Grrl Power #169 – Halo, the gritty hero
I kind of wish I had left Sydney’s eyepatch on, and the bump on her forehead from the head desk on page 122 to have the accumulated “battle damage” even before she gets into a proper fight.
The point of this page, besides showing some immediate fallout from Sydney’s… well, fallout, is that I think I’ve neglected to show Maxima’s animosity with the press enough. Though really mostly her complaint with the press is the bias and fear mongering and shoehorning complex issues down to sound bites, and the press have given them like 2 hours of undivided attention. Of course that doesn’t mean there won’t be all that stuff going on once the endless news cycle and decidedly non-expert analysis starts up. (Though who is an expert at this sort of thing I guess?)
Thanks to everyone who did some shopping via that Amazon referral link, I only get a tiny bit from each sale but it adds up and helps with defraying the cost of emergency hard drives and whatnot.
BTW I know I haven’t updated the vote incentive like I had planned, but I do have an excuse. I’ll just say this; I’m not sure what it says about French Onion Dip that I couldn’t tell it had expired 10 days ago… so, yeah. The following day was… slightly less productive than I had hoped. I’ll try and put up something different soon.
Yeah, she’s alright, she has true grit – up her ____.
Hey now ;)
This is full of heartwarming win. :-) It’s nice to see Max being so gentle. Seeing Sydney being vulnerable (for a change) is quite touching.
Also, this pretty much validates Archon’s existence in training supers to not be dangers to people around them- or themselves.
I see where Max is coming from, but Arianna is right. This show has to go on.
OI! Moulin Rouge flashback…..
yep, and they’re doing some “oi oi” stomp the floor number in my head.
Agreed. Max has the perfect qualities for a commanding officer. Tough with the troops when they need discipline, but caring about them like a parent when needed.
Oh my god. Sydney’s face is so amazingly drawn. Her face is showing all her feelings perfectly! I like to see this less comical side of her and also this kind side of Maxima. Congratulations for your great work!
My thoughts exactly!
Ya DB is really good with that, the one expression is like a thousand words, and all that good stuff.
looks like sidney isn’t the only one that got a level up on that update ^-^
The hat didn’t really suit her anyway…
But now she’s not fully protected against the sunlight.
Well, there is still the dust cloud she lick up. She should last until Max can perfom a salvage op.
*kicked
(buggy damn phone…)
[End of next week’s posting ]
Max: And that takes care of that. Oh, Sydney, here’s your hat back. I found it well-pressed under that piece of tank tread over there.
… And yet again Max’s geek/nerd-ish credentials surface (“So …. level up“).
It’s useful though. Max and Syd are going to get along with each other well enough that way.
Best way to get your point across to Sydney: use comic/game references.
Perfect time to see if one of the orbs is a healing orb, methinks. But somehow, I think all present will forget the grand mal willies that came up before.
And “Level Up” made me smile. I love Max for her no-nonsense attitude as befitting a high-ranking officer, but she is still so caring about her team, especially newcomers who still need training. I’d say once Sydney is trained more thoroughly, Max may be much tougher with her.
And I noticed, Max has the required level of hip to say PPO and not get snarked at by Sydney. And if Sydney thinks she is cool, whoo boy is she ever!
I believe Max always had the required level of hip to do that.
Yeah, it was Ari who wasn’t ‘hip’ enough
And Max did catch a bullet, saving Sydney’s life. If that doesn’t grant you a few points, what will
Or I should say, as far as Sydney new Max was saving Sydney’s life. Sense Sydney didn’t know the robbery was a setup.
Neither did Max out the gate, though she probably figured it out pretty quick.
Max already knew before the bullet though
Right after the shot she hit Achilles, and knew it was Achilles https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/253
Otherwise she wouldn’t have hit him that hard.
On the saving life or not thingy. I’d say catching a bullet gives enough hip creds, life on the line or not
Achilles was the one who shot at Sydney. The Pimp Slap was after she caught the bullet.
Yea, but I doubt she figured out who it was in between catching the bullet and slapping Achilles.
So she probably knew it before that
Was still a real bullet, so yeah, Max did save Sydney.
Though I doubt Achilles would have shot at her if Max hadn’t been there.
Catching flying tank parts?
Live press event + Testing classified orbs = worst time possible. Scrapes and scratches might help, aye, but they will last longer than the press event, and Sydney may well be sore the next day (circa 2019?). Sooner or later well know what those orbs do
The PPO isn’t classified
Yeah, but the comment is in reference to a suggestion that the two unknowns be tested for healing abilities, not the PPO.
And the sub-sketch is awesome as well like always.
“You say that like presents a problem.”
Made me lawl.
Darn, gotta remember not to read grrlpower while in class…
Or at work.
I like the page, as usual.
But I have to notice that Arianna seems to be doing a bad job as a P.R.-person, when she allows to demonstrate something to the press without having it properly tested beforehand. This event looks rather unprofessional
Leave the rookie til last, comment on the amount of destruction even an untrained super can do, remark on how even just for containment purposes it’s better to have Sydney here than running around goofing off with her powers.
Seems to me leaving the press with a cautionary message provides good contrast to the more trained and disciplined members of the team and takes some of the edge off having a militarised super group in the first place.
Also Sydney is not last. Max is.
I believe Zephan Zoeng is last, at least alphabetically. At this point I think they have had enough explodey things. I would bring out someone with a different power set to liven the mood. Since they are surrounded by sand, my pick would be an all-harem beach volleyball tournament. (in bikinis of course)
I think Peggy should go last. Why? Because after all that tank’s been through the really impressive stunt would be putting it back together again!
^^^ I agree with this!
The last time she was under a piece of military hardware in that condition she lost her leg
Max can point at the Glass Rings and point out that they resulted from HER power testing SYDNEY’s shield
You just KNOW the press will go, “Photos or it didn’t happen!”
Max’s reply?
“Anyone who’s brave enough to attend a live demonstration is welcome to. Here’s the waiver forms, by the way.” Besides, I don’t see how anyone who saw what Sydney did to the tank would question how destructive she could be towards mere sand.
Especially after seeing Syd’s beam used before the MOST POWERFUL member of the team. That’d be like wanting to see an Orbital Kinetic Strike after a Tactical Nuke.
Gimme!
I’ll bring popcorn!
I’ll be over here. On Mars. Colonizing it.
The meteor strike causes less persistent radiation than the nuclear weapon. One wipes out a city, the other the province (so long as it is not Quebec); life on Earth after that point will be different after that, as in there will be so few of those furry and feathery things anymore. Something else becomes dominant: “The Return of the Amphibian Overlords.”
Tactical Nukes are designed for battlefield use, some with a yield as low at 300 tons of TNT.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tactical_nuclear_weapon
i think they’re doing them in the right order, such that you show the press a series of escalating power strikes ending with the biggest (Max), Sydney being *second* to last only because you DON’T want the press to see HER as the last one, and that she is possibly the MOST powerful member of the team… (WE know she isn’t but in-universe THEY don’t know that yet (or if ever)) the nay-sayers and outright enemies of Archon, those who wanted them to stay hidden,etc.. would twist the interviews and such to make Sydney out as being an uncontrolled psycho that needs to be put down, that nobody else on the team COULD take her down even if they wanted too… thus playing public opinion to THEIR advantage, NOT Archon’s… the only real way to avoid that would be to have Max (more powerful) to be the last demo… and demonstrating her training and discipline and overall leadership of the team… granted, that won’t stop the really hard-core deny-ers and enemies, but it will go a long way to strengthen the public image as Archon having a responsible, upstanding adult in charge, type of view… kinda like the scene in The Avengers where Capt America jumps on the cop car and starts issuing orders for evacuating civilians and such… originally the cops are like “WTF? who the heck is this costumed fool?!” and are preparing to ignore him, until he takes out the aliens… that would be like Sydney (as she is right now) trying to order around some cops/troops, etc… she’d just get ignored… then MAX steps up (in the role of Capt. A) and THEN the cops will toe the line… it’s all about presence, and believability… THAT’S the image that needs to be the LAST thing that the press leaves here with, still rattling around in their heads… NOT “some flying doofus that can’t aim her weapon straight!” as the last thing they remember…
Arianna’s comment right or wrong, I got the impression she got up Max’s nose far more than the press themselves…
Yeah, there seems (to me at least) like there is some history between those two
Said history may involve a pile of rubble formerly known as a mosque
… with Max thinking, “Too bad she couldn’t have been in the mosque.”
That’s why time travel is for.
OK So apologies for being a noob but what’s PPO stand for?
Sorry, but if you don’t know then you’re not hip enough to know. :P
Read the entire comic, and all will be made slightly less unclear.
Or, RTFM, if that gets you where you need to go.
This page of the comic will answer your question.
NO!!!!! A ‘noob’ would never ask what something is, especially if they have no idea, but a newb would ask (would continue to ask questions until that get browbeaten/ridiculed/abused so much they never ask another question ever again… or ignore the flaming jackflats and help other newbs willingly, just so the new newbs don’t have to go through what they went through)
The PPO is the Pew Pew Orb, or PPO if your hip ;)
“or PPO if your hip”
If my hip WHat?
Inquiring minds want to know
“Hip”, short for hipster. Another term for “Cool Person”.
If your hip hops! If your hip does not hop then you’re not hip enough for the PPO, yo.
If you’re hip and you know it, clap your hands.
If you’re hip and you know it, clap your hands.
If you’re hip and you know it, then your face will clearly show it.
If you’re hip and you know it, clap your hands.
You sir have just failed… There is no coming back from the path which you have now embarked upon.
On the contrary, since I was merely trying to be my usual goofy self, I think I succeeded quite magnificently. (One of the most important lessons I’ve learned in life is to never let anyone else determine what “success” means to me.)
“The word hip in the sense of “aware, in the know” is first attested in a 1902 cartoon by Tad Dorgan, and first appeared in print in a 1904 novel by George Vere Hobart, Jim Hickey, A Story of the One-Night Stands, where an African American character uses the slang phrase “Are you hip?”.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_(slang)
So sayeth Wikipedia, source of all knowledge.
This is the best thread ever.
+10
All we need is a few “Gibbs”, and maybe ‘pimp’, slaps and it would be complete.
Don’t even try it Adamas, I see you raising your hand. Remember, I am armed.
*appears behind Bismarck* That’s a well made decoy, no?
*Gibbs-smacks him with a Sydney Plushie before disappearing*
If the forcefield can absorb any blow, and Sydney stays at the center, will it save her from a high fall? Could she use herself as a kinetic weapon? Would she be safe if she rammed something while flying with it?
I’ll also reiterate what I said months ago… Max would make a bloody fantastic single mother.
like in the movie Explorers?! Cool!
That shield certainly is strong, but could it really stop a 6 hellagram rock flying at her at maybe 80mph?
It can stop Max’s shots, so I’m saying yes.
IIRC, though, the shots weren’t at *ahem* maximum strength.
They weren’t, but they were MAXIMA’S shots! I mean, what could compete with those?
i so wanted to see that! i was thinking that there were two things Sidney could have done to the tank, ppo, or use Flight and shield to dive-bomb it. it says in the cast page that Sidney’s creativity in mixing super powers is one of her greatest strengths i thought this would be a great way to showcase that
Doubt it. If the shield comes to a dead stop, than the person INSIDE the shield is exposed to the exact same Gforces. It’s a shield, not an airbag
Depends on if the shield has interior inertia dampeners or not
Maybe, but if she is using the flight orb, her gravity will be what she wants it to be and pointed where she want it to point.
I love the “cartoon” Sydney and Max below the main strip. Plus sand in places in ever fun. Puts a whole new spin on that whole “From Hear to Eternity” beach fantasy, doesn’t it?
I think there was a quote from one of the actors in that movie about that very thing.
There are some places where you don’t want sand though. I believe this applys mostly to females
Great characterisation, great writing, great strip. ‘Nuff said. :-)
aww, Maxima says the nicest things.
Yeah, bet she knows the right things to say to every member of Archon, Super or otherwise, to ‘pep’ them up
Maxi knows just the right thing(s) to lighten the mood and cheer up Sydney (loving the progression of Sydney’s faces in the 3rd panel)
Anyone else feel Suzie will be a HALO-gen* for life?
*new name for Sydney/HALO fans :)
Suzie seems very… enthusiastic. :) I think it’s safe to assume she’s still in the rah-rah camp, yup.
I LOVE Suzie! Her and Peggy are my favorite characters!
It’s amazing how two little words can perk up any nerd’s/geek’s mood
“Level up”
Ari didn’t sound like a bitch for once & she actually has a valid point. The 1st thing she asked was if Sydney was ok. & her rebuttal to Max was spot on. If Sydney WAS hurt they needed to get her to hospital instead of wasting time. If not then they needed to keep the ball rolling in order to insure good press. Good press will help all of them in the long run; not just Ari. Ari just seems like a bitch since she’s very practical about everything. But that just makes her more suited for her job.
Yes. Just yes.
Indeed. She may get on my nerves a bit, what with the whole “twist on my finger” thing, but I can’t help respect her for her general professionalism.
Not only did she ask if Sydney was okay, she also asked “Can we continue?” rather than demanding that they do so. Anyone else think it’s possible that Ari might be secretly rooting for Sydney as well?
Yup. Even if it is for her own agenda, Ari clearly wants Halo to be a success.
Well obviously, she wants to sell collectable orbs
The irony: Suzie is going to drown out all the other reporters. Even 50 feet away.
Methinks Susie might need a change of undies for a different reason than Sydney does.
can we please talk about max’s face in panel 4? XD
She needed to look angry, but the angle doesn’t really work. I think cross-popping veins would have worked better even if they are a little too animeesque.
I dunno. I kinda like the whole “My face is not built like a human’s face” angry vibe there. She looked both angry/annoyed and alien all at once. I like the effect. :)
Yay Susie News!
Yes, those sand grains can grind sharp bits into the soft parts OUCH!
In battle the hat can be the first to go. Sydney is still a piker regarding some of her equipment. So she can be forgiven for minor foul ups.
Naw, Suzie is use to this, she has good bladder and bowl control from lots of exercise.
Love the facial expressions especially Sydney’s as she perks up from Maxima’s pep talk. Rah!
It wasn’t Bladder/Bowel control I was meaning. Young reporter, and her VERY FIRST story is NATIONAL if not WORLDWIDE, and virtually guarantees her station will make her their Go-To Reporter on Super related stories? In her place I’D be humping the news van!
Humping the news van… As much as half of the world might like to see that, the other half would already be looking for a less risqué news station.
Tho, given her energy (8pts) and luck (5 pts), her ability to correctly name people who’s names she knows well (-8 pts), Susie’s ability to stay on as the supers news reporter will depend on her luck. One wrong name at the wrong moment for a super with a big fan following could be career suicide.
But if Syd, Max, and Ari like her, she’s set for life.
It’d turn that channel into my default channel
Am I the only one who despises Arianna
No
She’s slimy and manipulative, but sadly necessary to the team. They need someone concentrating on kepping them “cool” in the eyes of the world, and not on how powerful they are and what they could do if they went rogue. But yeah…pretty unlikable as a person. Good character though. And thats important
Actually, I don’t mind Arianna’s reaction, here. Yeah, Sydney’s a rookie and is shaken up, and yes she needs to have some care, but Arianna’s reaction is very understandable. In a world as interconnected as ours (and presumably theirs) is, Public Opinion is a very fickle and fast-changing thing. There’s regular old assassination…and then there’s character assassination, and the latter is a more subtle yet more insidious and potentially very long-lasting threat. Getting the public on ARChon’s side and keeping them there is very important for their future effective functionality. This is long-range planning and foresight in action.
No, she’s not particularly likeable, and yes, she’s particularly needed. Also, in real combat, Sydney wouldn’t be babied, and would be expected to keep going unless her wounds were life-threatening. (And even then, there are many stories of soldiers carrying on even while missing limbs and bleeding to death, but still fighting to help save the day.) Maxima’s got a soft spot for Sydney, but Maxima knows the store, or will remember it in a few moments…because Arianna is right, a LIVE event cannot be stopped, and must be managed with a show of “everything is back under control” as quickly and efficiently as possible.
*score, not store. *sigh*
Of everyone in ARCHON that we’ve encountered so far, Arianna is (IMO) the one most likely to go completely darkside.
As I’ve pointed out before – she is a lawyer. And a PR flack. AND a business agent / merchandise-y type. Basically, she is the Perfect Trifecta Of Ultimate Evil.
Are we forgetting this guy? https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/808
Nope! Not forgotten.
But he’s not in Archon. Also, you can’t go dark when you are already a shadowy sinister mastermind.
Not forgetting him. But, to be honest, I think Arianna is scarier.
I think Ari’s bare naked ambition is kinda cute. She and Harem share a certain moral flexibility that fascinates me.
I don’t think they share much moral flexibility really, Ari’s like the geeks who roleplay a bad guy all the time, not really a bad person, just likes the maniacal laughter. Harem on the other hand I wouldn’t trust any farther than I could toss all five of her.
Actually, what with the teleportation and the port clones Harem is pretty much completely unstoppable and she knows it. She can’t be imprisoned, and any attempt to do anything to her up to and including killing her would have to be done to all five (or more if she’s got a couple in hiding) of her simultaneously and completely without her knowledge. All it takes is for one of her to get away and she wins.
You also have to remember Harem is all of 19 and a Sensation Junkie to boot. 5 gets you 20 that the main reason she joined Archon was it would A)be Exciting, B) Pays enough so she can do pretty much whatever she wants when/if she decides to leave, and C) lets her meet lots of interesting people she’d never have even thought about on the farm.
As for her working for Deus, she’s probably seeing it all as a game and triple-agenting it.
AT LEAST triple-agenting.
Actually, I’d see any big reveal of Harem’s activities going rather like the endgame in the movie ‘Murder By Death’ (haven’t seen it? shame on you). In that, the “murderer” goes through about six different completely different reveals of his / her “true” identity (and motives) in less than ten minutes.
*hi-5 for seeing one of the best comedy whodunnits*
Trust is a whole other issue. Not trusting either one wouldn’t slow me down if either one (or both) wanted to have their way with me. Uh, if I was a character. ; )
Maybe it’s just my computer, but the emoticon smiley failed and was split between lines. Hard to do on accident, and unfortunate to see. :(
Sorry you had to see that. I hope you’re okay.
Sidney with these expressions and outfit makes her look much more adult than previously :)
… What level is she?
At least level 3 now.
Level 1: Finding the orbs and how they work.
Level 2: Discovering Truesight ability and that tele-Sydney cannot use it.
Level 3: PPO safety and orb management.
And those are just the levels I know about.
There was her round 2 with Math. “3 moves ahead”. Not sure it counts as a level, but there was progress in it.
The math thing should be one of the side things you level up, like thoes power pools from city of heroes or a crafting skill from wow.
The “3 moves ahead” would probably count as a feat, or perk.
except the last couple pages clearly demonstrated she still hasn’t really learned “3 moves ahead” just yet – if she had, she would’ve anticipated the blowback and been prepared for it… I’d call that more of a chapter closing, with this being the reinforcement stage; I’ll agree she’s leveled up when she demonstrates it.
Shoudln’t your level 1 be split in 2 levels?
Find the orbs, start of the quest. You start at level 1.
Find out how they work is good experience right off the bat
My leveling skills are rusty, it seems.
Unless Sydney started at level 0, of course.
Now that we have another closeup of Sydney’s face, I agree with the general consensus that her glasses are slowly migrating down her face. At this rate they will shortly fall off the end of her nose.
Maybe she could check if Archon offers laser eye surgery. They might get a discount by working with another similarly staffed organization.
Hello Miss Scoville, I’m doctor Scott Summers and I will be performing your procedure today. Just sit still and look directly at me while I remove my glasses.
Might work if it wasn’t for the fact that Scott’s eye beams have no heat or cutting ability, just impact.
Well… It would certainly remove her need for glasses. :-)
HAHAHAHAHA!!
*hands Juan a key to the Marvel universe*
Bwahaha!! Took me til the second read to see Maxima’s face in 4th panel! Burst out laughing! XD
Apparently I am thinking too much. What specifically does Maxima mean by orb management? I see too many things it could be is why I ask. Also, where does it tell us how to read their cards? Like what do the symbols mean& a comprehensive chart for the number of dots?
I’m guessing that Max is referring to Sydney’s choice to drop the PPO and grab the force-field orb to protect herself. She made a good split second decision. She could have just as easily have dropped the flight orb and grabbed the shield, which would have been another kind of disaster.
Then again, she might have been referring to the poor choice of flying and launching an attack which left her vulnerable.
There is no real explanation of the power card thingys. You just have to guess it.
Wings is obviously flight, the bubble is a shield, a flexed arm muscle is strenght…
The team goes after some loony who tries to nuke a city or two.
Of course Syd wouldn’t let the chance go by to try a Dr. Strangelove.
Using the hento-orb for making reigns on the bomb and the shield to keep her safe.
Darn, now I wanna see Syd zappa a big honking space-rock.
Except that from what we’ve seen the shield forms a perfect sphere around her which is likely to be smaller than the bomb, thus cutting out a large chunk of the bomb, thus either immediately detonating it or disabling it (I am not a nuclear engineer). Also, if the shield was bigger than the bomb the best that could happen is the shield holding the detonation inside of it. Sydney would still die tho.
She can expand her shield to cover a bus, looked like. That’s plenty big enough for most any bomb.
yes but if the bomb goes off she’s toast.
Maybe she can fine-tune the shape to be body-tight around her, would be a reasonable assumption after some time of training.
Sydney #3 in panel 3 is adorable!
So, next up: Molestorb!
…. hm, many comics after the hentai tentacle jokes, it just occurs to me: HAS Sidney…. y’know, used it for, ah…. that purpose? Presumably on herself?
nope, not in this comic.
outside of this comic, how nows.
*TWEEEEEET!* Penalty Box, 2 minute timeout for creating a Rule 34 of a beloved comic book character!
(lol)
I assume she’s at least thought about it. You know, for science.
Ofcourse for science. Why else?
As awesome as the press event has been, I really can’t wait to see Joel’s reaction when she gets home.
Event Horizon Comics: A bell rings as Sydney walks in the door.
Sydney: Hey Joel. Sorry I took so long, but you would not believe the afternoon I have had.
Joel and that hot customer (the one with the hot-looking sister/cousin) are looking at the TV in the store, with the guys with slack jaws and stunned expressions on their faces. Susie Wen is doing her talking-head thing on the TV. Max can be seen in the background picking up a large ball that used to be a tank and carrying it over to a recycling dumpster.
Sydney: Then again, maybe you would. By the way, I got a new job, so I’ll need some time off from the shop.
Is this going out live? I wish we could see Joel watching it on TV. Even better would be to have Syd in the room when he sees the tape.
The bank interview was live. And that was after Sydney had called Joel about the robbery. So I have no doubt he watched atleast the last part of it.
Joel didn’t know about the Robbery, he was helping a customer when Syd called. But I bet someone’s called him saying something like “Holy (bleep)ing ferret balls! SYDNEY”S A SUPERHERO?!?!”
He sort of knew. https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/289
Once the store cleared again, he probably got curious
I’m an idiot. Ari says it’s live in panel five. So I hope we get a cut to Joel pretty soon. Slightly on topic, when are we going to learn anything about Syd’s family situation? It’s kinda weird that the only thing thing we know about her family is that she’s named for her dad. Mysterious, much?
I’m sure others have said it already, but I’ll still throw my two cp worth in. I like how you showed not only Max’s gentler side, but that as a good leader does, she learns how to best relate to those under her command. With Harem, obviously, a sterner more authoritative approach is needed, as she seems to only work with her. (aka. Max has to scare her into good behavior.) And she figured out pretty well, that communicating with Sydney on her level is going to work so much better than trying to use military jargon with her. Max is obviously the leader for far more reasons than her sheer power level. She can obviously lead. Although the near invulnerability, and range of abilities she has, makes her even better. She has little to fear, and that makes her confident, and that is essential for a leader. All in all, I am becoming more and more impressed with the character’s character. Well done!!
AH!, but with Harem, the “Stern, Authority Figure” approach ISN’T working… remember she’s doing the double-agent thing with the ?weapons supplier guy? Mr.D… pretty much just because Max IS such a goody-two-shoes kind of person, and TOO hard on her… (in Harem’s mind that is, not in reality)
Thanks! It’s mostly on purpose! :)
Only mostly XD
The current full page load lag is: 1 hour, 48 minutes. This is unique to grrlpowercomic.com and some speed test sites cannot access it any faster that I can.
…what’s up?
are you saying that it takes almost two hours for your computer to download the page itself from the internet, from the time you click on the link to the web-page to the time that it is fully rendered? or are you saying that your local clock time is almost two o’clock in the morning before the strip updates “at midnight”? if the latter, then it is probably just a matter of you and the server that David uploads to being in a different time zone that you think it should be in, therefore the time difference…
I’m curious and a little concerned about this too. What speed test sites are you saying show the site taking almost two hours to load? And if it does take two hours for you to load the page… you must REALLY like the comic to stick around for that.
I see a potential problem with trying to communicate via the page that “takes two hours to load”.
You know what I love? I love how Maxima has figured out how to “talk Sydney’s language” to her. The comment about leveling up = total win, in my book, and clearly in Sydney’s, too. Whatever else she may be, hardass (literal and figurative), rabid feminist (understandable given the dimensions of most supers), and so forth…she’s a good field officer. She knows how to communicate with and motivate her troops when it counts. And yes, the post-combat (even just demonstration combat) pep-talk counts a lot.
Aw. I reached the current page already. :(
And not one day has gone by story-wise. :/
But I do like the comic so far. :)
please… MOAR!
stay with us another year or two we should get to the end of the day
Dave has reserved the website another 5 years, so that’s probably when the day is going to end
“Though really mostly her complaint with the press is the bias and fear mongering and shoehorning complex issues down to sound bites, and the press have given them like 2 hours of undivided attention.”
Which doesn’t necessarily translate into a favorable story. I recall a work colleague who, after a fairly major Internet outage in the ’90s, had about an hour interview with a reporter where he explained what DNS was, how it worked, and why the outage occurred. Her story included this as the entire quote from their interview:
“Many things were broken.”
When I found this web comic awhile back, I found it outstanding all the way through the archive. Then for some reason it was still outstanding but something was off. So I waited a month and then came back to read the new backlog and found it was spot on again.
I think the reason is pacing and style. Each comic which is often only a couple minutes in story time only comes out once a week in real time which makes the strongly arc story feel slow and slightly frustrating. It makes for an outstanding read when reading a couple at a time even if you force yourself to wait until there are a few to read.
I know the author doesn’t have time to increase the number of comics a week, and probably would lose something in the larger story changing the pace of an individual strip. And I doubt it will hurt the number of readers since I suspect many get locked in because of the archive.
So I don’t have any suggestions. But I wanted to mention it.
there has been ideas to accelerate production (we donate to him directly so he can quit his job, running a store for comic merchandise to fill the same roll, he drop quality) none have come to anything.
Actually, I find the exact opposite.
I love QC, but these days I read a weeks worth of daily QC’s at a time to get a decent chunk of story.
Which I mention because I get more out of a single page here – Dave really packs these things! :)
But tastes differ.
