Grrl Power #7 – That Flying Rescue Guy!
A little insight in to the world at large here. Also evidence that I need work on drawing mountains.

Hell! You did one– way better than I can at this point.
Drone chopper? Or do they suggest this already?
Drone cameras would certainly be an option these days.
Yea, not a great option in 2011, almost none commercially available and terrible battery life.
But in (soon to be) 2020, heck yeah it would work great. Also strap a GoPro onto the hero himself and you would be golden.
Always a problem with long-run series like this, things that were not plot holes at the time, become plot holes later. Heck, the most recent comic is still set in 2011.
Haha, still waiting to catch up with Corporal Halo of the first four pages! ;)
Yes comicbook time, how weirdly it twists the world. Writing one day in a webcomic sometimes takes 3 years or more(see EGS). But I feel that the existence of whatever weirdness the comic is about can explain away any time dilation or sudden jumps in available technology or RL references. The world changes both FAST and slow in comicbookland.
Your mountains are fine, why do you think you need practice drawing them?
I guess they look all right, but I think it took me an entire evening to draw them.
Personally, I’d have generated some 3D mountains in one of those modelling programs (I have one somewhere on my computer) and then stuck filters on it in Photoshop until it looked vaguely drawn… but then laziness is my super-power.
Dude, I’ve been trying for YEARS to figure out how to draw a decent mountain, and you did it in one night?
Quit complaining! You’re a damned good artist! Don’t make me cuss you out Scoville Style!
Jason has a point; the level of skill to drawing mountains is difficult, so don’t short change yourself. By now at this time you probably have improved immensely at drawing scenery, but this does not invalidate the fact that this is impressive for an evenings work at the time you drew it. Even more impressive for the time that this was drawn is that the perspective is pretty spot on to this amateurs eye, so kudos for past you.
Ditto, I liked this back when I started reading(mid 2011) and my artistic sense was less refined but randomly nitpicky . And now all these years later I can see the errors but its still amazing for early in a webcomic (I binge read various series all the time).
I love that you added the “Probably Narrated By Mike Rowe” in there. Awesom
Camera choppers are in use. Remote control, much smaller than a regular copter. Cheaper too. And no dick bag to film while you have to work alone to save someone’s life.
The mountains are back ground they don’t need much in the way of detail.
First person camera and dramatic reenactment?
Throw in a couple camera drones and we might have something.
After giving this one some thought, I came up with a solution! Helmet cam! They also have those harnesses with a camera facing the person wearing it, and one facing forward. Easy fix. ^_^
As wrabbit said helmet cam is clearly the super cheap way to go. Survivor man also has a little camera with mini tripod he can slap down real easy. And with all the reality shows it would definitely get a few episodes on the air before it was cancelled. Doesn’t sound like there are enough super heroes around in everyday life for regular people to be anywhere near jaded about them yet.
Tracking micro drones with cameras that can be maneuvered by remote for the best shots. Just set up Rescue Man with a radio transmitter to let home based and the drones track him, with a live feed to home base in case he needs help with the rescue, and you’re set!
Oft times, a single person can’t effect a whole rescue, but first aid, bracing debris or even the application of thermal blankets in a timely manner can be the difference between life and death. I wish we could develops long duration jetpacks just for that sort of situation. (30 seconds of fuel ain’t enough to do anything of real use!)
I know I’m really late to the party, but the micro drones could even be really useful, since some may be used to try and find the people to rescue, leading the way for “That Rescue Guy” in addition to giving great shots for the show (and other rescue parties).
(of course, as it was pointed by others, micro drones were probably not really widespread in 2010…)
Most mini and micro drones drones still have limits as to how high they can fly for any length of time. But things are getting better. Currently the best with live transmition via satelight phone relay is Roughly 35 min and 6000m
What about some type of microcopter with a video camera attached to it?
This argument can be used for any of the rescue shows, oddly no one seems to yell at the camera guy to drop the damn camera and help.
that’s because, as a general rule, when the professionals are on-scene, the worst thing you can do is try to help. Why? because your average passer-by is untrained, and can actually make the situation significantly worse. If they need help, they’ll usually call for some of their co-workers to come. Or, in flying rescue guy’s case, the traditional rescue services.
I am totally jelly for your drawing skills.
Thanks! They improve considerably over the remainder of the comic. :)
I found this again after 2 years by searching my own name. Sweet.
Helicopters, bah. Get your head out of the ’80s. What about the flyer wears a helmet cam or glasses cam like clearcritic on youtube uses? Here’s a pretty good one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8rX2r2JBds
Easy solution: get a GoPro camera.
I just thought of that on re-reading. You could do head and chest, and he could carry a small handheld for flying footage until he reaches the victim (it could even have zoom and night vision/heat or something). Then just do lots of interviews and nature footage between rescues.
Though, I think when this was written/posted, GoPros weren’t as big a thing.
Also, drones/RC choppers with cameras only. Heck, it could even help with the rescues as a small team helps look for the victim(s), assesses nearby dangers, etc. and communicates with TFRG.
Keep in mind that when this comic page was published, GoPro wasn’t really a thing.
But nowadays, yeah, that’s a great solution.
How do we know “That Flying Rescue Guy” isn’t Mike Rowe?
I thout you could film it on a back mounted rig for an over the shoulder 3rd person perspective
Is this Hiro?
how would you film it…how about a few dozen camera drones programmed to fly around him
Too bad that the gopro came out after this comic.
I was just about to comment about how that would work, but I guess if this was more than fifteen seconds ago it would be expected that technology would affect things.
Helicopters would still be used for… Well, filming and rescue services, it’s not like there’s just one of any given thing. Also, unless the superhero is a piece of equipment, he should get vacation time, yeah?
With my advanced knowledge from the future year of 2015 *thunderclap* I can solve the problem with aerial drones.
Being linked back to this, it makes me realize, wouldn’t the super powered camera man be in the same predicament of other camera men. Don’t stop filming, don’t interfere?
You know, they actually solved this in some ‘man versus wild’ things. Button-cam that he takes off and uses for close-ups.
GoPro helm cam thingy. Would work perfectly.
Yeah, believe it or not those weren’t really broadcast quality when this page was posted.
Actualy the other problem is what you see here, in that one guy is not always enough, unless it’s someone like Max or Superman.
…Hehehe. Seeing how things have changed over a decade is FUN.
I am glad to be part of these first few generations where world changing technologies happen several times a decade, instead of once every century.
Before 1980, maybe once a decade. Before 1950, once or twice every fifty years. Before 1800, maybe once a century (usually less), and then it took forever to become widespread.
After 1980, five or six world changing technologies. 1990, saw most of them become widespread and then even more. 2000 and 2010, I honestly could not count the number and would probably miss dozens.
Our parents and grandparents did not live in a society that changed often. Our culture is almost completely defined by change. I have no fear of the future, because it will change in ways that I can not comprehend yet but am ready for because I know that tomorrow will be different. We must accept that the world has ended, and been born anew.
It kinda dates this that the obvious answer now would be ‘remote-piloted drones’.
Jeeze, reading this comic now, and my answer is “Drones. They’d film him with drones. And Go Pros.”
Oh wow.
Pre-drone.
Shows that this comic is more than a decade old.
Technology advancement be cray-zeeeeeeeeeeeee man.
