Grrl Power #243 – Taking all comers
Jiggawatt’s telebot (arc jump?) is her big hit, but it’s also sort of a high commitment attack, especially against an unknown like (FWT)Death Toll. Punching him sure doesn’t work. It’s not clear if she saw him zap Anvil either, otherwise she might not have tried to lightning him.
Some people in the comments are starting to piece Death Toll together, and this page will obviously fuel more speculation. We’ll see if the team figures it out before Sydney does.
Part of doing this comic involves tapping in to my nerd knowledge to drop in some pop culture nods or sneak in an obtuse reference to something. I’ve put in references everything from Thundercats and Krull to Invader Zim and Phineas and Ferb. Keeping my nerd cred current can be a bit tricky. I can watch Netflix or whatever while I draw, since that’s 90% listening and glancing occasionally at the screen when some actor says “look at this amazing thing which you have to see to understand and which I’m not going to describe verbally!” I am a bit down on my anime consumption since most of it is subbed and I can’t draw and read subtitles at the same time. The most recent thing I’ve watched is the first 8-12 episodes of Attack on Titan, since from about a year ago you couldn’t go anywhere on the internet without seeing some reference to it. Cartoons in general, even if they’re in English (dubbed or native) are harder to watch while I draw cause they tend to move along faster than sitcoms or other long form TV shows like your CSIs and Person of Interest or whatever, and that makes me glance up at the TV more often which slows me down.
I play about 10% as much video games as I used to as well, which is fine since most everything is sequels or remakes these days. I’ve played all of an hour of Minecraft, but that’s all you really need in order to get it. I don’t like MMOs because of the heavy time requirements, also the total lack of player agency. It’s hard to feel like you’ve accomplished anything when the boss you just beat respawns 15 seconds later and on your way back to town you pass 30 people on their way to kill the same guy. Nope, give me single player, co-op single player, or straight up multiplayer, deathmatch and fighting games and the like.
Most recently I made the mistake of installing DOTA2, since I had never played a MOBA before. I get why it’s so popular now, so mission accomplished, but holy crap am I awful at it. One game I played ended with almost everyone on my team being twice my level. I know, there’s a lot to learn and there are a million guides and early game tutorials out there, but again like with MMOs, the time commitment would be enormous. I’m glad I played it, the game world seems like an environment Dabbler would be comfortable in. I could totally see a Dabbler hero in it, but I may have to uninstall it before it sucks up any more of my time.
Comic was broke but now it’s fixed. I’m just testing the admin function really.
<— If you enjoy the comic, consider supporting it via Patreon. Or buy something via the Amazon referral link. Or do both.
She’ll grab his cape with her tentacle orb and pull him off his feet and up in the air where he cannot maneuver. He either won’t be able to unfasten the cape or will break free only to have the impact (which was self-inflicted) hurt him (and possibly showing indirect attacks are the way to take him out).
That’s what I thought was going to happen in today’s comic, actually.
I was thinking, “If she’s able to lift him up, just lift him all the way to outer space.” But then I remembered, non-lethal. Sadness.
Anyway, if Anvil couldn’t pick him up, I’m not sure why Sydney would be able to. The cape tugging on him is still kinetic force that he can resist.
i wonder if he’s weak against martial artists like math?
You didn’t read the guy’s description within the glasses HUD. Resistant to Physical and Kinetic. All Math would be able to do would be to act like an annoying fly to the guy.
you might be wrong; I suspect the description is a bit off.
I think he’s an amazo/ rogue- absorbing people’s powers.
if you look, everything he is doing is borrowed from someone else
which is why IMO he started this fight.. he’s here to steal everyone’s powers
so Math/ Peggy may well be the best bet
Everything except the ice blast in panel two – that indicates his power is more of a “perfect counter for everything”. If that’s the case, then Math would probably be just as “unable to hit” – though as he showed with Sydney on page 133, you don’t have to hit someone (or even attack them) to beat them.
Unless he managed to steal an “allies” power off screen by standing in the way of their attack on Maxima or something.
its possible he can mimic an ability he has seen as well, Dabbler froze Heavly Sword with Ice magic : https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/1377
Good point – and if that’s where it came from, he’s using it back on the person who he copied it from.
Or he just absorbs energy– All types of energy, including kinetic (armor effect) and heat (ice creation) then shoots the energy back (in the case of kinetic this can imitate enhanced strength)
I’m willing to bet Math could work around that. He’s good enough that if a direct attack doesn’t work, he’ll find an indirect.
Math did counter it once already, when fighting Anvil. He tickled her with his foot to force her to release the choke hold that she had on him. He’s able to counter super’s abilities… just not boobs. As this guy doesn’t seem to have any, it could work.
Yet I have a feeling that this is finally Sydney’s moment to shine…
Since Math is currently dreaming of topless wahines in Pago-Pago, Halo is the last hope. Scary huh?
HOLY SHIT
I’m gonna go for broke on this: He’s an Anti-AMAZO.
For those who don’t know, AMAZO is an android who can mimic the powers of any super-being he comes across, and in different incarnations can either recall the powers of one at a time, or use all at once.
“Death Toll” does something similar: His suit automatically* counter-acts anything thrown at him, and changes to adapt. The team is going to have to hit him from 3 sides with 3 different types of attacks to have any hope of overcoming his defenses.
Short of that, and indirect attack. Or, if they insist on defeating him with karma, something to make his armor weaker or counter-productive to his health… I know, splash a Base compound at him: His suit will turn to acid to neutralize it, scalding him in the process and forcing him to abandon the suit for fear of his life =)
*Or it may have been programmed on-the-fly, hence why he stood back and watched until now.
Something else I’m thinking about this, if it were true- automatic things in a fight are usually bad. I’m specifically thinking of a comic in which an enemy had an enchanted suit of armor that would automatically counter an attack by teleporting him behind the person who attacked him, so he could backstab- it was defeated when she pressed her back to a wall and took a tiny little swing at him, causing him to implant himself in the wall.
A little off-topic but I found a page that might interest anyone who liked 80’s and 90’s comics. At the con’s Wendy Pini would ask other artists to draw elves for her and the result is this:
https://www.nerfnow.com/comic/1363
Even as ignorant as I am about who drew what back then I recognized many styles. It was a real trip down memory lane.
Umm, no elves on that page
ok , heres my theory about his power : he gets the powers of all the defeated/unconcious/”death” supers
most people seem to assume that he has an adaptativa/reative power because till now nothing has affected him ,but before Anvil no one tried to attack him and he stayed out of the fight even tought he shows to enjoy it
now hes pratically the last one of his side sttanding and with around 30 combined powersets he should be more than capable of countering pratically anything they throw at him and yet he seens to still be containing himself so as to not tip his hand
He deflected some throwing knives and stuff earlier in the fight, it just wasn’t focused on.
I checked and the only thing he deflected was concretia ,and tough he was also unafected by hex lasers by then enough had hapened for that to be inconclusive
also he has yet to show any ability that can’t be related to someone whose power was show or hinted at previously and has since been rendered incapacitated
I’m not sure I’ve seen a “turn to copper” super here yet but OK, so that means you use the chemical babysitting devices to rouse every prisoner around for just a split moment and thump the now deflated For Whom the Death Tolls in the face? Doesn’t feel like the Sydney moment Dave is working up to…
Ack! No fair. Once the comments hit 3 pages the comic went away!!!
Now I can’t verify my suspicion that right hand is “counter/reverse” while left hand is absorb…
Is that a thing? If the comments hit 3 pages the comic disappears? I can’t see it either. It’s very disappointing :(
i can’t see the comic with and it is so frustrating with such an interesting conversation going on about
It was up earlier (obviously!), don’t know what happened to it. DaveB?
I was looking at it while there was 2 pages of comments, but when I refreshed it showed 3 and no comic in with my comic as it were. So I said at 3 pages. Maybe DaveB took it down to fix something pointed out as an error?
I was wondering what happened. I was worried that it was no-script blocking things, and enabled everything but the known trackers… to no avail. I’m not sure weather to be happy it’s not me or sad that it’s them.
Who knows. Stupid computers with all their 1’s and 0’s, think they’re so great.
Anyway should be fixed now.
It’s those darn 2’s sneaking in again. Remnants of DOS you know,,,,
So I see tons of comments but no actual comic. Is this on my end or…?
Since people were commenting about the comic till about 5:30 (central) and after 6 every comment is about it being down, and I can’t see it either, I’m assuming something happened between there.
So if you switch to internet explorer (GASP SHOCK LOUD CRY) it works. Chrome? Not so much. Have not attempted firefox.
I can’t see a comic for today
I can’t see a comic either, so I’m going to assume they ripped off Death Toll’s mask and it turned out he was the prophet Muhammad.
I can’t see it either. Which is doubly frustrating since it is not showing up on my RSS feed yet either. {sigh}
I did finally start getting RSS updates again after the move, but they show up a day late every time.
I was trying to figure out why your screen name was highlighted until I saw where it linked to and remembered I had the Bookmark Highlighter add-on for Firefox. =OP
I kind of like the idea that he is a collector. It would be cool if it were something along the line of “can use this power until X amount uses have passed”. So this is his way of gathering a number of powers he can use quickly. He already has a nice spread from his wannabes. Get enough together and he would be set for a long time –and guarantee that any remaining heroes would eventually seek him out.
If so, he should have been called “Tipping Point”
The image has changed to a single pixel 1×1 image, which is not likely to be what the rest of you saw. Don’t know if it was caused by the size of the comments as theorized above, but it’s really annoying to us late-comers.
That’s what I am seeing also, just a single bright pixel on the blue-grey background.
Like so:
https://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/Kompera/GrrlPower243_pixel_zps836b07d0.jpg
I can’t seem to load the comic for today’s/Monday’s strip. The comments, “previous” and “next” type buttons are there and working. Does anybody have any suggestions?
P.S. Been reading the strip since almost the beginning and this is probably my all time favorite comic. Keep up the good work!
So now that the picture is only 1×1 pixel how do us late comers see it?
As all of the rest of the latecomers, I can’t see a thing. I tried opening the image in a new tab (clicking on a single pixel takes some effort as it turns out… ) but no, the image itself has been replaced with a single white pixel, not merely some code on the page forcing the picture into a 1×1 dot.
yep, can’t the picture, had to avoid the comments and the text under the picture to not be spoiled
hope it will be fixed soon :)
ok, this is weird. The comic is a 1 pixel white dot. And I loaded it from the image source URL in the page source code: https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/comics/2014-08-25-GP0243.jpg
seems to be fixed now.
Can’t see the picture, source code not working either
Seeing some interesting theories about this guy, I was thinking an energy thief…which he still could be; thinking of that “Fourth Wave” guy from Needless who figured out that through energy absorption and release he could also create ice, flames, and mess with the air pressure to produce wind. He was found out because he had to do them in the same order each time to produce the other effects.
However he could be a mimic/mirror or a Nemesis-Mimic, but then we have the guy from the beginning of this series in the game Halo was playing; having someone’s powers isn’t the same thing as knowing how to use those powers. Give what he did to Jiggawat is suspicious he would be copying her, and a Nemesis for electricity being to capture and re-direct is possible, but he’d figure it out immediately (unless he has practiced it on a certain fellow attacker *I hesitate to call these people team mates as some have shown signs of just showing up there that night*.
Although it does seem he does indeed have to be looking at or else pointing his hand at someone to use his powers. So a surprise attack, a none-physical attack, or multi-dimensional attack are still on the table to work against him (writing that makes me think of those annoying anti-life enemies in RPGs where any attack heals them as they always use the negative mirror aspect to being damaged; which makes healing spells harm them as its automatic).
Of course an alternative is secondary effects, how good is he against being blown into the air with wind or the ground opening up beneath him. In fact wind should be really effective against a Nemesis-mimic; what is the opposite of wind? a Vacuum; but if you produce a vacuum this draws air into it, so if you open a vacuum in front of you it will only speed up the wind towards you, and unless you can make a gravity well much of that wind will whip around and still hit you. and Gravity is not the opposing force of wind (it would be the opposing force of Hyper-force/levitation type power).
Ahem.
He’s an energy absorber/converter, as I said before. The way to beat him is simple.
Grease.
Force Field.
Offer the chance to surrender or sleepy gas gets added in.
Yeah, so far it looks like he can’t do much about air. Sydney could grab a sleeping gas thingy from Dabbler (surely she has one), get both Death Toll and herself inside her forcefield bubble, and set it off, knocking them both out.
Most people are thinking that this guy is either a power absorber or has counter power that gives him a great response to anything. There is a HUGE problem with these ideas. He has made no attempt to draw fire during this battle. He is delighted to have people attacking him but has not taunted, assumed a threatening posture or moved into attacks. Admittedly he probably does not care about any of his “teammates” and may be convinced that he can win on his own. Perhaps his power is based on magic and he loses it if he provokes someone to attack.
Overt demonstrations of such power negate the strategic advantages of having it. Letting himself get hit without calling attention to the fact lets him build up a decent pool of powers before anyone catches on. He can play it off as invulnerability until he has to drain someone directly or someone pulls something like the telebolt.
I agree, as soon as someone knows its one of these two they can think of ways to counter it. But the effects during a battle can be vague enough to make your opponents think you have a different power; like the guy from Needless who through clever use of the energy had his opponents convinced he had fire, ice, and wind powers when he was just absorbing and releasing heat (using it to affect air pressure with dramatic changes in temperatures as well).
He’s basically the in-comic version of a web troll. He only feels powerful when people pay attention to them. Remember people: “Don’t feed the trolls!”
yep, he is totally an absorber/converter
simpliest way to beat him is to not attack him, he cannot do anything if he isn’t targeted
Not quite so simple any more that he has some stuff from before to work with but make him exhaust them too and you’re there.
Hell, just siily putty him…like they did to Mr. Incredible.
Many people think that a force field would be effective against him. I doubt this for several reasons. One is that I think that if a force field were used to capture him he would develop a field breaking ability. Two is that the only known force field producer is Halo and DaveB has specifically stated that her field is always centered on her. She might be able to capture him as long as she did not attack him directly but she would be trapped with a man twice her size who she can not use any super ability to attack.
What is wrong with you people ? Death Toll is an energy sponge he absorbs energy and can either release it or use it to power his strength/endurance/ flight. check the difference between when hex hits max and when she hit DT it doesn’t bounce off it soaks in.
After reading no comments, I’d say his power is mostly energy absorbtion/redirection on an almost universal level, apparently with the ability to modify himself to better conduct said energy.
his… costume changed while holding her, and changed back as he released. Also, it seems, though maybe not, that his sleeve got darker when he absorbed that punch a page or two ago.
Noticed that too. So maybe it’s his costume? We’ll see.
I noticed that the only thing that DIDNT change was that mask he is wearing. Even the cape changed. Maybe we have another artifact on our hands?
Hmmm at first I, was thinking that he has some variety of active/reactive armor or ability but that sort of power doesn’t lend itself well to a villainous career path. It also doesn’t seem to mesh with his choice of name or his combat style thus far. His strategy and ability use almost makes me wonder if this is his version of a job interview, or perhaps he doesn’t know all of what he is capable of and is using the fight to test out abilities that would be difficult to discover outside of combat. His attitude almost seems to say “its nothing personal” as though this isn’t really his fight. For many of our would be villains their motivations seem to be fairly clear something along the lines of trying top prove themselves tougher than the local sheriff, but FWTDT’s motivations are unclear. His ability use doesn’t seem to have caused any lasting harm to anyone and his name and his speech patterns and name choice seem more academic than villainous. It makes me wonder if he was perhaps hired as a professional “team evaluator”. On the other hand he could be keeping his truly offensive powers or variants close to the chest, and might go on the attack after he verifies the threat posed by the ARCSWAT team. I am curious how he our his abilities will react to Halo/Sydney considering she doesn’t actually know all of her powers.
Maybe the secret is to not do anything that would actually hurt him. Don’t attack him just massively inconvenience him. Achilles and Halo are ideal for this.
Oooh! Sydney should totally activate a mystery ORB and target him with it, The reverse would be a clue to the power.
Gotta tell ya Dave, I love Star trek Online, lots of fun for me. But it is the first MMO I have ever really played (playing for a few years now), I tried a few out, but never stuck with them for long.
Keep up the great work on the comic.
Haven’t played STO in a couple years, keep meaning to go back, but just get busy with other games/webics
The second expansion is coming out soon, the first was Legacy of Romulus, which included the playable Romulan Faction, this one will be Delta Rising (set in the Delta Quadrant), and is going to include the first level cap increase the game has seen among other things. They also got Michael Dorn (Worf) and Tim Russ (Tuvok, also one of the guys “combing the desert” in Spaceballs), to voice their Trek characters for missions. Word is that Delta Rising is going to also have Garret Wang (Harry Kim, who has finally gotten some promotions) and some other ST:Voyager cast members voices as well, probably not Kate Mulgrew (Janeway) or Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) as those two would likely be too expensive, but Robert Picardo (The Doctor), & Robert Beltran (Chakotay) are quite possible.
Of course if you don’t like Voyager that may not appeal to you, but that is what is coming up,
I wonder how “breaking” the ground underneath him and pouring concrete up to his neck would work?
This is the first clear indication that he’s “absorbing” and not just highly resistant. Remember Anvil didn’t acutally say anything about “feeling drained”, she just crumpled when FWTDT caught her punch. Energy lech is marked with a question mark, since intel team isn’t sure (until now).
He’s also deliberately catching with his hands/gloves. While he shocked Anvil there we can’t be 100% sure where that shock started from. I think most of us were assuming the cape/costume as a whole, but it could have started from just the gloves.
So we know he can “shock” and “ice” from at least his gloves without external input.
I think the trick will be to hit him without letting him get a “hand” in the way. Also, not announcing your going to “telebolt” him would help. Announcing attacks is for the “Animez and da Mangaz”. A good lighting-hooking would do. Although a follow up question would be what his absorption would do to Halo’s shield if she made full speed contact… with flight… at high speed… from the blind side.
Although to be fair, so far all he’s really done is resist arrest and hasn’t ‘really’ hurt anyone on the team yet. Even Anvil wasn’t actually ‘injured’. And he’s only been responding with equivalent or lesser force. Still not go, and he’d be looking at some jail time, but no where near what some of the others are looking at.
Wait, why would he be looking at jail time? I don’t believe it’s a crime to wear a bad costume and stand in the middle of a fight, regardless of who’s fighting.
DT hadn’t actually broken any laws. As far as I saw from a legal standpoint, Anvil told him to surrender when he wasn’t doing anything, which would basically be the same thing as a cop asking you to turn around so he could put handcuffs on you when you hadn’t done anything but watch two gangs fighting. Then she attacked him when he said no and he used self-defense.
Arianna might be able to get some odd form of resisting arrest maybe, but again, he still didn’t do anything worthy of being arrested in the first place.
Actually, it’d be kind of funny if his entire reason for being there is just to get ARCSwat in trouble legally. Also a pretty dick move, but clearly not a bad one. Anvil really should’ve known better.
In a riot situation ( I think we agree this would qualify) everyone present is subject to arrest. Saying “No” is resisting arrest. “Defending himself” is Assault and Battery on a Police Officer (multiple counts). Using high voltage electricity (Jiggawatt) is Attempted Murder, capturing Jiggawatt in the first place is Kidnapping and Unlawful Imprisonment. There are probably a few more counts against him, but that’s enough to get started.
I would think Attempted Murder and Kidnapping and Unlawful Imprisonment would would be difficult charges to make stick. On the Kindnapping charge it gets more than little gray when the person and the weapon/attack are one and the same, and she was rather promptly “released”. Attempted Murder can also be called into question with intent. Is it Attempted Murder if the target of your attack is super-human invulnerable with no chance of death, and you know it? That could be argued down to Assault and Battery.
So Resisting Arrested and multiple charges of Assault and Battery on a Police Officer. Still looking better than some others so far. Even if he’s being an arrogant peacock about it.
Still, I think the point he was making is that he had already committed jail-able offenses by the time she attacked him.
La, la, la. They can’t hear you, anifreik. Forever in their minds, Archon (and, by extension, Anvil) should have let a potential threat stand in the middle of the fight, never mind that he could easily hurt or kill one or more of them if he had a weapon or offensive superpower.
BTW, I would think it would fall under “failure to follow a lawful order” than “resisting arrest”.
She uses the tentacle to hogtie him, lifts him up, then spins him overhead until he passes out due to the g-forces.
I like how you think.
So, here is my guess.
All the team heavy hitters keep getting swatted by Bell Toller so, in steps Halo / Sydney with one of the ‘unknown’ orbs and poof — he is open to any good sock to the jaw… say with a telekinetic tentacle… or ‘just’ a speeding orb to the nose (or crotch).
It’s his mask. It works in much the same way as the glasses do for the hero team. He sat back and watched and assessed each of the team members before getting involved in anyway. The mask is also what allows him to alter into the required format for absorbing/counter attacking anything that comes his way. Out of all his transformations the mask is the only thing that has stayed truly constant.
He’s an energy absorber that can release that energy later, rather like Vince in Drew Hayes’s Super Powereds stories. First he absorbed the kinetic energy, then the lightning energy, then he released the lightning energy, and he could later release the kinetic energy. I don’t know about the apparent cold blast, however, unless cold is considered an energy in this world or perhaps that “cold” was just him absorbing the fire (thermal energy) coming at him.
I’m thinking this guy absorbs energy (electricity here and also heat, causing cold and ice creation), then can use the energy he absorbed, usually as a blast, but in the case of kinetic energy as enhances strength bursts.
Panel 2: It should be spelled “Leech.” Leach appears to be how you make coffee, among other things.
