Grrl Power #1008 – Yarr har fiddle dee dee…
Option 1:
“Do you have anything to declare?”
“I do declare, it’s powerful hot, suh. I may have the vapors! And not just because of the all-bean-and-Mexican-tapwater diet!”
“Seriously, miss…”
“I as serious as a German school marm! I’m at DefCon 1 over here! Where’s the restroom!”
“>sigh< Out the door to the right, past the next terminal. NEXT!”
Option 2:
“What are these?”
“Glass… things?”
“Glass things?”
“Knickknacks. That’s the word. Colorful glass knickknacks. Non-suspicious, colorful glass knickknacks. >cough<”
“>Long Pause< I’m barely cracking minimum wage here, just go.”
I’m not sure what else to say about this page because most of what I want to say is on the next page.
Tamer: Enhancer 2 – Progress Update: Getting Proofed!
Still getting proofed. About halfway through the book now. This is from the first proofer who got back to me, and once I edit in all those corrections, I’ll run through it again with notes from the others. That tends to go faster, because some errors will be noticed by most, though different readers catch different things.
This month’s vote incentive guest stars Lana of Spying with Lana. One of my own secret agents, Pixel, is trying to assist, with various levels of success and… nudity. Well, in the Patreon versions. The Vote Incentive will give you a pretty good idea of what might go down. Here’s a dedicated post in case you want to comment.
Check out Spying with Lana. Their current vote incentive features a certain gold-plated glamazon. Also it’s a funny comic with tons of skin.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like.
Never mind the implications in the comic, why don’t we talk about how terrible the depiction of the swimsuit grab in the vote incentive is. It makes the dark haired character look like some kind of wooden mannequin. No skin deformation under the lower strap to signify the weight of the character present, and no reference to the more likely case where the weight and relative elasticity of the fabric and string would cause it to slide up into the armpits. It looks distractingly off to me.
Given the source comic about the secret agent, all of that is on point
The photo was snapped just as The brunette’s weight was beginning to be applied to the swimsuit. It’s no doubt incapable of being torn, so it would eventually support her weight, but prior to that, it would be stretched JUST a bit, and that led to this depiction
Given it’s Lara, the NSFW version probably DOES have the top slid up under the armpits. Though, given that it’s Lara, it’s curious that she still HAS the top at the end of a mission.
??? You are worried over the swimsuit depiction ???
Did you notice what was semi inside that suit?
*runs to the heart monitor*
I was doing some thinking about Sydney and the orbs. In another comment I mentioned that the asteroid that hit the planet and killed the dinos might of been a ship and the orbs were the captains’ now here’s a twist: the orbs require a mind that is able to either focus on multiple things at once or be able to switch focus rapidly. That said then only someone with a severely ADHD mind would fall into either requirement. Seeing how rare that could be in non-human races it could be if there were survivors only think they could do would be to secure the orbs until someone able to use them could be found.
65 million years later Sydney comes along. During a time where supers were becoming more common. The biggest reason this would make sense is because of the huge number of upgrades her skill tree has plus Cora seen so much more depth to the skill tree than anyone else could see. I would not be surprised if in the future Sydney would discover aspects of the orbs that not only were passives but were reactive to situations plus since she has a very limited control of them now what about in 10 years or more? i see a day when she can hold the ppo and evo orbs while using the shield just with her mind (in a limited way).
That would probably be a pretty good idea if the orbs could only be used by someone who has something along the lines of ADHD. :)
Despite how it would seem a little like that AWFUL movie, The Predator, where they tried to say that autism was the next step in human evolution to make the ultimate hunter/predator. That’s a literal line from the movie.
Considering how fast our tech has grown just in my life time (I was born in 1960 rotary phones on the wall, tin foil covered rabbit ears on top of the TV sort of deal) it’s a forced evolution that may only happen to some races that squeak by the “great test” that Cora and her crew mentioned when Peggy returned.
That doesn’t make any sense though it’s an interesting theory. ADHD is a construct of western culture: basically, in other types of cultures, having a brain that works in that way isn’t a problem, it’s just how some people are and some arent. In some, like in more nomadic societies, people with ADHD types genetics actually do better than their non-ADHD counterparts in terms of health and resources. People with ADHD have been proven to literally just be a different type of human brain than what we CONSIDER the “norm”. WAY more people have ADHD than are actually diagnosed due to the misunderstandings surrounding ADHD and how it works in people other than young boys, which is the expression of ADHD most people think of when they imagine someone with ADHD. When it comes down to facts, what makes someone “ADHD” is in no way unique to humans as it’s not a human disorder, but a human variant that exists due to evolution. The traits ADHD people have evolved into are not unique. If every human brain is a bunch of dials, people with ADHD have all the same dials as “regular” people, just set differently.
Agreed there … after all which type of person would survive better in the predator infested wilds of ancient times. One that can hyper focus on one thing at a time or one that can shift their focus on to several things at once (or at least one thing after another quickly).
I would hypothesize that ADHD was the norm and people that could hyper focus the anomaly … then again those that could switch between to two extremes would be the best choice (ADHD when fleeing a predator or group of them … then being able to hyper focus when tracking prey).
Still I agree … anecdotally … boys (mostly) didn’t have ADHD when growing up in my day … they were just boys with lots of excess energy … and boys had outlets for that excess energy … in my day … in the form of recesses, gym, physical and mentally intense (and hands on) school course such as archery, shooting, shop class (either woodworking or cars), and trades (later on). Things that I see no longer available to the younger generation of late. It’s all read this, repeat what I say, etc … not really a environment to bleed off that excessive energy that is now being diagnosed as ADHD and here take this pill to calm yourself down. NOW I am not stating that there are not people that have a need for meds … but if schools were better geared to the way that young boys (mostly) learn … to bleed off that excessive energy … I would think (hope) it would benefit all those that are oft … misdiagnosed … because they don’t want to parent a child that has excessive energy.
Just a thought …
ADHD folks *can* hyper focus. Or hyper scatter.
It’s regular focus that we can’t do.
I was using “accepted” terminology both myself and my youngest son was given that diagnosis when in fact we have ashburgers? Not sure how it’s spelt anyway we both were treated as ADHD with meds that did NOTHING to treat our issues and created new ones so i agree with your point there. My point was that in the story aliens may not commonly have that type of mind so it might be a one in a million situation however humans do and if you think about it if supers are a human only trait perhaps the crash resulted in them? Just voicing my thoughts here or as trekkies say: beta-cannon lol
Aspergers Syndrome. You’d have been diagnosed under the DSM-4, as due to the large amounts of overlap between AS and High Functioning Autism the DSM-4 had (with some unique things to each) plus the… connotations of having a term named after a Nazi scientist (not Mengele-bad, but up there), the DSM-5 rolled the Aspergers traits in to High Functioning Autism so it was more streamlined diagnosis and not “is it this one, or the other one?” choice paralysis for the diagnosing doctor.
I’m speaking as someone diagnosed with Aspergers in late-90’s/early-00’s and who tries to keep up to date of as much medical and scientific literature as feasible related to themself, but I will admit there are probably holes in my knowledge so I recommend you read up on things and might suggest getting an updated diagnosis just for legal and medical reasons if it comes up for anything like a disability insurance scheme.
I don’t buy this. People who can quickly change focus don’t have ADHD. It is something that “interferes’ with day-to-day functioning and/or development. If you are going through life, but you fidget, sometimes you’re forgetful or that lady in the red dress distracts you, or you suddenly find that something else is vastly more interesting… these are all behaviors that are perfectly normal. The disorder comes in when this starts preventing you from doing things you want to do, things that you know you should be capable of.
Yes, but being able to focus on things is really only useful in a developed society. In nature, it’s actually really useful to be distracted by things because you are more likely to notice the small changes in the environment that could mean a predator is closing in. Focus would be more useful for the predator to stay still and focus on the prey to sneak up on it and anticipate their eventual actions. Both types of brain are useful for survival, which is why both thrive in humanity. Yes, there are extremes of each that are less desirable. You don’t want to be someone who hyper focuses on one thing to the complete exclusion of everything else going on around you and you don’t want to be so distractible that you are incapable of getting anything done. But these two extremes are pretty rare. Most experiences of ADHD just make it really challenging in the structure of society that we have developed and most people who are extra focused thrive in this type of society since so many of the jobs that we rely on benefit from someone who can stay on task like that.
to add onto this theres a theory that “early risers” “night owls” and “insomniacs” are also a throw back to our caveman days when we would have always needed someone awake to help keep predators at bay
cause we are endurance hunters by nature the only advantage we have over other animals is our stamina
when it came to protecting ourselves numbers are what did it
it was only later that we gained our inate understanding of throwing things(seriously try and figure out all the math needed to throw a ball at a target, and then realize we do that on instinct at this point)
Read https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-278-alarmingly-disorderly-harnessing-of-doom/ again and this is what I’m referring to in a few moments she was able to create a successful plan to defeat a super villain that was about to kill Max and saved the day a “normal” mind simply doesn’t work like that. The fact she was able to tell herself to think things through to that level is the best example I can think of. Granted she did have a few distractions but she’s young and largely untrained at the time
ADHD/ADD. much like Autism, is a spectrum of behaviors. I have very little of the “physical hyperactivity” portion of ADHD. Mentally on the other hand, if I don’t have something to engage my brain, like a book, I would go crazy.
I found a very succinct and concise description of ADHD in another web comic named “El Goonish Shive”:
“It’s difficult to concentrate on-demand, but when they do, it can be a highly elevated focus that’s hard to snap out of.”
Yeah, I resemble that remark a lot. I call it my “Squirrel Factor”, taken from the movie “Up”, where Doug the dog gets distracted by squirrels when introducing himself, because he really focuses hard on it when he thinks he heard one.
That involuntary focus switch is the part that people talk about when mentioning the “ability to focus between unrelated subjects”. It’s basically our brain saying, “I’m bored with this topic, let’s see if there’s something I like to think about more, around here!”
” If every human brain is a bunch of dials, people with ADHD have all the same dials as “regular” people, just set differently.”
Oh my god, I’ve been saying things along those lines for so long, but this is the first time I’ve heard it put so succinctly.
I really wouldn’t have thought they’d be looking for someone with ADHD or ADHD like traits. I’d suggest it were the other way around… like they bonded to her because she needed them as a kind of stabilizing force… maybe, but even then there’s no evidence of that. I don’t think one has anything to do with the other and I’d certainly hope it doesn’t. It’s the “oh my disability is actually a super power” cliche and would cheapen the story.
Seeing more of the life about how people have huge barriers yet do amazing things in spite of them is what makes things interesting for me. Thinking up new and ingenious ways of overcoming both every day and fantastical obstacles.
i think the reason cora was able to see more depth to the orbs is because of her powers, she can literaly alter the laws of physics and reality to a fundamental level and sydneys orbs seems to work by tapping into a similar power source, but they are much more powerful in general
So what’s the problem? just file everything related to the Orb’s recovery location, past or future, as a “Covert CIA Mission”. Ain’t no rule saying that Archon has to ADMIT to where they really found the things. or why they’re engaged in a “perfectly legitimate spanish galleon treasure hunt” in the future.
it’s AMAZING what sort of bald-faced lies the CIA is legally permitted to engage in.
The origin of the orbs is classified. And unknown.
And subject to statute of limitations.
And they are clearly not of Mexican cultural origin.
There is no issue here, and no duty to report even if there were.
“Yarr har fiddle dee dee” indeed! ^_^
I wonder, considering the genre and demographic this webcomic draw in… how many of us only got that song reference, not from the kids show (something called “Lazy Town” apparently) and how many know it from Fred Perry (creator of the Gold Digger comic) who made an (WIP attempt at an) animated short to the song, using some of his pirate leprechaun characters?
Lazy Town version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8ju_10NkGY
Fred Perry’s Pirates version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I26Ql-uX6AM
*Definite FredPerry fan raises a hand*…
Count one for “I don’t actually know”! I recognised it as something that evidently really entertained my younger cousins several years back, but never bothered to find out where they got it from…
oh dear. well, sucks when this happens, but the only reasonable, and historically based solution to this situation, is for syd to invade mexico and set up a new nation with herself as queen.
huh, Sidney and Maxima may both have been *chosen* by alien tech to be hosts, possibly not even the same aliens of origin. Another bonding moment for them.
https://www.grrlpowercomic.com/archives/comic/grrl-power-415-are-you-there-god-its-me-maxima/
*assuming the orbs may have sat in that reef for who knows how long and started to shine (note they would go to sleep and stop glowing but Sidney implied they were glowing when she spotted them), so maybe revealed themselves to her as she got close to them*
WERE THE ORBS THE KT-EVENT?!
No, but their prior owner was. Heh.
I’m betting the staticky save point is because of the high speed impact.
tonight on Ascended + Jack-Ass, Zarthon the destroyer will surf an asteroid into a planet.
-aftermath-
Zarthon: Dude that was narly…I think I dropped my multi-tool on impact…somewhere…dude, I’ll just get another.
Since when has it ever been an issue for America to take what ever they want from the waters of another country?
(late post)
I am reviewing some back pages after my holiday hiatus. Dave wondered during the medal ceremony when he would forget to draw in the assorted military insignias and other hardware on Sydney’s jacket. Whoever had December 23rd in the pool, please collect your winnings.
I mean, in her defense, she didn’t know what they were at first, and we’re talking about a point in time where neither supers nor magic was known to the public as being real, why would she tell anyone?
