Grrl Power #123 – It’s only trivia until you’re quizzed on it
So Leon evidently has his nerd chops in order. And don’t worry if you had trouble parsing “When does the narwhal bacon?” It is in no way a proper sentence, but to some of us, it makes sense. I will grant it is more of a Geek reference than a Nerd one though, according to my own private definition if the words.
Now something else to entertain you, Fred Perry of Gold Digger fame, which I’ve mentioned a few times before as being my favorite comic is finally doing a webcomic. As well as continuing a regular schedule with Gold Digger, cause Fred is a machine. You don’t even need to read its About section to tell that it’s heavily influenced by Adventure Time and My Little Pony. It’s called Action Time Buddies. It’s just getting started but still swing by and give it a look see.
Edit: A bit of an update, I’ve replaced Bochs with Puck, despite my memory, Bochs was a double amputee, and not actually a Dwarf. Also I’ve added Carrot – there’s a lot of dwarves I could have included but there’s only so much space and Carrot is one of the more notable ones.
You mean “Curse of THE Fatal Death.” Also nineteen Doctors, including Peter Cushing and Richard E. Grant. ::sunglasses:: Don’t worry, Leon, you’re still young.
I thought it was that way around too, I originally had it in the comic like that, but I double checked online, and Wikipedia at least shows it as “The Curse…” The episode itself doesn’t have an opening title though.
Richard E. Grant is counted together with other doctors from Curse, so 18 total.
Aw, a buncha people already got there. ::takes off sunglasses sadly and looks at floor::
I like the reversed trope of a woman questioning a man on his geek/nerd cred. I’m sure Syd has been on the wrong side of the “fake geek girl” before, even though all you have to do is talk to her for more than 5 minutes…
Sydney’s definitely one of “those girls.” You know, the ones that are immersed into nerddom and pretty much only have male friends. I think every one of my female friends has been like that actually.
I find myself conflicted. Leon… D: <3 I have no words.
He’s Missing an Enterprise.
NX: 225 M
Other then that, that is some epic listing of Nerdom Trivia
He’s not only missing the NX-01 Enterprise (225m), but the ORIGINAL Enterprise; NCC-1701 (289m), “No bloody A, B, C or D!” to quote Scotty. Along with the J from the alternate timelines shown in ENT (est. 2 mile) and the Alt-verse NCC-1701 from Trek XI (725.35m), if memory serves. The Mirror Universe ISS Enterprises were the same lengths as their Prime Universe counterparts (using same models with different decorations).
Oh, and the Refit Constitution-class (Ent-A) was 304m. And where does the Ent-B (an Excelsior-class refit) get 487m when the DS9 Tech Manual gave 511.25m for the class’s length?
Also missed the Space Shuttle Enterprise- 122′, and about a dozen different HMS’s, L’-‘s(french) and USS’s.
i almost recognize puck, i think it’s shakespeare.
Alpha flight
https://www.internationalhero.co.uk/p/puck2.jpg
the Puck you are thinking of was a faerie.
Not sure why that pic is labeled “Puck2” as the 2nd Puck is a female (and an attractive ‘normal’ sized one at that)
Because there were two pictures of Puck, naturellement.
Yeah, kinda figured that after posting :P
There’s also the Marvel Comics character Eugene “Puck” Milton of Alpha Flight. He’s not a mythological dwarf, and not genetic dwarvism, but, mystically cursed to a dwarfed stature. That counts right?
blah… Eugene Milton Judd, aka “Puck” rather.
The Puck you’re thinking about is from the Anime and Manga Beserk. He’s a fairy
Man, what a nightmare! No chance to check out the comic all week. But well worth the wait :) Nerds rule!
I have no idea what I just read, there is now a vacuum behind my eyes : )
Oh fuck me! I just realized her(Sydney’s) most powerful attack! First Flight + Shield to reach sufficient height. Give zoom goggles or something to help aim/see. Then switch flight with PPOrb for giant laser beam on target. Finally she beings to fall. If her shield can handle a pounding like Maxima it can theoretically survive smashing into the ground like a Rod From God. Hitting ANYTHING from that speed and height after being softened up with getting blasted by the giant laser would make her INCREDIBLY dangerous.
Bad idea. Even if the shield can work that way (Allowing her to accelerate while ignoring wind resistance) she would either stop or smash through. If she stops the deceleration would liquify her. If she continues she would be buried deep in the earth.
Not good options.
Consider this-
Contrary to popular belief, when the force of gravity works upon an object, there is only so much speed that object can gain before it reaches maximum velocity.
AKA, she wouldn’t keep falling faster and faster. She would eventually reach her fastest falling speed (her maximum velocity) and cease to fall any faster.
Her impact into the ground (or desired target) would cause a jarring force of friction, causing her to decelerate rapidly ‘causing severe bodily injury. Think of her shield as you sitting inside a car. If I were to punch the car while the vehicle is standing still, you wouldn’t be very likely to move. If the car was to smash into a wall after traveling at high speeds, you (inside the vehicle) would violently be thrown about inside the car. In my mind, Sydney’s shields works in a similar fashion. So her falling from a high height with her shield on would still result in her going splat.
I have no idea if this makes sense. I haven’t slept in three days.
I think it all depends on just HOW Dave decides Sydney’s shield works, and to what extent.
My own guess is that it would protect against a terminal velocity fall (or, more to the point, the impact at the END of a terminal velocity fall), but this is only a guess.
I’m also guessing that Sydney has not tried to test this particular possibility just yet. Jumping off a cliff or out of a plane might be taking the test phase a bit too far, even for her.
Given that she was not bouncing around the room like a pinball when Maxima was testing the shield, I think it is safe to say that the shield anchors her in place when active, most likely to avoid splattering the user all over the inside of the shield.
You are all leaving out the effects of her flight (peronal gravity field?) orb which would allow her to control her speed as she wishes. She could wear a flight suit with goggles and use Flight + PPO instead and change to Shield + Flight at the last second.
What about “Red Dwarf”?
Maybe you should read the last word Leon says in the comic…
What about all of the sailing ships named, “Enterprise”? What about the “Nuclear Wessel”?
Poor Chekov always in the background.
Carrot Ironfoundersson: FTW
Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson, actually. Titles are important too. ; )
I’m glad somebody remembered him, I feel bad that I didn’t.
And he really was a dwarf… just a really tall one. It’s the traditions that count
And in case it wasn’t mentioned another world with dwarves is the setting of “The Oath of Swords” by David Weber. I highly recommend this series.
And of course there’s Tungdil (and all the others) of the aptly titled “The Dwarves”.
Win! & thank you, Kilthan.
2 years, 4 months, and roughly 2 weeks…
and we are still on day 1 of the story ??
I love this strip, but it;s a ‘tiny ‘ bit slow paced.
maybe there should be a clock at the bottom of the page LoL.
Well banks usually close between 5pm too 6pm.
So we know it started out before that time, not sure how much time has passed since then. For all we know this strip started in the morning. But it looks like we are slowly building up to the official public reveal of the team.
It has a way to go to beat Mansion of E. Their “endless day” lasted something like 3 to 5 years. And it is a daily update!
Compressed, rather than slow paced, I think.
Err, day 1 of the intro backstory (check the first couple of strips, it says 3 months previous). Dave did a short tease of “here’s the team, hanging out” to start.
Wow, did I misremember! Just checked… Its “a few months” & she wasn’t gaming with the team (red face), thought that would be kinda cool (& what gamer won’t introduce their friends to their favorite game?).
A gamer who has 2 groups of friends, and knows one group are not interested and want to keep them as friends?
I’ll grant that, especially considering that the game in question makes fun on supers (by whatever label). Be interesting to see what comes of her hobby being revealed to her coworkers tho’. I can picture Max sitting in on a session; does she go ballistic, or just feel out-geeked (again)?
Why not have Maxi actually join in a game or 3? Let her inner geek out and allowed to grow again
Holy COW!!!!!! LOVE! *dies from nerd orgasm overload* I need to talk to the writer of these comic strips
Hi!
Well anyway, so I’m no expert in Dr. Who, and I feel that a TRUE nerd should be an expert in actual science, not necessarily science fiction, so along that line of thought, there’s something that does scream out at me though:
Newtons per square INCH? Are you serious? The unit of pressure is newtons per square METER if you use metric, aka the “pascal”, or POUNDS per square inch if you use standard, aka “psi”. Earth’s atmospheric pressure for instance averages 101.3 kilopascals at sea level, which is 101300 newtons per square meter, or 14.7 pounds per square inch, and you need about 100000 atmospheres or 10 GPa to compress graphite into diamond at sufficient temperature. Talking about “newtons per square inch” is a ridiculous mixture of units in different systems of measurements.
But even THAT isn’t correct in concerns regarding an impact such as throwing a punch. One would be concerned with momentum, which is kilogram meters/second, or kinetic energy, kilogram meters^2/second^2 aka the “joule”, or POSSIBLY kinetic energy per square meter. So there’s a little course in basic units of physics.
Kilogram == unit of weight == 1000 gram
meter == unit of length
so what is a kilogram meter ?? weight of a meter? how does a meter have enough substance to be weighed?
Mass*Distance/Time = Energy (or work)
In the Decimal system it would be kilograms*meters/seconds. Since the multiplication sign can also be expressed as a · or even completely omitted when using symbols. One can write: “Kg*m/s = Kg · m/s = Kg m/s = kilograms meters / seconds” and it is all in proper mathematical syntax.
As a side note “x” is also an acceptable symbol for multiplication, however it is rarely used because it may be confused with the “x” variable.
Unless she is not talking about pressure but simply energy-on-target.
A ten meter square of ground does not recieve an awful lot of pressure from sunlight but would receive a fairly significant amount of energy from it the same could be said for a laser test target although both of these would seem to require a time component so maybe joule seconds psi?. Sydney’s comment could be the same thing. And while it would still be an odd way to put it Joules ps/i would be valid.
Now I am in no sense an academic or physicist but this is one way my (admittedly twisted) mind interpreted it.
You know, this has been bugging me all week, and I just cannot hold silent anymore.
The narwhal does NOT bacon at midnight! It bacons at 3 a.m.! GET IT RIGHT, NERDS!!
(…Well, okay, 2:58 a.m., but still, 3 AM!!!)
Citation needed.
& time zone….
i will say something complety irrelevent and random in

I LOVE PINAPPLE
Can’t unsubscribe from this, help?
Why would you want to?
I removed you.
I haven’t read all 457 posts, so pardon me if this has already been brought up.
Obviously there are a lot of dwarves missing from Leon’s list, especially since the inclusion of Tyrion opens the door for a whole slew of non-fantasy dwarves, but the omission that IMO really hurts Leon’s nerd cred is the lack of any Narnian dwarf.
This comic is tremendous. Its a nice twist on the superhero genre, I just regret it took me so long to find it but I am old and computer-illiterate. Read Aces High series many years ago and Watchmen when it came out and they were so much more real than regular comics, no offence to Marvel/DC fans – this is up there with them. Fascinating characters, stylish, couldnt ask for more.
Thanks! High praise indeed!
You forgot the Stetson.
“I wear a Stetson now, Stetsons are cool.” Then River shoots it off, not everyone agrees with the Doctors’ fashion chooses but at least we let him think we like it so we wont hurt his feelings.
… I think River has a grudge against hats for some reason, she is always ether blowing them up or shooting them in some manner. At least she let him keep the bow tie.
In terms of punching damage, the most relevant figure would be the energy dissipation, which will depend superlinearly on the energy area density, and linearly on the total area. So, Joules per square inch, though an abominable mix of unit systems, is the proper dimensions for what she’s talking about, and more relevant than pressure, which is what he gave.
Arrrgh! What about Durkon Thundershield? Does noone else read Order of the Stick?
+1 OOTS reader! Yep Durkon should be in there.
A quote from Captain Carrot, “…Being a dwarf doesn’t mean being born to dwarfs, though it’s a good start. It’s about certain things you do. Certain ceremonies. I’ve done them. So I’m a human and a dwarf.”
Carrot is a dwarf after all and most definitely does count as one.
I just noticed today that the comment at the bottom of the comic changed (I think it was something about specifying a refitting for the Enterprise’s measurements before), but I see Iron Dino (maybe somebody before) pointed out that the new comment is incorrect. Carrot IS a dwarf. Especially technically.
I used to have something incorrect about the Enterprise in there so I changed it. As I recall though, wasn’t Carrot a human that was adopted by dwarves? To me that means he’s not a dwarf, at least genetically.
You’ve got it right if you only read Guards! Guards!, but later books develope being a dwarf into a cultural thing and having gone through the right cermonies. Even in Guards! Guards!, Carrot was treated as a dwarf by other dwarves.
In fact, Leon gets style points for naming Carrot.
For me, the surprising thing that jumps out at me is that the Enterprise E is longer than the Enterprise D! I mean I haven’t read any of the technical manuals, but I would have assumed that a Galaxy Class ship that holds a crew of 1,014 and is considered the flagship of the Federation would be the biggest thing out there!
OMG!!!! DOCTOR WHO REFERENCEEEE <3 <3 =D
Im a nerd T___T
You are in good company here. :)
I guess he doesn’t play too many games…
Not sure how well referencing the Baldur’s Gate series goes as it is a shared D&D Universe, but one of the Dwarves from the Dragon Age series requires a mention. Oghren would be an easy one.
Also Yagrum Bagarn from Morrowind (Dwemer are otherwise known as Dwarves).
I could technically carry on, but I’ve got to leave work to go home.
Technically Carrot is a dwarf hes just the wrong height. (sorry if someones said this already not gonna read all the comments.)
Shoutout to Game of Thrones!
actually he is technically a dwarf because he has done all the rituals of being a dwarf so he is a dwarf and a human
Not sure where this falls, but where are you when the enemy’s gate is down?
yay! A Discworld reference! May there be many more!
“I knew you couldn’t trust them bloody dwarfs. The little bugger must have lied about his height!” (sergeant Fred Colon about recruit Carrot)
You are a terrible person. You didn’t mention Mordin!!!!
:o I’m among my people , Whovians, and Bowties, Fezzes and Long scarfs rock
Also Flint Fireforge from the dragonlance realm
The forgotten geek quiz question, “Serious or curious?”
WHAT ABOUT TRUMPKIN AND ORIC?! (I’ll forgive you for not knowing about Oric from the Inheritance Cycle, but Trumpkin from the Chronicles of Narnia?)
Carrot IS a proper dwarf, as is explained in “Thud!”.
Btw: Which of those dwarves is from Lord of the Rings? And did he list one from Warcraft III?
I didn’t get the dwarf universe question the first time I read this but I’ve reread this awesome comic and I believe I’ve leveled up on my nerd status here because I now get it.
Here’s your card, meetings are on Tuesdays. :)
