We cut away from the fight since it’s not going to be, as at least one reader complained, a 30-episode chocked-full of flashback Naruto style fight. Honestly I tried to watch Naruto once upon a time, and I just couldn’t hang in for fights that legit lasted 5 episodes due to all the training flashbacks to justify all the ninja powers. Like, they’re teenage ninjas in an anime. You don’t have to convince me that they’ve earned their powers. Just show me the fight. I think I lost interest before finishing a single season.
Instead we cut to Sciona’s after work prowling. If that is indeed what she’s doing. Which it is.
Oh, and can I just say, a destination wedding in Cabo? Fuck you, Ian and Clara, unless Ian invented some obscure piece of software that no one’s heard about but is critical for back-end inter-bank fungible exchange transactions blah blah blah compounding crypto tariffs blah blah econobabble etc., and is one of those low-key millionaires and thusly paid for everyone’s flights and accomodations, in which case, well done Clara. And Ian also, obviously. But mostly Clara. The other possibility is that this friend group all somehow are in the mid to high six-figure income range, and dropping a few grand out of the blue is truly no big deal. But still, you know they have that one friend who is doing okay… but not that okay, and made it to the wedding on the back of credit cards and took heavy advantage of the complimentary breakfast bar by loading his pockets with toast and packets of jam and a ziplock back of scrambled eggs that he rationed out by cutting a tiny corner off the bag and squeezing it into his mouth like an icing piping bag?
Can you tell my original script about the trip to Cabo was like, 400% longer than what appears on this page and it took me about 8x longer to edit it down to something manageable than it did to write it?

She may just be sizing up some more bodies for her collection of souls to occupy.
Considering the powers Sciona has in this body I can’t imagine any outcome for this guy ends well. At best he still ends up addicted to her whatever her power is right? Hookups in general must be extra scary in this world since chances are the super hot person you brought home could have powers and who knows what can happen mid coitus? That’s if the assumption that she’s prowling for booty and not body parts or a meat puppet for space elf souls or all of the above.
What if she wants all of the above?
An addled sex-slave to keep her entertained, then a fresh supply for her blood magic once she gets bored with him?

No, she’s a partner in a prestigious law firm and heads up their intellectual property department. Iam *says* it doesn’t bother him that she earns more than he does (he’s a regional sales manager for a contruction equipment manufacturer), but really it eats at him. In five years he’ll start complaining that he wants a family (even though they agreed before the wedding no kids), but he really wants to sabotage her career, and within six months he becomes fully toxic and she throws him out.
And now Cabo reminds her of all that, which is a shame, because she really liked Cabo.
I wondered about that, but a woman probably wouldn’t be a shallow as a man to marry some dufus just because he’s handsome. Probably. Men on the other hand have a rep for marrying the ditzy beauty that will take their fortune and split soon enough.

victims, they are victims for the villain. This is that scene in a slasher flick where the teens are partying and don’t know they are being watched by a psycho who gets one alone, kills them, and then lets an alien parasite infect their body or drains all their blood, or kills them for fun and leaves their body to be discovered before the opening credits even roll.
that’s the vibe I am getting, the opening for the next arc. Well we also got that vibe from tentacle (totally not related to the things that attacked Alari prime…) guy.
that said I suspect given he had some history with Sciona, that resulted in machinery being hooked up to him and controlled *assume Battle Thrall will come up again as something the Alari do to strong warriors they enslave*, that these two are being worked out to be running the same underworld rings and being positioned to run into each other.
So if I get your point right, you assume Sciona built her power-copying, sapient battle golem (which eventually evolved into an independent supervillain) from the repurposed remains of a captured squilike alien of the same species that eventually destroyed Alari Prime?
Interesting theory, and it would fit with Sciona’s M.O., but it does not seem fitting with the event sequence. When she built that golem, Sciona had been on the Earth and on the run from the Twilight Council for quite some time. She had some ongoing contact with her Alari backers, but the chances of them sending her body parts of the squidlike aliens or her getting them by other means does not seem high. Also the destruction of Alari Prime seems to have been the result of a surprise attack.
It is just as likely that Sciona built the golem with a totally different set of body parts from other sources, and it getting a tentacled anatomy was coincidence.
Full agreement that this sequence concerns a villain on the prowl for prey. Hopefully part of the opening for the next arc starring Sciorpia and her estranged ‘child’.
the first part there, the theory is the Alari in general had found a planet of these tentacle beings, enslaved them, and sued them as battle thralls, Sciona just happened to have one as a battle thrall, but these tentacle beings were either a small colony or a *in our likeness* creation by the more advanced ones that upon discovering what the Alari did decided to (remove the threat) and decimate the Alari home world. Its just a theory, one based on their looks, which the Fel also share a similar look so it could just be DaveB’s aesthetic or something in their world building book hinting at some connection, like big powerful aliens beget smaller look a likes. Like why are there so many humanoids being because of a combination of natural evolution and something tampering with different species so they’ve evolve into a similar body type, they preferred.
But yeah, Alari find some colony or *explorer* perhaps, enslave them as a Battle Thrall, they manage to send a signal back to their species or backers who then launch an all out attack on the aliens (Alari) who had enslaved their explorers or small colony. Actually going the explorer angle, if this was all on Sciona or her Alari backers, find a lone or small team of the smaller size of these aliens who (come in peace), attack and enslave them, and after the battle with Sciona that one breaks free, sends a call home reporting what happens, so their homeworld then launches an attack on the Alari.

Interesting and plausible theory. The only serious difficulty I see with it is that Sciona built her battle golem in the aftermath of her first attack on the Twilight Council, when she had been on the run from them for years and Archon supers joined the fray. We know she was in semi-regular communication with Alari Prime, but the opportunity for her to get serious supplies of gear from her homeworld, including battle thralls, in these conditions seems low. Her long-term infiltration mission of Earth seems to have been mostly waged by her with the resources she was able to harness in place on her own.
Your theory would work if she brought a battle thrall with her when she originally came to Earth, kept it around for the entire duration of her conflict with the Twilight Council, and decided to rebuild it into a power-copying battle golem when Archon supers got involved. Far from impossible, but not so likely.
Your theory seems fitting and plausible to explain why the squidlike aliens destroyed Alari Prime, but I am sceptical it is a good explanation of why the golem had a tentacled anatomy. That, in my opinion, is just coincidence.
In the end, however, it is not so important an issue. Whatever the origin of the body parts Sciona built it with, the golem became a wholly new being, first because of the extensive modifications she made, subsequently thanks to the independent evolution it experienced since it escaped the battle with Archon. First it became a magitech chimera, then it evolved into an independent synthetic entity and supervillain.

One finger pointing up in the air moving around in a vertical-axis circular motion. I means she wants whoever she’s looking at to slowly spin around so she can see all sides. It can be used appropriately when asked to judge a friend’s outfit (Friend: “How does this look?” other person: [twirl motion] “Let me see.”), or in this case inappropriately to admire someone’s body.

Oh, it’s funnier than that. They weren’t putting those flashbacks in to justify the ninja powers, they were doing it to stall for time because they kept catching up to the manga which has some flashbacks but a lot less. Profoundly less.
The flashback padding was really bad in that show.
That must be why I didn’t remember the copious flashbacks – I only ever read (part of) the manga and never watched the anime. If you want to see an anime with excessive flashbacks (although despite that it was really quite good), watch Noir. That thing would sometimes have flashbacks to things that happened in the same episode. Plus, these weren’t brief flashes or scenes giving new information – they were literally just a scene from earlier in the show, replayed with IIRC some sort of “this is a flashback” filter applied (I can’t remember if this was the faded-at-the-edges trick, the muted-colors one, or what; it’s been quite some time since I watched it). I mean, there were flashbacks to stuff that happened before the first episode, but I think each of those wound up being replayed at least a half-dozen times.
Omg Jane is the worst! My brain tried to process that conversation, but it is distracted by the micro background people. Maybe it is just perspective since the room is a step down, but it just looks like it needs to be longer/ expand further out or they need to be bigger since they would be closer. The chat noir…lol
The naruto flashbacks…I always was like they are teens who have lived decades to have this much backstory, and how do they have this much time to space out in life or death fights?

I should have zoomed in closer before commenting… headband has blue eyes, henchwoman has greenish eyes. Thinking coincidence now. I was ignoring the red hair dye on henchwoman because hair color is easy to change. Color-changing contacts are more rare.
Yeah, I’m thinking coincidence. You noticed the hair and eye color, I think the nose is slightly different (very slightly), and the henchwoman has a larger bust than headband woman shows in panel 5. Their facial structure is remarkably similar though; if Dave said they were sisters, I’d think they were actually twins and the reason henchwoman is slightly different is because she has powers while headband doesn’t.
Which, that would really suck if one twin could get powers and the other not get powers. I don’t think Dave has brought up twins, so we don’t know.

I watched Naruto and skipped most of those flashbacks; they were so common and repetitive, it was insulting to the audience. Yes, I remember Itachi’s traumatic teenage years, no you don’t need to show the exact same scene for the fifteenth time.
If they were stalling for more manga to be written, they should have just delayed a year between seasons or something.
It was apparently common for the scripts for Japanese anime shows to be delivered right at the last moment, and for the animation to be finished only shortly before the episode aired. All very tight deadlines. If the script was late, a flashback episode was cobbled together.

Another option that pops into my head is that Cabo refers to a beach-side resort in Deleware. Everybody living in the Washington-Baltimore area can just drive there in a short time, depending on traffic levels.

It’s almost certainly not going to happen, but I kind of like the idea of Sciona rolling the dice on a fling with Norm(al) McRando here where she doesn’t just drug him into submission, genuinely enjoying it, and then trying to balance the resulting relationship with all the nefarious nonsense she’s got going on.
Heh. Nice hypothetical scenario, but it would likely take a literal miracle of love. All but surely, Alari sex life is shaped by D/s patterns just like the rest of her culture, Sciona went the deep end in the supervillainess mindset, and she thinks of humans as talking pets at best. I am ready to bet the closest she got to a ‘normal’ hookup was the one she got with Deus. Then again, the same event proves she is potentially able to enjoy that kind of experience, although her chances of meeting someone as skilled as him in a random club are not high. I am ready to bet she would not mind having another booty call with Deus in the right circumstances.

Let’s just hope she is in the mood for a hookup, and the guy gets a last pleasant experience, or even better he proves good enough in the bedroom she decides to keep him as an addicted sex slave for a while, before she switches to collecting blood, body parts, a meat puppet for Alari souls, or whatever her master plan and bloodmage shopping list require.
Unlike that politician and his daughter, here circumstances at first glance do not seem especially conductive to her being on a prowl to recruit a long-term minion, unless she previously targeted him specifically and she is checking if he might be good for… extra use on the side. Hence, the guy’s best chance for deferring a bad end likely is Sciona’s horniness and his own bedroom skills.
Stuff like Naruto and Dragon Ball is really, really not made for animation without many changes. They add techniques, name the techniques, and then the plot hinges on technicalities of the techniques and determination of the protagonists. That’s not going to be paced properly. That will never fit the expected one-chapter-equals-one-episode chart. And then because production times boosting revenue blah blah they add even more filler. That was just never going to go well. Ever.

Never mind I just figured it out for myself. It’s him talking to himself about if he missed out on a threesome before getting interrupted by Sciona poking him like he’s the pillsbury dough boy or testing fruit for ripeness.

Just watch. The guy is a super with the ability to deactivate toxic and hallucinogenic substances immediately. He hasn’t noticed before because he doesn’t normally consume poisons. “Yeah, coffee doesn’t do anything for me. Now that I think of it, I haven’t had a hangover either, but I mark that up to the fact I don’t drink that much.” Sciona is going to be so frustrated.
The guy is fit and handsome enough he might be a super, although chances he might have just the right power to counter hers are far from high. If that be case, however, Siona might indeed be frustrated, since in all likelihood her courtship skills in the human way are minimal. Almost surely, the Alari sex life is based on D/s patterns just like the rest of their culture, and she has gone deeper in the supervillainess mindset that most. Then again, she is still an extremely attractive woman, and many people in an hookup environment are going to ignore poor manners in a potential partner for the sake of that. Moreover, she needed to master some basic degree of human social skills in order to keep her persona.
His superpower is having EXACTLY the right counter-superpower in exactly the right place at exactly the right time – all without him knowing it.

Speak for yourself. As far as I am concerned, sex and violence are two great tastes that taste great together. I do not mind my action-adventure fiction being sprinkled with erotica, and vice versa. Moreover, I am curious about Sciona’s new life on Earth and her new master plan, and every little bit helps. I am hopeful that Dave giving us all these little bits about Sciona and her golem ‘child’ of late means the next big arc is going to involve either or better both.
I doubt this is about Sciona’s sex life. It’s likely that she’s meat-suit-shopping for the Alari souls she’s still got with her.
Quite possible, if she still has any ‘unhoused’ Alari souls with her. This might or might not be the case, given the time since she returned to Earth. She had time and means to infiltrate the US government, so at least a few months. In any case, a top-class, murderous blood mage and artificer always has use for extra blood and body parts. This does not rule out the possibility she might kill two birds with one stone and be on the prowl for some hookup fun in addition to the harvesting. As Deus can attest, she has a healthy libido and being in a super body surely does not favor abstinence.

Shonen anime has a decompressed storytelling problem. A major one. In the Dragon Ball animes, some fights can last like 10-20 episodes. Action scenes? More like INaction scenes.
If you are eating scrambled eggs that you can squeeze out of a bag like frosting, you’re eating mostly-raw eggs. Firm or nothing!
Depends on how well they are scrambled (little bits vs large pieces). Plus the fact that most large-volume places and caterers use powdered eggs for scrambled eggs. Way cheaper and faster, and most people don’t notice. Scrambled-eggs-from-powdered would squeeze out of a frosting bag like frosting.

Speaking of the five episodes for one fight thing in shonen anime.
So while working on (My Mega Dungeon) a writing prompt project I gave myself, and the myriad of other stuff I work on, I decided to binge the first season of One Piece. Now i hadn’t watched the newer uncensored dub yet, my memories were all of the 4kids version. So I in a period of thee to four days managed to watch the 61 episodes that make up season 1.
and I noticed a pattern in the fights that prolonged them, First being it pulls the same thing that DBZ would pull where the main character (Luffy) in this case would be removed from the fight either by being chucked into the ocean, asleep, or got lost and is on his way to the fight.
but the fights themselves had mostly the same pattern.
main tough guy shows up, Luffy and the crew rip their way through the small fry, but then random new villains who I guess were sleeping in the boat and not part of the main attack would show up to fight the other crew members for an episode or two before Luffy would come back and fight the main villain for like the next three episodes, which might include flash backs to the villain motive, flash backs to the protagonist motives, and the fights seem to take up the entire run time somehow.
but then I binged yesterday, all eight episodes of Castlevania Nocturne, which had just as many extra side characters as some of these arcs, but yet more happened plot wise in that time, and these side characters had relevance to the heroes and their backstories and didn’t spend that time talking or explaining their moves, or motives, and their fights were over fairly quickly, yet felt like just as much happened in them…like sort of like that scene in Dragon Ball Super Super Hero where they show the Trunks vs Frieza fight in “real time”. Like Shonen anime shows us fights in (super slow mo what the fighters experience) and shows like (Castlevania and its sequel series show us fights in real time, we don’t get a ton of dialogue and flash backs, just slash, flash, crazy technique that we don’t need to know the name of, history of, or “oh my god they are sending a wall of skulls at me, what a weird technique, how am I going to counter it, I need to act quickly, and spend the next six minutes of screen time discussing how this move works, how the mana/magic/ki is doing it and find its weak pont)…just, oh an opening toss sword there and dodge. Done.
Which to be fair I can see both working, but feel this is like rule lawyer vs DM (vs) player vs player logic in battle format.
I have these debates with myself when writing, because I love world building and writing backstories but its like…would I have Rhulan stand there and explain why her opponent’s anti-magic field isn’t working on her and all the types of anti-magic and anti-anti-magic and differences between magical systems like a Shonen manga/anime battle or should I have just swat the technique aside and while the opponent is dumbfounded move in and seperate his ribcage from his spine.
and I think, the expectations of the genre, the scene, what you as the writer want to accomplish. Although having the characters explain it or a narrator pipe in (which i have experienced with Black Clover having a narrator or the text pop up on screen explaining what is happening).
that said, want a really annoying example of this trope, the anime (Needless) it loved to over explain super powers, and near the end of the anime, right before the anime diverted from the manga (drastic difference, the anime ends a few chapters early and combines characters together and totally alters the plot), there was a battle that spent four episodes of just explaining a character’s powers. Much of it was fighting him, the characters discussing what he was doing and trying to figure out how his powers worked…and then him explaining how his one power which can be quickly explained as energy absorption and release was being disguised as four powers due to a convoluted use of this power. Four episodes…(and then they combined him with a different character that totally negated all of that by saying he actually had power thief and totally could have had these four different powers the whole time but as the anime version chose to needlessly use his powers in this way to say he only had one power he was using weird…in the manga he was it was a different guy from the big main villain.
Cutting out lengthy fight scenes definitely keeps things moving—Naruto’s endless flashbacks were a real drag for me too. And wow, a destination wedding in Cabo? Sounds like a real challenge for anyone not in the six-figure club. Totally reminds me of strategizing in Retro Bowl, where sometimes you just need to simplify for the win!
Long fights? Naruto’s got nothing on DBZ.

Cue up the movie “Earth Girls are Easy” and find the blonde song. It seems that Sciona too “likes them big and … stupid.” I mean, she *could* be considered alien blonde (aren’t they all shades of white hair anyway).
That is one of my favourites, it is stupid but very funny. It is where I became a fan of Jim Carrey, it wasn’t until years later that I discovered Damon Wayons was also in it. Julie Brown doing that beach video is one of the best parts of that movie.
I know it is the beauty of a vicious predator, but damn Sciorpia looks extra gorgeous in the second panel. One of the many perks of getting a super body, she won the reincarnation lottery with this. Given the environment, I am surprised she did not attract a small crowd of men (and a few women) trying to hit with her, as it happened to Max in Muggle drag in similar circumstances. Perhaps she previously scared them away off-camera more effectively than Max was able to do? Possible but Max has nothing to envy from Sciorpia re. intimidation factor.
well by now, she knows there are Alari on Earth, so she might start plotting to get some of them as bodies for her ghost buddies.

I could have happily gone a lot longer without seeing more of Sciona, after that last glimpse we had of her. That was VERY offputting.
YMMV ofc, but please speak for yourself. I am rather eager to get the next arc started for good, rather than any more slice-of-life filler stuff, esp. taking into account Dave’s decompressed storytelling. If it is going to star Sciorpia, her golem ‘child’, or optimally both, that’s excellent. I find them cool and interesting antagonists.
As it concerns Sciorpia’s recent minion-managing/recruiting shenanigans, I found them typical supervillain doing vanilla villain stuff. That kind of abuse of civilians happens all the time in superhero fiction. Think of Zod forcing the US President to kneel or Loki doing the same with that German crowd and monologuing about the evils of freedom.
It makes no difference for me if Sciorpia did it by drug addiction means or the scene got sexualized D/s vibes. Neither is any Special Kind of Evil in my book and BDSM is not my thing. We have seen her doing far worse at the drop of a hat. That politician and his daughter got out of the experience alive, in one piece, and not too bad in practical terms. That’s far better than any other previous associate of Sciona we know of got, barring the usual Deus exception.

I mean nothing they said implied they were speaking for anyone other than themselves, or that their feelings about her recent actions being off putting being anything but their own.

Perhaps a little, but not a big deal tbh, your own interest in the Sciona plot is no less valid than their lack of it.

As was pointed out, I was speaking for myself. The whole foot-fetish thing amplified by the supernatural drug addiction stuff UTTERLY killed my interest in her character.
But that’s just my interest, and you are not bound by my tastes. Since I very much doubt that Dave has ANY plan on abandoning Sciona’s storyline, you are more likely to get what you want than I am, and more power to you.

That foot-fetish thing may have just been part of that senator’s ‘character’, as Sci can affect someone by gently caressing their face (as in when we first saw her new powers in action)
For the record, neither Sciona or I have a foot thing. In fact I’m a little bit repulsed by feet. Not their existence in general, but fetish wise? Hard pass. Sciona was just doing that because… well, she was just being a bitch to a guy she already had over the rocks.
Point taken. For the record, again, neither D/s nor feet are any fetish of mine. My reaction to them ranges from sheer indifference to mild annoyance. On the other hand, a hot supervillainess showing a robust sex drive, being interested in one-night stands, and seducing a good-looking guy to casual passionate vanilla sex is totally up my alley. I love getting my superhero fiction sprinkled with that kind of adult stuff and I loathe any lingering CCA imprint on the genre, definitely including kiddie-friendly chastity. Apart from this, I find Sciona very interesting, esp. since setbacks made her a more nuanced character, and I am eager and curious to see her storyline advanced (and the one of her golem ‘child’).
The only way I did not mind Sciona treating the Senator that way is the same non-sexualized one I may find supervillains doing the ‘Kneel Before Zod’ thing cool in a guilty pleasure, power fantasy way.
