Grrl Power #132 – Clash of the egos
We can assume Sydney went into more detail and possibly did some demonstrations while Deus was having a laugh on the previous page.
The vote incentive is updated with Dabbler answering more questions about Harem.
#3The ComicMix Webcomic tourney is on to round three now, and we’re up against Order of the Stick – Yikes! Comicmix had add the ability to vote via Twitter as well as Facbook, so rally the forces! It would be a real coup to beat OotS.
Matt ranks higher in the character bios, but perhaps he might loose concentration if Sydney winds him up well enough. That should actually be on her bio- and it might raise he power rank.
winning a battle is not about raw power or even skill sometimes.
The mindset of the combatatns, their tactics, and even dumb luck, can play major roles in the outcome. How do you think weaker armies win battles against supperior forces?
They find some awesome power hidden deep within them selves!……
At least that’s what happens in manga/anime…
For the lack of a nail the shoe was lost…. Small things can snowball into major losses.
Strategy Schmategy
All martial arts are based on order, Sydney is pretty much an embodiment of chaos. Math doesn’t stand a chance.
Adaptability is quite essential if you’re planning use use martial arts in an actual fight. Adaptability is the absolute best way to deal with unpredictable situations (or “chaos” if you prefer).
Ok … in one corner we have Sydney, who is a ball of hyper energy with no apparent skill at fighting. She’s also seems a bit ‘drunk’ on her power at the moment, not realizing its limits. Three strikes against her.
In the other corner we have Math, a skilled martial artist who has just been insulted. His ego needs to be salved, so he might not be thinking as clearly as he could. Also he is fighting in front of others, so he’ll probably feel obligated to ‘tone it down'(especially with the boss present). Two strikes against him.
This strip has comic gold potential, so its two strikes against either of them coming out without something amusing and or mortifying happening. “We will never discuss this event again, understood?”
This leaves the final tally at Math -4, Sydney -5. I’m predicting Sydney will come out the worse of the two, but they’re both going to end up suffering in SOME fashion.
+1 vote
True but for a trained martist (martial artist is just too long to keep typing) [and so I typed something even longer to explain my contraction, **lose**] anticipation requires that the opponent doesn’t do something impossible just by not knowing it is impossible.
Math is used to fighting people with supernatural powers though. Sydney isn’t used to fighting professionals so mundane feints would be just as useful against her as more esoteric attacks since she would have a hard time predicting either.
With that said, this is a comic, so pretty much anything could happen. Sydney could knock herself out with an orb, Math could trip on his shoelaces, or a roof-hanging plant could suddenly come down and knock both of them out for all I know.
Scene Location: Arc Infirmary
Description: Sydney and Math are lying in adjacent hospital beds, their heads both wrapped in bandages. The unnamed asian doctor is checking Sydney`s vitals, just as she is stirring into wakefulness.
Sydney: “Wha… what happened? Did… something hit me? Last thing I remember was fighting Math.”
Doctor: “Super Roofies”
Sydney sits bolt upright, all drowsiness vanished.
Sydney: “He gave me what! What did he do?”
Doctor: “Math? Nothing. And do not worry, you have not caught a disease. You were hit by Super Roofies. Our resident botanist, Gene Splicer, has just as weird a sense of humour as you. That is what she called the guardian plant she created. It can detect hostile intent and has been bred to disable anyone attempting an attack within close proximity of it`s planter.”
Sydney must win.
Smugness must never prevail.
I foresee much humility, (And stark disbelief) in Math’s future. :-P
This comic is called “Grrl Power” for a reason! Dave, don’t screw us.
But Sydney IS the (more) smug one in this situation! In fact, I am betting on Math in this fight because Sydney just claimed invincibility, which plummets your success rate.
Ooooo, logic. Pops the bubble every time. :-P
Yes, but since when has logic worked whenever Sidney is involved.
Odd as it is, my money is on Sydney… her chaos factor, it is epic.
Not to mention that awesome verbal barrage she can unleash…..at will?
I’m tempted to bet on Sydney, but she’s not hot enough to distract Math with her feminine assets. Both of them could use a serving of humble pie. What worries me is her promise to him. Foreshadowing? I’m kinda anxious about the next page, now.
In that first panel, is Dabbler still fishing? I can’t tell.
Maybe she is his type and he just over compensates with the other ladies so they don’t doubt his sexuality.
Ha! Now, that would be interesting. :)
I am thinking on putting my money on whoever steps in, if anyone does. But otherwise my money would go on Sydney.
I wasn’t originally gonna post on this one, but on the off chance I was right, I wanted it to be out there. I’d be with the majority on this one and say Sydney due to her unpredictability, but I think Math will come out ahead. And my reason is thus: (here goes an attempt at a spoiler) If I am 100% right, I don’t want to spoil Daves fun by revealing it so I’ll say it like this. There is a certain aspect of Math’s profile on the cast page that stands out a bit from the other character’s profiles that make me think for certain that Math will win simply because it would fit perfectly for the situation. I’ll leave it at that for now and if noone figures out what I’m talking about I’ll explain it after the fight.
Well here’s looking forward to the next page. Have a good weekend everyone.
am i right in thinking that its got something to do with [spoiler]his quote[spoiler]
damn it i don’t know how to do that blank out thing
his quote
You had it right for the opening term. The closing term just needs a “/” inserted after the opening bracket.
Thanks
Highlight the blank area as you would text. Right click on it and copy. Open Notepad and right click and paste.
Ta! Da!
You can write “invisible” text by changing the font color you just typed to the same color as the background. It will be visible when it is highlighted. Try it in just about any word processor program.
Or just click in the grey area to reveal the hidden text.
Believe it or not that didn’t work on my old XP box until I opened Notepad…then it appeared as you say. What’s up with that?
Good catch.
However, I don’t think there will be a fight:
1) It would be out of character for either the General or the Colonel to let the fight happen. Especially considering the press conference is due to start.
2) Dave B is really creative and is good at surprising us.
Is it just me, or is Sydney’s force field way overpowered? She could just use that, tentacle thing, and the four other balls as clubs until he made a mistake.
Kinda, but what I want to know is if you can lift the forcefield with her in it?
If so, toss her in an ocean and ta-da!
The other question is can anything go out of it?
Actually, you couldn’t toss her in the ocean because she could just use her orbs to lock herself in place.
However, if you could pick up and move the forcefield with her in it (which wouldn’t make much sense, since Maxima would have knocked her back by punching it earlier if that were the case), then you could just shake it and have Sydney slam against the insides.
As Meshaber mentions on the previous page of comments, Halo would need to hook the orbs on something in order to use them to stop falling (or do a pendulum-like swing). However, assuming the Fly Ball is unavailable for some reason, I guess she could grab hold of any of the balls and tell it to fly in the direction she wants to go.
It all depends on what sort of load they could take whilst in normal flight (which also affects how hard they can punch and other similar uses). Possibly they are not, individually or collectively, strong enough to lift the weight of a person. Which may, or may not, be linked to any limit on what their strength is when they become immovable.
Plus she is just a normal person, so could not actually hold on for very long. It takes a mountaineer or someone with equally developed grip to do that for more than about a minute.
I’m a little torn as to who would win between these two…
Sydney obviously has the whole ‘main character/hero’ thing going for her, but that hasn’t helped much in the past. Mathias is not technically a super either, he just appears that way since he can apparently fight all ‘Matrix style’…. and yes, I’m basing that off the profile page.
Mathias can be easily distracted by pretty women, whereas Sydney can easily be distracted by attractive men.
I dunno who to vote for. I think they would make an awesome team if they could ever stop antagonizing each other and focus on the battle.
Incidentally if by any chance anyone has had relationships with the Succubus you should know that traditionally in such relationships the succubus can and will have the knowledge of any and all partners siphoned from the minds of said partners. however being that she is half alien this may not apply. I happen to write a great deal of things dealing with the occult and fantasy, plus I do research into such things which isn’t exactly a precise science. But in what writing I can find in such things the above does apply. I’m not sure your going by the traditional concept of the succubus though since yours is a hybrid specimen.
As good as Math is, chaos and just plain dumb luck along with one wicked tongue would put Sydney in in for the win. Many times a very skilled fighter has been owned by a rank amateur by a lucky strike. Besides, I would like to see Math whupped by a skinny mean tempered sharp tongued girl.
Nah! it’ll be funnier in the long run to have Math LOSE this fight, and to save face, he attempts to fight again at a later date after some intense training to overcome her advantages and to TAKE advantage of her fighting weaknesses… as well as give him a bit of a friendly rival to school him in a bit of the humility that he seems to need. and as for Halo, it’ll give her a bit of self-confidence concerning her abilities (as granted by the orbs) BUT she’ll get her butt handed to her by Max, the General, or POSSIBLY Ariana for the collateral damages to the surroundings that will help her stay on an even keel and force her to think BEFORE acting, more than she seems to do normally, i think…
AND… I’m totally shocked that nobodies said anything yet about “The Pink Panther”… Yep… i foresee a series of “Inspector Clouseau VS Cato” style of surprise attacks in the near future. right when Halo is least expecting it too…
I’m betting on Sidney for one reason… her breath.
OK being serious… I want to bet on Sidney but the odds are in Math’s favor. Math is a trained fighter who is skilled enough for it to be a superpower but it looks like Sidney can use her orbs as 7 extra fists. …Though if Sidney levitates him then hits him with a beam blast then it won’t matter.
Don’t forget she promised him he won’t be her “Gwen Stacey”. So she probably will reframe from using the PPO.
Cue music:
“Spider-Syd, Spider-Syd, does whatever a Spider-Syd does”
“Can she swing from a web? No she can’t she’s just Syd. Lookout here comes the Spider-Syd!”
I say she is a black belt in something and is going to clean his clock because she has been a smart ADD girl and playing with her new toys as much as she can to figure out how they all work and how to use them in a fight.
Three possibilities…
Double KO, they fight to a dead standstill and prove to be an equal match, cause much collateral damage in the process and neither is willing to admit that it’s a draw. (Leading to future arguments about who “won” that match on down the line.)
She looses, but insists that its because of something “Trivial”(Her eye injury and accompanying loss of depth perception that resulted)
She wins, but only barely.
Fourth: Cut away to Deus or something else also interesting; come back to a scene involving scorch marks all over the walls, Sydney dangling from the ceiling by one foot, Math tied up in a corner, a large pile of pasta, and Maxima saying “Okay. Now that we have a clear winner…”
What if Math takes a dive in such a way that Sydney thinks she Stacey’d him? He may have faked going down before. Maybe.
Just an FYI.
Every week i recommend a webcomic on my blog.
This week i recommended Grrl Power.
Check out what I have to say at https://theseizurecomic.com.
thanks!
Nice looking review.
Tried looking for an email or other PM way of contacting you, just to give you a heads up, but no joy, so guess the only way is to mention it here, and hope you check in.
You forgot to change the “Created by” details, so it is showing the creators names from your previous week’s choice (Oliver Knorzer and Powree from Gaia/Sandra and Woo). Unless David Barrack has been keeping an alternate identity secret from us, that is.
Nice catch: I’m fixing that right now. thanks! oh, and btw my email is quannage@gmail.com.
Methinks that the power of another one of her orbs is about to be revealed. Something to do with on contact destruction.
One thing in Sydney’s favor is that I believe Dave has impied that she has the podential of being one of the strongest supers, but she has no training. It’s hard to say if that’s a point in her favor or a point against her. But I think it atleast raises the chances of her pulling off something unusual.
7 more votes in 1hr 20min or this comic will lose
Don’t know if it’s possible or not, but could Sydney project the force field around Math?
I love how you showed the spinny orbits. Very nice.
I honestly don’t see much chance of Sydney winning this one. She’s just far too sure she’s going to, and is bragging way too hard. Plus she’s managed to get surprise smacks in on Harem, Dabbler, and Math himself once already, even if that was a failed attempt at eliciting guilt affection. Hey ego is swelling at a rate that means SOMEthing has to burst it. Anyway! How often does the person who starts the fight actually win?
In the real world? far to often :P
And i would think this machup goes to Math, simply because the author has allready talked about it earlier, and said that the only way for Halo to avoid losing, would be to fly up and cover herself with the forcefield, resulting in a draw.
I don’t know. I think she has a chance if she uses her orbs powers
I bet on a streat fighter style match start, than a giligan cut to math running aroung with Sydney attached to his head with her teeth.
With all the food she eats? All she needs to do is spit. The residual capsaicin will etch steel.
Is it wrong I want Sydney to be taken down a peg? That said, Math also needs to be taken down a peg. That said, I can see Sydney totally wrecking this building trying to grab him. That said, I hope Math disables her quickly!
Right on both counts. All three, if you include your hopes.
This is a new meaning to the term “tripping balls.”
Note that Sydney is presuming that combat is indeed a transitive relation, and that combat skill forms a totally ordered group. I suspect it isn’t. It’s more like a kind of rock-paper-scissor thing, which happens to be a cyclic group instead.
Since I’m reading this stuff again I’ll say something enw this time, If Ranma 1/2 taught me nothing else it taught me to never bet against the leecher
Those Ha Has are annoying.
