Grrl Power #3 – Delicious Yogurt Pretzels
I bet you were so fooled – no one could have guessed what was going on! No one except everyone probably.
I realize as I post this that I’ve introduced my main character without having her name anywhere on the page. (It’s Sydney) I’m sure there’s a rule somewhere that says specifically not to do that, but the idea is that people will click on the cast page and read up, which isn’t a reasonable assumption as I almost never do that on other webcomics. Well, we’ll see enough of her that eventually people should be able to figure out her name. I was thinking of adding a sidebar with relevant character mini-bios on the side, but I wouldn’t know how to do it so that the sidebar reflected who was in the comic that the viewer was currently looking at.

Are they playing the TSR Marvel Supers RPG?
Marvel is D100, they’re playing… get this, DC Heroes 3rd edition. It’s something me and my friends were playing, and it’s a lot better than the 4th edition, but unfortunately it’s been our of print for years. I can’t even find the books on Amazon or anything. The dice system is 2D10, and you consult a table with attack value vs. defense value, probably not the most straightforward system but it works. If you roll doubles you roll again and add them together. Of course you fail on double 1’s.
DC Heroes 3rd was one of the best RPG systems published! Even 2nd was pretty good, too. I dearly wish we could get anything as easy and fun as that today. It’s promising that the new DC game using the d20 and has a feel like M&M, but it’s not the same as the Mayfair stuff. Seriously, as soon as I saw you counting column shifts, I knew EXACTLY what you were playing. Good times. =)
I’ll have to check that out some time. I was thinking GURPS superheroes, until I saw that D10. GURPS might be a bit complicated, but I have to say that it’s nice not to need special dice. Pity it’s not a beginner-friendly enough system really take advantage of that fact.
Do you happen to have character sheets for the Mains?
I was thinking about trying to get them included in Writeups.org.
I don’t. Haven’t played a tabletop game in quite a while unfortunately.
If you’re still looking for Dc Heroes 3rd ed., it’s available as a free PDF (found it on PDFcoffee).
Two girls in one role-playing group? I call shenanigans. :)
Hah hah actually my weekly game night has 2 girls in it. And up to 7 guys, so the ratio is still bad but there are two of ’em.
um btw halo’s orbs they’re not around her head in this- which which means!- I assume this will be covered in the future comics but but what happened to them! Does she still have her powers?? She says she’s going off to superhero at the end but then but then- kyaaaaa! how did I not notice this till now! :D
She has them in her tube, probably stashed them under the table.
Oh… well ok then. Lol
I’ve actually got two in a group of seven total. We would have invited one of the guys’ sister as well, but more of the people we’d invited ended up joining and crowding would have been really bad.
Interestingly, our actual party ended up being way more of a boys club because in both of our campaigns all of the boys played male characters, and in one one of the girls played an agender character and in the other campaign the other girl played a male character.
My gaming group has four including me, and sometimes five when my friend’s daughter comes with her. ;P
And no, it’s not a ‘just girls’ group, we all bring our husbands. ;)
Belive it or not, I once hosted 3 Girls and 1 guy (Not Including me) for a 3.5 D&D session. It was… Interesting, But Wierd, because None of them were quite nerdy/geeky enough to really get into it. Still, The session we had was alrigjt. Except when they killed the Main Villain Completely by accident and forced an early end to the Session…
P
And yeah, This is a bitbof an out of date thread, I know.
I regularly host a gaming group that’s 6 girls and 3 guys (I’m one of the guys, one of the girls is my wife, and one of the other guys is another player’s husband, the one non-married guy is a new addition whose sister comes over.)
There is a severe deficiency of female pen&paper roleplayers… that is true.
The first one is almost always “GM’s Girlfriend” or equivalent. After that, any others seem to be affiliated with other members of the local geek hierarchy in descending order (i.e. “GM’s Best Buddy’s Girlfriend”, etc). If they’re not, they generally end up that way anyway.
What this all basically equates to from my perspective is… don’t look to them for back-up if the rest of the group decides you’d be a good butt-monkey for cruel humour.
I’ve yet to find a roleplaying group that isn’t primarily populated by dicks… by either definition.
Very late reply from the future, but my gaming group has 3 players, and of them, I’m the only guy. If you count our DM, we’re 50/50 split for boy-to-girl ratio.
It saddens me that as soon as I saw 7 Column Shifts my mind immediately went to “Awesome, they’re playing DC Heroes or MEGS.” I need to get out more.
No, stay, you’re among friends here! My first though when I hear “column shifts” is the Marvel RPG.
The Column Shifts, plus the roll of double 8s and subsequest reroll tells me DC heroes and MEGS.
But then, I hated the Marvel system back then, so I would never default brain to it.
In the beginning, there were pretzels. These pretzels made the universe and everything in it. They control everything, and are omniscent as well as omnipotent.
OH THANK GOD. Seriously, there are times when I feel like my friends and I are the only ones who have even heard of the old marvel system! I can tell that”s not what they”re playing here, but these posters have made my day.
Yeah, I knew what was going on as soon as Sydney started arguing about what should have happened with the photon blast. I’ve read enough of “Goblins” for that. ;)
Actually one of the rpg groups i was in had 3 girls and 2 guys (3 guys if you count the gm). roleplaying girls are not as uncommon as people think
I’m just rereading the old pages now, and I noticed Sydney’s girlfriend’s boobs are a little too stiff. I thought maybe they should deform a bit to the side where they touch her arm. Haha, sorry, I’ve been on boobsdon’tworkthat on tumblr way too much.
I’ll have to check out that tumblr blog. I admit I’m not great at drawing boobs. I wish I had a cadre of women willing to be boob models for me, so I could just tweet “I need a c-cup, 3/4 rear view in a sports bra, arm up like you’re brushing your hair back.” and get a twitpic back in 30 minutes. That’s the only way I’ll be able to do them perfectly unfortunately.
You’re “not great at drawing boobs” and yet you decided to draw a comic about superheroines? Brave, very brave =)
They’re surprisingly complex.
You should be able to google stock photos. Just look up female sport stock shots, and you should get what you want.
Google image search leaves a lot to be desired. I have… a collection of relevant pictures, but they’re usually not… packaged correctly – or from the right angle or whatever.
Hmm, maybe art books on the human form? Or magazines?
Or OOOHHH! Anatomy studies!
If you need help drawing female figures and boobs Pinterest has got some great stuff I’m alway using it when I need tips on anatomy, here:

I know this is an old post, but I feel like no boob-art discussion is complete without a link to this boob tutorial by ragingtofu on deviantART. Also here’s a link to a comment on a future comic page about boobs.
I’ve been reading and loving this comic for months, but it just occurred to me — an actual laser would not knock the cap off his head. Lasers don’t apply force, they apply light and heat — though that means that if the laser were powerful enough the cap might melt or catch fire. Any force that might be applied by a “fantasy” laser _would_ be blocked by the force field.
Of course that wouldn’t matter to the gamers unless the GM describes it — they just mark off points of damage. Just a nitpick with panel 3. ;)
And I bet countless people have already pointed this out. Sorry.
You bring up a good point, but it’s quite likely that Kopy Kraut is instinctively ducking away from his flaming cap, so there is still some type of momentum involved…
Not true. High intensity energy weapons are impact, not heat damage. Basically they vaporize just a little bit of the object in question which spurts away from the object as a jet.
Light can exert kinetic force, in the form of radiation pressure. That’s why solar sails work. Or it could cause an exergonic physical, chemical, or nuclear reaction in the area of impact, which would disperse the affected material on the surface, and Newton’s Third Law would make the object as a whole move in the direction in which I shot the beam. All of these only come into play when the beam is high-enough intensity, though. (The one that requires the least energy out of these is, well technically the radiation pressure which requires an arbitrarily small amount of force, but requires probably the most out of any of these to produce a reaction like that, so I mean the one that requires the least amount of energy to produce that kind of reaction is a physical reaction, in the form of vaporization. Chemical reactions probably shouldn’t work at all for moving, given that the crown is made of gold. Nuclear reactions are feasible, though, when the laser beam gets to really high energies, far into the gamma spectrum.)
wow did not know that
Sydney: “Genannt Schuß nach der Krone.” Kopy Kraut: ” Kappy… Es ist eine Kopierkappy.” Sydney:(Das Mädchen mit Pferdeschwanz und Brille.) “Was auch immer. Es geht abwärts. (nächstes Panel) Doppel Acht!” Kopy Kraut: ” Sohn einer… Roll.” Sydney: “Plus einer 5 und einer 6, also.. 27 Insgesamt.” KopyKraut: “Yerp.” / nächses Panel) Olivia: “Yeah! Los Omnigal!” Sydney: “Woo!
Is the woman who is hi-fiving Sydney, Olivia?
Yup. Didn’t plan that at all originally. :)
This is extreamly unrealistic. How the heck did an RPG board game get not one, but 2 PRETTY girls to play it?
Ok that makes more sense now….copycap ha!
I love yogurt covered pretzel’s.
I discovered this last night and caught up this morning. Re-reading, I’m glad that Olivia and Sydney became friends.
What kind of watch is Sydney wearing? It’s as long as the width of her face! (More a bracer than a watch)
Oh, never mind. I forgot almost the whole comic so far is a flashback.
Huh- is that Brad? So he’s gotten to be good enough friends to be gaming with them?
So, I’ve come back to see if I can ID everyone here.
Luckily some people did some of that already.
So, Sydney and Olivia . Joel is probably the guy in the baseball hat, Guy behind them could be Brad, but he would need to have lost the goatee.
That leaves one, and my first thought was Tony, but he’s clearly not hot enough. So… random mystery person who we haven’t met yet.
Also, it’s stunning to see the change in artwork. It was good before, but it’s clearly improved a lot
And finally, the obsessive in me realized as I went through the archive that we are still technically in Chapter 2 of the comic. We never got a cover for Chapter 3
Look at the first panel of the next page. That looks like Joel. The guy here in the baseball cap is wearing a different shirt.
I wonder if we’ll ever see Sydney game with this crew again… and what new levels of rules lawyering she’ll be capable of with her on the job experience!
I mean, as soon as she gets back from the blood dimension, obviously.
Wait, is this a flashback? I can’t actually remember…
Technically, this is a flash-FORWARD. The flash-BACK begins in a few…
Ok, so reading from the beginning again for the umpteenth time. Is the woman high fiving Sydney the one they hire to work in the comic shop? Holy time continuum, prequels can loose easter eggs when you don’t know there eggs yet.
Olivia was the name I was trying to remember
What’s better is when you realise there’s Checkoves that conceal more Stealthy Checkoves….see if you can spot yhem in upcoming pages…
There’s no such rule, and it’s often more natural to not mention the name until… In the worst case, people would have to indicate the character by characteristics, which is better because they’d have to be more aware of what they’re discussing.
