Grrl Power #131 – Cue maniacal laughter and lightning
Surprise! Random double sized page for you. I’ve been trying to avoid cramming 12 panels onto a page, but there was no way to do this one the way I wanted without breaking it up weirdly or just smashing the panels to microscopic proportions, so this is my solution.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to update the vote incentive yet, I’ll try and have that tomorrow evening. I need to figure out something else to do for the incentives. I like doing them but some of them take as long as doing an entire page, and quite frankly I’d rather spend the time on another story page, and I’d imagine some of you would prefer I do anything I can to pick up the pace as well. I’ll do the Dabbler’s Science Corner as promised but maybe next month I’ll post teaser images of pencils from the next page or something.
Edit: Oh, and I just found out about this: Comicmix.com is having their annual webcomic popularity contest, so if you like, you can go vote for Grrl Power to get us seeded into the starting bracket. No idea how far we’d get in the actual tourney but it’d be fun to try! Oh, and I should mention that you can vote for more than one comic in this seeding round, so you don’t have to play favorites quite yet. :)
Edit 2: The Comicmix tournament has started properly, and it’s single elimination, so go get em! (And thanks for the support!) Unfortunately their page is overloaded with all the polls it’s almost unusable, at least on my work laptop, but maybe perseverance it part of the tournament. We’re up against Scenes from a Multiverse, which is a pretty funny comic by a veteran webcomicer. It has sort of a Futurama vibe to it. Also, I’m not sure if you can vote just once, or in each bracket, their facebook/poll plugin is acting a bit squirrely for me, so, you know, just in case, vote for Grrl Power first. :)
hahaha..nice =D
You have my sympathies for the initial injury and your determination to make it into something positive. However, looking at the photo, I would say extremely large, rather than ugly, myself. Other than romantic duelling scars, none are attractive. But at least you avoid ragged edges or big stitching scars. A couple of mine have the latter.
I have considered the same route as you, but advise that you go the route of having the tattoos work around the scar, incorporating it. Rather than trying to tattoo directly onto the scar tissue. Simply because I consulted with a couple of tattoo artists on the subject and they advised that the inks may not fix properly on scars.
Plus there is the likelyhood that the tissue will be far more sensitive to pain than ordinary skin and there is the risk of damaging it. None of which should be considered authoritative, however, as neither tattooist had actual experience on the matter and were simply voicing their opinion.
However, as they are the only two reputable ones in my area, I listened to their advice. Should you learn differently, I would be interested to know. Although directly covering the scar with a tattoo was my preference, I am still toying with getting a design to work around my mine.
In my case I have a couple of scars that start on the back of the shoulder, travel over it, and then, getting wider and much more visible, travel down the front of the arm. Right in anybody’s field of view if I have either no shirt or a short sleeved shirt on.
My concept was a dragon on my back, with either a claw grasping over the shoulder or the tail coiling around it. Either of which would probably do more to emphasise it, rather than disguise it. But that would not bother me, as I have grown comfortable with it over the years.
Once they get over the initial surprise/ick response, it genuinely does not seem to bother most people. I am sure that there will be a few who are just being polite, and concealing any distaste, but frankly I have enough scars that if they are bothered, disguising the most prominent one would not make much difference anyhow.
I wish you luck in your venture and hope you end up with a great work of art.
*sigh* missed out a word when re-typing my reply to Opus the Poet “… and commendations on your determination to make it into something positive
The skin graft has no nerves at all, with minimal sensation in the rest of the leg because of all the nerve damage. I have heard from some tattoo artists that skin grafts are the most difficult thing they have to work on because some are just like regular skin, and some are like trying to do watercolors on blotting paper where all the colors run together. The artist I have chosen has said that he will have to do a test run to see how he’s going to do the tattoo and may not be able to work directly on the graft.
I am starting to think this guy is related to Sydney.
-what a twist-
If you had a button like his wouldn’t you use it?
if I were the kind of man who’d use it, I’d totally have more than one in case one of them breaks from overuse. And the guilty pleasure panel face would have been practiced with a mirror daily.
I’d want extra options for other moods and situations.
Now that we can see more of Vale, I must say that I’m not a fan of her outfit. It makes her look like a GI-Joe reject.
Nah she’s just into leather and straps.
I went to the March Madness comic contest page, but I’m a ‘tard and could not find a way to place a vote.
Once you have put in a single vote, the screen changes to one that has no vote option, but just lists the ratings so far. But, prior to that, just put a check mark next to the name of the comic and hit the button way down at the bottom of the list. Something along the lines of “submit vote” from memory.
Except for me, when it decides to load at all, it’s just an empty screen with a background and the logo, nothing else
Ah, not to kibitz too much but you talk about the attempt to avoid a 12 panel page failing, but this is only ELEVEN panels, so you succeeded! (OK, so that’s lame, whaddaya expect on only one cup of coffee?)
No, no, caffeine bad! Just say “no”!
machina industries… MI lol
I think Vale’s butt should look clenched in frame 7. I know mine would be.
What the hell? Hey, Mr. B. As much as I enjoy your work, I’m not about to get a facebook account just so I can vote for Grrl Power. (That’s pretty chickenshit on their part, I think.) I still come here everyday to vote the regular way, if that’s any consolation. Sorry. :(
Yea, I am afraid it rules me out too. :(
I have no Faeces Book account, nor any wish to ever do so. They have too great a disregard for privacy. It also irritates me just how much data about me I know they have collected, despite me never having signed up!
No worries guys, I appreciate you just reading the comic and commenting, though I think you can vote anonymously, there’s a checkbox on the vote form for it. I assume it just notes your IP address to prevent spamming. I’ll try it from home tonight.
Oh wait, I think that still requires a FB account, it just doesn’t show your name in the list of people who voted. Oh well. Tell a friend with a FB account to vote for you. :) I’ll probably need all the help I can get in the next round, I’m pretty sure I’ll be up against Dumbing of Age, which has a sizable audience.
There’s the option of buying votes, which might be useful in a close round. I tried to buy some as a test, but I’m apparently too stoopid to get it right. You’re welcome, Hero Initiative. Sorry, Dave.
Seriously, can anyone explain how to properly buy votes over there?
I have the same problem…you could try to click it twice rly fast but that might not work
That remind me an episode of Phineas and Ferb

(i found it only in italian)
I must admit to hearing Patrick Warburton every time I read Deus’s lines
I don’t know why people are assuming he’s going to be incompetent because of this. A guy who creates his own dramatic illustration is bound to be genre savvy. And considering it seems like one of Sydney’s main powers is going to be genre savvyness, not to mention her being even weirder and one of the most powerful people in the strip, I’d say chances are he’s going to end up extremely competent at whatever it is his goals end up being. Just… amusingly over the top in the style of execution.
An example that belatedly comes to mind: Syndrome from The Incredibles. He was at least as silly right off the bat. And one of the most effective supervillains in any setting. How many superheroes do most ever actually manage to kill off?
So basically, we have found the perfect arch-nemesis for Sydney.. an evil millionaire with A.D.D
Note: Even though I’m pretty sure he’s most likely crazy I expect him to be a formidable foe for them.
A Mr. Deus
with a X-shaped scar
who’s the leader of “Machina”.
At least his name’s not McGuffin.
What’s with all the face scars? A good percentage of all the guys here seem to have them.
Um, other than the villain featured above, the only other cast member who has a facial scar is Peggy. And she is a girl not a guy. So really not sure what you are getting at?
Pretty sure Math has a scar. I could be wrong, though. Your point stands, but maybe even just two guys seemed like a lot to geminifille. XD
Check out his profile picture, on the cast list, there are none on his face. Which was specified, in the initial comment.
But, as regards his body, you are correct. Many times over! :-D
I think I’ve been misinterpreting his weird facial structure as scars.
…And I just realized the other reason I find his face weird, which is that he’s often drawn without eyebrows. Yipe.
The lightning only reinforces what a good guy he is. He probably got that scar saving a bus full of orphans…..BLIND orphans!
It was at this point that Deus became my favorite character in the comic.
