Grrl Power #104 – Flail-Fu Fail
So. Many. Arms. And. Stripes.
I’ve known how Sydney’s first encounter with Dabbler was going to go down for some time now, but up until quite recently, she actually succeeded in clobbering her. I try not to second guess myself but really the majority of this comic is just me transcribing my daydreams. At some point I thought I should probably try doing some actual writing, and I figured it might start getting a little predictable if Sydney comedically noggin smashes everyone she meets. Besides, she still gets one in at the end.
The original page ended with Dabbler on the floor covered in chair splinters, Arianna looks at Maxima and says “I noticed you didn’t use your super speed to prevent any of that.” Maxima replies with a satisfied grin, “I did not.”
As for the guy in the trenchcoat, we need to get through the immediate fallout of Dabbler’s reveal first. Oh, and in case you only check in on the comic on Mondays (and who can blame you) I put up a bonus tangent comic on Thursday last week.
OWNED!
Literary genius can often be described as saying as much as possible in as few words as possible. In that respect, I say “Well played, good Sir!”
PS: I think the short version of that would be “LOL dude, sums it up perfect!”
you lost the added meaning behind the class of the responce
Duely noted. Still, I like my way better :D
Score 1 for Halo!
Them music for Flail Fu? https://tabulous.co.uk/sublime/hong-kong-phooey-bass-tab/
Bwahaha! Oh, it’s a little scary how well Syd is going to mesh with some of the others on the team…
I am glad you did this. I thought that Sydney’s chief vulnerability was a lack of close range offense. Her explosive beams are too powerful to be used at close range where most fights happen and she would definately be inclined to get to close range. The ability to control her orbs gives her awesome close range offense as well as defense and a room clearing ability. It is also an ability for which she does not need her hands. Of course all of that depends on how fast she can accelerate the orbs and her level of fine control over them. I doubt she has to worry about anything damaging the orbs if she uses them that way. They are probably the toughest thing on the team.
But she wasn’t absolutely sure this was a deadly opponent or sure about the powers or defense of the rest of the people in the room. Also using the orbs in combat has not been trained into her yet. Just because she has powers doesn’t mean she has the ability to use them as a reflex.
Just figured I would let you know that, in my personal opinion… You are doing an amazing job with this comic and you deserve the #1 spot on TWC… Again, in my own opinion
Thanks! I’m pleased I organically made it to the top 100. I wish I could do more vote incentives/bonus art for you guys, but you know, life.
Wow, she has a lot of tongue piercings.
I like how Sydney’s wild flailing are just a minor nuisance to Xuriel’s well practiced motions of spinning her around and sitting her down right and proper. And I swear that Xuriel has bi-colored eyes. The left is dark blue, the right is lighter sea blue. I just love Dabbler’s design and in full glorious color!
Her eyes are hetero-chromatic. One green one blue.
As Doctor X said “A very groovy mutation!” :)
Don’t try this move at home kids (unless you ALSO have 4 functional and coordinated muscular arms, then go ahead and give it a shot! :P)
Guess I have to ask…What if Sydney didn’t control that orb? She has treated the orbs as if they were sentient.
Just sayin…
Touche good sir ;P
Yaknow… I’m just wondering how the bone and muscle structures work to make four functional and strong arms…
floating shoulder ball joint supported by a “cross-bar” with a hinged plate center over the spin. Results in loss of flexibility in the spine, but adds to over-all physical support. the real problem comes not from skeletal and muscle structures but the possible pressure issues on the lungs and diaphram, as you have the “modified” positioning of the floating shoulders forcing an arch in the rib-cage structure, while this may actually overall enforce the strength of the ribcage it also lessens its flexibility. Meaning to take a deep breath she either has to put her lower arms out, or like how she is standing never lay them flat on herside and always have them out a little like hands on hips.
Unless of course she has a modified lung structure with a more efficient system of seperating oxygen/and/or/nitrogen from the atmosphere (I doubt any mobile life form would breathe CO2, and as she has no suit she is definetly not a Methane breather).
You’ve also made an excellent case for Dabbler having an excellent posture. Which helps to explain and justify the “breast… buoyancy” the author referred to in #103.
My vote is for – from the chair – shield and tentacle grab, followed by a Hulk/Loki like explanation of why not to toy with Sydney. Dabbler can’t teleport, right?
a jill of all trades at magic who can’t teleport at least across the room would be a big surprise.
Let’s not forget she’s a genius who already has some kind of teleporting technology built into her cybernetic arm (allows her access to equipment in her lab), so maybe it or another such gadget allows her short range teleportation. I’m with you on this one.
Hmm. I know it’s a bit late, but I had an idea why Sydney didn’t clobber Dabbler like she did Harem. The People’s Elbow works because of surprise. Harem was on the floor before she realized she was being attacked. The same would presumably work on Dabbler as well, but since Sydney went for the chair instead, Dabbler had enough time to realize what was going on and defend herself.
And really, surprise is the only thing Sydney has going for her without the orbs.
Hmm, I just realized… That IS how Sydney flies!!!
The other item of interest here, connected into the fact that Dabbler could detect nothing from the orbs, is that while she was easily able to avoid Sydney’s chair flail she did not sense the orb coming with either her natural senses or her magic and thus took full impact from the bonk. This could have usefulness later against other beings with enhanced senses, with the caveat that Sydney must be in close range to do it.
interesting..against certain foes sydney’s orbs could be their ace in the hole so to speak
How many studs does she have on her tongue?
I think it’s like 5? Anyway as soon as she opened her mouth and the comic zoomed out and showed her goat legs she went from a 10/10 in my book to a 6/10. There is no greater turn off for me than a girl with tongue piercings. Also the legs of a goat make her a 4
unless your a lesbian, then tongue piercings are HOT!
I think Irish turkey means that piercings are a major turn-off in his book
I’m not convinced that those are piercings. Given Dabbler, they may actually be natural parts of her biology.
What ISN’T a move in the succumbs karma sutra?
For me it isn’t her species it is those tongue ornaments that turn me off. Maybe it is because I always feel uncomfortable with metal near my skin.
Dabbler: “I left Sidra for this?”
I’m going to have to use the first three rows as a reaction image sometime.
Dabbler’s absolutely adorable in frames 2-5 :)
I guess four armed is fore warned?
btw, I never asked it before… but what texture the orbs have for Sydney? For me they look like they are made out of glass
I guess they probably feel like glass, but warm.
interesting, very interesting
