Grrl Power #205 – Hyperactivity bonus vs. backstab
Apparently there was enough room between the wall and the table for a shield that large. Good thing it either automatically resets to a smaller default size or Sydney thought to reset it herself after the demonstration, where if you remember the shield was large enough to totally destroy that room if it went up in there. Her shield does form centered on her, large enough to encompass her, but will adjust itself up or down a bit not to slice off anything near her, which is why Shadow Boxer there didn’t get a haircut when her shield went up. That may be a yet undiscovered option though. Something else to note is that the orbs don’t automatically activate when Sydney grabs them, she can hold them without them turning on, but in this case it was a defensive reflex.
It was kind of tough drawing Sydney taking a real punch. Her adorkableness affects even me. Sure she’s suffered a few hits already during the course of the comic, but most of them were self inflicted except the bonk on the head at the bank, and we all know how well that went for her assailant.
I’ve groused a little about the nature of the webcomic format a little before, in that the delay between pages allows people to consider each page with far more scrutiny than they would if you’re just flipping through a finished book. As such, the resolution to Sydney’s current conundrum may not surprise much of anyone, but what can you do? Of course it works both ways, and the little gags I hide in there whenever I can are more likely to be ferreted out.
<– Supporting Grrl Power through Patreon earns you karma. Not Reddit karma, real karma, which of course is not real.
Whatever is about to happen to this ‘shadow boxer’ character, I’m guessing the security video footage will get a thousand youtube hits in the first hour after it’s uploaded. Victorious or defeated, Sydney will not go down without doing something horrifying to this guy.
And after that, potential attackers will have more to think about than Maxima’s “overkill” of the tank.
Being partly or selectively solid, you can’t rely on hitting him with any particular attack; the sneaker between his legs, the PPO blast, or even the lighthook might go straight through him without hurting him. On the other hand, Harem can’t teleport through the forcefield, so it’s likely that he can’t phase through it either. And the PPO Orb just blocked one of his attacks, so there’s a good chance he can be hit by the orbs.
This is going to go through Syd’s hyperfocused ADHD brain in about a tenth of a second – so I’m guessing the orbs and the shield itself will be her primary weapons against him starting in about two tenths of a second. I don’t know where anybody else gets with that, but to me, an analogy with a blender seems apt.
Excellent analysis. Though the lighthook would likely be made of the same energy as the field, meaning it could definitely affect him. Also, the orb was able to deflect the attack because he was trying to hit her, so his attack had to be tangible. Attacks are always vulnerable for characters that can phase or else they wouldn’t be able to do damage. If you follow Naruto, the character Obito can phase any part of his body at will, but has to solidify it to make an attack.
True enough however he is susceptible to attacks phased into his phase area with kakashi’s eye since it came from him.
I feel almost sorry for that guy… He has no idea what kinds of terror he is in for.
same thought i got as i read it ^^
“well, he’s boned.” :P
Another police report reading only “Oh the humanity” is what I sense in the near future.
Or coroner’s report… [shudder]Can you imagine what Sydney could do with her orbs’ powers in a “kill or be killed” situation?[/shudder]
As a footnote on the coroner’s report: Nothing human could cause that kind of damage.
Duh! It’ll be the orbs doing the damage!
Notice how one of her orbs blocks that mutant’s attack all on its own for itself. I dare say her orbs have a mind of their own in self defense mode.
Sydney is going to be one jacked up hot head now. She could let loose with the PPO and wreck havoc as bad as Godzilla would with that radioactive breath. Whooosh!!!! Before she is thinking straight.
Sydney has demonstrated remote control of her orbs before case i point when she jedi’d the tube from Maxima while I won’t discount the possibility of their own will it could of been a defensive flinch on Sydneys part the way you raise your hands when something comes at your face
sydney is about to go coo coo for coco puffs
I’m not sure but isn’t the orb she picked up one of the two unknown orbs? n The Purple one as a matter of fact, I don’t recall what that one does, could it be something the needs someone like shadow boxer around for it to activate? If that’s the case it could be horendous, or it could totally heal any damage done to sydney, just thinking mind you…
…no. Those are Red or Green. She clearly picked up the light blue/light purple one for the Forcefield.
The Orbs, sentient or not, are important enough characters in their own right, that they feature in the Who’s Who. On a monitor, that section should be to the right of your screen. Although, I guess, on a mobile device they may appear down the bottom.
We all know that Sidney will live through this… the question is will “Shadow boxer” survive this.
One combination Sidney has that I am sure she knows of is using the barrier/Shield orb to contain her target then using the PPO orb to neutralize the target while the barrier/shield contains the explosion.
Wouldn’t that toast Sidney too? She is on the same side of the Shield as he is.
means contain threat with sheild cause explosion inside sheild
She can fire through the shield?
Our adversary is standing in what I would like to call the classic ‘asshole a-frame’ stance. In other words, mother-open to nearly any form of attack. Also notice that her leg is right between hers, kick up for a 7-10 split! For that matter, the Mole… ahem… Lighthook can be used for that same purpose, assuming she doesn’t ‘hook his leg and test the structural integrity of the shield with his face.
The real problem I can see here is that Sydney is not the most tactically sound individual when pissed off. If her dander is up, the property damage bill and the opponent body count could exponentially spike.
He knew the job was dangerous when he took it. All of Maxima’s targets go to jail, Halo’s sole victim goes to ER. With a dislocated tongue.
No, he is much further away than you think. Look again. Sydney’s foot would never reach his leg much less his groin at this point.
Remember that the shield is up. Property damage will be minimal…but personal damage? This ain’t gonna be pretty. I DO hope however, that Sydney remembers that a mere mortal is also within that shield. >.> Let’s not forget that Harem is stuck there at the moment.
No Harem is outside the shield. Only Halo and Shadow Boxer are inside it.
Shadow guy got through probably because he can become a shadow, Sydney’s shield lets light through so obviously shadows can get through it as well. If you remember an entire argument about this kind of thing happens in the beginning of the comic. Light can pass through a non opaque force field.
So surmise that this is where Sydney gained the experience to make the argument in the beginning of the comic, which obviously happened after this as this is still part of the flashback/origins story of Halo. My guess is whatever “Lightstorm” is that Maxima told Harem to run in the previous page will probably have something to do with dealing with captain shadow.
Incorrect – both of Syd’s hands are clearly shown to be empty until Panel#6, AFTER ShadowBoxer’s first attack. The currently prevailing view amongst those of us in the “Peanut Gallery” is that while he can get through floors, Syd’s force-field is too tough for him to penetrate. Of course, the Distinguished Author may yet prove us wrong…?
It looks more like Sidney never got her shield up before he got to her. Her hands were empty, and this is seconds, if not less, after Max gave her the order to shield up.
Hard to tell without a timescale, but Sidney was never shown with the shield up after the order (until this guy was already in melee with her, of course)
This means we don’t know if he can phase through her shield, or just the floor (presuming the shield does not project into the floor) if my supposition is correct. If it can, he his, as has been stated, just as trapped as she is, though his phasing gives him some advantage, presuming the lighthook is unable to grab/pummel/slam/molest him while phased. Could be an upgrade for it as well, if it can’t right now.
and as he tries to escape first to a wall (shield stops him) then dropping to the floor we learn if the shield becomes flat at that point or projects down into the basement where shadowboxer is again stopped.
This may be true, but since light can get through it as we (as well as others in the comic universe) can see through the shield then shadows should by the same logic be able to get through the shield as well. Yes the shield wasn’t up before he got to her, I see that now that I’m more awake, but my theory that this is where the argument at the beginning of the comic originates is still solid, at least till I am proven wrong.
Assuming of course his powers are shadow based, rather than looking like shadows, and that his intangibility is altering himself into a shadow, rather than a form of phasing, of course.
That being said, finding out one will likely reveal the other, and we have little in the way of hard data, so it’s up in the air.
What is not up in the air is that baaaaaaaad things will happen to this guy, one way or another.
I, too, am looking forward to getting the answers to all our speculations on Thursday!
:)
Except when the argument was made about light passing through we shot holes in the reasoning Sidney gave by having a bunch of examples of how to make a shield that would let light through but not as an attack.
The artillery range demonstration then showed that her shield can selectively let EM radiation through.
Does her pip boy say “Warning you are being punched”?
Yes.
so she has a smart ass pip boy? sweet, i want one :P ^^

CONGRATS DAVEB!!! CONGRATS GRRL POWER!!!! CONGRATS FELLOW FANS!!!
…….. ——– GRRL POWER WINNER OF COMICMIX TOURNAMENT !!! ——–
“This last round was a biggie, with 656 votes for Paranatural and 612 votes for Grrl Power. But this round was also the biggest cash round, with $164 in paid votes coming in– even more impressive with votes costing 50¢ each for the final round.
But in the end, with $49 for Paranatural and $115 for Grrl Power, the final tally is 842-754 — GRRL POWER WINS”!
Three Cheers for Dave and Grrl Power!
Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray! :D
Woot! Woot! Woot!
Woo! Congrats, Dave- Job well done!
Wait what?
I though Paranatural won???
So it was outmoney’d?
Yup. Just like it “outmoney’d” “Spindrift” in Round 3. Rules of the game.
So THATS why the Supreme Court just overturned the limits on campaign contributions. They are all Grrlpower fans and they knew Dave needed the extra boost to send him over the top. (Hey, it makes as much sense as most other explanations of what goes on in D.C.)
It was within 50 votes when the polls closed.
But apparently Dave’s fans (myself included) found some spare change under the couch cushions and managed to bump Grrl Power trumped Paranatural by almost 100 bought votes.
Congrats all around. Hopefully this will increase traffic for the webcomic and force Dave to go to a M-W-F schedule. ;-)
Well done then, and all other that contributed :)
Congratulations Dave!!!
Very well deserved.
Whoot! A well-deserved win Dave, a reflection of how good the comic is. Great going.
Thank you to everyone who voted and those who put their hands in their pockets, to give us an edge.
Sweet!
I guess for some silly reason (as it should be trivial to code) they don’t show the votes with the paid votes tallied in.
The guys running the contest did show what the pre- and post-donation amounts were.
They stated that before donations it was 656 – 612, with Paranatural in the lead.
And after the donations (of $49 for Paranatural and $115 for Grrl Power), it was 842 – 754, for a Grrl Power victory.
Anyone else want to see DaveB Youtube his victory dance?
+1

The Heartbleedz Hit List: The Passwords You Need to Change Right Now
https://mashable.com/2014/04/09/heartbleed-bug-websites-affected/?utm_cid=mash-com-fb-tech-link
If only we had a world where people were honest in the first place and we wouldn’t have to deal with garbage like this.
I think it is vital, for the survival of the human race, that we do have such elements within it!
Island species, with no predators, gradually devolve into defenceless food. We have eliminated all rivals on this planet. If we did not continually probe our societies defences, they would become weak. As would, over time, our species.
Until we bump into another rival species. Then we will be weak defenceless food. Our only protection would be to hope that they were not hungry!
And happen it will, sooner or later. This universe * is too big and has been around for too long for us to be alone in it. Our islands just happen to be remote. But just as we seek to travel to other islands, others will be attempting to come to ours. Eventually we will meet. And, the meeting might be that much sooner, if the species is one of our own creation. Now that we have the capability to tinker with life and to create artificial ** life.
So it is vital that we do not overdo our efforts to stop the anti-social elements. We must counter their attempts to de-stabilise society and/or drive humanity into extinction. But we should never get tempted to totally cure it and eradicate all elements of anti-social behaviour. Just as a body needs to have exposure to diseases, in order to build up a healthy immune system, so we must keep evil within our society.
Just try to put less of them in positions of power please.
* And we now know that there is more out there than just the one big bang that we happen to be within, and the indications are that ‘out there’ is intruding into here. So the island playgrounds are even more extensive and a lot older than we could prove before (although the insightful suspected it all along).
** Although the ‘artificial’ becomes arbitrary if it is self-replicating and sapient, it would simply not share our biology, if made out of silicone and metal, for example.
Thinking… One possible play is:
Sydney punches the guy. He phases, her hand passes into his chest. He grins. She grins. And holds her hand in his chest…
Will he phase in before she pulls her hand out?
Will he need to phase in to breathe?
Will he have trouble?
Variant on that possibility – she punches into his chest while holding one of her orbs, then lets go.
Fun as that seems… Has she tested yet to see if the orbs are only useable by her? Not sure I see her leaving orbs inside others until ownership lock type tests take place.
No indication (as yet) that anyone else who grabs an orb can make it work for them.
Actually, I was thinking of the exceptionally nasty, probably gross and very likely fatal implications of having one of them suddenly appearing inside someone’s chest cavity.
Doesn’t matter: seriously doubt he will do much controlling with it inside his chest!
Especially since we know that Sydney experimented with trying to control the orbs using all kinds of contact other then being hand held. Including clenched betwixt her butt cheeks… If she couldn’t control an orb held there, I’m confident that Orb Where my Heart Used to be Man isn’t going to be able to control it in his last 10 seconds of life.
I think we did. Max tried to pull tubey and ended up on her ass.
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/370
Nice! I like that idea, very clever.
didnt sabertooth do that in xmen?
Something like that, in Wolverine: Origins
The simplest defense against a phaser (not that kind) for Sydney is to just put her orbs on high speed sweeps around her within the shield. In order for him not to get hit, he would have to stay phased, and in that state would not be able to attack Syd.
If it gets to the point where he sees Syd as a threat to him, his best plan of attack is:
drop back through the floor
come up under her
grab her ankles
pull her half way down through the floor
let go.
Indications are that ‘Shadowboxer’ is not a phaser, but a shadow walker — someone who travels through portals opened to a ‘shadow realm’.
That would put him in a similar category to the Marvel villain ‘the Spot’ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spot_(comics) that created mini wormholes between two locations. I always thought the most effective evil use of this ability by a villain would be to create a one inch hole in space linking him to a spot directly behind his opponent’s head and then shoot a round from a gun into that hole.
Better to create it up against the target’s temple. You know, so the bullet will be moving perpendicular to your position relative to the target. That way you don’t accidentally shoot yourself in the face if his skull isn’t adequate to stop the bullet.
‘Behind’ as in ‘as far from the eyes as possible’, not ‘behind’ as in ‘as far from you/shooter as possible’.
WARNING!
You are being punched
If you are reading this message you have failed your danger sense check. One packet of frozen peas put on order, so it can be placed against the bruise.
I’m guessing she just gets mad and just beats him against the inside of the force field without actually using any power
I’m kinda hoping that one of her unknowns is like a copycat thing. I got this image in my head of her copying him and singing “anything you can do, I can do better!”. Before using his body as a punching bag. Maybe even a power theft orb. The ultimate cheat.
That is a potential upgrade to her telepresence. One point in “copy” to let her copy other people rather than just make an image of herself and one point in “solid” to make the copy solid.
Also an obvious link to the rpg villain from her pre-flashback stuff.
What I would probably like to top it all off:
Bad Guy about to off Syd, and just that moment Max comes straight down, very, very angry,
punches right through the shield and the dude, effectively turning him into mush.
He probably wouldn`t even have enough time to notice the shield breaking and think: “Oh, crap.”
Except that we have no evidence that anything Max can do will get through the shield unless Halo drops it.
All I have to say, grats D.B. your fan base is growing out of control with this fight >:3
Now Sydney is awake, she’s wiping off the “stuff” from her mouth or rubbing the forming burse.
Depending how mad she is/gets he could get anything from letting Harem in to kick his manliness in, to skeet balling him light hook or in an angry way teeth. But I will leave it up to DB after all it’s his show and were rooting for him all the way.
Personally I would like to see Math take Shadow Boxer out. That would open up a lot of plot.
DUDE. I was thinking the same thing. I can’t WAIT to see Mathias in action. You he has at least a 6th Dan in baddass one-liners
But Math also assessed Sydney as having 7th Dan black Belt in Cursing…Certainly that would cause more of a “mental stun” than 6th Dan in Badass One-Liners.
Just popped into my mind, what if Shadow Dude ported Harem to a faraway place?
What if he locked her in some kind of pocket hideout/cell?
What if somebody ported a Harem into another time?
For the first two, I see no reason why she could not just teleport straight back out. Unless they had a Halo-level force field containing her.
As regards the last, the same could happen to any character. They would then be stuck in that time, unless they found a way back. Harem would be able to teleport around within that time, but has no time-travel capability herself (other than the second by second advancement that we all have).
Although, if she can teleport instantly (as opposed to at the speed of light), then she does have a limited form of time travel, and could potentially find her way back from some time eras. It would involve things like a space suit and astronomical navigation though, so would be more of theoretical interest, rather than a practical solution.
One problem I rarely see mentioned about time travel is if one began the travel on a planet, it would be very unlikely the planet would still be in the same place at the end of the jump.
That might be why we don’t have hordes of time travelling visitors. They forget to pack their space suits.
Mind you, time and space are related. Wormholes seem to be the most likely candidates, if time travel is possible. In which case your arrival point is the other end of the tunnel. Whenever and wherever that is. And a super power or ultra-tech device which replicated that would, presumably, be able to specify the time and location to arrive at. If that were the case, then any time-traveller would also have teleportation capability as part of their package.
That depends on what the point of reference is: is it the moving point of origin? The sun? The galaxy’s center? The universe’s center? Boggle your mind on that one….
And here I thought Harem had range-limitations, oh well.
As for the pocket-dimension and time-travel-thing, I was thinking more about what actually would happen to her mind (guess it depends on the nature of the pocket-dimension), since she’s supposed to have simultaneous control over them all.
Could that 1+ body maybe cut off?
Could it come to form its own mind from the share of Harem’s mind it had when getting ported, aka its own person?
Or would it simply drop dead/into a catatonic state without Harem’s hive-mind?
Would it simply disappear when leaving the area of control?
Suspected outcomes
-Sydney punches the guy with orbs. He had no way of seeing that one coming or dodge it when he is attacking himself.
-Sydney throws the forcefield around the guy, trapping him. He probably gets out as Sydney gets distracted by something and vows evil machiavelic revenge.
-New power discovered. Guy gets PWNED.
-Or quaintly enough, another super rescues Sydney.
-All of the above, plus a Sydney “instant certificate of insanity, but holy ferret balls her plan worked!!” crowing moment of awesome.
another possibility is that he takes off her foot and i know this may piss people off but it still would be good story telling
This would be a good time for the new power to be some sort of stun blast targetting minds.
Given what some people have said on page two of the comments, this Harem might not be a Harem at all. Doesn’t seem to have the trademark freckles, which all of her bodies do have, but this might just be a side effect of blue filter of the forcefield layer. This still could just be a art goof though.
The clothes are the same as what that Harem was wearing earlier at the restaurant, but a shape-shifter might have seen her and copied discretely, but been have enough away not to get the details right. With known teleport and multiple body powers, another Harem running around on the battlefield wouldn’t look immediately out of place and a shape-shifter could do some serious initial damage before being spotted.
The single point upgrade to the Truesight orb could be an AoE Dispel Illusions, which wouldn’t be something you would normally be able to figure out from earlier testing in the restaurant. I doubt we’d be finding out until the immediate situation is taken care of, but could have an interesting effect on the battle later with the unusual number of bad guys that seem to be outside the restaurant.
If the point upgrade was an AOE dispel illusions, the restaurant staff would have been even MORE disturbed by Dabbler… So yes, it IS a power that’d be figured out by testing at the restaurant ;)
The “Harem is a Bad Guy(tm) using an illusion” theory has one barn door sized hole in it:
Why would such a Bad Guy(tm) be wasting his/her time pounding on Sydney’s force field and yelling outthe good advice for her to drop the field, when said Bad Guy(tm) could simply “watch in horror” as Sydney is killed by Shadow Boxer? Or set up an attack against some other unsuspecting member of ARC, seeing as Shadow Boxer seems to have Sydney well in hand?
It makes no sense, and this is how we know that Harem is indeed Harem.
Pahahah – look at the wristwatch: ‘Warning. You are being punched.’ As if she couldn’t work that one out….
It would be even more awesome if, during the course of the next few moments, her armband displays “Congrats on making Halo mad at you, dude”
It would be interesting to see this concept expanded:
Warning: Some drunken idiot is about to hit on you. Plus, he’s already married and has “x” number of kids.
Halo is down but she is conscious. She doesn’t look injured. We have seen she has no hesitation going after someone who hurts her, even if she is outclassed. Sydney is going to come off the floor screaming curses. She’ll probably ignore Harem, Syd is not used to teamwork yet. She’ll go after Shadow Boxer with the orbs forcing him on the defensive at least. Then we will see Halo perform some demented act of totally unexpected genius using an orb power in a way that will amaze everybody but Boxer the Mighty. He’ll be too busy screaming for the police to save him.
Wow, up to 4 pages of comments already. Guess this was a very anticipated update! (and the comicmix tournament thingie…) So yeah don’t have time to read all of that right this second (though I might on the weekend or something) but I would like to say it is great/funny that Sydney was both hurt and helped by her character in this first fight. She was to easily distracted to put the shield up when directed, which would have saved her completely, and she was to hyper to by caught flatfooted. Awesome to squeeze so much of a unique character into a few panels! :)
Someone hurt Sydney.
Must
Forecast
His
Doom…
Doesnt look good she lost her glasses ..maybe she wont kno w what orb she would choose. If i had to guess she is going to fly up at such a speed that shadow boxer gets pinned to they force field and then she will turn off the force causing him to drop. Btw shadow boxer is cool… Shadow control and shadow stepping… Very neat
Doh, I hate typing on my smartphone…. What I meant to say is that if sydney flew up at several hundred miles per hour the shadow boxer would be snapped to the bottom of the force shield held there by force… at which point she could drop the shield and he would… well drop. but I think we should all remember is that Sydney is not a super in body…. and so likely could be stunned or too hurt to do any thing. I am just so glad that DaveB can draw action so well… being able to draw both action and nice pictures are not the same thing… So great job.
Actually, one point of speculation is whether the flyball is for flying, or for gravity manipulation, given how her hair defys gravity while using theball. If the latter, he might not feel g forces. And in any event, flying up at speed only gets Halo a few seconds reprieve. Flying in circles however… Or just flying up then back down, then dropping the shield and flying off…
But alas, they want survivors.
There is no reason to the gravity-ball affecting anything else than her. It did not affect the sand inside her field for example: https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/1088
I just thought of something. If it wasn’t for that stupid arm band Sydney could have gotten that cybernetic arm she was wanting. Oh well, better luck next time.
Well that would leave her only one hand to use her orbs.
I just now saw the pattern on Sydney’s shield.
I recognized it.
It’s Abstergo’s logo.
She’s got there 6 Apples of Eden (and one Orange of Eden).
I would think that Sydney’s best attack might be the shield. Not all of shadow guys powers have been explained, but if he can shadow any part of his body at any time, almost any attack would be useless, maybe even the lighthook orb. While it was just established that the shield can block different forms of travel, it might stop shadow guy.
If its shadow powered, and the light hook gives light…. He might be short any shadows shortly…
Wow, shadow boxer looks really tiny. Short man syndrome made him evil?
I don’t think he’s tiny, I just think the perspective is off in the 7th panel. It looks like he’s tiny, and standing over Halo’s leg, but I think he’s supposed to be farther away.
When he attacked her his head was only slightly higher then hers so for a super he is short.
OR, the rest of his legs were still in the floor so he wasn’t up to his full standing-on-the-ground height yet?
One major point against Blondini being an illusion/impostor: how would a villain know what her real name is? And seriously doubt Deus is behind the attack
Her name has nationwide broadcasted: https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/1015
Oh right, forgot that (still say that is the real Blondini though)
I agree that she’s probably not an illusory disguise.
but if she was… I’m absolutely positive it’s the ginger waiter looking for another soul to steal and consume ^.^
No, he did not even snicker when she took him to one side and ordered vegetarian food. Illusionary disguise or not, no villain could have that degree of self-control!
“I’m not traped in here with you; You’re trapped in here with me!” -Rorschach
Also in b4 foreshadowing comes to pass, and she makes both of them very famous.
“Warning: You are being punched”
Thanks for the heads up… stupid machine.
First resize shield so that dickhead is outside (shouldn’t have made it so big to start with). Second… well, I’d be tempted to grab the PPO and let him have it on general principle. But that could go sideways, so I would guess that Lighthook is the most likely choice. See if you can grab him, and then give him a really good squeeze,
I bet he is soon going to see that force field as his PRISON. Poor misguided bastard…
I can see him pounding the sides, whimpering: “Please drop your forcefield. I can’t teleport through it!”
Sydney you have to wear that big ol thing because it can sever or somehow disable your hand if you become a threat.
Sydney’s head is quite remarkably weird in panel three. It reminds me of those great wild takes you used to see in the Warner Bros. cartoons, though modified through a manga filter here.
I’m hoping for a return of the ZIDANE!
What ever her wrist device is made out of/from, it is highly durable: check out panel 4, the slash hit the part that has the display (if you don’t believe me, look at her hand)
Even with the adorkable type punch, that looks like it hurt!
Is that just shadow sticking to his foot, or does ShadowMan have goat feet?
Probably supposed to be ninja footies. Ya know, the ones with the big toe in its own little mini shoe segment for grip or something…
Ninja?!? This guy is a ninja? Once Sydney realizes what she’s dealing with, he is soooo screwed!
They look like straight-up boots to me.
The funny thing is Max and Achilles might need the ” you are being punched” warning. They might not notice, depending on the attacker.
In the last panel there are 6 orbs showing. The forcefield orb is in Halo’s hand. The lighthook, flyorb, truesight orb, and the 2 unknown orbs are above her head. By process of elimination, the PPO orb is the missing one. No idea if that is relevant. It might just be the orb Halo sent to menace shadowman to buy some time. Then again it could just be hooking around towards her hand. It could be a minor oversight on the artist’s part, given it’s similarity to one of the unknown orbs. I look forward to the next page.
Just realized this: Harem hitting the forcefield makes a “pung pung” sound. I’m not well enough acquainted with physics to know what the implications of that is, but at the very least, there’s some form of energy transference from outside the forcefield to within.
She can also hear sound transmitted through the shield, yet the shock wave from a point blank daisy-cutter doesn’t turn the occupants’ organs to jelly. I think the proper words here are –
” What!? That’s horseshit! That totally would have gone through that! “
Nah. The proper words are: “intensity-sensitive energy filtering”.
It seems that Halo’s shield is only blocking vibrations it deems to be too dangerous to pass. Thus it allows speech through yet dampens an earth-shattering kaboom.
This also suggests that her translucent shield may well be able to become opaque when it needs to be; either by default or as one of its upgrades. Somewhat like photochromic lenses that darken depending in intensity of their UV light exposure.
Something tells me that guy will not live long to regret what is going to befall him.
You are quite wrong, he will be regreting it for a very looooong time to come.
Also he will get a name change.
Either Meat puppet or Meat popcicle will be his new moniker.
I vote brokenwreck new powers whimpering and wetting himself
Ether way this guy suffers greatly.
So yeah, I’m just going to come out and say what we’re all thinking here . . .
Can she use her shield as a giant hamster ball ?
Alternatively she could just use the flight orb combined with the shield orb to go around crashing into the bad guys at high speed. Being hit with an apparently indestructible force at 400mph might sting a bit
She could. It would probably even be more effective, but it’s nowhere near as hilarious.

^Damn, where’s the delete double post button?
It seems to me the shadow boxer isn’t a particularly smart fighter, seeing as his first attack came from above. Which means he took the time to rise a way out of the ground before launching his first attack. Instead of stabbing her from below.
Or it could mean he doesn’t have fine control on his phasing and needed to be completely out of the floor before he could attack.
I read it as an upward slash that mostly missed because she stepped and bent back out of the way
Try standing on water and punching someone or swinging a sword at them. You will find that your lack of firm footing makes your blow rather wild and, even if it hits, weak. In order to get a good swing at her, he needed to give himself tangible feet, so that he would be able to stand on solid ground. We have no indication that he is able to fly, so he could not claim that he could ‘hover’ partly underground, using his power to support him.
Judging from his actions I would say that his power to move vertically through the ground stems from his ability to become intangible, in some way. So turning off the power, in order to attack as sircrash says, would necessitate him coming fully out of the ground.
Even if he can turn partially solid, would you fancy exposing the insides of your torso to whatever dirt and ickyness there is in the ground under a building? Let alone if somebody trod on your head whilst doing so, and your spinal column, heart & lungs got compacted directly onto whatever sharp bits you happened to be overlapping with.
Even worse if he made the intangible/tangible point higher up, above the ground. Then there would be less tangible mass to resist a stomping attack, so the push down would be that much more effective. Plus there would be time to build up momentum, before hitting the ground. Thereby smashing the back of the hand at the point where it joins the wrist (let us say) into the ground. But with no skin or other soft tissue to protect it. So all the damage would fall on exposed veins, nerves, cartilage and other bits that prefer to be kept inside the body.
