Grrl Power #1060 – Define “Trouble”
Four hours of flying and blasting is a pretty good workout for Max. It actually pushed her limits really hard at the time, and took her a few days to recover. Firing off about 900 energy blasts in that time frame really burned a lot of… superhero calories, or whatever they use. She had to eat a lot of Superion field afterwards. Or however that works. There are still plenty of mysteries left to solve.
Can Maxima get road rash? If she’s prioritizing flight and energy beams with her power pool and flying around in a 200 MPH sandstorm, then yeah. She can wind up not shiny for a few weeks. Also covered in little hair thin blue scabs for the first few days.
It really speaks to how distracted Max is that she’s just going to put “I trust you.” out there to Sydney. She does, honestly. Max knows Sydney isn’t going to intentionally cause an incident… probably. It’s just, when you’re in another country, and you are a weapon of mid-middle to lower-upper destruction, there are ways to get into a lot of trouble without meaning to real quick.
FYI:
Lower-Low Class Destruction is “You call that Destruction?”
Middle-Lower is “Woo Hoo! That Done Blowed Up Real Good Destruction”
Upper-Lower is “Oh Damn! Everybody Scatter Destruction”
Lower-Mid is “A Whole Lotta Destruction”
Middle-Mid is “A Heapin’ Helping of Destruction”
Upper-Mid is “Soooo, So Much Destruction”
Lower-Upper is “I’d Be Impressed if I Wasn’t So Horrified At All This Destruction”
Middle-Upper is “Despite My Horror, I am Super Impressed By All This Destruction”
Upper-Upper is “Mass Destruction”
I looked at Afghanistan on google world before drawing this page, and no joke, the country is like 90% sand and mountains. It’s like the western, tail end of the Himalayas. It’s like all low, sandy mountains, then one big blob of desert in the south. Really not an ideal place to fight a sand-based supervillain.
The June Vote Incentive is up! What’s that dripping down Sydney’s face? Uh… well, actually, clicking on the link won’t actually give it away necessarily, cause the thumbnail is from one of the, er, advanced pictures in the series, if you take my meaning. Yes, I mean there is a nude version of Sydney (and guest) over at the Patreon version.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like.
Well, Sydney’s going for the flyball so she can obviously get up there to do whatever it is she’s going to do. She can’t drop the shield obviously, but she can swap out the flyball safely ( Featherfall, bitches! ). PPO probably wouldn’t do much good, since the beam is not that wide.
Looks like Ætherium Causeway FTW.
I’m guessing Sydney will be using the Aetherium Causeway WITHOUT the safeties on like she was shown on Cora’s ship, maybe to a black hole or gravity well or something.
Or maybe fly her up with Parfait and make a wish and see what chaos happens.
That was my guess, too. Fracture Station, but in orbit. Or zoom- right into one of its… I don’t know what the things were spurting out blue fire.
While there is some setup for it to be to Fracture Station as Sydney’s ‘go to’ Causeway (plus the fact that it would open a new storyline of Fracture Station aliens discovering that Earth has the ability to make Aetherium Causeways, which could lead to that interstellar war that Cora was concerned about), the other idea that’s been foreshadowed is opening up a portal to some sort of gravity well or black hole, which was also alluded to by Altus earlier on in the comic.
Both are possible ideas for what Sydney might do, though it could be some third thing neither of us have thought of obviously.
Oh, that is a good idea too. I was just thinking she could isolate him from any Sand with the Shield.
Just maybe don’t go to Fracture station. Again.
That would definitely be another Diplomatic Incident.
Cora did hook her up with some other ‘choice’ stellar landmarks.

(panel 4)
And Altus did explain how to override the orbs’ natural safety features about ignoring gravity wells so it doesnt make her pop in on a black hole.

(Panel 1)
Yep, that definitely looks like a Chekhov’s gun, right down to the last panel saying Max would definitely disapprove.
Also, Deus is just going to just lurv seeing a gateway open up in the sky.
He’ll be all like “WHAT THE AKTOOAL FERK? I want one.”
Sydney’s orbs and actions have admittedly been one of the few things that Deus has not acted like he expected to know anything about.
He seemed surprised about the true-sight being able to see through so much stuff, for example.
He did not expect Sydney to have been on Fracture station.
The only other time he’s seemed to have been caught unaware about anything was when Maxima destroyed the Fel ship, giving the US access to alien tech (although it wound up being access via a trade with Cora instead of access to the Fel technology itself).
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-770-reactions-are-mixed/
(panel 5)
When did SmugD find out about the Tru Site? o_O
Or that Sydney has been to Fracture
He hasn’t.
Harem may have told him some things, but nothing has been stated or hinted at in the comic as far as I have seen.
Yes. He has.
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-130-singularly-skilled-double-agent-quint/
Harem literally told him about Truesight and exactly what it was able to do.
I’ll quote the comic, panels 1, 2, and 3.
Deus: “Truesight?”
Harem: “Yep, it saw through Dabbler’s Glamour like it was nothing.”
Deus: “That’s… impressive. Succubi glamours are no joke.”
Vale: “Is that a fact, sir?”
Vale: “Too bad virtually no one on this planet is an illusionist.”
Deus: “Don’t be so pessimistic, Vale. I’m sure in her line of work, she’ll eventually meet most of them.”
What I find particularly interesting about that conversation is that it suggests that Vale doesn’t know much about Succubi, which I would kind of expect her to if she’s some kind of eldritch being, rather than a super or other, more mundane alien.
been a while I forgot about that conversation.
Still, pretty sure he doesn’t know she makes trips to Fracture Station (nothing stated anyway).
He did not know about that when he was ON Fracture Station, but he very likely knows about it by now.
Sydney literally went there and brought back Grakz for Neil DeGrasse Tyson and the Grakz was shown on everyone who video’ed it. Plus Sydney’s visit to Fracture Station was video’ed not only by all manner of alien species, but also showed up in search terms which allowed Cora to find Sydney in the first place. Deus seems to have an uncanny knowledge about alien civilizations – not the least of which was that he had ALREADY made arrangements with the alien he bought the Mass Fabs from to know what he would need to give in trade. He’s also had sex with more than a few aliens if his black book is any indication. Vehemence also knows, and if Deus knows anything about where they’re keeping Vehemence (which he does since he knew where they were keeping Opal when he requested her release into his custody), he could find out second-hand that way. And lastly, it’s very likely that if he did not know from all that already, Harem would have probably let it slip. Deus just tends to know things that people would normally not know, and his explanation tends to be that he has the resources (and sheer intelligence) to find out that sort of stuff.
@Pander
while that is very possible, and likely, and given Deus also looking at the Orbs when Dabbler and Sidney did as a confirmation that the same maker of them may have made the Superion field, I much prefer a direct statement of knowledge from the characters themselves, even if just a flash back of Harem saying something and Vale or Deus going “oooh, an Aethereum Causeway, we better keep an eye on her” or something.
its like how we have word of god from Slayers that Amelia is Naga’s little sister and a few teaser moments in games and such; but what we really need is a moment in a manga or anime with the characters together, and directly stating this *mostly because I really want a Lina Inverse freakout that Naga is a princess*;
it never happened, we know this is a fact, but scenes like this should be made to be enjoyed.
Yes. He has.

Not sure how much more stated it can be that he knows about Truesight than him saying “Truesight?” And Harem describing exactly how it was able to see through even Succubi glamours.
He found out about the truesight function VERY early on, from Harem.

(Panels 1, 2, and 3)
Oh also, while he doesn’t have an Aetherium Causeway of his very own, Deus does have a Stargate :)
Do you really want to see what a Sydney looks like with half her flesh flayed down to the marrow?
That’s what you will get if she traps Haboob inside Mr Buble with her!
I she traps Darude in her shield and the flys in a tight circle at mach 2. Darude will just be smooshed on the shield wall, unconcious at 6 g then take him over the ocean.
Do you want to take the risk he can’t do serious damage to Sydney first?
Fairly sure the protection from g-forces applies to everyone inside
we have seen nothing to suggest others inside the shield are anymore affected my G-force than she is that I can remember.
All these suggestions of trapping him in with her all have the very big risk…too big of a risk..of potentially trapping her with a living sand blaster ready to strip her flesh off her bones.
typically when you gamble you aim for higher odds with le4ss chance of being trapped inside a blender as a potential outcome.
I’m personally hoping that she’s planning a “fly into the storm and make out with Parfait” succubus mind whammy.
It’s boobs all the way down the Darude!
Sydney is straight, so no luck.
Irrelevant when a succubus is involved. Afterward might be awkward & filled with regret, but a succubus aura dialed up to an 8 or 9-ish probably makes everything seem like a Good Idea.
even the normal walking around aura + glamor.
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-101-what-else-would-you-do-with-two-invisible-arms/
and might i suggest its time for a quick snack?

She does have that ‘air making’ orb. If that can make other stuff, like water, she could rain the sand out of the sky.
Forming another aetherium causeway could cause more aliens to show up… more aggressive aliens… The giant squidwards maybe.
Maxima: “Sydney, I told you not to cause an incident.”
Sydney: “You said an international incident, and I didn’t, this is an INTERSTELLAR incident.”
Maxima: *facepalm*
It seems implied from last time with the sparring with Vehemence that Sidney has been casually using her Aethereum causeway enough times to vist Fracture station that they are now on the look out for it.
and they don’t know if it will attract anything. Also of note the Squidwards were after the Alari originally, no word on if they were a Builder type species and just *removing the local wildlife* before terraforming the planet the way they want. Or if the Alari did something that drew their attention to attack them. We don’t have any information on the back story here (and Deus should given he took in refugees, should be asking what they are running from).
what we do know is the things that might be battle mechs (we don’t know if the kaiju sized things were the actual aliens or their version of Sentinel robots or something. Lambde did say something about war mechs so that could be what we saw just a model Dabbler wasn’t familiar with). and that whatever they are their left behind drone sent off an alert *with a very panic like response* when it detected Sidney’s orbs in action.
Honestly at this point I’d be more worried about Astral, Sub-space, or extra dimensional entities keying in on that causeway opening up so frequently around the same planet and draw the more curious of them, maybe Aethereum space life forms, to Earth.
You’re forgetting something… The Squidwards’ encounter with Sydney was likely an excessively expensive one, and one that they’re probably still sitting their butts in the creek after (I hope that idiom makes sense). It all ended with her creating the aetherium causeway, so it’s likely they’re on the look out for it and since they seem to know what the orbs are, if they detect it they just might have the ability to trace the origin and find Earth.
Aethereum causeways are also made by capital ships (so likely high end Xevoarchy members like the tier 2 civilizations and heads of the Xevoarchy),
next is the Aethereum causeway can’t be detected after it closes, and its destination only detectable while its open.
the Squidwards were attacking Alari, they were not after Sidney and only reacted to her presence and may be in a mindset that they chased her off the world they were after. Which they effectivly did, and only lost a few thousand tiny ships and 2 of their mecha kaiju, given they were using a continent sized ship this is unlikely to have been a major dent to something able to eradicate the Alari homeworld.
if anything the only Aethereum causeway they would have detected would have been the one Sidney used to go to Fracutre. So if they were going after her, their most likely destination would have been Fracture station.
no reason to assume they can actively scan the entire galaxy for any and all Aethereum causeways.
-that said we don’t know if they only wanted the Alari world or are after all the Alari, if so them going to Earth would most likely be because of the Alari refugees in Galtyn.
one little point not a lot of people mention but the squidwards where able to detect the orbs, that is something that not even dabler seems able to do and the xevoarchy can only detect the etherium causeways, whatever the fuck the squidwards are they seem even more advanced than the xevoarchy
I think she’s taking Parfait with her maybe she’s going to ask her for something like unlimited snow or heavy rain something to soak down the sand and make it too heavy to move. Then if that guy doesn’t return to his human form maybe Sydney and Max can melt the sand into glass.
or she’s taking Parfait with her because she’s already in the bubble and its raining hot glass and sand outside it so inside the bubble is the safest and most reasonable place to let her stay.
She’s gonna put the eye on him!
Or put him on ‘The List’
maybe she’ll just swear at him ’til he’s blue away….
It’s amazing what a wormhole to the other end of space… or even the Altari (?) homeworld could achieve here if aimed right.
I mean, the vacuum of space would basically be like aiming a giant wormhole shaped vacuum hose at the guy and drag him well out of the problem area. Right?
She does not to send the other end to another star system. Just open the other end to the moon. Sure, lots of sharp pointy sand, but no air, so no wind. Also, no oxygen for him to breathe. That should shut him down quickly.
I mean, you are assuming that he still needs to breathe when he’s in the form of literally just sentient sand.
We’ve seen her open an aetherium causeway in atmosphere to a point in space at least twice without any indication of vacuum on the starting end. I don’t think the thing allows the environment on one side to affect the environment on the other.
True, that may be one of the safety features. Which may be about to be disabled.
Can she glassify the dude?
I believe the term is “vitrify” and maybe given enough time she could, but it would cause an international incident to vitrify another country’s landscape…
This time Max isn’t fighting alone. There should be a sizeable group of sand kinetics that can help her, or at least hinder/distract Darude
also another being roughly at her level or at least close enough, sydney is pretty powerful herself
Syd’s reaching for her flight ball. I’m thinking she’s about to open a portal to The Fracture, and suck Darude through it. He may not need to breathe when he’s sand, but I’m pretty sure he still needs large amounts of sand to exist in vacuum, so closing the Aetherium Gateway will stun or kill him.
So Flight and Force field orb? this is gonna suck. Or rather…Sydney is.
C’mere Pewpew!
We need to make a LOT of glass REALLY fast!
“Your @$$ is glass and Max is the Shatterer!”
This looks like a job for mystery orb!
The punchline is very funny but might have worked better if Maxima had said “just don’t set off an international diplomatic incident” instead of “just don’t set off an international incident.” :)
PS – what is Parfait holding in her hand in the first panel?
Her SmartDisk. She’s taking a video.
Not sure, not one of halo’s orbs though. First hint to my eye is not big enough second not shiny. But I am never right and if I am you are obviously mistaken. I was not right.
if you think about it, that’s a superpower.
If you are *never* right then you are omnipotent. Just assert things the opposite of what you want — “I do not have Maxima’s energy blasts”, “Rocko’s Mustache is not going to win the Kentucky Derby this year”, “one hour from now, there will be at least one person on Earth who is suffering from disease.”
That would be amazing.
“If you are *never* right then you are omnipotent. Just assert things the opposite of what you want”
Also known as the George Castanza method of success.
https://youtu.be/CizwH_T7pjg?t=65
Not even…that level of sucess. Not only that my luck is so bad I quit RPG’s when I tried to roll my stats and consistently got 3’s on everything, even with a change of dice. I could fall over in Scrooge McDuck’s vault and find the only 2 week old chicken salad sandwich.
most likely a recording device, which will be uploaded to spacehub (because succubus) before spacetube, for all of the galaxy to see.
Umm. Not able to check on PC atm. But mobile seems to be messing with comments. Not sure if it’s just me but it shows there are comments, I made one before, but when I click comments, there’s none and it switches to saying “0 comments”
Normal operation is not normal.
The comments will appear eventually.
Comments occasionally will not appear for a couple of hours after clicking Post Comment. They eventually pop up.
Yeah, kinda normal for my own comments to not show for a little bit. But it would say between 1 and 3 comments. Then when I’d click the button it’s switch to 0 comments and show… no comments from anyone. And several comments were made before mine but still showed as 1-3 lol. Weird. Funny how I made a comment about glass at the same time as someone else XD
“Come see our next show. There’s a starship in it!”
Idea for the plan:
1. Turn the sand below Darudes feet to glass with the PPO or otherwise unuseable with Parfaits magic
2. Use the shield to walk up to Darude
3. Cover Sydney, Darude and Parfait in the Shield*
4. Punch out Darude, because he now has basically no power without sand.
“Isolation from Powersource” worked with Vehemence after all.
*Alternatively, replace Parfait with or add Max to this group
You forget that Darude is still a militant super, and that Sydney is still a pasty nerd despite Archon’s best efforts. Even without sand, he could probably kill her. I have no idea about Parfait tho, so anything could go.
Bubbling him cuts him off from “reinforcement” – but the sand he currently is is still there, and he can still use that to fight Sydney, who is very squishy without her bubble.
Now… Would Sydney be able to use her wormhole as a giant vacuum cleaner?
She should really ask Cora to take her somewhere in our solar system to make a bookmark that’s …. less next to a giant space station full of Officious Officials. With guns.
Throw him into the Sun!
Cora hooked her up with some other stellar locations.
Not entirely sure about that…
As far as my ailing memory tells me, Syd was *offered* a choice bit of locations on the ship, but that was actually veto’d by Cora as …Unwise/premature.
If she has more bookmarks now, it also makes absolutely no sense at all to dump Vehemence right next to Avoid-Attention-Of-Interstellar-Busybodies-At-All-Costs Central if she had any other choice.
That little bit of vacuum cooldown could just as well have been done around, say, Jupiter for the purty picture/background if she had it available.
After all, that was a deliberate planned action –> Max was involved –> She *checks* these things…
Mind… Could be that Cora threw a tiff on the Vehemence stunt and did provide some choice coordinates in the gap between that arc and this one, but afaik up until now any use of the Aetherium causeway would dump whatever right next to a set of armed officious officials of an intergalactic bend in a way that screams ANOMALY!!..
Nope. It was Cora’s suggestion in the first place. Sydney said that Max probably would disapprove, so they should do it. I believe that’s the last we hear of it, either way.
Agreed. Although the mention of Jupiter brings my train of thought back to how badly NASA is going to be pushing for Halo to start affordable delivery of rovers to other planets.
It would shave billions off the cost of a launch, save months of flight time, drastically reduce the risk, and significantly lower the design requirements of the rover itself since it just has to drive and communicate now, not survive launch and landing forces. And once a few proving missions were done, they could start manned missions after ferrying a couple habitats into place.
For upper-upper , don’t you mean ‘Max Destruction’?
I think Middle-Lower was the infamous ‘mosque incident’ mentioned early on in #113.
Sydney, please remember to let Parfait out before you go do superhero stuff.
No where safer than in Mr. Bubble! Besides I suspect Parfait will have a hand in her plan.
Sydney really should have a special glove with velcro straps for holding the force field orb.
Especially for those instances where losing protection would cause instant death.
(She taped it down once.)
Except she’s already said gloves/mittens were her kryptonite, as shown in this comic:
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-98-triple-facepalm-and-sidebutt/
I said ‘special’ gloves.
A hole for the palm but covered fingers and criss crossing velcro straps.
What she really needs is a tandem flesh-to-flesh harness for teaming up with Varia so she can shield, fly and shoot
Holy cow. Darude had every possible advantage in Afghanistan, and he still had to withdraw after fighting Maxima non-stop for four hours. That’s mighty impressive for Max.
Plus apparently Max did not have a mask to protect her mouth and nose and ears, unlike now, judging from all that coughing afterwards (and possibly hospitalization if that’s around the time she met Peggy).
do you see how maxima left the landscape after their fight? it seems like a nuclear test site after detonating a couple thousand nukes in quick succession
“There has been a good destruction.”
Sydney doesn’t need to resort to using the aetherium causeway. She can just embiggen the shield and then just plow through him attach 16 over and over again. Her flight is inertialess so she can stop and reverse course on a dime. She could scatter him pretty much effortlessly.
Possible duplicate. Sydney doesn’t need to use an aetherium causeway. All she needs to do is embiggen the shield and the fly through at Mach 16 to scatter the sand. Her flight is inertialess so she can stop and turn on a dime. Mach 16 with a big shield like that is going to carry a lot of kinetic energy. The shield can take a direct nuke so it can hold up to multiple kinetic strikes.
Or fire her dakka orb at the ground below him. But explosive solutions to problems can cause collatteral damage.
making it rain hot glass is worse than the sand and Maxima “leading him away” seems to not be her focus as she isn’t flying away to make him give chase but constantly blasting him above everyone.
So might as well just rip the bandage off and see if the PPO can end this quicker.
also of not to Crim the cold, her shield deflect energy, it may not even build up friction when it flies. We saw her racing nuke blasts before and not igniting any atmosphere around her.
Her PPO or an Aethereum causeway to some empty part of space would be her best bets…granted the later could come back as *with his powers he has merged with space dust, forming it around him to survice and become Darude the living sand planet…but much smaller*.
Her shield doesn’t need to carry any energy with it, it just needs to let her impact him at mach 3. with a building sized shield.
In other words scattering no more of him than the parts of his sand going around and tearing up buildings on the ground. It’s convoluted plan that will likely do nothing to a particulated opponent who can form into something as fine as sand and cover such a wide area. It would be far simpler for her to either blast him or space him…or if she can be precise just scoop him up and drop him in the middle of the ocean. Instead of back and forth in a bubble, back and forth with a scoop (assuming she can move her portal around with her) or if it can activate a suction function
i wonder what would happen if it rained
Just fire PPO directly up to create an updraft and blow most of the sand into the stratosphere
i forget and am lazy.
but is she holding onto her shield orb?. or is it floating there with the others.
She has seven orbs, only six are floating above her head (5 in the last panel). Also, you can see the forcefield orb in her hand in the first panel.
First panel says yes.
She’s probably got something more clever in mind, but given the energy bolts she was throwing around when she was solo-leveling against alien kaiju and whole swarms of lesser baddies, just blowing the entire volume of sand Darude is using into vapor doesn’t seem beyond Syd’s abilities at all. Max may have her topped on raw single target damage, but she’s apparently better at rapid fire and AoE attacks.
im sure that between maxima and sydney they could blow darude into smitherens, the problem is the rest of the country would also get obliterated
Well, im officially caught up on the comic. I absolutely love the characters and story and cant wait for more. ^.^
Can we take a moment to just go ‘awwww” about Parfait holding her hair in the next to last panel?
How much sand is there in Afghanistan? Isn’t the landscape there mostly mountains and rock deserts? (Oh wait, I looked it up, the southern parts of the Kandahar, Helmand and Tamruz regions have the sand desert of Rigestan)
Buuuut how much sand can there realistically be in a country that is located between Malawi and Mozambique? There’s no desert around there, not even a rock desert.
Anyway, if Sydney’s plan involves creating glass, that also constitutes mass destruction.
That’s kinda the point Maxi was making: what ever sand he is using, he brought with him
Super-calories? In days of old, Super Mouse at Super Cheese. He made it from Super Milk, which he got from a Super Cow. (Terrytoons also introduced a Supermouse at the same time, but retroactively renamed him Mighty Mouse to avoid confusing interactions. No relation.) And Captain Carrot got (and gets) his powers by eating a cosmic carrot.
Some research into Earth-C might reveal the source of the Superion field.
Also Atomic Mouse, who used Plutonium pills.
6th panel… am I the only one who sees Max cutting a “Majin Buu” ‘M’ in the Darude cloud?
And since I brought up DBZ… I want to buy Sydney’s ice cream Krillin shirt on the vote incentive site…
The first panel shows both glass and lava everywhere but if Sydney and Parfait can do something like cover Darude with say ice cream? it’s sticky enough to trap the loose sand and if Darude doesn’t return to human for then he’ll be stuck and easier to melt without huge amounts of damage. Although the area might have a funky smell after a few days not to mention the flys…. Fire hoses!
I like the Causeway idea but she might be thinking True Sight, find his weakspot.
Drawing a blank on what Sidney might do, but this situation + carte blanche + that look on her face? There’s my cue to round up ALL the popcorn. This gonna be good.
You know, I’d really love it if some sort of Sydney type mishap transferred Parfait’s bond to her. Making her the master of a sex-demon.
Saw a lot of guesses based on Flyball go for Fracture station. But consider Flyball and Force Field Orb together. Embiggen enough to get a nice BIG surface area and then FLY at her new max speed up through Daruda. Things hitting the shield tend to get caught in the surface for a bit at that setting (see the Max test range bit). Taking it outside of Earth’s atmosphere means no ‘country’ is involved for ‘international’ incident. She might end up raising the price of sand, but that is more Daruda’s fault than hers.
Okay, so Deus definitely knew this was coming, and that’s definitely why he wanted Maxima and her supers here. This is probably an attempt to stop all of Deus’s conquering, and now the US is going to be seen as having defended Deus’s fledgling empire.
I honestly did not think of that, but now considering Deus’ recently relieved super intelligence powers, he really could have planned this.
@DaveB Any chance that you could get someone to fix the comments on this site? It takes hours or days for them to actually post; it’s barely worth commenting. It’s been like this for years and it’s ridiculous. I don’t know who’s doing your hosting but you should ask them to deal with it.
Afghanistan is not an ideal place to fight anybody. Just ask the US, Russia, England…
What is that purple stuff in the background of the flashback scene? Is it glass?
Also. Sydney. I know what you’re thinking. And that is a very bad idea. Maybe.
a very special kind of glass that takes intense heat and pressure. We’ve seen Maxima make some before when firing at Sidney on a practice grounds before the test conference.
Usually in nature you only see this formed from meteor impacts or some very intense lightning strikes,
that said the color is rare and may in part be an aspect of the particular energy she is firing (it doesn’t behave like regular plasma or electric based. She may like Cyclops and other energy manipulators be firing extra dimensional energy.
Glass or crystal of some kind, created by her energy blasts melting or otherwise interacting with the ground. We saw a tiny sample of it at the shooting range after Max tested Sydney’s shield.
Note also the molten lava stream in the background in the Afghanistan image.
That would be forms of fulgurite, color decided by what is actually fusing.
Probably amethyst, which is just silica (silicon dioxide) which has been irradiated and/or has trace impurities of iron or other materials. Sand mostly silica (quartz) already, so high heat fusing sand and irradiating it could hypothetically produce amethyst (which is basically just purple colored quartz), though admittedly it’s pretty unlikely in the real world. If you’ve ever seen a geode with the purple crystals inside of it, those are an example of amethyst crystals.
And no, those wouldn’t be fulgurites, as fulgurites are quite fragile, hollow, branching structures made of sand which has been struck by lightning, usually within the white/beige/gray color range. I couldn’t find any examples of actual purple fulgurites, much less ones that looked like solid purple crystals.
But then again, who knows? It’s a comic. It could be anything. :-P
Ah, right, can’t be fulgurite, because wasn’t made by LIGHTNING. I stand corrected. Kinda doubt it’s amethyst, probably just colored glass. Although what melted purple is gonna be interesting. I bet it all got dug up and sold by the locals after she left, however.
Amethyst basically is colored glass, since glass is mostly silica, it just tends to form naturally and is not as clear as manufactured glass. That said, calling it an “amethyst-like crystal” would probably be more accurate, but the reason for the purple coloration could be very similar.
