Grrl Power #122 – If only all behavioral therapy was this easy
Back unto the breach. I missed you guys. Well, I checked in on the comments a few times but mostly I was drawing over the break, and hardly spending any time playing Far Cry 3, I promise. I did manage to get an extra page finished over the holiday so yay, buffer. Now I won’t miss a post if I lose power over the weekend or whatever.
The reason this takes place in Leon’s office (you can see the servers behind Max and Syd on the last page) is that I forgot to draw the funny shirt I was going to put on Leon the first time I put him in the comic, so I needed an excuse for him to change it. Of course, now that I’ve called it out, everyone will be all “It’s not that funny” when they see it, but at least this way it leads to a good way for Sydney to be introduced to him and a few jokes on the next page.
As a nice little bonus this page shows a bit of a flashback to Max as a teen. I’ll eventually show her origin, but probably in little snippets here and there. I don’t know that every little detail needs to be spelled out.
Also I finished the background on page 120, so that page is finally complete. And if you didn’t see it last week, thanks to Shouri for her Sydney pinup.
Edit: Added the orbs and a little smoke, etc to Max’s flashback panel to make it more clear what happened.
Just started rereading the comic on a whim. Can’t stop laughing, reading Grrlpower without the delay between pages is intense XD
Yeah when you don’t have 3-4 days of breather the jokes start stacking up and you end up hurting yourself laughing :D
I gotta say I love this comic, writing is good, art is excellent….. But Halo is my least favourite character. Hyper active wackyness is.. well. More Suited to American humour perhaps? If I saw someone Do that I’d just think them a silly over dramatic poser who’s nowhere near as funny as she thinks she is.
Ehhhh, Not so much american as 40-60s humor…
Funniest things on this page have to be both of Max’s reactions.
A defining feature of ADD is that one’s destructive/hyperactive/stubborn/overdramatic behaviour tends to come across as willful, disingenuous, or pretense. It’s not. There is nothing to be gained by dismissing someone’s behaviour as play-acting without knowing their background. Silly and overdramatic? Yes. Poser? Absolutely not.
Besides, this is a comic. Sometimes people act in ways that would be unlikely in real life. I find a lot of Sydney’s behaviour pretty over-the-top even for someone with ADHD, but I accept it because it’s a comic — and some people are crazy simply due to their personality, regardless of any neurodevelopmental issues.
As someone with ADHD, I can attest to this. The crazy behavior is typically completely genuine. Seriously, the stupidest of ideas can seem amazing, if you’re hyper enough. Also, the general tendency towards mildly related tangential thoughts popping into your head is pretty accurate.
I wasn’t really aware of how that comes off to people. Annoying? Sure, I realized that. Seeming like I’m acting, when I’m just genuinely that freaking hyperactive? That I wasn’t aware of. That…kinda explains a few things about my childhood, particularly in my ability to make friends. Luckily, I managed to find enough people who understood it was genuine that it didn’t affect me that badly, but still.
I believe that the proper term is ‘retrophrenology’.
i love the second panel
Max absolutely losing it in the last panel is just *chefs kiss*
This is one of my favourites. It’s best read when it is very late and you really need to sleep.
