. But from a legal standpoint…….? As long as he was merely observing I would have left him alone or asked him what his interest was in being there as well as the man in the hat Sidney taslked to earlier.
It’s been discussed before. This is a riot situation, and a LEO asked him to surrender. In response, he challenged said LEO to a fight. In situations like that, when a LEO says stand down, you stand down.
She did not identify herself as a LEO (or a Ralph or a Donny :P) and he did not challenge her, he warned her what would happen if she did
ARC members aren’t LEO, they are military. This isn’t a riot, it is combat. There are no Miranda Rights or “innocent, heavily armed bystanders” in combat.
… no matter what members of the open-carry community may claim.
Most of the open carry community is ex-military & retired LEOs. Those are the people that you want around when the MS-13 gang bangers walk around with fully automatic weapons.
The bloods gang members that robbed a liquor store less than 10 min before where willing to punch an armed cop in the face, you can see the gold bracelet that the “hands up” witness had on in the liquor store on the ground next to the cop car.
a) Anvil only asked FWTDT to surrender and never mentioned arrest until after he made his threat. Hence, it is quite possible that the surrender was merely meant as a precautionary measure. They may have held him temporarily as a person of interest, but that’s all.
b) Maxima’s order to “take care of the civvies” probably would have included broadcasting an advisory that the area was now under military control or something similar. Furthermore, if FWTDT had doubts her authority to call for his surrender, he could have asked her to supply identification.
c) Just how was his “warning” not a challenge?
Grr, forgot the end anchor tags after “take care of the civvies“.
Ok, with all this legal arguments now I am curious, what is actually the legal situation of an official who is drinking alcohol when witnesses a crime? Are them allowed to take action?
Of course asuming it do have effect over them :)
Look up “officer of the court”. Basically they are never totally off duty. If he has been drinking his only obligation might be to call for whoever is on duty. I’m not sure how it might apply to Archon. They are the only ones of their kind with no backup and their legal standing is unique because of that. At the moment, all the legalisms are moot anyway. They are under attack and their response is strictly up to them as to who gets hit, drugged and stashed. The equally unique nature of their attackers also puts any standard procedure on hold until it is safe for ordinary police and courts to deal with the attackers. Consider them as human bombs. Neutralize then arrest. This is still the neutralize phase, even if some of the characters are using terms like arrest. The formalities do not yet need to be observed until the bomb is unplugged.
A man has been in a bar all afternoon drinking a whiskey like each half an hour. At some point the barmar offered him another one, the man look at his watch and answer “Of course not. Right now I am on duty.”
A man has to know his limits.
That is actually an ugly woman (D) in TX that Rick Perry is getting lawfared for trying to force her to resign due to her DUIs
Ok, seriously, what does the lass being “ugly” (your opinion) have to do with what’s going on in Texas?
He appeared together with a group that unprovoked attack Archon.
It was within thier right to asume he was part of thier group and thus a danger to them.
Even a normal person would be allowed to attack him in self defense after a try to verify he was not an enemy.
If he was not an enemy he could have kept his distance (like fedorka) or surrendered (like the hairdresser). Or not appear in here the first place, like all the supers who did not take part in this.
I can bet they are also recording everything seen by those googles. And Max had hers on when she flew out. So they have him dead to rights on legal grounds.
He needs one hell of a reason why he did not leave the area, did not keep his distance and did not calrifiy he was not an enemy. And even then, Anvil and Archon were still in thier rights to asume him an enemy and attack him as one given the situation.
I agree.
I think it is even common sense. If a gang walk into a store and just one of them start to threat the owner, I do not think it’s healthy assume the others are inoffensive.
Beside that, could actually be any doubt about his intentions? In particular dressed like that :)
*sigh*
“start to threat” = “starts to threaten”
“it’s healthy assume” = “it’s healthy to assume”
repeated rearrangement = lots of typos
Anyone not identifying themself asking for my surrender I will assume to be not an officer. Officers identifying themselves is a basic point that is or should be standard procedure.
Uniforms can be bought easily from many sources. Procedure and their id is what separates the real from the fakes.
Anyone in this situation can be from either side to a bystander and if you are “overpowered” or with “ultimate defence” then calmly walking through a battle that merely appears to be two Gangs will only leave you a temporary suspect when actual officers turn up.
Was he there at the start?
Yes he was there at the start.
Also, they are not officers of the law. They are military.
Besides, in a riot / combat situation, if you are told to surrender, or sit down, or lie down, or put the hands on the hood of your car, do it.
You can sue them afterwards. Not the time to argue NOW.
I have the feeling that the following quote from MEGAS XLR will be applicable soon:
Glorft Leader: “Your tactics are strange and cunning…. But Mostly Strange!!”
OK, I’m confused. When and how did Death Toll glom onto Heatwave’s powers? Hasn’t she been out of the fight since before he got involved?
He has been passively sucking down powers from the start
Assuming that is actually what he does then he’s been standing in the middle of the battle zone letting stuff hit him from the beginning of the fight. He could have even gotten some of his “copied” powers from his “allies”. But that’s assuming that he in fact copies powers in some fashion which is by no means certain. Dave B said we were getting on to him in the comments but he didn’t say which of theory lines that was last update.
If DT is indeed ‘Opposite Man’ against all attacks then all Sydney has to do is walk up to him and say “I order you NOT to punch yourself repeatedly in the head! And whatever you do, absolutely do not surrender!” (admittedly this sort of tactic works better with machine based intelligences)
But the perfect counter to reverse psychology is to say “okay, I’ll do that”.
So she should use reverse reverse psychology* on him?
*Assistance by Bizarro strongly recommended.
i personally think that DT can’t move around for his powers to work and that’s his main kryptonite. basically the reason he hasn’t moved from the spot. idk why, maybe it’s to ground him or somthing for his power
Or his powers require him to be attacked so he stands very still so all his enemies have a great shot and know just where to find him at any given moment after they recover from the daze or confusion caused by their last attacks counter.
Today’s menu: more random thoughts, with a dash of unresolved issues:
1) I wonder if Green Beans’ hair (and grin in panel 6) is a homage to another supervillain… although his comment in the mini-comic might be construed as a slight dig at the same.
2) The supervillain group seems to comprise of at least three sub-groups: HS (who was acting like she was in charge at the beginning of the fight), Green Beans’ faction (which would include Opal and Atomic Bimbo, but I don’t think includes FWTDT), Zebra Mohawk and friend(s) as well as possible unaligned people.
3) Just hoping Maxima trusts Halo’s instincts a bit more this time than when they last conversed.
4) If at least part of the group does manage to escape and FWTDT is among them, I suspect he makes a power play to grab control of the remnant.
5) Opal hinted that she would have been able to take care of Jabberwocky, which raises the possibility that we haven’t seen the full extent of her powers. Bigger, better portals or something else entirely? And if the former, why didn’t she simply use them at the beginning of the fight… or at least earlier?
So we have green hair thinking FWTDT is just another flunky. But then we have FWTDT being the likeliest reason to take on a gathering of heroes and villains –either as a power test or a signal to start opening the checkbooks on defense spending… or both. After all, if they capture him and then “recreate” the technology for use by the military, the company who manages the project would be set for the century. Can you say “Deus”? So maybe Fedora is like the product testing observer for a field test of armor Prototype II. Prototype I failed an earlier test while they were still recruiting ‘patsy’ villains.
Except the government might argue that the technology was used in the commission of a crime, which I believe would make it liable for forfeiture. A safer (both legally and physically) option would be to hire a few supers to field test it against.
i am thinking he’s a battery for super powers
I think his power is reversing. Now it is not just countering any attack made up against him it is any power that is used against him. For example when Anvil grappled him she probably tried to drain his power but at that moment FWTDT’s power activated and reversed power being drained from him and absorb by anvil to power being drained from Anvil and absorbed by him. Same thing with Jigga when she tried to pass through him in electric bolt mode he reversed her pass through with stuck in than just reversed her dreiction from himself to out and Stawalt just happen to be at there. We saw he is using same magnitute but ifferent elemets to stop Dabbler’s spells so probably he used a ‘reverse’ elemantal a couple of pages back indicates he doesn’t need to be hit with attack (where he was in a deadlock with Dabbler) it seems it is just enough to be subject of a power to produce ‘reverse’ effect. (In this page dabbler used an attack that moves along with ground unlike previous one directly heading towards him so he used a flame or heat barrier as reverse rather than a similar volcanic eruption)
I agree. Except I think what he actually did with jiggawatt was create a copper faraday cage… he’s the right color to be copper and he even appears to have rivets…
to fill in some blanks: in previous comic pages he backhanded a flying Concretia, and dispersed the laser fire from the buster buddiesTM.
Another thing I noticed that I have yet to see anyone comment on: Sydney seems to have figured out the private channel function without any assistance despite only having the pipboy for a few hours.
Tech designed and intended to be used in the middle of combat _tends_ to be fairly intuitive to use.
Also: how long did it take you to figure out how to make calls/send texts on a smart phone?
Me: 5-10 seconds
Mom: I’ll let you know when she does
To be fair 4-8 seconds of that was getting only a single thing to respond on my phone.
A new creature for the cryptozoology people; Bigfingers.
Worse, let’s just say sparks would fly if Jiggy and I were in the same room, whether we wanted them to or not.
I’ve shorted out digital watches, quartz watches go off time when I were them, my smartphone settings alter in my pocket despite locks, I could point out every radar station and cell/radio tower in the area blindfolded, I can estimate thunderstorms so well the cat started using me as a guide (bear in mind I live in lightning alley so I’ve gotten a lot of practice), and then there is my caller ID trick.
Electrifying personalities. I’ve met a few here and there. Interesting talent as long as they stay clear of my laptops.
Most sound engineers run into people like this on a regular basis too. There are actors who you just cannot body mic. Doesn’t matter if the antenna is ten feet away and the transmitter pack is outside their clothing. Put the same unit on a different actor under four layers of costume and move the antenna to the back of the space and its fine. But no matter what you do with that actor, you’re not going to get a clean mic signal.
I seem to be the opposite … most of the time. Electrical devices, especially computers, work better (or stop fouling up) when I pay attention to them or touch them. About 2/3rds of the time, at least. I’ve gone under street lights (walking or driving) and had them either turn off, or on, when I get close. Once, a street light turned off as I walked under it. Hours later, walking back, that same street light turned on again. It kinda spooked my roommate.
So you’re a Walking techbane (trope)?
Which is sad considering I really love tech.
how often have you vacuumed a room then noticed you never unwound the cord (and you know it was running because people complained about its noise) or iron a set of clothes without plugging in?
I seem better with powering DC devices. Winter and it’s cool dry air tends to be fun. Also 20a 240v doesn’t feel too good.
1) Just because something is designed to be intuitive doesn’t necessarily means it turns out that way. And what is intuitive for one person might not be intuitive for someone else.
2) I still say she gets points for it for doing it under pressure of a battle and while formulating a plan to beat FWTDT.
I think his transformations are key. He changes to fit whatever is attacking him, so copper body to absorb the lightning, and some sort of energy dampening/absorbing material to take the punches. Possibly the transformations aren’t limited to substances, he appears to have turning into a flaming man to handle the ice attack, so the question is, what can you force him to transform into that would leave him vunerable/helpless? I’m guessing Harem has gone out to get nerf guns to make him turn into something weak or maybe some caffine pills to make him transform into a narcoleptic? Idk.
Oooh maybe water balloons to make him turn into something like sponge.
So has anyone else noticed the bruise on Halo’s face and been wondering where it came from?
Or is that from some weird glow caused by her orbs which would make no sense when the bruise/glow is the same color even when she is shown holding two different colored orbs on this page.
It is from when the guy on Page #205 Punched her with “Nega-Knuckles”
And I’ve just spent the last 2 days rereading the archives and it was just as awesome the second time round (even though I usually have to take a 2 year break between rereads).
I’m really looking forward to what happens next and after reading what was said underneath the pages I think the next page will probably be released on Monday afternoon/Tuesday morning (GMT+2).
My question is does tge plan involve teleporting his clothes away and that adminestring the sleep gun? I mean the cape might be needle-proof, but if you tell harem to teleport his cape away it’s a good bet she’ll just take his whole suit… and his underpants.
Okay, so this may have been mentioned before (I didnt scan ALL the comments :P ) but to me it seems to be, for the most part, the Amazing Absorbing Man. So far, he has absorbed every form of attack that has hit him and been able to redirect it in one shape or form. He absorbed Anvil’s Kenetic energy, used it on Hiro there in the current page. Absorbed one of the fire girl (Cant remember her name) stray bullets. Not rightfully sure where the ice came from…maybe maybe not but it seems to fit a bit :P
The ice seems to come from Dabbler rather than DT but you’re probably right.
And just remember that since he can absorb thermal energy he could drain all the heat from an area which would cause that area to freeze (assuming he drains enough heat and doesn’t freeze himself in the process).
Ten to one she figured it out cause it mimics a comic book super hero and outside of being a new hero herself, she did have ALOT of time on her hands to read books in a comic book shop that had about a month or so before going under because there wasn’t enough costumers to keep busy.
So we have three main theories: Sponge, Mirror, Battery. The difference between the first and last being that the sponge only has to be in the area, whilst a battery must be targeted with the power (It’s my party and I’ll specify if I wanna) All of these would have examples in comics. But only one of Sydney’s powers is supposed to be a secret… Discounting the fact she used it once already. So she charges forward with her image forming in front of her just outside of her shield. If he is a battery, the image will fade as it hit him. If he is a sponge, well he already _has_ both. But if he is a mirror, well then his power could make him into an energy form that a light based projection could pass through. And then Sydney’s forcefield arrives as a fast secondary, bouncing his form away as he suddenly has less mass than a featherweight like –well– Sydney. Someone like him with powers like those invokes the old Superman effect –he would never have learned to fall without hurting himself…
And then the gas grenades set off behind him (Harem) come into play. They were not directed at him, so his power does not trigger. _He_ entered the area, not the other way round.
Scotto, remember Sydney’s powers are not standard “super” but are external artifact (alien, magic… unknown). DT may not be able to Sponge, Mirror, Battery her orbs.
Also, we’re not sure about DT’s power is automatic or at will and how long to takes to acquire or activate.
They are apparently not conventional super, magic, or psychic as far as Dabbler and Gwen can ascertain. (No determinable magic or psychic signature, They glow but no radiation emitted which should be impossible) Granted Conventional super is pretty much unknown too so I suppose it could be that. Dabbler might be holding back, and Sydney may also know more then she is letting on. That story about the Keys being where she found them seems deceptive.
Max certainly knows how to make an entrance
And knows how to win the mental game by playing up her power level when she does so.
(Example: In her last panel this page, it’s obvious she’s just a woman. You can hit a woman (theoretically :P). But silhouetting herself against the moon, not letting her eyes be seen, causing that dust and debris cloud when she landed… That’s no longer a person. That is a friggin’ superhero you’re about to pick a fight with. So you just gotta ask yourself one question, punk. ‘Do you feel lucky?’)
I was joking a few strips ago when I said about mistake in top right where it says unaffected by any attack since verbal ones hit him…..
“Baldric, you wouldn’t recognize a cunning plan if it painted itself purple and danced naked upon a harpsichord, singing ‘Cunning plans are here today.'”
WHOO HOO!
I had to read 484 comments, for the above comic, to confirm it, but I am the one who gets to claim the Easter Egg!
*holds up paw*
Can I haz a scooby snack? Nobody spotted this from August last year, up until now. But I did find it before Easter! I did, yup, me!
*wags tail energetically*
I hereby nominate DaveB for the Sherlock Holmes award for concealment!
I think I see what you are referring to, but I am not sure if I am looking at the right thing. It’s driving me a bit crazy lol.
He he. I know what you mean. But it is totally logical. I even speculated that this would happen, waaay back. I love that it actually does play out the way I hoped. It is totally consistent with the other, similar example we have seen before.
And it will give the visual effects teams and director goose bumps, when they realise the implications, for their work, when making the Grrl Power movies.
I, for one, have no idea what you are referring to.
I will give everyone a chance to figure it out. No point me jumping in and spoiling it, for those who want to spot it themselves. But will point it out, if nobody else has, before the next comic goes up.
Huh well, there is one thing I think it might be but I’ll shut up till the “big reveal” on Sunday. Wouldn’t want to spoil everyone’s fun. Be funny if when we all compare notes the intense scrutiny has revealed 2 potential hidden eggs.
Thanks this’ll drive me nuts until monday. Is it the moon, that thing flying at dabler, the fact that the one guy’s nose looks like a penis? :D
I believe I know what you’re talking about. Never was much of a commentor, though, so the discovery went unnoticed.
Really should fix that, what with so many people here being so cool :)
It seems those of us who spot “it” are all keeping quiet though. A sort of secret club for those with an eye for details?
Welcome to the club. We could build a club-house! Anyhow, I am sure drinks and light refreshments will be provided shortly. But nice to have another spotter here :)
I’m torn between claiming responsibility for whatever it is whether I intended it or not, and the possibility that Yorp is making up that he sees something just to see how many people he can get to say they found it too. :)
Aaaah, your spoiling it with your insider knowledge! I realized belatedly that we were in that sweet zone that’s far enough away to calm suspicion but close enough that one could still sort of kind of claim early April Fools fun. I was gonna let him have his fun till the big reveal but no I didn’t see anything.
I am shocked! How could anyone think I may be playing an April Fools prank?
Hey I probably would have looked even longer if I hadn’t done this same joke to my buddy about half a year back. ‘Cept in my version I made them think they had added something unintentionally/subconsciously wild and possibly obscene to THEIR OWN DRAWING. I made them stare at their own drawing for days. I think its been long enough for me to have built up enough trust for another go…. heehee
Ok, here is the big reveal. Well the hidden reveal. I would not want to spoil it for anyone who wants to have a last look themselves.
The Reveal:
The Tentacle Orb, in Halo’s right hand, in the final panel, no longer has it’s normal blue tentacle pattern! Check out the first panel to see the difference.
Supporting Evidence:
This is not the similar-looking force field orb. It is a different shade, plus it lacks the inner white cloud-like effect that you can see in the Who’s who. Plus panels 1 and 7 show that Halo must be holding the Forb in her left hand, as the right hand holds the True Sight Orb initially. Then swaps it for the Tentacle Orb.
In panel 7 you can still, if you zoom in, make out the blue tentacle in the orb.
The tentacle is in close proximity to the visible orb, in Halo’s right hand. This is consistent with it’s behaviour whenever we see it elsewhere. We never see it coming from the Forb, for example.
Implications:
The blue we normally see in the Tentacle Orb is not a pattern. It probably is the tentacle itself! And I am guessing that it wiggles around, rather than just sitting still. Likewise the energy in the PPO probably crackles around.
There are other implications too, but I will let folks come to those, as they may.
That’s what I thought: empty ball :)
Yorp, I’m very sorry but that is not new at all. I’m unable to check right now but I recall that that was clearly visible since the very first time Sydney used the balls. DaveB even pointed it out at the time in his comment about the telepresence ball.
Each time Sydney used one of the three balls with “content”, it was depicted without it.
Are you sure that nobody commented it? Seems unlikely.
Agggg!!! I failed to do the Spoiler :((
We did indeed know it about the telepresence orb. That did not follow that it applied to all of the orbs though. Does the PPO loose it’s inner energy when firing? Does the Forb’s inner cloud come out, to form the force field?
If Dave’s comments confirmed that it applied to the others though, then fair enough. I either missed that, or forgot about it.
Uh, I am in a hurry but back then I read the ballroom pages in a row during my initial catch up, I recall that first glorious panel with all the balls and its patterns cleary visible, I stare at it several minutes, two page later Syd used the tentacle, right next she used the telepresence and Dave pointed out the inner ball “leaving” the big one and that obviously make you think about the recent tentacle, check it, and “voila” the tentacle ball had no it either. Much later Syd used the PPO and it do lose its normal lightning pattern, replacing it with a hole that I took as the emiter, I recall people commenting it and I always thought that they must have commented about the first two as well but I did not read the comments of the early pages at all, nor a lot of the later ones, so actually I don’t know.
You are right about the three ones with a cloud though, they seems not be altered during its activation. The remain one (flight) has no visible pattern. Now that you stress it admittedly I never thought about a generic rule for them all that explain it.
I am throwing this raw, hope it do not sound rude. Also sorry about the painful read, no time to check gramar or syntax, just wanted to answer.
Cool. I have never noticed the emitter. Aha. It is actually a detail, on my login page! *
Talk about hiding things, in plain sight! I bet I am not alone in having missed stuff like that.
* The one that I navigate to Grrl Power with, that is.
Sometimes, if people don’t comment on something, it isn’t because they didn’t notice. Sometimes they just didn’t think it was worth commenting on.
Also, I fail at hyperlinks.
PPO Firing
Forcefield activating
Active Forb up close
See I thought it was that little barely visible thing beneath Dabbler’s sword in panel 1, near the curb. Looks like a dog head >>
Yes, although DaveB has been used a fixed picture for each ball (*) in my mind they are animated too. Even the flight one continually changes its shades :)
Also I imagine them translucent, like DaveB drew them in the first appearance and a handful more times.
(*) They look always the same: pattern, shades, highlights, etc, with few exceptions.
All that build-up for something that I had seen but dismissed as old news…
We see that with the comm ball and lots of other people had mentioned it so I assumed it was no big deal that all the orbs change when in use.
Point taken. But, in my defence, the comm ball thing was very obvious. We could see the small inner orb going outside. It’s size does not change. Whereas my reveal is something very different, being a teeny tentacle, inside the orb, growing to being a big tentacle outside.
I even theorised it might happen, but until we actually saw it, we did not know for sure. And, given that nobody has pointed out an earlier example, this appears to be the first time it has been visible.
So I still feel happy that it was as worthy of pointing out as any of the other small details we notice each week. More so, as it has long-term implications, in that it gives us a better insight into one aspect of the orbs.
For instance we can now predict something, assuming that DaveB remains as consistent as he has been so far.
PROBABLE SPOILER ALERT:
Namely, that the mystery orbs will not manifest something with a physical effect. We have seen them both, up close, and they have no corresponding item within them.
So until somebody had pointed out that we now have a very clear pattern of behaviour, such a prediction could not be made, with such a degree of confidence. Sometimes it is worth commenting on the subtle stuff!
To be absolutely fair it do is visible before, as I said: the very first time Syd used the tentacle (#90) and more notoriously here: https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/589 (last three panels).
Once again yours still seems to be the first time somebody commented on it.
I do not agree.
First only three balls change when in use, not all of them (*). Also the truesight ball has two different powers and change with only one of them. Also the three changes are not identical. There is NOT an obvious link or anything.
Second, I called it old news cause I was always assumed that the topic had been commented at the time, it seemed too relevant to do not, but now Yorp’s claim that nobody commented it before appears to be true, I said I didn’t, you said you didn’t, and no one else is raising their hand either.
It’s not fair to claim something without proofs, but even if true we all do shut so Yorp still did the discovery totally on his own and does not deserve contempt.
Besides, knowing this community I do think that if anybody had noticed it at the time, they surely would have pointed it out.
Yorp, well spotted, let’s see where it leads us.
(*) leaving asaid the “holographic controls” four of them had showed and presumably all of them have.
