Grrl Power #1166 – Relationships are built on awesome lies
Okay, I know this seems like a bit of a jump in the conversation, and it is, but it’s also made worse by the fact that I forgot to add a line at the end of the previous page. If you don’t feel like jumping back to check it, the last panel had Max saying “So, about that drink.” I’ve added “But first you gotta tell me about that moustache.” (I also fixed one of the Russian words, apparently I had the verb for “respect,” not the noun, so hopefully now it makes more sense if you can actually read Russian.)
It’s still a bit of a jump, even with that lead in, but I’m trying to compress this scene a little without leaving out any particularly salient exchanges.
If you’re a superhero with a secret identity, you enter into any relationship with a pretty major omission already on the books. In Superman’s case, he really is Clark Kent and he really is a reporter. He just leaves out the fact that he’s also Superman. In Max’s case, she is a superhero and that is her identity. Her civilian disguise here is a total lie, which is definitely worse than the omission route. She can defend this by saying she’s just looking to spend some time around normal people. She doesn’t want to say it outloud, but she’s realistic enough to know that most guys wouldn’t get tooooo upset about being tricked into getting to second base with the most powerful superheroine in the world.
I can promise you that Max isn’t going to take some guy to bed only to find out first thing the next morning that he’s the president of the “Humans First Anti-Superhero League and also We Hate Powerful Women and We Hate Being Tricked into Sex Because for Us Sex is About Dominating Women Because We’re Terribly Insecure but Can’t Ever Admit That to Ourselves or Others Because We Stopped Developing Emotionally Somewhere in Our Early Teens.” It’s been done. And while I can definitely think of some ways to play that for laughs, it’s honestly not the direction I want to take the comic.
Previously it was established that Max’s Harper identity is “CIA-grade” (which is probably not proper spook talk but I needed an easy to understand reference point) and that identity comes with tax and employment records. At some point, Harper’s career was discussed, and they settled on “Professional Stuntwoman.” In some ways, it’s a slightly easier cover to maintain because unlike in, for example, True Lies, Max doesn’t need some intelligence operator sitting at a switchboard waiting for someone to check on her credentials like what might happen if she said she had some office job. Presumably a lot of stuntwork is word of mouth through other industry people. A deeper dive into movie production insurance records might turn something up, but again, Max just needs a passable ID, she’s not about to take Harper into deep cover.
Max knows something about what it takes to flip/blow up/shear/toss cars around, and she has military experience with explosives. She’s also a pretty skilled fighter. Not Math/Jabberwokky skilled for sure, but she knows a lot more than just how to punch hard. Add to that a few 20 minute stuntman behind the scenes videos on youtube and she knows enough to fake a conversation about it. Well, unless she happens across an amateur enthusiast, then she might get caught out, but she just wants a night out, dang it!
Honestly, I don’t know how realistic it is that someone could actually be a doctor and a firefighter. Let’s presume he has his own practice and has some control over his hours, and he’s a part-time firefighter, and the two things take up nearly all his free time. I feel confident that what someone couldn’t do is one of those insane hospital residencies with 40 hours shifts and literally anything else. So we know he’s past that stage of his career, at least.
I recently watched Tacoma FD, (helmed by 2/5ths of Broken Lizard (the Super Trooper guys)) doing a firefighter workplace sitcom, and like most workplace sitcoms, there’s very little actual work going on. Maybe I overestimate the downtime, but maybe Rowan station is in a very damp precinct and there consequently aren’t a lot of fires? Anyway, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
- I keep forgetting to mention, but Binding Words 10 is out, both kindle and audio, which is my favorite Daniel Schinhofen series.
- Also out is All the Skills 2, an entertaining Deck Building LitRPG which I’ve enjoyed so far.
- Of special interest to me is the Kickstarter for Tamer, King of Dinosaurs book 9. One of the add-ons is a short story about Sheela’s arrival in dinosaur land, which sounds entertaining. I say “of special interest to me” because if you’ve somehow missed it, I have written two full length Tamer novels of my own. I hate to call them fanfics, because to me ‘fanfic’ just means canon characters doing extremely non-canon and usually out of character things. My books just use the same setup, but are wholly original beyond that. I don’t know if there’s a word for that, so I tend to fall back to calling them fanfics. Anyway, check out the sidebar for links to those.
The June vote incentive is finally up! Maxima is prepping for her night out.
And in the Patreon variants, she gets (un)dressed and takes a look through all the makeup options.

I got hit by cars alot, but nobody ever paid me for it. In fact some even tried to make me pay for the damage I did to their cars when they hit me, and that one time I got passed on the right as I was trying to make a left turn and waiting for traffic to clear in the other direction and I punched his driver side mirror off, like hanging from the wires off. Since that was damage sustained during an illegal pass I didn’t have to pay, but it was annoying to have to go to court over it.
“If you’re a superhero with a secret identity, you enter into any relationship with a pretty major omission already on the books.”
Unless you’re a telepath and you begin the relationship telepathically.
I like how satisfied Max is in the last panel for nailing her line delivery on that cover story without having to lie.
but she did lie. she is not a stuntwoman.
she does get hit by cars yes.
its all in how you look at it…
she does all kinds of stunts recent examples- nearly destroying a bridge while attempting to apprehend someone. walking on the ceiling without sufficient support. then there’s the classic misuse of concrete column. Also there was this mosque.
Yep. Superheroes are, if nothing else, stuntwomen.
AMA firefighter. I have a coworker who is an anesthesiologist (an MD), who rides the truck rather irregularly but is unambiguously a firefighter who is also a doctor. And there’s a multitude of them who are also nurses, and one who’s a PA who actually does firefighter as the full-time gig. Then again, I also have a part-time coworker who is a full-time engineer at Amazon, go fig.
It’s not that the fire service attracts doctors and engineers, it’s that they start out there and never fully leave.
I know a guy who has a full time job, also leads a church congregation, has teenagers with all the associated ball games/track meets/etc, and is still a part-time firefighter. He also just renovated his kitchen, no contractors involved. So finding out anesthesiologists, nurses, PAs, etc can be firefighters does not surprise me at all.
Still, I have to assume my friend never sleeps.

In She-Hulk, no less. /spoiler
A very good idea to not duplicate that show :)
Ugh, if I had a penny for each time that had happened to me…
… I wouldn’t have any pennies, but it’s nice that it hasn’t happened. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve dated emotionally stunted people who hate others being better than them, but Humans First Anti-Superhero League? Fortunately, I’m clear of that one.
He was a superhero truther. Different animal.
I have a friend who is both a doctor and a lawyer… somehow. He first passed the bar in ohio and pennsylvania (they are very similar bar exams, like NY and NJ), then after a few years practicing (not that successfully) he went to med school and wound up becoming a cardiologist… plus kept paying for his bar renewals and CLE courses so he is technicslly still a lawyer as well. Took him about 13 years of schooling after college – 3 for law school, 4 for med school, 3 years of residency, and 3 years of fellowship. Not including the two years he practiced law. Compared to that, being a part time firefighter on top of being a doctor seems very doable to me
… did a guy in a wheelchair and a top hat give your firm haystacks?
John Deere steampunk motorized wheelchair, with monster truck style tires
None of those things.
I… what? huh?
yeah…. (banjo plays in the background)
I am so very confused right now.
No worse than when my son showed me a meme of a tall, bodybuilder wearing a blond wig and a “mankini”, pushing a skinny guy in a wheelchair wearing dress with a captain’s cap and aviator sunglasses and waving 2 AK47s down the street…
I told him thanks son, I didn’t need those brain cells I had to kill off to make any sense of that, as well….
buh?
The wheel chair bit from hydrobubbles made me think of redneck off-rode trucks, and all the silliness that followed, I just thought I’d finish it off with that horrific memory that bleach couldn’t wash off of my eyes…
Btw, I forgot the 8 inch spike heels the big guy had on, either it was suppose to be funny, or the big guy did it to make the little one in the chair happy, the expression the big guy had on his face told me someone would die if they said anything to him… in the worst way possible… Think Max if Masshole was able to yank her top off in the fight…
Additional notes:
– Max is prettier than she is skeptical. Don’t get me wrong, she is very skeptical. But, she is very, very pretty.
– Yeah, we see HijabGuy (making me look up his name *grumble*…) Darude in Panel 6…
I like this dude. He’s both awesome and humble – if I wasn’t VERY straight, I might go for him myself. :)
Yea, he seems pretty cool. I’d consider him if I was straight. Unfortunately for him, I’m a ladies’ woman.
I can totally respect that “I became a part time fire fighter to help keep me in shape.” Like, legit way to do it, and knowing you’re saving lives helps keep the motivation up. That’s actually really smart of him.
Glad to see she’s finally relaxing somewhat outside of HQ so she doesn’t go Mindbreak levels of workload.
Personally i would very much like someone i was about to be romantically invested into reaffirm to me that
“yes, i am on the world wide political scale and part of the military, many groups are directly out to get me and will most likely use my friends and loved ones as potential targets if they were unable to directly harm me, which they wont be able to since i have superpowers. also yes i have superpowers. so it is not just the world political scale it is not all the supernatural things you can think off. Also aliens… all those aliens out there that know me by name and my abilities. So how about a drink?”
One would hope that that didn’t need to be shoehorned into the first sentence.
its in the fine print that one accepts when one unhooks the bra.
“So which ones have you been in” “Well remember that explodey car in (insert title) where all you saw was fire, shrapnel, finely toned legs in jeans that somehow weren’t burned. but the face was hidden?”
I love this guy, part of me is cycling the voices of charming, but not physically over attractive for his voice, I think I’ve settled on Owen Wilson…
Max might need to worry, unless it’s actual sweat, I think the makeup might be wearing off a little, or so my eyes tell me, as the sheen looks more golden than slistening .. >_>
Makeup?
That’s illusion magic. Long as the magic batteries don’t bite it, she’s going to be fine.
Unless we’re not getting her waking up in a hero haters bed because the comedy of errors includes the magic battery exploding dramatically.
Should that lady in the purple dress come back and tries to push them BOTH to the exit door.
“Okay you found your guy,now let us sixes, sevens and eights find ours!?!?!?”
Not really, once they are interacting it sets the tone for others.
Panel 5 looks really good but also not really like Max
Amateur enthusiasts are a way bigger risk while going out, than while you’re being investigated.
Also proper spook talk for what is meant by “CIA grade id” is probably “witness protection grade id”.
The CIA mostly operates outside of the borders of the USA and is thus more concerned with resource constraints when making an id and reliant on hiding less “famous” people(witness protection sometimes has to hide all kinds of fame from made men to celebrities with “contacts”), than the witness protection program.
She is a woman. She has performed ‘power stunts.’ :) Her stunts do not involve jumping cars with motorcycles. She gets hit with cars. She is a professional. Her one lie is that she has done so in movies but I am sure Ariana will be putting her in one eventually for merchandising reasons. :)

“It is technology, and it is on earth, therefore a reasonable semantic argument…”
I don’t understand this post.
I believe Karishi is referencing Deus’ argument that his mass-fabs are earth tech, and how it’s similar to your argument for Maxima’s lies being minimal:

Ohhhhhhh.
If this isn’t a publicity stunt performed on camera then I don’t know what is

The Corridor Crew guys are discussing specular and sub-surface lighting today.
I could have posted this in a comments from a year ago where they were tweaking the Chroma-Collar but no one would see it.

As it turns out Dave, my brother is in fact both a doctor and a volunteer firefighter, so it can happen. He’s super into the firefighting since he started doing that. We live in a small town so we are unlikely to lose him in some Towering Inferno type situation.
So how does this “firefighter” thing work? Here in UK firefighters are (almost) all professionals employed by local or regional fire brigades. There are a VERY few volunteer stations but I can’t think of one right now
In my case, it was a requirement for my job, I was a factory mechanic and part of that job was to respond to any fire in the building, reducing the risk to both assets and personal. I was registered as a volunteer fireman and had gone on more than a few fires off-shift. “Volunteer” just means we want to be there, but the city doesn’t have to pay us. They are required to cover any injuries while on a call, and provide us with the tools and equipment to be able to safely fight fires, but that’s all. And before anyone asks, the factory had 2-3 fires a week so yes it was a needed thing. I hated the hi-risk firesuit, it was thick, heavy, shiny, and was damn hard to walk in. Not to mention the never-ending robot jokes from wearing the suit!
Just about every car/truck/SUV on the market in the mid-late 90s had our parts in them.
“Every car made in the 90s” and “2-3 fires a week at the factory” should not appear in the same paragraph. o_0
It’s okay, they did a cost/risk analysis, and calculated out how much they would lose in lawsuits, versus the profits from skirting safety regulations. It was a very calculated risk, and 2-3 fires was considered respectable, and you should respect the research they put into it.
I’m an engineer, I get better than most that a target of absolutely 0 bad things is neither practical nor optimal for both process and business reasons. I’ve even done some work around those calculations, for consequences up to and including loss of human life – which, for the curious, was valued around $4M for risk avoidance purposes. It’s a ton of work that is rarely noticed or appreciated, and I totally respect that aspect of it.
But I’m still very, very curious about any well-refined production system which still catches fire 2-3 times a week and is considered ahead of the curve. Guessing there were some interesting chemicals involved.
Oh, I never said ahead of the curve, I just said still profitable.
Actually, there are quite a lot of fire stations whose personnel consists of one or more retained firefighters. And in the more rural areas, many fire stations have no regulars, just retained personnel.
If you want actual stats, there are currently over 18,000 retained firefghters and around 30,000 regulars throughout the fire & rescue services in the UK. So, that’s over a third of all firefighters who are retained.
We’ve RP’d as a superheroine who used being a stunt woman as a cover before. It’s great for explaining the odd hours and random injuries obtained on the job right up until you find out the person your lying to is directing a tv show and wants your IMDB.
Max could probably have an easier time with the truth. She’s with the military, just got back from overseas, and isn’t at liberty to discus the specifics of her job.
“I use a stage name for the credits, and even though I really appreciate the offer I’m taking a sabbatical.”
I get she has a secret identity government thing. Although you did have Maxima give Sydney a talk early on about how they don’t have secret identities and will be famous. But maybe she needs this for undercover work, before the collar there were masks like used in the bank heist. That said she is basically just feeding this guy a pack of lies about herself for a possible casual hook up which has this whole other uncomfortable side to it. it’s not like he is a suspected agent for an arms dealer.

DaveB – I curse your favourite pig with Heterochromia for recommending the ‘All The Skills’ book series in your June 29th comic! Yes, I’d recommend them too, except for the fact that Honour Rea’s only written two thirds of the third book! So it’s going to be months before the third book is finished! Then months before it actually gets published! Might even not be available until next year! Still, that will be a valid reason to re-read the first two books when it does finally get published.
“May you live in interesting times and also enjoy the unfinished Kingkiller Chronicles.”
I appreciate the thought-provoking insights presented in this article. It goes beyond the obvious and prompts readers to consider various perspectives, making it intellectually stimulating.
I like him better than Deux ex Badguya.
