Grrl Power #102 – Dabbler’s gunnin’ for KP
The marketer in me thinks maybe it’s a bit of a missed opportunity that I didn’t make the orbs more distinct. As a group of seven shown in color, they’re identifiable, but they do lack a certain uniqueness like for instance a Dragon Ball. I could slip one of those on to a page somewhere and people would immediately know what it was. If these orbs were to cameo in another comic, it’d would be more difficult to recognize them at a glance, but oh well. Maybe the one with the pseudopod in it would work. On the other hand I don’t want to overthink stuff, else it might get that corporate designed by committee stink on it. (Yes but do orbs make good toy tie ins? Let’s make them lego pieces instead since we already have a relationship with Lego Corp.)
Pushing Maxima’s buttons isn’t a challenge, I think Dabbler is just an adrenaline junkie.
The green orb is supposed to say “PROPERTY OF GALLAXHAR” but it’s way too small to be legible. :P
Well since everyone and their grandma knows by now that the 6th Deus Ex Sphera is going to be some sort of deception-thwarting super-detective, like batman in sphere form without the utility belt, I can see two possible outcomes for the 7th orb: Either nothing will come of it during this meeting, and its unknown powers can be saved for pulling a hat out of a rabbit later, or it’s a general-functions orb that is responsible for hiding the orbs from all forms of supernatural interrogation.
I’m betting on Immortality or super healing. I’m sure these orbs wouldn’t want their user to die needlessly.
so we’ve got… lets see. Pokeball, Faberge egg, ORT, happy-kitty-face, and… property of Gallaxhar (I think?)
Which covers a few of the idea’s proposed before we knew anything about the orbs – is that intentional, or just a fun coincidence?
Max: Have trouble performing Dabbler?
Dab: Shutup!
I’m guessing one orb stops people detecting their function, maybe the other makes the orbs (but not Sydney) invisible and intangible, which she only finds out sometime later, much to her annoyance.
Faulk: SHUT IT!!
Recall the previous attempt at scanning them in Sydney’s container? “More empty than empty.” I wonder if one would get the same kind of readings from conventional EM scanning from standard equipment. Maybe even an Electron Microscope wouldn’t work either.
Well these were designed by beings who probably have centuries or longer, maybe even a Type I civilization just passing through and one of their number lost a simple convenience kit. Maybe even do dimensional hopping too. I would expect one of them to be a diagnostic and healing medical based orb.
Nah – they are the high-tech-magica equivalent of a set of family traveling games – like pocket Simon – Miles Bournes – Scrabble – Concentration – Checkers – Yahtzee …. etc etc …. kids toys really … nothing dangerous about them at all [eye roll]
Like the unstoppable mimic-weapon on Ben 10 that turned out to be a toy for an infant from a race of 12th dimensonal beings whose childhood is longer then most geological epochs?
I always dislike when they do the whole bit where they are still children but they are some insane age. It may be a bit biased but also didn’t care for Gwyn’s mana power reacting to the device, but not everyone ascribes the reason for science and magic to not work together being because magic as a multi-dimensional force disrupts the multi-dimensional pathways of electricity and magnetic fields, and thus only electromagnetic/electric based technology would be affected and not magi-tech/dimensional technology.
but I did find it funny that the device was a just a toy, a shape shifting reactive toy. Looked fun.
I always preferred Puck’s explanation from Gargoyles; “Energy is energy. Whether from magic or technology.:
Sure as the output, I was thinking along the lines of the ignition. But yeah, that was a good like/episode. Shame the quantum energy net thing didn’t compensate for mirror travel. Although it can be said there is a definite difference in dealing with fire, electricity, and lasers. Energy is merely intensity, the medium can make a big difference on the situation.
I am thinking that whoever owned the orbs made em to be unscanable, perhaps the person who previously owned em was a very very VERY powerful mage or something. Although to be unscanable to Dab it would mean that they are beyond her ability to understand and such.
Just because she can’t scan them doesn’t mean she wouldn’t understand their construct if she saw a manual for them.
Just like how I can understand how an optical cloak works, but that wouldn’t mean I could see through it with out the proper equipment.
Not what I meant dude, I mean if she can’t even get a scan of em they must of belonged to someone more powerful then any of em put together.
I never understood that reasoning, we are not gods, we can build things stronger than ourselves. We can build tanks, bombs, optical cloaking, helicopters, hell I personally can build an electrical generator from stuff around the house.
A chimpanzee can not build any of these things, yet pretty sure one would beat the living hell out of me if we got in a fight.
Unless you willed it into existence or used your own mana to power it, your “power” doesn’t figure into it; just your intellegence and the technology/alchemical skills/sorcery arts available to you. You can create magic items with out using your own internal power to power them, in fact its more common not to.
Heck even power doesn’t figure so much into cloaking, all you need is the reverse wave or the ability to adapt in order to produce a reverse wave function to what ever is trying to scan it; magic has its own rules, nothing says you can’t have an item produce a reverse wave to a mystical scan thus creating a field of nothing present (as the wave is cancelled on contact it can’t send back data, thus *nothingness*).
So intellegence or physical/spiritual power don’t really figure into being greater or weaker than someone to create a tool (its actually why tools are created, to perform functions we can’t do on our own).
Ha! and Maxima complains about Dabbler being distracting? She walks around with 38DD’s and no bra!
Dabbler walks around with 36DDs, no bra, and incredibly revealing clothing.
Besides, depending on how Maxima’s tactile TK works, she might not “bounce” at all.
Looks like Dave REALLY needs to take a realistic boob drawing course, since people are commenting on it on every page…
Hmm, Better Boobs for Comics down at the local Community College?
been there done that not all that impressed with that particular class. 1st off, i think it was mentioned in a previous thread about various tutorials Dave could use. 2nd, nothing beats a good life drawing tool when you just can’t get people to sit still like this one –>https://www.pixelovely.com/gesture/figuredrawing.php
Lastly, although it’s a bit crass to say at the moment but boob movement and the shape of a breast in a costume while moving find a burlesque show or a really good video of a burlesque show.
Okay one more thing before i sign off, i’m impressed with Dave’s work and more than likely will continue being impressed/inspired by what he is doing. Even more so as he improves his technique and maintains his level of consistency with each page.
DaveB + webcomic = Good Things to be scene.
I agree in full, good Sir.
Actually, so far I don’t think there’s been any complaining about boobs in this page, just people commenting on their presence and their delight regarding said presence. In fact I’d say it’s gotten even better within a short period of time which means he likely put a considerable deal of effort into it. Out of respect we should all take the time to more closely observe them . . . Okay it’s a thinly veiled excuse to stare at boobs, but seriously there’s really no problems with them on this page nor on most other pages, the issue with Dabbler was most likely because he was trying something new and most of those issues seem to be pretty much corrected. I say give the guy a break.
Yeah, my message came out wrong, I apologise… it really was more of a “ok people enough comments on the anatomically imperfect breasts” (even though technically those two weren’t, another apology) than a “OMG Dave ur anatomy sux!” thing.
It’s just… it started a while ago and I said something myself too, now I was just amused at the thing going on.
Sorry if I offended. :)
I thought the boobs were fairly under control on this page… though the comments about buoyancy are making me reconsider some pencil work for the next page. Hmm…
Sure Dabbler’s phantom mammaries are held tightly in their cups. And to show them pressing against Sydney’s shield you did not. And it would have been more difficult first visualizing them then actually rendering them. I don’t think they would have been able to press the flesh even if they were real.
DaveB should ask his wife to show him what it looks like in real life.
For the sake of the art “of course”
my mrs. can but won’t. something about equality in characterization. if she can’t get a guy to do it she won’t either, which eventually leads to “honey, you know i can’t fill out your bra….”
Well Maxima has that skin tense thing right? Its like does Emma Frost’s boobs flop around when she turns diamond? (although realistically she shouldn’t have anymovement in such a state due to a loss elasticity in the skin around her arms and legs as unlike robots our joints are bound by tissue including the fat and skin. So a fiber diamond (threaded diamond filament tissue going down to the cellular level) would be needed to retain the strength (in fact be stronger than normal diamonds) and also retain the elasticity.
(I thought of this long and hard to come up with a carbon based exoskeleton for giant arthropods that could both hold that size with out needing to be too thick, allow movement, and have that famous high defense stats they have; and explain the strength of dragon scales).
Sydney’s in her bubble in panel three, right? It LOOKS that way, but I couldn’t recall if that was the shield orb. Though the odd coloring on Dabbler’s bust makes me think Syd’s in her bubble and Dab’s pressed against it.
This all just gets better and better! xD
I believe one of them just blew a raspberry at Dabbler!
That’s a kitty face with whiskers.
OK, two small reveals about Maxima.
As someone else pointed out, Max is not wearing a bra. Why would she, except to keep her assets from flapping all over the place in a fight? What is the petty force of gravity against Maxima’s invulnerability?
The other: Max has pointed ears.
We know Maxima was once merely human. Magical/faery origin? Given the details: gold skin, naturally ruby-red lips, naturally long, elegant red fingernails, and now the ears, she could have gotten a gift from faery or perhaps from someone like Gunnercrigg Court’s Coyote. Or she’s this universe’s Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged.
…& a 3rd detail…
…Based on the left-handed punch in Panel#1, I’m guessing that Max is a Southpaw.
Or she is using her lefty to pull her punch a little. if she used her right i dont think there would be much dabbler left
Except, pages 316 and 320 show her as a right-handed shooter
Even though DaveB already answered this question, I have a comment: what hand is dominant does not always match which eye is dominant. For precision shooting (rifle, target pistol), you shoot on whichever side is eye-dominant. For less precise work or where speed is more important (shotgun, combat pistol, automatic weapons), you tend to stick to your dominant hand. Which is a long-winded way of saying that which hand she shoots with doesn’t mean anything.
Max could be ambidexterous.
Or maybe it’s simply that she was in a better position to hit with her left than her right at that point. Having proper combat training means that you wouldn’t just lead with your right every time.
Yeah she’s right handed, she was trying to knock out her shields with a left jab so she could follow in with her right. And also pull her punch a little bit. She’s mad but she knows the sort of collateral damage her “unfettered might” can do.
I stand corrected, Good Sir!
:)
i see trickster catface on dabb in panel 2
i can just hear her snickering and trying not to laugh to hard wile strategically placing newgirl inbetween her and the pitbull-ish maxima.brigns a new meaning to the term “bodyshield”
Panel 3 you mean – and yeah, saw that too.
What I really noticed about panel 3, and 4, is that the orbs are now different sizes to show that they are closer or farther to the viewer.
Nice touch Dave.
Sydney looks a little annoyed about Dabbler hiding behind her and her shield. She already knows it can stand up to Maxima’s punches, but that doesn’t mean she appreciates being caught in the middle of this.
On the other hand, since Dabbler’s arrival, Sydney hasn’t said a word, which Arianna may take as a blessing.
Maybe one of the two remaining orbs is for data storage and very limited time-travel. Basically, each time it’s activated it travels back in time creates itself and the other orbs with all required information to ensure it can deflect all the scans that will subsequently be attempted.
Excellent comic, loving Arriana’s possessiveness about the ballroom. Strangely, it’s made her become my favourite character for the moment…
Is that a Madoka style Soul Gem?
First panel me: “ooh proper superhero action!” but I’m happy it stopped there, “operation let’s get this story moving” still running I see.
Also, I love Sydney’s non-plussed shield raising there.
It Dabbler pressed up against Syd’s shield? Or is she just standing behind Syd and holding her own shield close? It looks like it could be either one there.
The pointed ears may just be part of the mutant package. Not sure they have a definite function.
I note that Dabbler’s shield cracked under Maxima’s punch, and then she gets behind Syd’s shield. Grinning but shaken, it seems. :)
And is it just me, or does Dabbler’s guise look a hell of a lot like Kate Upton? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcJScBLIEX4
No, that was the window, merely collateral damage. Dabbler’s shield seemed to be fully effective. I expect she’s just “hiding” behind Sydney just to annoy Maxima further.
No man she doesn’t look like Upton. Not sweet enough
Loving Dabbler’s cat face in panel 3 while hiding behind Sydney’s forcefield. A nice touch :3
Interesting observation: The two “unknown” orbs DO appear to have “orbitals”, but only when Sydney is holding them. Check out comic #90, panel 3 for proof!
Actually they all do, I just haven’t drawn most of them close up enough while in use that you can see the symbols. I should probably go back and review the pages to see if there’s any place I should have drawn them in.
At first, I thought that green ball said “Property of Galactus” but I could not think of anything that he had that could be put in a ball like that.
The Galactus Seed is something he could want stored away.
…yeah, there’s no command problems here.
Elite unit – check
Not all from military training – check
Civillians under military commander – check
Actually reminds me of Stargate SG-1, except that Jack couldn’t just shoot Daniel every time he got annoyed…
I’ll add to the Dave chain here…
Stargate SG-1 is basically my favorite sci-fi show and I had just finished rewatching it since I was introducing the wife to it. Basically most everything I know about the military comes from that show, which is to say I know really almost nothing, but I’ve definitely learned more since starting the comic. (Of course, I haven’t found the time to update the cast page, which lists Dabbler as… I don’t know what that star+bar means anymore but I’ve decided she makes much more sense if she was a civilian specialist.
Commander- who IS from military background- losing her shit and trying to deck/murder (depending in how much of an idea of her own strength you’re willing to grant her) a subordinate, in front of civvies and her own C.O.- CHECK.
Sorry, but even the SOE wouldn’t have tolerated that.
She wasn’t gonna murder Dabbler (Partly because I’m not sure that Max actually CAN). Maybe scare her if Max managed to shatter her shield…
I dunno, Dave…maybe the orbs change in appearance once they’re all mastered, and Syd still hasn’t even figured out what two of em do yet. This could be their default “asleep/Half Awake” form…
Bet you Maxima’s gonna be pleased when Dabbler fails at getting anything out of those orbs. One order of humble pie coming up.
Perhaps it’s not best to talk about eating pie around Dabbler.
Only if it’s cherry.
oh great now that damn song is stuck in my head thanks for that
You’re welcome.
well, at least it’s Cherry pie, not COW pie… i wouldn’t want to eat that kind for sure…
It could be Elephant “Pudding” =)
Hm.. From the profiles it sounded like Maxima is the strongest, but from her interactions with everybody it seems like she isn’t able to get through anybody’s defenses. XD
I doubt that, even when provoked, Maxima would use her full strength on team mates and guests.
I don’t believe that shielding has any correlation to strength – to me that’s an “Apples/Oranges” comparison. If I wanted to measure a meta-human’s Strength, I’d measure their Invulnerability, since the limit of anyone’s strength is the ability of their body to survive it. Not just “puncture-proof skin”, but bones that won’t snap when you flex your muscles, & tendons that don’t rip loose from the bones they’re attached to. If I understand the idea of “tactile telekinesis” correctly, this is considered a mentally-generated form of “structural integrity field”, and from this it follows that it would apply to the above “yardstick” as well. For example, they would be applying the same “Invulnerable body-shield” to the building they want to lift, as to themselves, & the maximum size/weight that they can hold together (while lifting) defines the limit of their strength.
Look up “the Worf effect” on TV tropes (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheWorfEffect). Basically, the most common way to show how dangerous a bad guy is, is to have them defeat your strongest character in 1-on-1 combat, so the crew need to use teamwork to win. This eventually results in your strongest character being presented as a feeble weakling that can’t ever defeat your “monster of the week”. Hopefully Dave won’t fall into that trap too often and will reverse it on occasion “our powers combined are useless. Max, open up a can of whup-ass!”
That’s definitely a fine line to tread. Max is super tough but she’s not invincible. Her variable power levels can work against her but I need to be careful that she doesn’t fall into the Worf Effect or come across as Deus ex Maxima all the time. Really, given even power levels though, my money’s on Max cause she’s a tactical, dirty fighter as opposed to someone like Superman who just punches. I can’t wait till I get to the point that I can show you guys that.
I know that feeling, been working on a Novel series *as yet unpublished* that involves some seriously high level charaters. One of which *Rhulan* her original stats page I made I designed her to be the last boss of an RPG, so on the one hand I have the problem of introducing opponents that are ludicrously strong or having her be Deus Ex Machina (a trap I started to fall into when doing Fanfic involving her).
My biggest limiter with her so far has been (she is too strong for her own good) practically having to hold back so as not to harm the people around her when she fights. The Marvel (Alpha Plus conundrum) characters so strong that if they cut loose in battle they could rip space ships apart and scorch the earth, but become so accustomed to holding back that an opponent much weaker can throw them off their game and appear to beat them or best the team. *see Annihilators*
Of course there is the relative strength angle, put them among others of simular strength and they don’t stand out so much until they are mixed into the general population and then the group stands out.
(I kind of wish Slayers Try had done a little more with that, they had the group come to an outside world town *their country had been blocked from the rest of the world for a thousand years and inside the barrier black magic and physical strength had increased far beyond the rest of the world, so they came across as super-heroes*, but a short time later we meet the villain of the series and he knocks them all around).
In short, a fine line indeed between being a jobber and being the *super-man saves the day once again Deus Ex Machina*.
Am I the only one just waiting for when Sydney will see Dabblers true form and completely lose her shit? :O
nope… i got a Moxana point on the line for the REST of my prediction… so *I’m* still waiting with you at least. :D
i think she will just geek out and maby she’ll pull out a small stick and poke her a few times just to be sure shes real……or maby she will use her suprised fist’s of fury like she did against harem.
Remember Syd is a comic nerd with magical orbs floating around her head, and she’s being interviewed for a spot on a superhero team.
I think it would be funnier if Syd didn’t react and the others reacted at her non-reaction.
Sydney: Meh.
Dabbler: You’re standing next to a alien/succubus, how can you look so passe?
Sydney: Have you ever seen the cosplay at Comic-Com?
Or better yet she already knew about her being on the planet from the internet and asks for her autograph.
Or pulls out her “Holy Symbol” a double spread of either Hugh Jackman or Wolverine!
No it’s a Yaoi of Wolverine AND Hugh Jackman
Would someone please pass me the brain-bleach?
+1 to this. And if you think comics cons are wild you should try A-Kon. Anime freaks are freaky,
Great comic, only single update per week comic I have favorited. Great art and dialogue. I really think that if you pushed this to a 2x a week update it might become commercially viable. More updates= more rabid fanbase :)
If Sydney can manipulate where the orbs are, do the orbs want to orbit her head or is that where she puts them?
I’m guessing that “head orbit” may be their default state until summoned – hence the “HALO”-codename.
i don’t think Max is really serious when she punched Dabbler. After all Dabbler parry her punch (with a mystical shield no less) and we know Max is more powerful. I think Max want to dirty Dabbler pretty face a little with a nice black eye.
Interesting, Ariana refers to this room as her ballroom, meaning it’s most likely a multi-function room or a room she personnally put on. Hum… maybe worthy of digging a little more.
The use by Dabbler of a term from her original language show that she is a recent resident in an english-speaking country. I would say at least a year.
Also of interest is the fact that the symbols in the spheres are not recognized by Dabbler. In fact, i’m not sure if she acknowledged them as symbols.
Ah ah! Dabbler is forcing energy in an active scan. We are going to see (at last) if the spheres have an hidden cloaking funstion and/or a defensive system.
I wouldn’t be suprised if Ariana was the one to have the ballroom put in to the design works.
She is a political animal, and knows what needs to be used to keep the goverment money and public and political suport coming in.
That is a major part of her job after all.
Did anyone propose one of the ballz to be an amplifier for the rest yet?
….or maybe
Actually, that’s been my thought as well: an amplifier orb (green?) and a diminisher orb (red?).
Like, if the PPO could knock down a wall, amplified it could annihilate the building, diminished it could cut through the door lock.
The orbs are just MacGuffins! The real power source is inside Sydney! Her powers have cleverly disguised themselves and are controlling the orbs to distract everyone! It’s all misdirection, and Sydney knows, she has just buried the information so deep that she has forgotten as well. This is a feint that will be years in the making until she truly needs it, like at the Battle at the End of The Series™.
Cliche much?
And now for Maxima’s amusement, Dabbler completely clueless.
Mayby, and then she tries to grab one for a closer look and her hand passes right through it like it was a hologram.
Hard light constructs that are self generating and once they have bonded with someone, nobody else can touch them.
Now that would be so cool.
like some sort of symbols that you have been “chosen” for “all this s…” (reference sydney)
Did anyone see yesterdays Devils Panties?
DaveB you got to try this with your wife.
And there was an EGS reference in their two (Isn’t that a Demon Duck?) (and I misspelled words on purpose just to see if anyone could tell).
Maybe Sydney hasn’t said anything because one of the unknown orbs allows her to see through illusions? I dunno, but it was worth a shot. :P
There”s the book series – Lost Fleet – where the aliens had introduced a quantum virus into the computers of the human space ships that made them display completely wrong information about the aliens. A nifty way of making the enemy think you are more numerous and impossible to hit.
Of course once the humans found out and scrubbed the virus, the aliens got punched in the nose pretty hard.
I dont know if any one has sugested this but there are sevral super powers that have no desernable efect as an example look at Kitty Pride when she phases or super strength unless you enteract with some other object there would be no way to know you have it quiet frankly the fact she found the flight orb shows she obveusly has done quite a bit of expearamentation. (sorry for any mispellings but I have dyslexea and this thing dosnt come with a spell checker.)
Completely understandable and frankly I know quite a few people that spell worse with less reason
Just a thought here it would be sooooooooooo funny if Dabler got some major, ie ,put her on her ass across the room, feed back from the orbs just to let her know to keep her scanes to herself.
it would be cliche, but i’m so waiting for the next post from DaveB
Probably any place I consider going from here would be at least a little cliche. Hopefully it’s at least amusing.
“There is nothing new under the sun”
(old French saying)
…so don’t stress it, DaveB, just tell the story you want to tell, & (perhaps) you’ll choose a sequence of tropes that we won’t be able to anticipate. You’ve done so well, so far.
:)
Actually, that’s older than France, because, well, there’s nothing new under the sun. There’s an entire book in the Bible basically dedicated to that saying: Ecclesiastes.
Yeah I don’t want to start second guessing myself. On the other hand I need to be able to develop as a writer, so simply “transcribing my daydreams” may not always be the best path. The only good thing about taking forever to get these drawn is that I can come up with story and jokes way in advance and have plenty of time to set them up.
TVTropes is the fiction writer’s friend. it’s like Cervantes’ list of plots, only with MacGuffins (anybody rernember the GI Joe episode “The MacGuffin Device”?)
There may be nothing new under the sun but it might be an alien sun. And there are always new ways of depicting (alien invasion, creating life, reanimating the dead, divorce etc. That is where the creativity comes in though I must say that painter H. R. Geiger did produce art like I had never seen before.
Hey, DaveB. If you are looking for models for superior female musculature, I am thinking that there are a bunch of those women in London, England right now, many of whom are showing up on TV. I am thinking that Max and Anvil’s models could be found among the weight lifters; Dabbler’s in wrestling (all those arms and legs moving all over the place sometimes looked like they were attached to the same body); Arianna’s is among the coaches; Harem’s in the swimming or diving events, Peggy in the long-distance running or cycling; Halo, uh, her model is probably in the spectators somewhere.
I am fond of the swimmer, gymnast and decathlete physiques.
Maybe a gymnast? Slim active and an indoor activity.
THe last two balls are benwah balls.
Really old joke. Used for the first time during the reveal arc when Syd complained about not knowing what the two orbs did other than they were working because they glowed.
Actually, i think they were in my marble collection at one point in time. I could be wrong but then again i’ve lost my marbles and don’t know what i’m talking about.
Actually, I am betting on a Null orb that can nullify a great number of things, super powers, power sources, and scans to her person and the orbs themselves. The other one can be a Changer orb. One that changes to the needs, it can be any power she needs. This way she has a complete set. The orbs can be general in ability too, she just figured out one thing of each so far. The flight orb could teleport, move fast, or any power involving movement, for example. The fact that she hasn’t discovered all what they can do is no big issue when you are dealing with such a variety of powers.
Also, the orbs seem to react to her hyperactivity and variety of thought.
See, I don’t think either of the two mystery orbs are null orbs. Because Sydney needs to be holding the orbs for them to work. Don’t see any reason to believe that the last two are any different.
When I said Null orb I mean when in active use and when Sydney concentrates correctly she can Null other active powers. The anti-scanning thing is just a part of all the orbs but what I was getting at is that she can turn off powers that are directed at her or eventually learn to turn off a hostile’s powers or even a power source. Like shutting down a light switch. It takes reaching out and flipping the switch in the correct direction to work. So far we have only seen Sydney will the orb to do it’s thing with not direct focus.
the null field that we have to agree is part of the orbs could be a function that is connected to the always active fucntions. you know the know what your wielder wants, float around your wielder, these are not the orbs you seek.
