Grrl Power #113 – Secret meetings in smoky wood paneled rooms
We’ll leave the girls to their ogling for a bit. I’m not actually sure what the next comic will be – it’s a toss up between continuing this meeting or flashing back to the incident that Faulk is referring to. If I was putting out the comic 3x a week it would be a no brainer to cut to it relatively quickly but even if I can tell it in 3-4 pages that’s still a month long diversion. I’m tempted to just to jump to a new setting for a bit and also get a little insight into Max. I’ll probably stick a poll up on the facebook page early Monday so the comments don’t get mired with it. I’ll link to it here once I do.
Two links to entertain you this week. One is Servants of the Imperium, which is essentially Order of the Stick, only set in the Warhammer 40K universe. I’m on a WH40K novel kick at the moment so I tore through it. It’s amusing and a little self aware at times, so you don’t have to be an expert on WH40K lore to enjoy it but it wouldn’t hurt.
The other link is an apology for letting my vote incentive languish for so long (I appreciate the continued votes BTW) Instead of working on that I did a piece for Hatefarm’s Mistress Missy Fanart Contest and before I link to it I’ll warn you that it’s super NSFW, so be warned.
BTW, Dave. Thank you for the link to Servants Of The Imperium. Having become a fan of the Rogue Trader RPG, this is much appreciated.
I found this weeks easter egg.
Arianna’s missing her eyeshadow. Panel 5.
We can forgive panel 4 since it’s at a distance.
Let me guess, she destroyed a Mosque while screwing with a goat?
Love the latest comic, but I have to admit, I am also highly amused by this:
” I was a little shocked to see that Dave B would get so raunchy with his submission”
You should see the one he did for Girls With Slingshots.
I’m not good with links, so you will just have to look it up yourself.
https://www.girlswithslingshots.com/comic/guest-strip-dave-barrack/ or https://www.girlswithslingshots.com/comic/guest-comic-by-dave-barrack/ ?
Either one is award worhty in my book.
Updated link (it’s #10, in the 2nd row): https://www.girlswithslingshots.com/gueststrips.php.
Yeah, I reign in my raunch quite a bit for this comic. I have some really dirty jokes that I want to use, but I may have set the bar a little too general audience with the comic already.
I say go for it do your worst but pre-warn us for those who might offend easily. I believe MOST of us are either adults or sufficiently mature to handle it. And any you lose because of a dirty joke would be lost later anyway when you hit their hot button.
Just have two versions. The general audience and the adult versions.
I’d say the warning on the front page that’s already there ought to suffice. But I live/work in a world not of this realm, so my thoughts on the matter might be a bit skewed.
When I first heard about it, I thought you had made that epic page with tons of dildoes in the dishwasher.
Meh, personally I like grrlpowercomic for what it is now, if I want a quick dirty joke I go for OGLAF (definitely NSFW).
I discovered the webcomic ‘spacetrawler’ recently and it really reached the ‘religiously read’ status like servant of the imperium, order of the stick, girlgenius, grrlpowercomic, and schlockmercenary. I know how it is to get addicted to a NEW webcomic…
Spacetrawler, never seen that one. Looks like the same guy who does S.S. Myra (I think is the name – it looks like a completely NSFW version of spacetrawler.)
I’m sure it was a decision between a whole schoolbus full of nuns and a mosque.
An empty mosque.
…there’ll probably still be a few people who hate her for it.
And there would be people who would hat you for destroying a church, which is what she did.
Church, Moske, Synagog. They are all houses of worship.
Houses of worship are just buildings, maybe a little more ornate but buildings. Some are abandoned when a newer one is built or when the congregation gets smaller or larger. If you’re a christen then your bible states “wherever 2 or 3 are gathered in my name there I will also be” so it’s not the building that makes a church it’s the people.
Tell that to the ones with multi-million dollar “Churches” and than cry over needing money to help the “poor orphan children” in where ever.
Couldn’t agree with you more. I now live not far from the CBN campus (Pat Robertson’s place) who was caught flying diamonds on the planes that were supposed to be used to help the needy. And people wonder why I’m not a believer.
in all fairness, the big ornate building generally represents a very small percentage of their intake from donations, and built up over years, even generations, by people making private donations to beautify their church.
And let us add that for all that you talk about churchgoers in fancy churches being hypocrites, people in GENERAL are hypocrites— and tend not to make donations to organizations that look raggedy and poor themselves. If “Jerry’s Kids” didn’t have a million-dollar telethon, how many would donate?
Depends on your church and who owns it.
Some churches would get you the anger of everyone who goes to it for destroying their “holy house for the lord”.
In other cases they would ask you for the money to buy a new tent and have the preacher hug you, because he/she was convinced his church was too hidden and locked up in their building and ofcourse everything inbetween that.
As for mosques I’ve no idea.
Or it was a mosque that some lunatic was shooting rockets out of. They actually HAVE quite a few of those you know?
Chill dude, it’s just a joke.
…mostly.
What about Shadow Arc as the name of X’s branch, or is it canon that Arc must precede the descriptor?
By the way love this comic, I must be home at 7pm Monday my local time every week
Hey, that’s same timezone as me! Western aussie?
Having X go *SIGH* on the name arc-dark, and that “how could I not?” over Dabbler’s lust aura earlier, makes X feel like a human and discard any ‘robot’ theories.
I vote that when X’s real first name is finally revealed it turns out to be ‘Malcolm’
(or at least that Sydney get annoyed with his secrecy and starts sarcastically calling him that anyway)
Eh :p X is still a person which can turn invisible, and was following a succubus ! :p so that malcolm nickname is not that far fetched ^^
Poor X, if he has her in Arc-Dark it will be a constant nightmare for him. And I wonder if Sydney will like X or not, he certainly doesn’t seem that hard to work with and has probably dealt with far worse then that maniac Sydney.
uhm….so she blows up mosques on purpose? =/
Could be worse. Maxima could have drawn allah — even if it’s not in an unflattering position, that’d be more holy warness coming than this!
By accident but maybe a little extra damage than absolutely necessary. Someone dumb probably tried to enforce their ridiculous ideals of how women should act or dress on her.
Question! When you say ancillary. Dont you mean auxillary? I ask that because I’ve never heard of the word ancillary and auxillary seems more fitting for what he is describing.
Ancillary is a real word, and a synonym of auxiliary. Always remember, on the internet, this information is only one click away, and easier to get on Google than actually writing out a comment!
To be annoyingly pedantic, Because being pointleslly petty amuses me it’s actually two left clicks followed by a right followed by another left click. So it’s FOUR, clicks away really.
Or if you use a browser with built in search function, a single click and 10 quick key strokes.
Never postpone to tomorrow, what someone else can do for you today!
Never postpone your procrastination, do it NOW!
There is a slight difference in meaning between ancillary and auxiliary, more in function than relationship. For example, and Auxiliary Power Unit would be a stand-by power generator which would typically provide power when the main unit can not do it, like in the case of a generator failure. An Ancillary Power Unit would be there for when the load increases to the point that the main generators can’t keep up. Sort of an add-on power. In many cases, one unit could take on both roles, depending on circumstance.
Check out http://www.dictionary.com for more information.
I have to agree with X…Arc-Dark is one of the worst organization names that I’ve ever heard of.
The sacrifices we make to keep in theme.
Good attention to detail. Faulkner is holding his cigar in the accepted method among aficionados and the hoidy-toidy: Index finger curled over the top with the weight of the cigar balanced on the inside of the middle finger. Maxima tries, but she doesn’t seem quite so comfortable in managing hers; it keeps slipping to sit between her index finger and thumb. Is that a deliberate indication of their differences?
It’ll soon be canon if Dave reads the comments… A little retcon never hurt anyone if it’s tiny details — not suddenly saying Superman has always been immune to kryptonite and it’s all a phobia that squirell girl is going to cure by upgrading superman’s cyborg-half brain (which makes no sense relating to pre-cyborg days).
Not knowing much about cigars myself, I didn’t do it on purpose, but sure, why not? Pretty much all I know about smoking is that you hold a joint and a cigarette differently for some reason.
For future reference, and because I’m bored, you hold a joint differently because there’s no filter and you wanna smoke it down as far as possible. Less chance of burning yourself if holding it between index finger and thumb, unless you’ve got a roach clip, which seem to no longer be cool. Also, the way a cigarette is held differs geographically. Western European and Asian cultures tend to pinch a cig between two fingers, pinky finger out like they were holding a cup of tea. You see that sort of thing in the Gestapo interrogation scene of old WWII movies. Cultures from freaking cold places like Siberia invert the cig so the butt sticks out between the index and middle finger. That way the cherry warms your palm and you can protect it from the wind.
And I wish I could edit my comments. I meant EASTERN European cultures.
Yeah, Dabbler is making a (very small) walk-on cameo on Times Like This. If you want to read the rest of this pretty funny time-travel comic, be aware some pages are NSFW (sexual innuendo, sexual activity, topless women).
While purple and dressed similarly, she is missing a pair of arms, and her head is all wrong.
It is an official cameo, just limited by the character creation of a (in-universe) fictional online setting.
I just thought I’d point out that the mosque scene could be fit in anywhere as filler. If you focus on the main storyline, the mosque scene could be worked on without a definitive schedule in spare time, and then kept in storage for those rainy days when you are running late on updates or just straight up want a break.
I think leaving the damaged/destroyed mosque as a noodle incident, or just a one-panel flashback that shows the action leading to Max damaging the building, but not the destruction itself. Thoughts that come to mind are:
1) Overhead view, looking almost straight down. Max is mid-frame holding her smoking gut, curled up in the fetal position, high up in mid-air. Speed lines make it clear she is falling. Thought bubble says “Damn anti-aircraft missile!” Her apparent landing, okay crashing, zone is a particular type of building. This could also resolve her injury and meeting Peggy.
2) Wide frame. On the left, an Iraqi main battle tank, like a Lion of Baghdad, big puff of smoke coming from its cannon. Max is being thrown back with her belly bending in a severe 90 degree arc. A large shell is shown, thanks to speed lines, shoving into her belly, but not actually into her (it is not that powerful). Behind her is a building with special markings (any guesses as to what?). Again, this could explain her injury and meeting Peggy.
This would be a pick one of the above, not all of them.
That said, I would still be very happy with the mosque remaining an noodle incident.
What injury? Where did I miss this?
Max and Peggy met in hospital while were both recovering from injuries sustained in the field during their separate deployments to Iraq.
Thanks
Argh! … while both were recovering …
Actually if you look at the last two panels, Maxima is holding her cigar in the “accepted” style, I imagine that the first panel showing her holding the cigar between thumb and finger is to show that she had just lit the cigar and had taken it out of her mouth in order to speak. Incidently the second panel showing her with the cigar is personally my favorite shot of her so far, it really shows off her build and poise to excellent advantage. That and there is nothing sexier than a well built woman that likes cigars. :)
You could always put of sketches of the flashback as voting incentives.
I don’t know if it has been said before but, thank you very much for the “Who’s who” part.
It helps tremendously. I don’t know why most comic authors expect us to remember a character whose name was mentioned once, 5 IRL years ago, in one of a thousand comics we read.
And by giving it to us again we can actually form memories properly of who’s who and get more emotionally involved and invested in this particular comic.
You’re welcome! I put that on my comic because I frequently wished other comics had a similar feature. I was surprised there wasn’t a wordpress plugin already that could do something like it, so I had to get some custom code from one of the guys that worked on comicpress. I’m working on an article about how it’s implemented so maybe you’ll see it on other comics before too long.
I realize this is very late, and the next comic will be out in just a couple hours, but I’m hoping it isn’t either of the options in the artist’s note. It looks like the meeting already has a solid consensus, so no need to stay with them. And I think the mosque joke works better if we leave the details to the readers’ imagination.
I’m not the only one to say this, but I’ll cast my lot in as well.
“Arc-Dark” sounds…. reeaaally…. dummmbb…. >~o
Just going to say that I’m enjoying it, and that you made a good choice looking at 40k.
Arc Light and Arc Dark, how can that sound dumb? Not to me.
Oh ho, now a reference to one of the better episodes of The Simpsons, where homer gets hyperobese so that he can work at home. That was a good one.
Instead of ‘Arc-Dark’ why not “Shadowed-Arc”
Said out loud it sounds like ‘Shadow Dark’ – which just sounds like a cooler name to me.
You can use that one for free, but the next one will cost you. ^_^
i find it funny they say there is still 2 orbs they don`t know 2 of the orbs power when we have been shown 6 powers out of 7.
-tentacle
-flying
-pew pew
-projection
-force field
-and true sight
a little mistake here dave?
True sight and projection are powers imparted by the same orb.
scratch that i jsut read that those orbs have auxillary powers altough i think true sight is kind of a strech to any of the powers how so far.
It will all make sense! Eventually. To me at least.
I heartily approve the destruction of mosques.
Also churches and possibly synagogues.
“Like a wall that’s had a fish sandwich rubbed on it.”
…
ಠ_ಠ What?!
It’s a Simpson’s reference. I can’t find a clip on youtube but it was a joke about how greasy they are.
I was trying to remember where I knew that from. Like I got the joke but couldn’t remember why.
Thanks for the remind! =3

At about 2:30
It couldn’t be named anything other than Arc Dark it rolls of the tongue too easy.
Ark Dark
Dark Heart
I get that Arc-Dark is supposed to sound dumb, that’s why X is sighing. Still I have a suggestion; how about Arc-shade?
Anyway, I also would like to know more about X… Damn your mysterious cliffhangers!
Ark-Shade sounds like a side bar of ARK-DARK.
Your link to the art piece mentioned in the commentary (Mistress Missy?) leads to a page that’s mainly like a “this domain for sale” type with “hacked by [person]” all over it. :C Is it posted in another area? DA, mayhaps?
Gah, the Hatefarm site no longer exists. I’ll see if I can find that piece and put in on DA.

OMG. Very funny. But clearly we’re dealing with a mind that is not merely twisted, but actually sprained.
Is the cheerleader a reference to something or just a random stock character?
Speaking of references, I didn’t catch the Simpson’s one on the GP comic on my first readthrough. Nice.
Is the K9 unit called Arc-Bark?
Yes, Yes, so much Yes.
And Yorp (another commenter) shall be in charge of the sentient K-9 unit.
Why not just go with the obvious name D-Arc?
Geez. You blow up just one mosque, and no one ever lets you forget about it.
love that simpsons reference. and that maxima blew up what is essentially a church
