Grrl Power #1213 – Vitamin-T injection
Food isn’t mana, but being topped up on calories definitely doesn’t hurt when you’re recovering from most sorts of deficits.
I like a little 4th wall humor now and then, but I don’t usually get this deep into it. Actually, what’s happening here is Sydney is being mindful of the inevitable comic-format autobiography of her travails as a superheroine, and doesn’t want to inflict a lot of tedious technical drawing on the eventual artist.
Actually, she wouldn’t care about that, because as one of the world’s first superheroes, any comic about her would have a team of inkers, colorists and background people working on it, not one single guy who will never draw a car if he can avoid it, and also can’t seem to make heads or tails of 3D programs like Blender despite like… 4 separate attempts to learn it. It’s not that I can’t get my head around the programs, but I honestly think that unless you have like a whole summer to sit down and really dig into them, you just aren’t going to actually learn and retain anything. An hour a few nights a week just doesn’t do it. The only way I’ve ever learned anything was by having a project I wanted to accomplish. Back in the day of dot-matrix printers, I wanted to make my own D&D character sheets, and the stupid things could only do 40 columns of characters, but I figured out a way to force the printer to an 80 column mode, and I figured out how to make the extremely non-WYSIWYG word processors format just how I wanted to fill up the whole sheet with useful information.
Basically, if I want to learn Blender, I need to come up with a simple project to force myself to learn it – which I have done, BUT, 3D programs are incredibly unintuitive. Like with photoshop, you can just start making marks and selecting stuff and messing around with it. Yeah, you can screw up and make it so you can’t seem to make any progress, like you could hit a keyboard shortcut and lock a layer, then you can’t draw on it and none of the tools seems to do anything, but for the most part, people can mess around and kind of figure out what most of the program does.
With Blender… well, let me tell you about two of the projects I tried. One was the shower room that has appeared a few times. I figured it was a staple set piece that I’d come back to over and over, and while drawing it by hand was not too much work, laying all the tile in perspective with the transform tool does take a while. So I made that room in Blender. Honestly it wasn’t that hard. It’s a box with some 4′ high walls evenly spaced. I think the parts that took the most time was finding a plugin so I could use Imperial measurements, and then figuring out how the hallways outside of the room attached and what was in them. The part that derailed me was trying to lay in the tile textures. Sure, there’s a million tutorials for “drag this rock texture onto your sphere and now you have a round rock.” That’s easy, but I couldn’t figure out how to UV unwrap the interior of a room. Not only that, but I needed the tiles to land in specific spots, not “rock goes on ball.” Each 4 foot wall has the blue trim tiles that matches a line of blue tiles on the floor, and each tile has that white caulk around it, so the caulk like has to line up with the edge of the wall exactly. So do I cut the wall into a separate piece of geometry so the blue tile is it’s own object that UV unwrap that? I don’t know. Of course there are people who can do stuff like that in their sleep, but it totally derailed me. Honestly, just doing UV unwraps and texturing stuff was way more intimidating than it should have been.
The second project I tried to create was Maxima’s gun. That seems pretty straight forward, right? Well, me, being the dumbass that I am, thought, “While I’m at it, why don’t I add rifling to the inside of the barrel so I can do some cool, gun pointing at camera shots.” But it turns out that rifling might just be the single hardest thing to model. (I’m sure it isn’t, but for someone who is an absolute amateur at the program, it ain’t easy.) So, there’s a modifier you can apply to geometry to twist it. Sounds easy enough, right? Make a cylinder with some ridges in it so it looks like a gear was pushed through it to create the negative space inside the cylinder, then use the modifier to twist the ends of the cylinder, right? Nope! That causes the middle of the cylinder to pinch, just like how if you twist anything in real life would. The only way I could figure out how to do it was to cut the barrel into like a 1/4″ section, use the twist modifier to put like a 1/12th twist so it didn’t pinch down noticeably, then use an array modifier to copy that section of the barrel like, 40 times. It didn’t look great and I got derailed trying to discover a more elegant way to do that and never finished the rest of the gun. I also got distracted trying to figure out how much twist actual rifling has in a pistol with a long-ass barrel like that. I’m sure the information is out there, but if you look up a gun online, that’s not usually a stat that’s front and center.
My point is that if I had a summer to just fuck around in Blender, I could probably make some substantial progress learning it, but my fits-and-starts method of wildly overshooting my technical ability and then quitting for 6 months has not lead to positive results.
You know that Yotsuba manga I linked a few pages ago? Given that I assume most comic artists, and manga artists especially, are probably fairly speedy when it comes to drawing people, I think 3/4 of the work on that comic is actually done by background assistants. There are some pages that are just like, here’s a picture of a transformer on a telephone pole, and here’s a shot of a shop with 4 bicycles parked in front of it, and here’s a shot of a shinto temple with all those wavy roof tiles and a bunch of trim on the wood and paper stuff dangling in the breeze, and the last panel is Yotsuba’s foot coming down on a puddle. Yeah, that kind of page will probably never happen in Grrl Power, which is honestly too bad because when I do go back and reread a few pages because I was looking for a character’s last appearance or some other reference and then I spend an hour reading back pages, the comic definitely lacks that kind of subdued pacing. Not that I’d want a lot of that stuff, but the occasional page with establishing shots, especially when entering a new setting would be nice now and again.
The September vote incentive is up! Let’s call it the November vote incentive and just say I’ve still got two I.O.U’s, eh?
Well, Dabbler is doing her Dabbler things, and the Patreon version has a nude variant and a comic that… I don’t know, expounds on the goings on of the initial picture?
.
.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like.
I’m aware that Parfait, being part-djinn, tends to hover and float around a bit. But I’d swear she’s a good six inches taller now.
Well, apparent increase in size might not be so unlikely a consequence of a part-djinn (malleable body) supernatural creature having just got a juice refill.
not just taller, she looks like an adult now, until now she looked like a teenager.
Magical creature, quasi-immortal, semi-ageless. Quite possible, they mature contextually, or per-XP, rather than Chronologically.
looks like someone if walking on sunshine
i{is} sorry
I don’t know if to take pity of security or being envious.
Why not both?
Why not both? Pity in the short term, when he has to deal with the consequences. Envious in the long term, when he recovers.
I think you’ve got that reversed. Envy for his time with everyone’s favorite dessert, Parfait, and pity for his likelihood of never have that dessert again, and knowing it.
Fairly sure it was only Dabbles who did that, not a general Succubae Rule
Ah, but the Incentive factor for repeats, just went to S-rsnk Omega level.
Nope, Dabs erased their memory as a courtesy, so they wouldn’t be permanently ruined for other partners. Her amnesia spell took the form of a large hammer, IIRC.
YYRC
Yes, You Remember Correctly
Yes, because Dabbles isn’t pure Succubae
It depends on how long Parfait hangs around as a temp for Sydney, and if and when she shall come back to visit her again. If she stays long enough for Core to recover (in the case of a super, even in the likely worst case it shall take him no more than a few days of rest and food binging; supers’ bodies are geared for maximum fitness by default) and/or she comes back, Parf and Core can hook up again for Round Two. IIRC, Max banned Parf from Archon grounds without explicit permission, but she did not said anything about her coming to visit and hang out with Sydney again.
I seriously can’t tell if Parfait just turned supervillain or not.
Naah, she just keeps being the usual adorable teen succubus not so much mindful of the consequences of her actions and in control of her powers we know and love. Sec willingly nay eagerly engaged in the experience, and has nothing that rest and a lot of food can’t treat.
On the other hand, we now got another eloquent example (besides the Barberian one) of why Max does not allow Dabbler to have sex with her teammates. Sec here shall be useless and incapacitated for a good while, until he recovers. Succubus sex sessions can easily be one of the highlights of your life with no long-term negative consequences, IF you can afford and plan for the recovery time-out (and the likely food bill).
It looks like he might also have lost a lot of muscle mass, which might take many months of hard work to recover.
I’m betting that’s a power effect of his own powers. He’ll be fine as soon as he can spend some time off screen.
We saw the aftermath of Barberian having a sex session with Dabbler. He looked thoroughly exhausted, but no less muscled. I bet one of two effects were at play here, or maybe a mix, to justify the difference. Either, as Dal suggests, the amount of muscle Core normally shows is tied to his powers and energy levels, and he tends to look emaciated when he is thoroughly drained. Alternatively, sex with a teen, inexperienced succubus that is not in full control of her powers may be more physically draining than with with an adult, experienced one.
We lack evidence to tell the difference, such as it may be from observing the results of someone else (super or normal) having sex with an adult or teen succubus, such as Dabbler, Parfait, or Decollete, or even (not likely to happen on-screen, but quoting it for completeness) Tamatha getting to punch her V-card as she seemed eager to do last time she saw her.
For those who would be up in arms against the idea, I shall state that I am in complete agreement with the legal and social standards of my country and continent, which set the age of consent at 14 or so, and have a positive attitude about teens getting to vent hormones and explore with close-in-age peers.
Coming back to the main topic, let’s be mindful that Grrlverse supers by their very nature have optimized bodies to peak human fitness. Even if sex with Parfait turned out to be more physically draining than with Dabbler, surely he shall recover much more quickly, easily, and efficiently from it than a normal. Supers’ bodies are geared to be like the ones of professional athletes by default (lucky them).
Kinda like when Bane had his Juice supply cut in that Batman movie (not the shitty one with the crab for a mouth)
If he is a super the muscles may be an effect of being one, after all the supers all seem to be idealized. If her effect sucked the super out of him for a time he may loose the muscles.
like an anita blake book protagonist
Not even remotely! Parfait cares about other people and doesn’t pretend to be morally correct 100% of the time. Also, she doesn’t casually threaten violence or act as if nothing’s ever her fault.
if threatened, she might
ps. one sec, what do you have against a lady being human, and powerful, and knowing it? i’m curious, what do you think of max?
She is a teenager.
The distinction is small but relevant
red alert aaaaand some one drained the core
over on the other side of 3D modeling we call the rifling on a barrel a swept feature. that may not help you much as that’s a deceptively easy feature. (I cant tell you how many screws use it to represent threads. yes yes its pretty but that screw is part of a pattern and there’s 300 other parts in the assembly.) Then it takes 3 hours to save again.
Yeah, I’m a mechanical engineer who’s been doing CAD for about 40 years now, (Retiring soon!) and while I might use modeled threads on something that has to look pretty when rendered, for normal purposes ‘cosmetic’ threads regenerate enormously faster and get the information across just fine.
I just did twist of barrel and snipped the thin part.
Resize and insert. You only need a cosmetic depth that’s viewable from front angles. Rest is dark fill, or flame if firing.
so blender type modelers do not have a swept feature?
blender isnt supposed to be some super precise tool like solid works so no
Screw modifier?
Boolean modifier?
sweep is a surface modeling technique. the precision comes from the fact that in solid works inside and outside are pretty clearly defined. (Except…. *palmvos stuffs pedantic cad modeler into parfait cup*) blender not so much. the tradeoff is it easier to do textures in blender than in a modeler like solid works. it has not been long enough since I mistakenly took a class that taught the math behind cad or I’d deaden everyone with the formulas.
I think we are seeing the dark side of succubi here. The security guard doesn’t look like he had a good time – he looks like his life force was ripped from his body.
Are you mindful of the ‘too much of a good thing’ situation? I do, and IMO that seems the case here. Even leaving sex aside, there are food (and drug) binges, or tv-series or gaming marathons that engross you so much that you forget to take proper care of your body, until you crash. I bet sec here shall remember the sex session with Parf as one of the best parts of his life – when he recovers.
Even with that in Mind, Core looks like he lost muscle mass, not just fat stores. That will take months to recover from.
Heh. I used to have Civilization on my desktop. After the second time I stayed up playing it till my eyes were physically raw, I uninstalled it . . .
Hah…. Civilization (OG 1991 version) was the first game where I kept saying “just one more upgrade then sleep” until sunrise
It’s commonly referred to as One More Turn Syndrome these days, and yes; Civilization birthed that particular kind of addiction.
For me it was Empire, first on the Amiga, and later on MS-DOS, then early Windows. Game is still around, 40 years later.
If you think Civ birthed that, then you must be young.
> here are food (and drug) binges, or tv-series or gaming marathons that engross you so much that you forget to take proper care of your body, until you crash.
Looks at Factorio…
The factory must grow
indeed, soon the factory will be in orbit. wish the flying trains were more useful.
the factory must grow.
That “Security Guard” is also one of Deus’s guys.
Probably is there to keep an eye on her.
It’s possible he stopped working for Deus (when we’ve seen him, that was a decade ago) and just took a new job.
Someone who ‘use’ to work for SmugD just happens to apply for a job as a bouncer for a comic store part-owned by Sydney?
Yeah, you are right, nothing suspicious at all
I’m pretty dubious that anybody who was working for Deus as a super would take a security guard job at standard wages (remember, Sydney is unaware that he’s a super)
I can’t see Deus as being cheap so standard wages for Core would barely even make pocket change for him
There could be any number of reasons he didn’t want to work for Deus anymore.
> remember, Sydney is unaware that he’s a super
That doesn’t necessary mean he’s hiding them. Sydney wasn’t involved in the hiring process after all, and I doubt she’s taken much of a look into his file. Maybe the information just wasn’t volunteered to her.
In any case, they’re probably paying fairly well, and the job’s probably fairly nice, especially if you’re a geek. If Core’s had enough of being a minion, this would be a nice, calm option to go legit.
I’m pretty sure he had a good time. That just kinda makes it even more disturbing.
He looks bad, but almost surely the physical consequences are no more meaningful for him than being deprived of sleep and/or food for a few days would be for a healthy normal. In all likelihood, he got the super equivalent of being thoroughly exhausted by a pleasurable but excessive or too prolonged effort you wanted to do, such as a gaming, sport, or sex marathon. He shall be back to his usual self as soon as he gets some sleep, food (ok, a lot), and rest to recharge his super juice. Been there, done that, although regretfully for something less extreme than a hookup with a humanoid alien optimized by design for sexual pleasure.
The dark side of a mind controlling and life draining entity with little care for the concept of consent or the harms of removing free will?
The *bright* side of such a creature is harder to discover IMO.
steak and cake?! sign me up!
and if it’s all tofu, the steak and cake are fake
the cake is a lie. it is not fake. it is just a lie.
No, the pie is lye, eat it and you die
I thought the soap was lye?
ohh damn, forgot to kudos the 4th wall break. well done sir.
Can Parfait and Dabbler actually detect supers? That sounds like it could out Core.
Parfait can based on 1205 when she identified Core as a super.
No evidence that Dabbler can and Dabbler admits that Parfait can already do things that Dabbler still can’t
Boy needs some cheesecake. Though he might wince and give a wry sly smile until he realizes it’s food you’re offering.
I wonder if she drained him of more than mana. What if her djinn half allowed her to take in source of superpowers. Now imagine she can bestow the non-mana portion back to someone else.
Could this be how Deus is making Supers? And why he’s allied to Tom?
Deus provides supers with a good, if exhausting time. Then points Parfait at hench #22 who gets powers transforming into a super.
If permanent gift, then OP. This assumes draining of power, tantric energy and mana are regenerating in volunteers.
Else some sort of equivalent exchange is occurring.
Thoughts?
Has it really been established that Deus can manufacture supers? I think just that he has an unreasonably large supply of them.
OK, granted, the super powers seen to be a result of having very special genetics. But those genetics don’t produce a mechanism for a super power, they act as a kind of ID tag that tells the artificial “Superion field” who to grant them to, and maybe what powers.
I suppose you might be able to artificially tag somebody with synthetic DNA. Similar to what Sciona did to temporarily get super powers by injecting herself with the blood of supers.
But, more likely, it allows Deus to efficiently identify supers with a simple screening test.
You are mostly right, but one goal of genetic research about superpowers does not exclude the other, quite the contrary. The likely preliminary research goal in this field is a simple and effective screening test to identify supers. The medium-term one is a treatment to make someone an artificial super, even if you cannot reliably choose which powers the subject gets. The gold standard is to be able to determine which powers one gets with a few blood samples or a database of genetic signatures, and manufacture a ‘best of all’ collection of the most valuable superpowers, kinda like what Sciona was temporarily able to do but on a permanent basis. The equivalent would be what the Skrulls are able to do with their Super-Skrull technology in the Marvel Universe or the MCU.
Imagine the likes of Deus or Sciona being able to build a few Super-Skrulls with a collection of blood samples from the most powerful supers. Well, Sciona is already able to do it, but it does not last, and we are told the side effects are harsh.
Off the top of my head, there’s the fact that two of Deus’ supers were explicitly noted to have only had their powers for a couple of years, during the sandstorm attack, with the clear indication that they weren’t as skilled and/or powerful with them as they would have been if they’d had their powers their whole lives. There was probably other stuff too, but I consider that enough evidence that Deus has figured out a way to artificially grant super powers.
And now we are reminded of why Max forbids Dabbler from bedding her teammates, no matter how much they may enthusiastically agree.
“Okay, now we’ve found a venue, let’s hang up the permit.”
“Permit?”
“OMG! You didn’t get a permit?!” We’re not zoned for super battles here. We need a variance. Seriously, do you not know anything about a good throwdown inside city limits?”
“Oh, wait… was it THIS Parfait you were asking for? You confused me by rejecting the extra syllables that she told me in her full name. I thought you wanted some other Parfait.”
I thought you wanted a strawberry parfait.
or maybe a pineapple parfait with pizza.
“Not that I’d want a lot of that stuff, but the occasional page with establishing shots, especially when entering a new setting would be nice now and again.”
Go ahead, I can’t wait to see whose butt you’re going to put front and center into that shot this time. :-) Sydney already had her turn near the beginning of the comic and broke the 4th wall back then as well.
“I think the parts that took the most time was finding a plugin so I could use Imperial measurements”
I have so many things to say about how you had a perfectly useable program what used a measurement system that made sense and then you spent time to make it worse, but it was pointed out to me that I do not have a solid grasp on what is a joke and what is just mean, specially in my non-native languages, so I leave it to your imagination.
Even worse, he installed a plugin for something that Blender can just automatically do. It’s in the scene panel, right under Units → Unit System. It’s been there for a long time, if my memory is correct.
Granted, I wouldn’t expect somebody who’s never used Blender before to even know where the scene panel is by name alone, so I can’t fault him for not even noticing. Still, I find it strange that a Google search wouldn’t have told him that.
So now we get a better look at the whole group, quite the varied bunch. There’s a succubus, the masked boss demon guy, another of those flame eye people we saw on Fracture and when trying to kidnap Maxima, the Loki horns demon, a purple woman who I wonder might be of the same race as Detla, and a big hulking tentacle mouthed cyclops with a baseball cap.
Yups, recognized the Flame Eye as well, was checking if anyone else had noticed :)
You have to wonder if they are one of the older spacefaring races, the do seem to get around. Or maybe they are just fun to draw.
Dave, you could take a look at Daz Studio or Poser.
Neither have great options to do your own 3D Modelling in them, but both come with huge free and paid online resources where you can find pretty much anything you need.
Both programs are virtual photo studios so they are a (fair) bit more unforgiving with respect to getting the perspective right compared to hand sketching (as in the software gets it 100% right, the hand sketch gets to play fast and loose with the realities of geometry ;) Getting both to line up is not always easy)
if you skip the high polygon count models 8K texture maps and keep lighting to ambient these can be a great tool for quickly blocking out references for backgrounds.
(don’t try to use fully rendered background though, that will look weird and at high level of detail creating images may be easier on your wrist but definitely will not be easier on your time)
Oh dear God… now every time he hits a potential effort intensive scene he can just infer it happened off-view :(
.
I can imagine this with prior battles like Max vs Vehemence
Could be worse: https://www.egscomics.com/egsnp/parable-049

Sidney just broke the 4th wall…?
And she’s not even wearing her Deadpool T-shirt!
no, but she did just knock down one of the load-bearing supports for it
If you think about it, she does all the time. Every attemted break to training montage etc.
the 4rth wall is brought to you by Aperture Science.
If you wanted to take a course for a semester to learn blender, I think it would be a great idea. You could drop down to one page a week, or even full hiatus for the summer, or something (though idk how financially feasible that is considering AFAIK this is your job).
Sydney:Core you’re fired!!!
So a quick internet search on “barrel rifling twist rate” (without the quote marks) quickly reveals that the M1911 .45 ACP has a twist rate of 1:16″, or one full revolution every sixteen inches. With a 4″ barrel, that’s a quarter turn, so if you’re chopping that into 40 1/4″ sections, it’d just be about five and a half degrees per section (1/64 of a full turn).
Is that title correct? This looks more like a “Vitamin-T Extraction.”
Parf was the one getting the injection…
Not sure when the last time you use Blender was, but the UI in the newer versions 3.2-4.0 makes it a lot more intuitive. You do not need a plugin to switch between measurement systems. I tend to specialize in hard surface things, like buildings and starships. Not sure how I would do rifling though….
72 onces steak is in metric is a 2,041 kg steak …
A big steak is about 0,22 to 0,3 kg 8 to 11 ounces
No…. 8-11 ounces is most definitely a small steak..
4 pounds + margin is a *decent* steak….
An 8-11oz steak is only considered “small” in the USA and maybe a few other countries. For most of the world a full half-pound of meat is quite large for a single meal.
The 72-oz (4.5-lb) reference is because of a famous “challenge” at a restaurant in the USA. If you can chew and swallow a full meal including a 72-oz steak, roll, potato, salad, etc., within an hour it’s free. Most people fail.
I did it two days in a row. Right after bootcamp. They were worried I’d come back for day 3, but I caught a flight to Thailand. It was late August then. Pretty damned stormy MAC flight. Had to layover in Philippines for a day due to typhoon.
Made all of us, regardless of rank or reason get shots for standard stds on arrival. Not that the two day storm stopped us from carousing there either.
My best friend on rest of flight was a puke bucket and drama mine. I missed first two weeks of senior year, but worth it. I got back in time to sign up for college courses too.
As a teen I could knock back an 11 once steak with ease. 40 years later, not so much. There is probably more than one place that does the 72 ounce steak these days but the oldest place is in Amarillo, Texas. It dates back to a time when Route 66 was the main road for getting from one side of the country to the other, cars got 10 miles to the gallon and there were hundreds of roadside stops along the way. All of that has been swallowed up by the interstate system and most of what is left of the original Mother Road is in the main streets of small towns that have been bypassed by the interstate.
Check your math, 1kg = 2.2 lbs, you’re describing almost a 5 lbs steak!
I had made the conversion 72 ounces with one ounce 0.02834952 kg
2.041166 kg equals to 4.5 Pounds
and its 16 ounces for a pound
72/16= 4.5
Imperial system is error prone at least …
The math is correct, 72 oz = 2.041 kg (many countries use a comma where the USA uses a period). This is the “avoirdupois” ounce used officially in the USA and unofficially in Great Britain.
You used “troy” ounces, where 72 ozt = 2.239 kg. Troy ounces are typically only used when weighing small amounts of precious metals. While some may consider a 72oz steak to the “precious”, I believe the standard ounce is the more proper unit.
Even more fun, there is the “fluid ounce” still used in the USA that is a unit of volume completely unrelated to the unit of weight. It’s so sad that the USA refuses to switch to the metric system :(
All of our packaging has both metric and imperial units on them, and we have technically been on the metric system since the 70’s. I figure it won’t really catch on unless all of the publishers start to print recipes in metric units. The brain is ruled by the stomach.
Not exactly the Convention du Mètre -Metre Convention – date back to 1875 and was signed in Paris on 20 May 1875 by representatives of 17 nations: Argentina, Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Peru, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden and Norway, Switzerland, Ottoman Empire, United States of America, and Venezuela.
And since 1959 customary units are based on the metric system the definition of one inch is 25.4 mm length.
To convert feet in meters a quick and dirty method: divide by 10 an multiply by 3..
A ten feet pole is in metric an approximately 3 metre pole ( exactly 3.048 meters) a 5 foot step is about 1.5 metre step.
Yes my langage use coma is used and “avoir du poids” means literally “to have some weight” or “being heavy” for the mean in an old arcane langage spoken in Paris not Texas …
A metric ton, a tonne* is 1 000 kg , aprox 2 204.6 pounds, 1.102 short tons, and 0.984 long ton,
a short ton 2 000 pounds (907.18 kg) and a long ton 2 240 pounds (1 016.047 kg)…
Use metric it’s more simple and its composed of base 10 exponentiation…
And for metric it’s in use in my country since 1791…
Dave, I consider myself a novice Blender user still, but I have couple of ideas/tips you can use in the future. (this all hinges on what version you have…I’m currently using 4.0.)
First, you don’t need a plug in for switching to Imperial: under the ‘scene’ tab there’s a drop down called ‘units’ that enables you to switch between Metric and Imperial. I only recently discovered this myself.
Next, I admit I struggle with textures/UV myself, but for things like tiles, I would have likely used the modifier called ‘array’, instead of a texture. Model the individual tile, then use that modifier to create a whole row of them along one axis (perhaps make a copy of the ‘original’ as backup first), apply the modifier, then use the modifier again, only this time on a different axis and apply again. You have a whole plane of tiles!
Just to show off…https://www.deviantart.com/slaskia/art/3D-Model-Restored-Star-Saber-891932717 No UV mapping/textures here…that’s all physical model colored used material nodes.
I think you used to need a plugin for imperial, but I could very well be remembering it wrong. I’d thought about making individual tiles, but I kind of assumed that would bog me down quite a bit instead of using normal maps on a texture, but with arrays? Maybe it’d work just fine. I never got to that stage, but the next time I take a crack at it I might try that route.
Yeah, as I said, I only recently found out about the setting the measurement preference myself, so I have no idea if the option was always there or if it was a recently added feature.
If you do try again, here’s another suggestion: if you get a model finished to your liking (or a part if it, like a tile…), you can mark it as an ‘asset’ so you can easily use it again in a different project if you need it via the fairly new asset library (I forget the version that was introduced…I want to say 3.8?). It is so much easier than having to hunt it down and using the ‘append’ function or remodeling it from scratch everytime you need something specific.
Have you ever heard of the book “Blender 3D: Noob to Pro”? You can find it online at WikiBooks for free. It’s a rather hands-on tutorial, so you learn much quicker. I think it took me 3 hours to create a stick figure with a top hat, and most of that was just reading the first unit, which is mostly just terminology, concepts, and what the heck you’re looking at.
It’s four units and teaches you pretty much everything by doing. Modelling, sculpting, texturing, rigging, materials, lighting, you name it. Slight downside is it’s a bit old, so some features have been moved or renamed — but 90% of it is still the same and a quick Google search on “where is X tool in Blender” will catch you up on the 10%.
I’m worse than a novice at Blender…I did one slideshow video with audio on top, but that’s it. However, a typical twist rate for pistol rifling is 1 full rotation in 10 inches. It fits the profile of the Beretta M9 and other 9mm handguns. Bigger bores tend to have smaller twist rates (1 rotation in 14-18 inches for a Desert Eagle) because it’s harder to get a larger bullet rotating due to inertia.
All in all, an impression of rifling at the muzzle is going to be more than sufficient. Although I don’t make a habit of looking down gun barrels when the gun is assembled, it’s still pretty dark inside a gun barrel.
Twist rate is a stability calculation based on the size and velocity of the bullet. The bullet has to spin fast enough to remain stable and not start tumbling end-over-end. Slower bullets (such as subsonic bullets used with a sound suppressor) need a tighter twist rate so they spin fast enough at slow speeds. Longer bullets also need to spin faster than short bullets.
I don’t remember if the caliber of Max’s gun was published, but the twist rates for a standard 9mm handgun vary from 1:9 to 1:18, with 1:10 being most common (as you said). Other calibers range from 1:6 to 1:30.
For graphics purposes, just pick one. The 1:10 suggested works as good as any.
Second panel: Poking holes in the fourth wall again, Dave?
If that confrontation is still going down, I suspect we are going to smell some banana split.
4th Wall Sydney! Don’t break protocol like Soundwave!
Yeah once you start getting into blender and if you want to be semi realistic, I can’t find you start eating all kinds of models and then you have to deal with well is it lying can I use it etc etc can I make it. Heavens help you if you have to make a parking lot of highly technical mechanical devices EG cars and make them look anything like real cars but then you have to deal with again copyright and etc etc etc etc.
Then after a while you’re like oh hell cheese it. I’ll take a cylinder look down the center of it and UV map only one rectangle of it and paint that instead to look like a spiral because getting it precise just doesn’t freaking matter. Then you get the super uber producer brain that goes hell I want a really fine detail of part blah blah blah- auughhh!
. I mean things like SVG I could at least screw around a lot with it with inkscape. But for me dealing with things like people and characters of God no. So don’t underestimate your ability to draw smexi characters.
Oh no! That parking lot has a stadium parking lot of fast and furious high dollar cars with $120,000 paint jobs with fractal pictures all over them. Oh dear we just got a asteroid nuke from orbit and the grey dust cloud is overwhelm the camera!
Mmmm I smell sucu-cookies – time to recharge
Let me guess – after her “meal”, Parfait can take these three losers without breaking a sweat.
@Dave
Blender 4 is waaaay easier than Belenders 1-3 and is newly released.
I recommend these tutorials here, they’ve become standard.

… helps if I put the link in… *sheepish*
Strangely enough, Core just got porked but now he needs a good porking.
Maybe Core should get into the entertainment industry so that he can ham it up a bit in front of an audience?
Parfait seems to enjoy living high on the hog though.
I am impressed. tell me does it spiral down? or have you found the bone?
Oops, the Cat..scratch fever.. is out of the bag! -and right in front of the yahoos looking for her! Quick! Hide Parfait!
Another webcomic that I followed a while back had some even more dramatic 4th wall breakage. At one point, the characters were going through an ancient temple in the style of Indiana Jones. They avoided traps by always positioning themselves so that any trap they set off would *have* to be drawn by the cartoonist.
were there sticks involved? perhaps ordered?
No, it was Triangle and Robert. (Robert was shaped like a rhombus because the cartoonist’s drawing tools were limited.)
I think I have an idea of how I can get my cameo in-comic, but I think my superpower might give Parfait indigestion. I’m a time-shifter, my mind and body get out of sync with time sometimes (pun-not-intended). That’s how I know things I shouldn’t have known, and how cars and trucks that run into me look like they collided with objects weighing tons, without causing me anywhere near the damage I should have taken.
honestly if you want to learn how to use blender just make the donut tutorial is the best, most comprehensive and feature full tutorial on learning how to use blender for absolute beginners in the internet

i learned to use blender with this tutorial, well not this one specifically an older version but this is one is for the latest and greatest version of blender, this tutorial is how they made the bagle for everything everywhere all at once for example
its basically a tradition that if you are learning blender you first need to cut your teeth making the donut

Author-san, your cast page is fucked and is showing me divs. I’m using the latest version of Firefox, on Mac.
Well, Parfait is there, the immediate demand has been met. So if there’s a fight, it’ll be over what happens next.
Parfait’s belly looks super toned! Has she been exercising her core?
That… was very good. Here’s a six-pack for you.
I really wanted to do something with parfaits having layers and the ol’ “Layer? I hardly know ‘er!” joke, but couldn’t quite get it to scan. Some jokes only work if the shape of the surrounding CONVERSATION is correct, y’know?
