Grrl Power #209 – Dramatic speed lines ensue!
As I said under the previous page, I wasn’t happy with the action on it, so I went and flipped through a few pages of artists I consider the gold standard for such things, namely Masahiko Nakahira, responsible for several Street Fighter related manga and Yūsuke Murata who draws One Punch Man. This page is the result and I have to say I’m pleased with it. It’s not on their level, but I’m not going to improve that much in one page. Math’s back spin summer-assault kick in the second panel is partially an homage to Nakihara’s depiction of Guile’s Flash Kick from the Cammy Manga, which you can see here. I saw no way to improve on that, so I flipped Math around for his move. I guess his boots are steel heeled as well as steel toed.
I still see many ways the action on this page could be better, especially panel six, the one with Concretia getting knocked out of building. There’s a lot going on in that one, and part of drawing good action is making it clear what’s happening. We’ve all seen manga full of speed lines, bursts, explosions and what have you, and while a single panel may look dramatic, if there’s no flow then it’s leaving money on the table. Panel six really should have been broken down to make clear what’s happening, one of her exploding from the building, and another of her flying toward the guy with the cowl before he smacks her aside, but then this update would have been three pages tall. I’m not necessarily opposed to doing that, but there are time constraints to consider.
Here’s a conundrum for you. If you throw a punch, what do you do with a kick? Kick a kick? Swing a kick? Jump, slide, toss, shimmy? English is weird.
In case you missed it, I’m doing a series of guest strips over at GynoStar. The first one is still up, the next one should be up on Thursday, which I’ll link when the next page goes up.

It appears Math uses the deadliest of martial arts styles: Krav Manga.
Not exactly the Deadliest. But it does put the “Overkill” into “make certain your enemy is incapacitated or dead”. Because if he is not after the first 2 actions, the other 12 will propably do him in.
Hey, in life-or-death situations, I cite Maxim 37. And in martial arts, you generally don’t need to reload.
Whereas I cite ‘scardy-cat runaway’. Or ‘hit them over the head with a big stick’. No reloading ever required.
Plus no chance of getting shot with my own gun. That and the odds of actually needing a gun, in this country, are so small that the former risk is statistically more likely than dying from any other gun (collectively, not individually).
But he didn’t need to transform and charge for 17 minutes. He hasn’t yet mastered this style.
Math doesn’t need to transform, he stays in his super mode 24/7. It’s why he has yellow spiky hair.
They can do that? Why don’t they always?
Drama.
Imagine hanging around with a caffeine high, a sugar rush, and adrenaline pumping through you 24/7. It’s just not a comfortable state y’know?
Speak for yourself.
It is great.
The answer to this is explained fully in one of the Tiffany Aching novels – Wintersmith, maybe? I recommend all three in any case.
I think he knows every style there is, and mixes it around depending on what’s needed
Like some kind of “Anything-goes Martial Arts” style? ^_^
Studied under the great Bruce Lee
Or follows the words of Egg Shen.
” … We take what we want and leave the rest, just like your salad bar. “
but he doesn’t have any known curses activated through water
Sort of, but with less running away than certain practitioners tend to do. (Think Genma Soun or Saotome Genma.)

well played, ser
Seconded. Cleverly done. I should have applauded it earlier.
I see what you did there… ;)
Another tactical note: If I were Sydney and I were sidelined during a fight this big, I’d definitely have one of my unknown orbs in my spare hand.
I mean, where better to get a reaction out of things that have failed to act so far than a crazy free-for-all?

Zis iz ze infamous orb #6, ze orb that drains ze life force from any wounded creature or person, turning zem instantly to dust.
It has been used exactly once, and cured Math of his bruised Knuckle. Behold, ze orb called Mathless.
Zis iz ze infamous orb #7 zat uses ambient power to generate a light lense. do not, i repeat, do not expose to high order powers, az zat causes it to generate a stable warp field. Which iz why Florida iz now on Mars, and ze North American east coast iz… experiencing much “fun” az eet sinks into ze ocean. Behold ze orb called Homeless.
Use proper care when testing orbs. Could be a cousin to the pew pew orb in there.
And what if the orb suddenly nukes away the restaurant and everyone including or excluding Halo?
Also is Max throwing Achilles at the bad guys there? xD
*shrugs* There are more bad guys present than good. So it would be a win. And if the mystery orbs do that, it would get Halo whenever she tried it, so it is not like it would be any less risky for her now, compared to doing it solo sometime.
That aside though, we have seen that the orbs have various safety features, so it is unlikely that they are intrinsically harmful like that.
Usually I see kicks referred to as being fired or launched, and getting set for one as chambering a kick. You know, like a gun.
Hilarious comic, by the way- I’ve been reccomending it to my freinds since I saw a page linked on SpaceBattles.
Agreed, I believe the accepted term for ” a kick” is “launch”.
Several panels ago we saw Sydney make Peggy launch just not a kick, but her whole leg.
(note to author: PLEASE let her keep some sort of super secret super weapon in there)
Actually, “Chambering” a kick is what you call it when you have your leg moving into the kick with your knee bent, ready to extend outwards. You also use the same word for cocking your arm back for a punch.
At least, in American taekwondo schools, that’s what it’s called. Everywhere else I’ve seen just calls it, “That thing you do to make sure you don’t snap your leg off at the knee.”
More than 500 comments and less than 48 hours since posting! And it appears Sydney has the superpower of biting sarcasm.
So, Math`s hitting on the ladies again.
Literally, this time.
You “Launch” a kick, just so you know proper pulp terminology.
I’m still not sure what trajectory his foot had!
Sweeps her legs, then kicks up? Apparently doing a frontflip in the mean time, without taking his hands out of his pockets.
that at least makes some sense; i was pretty confused
actually Dave has described somewhere that what has happened is Math Pivoted facing away from her then kicked behind him simultaneously doing a front flip.
While Math’s trajectory indicates a jumping flip-kick, to achieve the massive vertical knock-back (sorry – just can’t bring myself to call it a “knock-up”) he produced, he’d more likely strike from a solid base, so I think he executed a vertical kick, then flipped back to position himself for the follow-up strike (and provide dramatic emphasis, of course)
Groan… Statuesque, stone skinned.
Took a while to get that.
When I read the first panel, it keeps reminding me of a scene in one of the Karate Kid movies. Where the kid is complaining to his master, that he should show him how to chop through bricks. To which his master replies “Why, a brick has never attacked me?”
Obviously that guy does not live in a world with super heroes. Here, Math is literally under threat of attack by a ‘brick’.
i SO see vegeta (hope i spelled that right) anyone else concur?
Yup, Math either watched the shows and ‘copied’ the look, or he is Vegetable-heads ancestor
In my personal headcanon, Concretia calls him “Groucho” not merely because of the line, but because he’s doing the voice.
Oooo, didn’t think of that, but that makes sense (even if he doesn’t have the eyebrows to wraggle or the fake moustache that Mr Marx started out with)
Mmmm….tasty, crunchy sound effects! Also, I *always* read Math’s lines in Groucho voice. Doesn’t everyone?
From the looks of it the soles of maths boots made contact as he did his back flip…and since most safety boots are both steel (or composite) toe with a steel shank inside the sole to protect the feet from anything that attempts to puncture the sole…pretty safe bet it was that that inflicted the same damage as the steel toe would have.
I agree with you, the action looks way better on this page and onepunchman is AWESOME
For some reason Max’s moves in this page reminds me Akira from Virtua Fighter games rather than a mix of Guile and Ryu/Ken. I wonder why maybe becuase Akira has a similar combo finisher.
aha! I finally figured out what math did in the third panel. It is a two leg maneuver, his left leg(the one not currently encased in the aura of awesome) did a leg sweep followed by some kind of flip. this explains why there are two paths from his point of origin and only one math.
You place a kick
I know this is kinda late … but … another verb for kicking is “plant”. As in, “I’ll plant a kick on his butt.” Same use of the verb as with “kiss”, oddly enough.
I think the third panel would’ve come out better if you showed Math either twisting to end up with his body facing the camera, or using speed lines to show he spun his back to “Brick Girl” then did his kick flip to chin.
Apologies if this was mentioned before.
Man, I JUST realized one of the villains is a gymnastic ribbon dancer person.
Dude, Math totally looks like Vegeta.
He is saying stuff just to sound cool.
I still have a hard time understanding panel 6. Is Concretia being teleported by robe guy? Or is he smacking her into the ground on accident? Confused.
She has fallen out of the window, at speed, bounces towards the robed guy, and he casually swats her to one side. Concretia is no more than a fly to him. All he is interested in is studying Maxima.
i don’t know if anyone answered yet but you throw a punch and you land a kick
Being a man of class and culture Math is of course also a punster.
i gotta say what crazy references, and defiently someone like yusuke murata is the world gold stardard for action sequences in a drawn medium if you are taking notes from them then i am excited for future action sequences
