Grrl Power #1087 – Adulation escalation
Now that Arianna has gotten past her “knife hucking reaction phase,” she’s had time to stew in the staff saferoom and really concentrate on freaking out over how really super close she came to losing all of her skin and muscle and bones to a jerk with fire powers. Dr. Frost may have a new patient.
I’m enamored with the idea that Goon Squad comes from a large family of siblings and they all have weird variations on duplication powers. I already joked that he had a brother named Brute Squad who can make far fewer dupes than Goon, but they’re much bigger and stronger. Maybe there’s a sister named… I dunno, Fruit Squad? Or Fruit Ninja. They don’t all have to be Squads necessarily.
You may notice this page has slightly simpler coloring than usual. I mean, maybe some of you wouldn’t right away, I personally can get pretty engrossed when reading and can miss dramatic shifts in art style sometimes. Anyway, I’m out of town for a few days because I’m going to go see Rammstein in concert. The wife got tickets for a 2020 show, but as you might guess, it got pushed back, twice. Normally taking a few days off wouldn’t affect the comic because I do have a tiny buffer, but at the last minute, I decided the page that I’d originally intended to go here would be better if I put it off for a few pages, because otherwise it’d look like Maxima’s trip home took like 6 hours or something, which it definitely didn’t. So I find myself in the odd position of “finishing” a page then almost immediately posting it. I’d like to say I’ll come back to this page and finish the coloring work, but I kind of don’t hate the way it looks? Hiro’s block of a head is a little plain looking, but maybe a quick highlight pass would help. Doing the shading like this took like, and hour? For this page and the next one. And some of that time was trying to keep myself from going in with the blur tool and really smoothing out those hard cell shade lines. Normally it takes all day to do all the foreground coloring. I don’t want to make a bunch of sudden changes to how I do the art though, because that’s jarring to read. Although, if I started a new storyline and signified that with a chapter splash page then I could justify experimenting with the art a little easier. It’s still be jarring, but it would be encapsulated.
The September Vote Incentive is up!
Thank you guys so much for your patience. I hope it was worth it. It took a lot of research online to find just the right references for this piece. Toil toil. :D
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like.
Gotta say, I don’t hate the more “matte” coloring scheme
Yeah I think I prefer it!
I was going to say the same! There is beauty in simplicity. Also, maybe of this makes things easier for dave( and quicker) maybe we could jave 3 pages a week?
J/k.
Dave you do a schedule you feel comfortable with.
I’d definitely choose more pages with ‘good enough’ art (not that it’s up to me) -and this art seems good enough to me.
Same here
Honestly I adore this look, it fits a superhero comic much more and allows it to look a bit more like it used to when I first fell in love with it. The ‘realer’ art is pretty but far less flexible especially when it comes to Sydney’s expressions. This is great. :3
Yeah I would like to see more of it so it would be nice if Dave want to give it a try.
+1 to the love of this extremely clean, simple, classic comic book look. Maybe Dave can reduce his workload.
I think a pass on the hair would be good enough.
I like this look.
I wonder if Goon Squad actually requires some kind of mass that he can turn into his duplicates and those butter mints are simply something they figured they could buy in bulk for him to use.
Might even be a requirement for him to use many small items so he’s flexible as opposed to chunks of stone.
Enjoy your concert, it’s going to be epic
Brute Squad’s real name is of course, Andre
I understood that reference.
CaptainAmerica.jpg !
I understood that reference!
And if anything happens to his dad…
Oh Dear…
‘Allo. My name is Brute Squad. You killed my father. Prepare to die.’
Goon Squad’s sister’s name is “MiniMees” She creates thousands of miniature, green versions of herself…. thousands.
She tried variations of “Army Men” and “Plastic Soldiers” but just couldn’t find something appropriate for a superanym.
Maybe you should have Goon Squad’s Dad produce a few Rhino-sized and themed duplicates, that way you can call them “Crash Squad”, because a group of Rhino’s is called a Crash.
Maybe his sister can create Ninja Cat Burglar duplicates, which would allow her to be called Pride Squad (because of Lionesses and it sounds more innocent).
I’m sure we can come up with some more like these.
If I met a group calling themselves “Pride Squad”, lions would not be my go-to association. :>
Yes, I know there’s the whole Cheerleader thing which also seems appropriate for this.
Have fun at the concert.
Personally i think they speak more than sing., but that could be attributed to my music taste and the fact that they sing in german.
Rammstein is okay, but my favorite German band is The Heimatdamisch.
https://youtu.be/n_gtGfAail4
But did they escape with “wizard-guy” ?
Seems like they could not have, or that would have been first on the sitrep. They may, however, have replaced him with someone.
This style looks different for sure, but it’s cool too! Kinda gives me ‘manga in color’ vibes, which I don’t hate at all. I love how your style looks, but at the same time I wonder how the entire comic would look like if it was like this????
I like the simpler shaded look as well. Maxima could maybe use a bit more highlighting to remind she is not just a different color but also somewhat metallic, but she just got the sandpaper treatment so it might take a little while to get the shine back.
Except her face, because of the mask. That not being shiny is jarring enough for me to notice, and I usually don’t notice shading changes.
You could probably retcon her face being shaded differently as her wearing that choker she got for her birthday during the fight, and it got shorted out from all the sand.
↑This↑❗
I like this coloring a lot better, but it looks pixelated in some areas?
I actually love that look. Don’t get me wrong, your usual polished art style is great too, but this one just has a nice pop to it. Maybe experiment around with that a bit more.
did they do a full accountability check? Seems that the tk guy was after the good doctor.
It’s all good, Dave. Glad you’re getting to enjoy yourself and hope you have fun at the concert!
Arianna definitely seems shook up over the incident and it’s good to see her showing gratitude to Varia. Hopefully, it doesn’t cause her too much trouble in the future. And Max is seeing that her team really can keep themselves kept in her absence. That has to be soothing for a commander that her friends and troops aren’t going to drop just because she has to handle something on the otherside of the globe.
Without the finishing touches this looks like a guest artist work xD
Have fun DaveB ;)
Honestly, I kinda like the coloring and shading on this page. It looks very “comic-y” in a good way to me.
I like the coloration and shading, personally. Looks Comic-y in a good way.
While it is hard to judge from just one page, this style seems very nice.
Maybe there’s a way to switch between both? Like, this seems well suited for pages that aren’t meant to be visual spectacles that require special effect looking, magic-space-woobly-shiny stuff.
Less work (which might result in more output?) sounds like a win.
Honestly, the spectacular special effect magic-space-woolly stuff are one of the two places I want this style most, so that I can actually make out the details.
(The other place is with funny cartoon faces. Sydney’s cartoonishly distorted faces often looked vaguely creepy and off to me in the more “realistic” style.)
I like this shading too, and I have no worries about it being used to save time or simply aesthetic. It’s a good page.
Rammstein at the Coliseum? That was an amazing show.
Cute Squad – Goon Squad’s sister.
Mute Squad – Brother who produces duplicates that can’t talk.
Lute Squad – Duplicates come with their own musical instruments and will play them.
Rude Squad – Will say anything that comes to mind.
Transmute Squad – Turns other objects into duplicates (they revert when killed)
Commute Squad – Instead of duplicates, just teleports.
Commute squad- Actually a cousin, but his teleportation abilities can take any number of the duplicates to a spot as though they were a single individual. Can be used to produce an infinite clown’s out of a clown car scenario with out teleporting the original.
OR magic pockets. Anything a Duplicate shoves into a pocket can be pulled out of a pocket by another duplicate.
Their costume includes a jacket that’s really just a massive pocket big enough to shove people into.
Everyone who comes out of the pocket has a different, vague description of the hellish nature of the pocket Dimension.
Toot squad. Can only be summoned via excessive use of flatulence.
Scoot squad- Can move any object a few inches over at most.
Cute Squad duplicates into female Naruto clones.
Flower Squad creates duplicates of Limbs and body parts where they can see.
When the dangers over and you’ve had a chance to calm down that’s when you can really realize how much you need to freak out.
Honestly, I concentrate on the story and narrative. I didn’t notice the different artwork until after your comments.
Sister’s name is Gun Moll aka Shoot Squad. She cannot duplicate herself but she can duplicate any guns held by her partners. The copy-gun contains the same amount of ammo as the original when it was copied and will poof when it runs out.
I thought Ariana was in charge of financial logistics.
She’s also ARCHON’s primary lawyer, PR agent & chief marketing director.
Her marketing skills were indicated during that first initial interview with Sydney, in which she mentioned a line of toys & other products that were themed around ARCHON’s supers; she also saw this as a way to help keep & maintain the public with a positive veiwpoint. When ARC Swat was attacked at the restaurant, on of the employees asked if they could sue the villains for loss of work time & that idea got Arianna quite excited; “Yes you can! And I’m going to help you!”
Arianna wears many hats…
We’ve only met the one assistant so far but I’ll bet Ariana has a staff of her own. I don’t know how many supers ARC employs in total but you would want to minimize the amount of administrative BS that the supers have to mess with. I suspect that Ariana is actually a stand in for the group of people that would be doing the job IRL. Given the salaries implied there would be a CFO at the very least. Public relations, personnel management, property management and so on. DB can always roll out a fresh character as needed but the comic doesn’t seem to center on the bureaucracy so it’s more compact to represent all those people with Ariana.
She does indeed wear many hats.
Honestly, I strongly prefer this coloring approach. The simplicity works!
Hmmm
FLash Mob
Would she be a monthly vote incentive?
Nice.
Why not a Psionic type that’s multiple bodies with a single mind, but gets more intelligent the fewer bodies are involved, and less intelligent with more bodies?
Mob Mentality
Makes multiple copies of themselves, but none of them have clothes?
Creates floods of themselves, but only in desert wadis?
I think I might prefer this cell-shaded style TBH. Especially if it makes the process significantly easier for you!
I like this style, too, so if you ever wanna take it easier, feel free to drop a couple simpler pages in there, e.g. for flashbacks or dreams or people imagining how things could go or something.
Your art really has come quite a long way since the first page, but I already liked that old style as well. I prefer this to mainstream comic art by a large margin.
I noticed the new coloring, and I loved it right away. Bright and clear. I feel that the previous coloring was a bit unfit in my eyes. Fits better in my mind.
Don’t hate it … it actually reminds me of colorized manga … almost a cell shaded look … now that I look at it closely … actually quite like it. ^_^
Down the road, Varia should introduce Sydney to her cousin Strawberry(!!)
Imagine Varia doing this(and driving a car like that…!):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIw3nY0Xt3Y&t=17s
I really like the new colour scheme! It’s a lot easier on the eyes and I can see the facial expressions and body shapes a lot better.
Sounds like they got at least one live captive
Goon Squad reminds me of Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man of X-Men comics years ago. I’ve always found a power like that to be intriguing.
Harem is quite different but it’s mostly a difference in psychology/mentality, as she shares one mind among up to 5 bodies, whereas Madrox’s dupes (short-form for “duplicates”) are created with the same mind but point of view, perspective, & experience is distinctly separated from the original & other dupes; The different memories & experiences become re-integrated once returned back to the original. It’s not bad psychologically, but if Madrox’s dupes are active for long periods of time or become physically separated from the original, it’s proportionately more difficult for Madrox’s mind to re-integrate the memories & experiences as a whole, consistent, continuity; Effectively, a long-separated dupe gradually becomes its own person & personality. Over time, Madrox can even go insane from having different sets of conflicting memories, so he tended to favor keeping all of his dupes fairly close & focused mostly on a single goal.
I don’t know about Goon Squad but Harem has no more than 5 bodies (Madrox can produce a virtually unlimited number of dupes), always has only the one mind, & also seems to have something like a “compartmentalized mind” in that she has no trouble with trying to consolidate the experiences of a number of bodies; she’s always “of one mind” about everything she does.
addition there, Multiple Man’s duplicates when killed can’t be reintegrated after death and were found to be their own distinct souls in the after life.
I actually like the way it turned out. It might be cool to see a run of vote incentive pinups or have ‘Side vignettes’ done entirely in this style- Definitely keep it in the back pocket for emergencies at least.
“Oh is that what you want? Because that’s how you get ants!”
…. there’s no reason why Sterling Archer couldn’t be non-canonically related to Goon Squad’s family. After all, with all he survived (primarily his own rampaging alcoholism), he *must* be a Super and (thankfully) doesn’t realize it.
Another vote for this art style.
Reminds me of old TV cartoons. Clean and simple in a good way.
Another vote of the simplified style – less work for you and I think the results look great. Didn’t notice until your comment, went back and, yeah, absolutely no complaints. Feel free to keep it like this :)
Simpsons vibes from maxima
In her last panel I got more of a Muppetized vibe for the face
This art style would be perfectly fine for a new/different comic – and if I wasn’t used to the “better” style You do normally. It’s even more comic-y and if anyone else would do comic pages like this, I’d be like, “yay. That’s a perfect comic page“. But, You spoiled your readership with that “better” style, so I hope that You can go back to this page and “finish” it. :-)
Maybe the sister is the brains of the outfit and so is called Squad Leader. And when defeated her duplicates turn into tiny cardboard squares.
Unfortunately she is permanent copyright litigation with Avalon Hill
Guess military can’t use that term (that they were using first) any more
Considering that the title predates copyright law by a SIGNIFICANT margin…
Yeah. Wouldn’t end well for anyone trying to sue for infringement.
Such would not stop them from trying, of course, but any competent or sober judge would just laugh at them.
Which was the point :)
And finding a competent and sober judge is not as easy as one would think
