Grrl Power #205 – Hyperactivity bonus vs. backstab
Apparently there was enough room between the wall and the table for a shield that large. Good thing it either automatically resets to a smaller default size or Sydney thought to reset it herself after the demonstration, where if you remember the shield was large enough to totally destroy that room if it went up in there. Her shield does form centered on her, large enough to encompass her, but will adjust itself up or down a bit not to slice off anything near her, which is why Shadow Boxer there didn’t get a haircut when her shield went up. That may be a yet undiscovered option though. Something else to note is that the orbs don’t automatically activate when Sydney grabs them, she can hold them without them turning on, but in this case it was a defensive reflex.
It was kind of tough drawing Sydney taking a real punch. Her adorkableness affects even me. Sure she’s suffered a few hits already during the course of the comic, but most of them were self inflicted except the bonk on the head at the bank, and we all know how well that went for her assailant.
I’ve groused a little about the nature of the webcomic format a little before, in that the delay between pages allows people to consider each page with far more scrutiny than they would if you’re just flipping through a finished book. As such, the resolution to Sydney’s current conundrum may not surprise much of anyone, but what can you do? Of course it works both ways, and the little gags I hide in there whenever I can are more likely to be ferreted out.
<– Supporting Grrl Power through Patreon earns you karma. Not Reddit karma, real karma, which of course is not real.
Sydney forgot the cardinal rule of attack.
Always. Expect. Ninjas.
Why else would she have looked over her shoulder? She expected a ninja.
+1
Expected and countered. Twice.
I know the author has already written ahead for future reference, but there needs to be a greater sense of danger for his protagonists. You don’t need to kill off heroes, but it becomes boring if they get to walk away from dangerous encounters unscathed. If another hero or non-powered ally gets hurt enough to be temporarily decommissioned that would make me happy. That or introduce a villain who can circumvent many powers and kills Achilles with casual ease.
Halo just got punched and is cut off from help.
Oh, and if that isn’t good enough, the guy now has a shadow sickle in his hand. I think that he met his quota for dangerous villain today.
Plus, this is their first ever combat. The first fight is always easy… it’s the third that you have to look out for, that one’s a kicker.
Well… official combat as Arc, anyway.
1.) The mugging dismissed as self defense
2.) The bank struggle
3.) Here and now.
-Apparently this is the fight to worry about.
Poor Sydney! I would leap to her defence, but there is a force-field blocking the fourth wall!
I know the feeling. I want to jump in there myself (with random super power) and save her myself just for the tiny “thank you”.
Oh…. oh yeah, I’d forgotten about those…
*puts a concerned face on*
Nawwwww…
1) Sydney vs. normal, no contest;
2) Fake fight, even the guys posing as “bad guys” weren’t going to hurt anyone;
3) First real challenge.
Well, if there’s a kicker, let’s hope it’s Sydney (and Shadow boxer is the “kick-ee”).
Remember: the only ones guaranteed safety is Maxi, Anvil & Sydney
They are guaranteed to survive only.
We don’t know what kinds of healers arc has.
Yes, that is the single biggest disadvantage of flash-backs. I hope that we can get back to a present-day timeline soon, so that there is no guaranteed survival for anyone. Keep us all on our toes.
Mind you Anvil’s “here comes the big guns” may have been Avil’s “welcome back”, to Halo, after her many month stay in intensive care.
A sense of danger shouldn’t come from consequences. That’s the last resort of the writer. Killing off a character just to induce the Worf effect would be plain bad writing. A sense of danger comes from protagonists being unprepared. And the reason why it’s important from a storytelling perspective is that it gives a reason for characters to stretch themselves.
It’s true that so far none of the characters have had to stretch at all, but I have faith it’ll happen.
Here here! Dave has already stated he has no plans to go down the route of killing one of Harem just to see what happens. There’s dark and there’s being a dick, some writers do the latter way too much. And then you get all the rubbish excuses for bringing a character back, alternate reality, alternate timeline, retcons, all the things where the writer might as well have just written “I’m sorry we killed them off can we still be friends?”. Ahem, tangent over.
If you want a parody of that, check the comic ‘Top Ten’. The second book includes a funeral with the speech “until… she may be cloned, reincarnated, or otherwise revived.”
Everyone seems to be expecting that Sydney kicks butt here – I’d be happy to see that too but I hate to say it, she is only human and has just been smacked in the head. It might make for less satisfying narrative (in the short term) but it’s quote possible she passes out, in doing so released the force field orb, and harem or whoever swoops in and saves her bacon.
If anything, it’s a better “formative superhero moment” to realise that you’re not invincible and actually, this whole dealie is a serious business.
She’s already done well in surviving the first attack by a frickin’ shadow ninja. No-one would realistically be expecting more from her. And her feeling she’d let the side down would be an interesting subplot for the next little while.
Anyway, that’s my twopenn’orth :) and I wouldn’t be upset to be proved wrong, pretty much anything that could happen now will no doubt be exciting stuff.
Also, the pipboy message made me laugh out loud.
Agreed.
The police report said “Oh, the humanity.” and nothing else we know about. The image that is conjured in Maxima’s mind is just that. It may or may not reflect what actually happened.
We have seen her kick stretchy man (forget his name) in the leg, applying ‘butterfly fart’ punches, the ‘Equalizer kick’, and the tongue front flip. After that, there is the elbow pile drive.
Then the head munching… that she actually did…
You know what? I give up. I was rereading the the fight scene as I looked for the blows she landed, and that is just scary.
In the case of the bank robbery, I’m guessing that the “robbers” (how were good guys) weren’t allowed to use powers, that combined with a surprise attack left Sydney in good shape. This guy is definatly not a good guy pretending to be bad and is not going to hold back on using powers
Yes, another option is she refuses to drop the force field (on the basis that it would allow him to escape) so she takes a drubbing trying to knock him out. That would make for some hard-earned superhero rep. Unless she loses consciousness now, I think she’ll be taking a few more hits. At least when he’s swinging his shadow thingies they’re solid enough to deflect – you may have better luck grabbing them with the hentorb than striking at his body. And then slamming him into the force field. Just a few hints for you there, Syd!
He is standing over her legs. That is not a good place to be.
I would approve of that. On the other paw, she is the central character in a super-hero story. So it would not be out of place for her to behave above and beyond the call of duty. Untrained civilian she may be, but she has balls!
I give you 4 groans (out of 5) for that one.
Yes, she keeps them in a special jar in her apartment, right next to her bound copy of The List.
Expect her to be collecting some additions for that jar very soon.
In Real life, any head blow that kos you, even for a few seconds risks brain damage.
In real life, any head blow that kos you for longer than seconds, is usually fatal.
Perhaps this is where we learn she can change the shape of the shield as well as size.
can the shield change size while on?
(like the invisible woman’s ?)
because shadow bow would look hilarious as a 10 cm sphere…
“um, where are his hands?”
“up his ass”
…
“trust me, everything is up his ass right now”
I would guess so. But Sydney is inside the shield too. She probably does not fancy being squished along with him.
assuming she’s not immune to it and able to pass through it herself.
Warning. The Nerd has been engaged. Reality compromised. Seek immediate cover.
I’m more concerned about the villains comment… “You’re about to make us both very famous…” When has that ever turned out well for the speaker?
I admit, Sydney style verbal combat or reflexive pummeling may be in order. Fly thru ceiling, drop shield, let gravity do rest? lightwhip restraints? She has options, and a history of chewing on her opponents. Should be some fun in store.
Flash forwards a few years, to a school classroom.
Teacher: And this video demonstrates how the word came into the English language. Up until this point, it had not been thought possible to commit such an act, even hypothetically.
You will notice that the most graphic parts have been pixilated. This is so that you will not have nightmares. But, as you can see, from the horrified reactions of everyone in the room, that you really should not wish to become famous. Not when trapped in a confined space with an enraged super-heroine.
Where’s the “Like” button on this post?
What he said.
Unfortunately, this format for the comic doesn’t support a “like” button…It’s become more common to add a reply that says “+1” under the comment you’re “voting” in favor of. Seek out Yorp’s comments for examples.
+1
…And Dr. Revenge, like Yorp, has been known to do the same…
“Bows politely”
You did it again, I laughed so hard I had tears coming…
It’s worked out pretty well for the Undertaker in the past. Of course that’s staged and stuff, but when it can come true, it sounds pretty badass. Unfortunately for him, shadow boy here, while looking badass himself with cool powers ain’t a top level wrestler on a television show.
i predict the stream will commence with something along the lines of “Suckerpunching sonovabastch”, and rapidly spiral into the realm of “free form word association from the unknown” in short order, as she goes all nerd rage and spazes on him in a manner no other combatant he has ever faced in the past ever has.
IF he survives, he will be so traumatized by this encounter, he will only be able to hug his knees and slowly rock while jumping at every little noise
but that’s jsut my predicition, i’m probably wrong
Naah, he’ll just be afraid of round objects for the rest of his life.
Sydney’s cursing reaching the levelof cthonian horror? Wouldn’t surprise me. Might even convince her to tone it down… Nah!
I think using fighting tehniques he never faced before is a given for Sydney.
Like Deadpool, her fighting style consists of videogames, freestyle and macarena.
And flailing a lot.
well… you know what they say about the world’s #1 swordsman… he doesn’t fear the second greatest… he fears the WORST swordsman… because he can predict what the #2 will do, and can counter it, but he CAN’T predict what the worst one will do, so he CAN’T prepare a counter move for it…
i foresee that coming into play here as well, Shadow Boxer seems to be a well trained, very fit, martial arts fighter and undoubtedly prepared for a *standard* martial artists fighting techniques… but he will be unprepared for moves such as the Tongue-flip, and the ever-popular Scalp-Gnaw, Ear-Pummel combo… thus.. he WILL lose this fight, probably not without getting a few hits in himself, but yes, he will assuredly lose. and NOT just because of the flashback effect, but because she CAN handle herself in combat… go back thru the archives, the scene where her mugging comes up… NOTHING was said about WHEN it occurred… we might be ASSUMING that it happened AFTER she found the orbs and she used them to protect herself, but i’ll bet that it probably wasn’t… all because she was ARRESTED… and since when do the police let people they arrest KEEP anything on their person while they are in the slammer?… don’t you think those TETHERED orbs would be, um… *unusual*, and therefore DOCUMENTED in the police report?!?… since there was nothing about them in the report… ergo, she was mugged BEFORE she got the orbs, and CAN take care of herself in a fight… now that she DOES have them… heh, heh, heh… this fight’s gonna be GOOOODDD!!!
“It’s…” Don’t do it “it’s…” Don’t… ” ::deep breath:: SHOWTIMEEEEE!” and this is why we can’t have nice things…that and Sydney’s terrible reaction time. “Well that’s what happens when you don’t summon the mech” ONE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OTHER!
She had great reaction time: she got her arm up in time to deflect both the initial attack and the follow up (what, you think the PewPewOrb just happened to move down enough to deflect the knuckleduster blow?)
… Which is in keeping with the amazing reaction speed she showed verses Harem’s T-Port a while back.
That showtime! reminds me of Rhythm thief, i wish someone would fight like that.
Maybe Math?
Heh, Sydney’s arm thing is warning her that she’s being punched.
Will an unknown orb make itself known?
Quite possibly, quite possibly indeed
“Hello, I am the Mystery Orb, commonly known as ‘The Brown Orb’. Please accept my card, and allow me to demonstrate my powers.”
Small-print on the card: Demonstration of powers involves eating anybody who attacks mommy.
Nah man. The brown orb just plays the brown note.
Could be worse. Disc-world’s Death plays the silent/last note in ‘Soul Music’. It starts the end of the world.
The thing that started the end of the world was the beginning of the world, technically.
You mean it actually worked? That nonsense, er “sneaking up on her brain,” really reset her to grabbing the shield orb first? Then again, this is Sydney we’re talking about.
This bad guy has some interesting abilities, sort of like the shadow mage from a long dead webcomic. Also, I could potentially see a form fitting force field as one of the Powerups to Sydney’s skill tree.
Just as placebos actually do good even when you know they’re placebos, yes. It’s amazing the things you can do when you convince yourself you can. The mind is a powerful tool.
And Sydney’s may be above par.

I wonder if phasing would work on Syd’s shield. If so than bringing up shield may not be the best choice since the Shadow boxer proved that he can phase.
If teleporting can’t get through it, I doubt phased or intangible beings can either. But, you are right not to jump to conclusions. They are different powers, after all. Halo would be sensible to hope for the best, but plan for the worst.
The bad ending: Shadow-Dude almost finishes Syd off but leves for some reason.
Syd still holds her shield-orb therefore nobody can get to her to help her…
The PPO just saved her from a broken jaw. Once she gathers her wits that guy is in for a world of hurt.
I wonder if she could encapsule someone with her shield bubble and then compress it to crush them. Its one of the lesser used uses for a forcefield. Most authors think of them purely defensively, but there are so many nasty things you can do with them depending on the level of control the wielder has over his or her shield. Another example of offensive shield use would be to project a small shield bubble inside someone and then expand it to make them pretty much explode. Project it over their heads to cut off air supply. So many things go overlooked.
The Fantastic Four’s Susan Storm Richards has played around with plenty of variations like that over the years. She actually did all three of those things that you mentioned in one episode of the cartoon series. She knocked out the Thing by forming an air-tight bubble over his head, then later trapped him inside a shrinking force field that had him scrunched up into the tightest space he could occupy and survive, and in that same scene she formed a force field bubble inside the body of Mr. Fantastic which threatened to burst his chest wide open if he hadn’t snapped her out of Psychoman’s control. I’ve also seen her create a form-fitting force field around her body and flex it like the Thing’s muscles to snap the bonds restraining her. Force fields can be amazingly versatile and powerful.
Yes, freely controllable force fields, ala Sue Storm, are a powerful and versatile weapon. However, as DaveB said in his comments below the page, Sydney’s shield always appears centered on her. Making it a pretty much purely defensive tool. She has show no signs of the ability to project it away from her location, nor has DaveB given any hints that I have seen of her ability to do so. Although it is interesting to learn that it is impervious to, at least, Halo’s teleportation ability.
One assumes you mean Harem’s teleportation ability. Though…since we don’t know yet what two of the orbs do…
One assumes correctly, so this time it only makes an ass of me :)
Just remember: this is still the First Day, and mere hours (if that) since she learnt she can upgrade the Orbs
I’m not sure if he’s standing over her legs or not. There are some open questions to the character’s dimensions and power sets:
1. He can Phase up through the floor which implies flight of some kind (I’ve never understood why characters that can phase through solid objects don’t immediately plummet to the center of the earth).
2. While throwing the punch he’s slightly taller then Sydney. Sydney being 5 ft makes the guy short for a normal guy and extremely short for someone with powers.
3. Looking at the dimensions of the shield, someone 5 ft could be comfortably standing 11 feet away and still be inside the shield’s radius. Harem is 5’8″ or 68″ and assuming the shield is about 30 degrees off vertical where her head is and that the shield is perpendicular when it touches the ground that puts the radius at 136″. (Imagine Harem standing straight up inside the shield with her head touching it. The distance from her head to the center is the radius. The angle between Harem and the shield is 30 degrees and the angle between Harem and the radius is 60 degrees. SOHCAHTOA with Harem being adjacent and the radius being the hypotenuses gives the radius at 136″ or slightly over 11 feet. To find out how far someone can stand without ducking you can use A sqrd + B sqrd = C sqrd with A = the person’s height and C = the radius of the sphere). So if those dimensions are correct it’s really a surprise that nothing else is inside the shield with them.
4. Let’s flip it around and assume that the shield would make itself as small as possible: Sydney’s height plus a little extra. This would center the shield on her waist but it could limit the shield’s radius to around 3 feet. This means that anyone withing 3 feet of Sydney’s when she activated the shield would cause it to expand to include them. Now lets assume that someone 5′ is standing 2′ away and the shield’s center is 2’6″ off the floor. The shield would need a radius of 3’3″. If the shield was instead centered at the floor it would need a radius of 5’4″ for the same person.
More then likely the should be put down as “artistic license” as drawing a sphere of the correct dimensions wouldn’t convey the same information when Harem’s knocking to be let in (the shield curve would look wrong). And more then likely a shield centered around Sydney as tight as possible would give her a distinct hamster ball effect. So more then likely there will magically be enough open space for the shield to operate without slicing anything and no one will be standing too close to each other to cause a cascade the pulls in the entire block as the shield gets bigger and bigger trying not to slice anyone.
Not every Super is going to be a perfect 6 feet adonis, just because he has powers doesn’t mean squat if he is Asian
He could have been punching when still partially inside the phase shift.
Nerd alert! Nerd alert!
Dude! It’s a comic! You are thinking WAYYY to hard!
But since you’re doing all this high powered math about Syd’s shield, how much does the chunk of floor the bottom half of it cut loose weigh? :P
It doesn’t cut floors otherwise there would have been issues with the conference room
And yet it picked up a dump truck full of sand at the testing grounds, or did I misremember that? Gotta re-read and check now I guess. :(
Yeah, but gives ains if sand have air between them allowing a closest approximation of a sphere between them unlike a solid floor. This raises a question if a shield forming encapsulates liquids?
If I remember correctly, Sidney was already up in the air and she raised her shield to protect herself while sand was already flying around her. When she raised her shield, the sand around her was incapsulated and came to rest at the bottom of the sphere
Suddenly really glad that their logos are on their collars, so I can tell when I’m looking at Harem. :) So glad that the story is going somewhere now!! How exciting!!!
I know this is already written out as well. My take on it though is she grabs the “molestorb” and makes it live up to its name. . . Just the look on his face would be awesome!
…Maybe he’s going to learn the difference between carpal tunnel Syndrome & Anal Tunnel Syndrome, the hard way?…
If I turned out to be who you think I might be, I might be flattered…But I have no idea who you think I might be. Maybe I’m only similar to who you think I might be, so all I could say is that great minds tend to think alike.
;)
I was talking to Jonathon Creech XD If he’s the same Jon Creech I knew in college.
If you are who I think you might be, I’ve been trying to get a hold of you for years….XD
Have these men never head of shirts? Or fashion in general?
First fight! I love the ‘warning you are being pummeled’ on the wrist thing.
Warning, you are being punched! Thanks computer, that was so totally helpful.
That was the old version. If you look at the past comics for the future Sydney in the pre-flashback scene of the future timeline comics published prior to the current comics of previous events… (Ow. I think I hurt my brain.) Well anyway, she is wearing a different armband in comic #3. https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/57
That thing saved her arm! No way you would ever get me to replace it with one with straps.
it might expand to a full armored version
Or it might be her cell phone or something. As of yet, we don’t really know anything about Sidney’s preferances for gadgets and such.
I just realized: she says her “real power is dice karma”… maybe from on of the unknown orbs?
It probable is setup for Anvil, who wants to know when she is hit.
I wonder if we’re going to find out that the orb system has a sentience now and will actively protect Sydney in times of duress.
Or maybe she’ll pass out and we’ll cut to the scene after the fight where she wakes up and is recounted with the details of the fight.
Unknown Orb 1: boss-scanner, always checks on status of owner and surroundings.
Unknown Orb 2: automated self-defense controller, WILL make sure that owner is protected.
If above would be correct, I forsee Syd being unconscious and her orbs going apeshit on Shadow-Dude by themselves. Poor guy, he even had enough smarts to come in ninja-style.
Itvwould have to be a sence-motive type effect, since it didn’t trigger on Math.
Well back then Syd was neither in real danger, nor knocked out.
Like what happened in the original book version of The Hobbit?
He hurt the Sidney. Now he must pay. >:(
I’m ridiculously attached to this character, lol. Now I want Shadow-b***h to have the orbs rapid fired up his @$$ so fast that they leave burn marks on his tongue.
THEORY
are we about to learn what one of the mystery-balls does?
So who’s betting on a Watchman reference in the next page?
I wonder if Sydney can make more than 1 force field at a time, and if they have to be centred on herself. If she could… she could squish Shadow Boxer between 1 contracting and 1 expanding field, or use the fields as prisons.
Am I the only one who htinks Sydney is not going to immediately kick ass like at the bank? At the time she was caught by surprise and Amorphous wasn’t actually trying to hurt her. This time she knows they’re under attack (so some rational fear should be in there), she’s had that contemplative moment earlier (so she’s beginning to take things seriously) and now she’s received a proper hit. Chances are she’s going to be out of her depth. That guy looks competent and he’s actually trying. She seems to have superior fire power so she’ll still get through, but this finght will not be won by a hyperactive attack. I see a chance for some real character development here.
My guess is that she’s going to go WAY too far. Shadow Ninja is dead and Syd is going to have to come to terms with killing someone. She’ll probably keep the shield up and the back blast is going to hurt her as well taking her out after her first retaliation strike.
If that’s the case, all she really needs to do is lash out with “Lighthook”…
…& puncture his ribcage.
I don’t think anyone is giving her enough credit. I think she grabbed the shield orb so she doesn’t hurt anyone when she PPO’s the idiot. She remembers and takes to heart what maxima tells her. So she made sure she’s not shooting at puppies if she misses, the bad thing will be if she kills him. Then I think her reality will come crashing down on her for a while.
Firing the PPO inside of your own impervious shield sounds like a REALLY bad idea. Just sayin’.
Ooo, A shadow villain with some skills. I already love him!
And already showing the downside to Sidney’s powers in battle.
Also I’d like to reference Sidney’s argument in the rool playing game they had. If a force field is able to let in light then it is also able to let in shadow as well so this shadow powered villain should be able to port out if he does get in a pinch even with the force field up.
Except in a gaming world that sort of shadow travel fits in the same ‘school’ as teleport (planar/phase-shifting) often as not. As stated in today’s comic, teleport is blocked.
Only if he has his wits enough intact to do it.
Sydney can throw him about by the tongue or worse.
Im afraide she’s too buisy picking up her own teeth and getting knocked the F^(k out to do any of that.
He doesn’t understand. She’s not trapped in there with him…
Well, to be fair, he is the one with a shadow-scythe. Of course he thinks things are going his way.
Sidney just needs to grab her flight orb and all is golden. If he cannot penetrate the force field, she can pinball him around it mercilessly. If he can, she just needs to fly out of reach.
There’s the potential for some great slapstick, here. I can imagine her hamster-balling over a large number of the villains with Shadowboxer’s face smooshed up in horror against the inside of the force field.
Of possible responses, I’m thinking: lightship, restrain and entertain the guest.
Grr. Autocorrect is evil. Lightship -> lightwhip
Lighthook.
If Sydney uses the Lighthook to restrain, then Sydney would be the only one actually entertained by it.
Does she fly away with the shield up and him caught, or attack ?
Weapons: PPO, molest orb, orbs as weapons, herself.
I doubt she will drop the shield although she might push a button on it.
Very curious how this’ll play out. On one hand, I’d love to see Math come to Sydney’s rescue and horribly thrash this guy for hitting the spunky girl he’s taken a liking to. On the other hand, I’d also like to Sydney show what she’s capable of. And not just powers. I’ve dealt with ADHD all my life, and one thing I’ve noticed, and discussed with others with it, is that in situations of real danger, when the adrenaline hits, your focus is incredible. Sydney is in true danger here, but she’s a gamer, and probably has multiple scenarios for situations like this. Maybe she’ll quote Rorschach with his “I’m not trapped in here with you, you’re trapped in here with me!”, as she breaks out the Hentacle and hits him with the WWCF (wall, wall, celing, floor) attack. Lots of ways this’ll go. Can’t wait till Thursday.
What I think should happen is, use fly orb to stand, switch to molestorb, uses to pck up and put on glasses.
Grabs bad guy with tentecle.
Then says in a very CALM voice,
YOU
WILL
KNOW
PAIN
This is where Syd discovers the brown orb is Shitstain Punch Orb. One punch and any enemy not invulnerable is reduced to a brown stain on the nearest surface, which in this case is the inside of the shield.
“Warning you are being punched” I hate that pipboy already
Stupid shadow boxer. This shield isn’t here to protect me. It’s here so you couldn’t escape from the inevitable tentacle rape with the Lighthook. Mwhahahaha!
I’m sure people are debating whether or not the red orb moved to protect her, or if it was just luck. We may not find out for a while, but this has me wondering…
What if one of the mystery orbs affects luck? Wouldn’t that be neat? An orb that activates luck and changes probability in her favor? Ooh, has anyone else suggested that? Am I the first? If I’m right, do I win a prize?
All of these attempts to predict what Sydney will do….only Dave knows! All that I will try and predict is lots of cussing, lots of strangeness, weird attack combinations and probably a lots of moments that will just be sooooooo Sydney.
I have the suspicion that “Harem” is a shapeshifter from the villain team. But that could just be me overthinking it.
Actually, given that Harem would have heard Maxima’s orders to Sydney not to let the shield down, that is a very intriguing possibility…
Though Max had no idea this would happen to Syd, mind you.
She will also only learn of it on the next page, the soonest.
Love the warning notice on the pip boy.
